Latest / Foul Territory / Fair Territory: Kyle Tucker's impact on Mets/Dodgers/Blue Jays, Red Sox sign Ranger Suárez
Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Thursday edition of Fair Territory. I'm
- 0:05Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal here with Alana Rizzo and Alana it could
- 0:09Speaker 1: be Kyle Tucker Day. But right off the top, we
- 0:12Speaker 1: have some big news on the WBC. Mister Clayton Kershaw
- 0:17Speaker 1: has announced that he will be pitching for Team USA
- 0:20Speaker 1: as well. In addition to schoobl and Schiens and all
- 0:23Speaker 1: the other guys that we've seen sign up.
- 0:27Speaker 2: It's going to be an unbelievable starting rotation. Ken Rosenthal
- 0:30Speaker 2: for Mark de Rosa and Team USA. And I love
- 0:33Speaker 2: this for Clayton Kershaw. Obviously, he announced his retirement. We
- 0:36Speaker 2: know that he's not going to be in Major League
- 0:38Speaker 2: Baseball next year. But this is an opportunity, I believe,
- 0:41Speaker 2: for the future Hall of Famer to be able to
- 0:43Speaker 2: don the USA jersey and start doing things that he
- 0:46Speaker 2: wasn't necessarily able to do allowed to do when he
- 0:50Speaker 2: was playing for the Dodgers. You know, he doesn't have
- 0:52Speaker 2: to worry about when he's going to be making his
- 0:53Speaker 2: first start, he doesn't have to be worried about is
- 0:56Speaker 2: he healthy or not. So for Clayton Kershaw to be
- 0:58Speaker 2: able to be a participant for Team USA and the WBC.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I think it's awesome, one final hurrah for one of
- 1:05Speaker 2: the greatest to ever play for the Dodgers, Ken.
- 1:08Speaker 1: And remember in twenty twenty three he wanted to play,
- 1:11Speaker 1: but there was some kind of insurance issue Alona, so
- 1:13Speaker 1: he didn't get the chance. Then won't be a problem
- 1:16Speaker 1: now and Clayton Kershaw a member of Team USA. But
- 1:20Speaker 1: we have a lot more to get to and this
- 1:22Speaker 1: could be, as I mentioned at the top, the day
- 1:24Speaker 1: in which Kyle Tucker makes his decision. I actually thought
- 1:27Speaker 1: it was going to be yesterday. It might not be today,
- 1:30Speaker 1: but we have this thing looming in our sport. Ken.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Is it a situation where it just may come down
- 1:37Speaker 2: to where Kyle Tucker wants to go? Everyone seems to
- 1:40Speaker 2: think the decision may be made today, But I don't
- 1:43Speaker 2: know that there's a team in the forefront. Maybe it's
- 1:45Speaker 2: just where Tucker feels the most comfortable. Am I right
- 1:48Speaker 2: in saying that?
- 1:50Speaker 1: I believe that you're right to a degree. The question
- 1:53Speaker 1: here is what does Tucker want? Now? We've heard reports
- 1:57Speaker 1: of the Blue Jays offering a ten year long deal.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Does he want a long deal? We've heard various times
- 2:04Speaker 1: that Kyle Tucker is not a guy who necessarily wants
- 2:06Speaker 1: to play forever. So then if it's a shorter term
- 2:10Speaker 1: deal with opt outs, if that's the other option on
- 2:13Speaker 1: the table, would he want to play for the Mets
- 2:16Speaker 1: because he's a low key guy, might not want New York?
- 2:19Speaker 1: And does that point to the Dodgers as the team
- 2:21Speaker 1: because they can offer the same kind of short term
- 2:23Speaker 1: deal with opt outs. None of this is known right now.
- 2:27Speaker 1: His decision will speak volumes. Maybe he does want the
- 2:30Speaker 1: long term deal, and maybe all of this talk about
- 2:32Speaker 1: him not wanting to be playing forever is bunk. And
- 2:36Speaker 1: maybe he does want to play in New York and
- 2:38Speaker 1: is willing to do it and get the opt out
- 2:41Speaker 1: and take it from there. There are all kinds of
- 2:43Speaker 1: things in play here. But what's really interesting is these
- 2:47Speaker 1: are three big time teams right now. The Toronto Blue Jays,
- 2:50Speaker 1: Los Angeles Dodgers both in the World Series last year,
- 2:53Speaker 1: and the New York Mets, of course, spend a ton
- 2:55Speaker 1: of money, and the implications for each of these teams
- 2:59Speaker 1: along will be the immense depending upon what he decides.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Ken with the three teams, they're all heavy hitters, big players.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Would any of the three surprise you.
- 3:09Speaker 1: No, I would not say it would be surprised by
- 3:12Speaker 1: any of the three. Now what's interesting is Toronto is
- 3:15Speaker 1: a player here in part because two of their outfielders,
- 3:19Speaker 1: Dalton var Show and George Springer might be more of
- 3:21Speaker 1: a DH now are up for free agency at the
- 3:25Speaker 1: end of this season. They need a long term solution
- 3:27Speaker 1: in their outfield. Tucker would fit perfectly in that regard.
- 3:31Speaker 1: He see he's from Tampa. The Blue Jays train in Dunedin.
- 3:35Speaker 1: We know he's visited their complex. We heard about that
- 3:37Speaker 1: early in the offseason. In that sense for them, he
- 3:41Speaker 1: is a really good fit for the Mets. I wrote
- 3:43Speaker 1: this yesterday. It's a little more curious. You're gonna have
- 3:47Speaker 1: two fifty million dollar corner outfielders. That's a little odd, certainly,
- 3:51Speaker 1: something that's never happened before. And neither one of them
- 3:54Speaker 1: is a plus defender. Tucker was at one time, but
- 3:57Speaker 1: hasn't been lately. And this is a team that has
- 4:00Speaker 1: talked endlessly about improving its defense. And then there were
- 4:04Speaker 1: the Dodgers, looking right now at basically a left field opening.
- 4:08Speaker 1: They've got Alex call there as a possibility. They've got
- 4:12Speaker 1: the kid that bringing in from Triple A the Triple
- 4:15Speaker 1: A PCL MVP last year. He's another possibility they could
- 4:18Speaker 1: platoon those two. And they have a definite need for
- 4:22Speaker 1: an outfielder in the wake of the Michael Confordo signing,
- 4:25Speaker 1: which did not work out well for them obviously. So
- 4:29Speaker 1: right now they're sitting down pies and center or perhaps
- 4:33Speaker 1: a corner if Tommy Edmond cannot recover from ankle surgery
- 4:36Speaker 1: in time to play center, and then Tayo Hernandez probably
- 4:40Speaker 1: in right, or he could move to left if they
- 4:42Speaker 1: signed Tucker. So the Dodgers actually have a need for
- 4:46Speaker 1: Tucker too. How far they want to go contractually that
- 4:49Speaker 1: remains to be seen.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Insane to think a guy that hit two sixty six
- 4:53Speaker 2: could be getting a fifty million AAV. Listen, it's a
- 4:55Speaker 2: good gig if you can get it. Ken. Let's switch
- 4:58Speaker 2: our focus now to the Boston Red Sox. It seems
- 5:00Speaker 2: like they're thinking more about run prevention can versus run
- 5:04Speaker 2: production signing Ranger Suarez. But you told me earlier today
- 5:08Speaker 2: in our production meeting that you don't think the Red
- 5:10Speaker 2: Sox are done. They didn't land a heavy hitter in
- 5:12Speaker 2: Alonso or Schwarb or Obviously Alex Bregman is now with
- 5:15Speaker 2: the Cubs. What do you make of the Suarez signing.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Well, they can't be done. First of all. Now, I
- 5:21Speaker 1: have no problem with what they did here in pivoting
- 5:24Speaker 1: from Bregman to Suarez short term, because what they have
- 5:28Speaker 1: now is a surplus of starting pitching. I know that's
- 5:32Speaker 1: hard to say, and teams talk about that and then
- 5:34Speaker 1: it suddenly disappears. That can happen, of course, and they
- 5:37Speaker 1: also have what we've been talking about for I don't
- 5:40Speaker 1: know months now, a surplus in their outfield. They have
- 5:44Speaker 1: the ability to go trade for an infielder now, Katel Marte,
- 5:48Speaker 1: that's someone that they talked about prior to the Diamondbacks
- 5:51Speaker 1: taking him off the market. Seems to me it would
- 5:54Speaker 1: be kind of odd for the Diamondbacks to change their
- 5:56Speaker 1: minds now and suddenly tell Katel, you know what, we
- 6:00Speaker 1: aren't going to trade you, but now we are going
- 6:01Speaker 1: to trade you. But there are other options available. Ezach
- 6:05Speaker 1: Parides from the Houston Astros, Nico Horner from the Cubs.
- 6:09Speaker 1: To me, that's a long shot. I don't think the
- 6:11Speaker 1: Cubs want to do that, but that is a possibility.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Brendan Donovan less so because he hits left handed. They
- 6:17Speaker 1: already have too many left handed hitters. So from the
- 6:20Speaker 1: Red Sox perspective, Suarez is a bit of a departure
- 6:24Speaker 1: for them. He's not this big, tall, hard thrower that's
- 6:26Speaker 1: what they traditionally signed, but his pitch ability is off
- 6:30Speaker 1: the charts. He is a guy that has proven himself
- 6:34Speaker 1: in huge moments in the postseason. I like the signing
- 6:38Speaker 1: for them. I don't know that twenty six million dollars
- 6:40Speaker 1: a year for them is too much or too much
- 6:43Speaker 1: for Ranger Suarez. That is about where I would have
- 6:46Speaker 1: slotted him. So while this deal is unusual for them
- 6:49Speaker 1: and he cost them draft picks where Bregman wouldn't have.
- 6:52Speaker 1: And also, as Buster only a ESPN tweeted yesterday with
- 6:56Speaker 1: the deferrals, the offer that they made to Bregman was
- 7:00Speaker 1: actually for less in present day value than the offer
- 7:03Speaker 1: they made to Suarez. That's inexplicable, hard to even believe.
- 7:07Speaker 1: You see the tweet from Buster right there, but that
- 7:10Speaker 1: is what they did. They blew it. They came back
- 7:13Speaker 1: with Suarez and no deferrals. Smart move Red Sox, and
- 7:17Speaker 1: now it seems that they have the ability to go
- 7:20Speaker 1: out and get another hitter in addition to Wilson Contreras.
- 7:24Speaker 1: They do that, maybe it's Paradis, maybe it's someone else
- 7:27Speaker 1: they do that. They suddenly look like a formidable group.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Okay, so you mentioned that they decided to go, you know,
- 7:34Speaker 2: obviously after him, no deferrals. They're also going after a
- 7:36Speaker 2: guy ken Ensuarez. It's a little bit older kind of
- 7:39Speaker 2: breaking protocol for what the Red Sox typically do. Does
- 7:42Speaker 2: that give you a sense of desperation because they missed
- 7:46Speaker 2: out on Bregman or is it more of listen, we
- 7:48Speaker 2: now have a very formidable starting rotation with Garrett Crochet,
- 7:51Speaker 2: Sonny Gray, now Ranger Suarez, obviously Brian Beao some talented
- 7:56Speaker 2: young guys at the back end of the rotation potentially.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Or is it just like we're going to focus on pitching,
- 8:01Speaker 2: we'll still have time for another bat.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Well. They obviously reacted to what had happened with Bregman.
- 8:09Speaker 1: They were embarrassed by it and should have been now.
- 8:12Speaker 1: They probably were talking to Suarez the entire time and
- 8:15Speaker 1: had him as an option based on how things might go.
- 8:19Speaker 1: But it clearly was a response. In my opinion, they
- 8:22Speaker 1: might say, well, hey, we're cool. You know, we were
- 8:25Speaker 1: not necessarily guaranteed to get Bregman, so we had to
- 8:28Speaker 1: have other things in place, which is true. But the
- 8:30Speaker 1: speed with which they acted certainly indicates that for sure
- 8:35Speaker 1: they had a plan in mind or an ida in
- 8:38Speaker 1: mind that accelerated when they got embarrassed by the Bregman departure.
- 8:43Speaker 1: So here they are, Here they are, and Suarez is
- 8:46Speaker 1: a different kind of picture for them, but I still
- 8:49Speaker 1: like him an awful lot. I believe this is going
- 8:51Speaker 1: to be a good signing for them. And now when
- 8:53Speaker 1: you look at them, I didn't love the idea of
- 8:56Speaker 1: Sonny Gray as a number two, but now okay, to
- 9:00Speaker 1: go Crochet left, Sonny Gray Wright, Suarez left, and then
- 9:04Speaker 1: Oviedo and whoever else you want to mix in there.
- 9:06Speaker 1: They've got a ton of options. That's a good position
- 9:09Speaker 1: to be in.
- 9:10Speaker 2: I'm dis just in right now on fair territory with
- 9:12Speaker 2: Ken Rosenthal Alex Bregman. Ken says he's going to participate
- 9:16Speaker 2: in the WBC. So not only is it going to
- 9:18Speaker 2: be future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershak to be future
- 9:20Speaker 2: Hall of Famer Alex Bregman in the WBC. What do
- 9:23Speaker 2: you make of it. And do you think that had
- 9:24Speaker 2: to be a conversation with the Cubs.
- 9:26Speaker 1: I would imagine it did, and I would imagine he
- 9:29Speaker 1: expressed to all the teams that were talking to him, Hey,
- 9:32Speaker 1: I want to play in the WBC, and that's something
- 9:35Speaker 1: that I'm going to do. I would think he had
- 9:38Speaker 1: the leverage to do that, and it's a great addition
- 9:41Speaker 1: again for Team USA. This is the most loaded Team
- 9:45Speaker 1: USA in the history of the World Baseball Classic and
- 9:49Speaker 1: there's going to be I don't know, i red call
- 9:51Speaker 1: it pressure, but there will be an expectation that this
- 9:54Speaker 1: team performs really well. Now the last team did. They
- 9:57Speaker 1: went down to the final pitch against Team Japan, lost
- 10:00Speaker 1: when Shoho Tani struck out Mike Trout. But this team
- 10:04Speaker 1: has Aaron Judge, cal Raley, Alex Bregman, Trek Scooble, Paul Skeins,
- 10:10Speaker 1: go right down the line. It's an incredible collection of
- 10:14Speaker 1: talent and they're going to be fun to watch. And
- 10:17Speaker 1: a side note on Bregman here, the initial round for
- 10:21Speaker 1: Team USA will be in Houston, so he will get
- 10:23Speaker 1: to play in Houston, and I'm sure he's still quite
- 10:27Speaker 1: well remembered there because of his role in two World
- 10:30Speaker 1: Series Championships.
- 10:31Speaker 2: They played World Baseball Classic. Always a good time. It's
- 10:35Speaker 2: going to be upon us before we know it. Much
- 10:37Speaker 2: more to come here on Fair Territory with Ken Rosenthal.

- 12:13Speaker 2: All right, well, welcoming back to fair territory with Ken Rosenthal.
- 12:16Speaker 2: It is time to ask Ken some questions. We start
- 12:19Speaker 2: in Toronto. Michael would like to know could the Blue
- 12:23Speaker 2: Jays pivot to Bellinger, meaning Cody Bellinger if they don't
- 12:26Speaker 2: get Tucker, or would they go back to Bo first.
- 12:29Speaker 2: I think Bo's gone. What do you think, Ken?
- 12:31Speaker 1: I've thought that all along, and the greater need for
- 12:35Speaker 1: them certainly is in the outfield. But this question raises
- 12:39Speaker 1: a really good point. The team that doesn't get Tucker,
- 12:43Speaker 1: maybe they do get involved with Bellinger, whether it's the
- 12:46Speaker 1: Dodgers or whether it's the Mets, or whether it's the
- 12:48Speaker 1: Blue Jays. And the assumption has been and it's still
- 12:52Speaker 1: the right call, that the Yankees will resign Bellinger, that
- 12:56Speaker 1: that's going to happen. But once Tucker goes, assuming this
- 13:00Speaker 1: happens in sequence here, once Tucker is gone and off
- 13:04Speaker 1: the board, those teams might step up their pursuits of
- 13:08Speaker 1: Cody Bellinger. And maybe it's not fat accompany for the Yankees.
- 13:11Speaker 1: So this is something to watch in the hours and
- 13:14Speaker 1: days ahead.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Okay, So we go from whether Bellinger's going to sign
- 13:19Speaker 2: somewhere if they don't get Tucker to the Baltimore Orioles,
- 13:22Speaker 2: which in the Al East can they have done some things?
- 13:25Speaker 2: So this question is in regards to the o's from
- 13:28Speaker 2: Rhino Thunder sixty eight, what do you think the Orioles
- 13:30Speaker 2: do for pitching?
- 13:32Speaker 1: Good question now from ber Valdez still out there, Zach
- 13:35Speaker 1: Gallen's still out there. Those are free agents. I don't
- 13:38Speaker 1: know that the Orioles are loving the idea of giving
- 13:41Speaker 1: up a draft pick, but they have said they would
- 13:43Speaker 1: do it, and they would do it. They didn't have
- 13:46Speaker 1: to do it for Peter a Lonzo, who had gotten
- 13:47Speaker 1: a qualifying offer last year. Then there are trade possibilities
- 13:51Speaker 1: now Freddie Peralta would be a one year guy. There's
- 13:54Speaker 1: Mackenzie Gore right down the road from Baltimore in Washington.
- 13:58Speaker 1: I don't know that there are many more options Trek
- 14:01Speaker 1: Scoogle and don't expect to be traded. I know the
- 14:04Speaker 1: Tigers have not shut the door, but teams never shut
- 14:06Speaker 1: the door. So the Orioles right now, it looks like
- 14:11Speaker 1: to me Valdez would be their play. Now. I don't
- 14:14Speaker 1: know that from any inside perspective or anything like that.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Michae Elias, of course familiar with Valdez from his time
- 14:20Speaker 1: in Houston, and Valdez would be for them a really
- 14:25Speaker 1: good addition in addition to what they've done already, which
- 14:29Speaker 1: is Shane Boz and Zach Eflin on top of Trevor
- 14:33Speaker 1: Rodgers and Kyle Bradish in that rotation along with Dean Kramer.
- 14:36Speaker 1: So one more would put them in a really good spot.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Ken Brandon Donovan seems to come up in a lot
- 14:43Speaker 2: of different conversations about where he's going to land in
- 14:47Speaker 2: twenty twenty six, Saint Louis Perfecto's wants to know. Looking
- 14:50Speaker 2: at donovan suitors, who do you believe is the favorite?
- 14:53Speaker 2: Could nowt Bar get paired in a deal to Seattle
- 14:56Speaker 2: to help fill rightfield as well? Remember, of course, that
- 14:58Speaker 2: Arenado now no longer in Saint Louis, so there's some
- 15:01Speaker 2: more news. As far as the Saint Louis Cardinals are concerned.
- 15:04Speaker 1: I still see Seattle as the favorite, and the reason
- 15:07Speaker 1: for that is their farm system is one of the
- 15:09Speaker 1: best in the game. San Francisco is in the mix
- 15:12Speaker 1: and has been for Donovan for quite some time, as
- 15:14Speaker 1: Katie Wu reported, but their farm system is not very
- 15:18Speaker 1: good at all, and they don't have much to give
- 15:21Speaker 1: that the Cardinals would necessarily want. Then there is Kansas City.
- 15:25Speaker 1: They've been kind of on the fringes of this thing
- 15:27Speaker 1: the whole time. I don't see them necessarily outbidding the Mariners,
- 15:31Speaker 1: but they do have some interesting young pitching in particular.
- 15:35Speaker 1: So those are the teams, and I do believe he'll
- 15:38Speaker 1: get dealt and the idea of neot Bar and Donovan
- 15:40Speaker 1: together to Seattle, I could see that being a possibility
- 15:44Speaker 1: really quickly.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Circling back on from Berveldez, are you surprised Ken He's
- 15:48Speaker 2: still available.
- 15:50Speaker 1: A little bit, but there have been questions about him
- 15:53Speaker 1: that incident with his catcher last year, makeup in general,
- 15:56Speaker 1: that's been one thing. He's a little older for free
- 16:00Speaker 1: that's another thing. So given the pace of this market,
- 16:03Speaker 1: I can't say I'm shocked, but at the same time,
- 16:07Speaker 1: his moment should be coming pretty soon.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Okay, talking about the New York Mets. Our next question
- 16:13Speaker 2: here on Gorilla and Ken the Metropolitans. A lot of
- 16:16Speaker 2: it is about whether they're going to get Tucker or not,
- 16:18Speaker 2: but this one wants to know. Are the Mets more
- 16:20Speaker 2: likely to look for starting pitching through free agency or
- 16:23Speaker 2: through the trade market.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Well, ditto to everything I said with the Orioles, but
- 16:27Speaker 1: the Mets preference has been a trade so that could
- 16:31Speaker 1: be paral to it, could be Gore, could be someone
- 16:33Speaker 1: else that we don't have in mind necessarily with from
- 16:36Speaker 1: bra Valdez, I could see the Mets doing something short
- 16:39Speaker 1: with him. They do not want to go long term
- 16:41Speaker 1: with starting pitching. We've seen that time and time again
- 16:44Speaker 1: play out, and I wouldn't necessarily rule out Gallon for
- 16:47Speaker 1: them either. Depending on how things play out here.
- 16:50Speaker 2: All right, We're going to see what happens. In terms
- 16:52Speaker 2: of the Mets. I think everyone's just really can trying
- 16:54Speaker 2: to figure out where the heck is Kyle Tucker going.
- 16:58Speaker 2: There's a question here that says, do you think by
- 16:59Speaker 2: the the week we would see where Kyle Tucker senns
- 17:02Speaker 2: I would imagine right most folks thinking it could happen today, Ken.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Yes, that's my expectation today, tomorrow, sometime this week, and
- 17:10Speaker 1: as you just pointed out, a lot of Once that happens,
- 17:13Speaker 1: the outfield market will open up. Bellinger will go, and
- 17:16Speaker 1: then some of the lesser outfielders Harrison Bade or Austin Hayes,
- 17:20Speaker 1: guys like that, they'll be able to find their homes too,
- 17:23Speaker 1: because right now it's all contingent on Tucker and not
- 17:27Speaker 1: just the outfielders. By the way, there are pitching moves
- 17:30Speaker 1: that are contingent on Tucker. A team might think if
- 17:34Speaker 1: we don't get him the Mets, for instance, if they
- 17:35Speaker 1: don't get him, they will pivot in other ways and
- 17:39Speaker 1: perhaps invest more in a picture than they might have otherwise.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Man Tucker the man of the hour, at least the
- 17:45Speaker 2: man of the day. Another question on Kyle here, what
- 17:47Speaker 2: do you make of the fact that the Mets offer
- 17:49Speaker 2: is public, but the Jays and Dodgers offers not public.
- 17:53Speaker 2: In regards to Kyle Tucker, I.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Don't know what to make of that, and I'm not
- 17:58Speaker 1: going to say where I think that figure came from,
- 18:01Speaker 1: although I think I have an idea where it came from.
- 18:04Speaker 1: But getting that number out there is probably in Tucker's
- 18:08Speaker 1: best interest because it would push the two other teams higher,
- 18:13Speaker 1: and that generally is where you see these things play
- 18:16Speaker 1: out the way you see these things play out, So
- 18:19Speaker 1: that certainly is a possibility that his side wanted it
- 18:23Speaker 1: out there to obviously make the other teams jump. But
- 18:28Speaker 1: I will not say exactly again what I think about
- 18:31Speaker 1: where that came from, because I don't know, and sometimes
- 18:34Speaker 1: things come from places that are unexpected. I know this
- 18:36Speaker 1: for a fact having done this a long time, and
- 18:40Speaker 1: it's just interesting that it happened that way, And certainly
- 18:42Speaker 1: it does work in Tucker's favor if he indeed wants
- 18:47Speaker 1: those other teams to come up in their price.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Drive up the market. I love this question. Our last
- 18:52Speaker 2: one here for Grill and Ken. Alex Bregman will wear
- 18:54Speaker 2: number three with the Cubs because Nico Horner wears number two.
- 18:57Speaker 2: If Ken were a Cubs fan, would he wait to
- 19:01Speaker 2: buy that Bregman jersey in case number two suddenly became available.
- 19:06Speaker 1: I would wait, just to be sure. You never know
- 19:09Speaker 1: in baseball, you never know in the offseason. But the
- 19:12Speaker 1: question ultimately is do I expect the Cubs to trade
- 19:15Speaker 1: Nico Horner their current number two? And the answer to
- 19:18Speaker 1: that is no. I just do not understand why you
- 19:21Speaker 1: would make moves for Edward Cabrera and Alex Bregman win
- 19:25Speaker 1: now moves and then go trade a second baseman who
- 19:28Speaker 1: is coming off a magnificent year. I don't care if
- 19:30Speaker 1: he has just one year of club control remaining. Sign
- 19:33Speaker 1: him to an extension and keep your twenty twenty sixteen
- 19:37Speaker 1: as strong as possible. I do not expect the Cubs
- 19:39Speaker 1: to trade Nico Horner. Might they trade Matt Shaw? Perhaps
- 19:43Speaker 1: more realistic, But even then I would like to keep
- 19:46Speaker 1: Shaw too for depth, and give Gregman days off, give
- 19:49Speaker 1: Horner days off, put him in the outfield at times.
- 19:53Speaker 1: It's your best possible team with all of those guys.
- 19:56Speaker 2: How about Alex Bregman Just by Nico Horner a Porsche
- 19:59Speaker 2: or Rolex, and then Alex Bragman can get number two
- 20:02Speaker 2: and you can just go get the jersey right now.
- 20:04Speaker 2: I mean, I think Alex Bregman will be wearing number
- 20:06Speaker 2: two at the beginning of twenty twenty six. All right,
- 20:09Speaker 2: coming up after the break on Fair Territory with Ken Rosenthal,
- 20:13Speaker 2: we're talking about our dudes and dorks of the week.
- 20:16Speaker 3: We'll be right back, bet I'MGM account holders today. How

- 20:32Speaker 3: when you get a chance, subscribe to Foul Territory on YouTube.
- 20:36Speaker 3: We are getting very close to three hundred thousand subscribers
- 20:40Speaker 3: on the channel and love all of them, so we'd
- 20:42Speaker 3: love you to join us on that channel as we
- 20:45Speaker 3: break down everything going on across the sport. It is
- 20:49Speaker 3: baseball the way it should be covered at Foul Territory.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Give us a sub.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Dude, dude, dude, all right, Ken, who's your due.
- 21:02Speaker 1: To the week? Ranger Suarez and so often in baseball,
- 21:07Speaker 1: Lina and you know this from having covered the game
- 21:09Speaker 1: as long as you have, we don't have a full
- 21:13Speaker 1: grasp of the backstories. When a player signs a free
- 21:15Speaker 1: agent contract. Ranger Suarez five years, one hundred and thirty million,
- 21:19Speaker 1: that's what people know. What people might not know is
- 21:22Speaker 1: that he is the son of a Venezuelan farmer. He
- 21:25Speaker 1: signed for twenty five thousand dollars. That was his big bonus.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Twenty five thousand dollars in a relative sense in baseball,
- 21:32Speaker 1: that's nothing. He also took four years to escape the
- 21:37Speaker 1: phillies of Venezuelan academy, so he didn't get state side
- 21:40Speaker 1: until his fourth year in pro ball. And now look
- 21:42Speaker 1: at him, five years, one hundred and thirty million. Ranger
- 21:45Speaker 1: Suarez due to the Week.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, I love that living the dream and fulfilling
- 21:50Speaker 2: a dream. I'm sure not only for himself but for
- 21:52Speaker 2: his family. My dude to the Week is a guy
- 21:54Speaker 2: that I love that can just make fun of himself.
- 21:57Speaker 2: And if I want to bring up a tweet here
- 21:58Speaker 2: from Carl Rabbits, if we have it, but Carl Rabbits
- 22:01Speaker 2: was talking about the fact that of course Alex Bregman,
- 22:04Speaker 2: you know, is going to wear number two because he
- 22:07Speaker 2: wore number two because Dansby Swanson in the same year
- 22:11Speaker 2: that he was drafted, was drafted number one. Okay, so
- 22:14Speaker 2: Alex Bragman was a little irritated that he wasn't taken
- 22:16Speaker 2: number one because he's that competitor. So that's why Alex
- 22:19Speaker 2: Bregman wears number two. It's a well known story. But
- 22:21Speaker 2: Vinnie pass Quentino tweeted this, this is why I wanted
- 22:24Speaker 2: to wear number three hundred and nineteen, but three digit
- 22:27Speaker 2: numbers aren't allowed. I love that he was a drafted
- 22:29Speaker 2: what the three hundred and nineteenth pick, and he's having
- 22:32Speaker 2: a fine career. So Vinnie pass Quentino and your humor,
- 22:35Speaker 2: you are my dude of the week. Okay, time now
- 22:38Speaker 2: for the dork of the week. Ken this one on
- 22:50Speaker 2: a much more serious note, Who is your dork of
- 22:53Speaker 2: the week.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Well, it's getting to the point alion with the Angels
- 22:57Speaker 1: where we might have to rename the award the Artiber
- 23:00Speaker 1: Dork of the Week. We once had a John Fisher
- 23:02Speaker 1: Dork of the Week. We abandoned that, but the Angels
- 23:05Speaker 1: seem to be in this category every week, and I
- 23:07Speaker 1: encourage everyone out there to read Sam Blum's story yesterday
- 23:11Speaker 1: about an Angel's prospect who was in a car accident
- 23:15Speaker 1: last September and is in a really bad place and
- 23:18Speaker 1: he doesn't know if the Angels are going to keep
- 23:21Speaker 1: his insurance going after this month. He's twenty two years old.
- 23:25Speaker 1: His name is Real Foster, and he's a guy who
- 23:28Speaker 1: had some promise, had done some things as an outfielder
- 23:31Speaker 1: coming up in their system, former thirteenth round pick. It
- 23:34Speaker 1: was a horrible situation that happened. A woman was driving drunk.
- 23:39Speaker 1: He was the passenger in that car. He also was drunk.
- 23:41Speaker 1: He was not wearing a seatbelt. Okay, but we have
- 23:45Speaker 1: seen time and time again organizations step up for players
- 23:49Speaker 1: in need. Maybe the Angels will do that, and we
- 23:52Speaker 1: don't know. They did not comment for this story, but
- 23:55Speaker 1: they need to do it. And it seems that so
- 23:57Speaker 1: often this team is in these kinds of situations and
- 24:01Speaker 1: we don't need to recount them all here, but the
- 24:04Speaker 1: Angels of Dorks of the Week until proven otherwise in
- 24:07Speaker 1: this case, and if they step up, we will be
- 24:09Speaker 1: happy to acknowledge that on the show.
- 24:12Speaker 2: And they should step up. And it just reminds me
- 24:13Speaker 2: of a team up the Five, the Los Angeles Dodgers
- 24:16Speaker 2: who continue to have Andrew Toles on the payroll. Andrew
- 24:20Speaker 2: Tooles has dealt with a lot of mental issues. He's schizophrenic,
- 24:24Speaker 2: diagnosed as a schizophrenic, and the Los Angeles Dodgers have
- 24:27Speaker 2: kept him on their insurance plan to try to continue
- 24:30Speaker 2: to get him the help that he so desperately needs.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Whether he's taken advantage of that or not. Continues to
- 24:36Speaker 2: be seen on a year and a year out basis,
- 24:38Speaker 2: but they're still in touch with his family as they
- 24:40Speaker 2: try to get Andrew the mental health that mental health
- 24:45Speaker 2: help that he needs. So again, take a page out
- 24:49Speaker 2: of the Dodgers' book, because they're doing the right thing.
- 24:52Speaker 2: And when you're a team that has the money that
- 24:54Speaker 2: the Dodgers have, of course, and the money that Ardi
- 24:57Speaker 2: Moreno has, of course, you can do the right things.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Some things are just bigger than baseball. All right, we
- 25:02Speaker 2: welcome you back. If you're still here, we appreciate you
- 25:04Speaker 2: guys listening and watching on YouTube. We're going to take
- 25:07Speaker 2: a couple of more questions here from the chat. Are
- 25:09Speaker 2: the Yankees still in on starters? If so in free agency,
- 25:13Speaker 2: can or via trade?
- 25:15Speaker 1: They just acquired Ryan Weathers for for prospects from the
- 25:18Speaker 1: Miami Marlins. I don't know that they'll do anything else.
- 25:22Speaker 1: I would not expect it to be a major move necessarily. Remember,
- 25:26Speaker 1: they've got Cole coming back, They've got Schmid coming back,
- 25:28Speaker 1: They've got Rodin coming back. Actually in reverse order of
- 25:31Speaker 1: what I just said, Rodin first. So they needed someone
- 25:36Speaker 1: like Weathers to be a bridge. Remember they had been
- 25:38Speaker 1: talking to the Marlins about Edward Cabrera, and then once
- 25:41Speaker 1: Cabrero went to the Cubs, they pivoted to Weathers. Could
- 25:44Speaker 1: they do more? Of course they could do more. They
- 25:47Speaker 1: always can do more. But their focus right now is Bellinger,
- 25:51Speaker 1: and if they do not get Bellinger back, then it's
- 25:53Speaker 1: a whole other question. How they go about finding another
- 25:57Speaker 1: bat of that caliber? Yeah? About that?
- 26:00Speaker 2: All right? One more question I think here on as
- 26:03Speaker 2: we get ready to sign off from the YouTube folks,
- 26:06Speaker 2: what happens ken to Alec Boom. We haven't talked about
- 26:09Speaker 2: the Phillies at all today, but he's not going to
- 26:10Speaker 2: be there. Where do you think he ends up?
- 26:13Speaker 1: I don't know. And the question obviously refers back to
- 26:17Speaker 1: Bobachhett and the expectation by many in the industry. Matt
- 26:20Speaker 1: Gilb has written about this for The Athletic that ultimately
- 26:24Speaker 1: Bishett will wind up of Philly and probably at third base.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Once that happens, Bom goes now. They've been trying to
- 26:31Speaker 1: trade him for the better part of a year now,
- 26:34Speaker 1: haven't been able to accomplish it. Could it be the
- 26:37Speaker 1: Red Sox. I guess it could be the Red Sox,
- 26:39Speaker 1: but they're aiming other players too. It could be any
- 26:43Speaker 1: number of teams with Alec Bohm. He is a good player.
- 26:46Speaker 1: He is not a bad player. This guy is an
- 26:48Speaker 1: above average Major leaguer and I would think, even though
- 26:51Speaker 1: he's got one year left, it's about ten million that
- 26:54Speaker 1: the Phillies could get something of some quality in return.
- 26:58Speaker 2: All right, Kyle Tucker, all of us in the baseball world,
- 27:01Speaker 2: all of us that love this sport so much, please
- 27:03Speaker 2: sign so we can figure out where you're going and
- 27:05Speaker 2: the rest of those dominoes can fall. Thank you guys
- 27:08Speaker 2: for watching and listening. Foul Territories Next, Todd Frazier, Eric
- 27:12Speaker 2: Kratz and Scott Braun Welcome, Padres, pitcher Mason Miller, Angels,
- 27:15Speaker 2: starter Grayson Rodriguez. Fair with Ken returns on Monday at
