- 0:08right back! It might be! It could be! It is!
- 0:13A home run! Hello again, everybody. This is Harry
- 0:19Carey. With Jack Buck, I was behind the microphone
- 0:22as Gas House Baseball and the nationally pennant
- 0:24returned to St. Louis for the first time in 18
- 0:26years. Harry, I know we weren't as sure as you
- 0:44sounded with that prediction. You made it in
- 0:46April on a cool, windy Friday night in Frisco
- 0:48during the Cardinals' third game of the year.
- 0:51And it wasn't until October and the last day
- 0:53of the season that it all came true. A team that
- 0:56at midseason had trailed by as many as 13 games
- 0:59battled back to win it all in as thrilling and
- 1:02hectic a climax as baseball has ever known. Perhaps
- 1:05thrills as great as those of summer 64 can never
- 1:08be completely recaptured, Jack. But we've tried.
- 1:11And you're about to hear what we feel are some
- 1:13of the highlights of the season as they sounded
- 1:15when the action took place. Maybe we'd like to
- 1:17change a few words now after hearing them again,
- 1:19but this is what was heard on the Cardinals baseball
- 1:22network as the Redbirds fought their way to the
- 1:24flag. Jack, it was a season in which every victory
- 1:36was awfully important and every defeat a real
- 1:39tragedy. But in looking back, now that the heat
- 1:41of battle has abated, one of the games that looms
- 1:44large in my mind is the come -from -behind victory
- 1:46we registered against Sandy Koufax and the Dodgers
- 1:49on a sultry midseason Friday night in St. Louis.
- 1:52That was a dandy, all right. We trailed 7 -1
- 1:55early in the ballgame, but instead of riding
- 1:57it off, the Redbirds came bouncing back, and
- 1:59after 3 hours and 15 minutes of baseball, we
- 2:02had moved to within a run, had runners at 2nd
- 2:05and 3rd with 2 out on the 9th. and had Bob Skinner
- 2:08at the plate against ex -Cardinal Bobby Miller.
- 2:10End of the line to be goes. Here it is. A base
- 2:14hit. One run is in. Here's the winning run. The
- 2:17Cardinals win. The Cardinals win. The Cardinals
- 2:21win. Holy cow. The Cardinals win it. Eight to
- 2:25seven. Without that one, who knows where our
- 2:28guys would have spent mid -October. One of my
- 2:31most vivid memories of the 64 season also occurred
- 2:34in July in Pittsburgh. It was our first and best
- 2:38rhubarb with the men in blue. Here's Harry. There's
- 2:40a stretch. A pitch. A bouncing ball to the first
- 2:44baseman. Here's Brock trying to score. He knocks
- 2:47the catcher over and he's safe. I couldn't either,
- 3:17Jack, but it felt a little bit better when we
- 3:19went on to win that ball game. I remember National
- 3:21League president Warren Giles sent you season's
- 3:23greetings before we finished rehashing that one.
- 3:26We had good days and bad ones as the season rolled
- 3:28along, and perhaps the lowest point of all occurred
- 3:31the evening of June 5th in Cincinnati as Glenn
- 3:34Hobby, just acquired from the Chicago Cubs, made
- 3:37his first Cardinal start. At the start of the
- 3:40evening, things looked wonderful. Not only did
- 3:42Hobby's arm appear to be good... But so did his
- 3:45bat. Now the pitch on the way. There's a drive.
- 3:49Deep left field. Way back. It might be out of
- 3:52here. Harper near the fence. It could be. It
- 3:55is! A home run for Hobbies. We had a 4 -1 lead
- 3:59in the ninth when Hobby ran out of gas. Roger
- 4:02Cray came striding out of the bullpen to face
- 4:04Tommy Harper. The bases were loaded. There was
- 4:07one out. Cray gets set. Here's the windup. Here's
- 4:12the pitch on the way. He didn't mean to swing.
- 4:14A little roller down the third. Right through
- 4:16Boyer's leg. One run in. Two runs in. Another
- 4:19man goes to third. Harper didn't even want to
- 4:26swing. The ball was hit that softly. He fell
- 4:29away. The ball hit his bat. Rolled down the third
- 4:32baseline. How it ever got through Boyer, he himself
- 4:37will never be able to tell you. He must have
- 4:40looked up to see. what play he would have, and
- 4:44two runs score on it. And the tying runs now
- 4:47at third, and still only one out. After that,
- 4:50Pinson was intentionally passed, and Bobby Shantz
- 4:53came on to face left -handed hitting Gordy Coleman.
- 4:56But instead it was a right -handed hitter, Darren
- 4:58Johnson, who stepped in, and Redbird fortunes
- 5:01were about to sink to a new low. There's the
- 5:03line, here's the pitch. There's a base hit up
- 5:07the middle, and the Reds are going to win the
- 5:08ball game. Here's the winning run scoring, the
- 5:11throw to the plate. The Reds win. Darren Johnson,
- 5:15single to center. Five. I don't know how you
- 5:21can lose some of these ballgames, but we do.
- 5:25So the Reds, almost unbelievable. And it's all
- 5:30over. The Reds score four in the ninth and beat
- 5:33the Cardinals five to four. That was the second
- 5:37of a four -game losing streak. But about that
- 5:39time, as the Cardinals sputtered and faltered,
- 5:41unable to gain momentum, another acquisition
- 5:44from the Cubs, Lou Brock, began to assert himself
- 5:47in all phases of the game. He was a consistent
- 5:50.300 hitter. Not a great outfielder, but a fellow
- 5:53with a flair for making the big play. Slow ball,
- 5:56swung on, and drive, back to left. Way back at
- 5:59Brock, he jumps. Holy cow, did he make the catch
- 6:03or not? And oh, how he could run. There's the
- 6:32stretch. And the pitch to Dick Gross. There goes
- 6:36a runner. Low into the dirt. There'll be no play.
- 6:38A stolen base for Brock. A curveball that broke
- 6:42into the dirt. So Brock has now stolen 16 bases
- 6:47already this year. And his blinding speed seemed
- 6:49to ignite the spark as suddenly Gas House Baseball
- 6:52came back to Bush Stadium. The pitch to Skinner.
- 6:55Swung on and a bouncing ball to first base. I
- 6:57don't think they'll get two. Out at second. Safe
- 7:00at first and the run scores. And the Phillies
- 7:02charge out and argue about the call. Now another
- 7:06man trying to score, and Brock is safe at the
- 7:10plate. Now Boyer's going to third, and the ball's
- 7:15thrown into left field. Boyer rounds third base.
- 7:18Yes, gas house baseball was back. And suddenly
- 7:21the Cardinals were making an amazing drive. And
- 7:24the season moved into that final hectic week.
- 7:27Remember how it was? You fans opened your morning
- 7:29paper on September 28th. Cincinnati led by one
- 7:32over the fading Phillies and by one and a half
- 7:35over the onrushing Cardinals. An ironic twist
- 7:37was developing in St. Louis as the Cardinals
- 7:40got ready to host the Phillies. One year earlier,
- 7:43nearly to the day, St. Louis had opened a crucial
- 7:46homestand on a Monday night, that time against
- 7:49the Los Angeles Dodgers, who led us by a game.
- 7:52We lost all three on that occasion, and the Dodgers
- 7:55breezed home to win it all. This time... Another
- 7:58homestand was opening on a late September Monday
- 8:01night, and again, in the clutch. The way things
- 8:04started for the Cardinals, you had horrible visions
- 8:07of a rerun. Bouncing ball, he's got a chance
- 8:10to beat it out. Hey, Boyer and Grote collide,
- 8:13and it goes for a hit. But this was a different
- 8:15year. Bob Gibson shook that one off as rookie
- 8:18of the year Richie Allen stepped in. There's
- 8:21the double play ball to Grote. Javier won. First
- 8:26base, two. From Groot to Javier to White. It
- 8:37was scoreless in the second when Bill White,
- 8:39a first -half flop and a second -half sensation,
- 8:42stepped to the plate. Here's Bill White. There's
- 8:46a shot to right, a base hit. He might have to
- 8:49hold it first, and he does. The first cardinal
- 8:52hit by White is a solid single to right. Next,
- 8:56it was Julian Javier. Javier digs in. The stretch.
- 9:06And the pitch. Ground ball up the middle. Center
- 9:09field. Base hit. Right around second. On his
- 9:11way to third. The Cardinals have runners at first
- 9:14and third. Veteran Chris Short got ahead of young
- 9:16Mike Shannon. Two strikes, no balls. Here's the
- 9:19stretch. And the pitch. There's a high fly ball.
- 9:24Deep left field. Way back. It's going to be caught.
- 9:28A run scored. Sacrifice fly. The Cardinals never
- 9:32lost that lead. It was 5 -1 in the ninth before
- 9:35the Phillies made their move. The first two men
- 9:38reached base against a tiring Gibson, and out
- 9:40of the bullpen came 41 -year -old Barney Schultz.
- 9:43Harry Carey was at the microphone as Schultz
- 9:46faced Clay Dalrymple. There's the pitch. Hot
- 9:51shot to White. He's got it. Second base, one.
- 9:53First base, two. Double play. Johnny Herrnstein
- 10:00faced the veteran knuckleballer next. Barney
- 10:03Schultz winds. Here it is. Popped up. We got
- 10:08this ball game. Bill White waiting. And the Cardinals
- 10:11win. The Redbirds are only one game out of first
- 10:19place. So, Jack, we had passed Philadelphia,
- 10:21but the idle Cincinnati club still led. The Cardinals
- 10:25simply couldn't afford to lose. Young Ray Sadecki
- 10:28got the pitching assignment the next night, and
- 10:30after the Cardinals had scrambled to a 3 -2 sixth
- 10:32inning lead, it was again Bill White who provided
- 10:35the insurance. The pitch is made by Boozer, and
- 10:39there's a drive to deep right center field. Way
- 10:41back, way back, near the clock. Home run! He
- 11:02got a fastball and he drilled it into the pavilion
- 11:04seats just below the clock, beyond the .354 mark,
- 11:09and back about five rows to put the Cardinals
- 11:12out in front 4 -2. And again, the call went out
- 11:16to Barney Schultz. And Jack, what a job he did
- 11:19in those final few days. On that occasion, he
- 11:21worked beautifully through the 7th and 8th. We
- 11:23were spotting our ball game out and keeping an
- 11:25eye on the Reds as Schultz towed the rubber in
- 11:27the 9th. Pete Rose is the hitter with a runner
- 11:29on first and two out on the bottom of the ninth
- 11:31at Cincinnati. Three balls, two strikes. Here's
- 11:40the signal given. Barney Schultz winds. Here's
- 11:43the pitch to Triandas now. He stuck him out,
- 11:46swinging. Triandas goes down swinging. Two more
- 11:53and it'll all be over. Johnny Callison was next.
- 11:56One ball, no strike. Here's the pitch on the
- 11:58way. A high fly ball. Deep left center field.
- 12:01Flood going out. Brock is there. Lose. Got it.
- 12:05Two out. That's two gone. And it all ended on
- 12:12a high note. Here's the pitch. A bouncing ball
- 12:15to Boyer. He's got it. Here's the throw. Cardinals
- 12:18win it. And look at those Redbirds bouncing around.
- 12:25The Cardinals have won their ballgame, 4 -2.
- 12:33Pittsburgh has won! Pittsburgh won its ballgame!
- 12:372 -0, it's over! Pittsburgh has just beat the
- 12:40Reds, 2 -0! The National League race is in a
- 12:44tie! Holy cow! Never has it been a more thrilling
- 12:50moment. Within 15 seconds after the Cardinals
- 12:53won... Mazeroski threw out Ruiz, and the Pirates
- 12:57shut out the Reds 2 -0. The National League race
- 13:00is all tied up. And the Phillies in third place
- 13:04stay only a game and a half out. That set the
- 13:07scene for Wednesday night, with Kurt Simmons
- 13:09opposing Jim Bunning as our Cardinals went for
- 13:12the sweep. The honorary mayor of Memphis, Tennessee,
- 13:15Tim McCarver, gave us a second -inning lead.
- 13:18Two balls and a strike. Here's a pick. There's
- 13:21a drive right back! Cardinals lead 2 -0. And
- 13:45that lead stood up. Another lefty, rookie Gordon
- 13:47Richardson, relieved Simmons when the Phillies
- 13:49threatened mildly in the late going. Here's how
- 13:52it ended. Two balls, two strikes. From the belt
- 13:59to pitch. Here it is. A bouncing ball. They should
- 14:02do it. The Cardinals are in first place. The
- 14:09Redbirds win it 8 -5, Gordon Richardson being
- 14:11congratulated. As Bobby Wine bounced the groan
- 14:15who tossed to Javier for the foreside. And now
- 14:18the pressure has been put on by the Cardinals.
- 14:20The Cardinals have taken over first place pending
- 14:24the outcome of the Cincinnati game. That one
- 14:26really did some pending until past 1 a .m. as
- 14:30Harry and I sat in a darkened and deserted Bush
- 14:32Stadium. We were receiving direct reports from
- 14:35Cincinnati on the progress of that game. It was
- 14:38in the top of the 16th. Still a scoreless duel.
- 14:41A rookie catcher named Jerry May was hitting
- 14:44for the Pirates. And we, like you, heard this
- 14:47good news. Harry Carey was his usual calm and
- 15:13collected self as we listened to the bottom of
- 15:15the 16th. and it was off the bag but turned in
- 15:39and grabbed and tagged him. One out. Two more.
- 15:42Let's go. One, two, three, and out. No thrills.
- 15:45You've worked a tremendous job, Jim. The ground
- 15:48ball hit the school field. The duck is up. Throw
- 15:50to first. Two outs, Harry. One more, baby. Two
- 15:55men out. One more out, and your Redbirds will
- 15:58be in first place. You can see the pressure on
- 16:01the Bucs. I mean, Verdon is walking around in
- 16:03circles out in center field. Moda was doing the
- 16:05same thing in right. And Mazeroski drawing little
- 16:08designs with his feet down at second base. No
- 16:11balls, two strikes on Pinson. McBean is ready.
- 16:15Here comes the pitch to Veda. It's a ground ball
- 16:18to the right side. Mazeroski has it. You're in
- 16:20first place, Harry. Hooray! Excited we all were,
- 16:24Jack. And now the Cardinals led by one. But Thursday
- 16:27the Reds bounced back, and the lead was down
- 16:30to a slim half game as the last place New York
- 16:33Mets came to town for the final three games of
- 16:35the season. On Friday, everybody lost. Gibson
- 16:39was shut out 1 -0 by Al Jackson, and the Phillies
- 16:42came out of their trance and beat Cincinnati.
- 16:45Saturday? Well, we'd rather not talk about Saturday.
- 16:49The Reds tied things while taking the day off
- 16:52as a supposedly inept Mets bombed the Cardinals
- 16:5615 -5. So we were right back where we started
- 17:00on opening day, April the 14th, tied for the
- 17:03lead. And it all boiled down to October the 4th,
- 17:071964. And so the whole season had come down to
- 17:10one day, one game. Still hopeful, trailing by
- 17:15one, the Phillies went at it again in Cincinnati.
- 17:17While in St. Louis, a grim group of Redbirds
- 17:20behind Kurt Simmons again faced a loose, relaxed
- 17:23bunch of Stengalites who knew they were going
- 17:25nowhere but home when it ended. But nobody in
- 17:28our club had done any packing. A second inning
- 17:31Mike Shannon single and a fourth inning Charlie
- 17:33Smith homer. had things knotted at one -to -one
- 17:36as the Cardinals batted in the fourth. Dick Grote
- 17:39led off with a double, but McCarver and Shannon
- 17:41were unable to move him along. That brought Dal
- 17:44Maxfield to the plate. He was hitting only .222,
- 17:47and in the lineup only because of an injury to
- 17:50Javier. Too bad the youngster had to be hitting
- 17:53in the clutch. There's the stretch. And the pitch
- 17:57to Maxville. Here it is. Line drive. Base hit.
- 18:00Here's a man going to try to score. Here's Jim
- 18:02Hickman up with the ball. And he scores. The
- 18:04Cardinals lead 2 -1. The Phillies led Cincinnati
- 18:074 -0, and the Cardinals had a slim lead. It didn't
- 18:11hold up. With a runner at second and one away
- 18:14in the fifth, Simmons appeared to get Bobby Klaus
- 18:16on an easy pop fly. But wait a minute. The delivery
- 18:20on the way. There's a high pop fly. That should
- 18:22be caught by somebody. Maxville is there. He's
- 18:25under the ball. Oh, he lets it drop. And here's
- 18:29the runner on third holding up. Klaus winds up
- 18:32at second base. Shannon could have caught the
- 18:34ball. But Maxville had called for it. And the
- 18:37wind grabbed it. Come on, Mike. Take those kinds.
- 18:44Gee, an easy pop fly. Now they have the leading
- 18:47run at second. The tying run at third. They put
- 18:50those runners elsewhere in a hurry, thanks to
- 18:53a tough little competitor named Roy McMillan.
- 18:56Infield in. Can Simmons pitch out of this? He's
- 19:00behind the hitter, two balls and nothing. Now
- 19:04he's ready. Into the windup he goes, and here's
- 19:12the pitch on the way. Line drive's going to score
- 19:15both, and the Mets have taken the lead. Into
- 19:18the corner, McMillan's on his way to second base.
- 19:22A double to left. And the Cardinals trail 3 -2.
- 19:34McMillan, a tough hitter. And now both of the,
- 19:37two of the teams, right now, if everything would
- 19:41end the way it is now, there'd be a triple tie
- 19:43starting tomorrow in Philadelphia. And so the
- 19:46Cardinals had to come from behind. But that was
- 19:49nothing new for our club. They'd been doing it
- 19:51all year. Lou Brock started it all with a walk.
- 19:54Bill White singled him to second. And then Kenny
- 19:57Boyer came to the plate. Have you ever heard
- 19:59anyone say about Boyer, oh, well, he can't get
- 20:02the big hit? Now the stretch. And the pitch to
- 20:06Boyer. A hot shot. Left field. Base hit. The
- 20:10tying run is in. Here's another man racing for
- 20:13third. There goes Boyer to second with a double.
- 20:16The Cardinals have tied it up. The Mets changed
- 20:18pitchers at this point, bringing ex -Cardinal
- 20:21farmhand Bill Wakefield into the fray. And while
- 20:24all this was going on in St. Louis, the Phillies
- 20:26wrapped things up against Cincinnati as Richie
- 20:28Allen hit his second homer of the day and the
- 20:31Phillies jumped into an insurmountable 9 -0 lead.
- 20:34Grote bounced out as the tie -breaking run scored.
- 20:37McCarver walked and Shannon fanned. But Maxville
- 20:40again came through with a single. That drove
- 20:43in the run that put us ahead 5 -3. Bob Gibson
- 20:46was on the mound, pitching with only one day's
- 20:48rest. He had staggered through the sixth, walking
- 20:51home the run that made it 5 -4. He was pitching
- 20:54with more heart than stuff. It was obvious the
- 20:57Cardinals needed more runs. After Flood went
- 21:00out to start the bottom of the inning, Lou Brock
- 21:02stepped up. The wind -up now, the pitch is on
- 21:05the way. A line drive base hit in the left center.
- 21:09He might be able to get a double out of it. He's
- 21:11around first. He's going to try for second. Here's
- 21:13Altman's throw. He is safe. So Brock doubles
- 21:19in the left center. He just took advantage of
- 21:24Altman's weak throwing arm. Here now is Bill
- 21:27White. A man in scoring position with one out.
- 21:29The Cardinals leading by a run 5 -4. The stretch.
- 21:38And the pitch. There's a drive. Way back. It
- 21:42might be. It could be. It is. A home run. Listen
- 21:48to the crowd. Look at those Redbirds in that
- 21:55dugout. Everybody's standing up. And the Cardinals
- 22:00lead 7 -4 now. Oh, is that a happy dugout. Gibson
- 22:06did the job in the 7th and again in the 8th.
- 22:08It was now 9 -4 as the Mets came up for their
- 22:119th inning cuts. They KO'd Bob Gibson, who had
- 22:14gone as long and as hard as he could. With two
- 22:17outs and a run -in, Barney Schultz was again
- 22:20in the ballgame, pitching to Ed Cranepool. Harry
- 22:23was working from a field box next to the Redbird
- 22:25dugout and with the Cardinals' official family.
- 22:29And in a jam -packed Bush Stadium, 18 years of
- 22:32frustration was about to be swept away. in one
- 22:36thrilling, dramatic, unforgettable moment. Listen
- 22:39to this crowd. Come on. Let's go. Get him out.
- 22:45Gussie Bush wasn't excited, was he? Now the stretch.
- 22:49Ready. Everybody standing up. The pitch. A high
- 22:53pop foul. The corner's there. The Cardinals won
- 22:57the pennant. The Cardinals won the pennant. The
- 23:00Cardinals won the pennant. Everybody out. Johnny.
- 23:05Everybody congratulating everybody. I don't know
- 23:08if they'll ever get here. I don't know if they'll
- 23:10ever get here. The Cardinals have just won the
- 23:13pennant. Mayhem on the field. Joe Schultz congratulating.
- 23:18Hey, Ray Washburn. Bob Skinner. Hey. Oh, hey,
- 23:25Tim. Timmy. Hey, Tim. Timmy. Hey, Tim. Come here.
- 23:29How about it, boy? It was great to see. That
- 23:54clubhouse was as wild as the impromptu on -the
- 23:56-field celebration you just heard. The first
- 23:59guy you got to, Harry, was the veteran up from
- 24:01Jacksonville who handled the bullpen heroics
- 24:04in those final frantic weeks, Barney Schultz.
- 24:06Ronnie, you can talk a little more now. How are
- 24:08you feeling? Harry, I'm feeling great. Great.
- 24:10What a thrill, huh? Well, Harry, not so much
- 24:14a thrill as getting them out in the ninth inning.
- 24:16After all, we had a seven -run lead. But the
- 24:19fact that it was a pennant riding on every pitch,
- 24:23regardless of the lead that we had, was the greatest
- 24:26ball game I ever completed in my life. Then Cardinal
- 24:29coach and now Redbird manager, Red Cheney was
- 24:32a happy fellow, too. What a thrill, huh? Great,
- 24:35great. It's a good thing we won it this way.
- 24:37Of course, Cincinnati got beat today, but it
- 24:39wasn't like if we'd have won the first game here
- 24:41and got beat today and walked in it. This is
- 24:43more exciting, I think, Harry. How about this
- 24:45ball cup in the World Series? What do you think?
- 24:47Well, we got a good chance. Bill White took the
- 24:49honors as the calmest Cardinal. And you feel
- 24:52so cool, man. Well, we won. We lose, and I don't
- 24:56feel too good. How do you feel about the World
- 24:59Series, Bill? Well, we play them just like we
- 25:01played this season, Harry, one at a time. And,
- 25:03of course, we played the Yankees before spring
- 25:05training. And I think we know most of ourselves.
- 25:08I think they know most of ours. So it should
- 25:11be a good series. Bill, it's something for a
- 25:14team to bounce back after losing two ballgames
- 25:16like you did to the Mets. The pressure, the chips
- 25:18are really down today, and they really banged
- 25:21out of it. Well, we hadn't gotten too many hits
- 25:23in the other series. scored so many runs, so
- 25:25the law of averages said, we've got to get some
- 25:27runs. And we were forced to get good pitching
- 25:30from Gibson for a while, and then Barney Jones
- 25:32came in, and it was just a good victory and a
- 25:37good win. Congratulations on a great year, Bill.
- 25:39Thank you, Harry. Which isn't over yet, though.
- 25:41No, we've still got another week. Jack, although
- 25:43most of it is unintelligible, my favorite chat,
- 25:46the one I think best depicts the hilarious frenzy
- 25:49at that Cardinal dressing room, is this interview
- 25:51with Mike Queller and Bob Euchre. I talk to Mike
- 25:54without an interpreter. This takes a... Hey,
- 25:57congratulations. Thank you, thank you, thank
- 26:00you. Why, what are you... Mucho dinero. Yeah,
- 26:14mucho, mucho dinero. Hey, you... Bob! Where is
- 26:21he? Bob Bucher, who's got everybody here. What
- 26:25do you got? You going to paint a house? Here
- 26:26we are in the Cardinal Clubhouse. Along with
- 26:32Jack Buck. Isn't it beautiful, Harry? Beautiful.
- 26:38Bonita. The proud Cardinal owner, August A. Bush
- 26:43Jr., made a prediction following the clinching
- 26:46of the pennant. Mr. Bush. Congratulations. How
- 26:50do you feel? I never was happier in all my live
- 26:53long life, Harry. And by gosh, after 18 years,
- 26:57we're now able to return to our fine fans, a
- 27:00real pennant team, and we're going to win the
- 27:02World Series. The Cardinals set about trying
- 27:05to do that when the series opened October the
- 27:077th in St. Louis. The Cardinals routed Whitey
- 27:09Ford, pounded out 12 hits, and with Ray Sadecki
- 27:12getting relief help from Barney Schultz, went
- 27:14on to a 9 -5 victory. The hero of the day was
- 27:17young Mike Shannon, who belted a homer off the
- 27:19scoreboard with a man on. It wasn't so pleasant
- 27:22on Thursday, as the Yankees evened things up
- 27:24with an 8 -3 victory behind rookie right -hander
- 27:26Mel Stottlemyre. A disputed call by umpire Bill
- 27:30McKinley. gave the Yankees a big sixth -inning
- 27:32run and set up more. But Gibson ran out of gas
- 27:35in that sixth, and Redbird relievers just didn't
- 27:38have it. Sharing honors with Stottlemyre was
- 27:41harmonica -playing shortstop Phil Lins, who chipped
- 27:44in with three hits, one of them a homer. Saturday,
- 27:47October the 10th, marked the third game of the
- 27:49series and the first in Yankee Stadium. Kurt
- 27:52Simmons for the Cardinals and Jim Boughton for
- 27:54the Yankees. Both worked effectively. Termites
- 27:57seemed to have invaded the Cardinal bat rack
- 27:59in critical situations. Simmons drove in our
- 28:02only run, and we had a man reach third in the
- 28:04sixth, seventh, and ninth. In each of those situations,
- 28:07we failed a score. Simmons was lifted for a pinch
- 28:10hitter in the ninth, and Mickey Mantle hit what
- 28:13Boynie Schultz called a non -knuckling knuckleball
- 28:15into the seats on the first pitch of the bottom
- 28:18of the ninth to give the Yankees a 2 -1 victory
- 28:20and a 2 -1 series lead. The way the Yankees pounced
- 28:24on Ray Sedecky in the first inning of the fourth
- 28:26game, it appeared the series would not return
- 28:29to St. Louis. Ray faced four men, they all reached
- 28:32base, and we trailed Al Downing 3 -0 through
- 28:35the first five innings. Carl Warwick started
- 28:38the sixth with a record -tying pinch single,
- 28:40and Flood also ripped a base hit. Then after
- 28:43Brock went out, Bobby Richardson couldn't get
- 28:46rid of a potential double play ball. It was an
- 28:48error, and the bases were loaded. But only for
- 28:51a moment. On downing second pitch to him, Ken
- 28:54Boyer smacked a grand slammer to give us a 4
- 28:57-3 lead that we never relinquished thanks to
- 29:00great relief pitching from Roger Craig and Ron
- 29:02Taylor. The series was tied again. The fifth
- 29:06game was the most thrilling of the series, Jack.
- 29:08On a sunshiny Monday in New York, Gibson and
- 29:11Stadelmeyer hooked up again, but with better
- 29:13results for Cardinal fans. Gibson was great.
- 29:16He led 2 -0 as the Yankees batted in the ninth.
- 29:19An error put a runner on first with one away,
- 29:21but Gibson made the defensive play of the World
- 29:23Series to throw out Joe Pepitone. Tom Tresh,
- 29:27however, hit a high fastball into the right center
- 29:29field bleachers to tie things up. In the 10th,
- 29:32Tim McCarver became the hero, belting one out
- 29:35of the ballpark, scoring Boyer and White ahead
- 29:37of him, giving Gibson a 5 -2 complete game victory
- 29:40and bringing the Cardinals home with a 3 -2 series
- 29:44lead. Everyone in St. Louis seemed confident
- 29:46the Cardinals would wrap it up on Wednesday,
- 29:48October 14th in the sixth game. Everybody, that
- 29:51is, except Yankee right -hander Jim Boughton
- 29:53and his teammates. Joe Pepitone hit a grand slammer.
- 29:58Marison Mantle belted back to bag homers. And
- 30:01Boughton, utilizing a sharp curve to go with
- 30:03his good fastball, was never in serious trouble
- 30:06as the Bronx Bombers romped to an 8 -3 victory.
- 30:09And again, Cardinal hopes are back to one day,
- 30:12one game, October 15, 1964, 18 years to the day
- 30:18since Enos Slaughter raced home with a run that
- 30:20won the Cardinals the 1946 World's Championship.
- 30:24Again, the call went to Bob Gibson for St. Louis
- 30:26and Mel Stottlemyre for New York. And again,
- 30:30it was gas house baseball that made the difference
- 30:32for the Cardinals. Hooked up in a nothing -nothing
- 30:34fourth -inning tie, the Cardinals got a run when
- 30:37the Yankees messed up another double playgrounder.
- 30:39This one hit by Tim McCarver. Tim moved to third
- 30:43on a Mike Shannon single and scored when a missed
- 30:45hit -and -run sign turned into a Cardinal double
- 30:48steal. A third run subsequently scored on another
- 30:51solid single by Dal Maxville. Boyer and Brock,
- 30:55both later homered, as Gibson, again working
- 30:57with two days rest, was hit hard in the late
- 31:00innings, but battled his way to a complete game
- 31:029 -5 win that ended at 3 .41 p .m., sending St.
- 31:07Louis into its most delirious frenzy since the
- 31:09end of World War II. The St. Louis Cardinals
- 31:13were again champions of the world. It has a good
- 31:16sound, Harry, and no team deserved victory more.
- 31:19I hope the fans have enjoyed our recap of the
- 31:22big ones. I hope so too, Jack. But you know,
- 31:25the more I think about 1964, the more one point
- 31:27sticks out in my mind. The World Series was fine,
- 31:30a great one to win, of course. But I'm sure you'll
- 31:33agree that when many years from now we get together
- 31:35and reminisce about baseball and the talk swings
- 31:38around to 1964, one fact will mean more than
- 31:42all the rest. 1964, the year... The Cardinals
- 31:47won the...
