- 0:00Welcome to Loud and Lifted Quick Lift, your under
- 0:0210 -minute hit of a clarity in action. I'm your
- 0:06host, Betsy Ham. Today, we're ripping a few pages
- 0:09from Meeta Malik's playbook, The Devil Emails
- 0:11at Midnight, aka how to spot bad bosses in others
- 0:15and ourselves and lead better, starting today.
- 0:18Her new book is a candid look at 13 types of
- 0:21bad bosses, including the chapter where Meeta
- 0:23owns the time she was one. The throw line, we
- 0:26can't change other people, but we can change
- 0:28ourselves. And we can lead with courage when
- 0:31we're stuck in tough cultures. Here are the takeaways
- 0:34and what to do next. Key takeaway number one,
- 0:45start with you. Self -awareness is the lever.
- 0:48Meeda shared the story about how she was a bad
- 0:50boss after she was dealing with guilt after her
- 0:53father's death. And the reality is we all have
- 0:55our bad boss moments and you have to take a minute
- 0:58and reflect on this. I mean... Don't get me wrong.
- 1:01I have definitely had my bad boss moments where
- 1:04I was the bad boss. And one example I think of
- 1:07early in my career, let's talk about something
- 1:08that happened a long time ago because it seems
- 1:10easier. I had people report to me when I was
- 1:12fairly young and they were older than me. And
- 1:15I really struggled with holding them accountable.
- 1:18And I wanted them to like me and I wanted them
- 1:20to respect me. So I kind of let them walk all
- 1:23over me thinking that was a way to get them.
- 1:26to like me. Now, I'm sure they probably did because
- 1:28a lot of them are doing whatever they wanted
- 1:30to, but that's not a good boss. I needed to set
- 1:33expectations and be very clear on what they were
- 1:36responsible for doing and hold them accountable.
- 1:38And that was certainly one of my bad boss moments.
- 1:41Don't worry, there's plenty more, but we'll save
- 1:43that for another day. So I think this also ties
- 1:46nicely into what we talked about in Lindsay's
- 1:48episode where she said you need to take a step
- 1:51back and ask your team members, how can I be
- 1:54a better boss for you? So that's our takeaway
- 1:56here and our action item is ask the people who
- 2:00are on your team. How can you be a better boss
- 2:03for them? And then fix one of those leadership
- 2:05habits. It's really easy to point out the flaws
- 2:08in other people, but at times we need to take
- 2:09a step back and make sure that we are showing
- 2:11up as good as we can. Next, respect is non -negotiable.
- 2:16Correct misnaming, mislabeling in the moment
- 2:18and back others up. Meet a story about her boss
- 2:22who kept calling her the wrong name. Literally
- 2:25was making me cringe as she told the story. Having
- 2:27somebody who was so disrespectful that they couldn't
- 2:29call you the right name for months. This wasn't
- 2:31one time. It was for months. He knew her name
- 2:33and chose not to use it. That is just. mortifying
- 2:37to hear that she had to go through that. And
- 2:39what I think is equally as disturbing is nobody
- 2:42else around her stood up for her. So if you see
- 2:45something, say something. It's bad enough that
- 2:47that behavior was going on, but the fact that
- 2:49nobody else had her back and said, Hey, you probably
- 2:53should stop calling her this is just baffling
- 2:56to me and you know sometimes it can be a name
- 2:58that someone's using and I go back to times especially
- 3:01when you're younger in your career you might
- 3:03be labeled the marketing girl or the intern and
- 3:06some of those things are just not being respected
- 3:09so if this is happening you need to have the
- 3:12action item of sticking up for yourself and as
- 3:14I mentioned also sticking up for other people
- 3:17if you see something say something whether it's
- 3:19to you or to someone else on your your team.
- 3:22Next up, you can't outwork a bully. Meeta talked
- 3:25about how she was driven by fear. She had a boss
- 3:28that was just so intense and so demanding. And
- 3:30so she worked really, really hard and really,
- 3:33really long because she just tried to stay out
- 3:35of her way and under the radar. But eventually
- 3:37that's not sustainable. So she became disengaged
- 3:40and became not a great employee. So if you're
- 3:43in this situation, you really do need to figure
- 3:45out how you can get help. Sometimes that requires
- 3:47documenting, getting allies, and maybe it's choosing.
- 3:51Do you escalate it? Do you go past that person
- 3:53to someone else? Do you try to get a different
- 3:55role within the organization? Or do you have
- 3:58to work on your exit plan? No matter what your
- 4:01situation is, if you're being disrespected or
- 4:03you're being bullied by your boss, you definitely
- 4:05have to do something about that. That's not a
- 4:07situation that you can stay in in a toxic environment.
- 4:10So as we even discussed in past episodes, it's
- 4:13figuring out how do you get out of that situation?
- 4:15Is it transferring to another department? Is
- 4:17it going around that person, which you have to
- 4:19be very, very careful if that's your choice,
- 4:21to be able to escalate it, or maybe it's time
- 4:24to see if you're able to move on. Next is re
- 4:27-engage the disengaged. Now, when Meeta was telling...
- 4:29the story about the napper. It was kind of funny
- 4:31having a boss who was literally falling asleep
- 4:35in meetings is just wild. I can't imagine consistently.
- 4:38I think we probably all can think of a meeting
- 4:41where we've been in where somebody was falling
- 4:42asleep. I definitely have had that happen in
- 4:45the past, but consistently falling asleep, the
- 4:47dude was disengaged, right? And that's not good
- 4:50for culture. It's not good for the environment.
- 4:52And his boss wasn't holding him accountable.
- 4:55And if you're in the situation where somebody
- 4:58is disengaged, maybe they're not actually falling
- 5:00asleep in meetings because that kind of is the
- 5:02extreme. But if you know that there's somebody
- 5:04in your team that's disengaged, you have to have
- 5:07the conversation with them. Sometimes somebody
- 5:09needs to have just that nudge to be able to be
- 5:12honest. Maybe they are very unhappy. Maybe there's
- 5:15something else going on. So first is kind of
- 5:17seeking to understand, is there something going
- 5:19on? Are they having issues in their personal
- 5:20life that need to be dealt with? But maybe they
- 5:22need that permission that this isn't working
- 5:24and it is okay for them to move on. And while
- 5:27this typically needs to come from a manager,
- 5:29it's not a bad thing that if you see somebody
- 5:31on your team that you have a good relationship
- 5:33with, that you do say the same thing to them.
- 5:35Hey, what's going on? I'm just checking in. Are
- 5:37you OK? Is there anything you need help with?
- 5:39Is there anything going on in your personal life
- 5:41that's impacting how you're showing up at work?
- 5:44It's just having somebody feel like they care
- 5:46and also giving them that opportunity to maybe
- 5:49share something that they haven't been comfortable
- 5:51to in the past. So the takeaway here is if you
- 5:54say to someone, hey, I've observed A, B, and
- 5:57C. How are you? What would it take to make you
- 5:59excited to work here again? Then listen and co
- 6:02-plan next steps. It may be getting them re -engaged
- 6:05and it may be time for them to move on. And the
- 6:07last takeaway is if you're dealing with any of
- 6:10these bad bosses that we discussed from the book,
- 6:12if you're stuck, set an expiration date. You're
- 6:15gonna have bad bosses. It's not... if it's when
- 6:18and it's how often. And sometimes you can work
- 6:21through that and sometimes you have to move on.
- 6:24So if that's the case, then figure out how you're
- 6:26going to move on. And this goes back to making
- 6:29sure that you're building up your personal brand,
- 6:31you have a good image and you're getting that
- 6:33exposure. Whether it's inside your company, maybe
- 6:36there's a role that you can move to in a different
- 6:38department, but maybe you need to look elsewhere.
- 6:40So making sure that you have your LinkedIn profile
- 6:43buttons up, that your resume is updated. And
- 6:46today's environment, those are things that you
- 6:47should always be staying on top of. You just
- 6:49never know. But set an expiration. How long are
- 6:52you able to handle this situation and what are
- 6:55you going to do to get out of it? Assuming that
- 6:57your boss isn't going somewhere. Sometimes you
- 6:59get lucky and they do. But if not, you need to
- 7:01have that plan, whether it's finding another
- 7:03job within your company or looking elsewhere.
- 7:07The other thing I thought that was great that
- 7:08you talked about is while this is going on, doesn't
- 7:10feel good, right? You have to start rebuilding
- 7:12your confidence outside of work. So maybe you
- 7:16start doing a running club or maybe you start
- 7:18going to yoga or going to the gym or volunteering
- 7:21but finding things that you like to do that are
- 7:23going to make you feel good because nobody feels
- 7:25good when they're in a bad work environment.
- 7:28all the time. So takeaways from here is schedule
- 7:30one confidence -fueling activity weekly, whether
- 7:33it's writing, volunteering, or coaching a sport,
- 7:36and protect it like it's a meeting. And then
- 7:38the second part is pick that expiration date.
- 7:40Maybe it's six months from now, maybe it's 12
- 7:42months from now, maybe it's only 90 days. But
- 7:45update your resume with specific wins, grow internal
- 7:48and external exposure, and line up some projects
- 7:51that showcase your value. It's inevitable. You're
- 7:54going to have bad bosses. Some you can work with
- 7:56or work around. others, you'll have to decide
- 7:58what your next step is in or out of the organization.
- 8:01But always have a plan and always have self -awareness.
- 8:05No one is perfect, but make sure you aren't taking
- 8:08on the traits of being a bad boss. And if you're
- 8:10not sure, ask the people around you. As always,
