- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to press play, where we're going through the less
- 0:02Speaker 1: than stellar history of video game movies. I'm Drew Shulman,
- 0:05Speaker 1: and with me is my beef cheek bro Jason Wynn. Now,
- 0:08Speaker 1: whether you're watching along or playing along, it's time to
- 0:10Speaker 1: press play. This was a movie. This was a movie. Okay,
- 0:25Speaker 1: you you have made it very clear you're feeling this film,
- 0:29Speaker 1: have I yes, I believe the exact text message was
- 0:34Speaker 1: I'm in the wrong repipts. Now pull up the receipts
- 0:37Speaker 1: because I just love the It was so well said.
- 0:39Speaker 1: It was just well, that was a movie.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Wing Commander nineteen ninety nine. Folks, if you've never heard
- 0:47Speaker 2: of it, there's a reason why. Let's start.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Let's get it out of the way. The question, are
- 0:52Speaker 1: either of us familiar with this movie or this game?
- 0:55Speaker 1: One hundred percent? Not one hundred percent, not totally. I'll
- 0:58Speaker 1: be honest when I later. I so because I had
- 1:00Speaker 1: the rare opportunity to watch one of these films without
- 1:03Speaker 1: knowing the game franchise at all. I went in movie
- 1:06Speaker 1: first and then looked at the game later. Okay, good, Yeah,
- 1:09Speaker 1: I think the I think in my mind, i'm high
- 1:11Speaker 1: misconstrued like Pilot Wings with wing commander somehow.
- 1:15Speaker 2: No, I don't think it's your fault at all, because,
- 1:16Speaker 2: barring we got zero information about this movie, I think
- 1:19Speaker 2: both of us came from a place of no information
- 1:21Speaker 2: other than it is on Wikipedia's list of video movies.
- 1:25Speaker 2: And then you see the poster and it's Matthew Lillard
- 1:28Speaker 2: and Freddi Prince Junior, and you're like, oh, now, new information.
- 1:31Speaker 2: But there it's very top gun like esque. The poster
- 1:36Speaker 2: a military stick.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, well, I can say it's kind of militaryistic,
- 1:41Speaker 1: like it does. It is a war and they are
- 1:43Speaker 1: fighter pilots in it, yes, and like you know, we
- 1:46Speaker 1: does it called lieutenant once in a while, although I
- 1:48Speaker 1: think his rank changes halfway through. Weirdly, there's a discrepancy there.
- 1:52Speaker 1: He's not the wing commander, you know, he isn't he
- 1:56Speaker 1: falls with the wing command or angel, but he himself
- 1:59Speaker 1: is not the commander, the titular character. Anyways, Like I said,
- 2:04Speaker 1: so I went into this movie first watched it. I
- 2:08Speaker 1: think there is a part of me that enjoyed it
- 2:11Speaker 1: only because of how bad it was, and I knew
- 2:12Speaker 1: how much fun we'd have talking about it, So I like,
- 2:15Speaker 1: secretly I was like, oh, this is garbage. This is
- 2:18Speaker 1: garbage one man's trash.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Well that's the thing is, that's the whole conceit of
- 2:23Speaker 2: the show.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Gang.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Like we have given really good reviews towards things like
- 2:30Speaker 2: the Super Mayo Bras movie Street Fighter, notoriously like awful movies,
- 2:36Speaker 2: and I think I've had that attitude because it's like, wow,
- 2:39Speaker 2: what the hell is this? I didn't have this attitude
- 2:42Speaker 2: at all. I was bored out of my Gore Drew, like,
- 2:46Speaker 2: I do this. I have to work Saturdays. Unfortunately, so
- 2:49Speaker 2: I do this on Saturdays when no one else is there,
- 2:51Speaker 2: and it like gives me a break from work. I
- 2:55Speaker 2: wanted to go back to work. I had to finish this.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I also felt like I really like kept pushing
- 3:02Speaker 1: off watching this till like the last minute, Like it
- 3:05Speaker 1: was only just like, yeah, I know, I need to
- 3:06Speaker 1: put some notes in first so that we have all
- 3:08Speaker 1: the documentation so that we can put ourselves together and
- 3:10Speaker 1: be ready for today. So like God, I'll watch it
- 3:12Speaker 1: a day or do before you. And like there's a
- 3:13Speaker 1: part of me that's always like, you know, I could
- 3:15Speaker 1: just watch this on like one of the nights where
- 3:16Speaker 1: I get stone, but like I want to be able
- 3:18Speaker 1: to like take the notes properly and not be like
- 3:20Speaker 1: two lost or confused. Oh god, I was wishing for
- 3:22Speaker 1: a joint halfway through this one, man, this was this
- 3:24Speaker 1: was rough. Yeah, this was rough. So for those of
- 3:28Speaker 1: you who are lucky enough to have not watched this film,
- 3:30Speaker 1: I'm hoping let me give you a brief recap. In
- 3:33Speaker 1: the year twenty six to fifty four, an interstellar war
- 3:36Speaker 1: rages between the Terran Confederation of Earth and the kill
- 3:39Speaker 1: Raffi Empire. The cat like kill Rathi seek the complete
- 3:42Speaker 1: eradication of the human race. Lieutenant Blair and Todd Marshall
- 3:46Speaker 1: are pilots fresh out of training, traveling to their new
- 3:48Speaker 1: posting aboard the Tiger Claw. Here they will deliver a
- 3:52Speaker 1: vital message, and Blair, the son of a war hero
- 3:55Speaker 1: and a woman from the first humans who explore space
- 3:57Speaker 1: known as Pilgrims, will become vital to his people, stopping
- 4:01Speaker 1: an attack of the kill Rothy on Earth itself. Wow,
- 4:05Speaker 1: that sounds like it could be a good movie in
- 4:07Speaker 1: some world where it wasn't this one. We're gonna say
- 4:10Speaker 1: this is a lot, or I'm gonna say it a lot.
- 4:12Speaker 1: This is a star Wars knockoff off the bottom.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Dude, it's a Star Wars knockoff. It's a top gun knockoff.
- 4:18Speaker 2: It's it, but it doesn't hit any of the marks. Yeah,
- 4:23Speaker 2: this is the first time. I'm a big comic book nerd,
- 4:25Speaker 2: and when I watch comic movies, it's full of things
- 4:27Speaker 2: where it's like, ooh, the winds of what Toomb, not
- 4:32Speaker 2: the Holy host of Hoga.
- 4:35Speaker 1: I understood that reference.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Uh, but usually like, because I have some context for that,
- 4:41Speaker 2: I feel bad for the normies that join me watching
- 4:44Speaker 2: these movies. But this is the first time where six
- 4:47Speaker 2: minutes into a movie, I was like, y'all need to
- 4:50Speaker 2: slow down, dude, this is a lot of exposition. It
- 4:55Speaker 2: wasn't even exposition. It was just like throwing words of
- 4:57Speaker 2: their the lexicon of their universe out there with zero context.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Oh yeah, Like there's the opening of this film. Is
- 5:04Speaker 1: this weird? Like what feels like the opening cuts into
- 5:07Speaker 1: a video game almost, which is very apt given the
- 5:09Speaker 1: context of this film, where it kind of just gives
- 5:12Speaker 1: you like, here's everything you need to know from like
- 5:15Speaker 1: the current age to this future space traveling human time,
- 5:20Speaker 1: and now you know enough that you can watch the
- 5:22Speaker 1: movie no, no, it doesn't. I have so many questions,
- 5:27Speaker 1: including some that are plot relevant, that just gets dropped completely.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Before we get into all those details of the film.
- 5:35Speaker 2: I guess I should also recap the video game series
- 5:39Speaker 2: that this adapts from. Please it's pretty much bar for
- 5:42Speaker 2: bar what you just said there, minus the Pilgrims. I
- 5:45Speaker 2: believe Debuting a nineteen ninety Wing Commander is a media franchise,
- 5:49Speaker 2: is how I was described. Sure, we're being generous with that.
- 5:55Speaker 2: It's got like a trading card game, apparently had a
- 5:57Speaker 2: TV show, it has this movie, and that's I'll be honest,
- 6:02Speaker 2: most of what I know about the whole entire thing.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Like usually there's like a lot of information about the
- 6:08Speaker 2: origin or its impact on the video game world. The
- 6:11Speaker 2: last video game that was made for this franchise was
- 6:14Speaker 2: back in two thousand and seven, so unlike the other
- 6:17Speaker 2: video game movies that we have reviewed, it is not
- 6:19Speaker 2: a current ongoing series. Even Double Dragon got a release
- 6:22Speaker 2: like two years ago. Yeah, this one has hard stopped.
- 6:27Speaker 2: But I did get a refresher on what this video
- 6:30Speaker 2: game franchise is. If you are a gamer, if you've
- 6:32Speaker 2: ever seen clips of like Mark Hamill being recorded in
- 6:35Speaker 2: live action and that being part of the video game
- 6:37Speaker 2: that's this series. So it does feature from like I
- 6:40Speaker 2: think three onwards, completely live action cutscenes with some very
- 6:46Speaker 2: famous actors. There's Mark Hamill, John Rees Davies, Malcolm McDowell,
- 6:52Speaker 2: and a few others. In a spinoff as well, which
- 6:55Speaker 2: I also believe featured Doc Brown. I'm blinking on his name.
- 6:59Speaker 2: I guess that's that's what this video game series has
- 7:02Speaker 2: got going for it.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Yeah, the fact that this video game series has live
- 7:06Speaker 1: action cutscenes. And by the way, I found a listing
- 7:09Speaker 1: of every cut scene from the third game, like just
- 7:13Speaker 1: back to back, so you can just watch all the
- 7:14Speaker 1: cut scenes. It's two and a half hours of footage.
- 7:18Speaker 1: That is an hour more than this movie. And genuinely,
- 7:22Speaker 1: despite the fact that this was all like compressed onto
- 7:24Speaker 1: CD ROMs for your computer, so the graphics are like
- 7:27Speaker 1: middling it best, the quality of the effects and costumes
- 7:31Speaker 1: genuinely seem better. Oh shit, So we, in theory, could
- 7:36Speaker 1: have taken the existing cut scenes that featured Mark Hamill
- 7:39Speaker 1: and a bunch of other great actors you've already mentioned,
- 7:42Speaker 1: and that move made that into a movie. But no,
- 7:44Speaker 1: instead we got this.
- 7:48Speaker 2: I will say like, this movie has a lot going
- 7:51Speaker 2: for it. It is the start of a trilogy that
- 7:52Speaker 2: is very near and dear to my heart. It's this
- 7:55Speaker 2: and then two thousand and two Scooby Doo, and then
- 7:58Speaker 2: two thousand and fours Scooby Do You to Monsters Unleash?
- 8:02Speaker 2: And I just really love that for it.
- 8:04Speaker 1: You know, Oh my god. Yes, the fact that this
- 8:08Speaker 1: movie stars Shaggy and fred I believe it's their first
- 8:12Speaker 1: time working together like on a proper film. I just
- 8:15Speaker 1: I love that for them. I love that this is
- 8:16Speaker 1: like a friendship they started and just carried over into
- 8:19Speaker 1: like future films. Yeah, Yeah, that's awesome. Following the Star
- 8:24Speaker 1: Wars beats, we immediately start this movie with Freddy Pridge.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Junior's character Blair has some sort of weird relic end powers.
- 8:34Speaker 1: We learn he can do right space math faster than
- 8:37Speaker 1: an AI apparently, I think is what they explained it as.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Or he could feel electromagnetic fields. At one point they.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Say, so here, so let's let's just let's just breach
- 8:47Speaker 1: this right now. The Pilgrim line. You brought it up
- 8:50Speaker 1: in your in your summary of the games. They are
- 8:52Speaker 1: not in the games. The Pilgrim or movie invented mcguffin,
- 8:59Speaker 1: and it like seems at first that they're gonna be
- 9:02Speaker 1: like a big deal kind of aren't except for the
- 9:06Speaker 1: like finale where it's like, oh, well you're part pilgrim.
- 9:09Speaker 1: You can navigate without a computer, go do this thing
- 9:11Speaker 1: that no one can do because no one's computers fast enough.
- 9:14Speaker 1: So very Luke Skywalker with you have the force, you
- 9:16Speaker 1: can do this no one else can.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Oh, there's this very specific scene that is a yes, yeah.
- 9:23Speaker 1: It gets even worse. But also I do want to
- 9:25Speaker 1: bring up in the beginning here. The reason is there
- 9:27Speaker 1: is a moment where he pulls out his weird cross
- 9:29Speaker 1: thing he wears that people hate because it makes them
- 9:33Speaker 1: think he's a pilgrim, and pilgrims, like I guess after
- 9:35Speaker 1: they you know, saw space and got all of humanity
- 9:39Speaker 1: into space, where like, yeah, but we've seen the rest
- 9:42Speaker 1: of the cosmos and things are bigger than Earth, so
- 9:44Speaker 1: we're better than you now, so we're just gonna leave
- 9:45Speaker 1: and say by And that is that why people? That's
- 9:48Speaker 1: that's what it seems like. They sort of just stopped
- 9:50Speaker 1: helping humanity and went off into their own thing and
- 9:52Speaker 1: now they're all gone. Apparently yeah. But also there's this
- 9:56Speaker 1: weird moment where like it's revealed that his cross has
- 9:58Speaker 1: a weird like extendos spear dagger mode cu mode never
- 10:03Speaker 1: brought up again. It literally it is the like, hmm,
- 10:08Speaker 1: Chekhov's gun. This is a great gun. I'm gonna hold
- 10:10Speaker 1: onto this gun for the rest of the film, and
- 10:11Speaker 1: then never uses the gun. Oh.
- 10:13Speaker 2: He and he gets like vehemently aggressed on because he's
- 10:17Speaker 2: a pilgrim. Like it's not even microaggressions, it's just aggression.
- 10:20Speaker 2: There's just outward racism towards him. The whole time. He
- 10:24Speaker 2: keeps bringing up that he hates being a pilgrim, and
- 10:26Speaker 2: everyone else keeps bringing up that he's a pilgrim, and
- 10:29Speaker 2: it's like, I don't I guess I missed all of
- 10:32Speaker 2: that exposition because I really didn't understand what the big
- 10:35Speaker 2: deal was. It's not like his parents ever come up.
- 10:37Speaker 2: It's not like his mom secretly writes him a letter
- 10:40Speaker 2: that says I love you.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Yeah, Like there's like the end result is we kind
- 10:46Speaker 1: of get to a point where like him being a
- 10:47Speaker 1: pilgrim is kind of what saves the day. But right,
- 10:51Speaker 1: it's just like at a certain point people just stopped
- 10:54Speaker 1: caring about it. Like when it's suggested that he'll go
- 10:57Speaker 1: do this thing, he's a Pilgrim. The other guy who
- 11:00Speaker 1: before were like oh fuck Pilgrims are just like okay,
- 11:02Speaker 1: good luck, don't die please, Like yeah, you're just totally
- 11:06Speaker 1: cool with him now. Because I don't know, time passed apparently,
- 11:10Speaker 1: like like they got to a point where they realized, like, oh,
- 11:13Speaker 1: we can't really resolve Apparently there was more Pilgrim plot
- 11:15Speaker 1: that was dropped, like a spy or something. But sure,
- 11:18Speaker 1: it really feels like they dropped the Pilgrims ubplot, but
- 11:21Speaker 1: not the like overt racism towards them randomly.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Yeah, this movie had a lot of potential, like starting
- 11:28Speaker 2: like yeah from the get go, starting into it no context,
- 11:31Speaker 2: I thought it had potential. Six six or eight minutes
- 11:34Speaker 2: into this movie, I wrote a note that I think
- 11:36Speaker 2: it's really refreshing that this movie starts off Earnest uh
- 11:39Speaker 2: and ends Earnest I have since redacted. I was really stoked.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Drew.
- 11:46Speaker 2: I was like, Wow, they're not They're like taking whatever.
- 11:49Speaker 2: This sci fi nonsense is every like admiral or like
- 11:53Speaker 2: top security officer, whatever the fuck right, like every old
- 11:56Speaker 2: British Guy's what I'm trying to say, uh is super earnest.
- 11:59Speaker 2: In their line deliveries, Matthew Lillard and Freddie Prince Junior
- 12:03Speaker 2: play like these loose cannon young buck fighters fairly well
- 12:08Speaker 2: for what they are. I mean, they're just young, hot
- 12:10Speaker 2: dudes in the nineties, so it's pretty easy for them.
- 12:13Speaker 2: And the first cut scene, to me, it's interesting that
- 12:16Speaker 2: you said it feels a lot like a video game cutscene,
- 12:18Speaker 2: because it felt like that. To me, it felt like
- 12:21Speaker 2: a predecessor to Halo, if I'm being honest, Like, yeah,
- 12:24Speaker 2: a lot of the aesthetic, a lot of the beats
- 12:26Speaker 2: of like all right, sudden military incursion, Slasha emergency.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Here's our intro to the protagonist.
- 12:33Speaker 2: A lot of the aesthetic where it's like these cold
- 12:35Speaker 2: grays and it's like somewhat grounded in Earth technology, but
- 12:40Speaker 2: it doesn't take it to a wacky level of futurism
- 12:43Speaker 2: as it were, right, like, we're still working on analog.
- 12:46Speaker 2: There's some computer screens that are electronic lights and so
- 12:49Speaker 2: and so forth, but not over the top. It had potential.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I saw the vision.
- 12:54Speaker 1: You hit it well. I like that It's this little
- 12:56Speaker 1: quaintness of this generation of film where they showed the future.
- 13:00Speaker 1: But it's just it's the technology they already had in
- 13:03Speaker 1: the nineties, but like doing more things, not looking more advanced,
- 13:06Speaker 1: Like they're still just like steam and pipes and vents
- 13:10Speaker 1: places that seem like a factory. The monitor, like you said,
- 13:14Speaker 1: is still like tube projection, green on black. Like I
- 13:18Speaker 1: think even by ninety nine, which is when this movie
- 13:20Speaker 1: came out, we were like a little bit passed out.
- 13:22Speaker 1: We were into like the windows like XP era, Oh
- 13:25Speaker 1: my goddety nine.
- 13:27Speaker 2: But even then, still Matthew Lillard is closing out his aim.
- 13:33Speaker 1: You've got mail kill Rafi do do? Ohso can we
- 13:38Speaker 1: just like I know it's from a video game, so
- 13:40Speaker 1: I almost like give it a little bit of a pass,
- 13:42Speaker 1: but like, could you think of a more generic villain
- 13:45Speaker 1: name than to kill Raffi? We don't see that, oh dude.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Oh yeah, they were just faceless, not even faceless, like
- 13:56Speaker 2: they were just these like animations. Yeah, for six six
- 14:00Speaker 2: percent of the movie, we just heard them talking the
- 14:04Speaker 2: entire time.
- 14:04Speaker 1: And then we see they are horrible, awful cat suits.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Cat suits.
- 14:09Speaker 2: I thought they were bugs at first, they just gave
- 14:12Speaker 2: off bug energy and again.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Here's one of those moments. Like if you go watch
- 14:15Speaker 1: any of the video game cut scenes with the kill Rothy,
- 14:17Speaker 1: they're like much they're still cheap looking suits, but they're
- 14:21Speaker 1: able to move more. The mouths are animated like they
- 14:24Speaker 1: feel like a step above in quality.
- 14:27Speaker 2: When they came into frame for this movie, I was like, huh.
- 14:35Speaker 2: I was like, ah, so we did have the budget
- 14:37Speaker 2: for that. I was fully expecting to never see them, and.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Honestly, like again to pull the Jaws card. I think
- 14:43Speaker 1: that would have been the better play of just never
- 14:45Speaker 1: seeing them, let them be this faceless enemy spooky.
- 14:49Speaker 2: At the point that we had seen them. I agree
- 14:52Speaker 2: with you either have them from the get go or
- 14:54Speaker 2: never show them at all, because at some point, like
- 14:57Speaker 2: I'm gonna make a comparison to Top Gun here, Top
- 15:00Speaker 2: and Maverick specifically, they're like super faceless enemies. They don't
- 15:03Speaker 2: name a country, they don't name uh. They're all wearing
- 15:06Speaker 2: like their full mask. The enemies in that movie, there's
- 15:10Speaker 2: no identifiers to what nationality they could be because it's
- 15:13Speaker 2: set in like present day. Yeah, but and that felt faceless.
- 15:18Speaker 2: That felt like it literally could have just been any
- 15:20Speaker 2: old schmuck behind that mask like an extra I was
- 15:23Speaker 2: getting twenty five bucks for the day. I fully expected
- 15:26Speaker 2: that to be this case.
- 15:27Speaker 1: I think it would have actually been a like to
- 15:29Speaker 1: the benefit of the film had we not seen them,
- 15:32Speaker 1: because I think in the end they look cheap and
- 15:34Speaker 1: it suddenly makes the scary thing less scary because they're
- 15:37Speaker 1: just like, Oh, they're just like weird cat people. Like
- 15:41Speaker 1: I think it's disappointing. I think even like the first
- 15:43Speaker 1: few times they like when they first board the ship
- 15:45Speaker 1: and they fight, like the first like time we see
- 15:47Speaker 1: them being shot at, it's like they're from behind, so
- 15:50Speaker 1: we never see the face, so I'm thinking, like, oh,
- 15:52Speaker 1: they're covered. They're like you fully can't see what's under
- 15:54Speaker 1: the hood. Yeah, even that would have been better, like
- 15:56Speaker 1: just we don't know what they are. They're in a suit.
- 16:00Speaker 1: At least it could be there there are the Pilgrims. Ooh,
- 16:02Speaker 1: it's a mystery. We don't know, Like it could have
- 16:04Speaker 1: been some level of like mystique to them. But no, no, no,
- 16:07Speaker 1: they're just weird cat things.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Saying that, I thought there was going to be some
- 16:11Speaker 2: kind of turn again with the outward racism towards Pilgrims.
- 16:14Speaker 2: I thought there was gonna be some like crazy plot
- 16:16Speaker 2: twists where it was discovered that the Pilgrims were either
- 16:21Speaker 2: made up or also human and the racism is unnecessary,
- 16:24Speaker 2: or they were the kill raft, and that's what this
- 16:28Speaker 2: whole situation was. I thought about that. It's fifteen minutes
- 16:33Speaker 2: into the movie. Yeah, why did no one else?
- 16:35Speaker 1: Yeah? I think there's a lot of those moments of like, Ooh,
- 16:38Speaker 1: I see a cool line they could follow, and they're
- 16:42Speaker 1: turning seventy five the other direction and running off a cliff. Okay,
- 16:45Speaker 1: never mind, I.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Guess yeah, And I mean, speaking of the lines, the
- 16:49Speaker 2: lines here, I think that's what really makes it boring
- 16:51Speaker 2: is we've said it's a Star Wars knockoff. We said
- 16:53Speaker 2: it's a Top Gun knockoff. Whereas before when we were
- 16:56Speaker 2: watching movies here, if you went back four or five
- 17:00Speaker 2: months ago to Jason watching Double Dragon, I don't think
- 17:03Speaker 2: in a hundred years what I've predicted a bobo. I
- 17:07Speaker 2: don't think or at least the extent of what a
- 17:10Speaker 2: bobo would become, you know what I mean? Yeah, and
- 17:13Speaker 2: just the obscenities I would never predict Mime Hands or
- 17:17Speaker 2: Postal Man Gang Crew. You know, these are these are
- 17:20Speaker 2: exciting nude ideas being thrown at me. Yeah, and I'm
- 17:25Speaker 2: young and I'm naive about the series and where it's
- 17:28Speaker 2: gonna take me. But this, this film series was so
- 17:31Speaker 2: predictable because it's like, all right, so we've got the
- 17:34Speaker 2: young bucks and they've got a chip on their shoulder,
- 17:36Speaker 2: Like Matthew Lillard is the classic.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Loose cannon as it were.
- 17:42Speaker 2: And then Freddy Prince is the most stereotypical protagonist where
- 17:46Speaker 2: he's the son of someone I fought in a war with,
- 17:49Speaker 2: So you've got something to prove, but you're not your
- 17:51Speaker 2: dad at you're at the same time, you've got a
- 17:53Speaker 2: chip on your shoulder, and it's like, fuck me, Like I.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Would have I would have loved to have heard more
- 17:58Speaker 1: about his father, Like I would have loved seen the
- 18:00Speaker 1: angle of the him to live up to his father
- 18:02Speaker 1: while living in the shadow of his mother's mysterious past,
- 18:05Speaker 1: and like like it's like they were so close to
- 18:09Speaker 1: making that a plot point and then just went yeah,
- 18:12Speaker 1: or we don't. Then we have Matthew Lillard's character boink
- 18:17Speaker 1: the pretty girl and then accidentally kill her trying to
- 18:21Speaker 1: show off in space.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's the other thing is, uh, so they're
- 18:25Speaker 2: predictable archetypes that aren't even fully fletched out. So they're
- 18:30Speaker 2: three quarters of something I've seen before. This movie felt
- 18:34Speaker 2: like a long ass like Star Trek episode without any philosophy,
- 18:39Speaker 2: which makes the Star Trek episodes interesting. It's just people
- 18:42Speaker 2: talking to each other really slowly, which might out me
- 18:47Speaker 2: as a dummy. No, but their conversation and dialogue is boring,
- 18:51Speaker 2: you know.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Yeah. The pacing is just very slow and monotonous, and
- 18:54Speaker 1: then once in a while it gets really fast. Yeah.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Yeah, specifically with Matthew Lillard. That guy's got some different energy.
- 19:01Speaker 2: It's wonderful energy, but he's he's a he's a loose cannon.
- 19:04Speaker 2: One of the worst conceits I did. Let's talk about
- 19:07Speaker 2: that scene because you pulled it up. So he gets
- 19:09Speaker 2: up a fling with one of the characters it's whatever,
- 19:13Speaker 2: and they're like partners in space and there she's good
- 19:17Speaker 2: and he's good. And then he does like a hot
- 19:19Speaker 2: shot move in combat, in the middle of combat, not
- 19:23Speaker 2: just like a simulation, like in combat.
- 19:25Speaker 1: They have completed combat, they've been recalled and he's like,
- 19:29Speaker 1: or we could stay out here and shoot a few
- 19:31Speaker 1: more bad guys, just.
- 19:32Speaker 2: The two of us because it's fun, right, And then
- 19:34Speaker 2: he has a bunch of misogynistic lines where he's like
- 19:37Speaker 2: a real woman does have the nuts. Oh yeah, the
- 19:40Speaker 2: misogyny to complete, to complete, it's crazy.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Oh.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Freddie French Junior says, come on, girl, wake up, Come
- 19:48Speaker 2: on girl, like he's talking to like he's talking to
- 19:51Speaker 2: like a dog. Get up girl, come on. Yeah, but
- 19:56Speaker 2: he says a misogynistic line. He does move and then
- 19:59Speaker 2: it bumps pieces into her ship. He kills her. He's
- 20:02Speaker 2: the reason she dies. Let's let's definitely be transparent about that.
- 20:07Speaker 2: The one person of color in this movie, by the way,
- 20:09Speaker 2: I just realized that. And then later on Freddy Prince
- 20:13Speaker 2: is like, Hey, you're my best bud, and I just
- 20:16Speaker 2: want you to know that's not your fault.
- 20:18Speaker 1: She knew what she signed up for, bro, did she? I?
- 20:24Speaker 2: She? I think that's one hundred percent your fallowmie, Like
- 20:28Speaker 2: she didn't sign up for a recluse cannon.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Yeah, like no, like friendly fire, like I can definitely
- 20:34Speaker 1: see the angle of like she chose to stay out
- 20:36Speaker 1: there with you and disobey orders, but like you still
- 20:40Speaker 1: like egged her on and pushed her into doing a
- 20:43Speaker 1: thing that ultimately got her killed.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Bro Freddy, Prince Junior and Matthy literally like the most
- 20:48Speaker 2: toxic bros Ever because it's the equivalent of like being like, dude,
- 20:52Speaker 2: I don't don't be sad, Like she knew what she
- 20:55Speaker 2: signed up for. You're a cheater, and she knew that
- 20:58Speaker 2: going into it, and then and then when you cheated
- 21:01Speaker 2: on her, I mean, that's just who you are, homie,
- 21:03Speaker 2: Like I love you that way. That's on her.
- 21:05Speaker 1: That is such an accurate depicture of the two of them,
- 21:07Speaker 1: and I hate it because like I always kind of
- 21:09Speaker 1: love their chumminess, but like, yeah, moments like that are
- 21:11Speaker 1: like toxic. Yeah yeah I was, But I will say
- 21:14Speaker 1: I will you know, I'm gonna take a rare moment here.
- 21:16Speaker 1: I'm I'm gonna blow the dust off this film and
- 21:19Speaker 1: go like, look, look, there's a good spot. The fact
- 21:21Speaker 1: they didn't cheap out her death. They didn't do like
- 21:24Speaker 1: a right like I was expecting them to, like the
- 21:26Speaker 1: whole thing where they're like, oh, we're not gonna go
- 21:28Speaker 1: even check if she's like we're gonna dump the ship
- 21:30Speaker 1: off the side of the runway, which is like okay,
- 21:34Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I'm sure the ship is salvageable. There's still
- 21:37Speaker 1: equipment and parts. Like we're in war. We could, you know,
- 21:42Speaker 1: go out there. I'm sure like that truck could just
- 21:44Speaker 1: push it three feet the other way into the whatever airlock.
- 21:47Speaker 1: But okay whatever. I was expecting to turn around, and
- 21:50Speaker 1: she's like, oh, I ejected the last second and I
- 21:52Speaker 1: landed inside, and I had the little cry babies about me,
- 21:55Speaker 1: like I was really expecting to, like, well, we're not
- 21:58Speaker 1: gonna kill the only block character. Never mind.
- 22:03Speaker 2: That is so funny though, because the comedic timing of
- 22:06Speaker 2: like like the maybe the best acted scene in this
- 22:09Speaker 2: movie featuring the death of a character who is beloved
- 22:14Speaker 2: by the character I loved her, but beloved by the
- 22:17Speaker 2: character is up for debate. He's Matthew Lillard is acting
- 22:20Speaker 2: his heart out. He goes no, no, and then they're like,
- 22:25Speaker 2: so could you clean that up? Could you could you
- 22:29Speaker 2: get that burning wreckage off my ship?
- 22:31Speaker 1: Please? Burning wreckage? And like some carcass, there's a little
- 22:35Speaker 1: bit of there.
- 22:36Speaker 2: I'm sure they cut to like a forklift that leaves
- 22:40Speaker 2: it's like a cgi forkliff.
- 22:42Speaker 1: It's so slow. It's also like it's such a thing
- 22:45Speaker 1: you didn't need to show us, like you could have
- 22:47Speaker 1: just so like honestly like a far outside of the
- 22:49Speaker 1: ship with a bit of like scrap falling off it,
- 22:51Speaker 1: but like showing us this like presumably automated vehicle. If
- 22:55Speaker 1: there's a driver that I felt really bad.
- 22:58Speaker 3: Oh my god.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Oh the driver he's got a cigarette in his hand.
- 23:01Speaker 2: He's like, I love my job. Because it cuts to
- 23:05Speaker 2: the Forkliff, that's really bad CG. And then it cuts
- 23:08Speaker 2: back to Matthew Lillard and he's like.
- 23:10Speaker 1: What's that, bro? You know what that is? It's such
- 23:14Speaker 1: an amazing because again, like I agree, I think this
- 23:16Speaker 1: is probably one of the better scenes in the film
- 23:18Speaker 1: is Lillard's acting here, the fact that it's an actual
- 23:21Speaker 1: like there's repercussions to you being a hot shot jackass.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Like I feel like another movie might just do like
- 23:27Speaker 1: an injury or the ship that her ship was lost,
- 23:31Speaker 1: but like they full on kill her and show that
- 23:33Speaker 1: like we're at war. We don't have time for like
- 23:37Speaker 1: double checking and like dotting all the eyes and crossing
- 23:40Speaker 1: all the t's like shit is happening live, Like it
- 23:43Speaker 1: sets a bit of like tenseness to the scene. But Nobe,
- 23:46Speaker 1: you have the silliness of the forklift, the fact that
- 23:49Speaker 1: no one else is really in on the acting except
- 23:51Speaker 1: for uh Freddy and the Matthew But like, yeah, like
- 23:56Speaker 1: it shows like there was there were good pieces here.
- 23:59Speaker 1: The blocks exist.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Oh, the blocks totally exists. I totally agree with you.
- 24:03Speaker 2: By the way, it's not played for comedy in movie.
- 24:06Speaker 2: We're just dissecting it because oh no, it.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Has played so serious, pushing someone's remember the park Clift,
- 24:14Speaker 1: And I was like, I have to talk about this.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Oh my god, no, it's it's in a lot of ways,
- 24:18Speaker 2: and I want to like find out the timeline of
- 24:20Speaker 2: this because I feel like Halo must have come out
- 24:22Speaker 2: in like one or two Halo one on the.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Xbox think about then yeah.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, because this has a lot of bones in
- 24:30Speaker 2: it because in that video game series, if it were
- 24:33Speaker 2: if it were this, they would have killed one of
- 24:35Speaker 2: the admirals, like the old guys who were probably racist
- 24:39Speaker 2: towards Freddy, but then like found some camaraderie in him
- 24:42Speaker 2: or whatever, right, which is also played out trope, but
- 24:45Speaker 2: it doesn't hit as hard because it's like, oh yeah,
- 24:47Speaker 2: tired old white guy sacrifice maybe father figure. Even if
- 24:50Speaker 2: we want to go into uh like old myths and
- 24:52Speaker 2: stuff like that. But for a young person and someone
- 24:56Speaker 2: who is romantically tied to one of the hot shots,
- 24:59Speaker 2: that does hit hard. And I could see this being
- 25:01Speaker 2: like a sprawling saga, this space opera that we've seen
- 25:06Speaker 2: others do with its own identity, but in this move,
- 25:10Speaker 2: because let's also talk about this, Rosie dying is Goose
- 25:13Speaker 2: dying in Top Gun. Yeah one, that's literally all it is, like,
- 25:17Speaker 2: it's it's I'm not gonna downplay it because it's that
- 25:21Speaker 2: one was like his best friend. This one was like
- 25:25Speaker 2: the love interest of the best friend. So even in
- 25:28Speaker 2: Top Gun it's done better.
- 25:29Speaker 1: It's one of those like filmy things you hear about
- 25:32Speaker 1: we talk about like the film industry, and it's that
- 25:34Speaker 1: whole like four quadrant thing where it's like you're trying
- 25:36Speaker 1: to appeal to as many people as possible. Oh right, yeah,
- 25:39Speaker 1: And I think that's kind of like what we're seeing
- 25:42Speaker 1: in the characters is like there's these great building blocks.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Because they're trying to fit too many things into one person,
- 25:48Speaker 1: they can only really be the surface level variants of
- 25:51Speaker 1: all those things, Like right, Freddy Prince Junor's character can
- 25:54Speaker 1: be the handsome he can be the loner, he can
- 25:58Speaker 1: be the Ace pilot. He can be kind of swave
- 26:02Speaker 1: and like flirty with the actual Wing commander Angel. Is
- 26:05Speaker 1: he swab the is he He isn't, but they play
- 26:10Speaker 1: up that he is so that we believe it because
- 26:13Speaker 1: he gets the girl in the end.
- 26:15Speaker 2: He gets the girl on the end. I was just
- 26:17Speaker 2: thinking about that because I was like, the very first
- 26:18Speaker 2: time I see those two guys on screen, I'm like, man,
- 26:21Speaker 2: they're so young.
- 26:22Speaker 1: And thin, oh freaking handsome as some type boys.
- 26:30Speaker 2: We like some type boys around here.
- 26:32Speaker 1: This movie gets our type boys seal of approval.
- 26:34Speaker 2: It's another ranking on top of you got some type
- 26:38Speaker 2: boys walking around.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Also. I also love again that the fact this movie
- 26:42Speaker 1: does have to do the trope of like we need
- 26:43Speaker 1: the two bros, like virtually not escaped this yet every
- 26:48Speaker 1: video game movie has the like it could be a protagonist,
- 26:52Speaker 1: but we have to have too some made sense double
- 26:55Speaker 1: Dragon Mario, others you kind of could have had just
- 26:59Speaker 1: the one star didn't need to or like Street Fighters
- 27:02Speaker 1: attempted at having like six.
- 27:05Speaker 2: Right, yeah, this is the two bros Japs, right, Yeah,
- 27:08Speaker 2: it's it seems that Matthew Lillar is the jovial one,
- 27:12Speaker 2: and there's like there's this protagonist vibe about Freddie Prince.
- 27:16Speaker 2: But as I think about it now, he was just
- 27:18Speaker 2: kind of sad and being racist on that was.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Being racially discriminated against. Basically, yeah, no, like he really
- 27:28Speaker 1: doesn't do anything, like even in the fights we see
- 27:31Speaker 1: like he's not particularly great. He has that weird I
- 27:35Speaker 1: Save the Day moment at the beginning of the movie
- 27:37Speaker 1: when they're like nav computers being a shithead and then
- 27:41Speaker 1: take advantage of that pilgrim skills the what is the
- 27:44Speaker 1: line about, like faith or something? Yeah, so I wrote
- 27:47Speaker 1: it down, So this is egregious.
- 27:49Speaker 2: There's a point where they pull out an obi wan
- 27:51Speaker 2: out of thin air, the guy who's been with them
- 27:53Speaker 2: since day one, the the hobo like captain, turns out
- 27:57Speaker 2: to be the best pilot ever. That went a wall. Again,
- 28:00Speaker 2: that shocking. I think that's in Treasure Island or something.
- 28:03Speaker 1: I think that's in like seventeen different movies, but before
- 28:05Speaker 1: we have I think it's the fact that one he
- 28:09Speaker 1: is like a nobody. Why is he shepherding these two
- 28:12Speaker 1: pilots to their next destination? Like why is he the
- 28:15Speaker 1: one made to do this? Do they not have ships.
- 28:18Speaker 1: They can be using themselves because they are I don't know,
- 28:20Speaker 1: ace fucking pilots. Is there not some sort of regular
- 28:23Speaker 1: transport system, Like you're telling me every single guy out
- 28:27Speaker 1: of like every single pilot out of this academy has
- 28:30Speaker 1: to get like hitchhiker cross space to get to their
- 28:32Speaker 1: destination in the army.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Well, it's because they're racist towards pilgrims.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Oh right, yeah, this was a racism is they were
- 28:41Speaker 1: doing racism. They were doing the racism.
- 28:47Speaker 2: I found the quote, by the way, the exact quote
- 28:50Speaker 2: that is just and I and by the way, I
- 28:52Speaker 2: understand to say that it egregiously ripped off Star Wars
- 28:55Speaker 2: is egregious in itself because Star Wars is ripped off
- 28:58Speaker 2: of other things. That's how bad this is. I just
- 29:00Speaker 2: want people to listeners to realize that's how blaringly obvious
- 29:04Speaker 2: it is. We've got a young man in an orange
- 29:07Speaker 2: jumpsuit who is a pilot and this these are the lines.
- 29:10Speaker 1: I don't think I have the faith.
- 29:12Speaker 2: It's not faith, it's genetics.
- 29:20Speaker 4: Because.
- 29:23Speaker 2: That's so defaultly he has the force.
- 29:27Speaker 1: But is it faith or genetics? What's the question.
- 29:30Speaker 5: But in this movie, they're just like I actually think
- 29:33Speaker 5: this is so funny because the theme is about faith, right,
- 29:37Speaker 5: Like do you believe in something and is the outcome
- 29:41Speaker 5: because of your faith?
- 29:42Speaker 2: Or is the outcome because of raw skill and where?
- 29:45Speaker 2: And that's the whole point of faith, is that you
- 29:46Speaker 2: believe without evidence.
- 29:48Speaker 1: But in the.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Movie they shoot it down, They shoot down the whole
- 29:53Speaker 2: thematics of that. It's just eugenics.
- 29:55Speaker 1: It's it's just eugenics. This is little Your mom was
- 30:01Speaker 1: part of a group of humans who became in touch
- 30:04Speaker 1: with space somehow, and she passed that on to you.
- 30:08Speaker 1: So literally, nepotism says you are magical space boy.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Yeah, and then your dad happened to be a war
- 30:15Speaker 2: hero and probably got you the position that you're in.
- 30:17Speaker 2: I know he's dead, but I mean everyone knows him.
- 30:20Speaker 2: Everyone gave you the reputation. So is it faith or
- 30:23Speaker 2: is it nepo?
- 30:23Speaker 1: Baby? You know?
- 30:24Speaker 2: Like that's really.
- 30:26Speaker 1: That's that's the next song. That's the next song, Paradi
- 30:28Speaker 1: I want to hear. Is is it faith or is
- 30:30Speaker 1: it nepotism? And then again like we like get to
- 30:35Speaker 1: this poem to where we've had this one shitty naval officer,
- 30:37Speaker 1: this like second and command guy who has like shot
- 30:40Speaker 1: down anything pilgrimy or related to the other hobo who
- 30:45Speaker 1: we learned, like I said, is Palette in this amazing
- 30:48Speaker 1: space pilot who's like gone a wall, who's also it
- 30:51Speaker 1: turns out, a Pilgrim, which I thought was implied in
- 30:54Speaker 1: like the first fucking scene of the movie. But then
- 30:56Speaker 1: when he reveals at to Freddy Prince Junior by giving
- 30:58Speaker 1: him his cross, it's like, what, Like.
- 31:03Speaker 2: He did have a line where he's like, where did
- 31:05Speaker 2: you think this came from? It's like, no, we know.
- 31:08Speaker 1: It's like, this is hoo, this is not a surprise,
- 31:10Speaker 1: this is this is a character development. The only character
- 31:13Speaker 1: flpment you have is that you are also into the
- 31:15Speaker 1: pilgrim shit and surprise used to be an amazing officer
- 31:20Speaker 1: And if you were going to an officer, how does
- 31:22Speaker 1: nobody fucking recognize him? That's what I was about to say.
- 31:25Speaker 2: And also it's not even if I've even if I
- 31:28Speaker 2: had forgotten that he was a Pilgrim from the start
- 31:30Speaker 2: of the movie, which I'm not saying that I just did,
- 31:32Speaker 2: just brought it back up. He's a hope and everyone
- 31:36Speaker 2: hates him. That kind of screams Pilgrim in this In
- 31:40Speaker 2: this movie, everyone fucking hats Pilgrims and they specifically hate him. Yeah,
- 31:44Speaker 2: any opinion he has, he'll be like I saw them,
- 31:47Speaker 2: like in person, I saw the bad guy's right up here.
- 31:50Speaker 1: I'm telling you, this is what you have to do.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Shut up, you stop, you stupid space rat, get out
- 31:55Speaker 1: of here. But then yeah, so this so the shitty
- 31:58Speaker 1: officer who's like been a jerk this whole movie to
- 32:00Speaker 1: both Freddy's character and this hobo dude, just like in
- 32:05Speaker 1: the last like third of the film, just stops having
- 32:08Speaker 1: opinions about Pilgrims, stops disliking the hobo dude, and like
- 32:13Speaker 1: again he revealed to the rest of the like flight
- 32:15Speaker 1: crew during their flight that, oh, secretly I am this
- 32:18Speaker 1: ex super good pilot did. Like they just disseminated informations
- 32:22Speaker 1: back to the pilot and he's like, oh, he's a
- 32:24Speaker 1: military dude. Now I'm totally cool with him. Now, oh
- 32:27Speaker 1: he likes Pilgrims. Pilgrims a okay with me? Just like
- 32:30Speaker 1: the ally shirt immediately purchased.
- 32:34Speaker 2: When a mega guy puts out like an lgbtq F.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Yes, yes, that's exactly what this guy.
- 32:40Speaker 2: Is and I should be applauding that, like in real
- 32:42Speaker 2: life if that ever happens. But there's a point where
- 32:44Speaker 2: you're kind of like, this guy is a bandwagon. Oh yeah,
- 32:47Speaker 2: don't want at all.
- 32:48Speaker 1: If anybody wants to jump on the bandwagon and ditch
- 32:51Speaker 1: you know, being a jerk for being an ally great,
- 32:53Speaker 1: you're still a dude.
- 32:57Speaker 2: This is the first time we've really dissected the plot.
- 33:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I like most like kind of just like graze
- 33:03Speaker 1: through it and talk about like the fun bits and
- 33:04Speaker 1: the bad bits and compared to the game, but this
- 33:06Speaker 1: has just got so much to shit on.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Yeah, and there's no fun bits. There's no bad bits
- 33:11Speaker 2: to talk about.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Like I said, the Rosie's death was a weird like
- 33:16Speaker 1: diamond in the rough for the movie, Like it doesn't
- 33:19Speaker 1: really you know, like do much to fix it. But
- 33:21Speaker 1: it was a I was, from a filmmaking standpoint, surprised
- 33:24Speaker 1: they let it happen the way it did. Although I
- 33:26Speaker 1: can imagine the actress being like, oh, I can stop
- 33:28Speaker 1: being in this movie now, sweet bye and left and
- 33:32Speaker 1: they were like no.
- 33:35Speaker 2: The other thing I will say I'll give them props
- 33:37Speaker 2: for is the end of the movie climax happens. We're
- 33:40Speaker 2: skipping over all of this. I'll be honest. I also
- 33:42Speaker 2: tuned out. I have this tendency where I do tune
- 33:44Speaker 2: out towards the climax because nothing truly happens.
- 33:48Speaker 1: This movie's not different.
- 33:49Speaker 2: I didn't like Earth was in trouble. I guess like
- 33:53Speaker 2: the Clinttars or whatever the fuck they're called got to Earth,
- 33:56Speaker 2: but then it was fine.
- 33:58Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure I like rewound at some point to
- 34:01Speaker 1: like rewatch a bit, because I was like, I don't
- 34:03Speaker 1: understand even the premise from the beginning of like, Okay,
- 34:07Speaker 1: so they stole some technology to let them figure out
- 34:09Speaker 1: where Earth was, because you need to use what apparently
- 34:13Speaker 1: I thought were two separate things was jump points and
- 34:17Speaker 1: then black holes and quasars, But I'm thinking they're the
- 34:20Speaker 1: same thing, and it's just that they're mapped out so
- 34:22Speaker 1: they know which ones go where, and they can use
- 34:25Speaker 1: these to travel faster. But somehow it would still take
- 34:28Speaker 1: them two hours longer to get to Earth than the
- 34:30Speaker 1: kill Rathi would with the technology. So they need to
- 34:33Speaker 1: somehow get a message to Earth faster than they can
- 34:36Speaker 1: get to Earth. But they can't send messages without giving
- 34:39Speaker 1: into somebody in like a disc so like, I don't
- 34:42Speaker 1: understand how this all works out, with the exception of
- 34:45Speaker 1: because he's a pilgrim and he can do things faster
- 34:48Speaker 1: than the computer. He can find a shortcut and get
- 34:50Speaker 1: to Earth quicker. Oh shit, like that is what I think.
- 34:54Speaker 1: But again, if that wasn't the plan, because no one
- 34:57Speaker 1: believed in pilgrims up until thirty seconds ago, what what's
- 35:00Speaker 1: the fucking plan?
- 35:02Speaker 2: There was no plan, there was no plan for this
- 35:04Speaker 2: movie wouldn't follow it. So at one point, Angel, the
- 35:08Speaker 2: wing commander, who's also synopsis for her archetype. She's the
- 35:12Speaker 2: woman in the military who's a stickler. She's she's by
- 35:16Speaker 2: the books, and she doesn't like the young buck loose cannon.
- 35:19Speaker 2: That's that's that's it, you know it?
- 35:21Speaker 1: Uh?
- 35:22Speaker 2: They She disappears, I guess, and has a fake deaf scene,
- 35:25Speaker 2: but then comes back and so classically we mentioned he
- 35:28Speaker 2: gets he gets the girl. Uh Freddy Prince Junior and
- 35:32Speaker 2: I found out two things about Angel in that scene.
- 35:34Speaker 2: One she's got a sub kink, which is not actually
- 35:37Speaker 2: that surprising because she says something like he oh, this
- 35:42Speaker 2: is when Freddy Prince Junior is like shaking her and
- 35:44Speaker 2: yelling at her and he's like, come on girl. Get
- 35:47Speaker 2: that was the energy had where he was like, come
- 35:49Speaker 2: on girl. And then she wakes up and then she's
- 35:53Speaker 2: like she hears it, and she's like, was that in order?
- 35:56Speaker 2: And he's like, yeah, sure it is.
- 35:59Speaker 1: It's playing a joke she's made twice before where she's like, oh,
- 36:03Speaker 1: was I making a suggestion? No, it was an order.
- 36:05Speaker 1: So it's oh, it's him turning around on her, which
- 36:08Speaker 1: I think is almost shittier than like the domb thing,
- 36:10Speaker 1: Like I think I would prefer him being dominant her
- 36:12Speaker 1: being a submissive versus yeah, yeah, like it's taking her joke.
- 36:16Speaker 2: I have this theory that anyone who is fairly dominant
- 36:19Speaker 2: in their regular life is pretty submissive in their bedroom life.
- 36:23Speaker 1: I can believe that.
- 36:24Speaker 2: That's so that's a theory. Uh comment down below or podcasts?
- 36:28Speaker 2: Have me on your podcast, I don't know whatever. So
- 36:32Speaker 2: I found out she's got a sub kan too. She's
- 36:34Speaker 2: a really bad kisser or Freddy Prince Junior is a
- 36:36Speaker 2: really bad kisser.
- 36:37Speaker 1: That kiss scene was weird. Yeah, it was.
- 36:39Speaker 2: It was off, Like I was like, oh, yeah, yes,
- 36:42Speaker 2: I think they're both virgins. I'm not gonna lie to
- 36:46Speaker 2: this movie.
- 36:46Speaker 1: Ends on. I guess the victory. Were kind of left
- 36:50Speaker 1: in the dark with a lot of things like, I
- 36:52Speaker 1: don't know what's happening.
- 36:54Speaker 2: Who's got the victory? Because I felt like a loser.
- 36:56Speaker 1: All right, Wait, we lose for having watched the film.
- 37:00Speaker 1: They won for I don't know Earth, I guess, and
- 37:04Speaker 1: I guess they ended space racism potentially spacism.
- 37:11Speaker 2: Didn't they because the one person of color died.
- 37:13Speaker 1: Oh shit, you're right. They made it okay to be
- 37:17Speaker 1: a pilgrim people of color.
- 37:19Speaker 2: Maybe you're a white pilgrim.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Yes, that's what we need. We need more movies that
- 37:25Speaker 1: tell people that Pilgrims were not wrong. That's the message
- 37:29Speaker 1: they want you to take home. The Pilgrims, thanksgiving all
- 37:32Speaker 1: that bullshit. They were the good guys.
- 37:35Speaker 2: This is coming from two North Americans. God, we love it.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Yeah, confusing fucking movie, lots of low points.
- 37:44Speaker 2: I'm super scared that this is gonna set the precedent
- 37:47Speaker 2: for a few, like a large chunk of movies. I
- 37:50Speaker 2: want them to be so bad that we have something
- 37:53Speaker 2: to say.
- 37:53Speaker 1: I mean, just for anyone who's following along, we are
- 37:55Speaker 1: going to hit the kind of wave of you a
- 37:57Speaker 1: bowl movies coming up that's gonna be a nightmare and
- 38:01Speaker 1: a half for both of us.
- 38:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know if we're gonna do that as
- 38:04Speaker 2: a patron exclusive or what. Because it's like seven or
- 38:07Speaker 2: eight movies in different timelines. I don't know if we
- 38:11Speaker 2: can handle that much. Yeah.
- 38:12Speaker 1: I think we'll figure out a plan for that, or
- 38:15Speaker 1: an attack plan for that. Maybe pick like one or
- 38:16Speaker 1: two and do like a U A Bowl special. Yeah.
- 38:19Speaker 1: But again, there are some lighter moments coming up. Some
- 38:22Speaker 1: films I'm actually excited to revisit. I'm not excited. It's
- 38:26Speaker 1: like up until Prince of Persia. Man, it's so I'm
- 38:29Speaker 1: I'm I'm a little pumped to get back to Resident Evil.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Even watch those in years, I'm sure they didn't hold up,
- 38:34Speaker 1: but I'm curious see them again. No, you're right, I am.
- 38:37Speaker 2: I am stoked for Doom. Yes, just because it's got
- 38:41Speaker 2: the rock and Carl Urban and that's it. It might
- 38:43Speaker 2: be like this, but I'll have the rock and car Urban.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:47Speaker 4: Uh No.
- 38:48Speaker 1: Like I said, we've got a few coming up that
- 38:49Speaker 1: I'm I'm I'm pseudo excited for whether because I know
- 38:52Speaker 1: they're bad and we'll have a fun time like this,
- 38:55Speaker 1: or because they might actually be better films than I remember.
- 38:57Speaker 1: I'm hoping looking at you, Lyra Cross.
- 39:02Speaker 2: We'll see, we'll see hopefully this is the worst this this.
- 39:06Speaker 1: I'll be curious, see how this affects your rankings, because
- 39:08Speaker 1: like I spent four dollars on this, I'm I'm getting
- 39:14Speaker 1: that back, dude. I will buy you next time I'm
- 39:16Speaker 1: in your next the wood or you're in my neck,
- 39:18Speaker 1: I'll buy you lunch. Or that's an apology.
- 39:20Speaker 2: I had to rent this off the YouTube. No one
- 39:21Speaker 2: else would carry it.
- 39:24Speaker 1: Oh poor YouTube fun fact sections a bit dim this
- 39:33Speaker 1: time around. There ain't much fun about this, I mean
- 39:37Speaker 1: really like. The one that kind of shook me the
- 39:39Speaker 1: most was when I looked up the film and looked
- 39:42Speaker 1: up the directors. I'm always curious, like what else have
- 39:43Speaker 1: you directed? Like do you have a history of movies
- 39:46Speaker 1: I should know about or did you go on to
- 39:47Speaker 1: do something great? And I was very confused. But if
- 39:50Speaker 1: you look up Chris Roberts the director. His previous directorial
- 39:56Speaker 1: projects include Wing Commander, Wing Commander two, Win Commander three,
- 40:00Speaker 1: a bunch of Wing Commander spinoffs. He's the director for
- 40:03Speaker 1: the games Wait what Chris Roberts is the director of
- 40:09Speaker 1: the Wing Commander game franchise. I don't know if that
- 40:12Speaker 1: means like the game overall or specifically the cut scenes
- 40:15Speaker 1: and the live action bits.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Yeah, that's so interesting because that speaks to how some
- 40:21Speaker 2: scenes work really well as like video game cut scenes,
- 40:26Speaker 2: but a lot of scenes don't work out so well
- 40:29Speaker 2: in terms of a movie.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Yeah, Like I will say, I think one of the
- 40:32Speaker 1: things that like looked the nicest in this film because
- 40:34Speaker 1: the space combat, like again, the literally just like the
- 40:38Speaker 1: two ships parked on a sound stage with a fake
- 40:40Speaker 1: background and it's clearly just like a shaky cam near
- 40:43Speaker 1: them was horrible. But like the in cockpit like shooting
- 40:48Speaker 1: felt like a real video game and looked like a
- 40:50Speaker 1: good like nineties PC game. Interesting. Yeah, like we said,
- 40:55Speaker 1: this film really is a takeoff of Wing Commander three
- 40:59Speaker 1: with the addition of the Pilgrims, and like I said before,
- 41:03Speaker 1: there's over an hour more footage and apparently a weird
- 41:08Speaker 1: talking like lion man who's a good guy. Who's a
- 41:10Speaker 1: good guy, so he's is he one of the clean cars?
- 41:14Speaker 1: I don't know if he's the same race or species,
- 41:16Speaker 1: but like we get a moment where like you. First,
- 41:18Speaker 1: I was watching like a gameplay footage and it's like
- 41:20Speaker 1: you're on the ship doing like a point and click adventure,
- 41:23Speaker 1: going around to like talk to different people and get
- 41:25Speaker 1: ready for your next mission. And there's just like a
- 41:28Speaker 1: seven foot tall white lion man who's just like, oh, hey, buddy,
- 41:32Speaker 1: and it's like, Okay, that's a thing.
- 41:35Speaker 2: I guess I'd love it if he was in this film.
- 41:39Speaker 2: He was in the background and he's yeah, he's just
- 41:41Speaker 2: like this big lion dude, and all the aliens are
- 41:43Speaker 2: like also lion dudes, and he's in the background and
- 41:46Speaker 2: he's like, yeah, you dirty pill girl. He's also in
- 41:50Speaker 2: on the space racism.
- 41:51Speaker 1: Oh my god.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Oping just nobody notices that he's a goddamn cling claw
- 41:55Speaker 2: or whatever.
- 41:58Speaker 1: Give seven different names to things. Loving movies he's talking
- 42:02Speaker 1: about I love, Yeah, what do you love? What do
- 42:05Speaker 1: you love? I love the nove.
- 42:09Speaker 2: I found out that Chris Roberts directed the Punisher movie
- 42:13Speaker 2: in two thousand and four.
- 42:14Speaker 1: Oh shit, Honestly, after the Wing commanded discovery, I didn't
- 42:17Speaker 1: go back to look at other shits. You're like, uh,
- 42:20Speaker 1: that's a I mean, that's an interesting I don't like
- 42:24Speaker 1: the Punisher movie. No, I kind of enjoyed that one,
- 42:26Speaker 1: Like I remember liking that one back in the day. Yeah,
- 42:28Speaker 1: I also just need to like again like just need
- 42:31Speaker 1: to drive this point home so hard. But like the
- 42:34Speaker 1: fact that this feels like the most Star Wars ripoff.
- 42:37Speaker 1: And again, Nope, this is coming out in ninety nine,
- 42:40Speaker 1: this is within the same few months we have the
- 42:43Speaker 1: Matrix and we have episode one. I was about to say,
- 42:47Speaker 1: tim Star Wars come out so and like, I look
- 42:50Speaker 1: back at Star Wars Episode one and yes, all the
- 42:52Speaker 1: shit it deserves, but at least I feel like it
- 42:55Speaker 1: was cohesive and like we had we had yeah, quote
- 43:00Speaker 1: like could you just picture the space fights we had
- 43:03Speaker 1: in this film versus pod racing? And one of those
- 43:07Speaker 1: looked good, the other one looked like people in cardboard
- 43:10Speaker 1: boxes on a sound stage.
- 43:13Speaker 2: Isn't it crazy that little Annie going hippy? It's like
- 43:17Speaker 2: so much more interesting than any part of this movie.
- 43:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like if people were forced to watch
- 43:23Speaker 1: this before episode one, there'd be no Episode one slander. Yes, baby,
- 43:30Speaker 1: it is such a Star Wars knockoff coming out the
- 43:32Speaker 1: same year as episode one, and the game fucking starred
- 43:36Speaker 1: Luke Scottwalker so I didn't even make the connection. We
- 43:40Speaker 1: kind of went over the other really fun ones, which
- 43:42Speaker 1: was kind of the the better casting the game had,
- 43:45Speaker 1: with obviously Mark Hamill playing the main character, Malcolm McDowell
- 43:50Speaker 1: playing the admiral, and then freakin' Genres Davies Gimli himself
- 43:54Speaker 1: as Paladin. Like all great actors who like could have
- 43:58Speaker 1: been in this film. But I will say, of all
- 44:01Speaker 1: of them, one of them did make a cameo in
- 44:04Speaker 1: this film. Oh really, the onboard computer Merlin that talks
- 44:09Speaker 1: to Blair is Mark Hamill. Oh, I think up. Honestly,
- 44:15Speaker 1: neither did I. I went back and like found a
- 44:16Speaker 1: clip on YouTube afterwards, and I was like, oh, yeah,
- 44:19Speaker 1: now that you say it, even hear it, And if
- 44:21Speaker 1: you go through the credits, it's literally like it's the
- 44:23Speaker 1: you know actor, name character, it's question Mark Merlin.
- 44:27Speaker 6: Oh.
- 44:28Speaker 1: He didn't want to be credited for it, which I
- 44:30Speaker 1: kind of He was like, keep that shit. And last
- 44:34Speaker 1: thing I will share is because it's got common practice.
- 44:36Speaker 1: This point is like apparently Freddie Bridge Junior and Matthew
- 44:39Speaker 1: Lillard read the script together. We're like, oh my god, fuck, yes,
- 44:42Speaker 1: this is amazing. We're on one hundred percent got to set.
- 44:46Speaker 1: We're handed completely new and different scripts and we're like, fuck,
- 44:51Speaker 1: it's got the bones of something in it, does that's
- 44:53Speaker 1: the thing? So again, so it leads me perfectly to
- 44:55Speaker 1: the next segment, is what would you change with with
- 44:57Speaker 1: what bones we have here? Is it salvagible? Oh? For sure,
- 45:02Speaker 1: it's salvageable.
- 45:03Speaker 2: If I had to take a guess, because this is
- 45:05Speaker 2: one of the few franchises where we can't really talk
- 45:07Speaker 2: about is it faithful to the adaptation. We're not too
- 45:09Speaker 2: familiar with it or even got enough information where it's like, I.
- 45:12Speaker 1: Mean, sure, I guess.
- 45:14Speaker 2: But knowing now that it was made by the guy
- 45:17Speaker 2: who was on this, I think he was too methodical
- 45:21Speaker 2: and too precious about his baby. I think it took
- 45:23Speaker 2: itself very, very seriously. I think he needed a ramp
- 45:25Speaker 2: up in action and pacing. And yeah, that sounds like
- 45:29Speaker 2: I don't know, like some people like a slower movie
- 45:31Speaker 2: with more dialogue and more philosophy. There wasn't any fucking philosophy.
- 45:35Speaker 2: The dialogue wasn't good or anything new. So I think
- 45:39Speaker 2: we got to pull more punches with this one, whereas
- 45:42Speaker 2: before I think other ones have been like way too
- 45:44Speaker 2: extreme and tried a lot of new shit. This one
- 45:48Speaker 2: didn't try any new shit, you know what I mean?
- 45:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you're on the right path, Era, and
- 45:53Speaker 1: that's kind of where my brain goes. I feel like
- 45:54Speaker 1: in this realm there's kind of four directions. You can
- 45:57Speaker 1: take a good sci fi franchise, well, four quadrants to
- 46:01Speaker 1: hit there. Oh, there you go. But I mean, like
- 46:04Speaker 1: if I can use like the four I think most
- 46:05Speaker 1: stereotypical sci fi franchises for this, it's Star Wars, which
- 46:09Speaker 1: is kind of the like chosen one hero story, which
- 46:13Speaker 1: I think was what they kind of went for the
- 46:15Speaker 1: most and just didn't do it well. And then the
- 46:18Speaker 1: other three are the Battlestar Galactica or the Star Trek,
- 46:21Speaker 1: where it's more philosophical, more thought provoking, more you know,
- 46:24Speaker 1: tackle the Pilgrims and what does it actually mean? Did
- 46:28Speaker 1: they really leave? Were they right to leave? Was there
- 46:30Speaker 1: a deeper meaning to this? Does being part Pilgrim actually
- 46:33Speaker 1: give you powers in some way? Or is it just
- 46:36Speaker 1: a learned skill. The other option is the Space Western
- 46:39Speaker 1: the Firefly. You can do the funny, but like, underneath
- 46:42Speaker 1: the funny there's little serious moments, but like you need
- 46:45Speaker 1: to balance that well in this film, like it wasn't funny,
- 46:48Speaker 1: even though I think it tried once in a while.
- 46:53Speaker 1: There were some lines that were written in a way
- 46:54Speaker 1: where I could believe they were aiming for comedy and
- 46:57Speaker 1: just miss the mark, versus like they were just avoiding
- 47:00Speaker 1: it altogether. I think even some of the funnier bits
- 47:03Speaker 1: were unintentional, we'll be honest. And then lastly, you could
- 47:07Speaker 1: go the pure comedy route. You could just make this
- 47:11Speaker 1: a like silly space romp and be funny and not
- 47:14Speaker 1: need to take anything seriously. I wouldn't go as far
- 47:16Speaker 1: as space balls, but like in that realm of like,
- 47:19Speaker 1: let's satirize the like seriousness of space battle and make
- 47:22Speaker 1: it more fun and silly. I don't think that's the
- 47:23Speaker 1: way to go this one, but I think we could
- 47:26Speaker 1: have gone really like you could have almost gone harder
- 47:29Speaker 1: on the Star Wars side of things and see where
- 47:33Speaker 1: that takes you with this specific plot and character. Or
- 47:36Speaker 1: you could have gone the much heavier, much more serious
- 47:39Speaker 1: tone that they kind of started to hit around Rosie's
- 47:42Speaker 1: death and then just drop the ball completely.
- 47:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I think going any of those routes. Just having
- 47:47Speaker 2: an identity, you know what, I mean, whereas this one's
- 47:50Speaker 2: identity is to take off of the others, and I
- 47:53Speaker 2: think there is its own identity. I think it was
- 47:55Speaker 2: the predecessor to Halo. It could have been the Halo
- 47:57Speaker 2: before Halo. I see a lot of origins coming from that,
- 48:01Speaker 2: and I think it could have been Halo. Ultimately, isn't
- 48:04Speaker 2: anything new either, if we really want to go into it.
- 48:07Speaker 2: Halo is just every military boy's wet dream with a
- 48:11Speaker 2: touch of sci fi.
- 48:13Speaker 1: You know.
- 48:14Speaker 2: The earlier novels read like like splinter Cell, like Dad
- 48:18Speaker 2: books is how they read. And I really liked that
- 48:20Speaker 2: back when I was a teenager. That's not a new identity,
- 48:24Speaker 2: but it just went hard on it, you know. Yeah,
- 48:27Speaker 2: this one was not good.
- 48:30Speaker 1: Like I'm reminded almost of and pardon my, I've played
- 48:33Speaker 1: all the Halo games. I know so much of the
- 48:35Speaker 1: fucking Lord. I'm having a blank on the game title,
- 48:37Speaker 1: the one where you play as Noble six. We were
- 48:40Speaker 1: like the Spartan squad before Master Chief, and like, ultimately,
- 48:44Speaker 1: it's not a story about them being heroes, it's them
- 48:47Speaker 1: completing a mission to then like give Master Chief Cortana.
- 48:51Speaker 1: That was the big spoilers.
- 48:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that one was Wing Commander three Vengeance.
- 48:58Speaker 1: A bit? Okay, how are you rating this film? Boo?
- 49:04Speaker 2: I don't even have any like references?
- 49:05Speaker 1: I don't.
- 49:06Speaker 2: Ooh, Wing Commander also three Heart of the Tiger Are
- 49:11Speaker 2: they both three? I don't know what happened there, but anyways,
- 49:14Speaker 2: it's bad.
- 49:15Speaker 1: I don't, I don't.
- 49:16Speaker 2: What's up bad? We I'll give it out of a
- 49:20Speaker 2: possible Wing Commander. I'm giving it Wing Commander in nineteen
- 49:23Speaker 2: ninety nine.
- 49:24Speaker 1: It's bad.
- 49:25Speaker 2: It's so bad. Oh, what would you rate this out of? I?
- 49:29Speaker 1: Uh, will give this a Let's push it off the
- 49:33Speaker 1: dock with a forklift. Ooh, that's good.
- 49:36Speaker 2: No, that's better. Yeah, you're getting better at these.
- 49:39Speaker 1: It's fun. It's a fun game. Or on movies creatively? Yeah, no,
- 49:43Speaker 1: this movie, like I think we both put it really well.
- 49:46Speaker 1: It had the structure to maybe be something, and just
- 49:50Speaker 1: it couldn't decide what it wanted to be, and it
- 49:52Speaker 1: became the most bland, generic oatmeal of a movie you
- 49:54Speaker 1: could imagine while being confusing. It's sad and boring.
- 50:03Speaker 2: Today we are joined by Aaron Randolph and Chris Reagan.
- 50:05Speaker 2: As always, we are curious to know if you have
- 50:07Speaker 2: any history or connection to the Wing Commander franchise, either
- 50:10Speaker 2: film or games. Aaron, I think you have the most
- 50:15Speaker 2: history out of all of us.
- 50:16Speaker 1: I believe.
- 50:17Speaker 6: Yeah, that's a strong possibility. Back in nineteen ninety four,
- 50:23Speaker 6: I want to say, oh, I believed. I believed that
- 50:29Speaker 6: FMB games aka full motion video games with live actors
- 50:34Speaker 6: on four, six, or even eight CDs were the future
- 50:38Speaker 6: of gaming. Yeah, you can take a wild guess as
- 50:44Speaker 6: to how wrong I was. But in my defense, I
- 50:48Speaker 6: played two of the best FMB game series back to back,
- 50:53Speaker 6: so that kind of gave me that impression.
- 50:54Speaker 1: So other than Win Commander, what other two games have
- 50:56Speaker 1: you played in this genre?
- 50:58Speaker 6: So I've played so much games over the years, but
- 51:02Speaker 6: the first two I ever played was a Text Murphy
- 51:05Speaker 6: game called The Pandora Directive, which is one of the
- 51:09Speaker 6: It's I believe it's the ninth greatest adventure game of
- 51:12Speaker 6: all time according to Adventure gamers dot Com. It's a
- 51:16Speaker 6: phenomenal point and click first person adventure game, but in
- 51:19Speaker 6: addition to hunting through offices looking for clues, you also
- 51:23Speaker 6: have to talk to people, and the people are played
- 51:25Speaker 6: by live actors, and you, your own character, Tex Murphy,
- 51:28Speaker 6: is also played by a live actor, and they actually
- 51:31Speaker 6: hired actors and and you know, it's it turns out
- 51:36Speaker 6: to be both entertaining and also there's a real game involved.
- 51:39Speaker 6: You have to solve puzzles, you have to find inventory items,
- 51:41Speaker 6: you have to solve logic puzzles, and not just inventory
- 51:44Speaker 6: puzzles of rubbing one thing on another thing.
- 51:46Speaker 1: Oh my god. Those always never made sense to me.
- 51:48Speaker 6: Yeah, well, they they tended to follow a little bit
- 51:51Speaker 6: more logic with the text Murphy Games and the Pandora
- 51:53Speaker 6: Directive was the first one I played in was the
- 51:55Speaker 6: best one they ever made. And then the very next
- 51:57Speaker 6: game I played was Wing Commander three, which was the
- 52:03Speaker 6: one that first did full motion video, and they cast
- 52:06Speaker 6: Mark Hammill as Commander Christopher Blair, the hero of the
- 52:11Speaker 6: series up to this point, and they also had John
- 52:15Speaker 6: Rhys Davies who played Paladin. They had Malcolm McDowell who
- 52:19Speaker 6: played the somewhat sinister but still a good guy Admiral Tolwan,
- 52:24Speaker 6: and they had quite possibly my favorite casting choice, Thomas
- 52:28Speaker 6: Wilson aka the guy who played Biff from Back to
- 52:31Speaker 6: the Future as Maniac the.
- 52:35Speaker 1: The oh I didn't realize that's who he played.
- 52:37Speaker 2: It, Yes, like a much better movie already.
- 52:42Speaker 1: That was I think one of the points I made,
- 52:44Speaker 1: like in our main recording of this episode, was the
- 52:45Speaker 1: fact that, like, I'm pretty sure just the raw footage
- 52:48Speaker 1: from that game would have been a better movie than
- 52:51Speaker 1: this movie turned out to be. And you're telling me
- 52:54Speaker 1: the stars would have been Biff and Luke Skywalker instead
- 52:57Speaker 1: of Lillard, And what am I saying? Lillard, Shaggy and Freddy? Accurate?
- 53:03Speaker 3: Accurate?
- 53:04Speaker 6: And the game was half walking around your starship talking
- 53:07Speaker 6: to the fellow crew members had seen full most video
- 53:10Speaker 6: sequences of two actors chewing the hell out of the scenery.
- 53:14Speaker 1: Uh, but that's like that movie we watched.
- 53:16Speaker 6: Yeah, and then you would get and then you would
- 53:19Speaker 6: get a mission and you'd have to jump into or
- 53:21Speaker 6: you'd watch Mark Hamill jump into a ship, and then
- 53:23Speaker 6: you'd actually fly around and shoot down killerrothy spaceships. And
- 53:28Speaker 6: it was a lot of fun. It was really very good.
- 53:30Speaker 6: It was heavily, heavily inspired by Star Wars.
- 53:33Speaker 1: Yeah. I think that was our biggest takeaway was like,
- 53:35Speaker 1: what a Star Wars? What a relatively Star Wars esque
- 53:39Speaker 1: knockoff we were appreciating, and then the realization later on
- 53:43Speaker 1: that Oh it starred the Star Wars guy initially.
- 53:47Speaker 6: Yep, there's a reason why he cast him.
- 53:50Speaker 3: That one was.
- 53:51Speaker 6: Hugely successful, got a massive following, and they followed it
- 53:53Speaker 6: up with a Wing Commander for the Price of Freedom,
- 53:56Speaker 6: in which they got a twelve million dollar budget. Jesus
- 54:01Speaker 6: and just just shot the be Jesus side of this thing,
- 54:04Speaker 6: like they had live sets instead of blue screens. They
- 54:09Speaker 6: just went completely overboard, spent almost all of the money
- 54:12Speaker 6: on the on the the FMV portion of it, the
- 54:16Speaker 6: gameplay was pretty much more or less identical to Commander three.
- 54:20Speaker 6: So I mean it didn't do as well and it
- 54:24Speaker 6: isn't remembered as fondly. However, the acting.
- 54:27Speaker 1: In it is.
- 54:28Speaker 4: Aw.
- 54:29Speaker 6: Yeah, they're all going for it, particularly Malcolm McDowell as
- 54:34Speaker 6: Tolan acts his ass off in this game.
- 54:37Speaker 1: Oh he's a phenomenal actor. I mean, I get it.
- 54:39Speaker 1: I think that was a thing. Jason. I don't review
- 54:41Speaker 1: ever went back, Jason, but like I know, I went
- 54:42Speaker 1: because I had never played the games. I was like,
- 54:44Speaker 1: let me go, like watch like the first like thirty
- 54:46Speaker 1: minutes of a game and then being like, okay, it's
- 54:48Speaker 1: been thirty minutes. No one's played anything yet. Let's let's
- 54:53Speaker 1: skip ahead a little bit. I think around like the
- 54:54Speaker 1: hour and a half mark, they finally were in a
- 54:56Speaker 1: ship and it looked surprisingly like the movie. I'll give
- 54:59Speaker 1: it that much at least. Oh shoot, but I guess
- 55:02Speaker 1: we also have Chris here, and I need to know, Chris,
- 55:03Speaker 1: what is your history with this franchise, if any at all?
- 55:06Speaker 4: Very little but similar to Aaron Uh, It's it's Wing
- 55:10Speaker 4: Commander three, Heart of the Tiger. Not that I played it.
- 55:15Speaker 4: I am, like I've said many times on various gate
- 55:18Speaker 4: Leapers shows. I'm the youngest of six, so I didn't
- 55:21Speaker 4: do a I didn't do a ton of video game playing.
- 55:24Speaker 4: I did plenty of video game watching growing up, so
- 55:28Speaker 4: I definitely watched my older brothers play this game a lot.
- 55:33Speaker 4: Stared longingly at the at the cool cover. I'm like,
- 55:36Speaker 4: why is there a tiger man? I This lion man
- 55:41Speaker 4: is so cool.
- 55:42Speaker 1: I don't know that after this whole movie where it's
- 55:47Speaker 1: just it's humans versus mysterious aliens that to be catholic.
- 55:51Speaker 1: And then I'm watching this footage of the game, but
- 55:53Speaker 1: like within the first two minutes, like here's my best buddy.
- 55:55Speaker 1: This giant tiger man and I'm.
- 55:56Speaker 4: Like, oh my god, what dude. They did everything in
- 56:01Speaker 4: their power in this movie to not have the the
- 56:05Speaker 4: tiger lion men in the movie.
- 56:08Speaker 6: I was like, come on, I wish they'd done more.
- 56:10Speaker 1: I wish.
- 56:13Speaker 6: The kill rapping in the movie are god awful, and
- 56:16Speaker 6: pretty much anyone who was a fan of the game's thoughts.
- 56:20Speaker 3: So as soon as they saw them, like.
- 56:21Speaker 1: What the are these?
- 56:23Speaker 2: Oh yeah, they kept talking about the bad guy and
- 56:25Speaker 2: they would show like the bad Cjazz ships. It almost
- 56:28Speaker 2: seemed like they were never going to show them. And
- 56:30Speaker 2: then in the back half of the movie they show them.
- 56:32Speaker 2: Then you go, wow, that was brave.
- 56:38Speaker 1: Don't show them?
- 56:39Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe you just kept that out.
- 56:43Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 56:44Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I think we all we all learned the
- 56:45Speaker 1: lessons of Spielberg with Jaws. The show us less trust me.
- 56:49Speaker 4: Yeah, if you're not gonna if you're not gonna go
- 56:51Speaker 4: all out on the giant lion suits and all that
- 56:54Speaker 4: kind of stuff or something, then just then just don't
- 56:58Speaker 4: show them. But I didn't watch the movie until getting
- 57:02Speaker 4: ready for this show, so that's relatively new, and you
- 57:06Speaker 4: know what, Okay, you know it's bad. It was bad,
- 57:11Speaker 4: and that's about all I have about this.
- 57:14Speaker 2: I mean, all the video game movies are bad.
- 57:16Speaker 4: There were things that I liked about the movie in
- 57:19Speaker 4: that it made me want a space like submarine military
- 57:26Speaker 4: movie because like after this movie, like U five seven
- 57:29Speaker 4: one came out very similar but very serious. But it
- 57:32Speaker 4: was just like, hey, that's kind of like a cool
- 57:34Speaker 4: way of thinking about space and that like it's a
- 57:36Speaker 4: little bit more realistic and like I feel like sci
- 57:39Speaker 4: fi now is just every like every space has huge
- 57:41Speaker 4: windows and all this kind of stuff you're looking on
- 57:43Speaker 4: into space when reality it's probably, you know, if we
- 57:46Speaker 4: ever do start traveling around, is probably going to be
- 57:49Speaker 4: very small windows and very very much like the inside
- 57:52Speaker 4: of a submarine. And that's kind of what their sets
- 57:54Speaker 4: look like in this, And I was like, that could
- 57:56Speaker 4: be kind of sick to do like a submarine's style
- 58:00Speaker 4: base ship adventure war movie. But that's not that's not
- 58:04Speaker 4: They kind of did it.
- 58:05Speaker 1: But you know whatever, I will remind me later, I'll
- 58:09Speaker 1: message you I have a recommendation for a movie that
- 58:10Speaker 1: I think you'll actually tackle your fancy for that kind
- 58:12Speaker 1: of Oh okay, but with that, I figure let's move
- 58:16Speaker 1: on to a little game. So unlike our last few games,
- 58:18Speaker 1: I couldn't really make a game all about Wing Commander
- 58:22Speaker 1: as well as I wanted to, not that I think
- 58:24Speaker 1: there is much to go on, So I'm using it
- 58:26Speaker 1: as a jumping off point and doing a little bit
- 58:27Speaker 1: of borrowing from other gate Leaper properties, and we're gonna
- 58:30Speaker 1: do a little bit of a higher lower game. So
- 58:34Speaker 1: to start with, when the game begins, a mass both
- 58:36Speaker 1: of you to guess how big in meters or in feet.
- 58:39Speaker 1: I did the math because I did it all in meters,
- 58:42Speaker 1: and realize that you're all Americans. But I want you
- 58:45Speaker 1: to guess how large the Tiger Clause ship from the
- 58:48Speaker 1: Wing Commander. I'll be honest, I don't know if this
- 58:50Speaker 1: is from the movie or the game measurement. I couldn't
- 58:52Speaker 1: get an accurate one, but I think it's the same.
- 58:54Speaker 1: And then from there we're gonna go higher lower with
- 58:56Speaker 1: different famous sci fi ships, whether they're larger or smaller
- 59:00Speaker 1: unless otherwise stated, they should all be from tip of
- 59:03Speaker 1: the nose to the rear thrusters, so maximum length if possible,
- 59:08Speaker 1: all right space, Yeah, yep, you guys get it.
- 59:20Speaker 2: My personal stats are two inches long four inches wide.
- 59:26Speaker 1: I will ask for your first guesses. No, no worry
- 59:29Speaker 1: about order. Why the perfect cube four by four by four.
- 59:40Speaker 1: If either of you want to go and again, whoever
- 59:42Speaker 1: gets it right you will get a bonus point, and
- 59:44Speaker 1: on top of that, you'll be the one to go
- 59:45Speaker 1: first in our little game here. So whoever gets closest
- 59:48Speaker 1: in that case, uh so, give me a guess. What
- 59:50Speaker 1: do you think the length from tip to taint of
- 59:53Speaker 1: the Tiger claw from wing commander is?
- 59:56Speaker 4: Who goes first?
- 59:58Speaker 1: Just both shouted a guess, and whoever's closest will be
- 59:59Speaker 1: the I want to officially go first? Moving forward? Hmmm,
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: I could just I'm just gonna throw out, oh, and
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: everything's been rounded to a fair like, easy like measurement.
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: Wait, which ship is this again?
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: The Tigers?
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: The Tigers, our main ship from the games, the one
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: that's oh, okay, okay, sorry, twenty.
- 1:00:18Speaker 6: Five feet Yeah, I was gonna say, thinking it's gonna say,
- 1:00:21Speaker 6: good lord, I'm modest garage.
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: I thought we were talking about a different ship. That's
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: my bad, that's my bad, the tigers claw.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: Give me a rough guess. Whoevers closes will start the
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: game off, and then from here it's just high or
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: lower and yes, if you can guess the size of
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: the ship will also give you a bout.
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: For me.
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: You can still guess forty five, but you could go
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: if you say forty five feet, Aaron, you can say
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: forty six and see if you beat them.
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: Shit, I wouldn't do that.
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: Fuck this, I am basing this off of nothing. I'm
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: gonna say. I'm gonna say ten thousand feet tip to taint.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: Okay, ten thousand, Aaron, what are you going for?
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: I'm going for I'm going opposites.
- 1:00:59Speaker 6: I'm gonna I'm going to go with a much more
- 1:01:02Speaker 6: modest seven hundred and fifty feet.
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: Ooh oh, actually need to do some math. Oh wait, no,
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: of mind, you're definitely closer. What am I doing math? Yeah,
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: the tigers Claw is seven hundred meters or twenty three
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: hundred feet. Oh wow, so air closer. Just going with meters,
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: I would have been so nobody was closer with forty
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: five that's the ship. Honestly, you work, so no bonus
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: point there. Neither of you were close enough. But if
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: you want to, we'll start going for the next ones here, Jason,
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: what is our what is our first ship? For them
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: to for Aaron to guess bigger or smaller?
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: The first ship is the us S Enterprise or the
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: NCC one seven oh one. As I was reading that,
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: I was like, is that a stat was I supposed
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: to read that?
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: It's one of those things where I think the Enterprise
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: and Star trek has like there's a few different models,
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: so to be safe, I put a specific one in
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: case someone here is really nerdy knew the difference, or
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: if there was one.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: Yeah, Trekky's shut up, nerds.
- 1:02:02Speaker 6: I'm gonna say I think the Enterprise is larger.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: That would be incorrect. It is actually smaller, incorrect. Do
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: you want to guess how big it's her bonus point?
- 1:02:11Speaker 6: I just remember it being like like seeing like I
- 1:02:15Speaker 6: don't know. It was like I don't want to give
- 1:02:16Speaker 6: away anything that could give a point away, So I'm
- 1:02:18Speaker 6: going to shut.
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: Up if I had to.
- 1:02:22Speaker 6: If it is smaller, like I'm gonna go.
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: I'm gonna go.
- 1:02:25Speaker 6: I'll go fifteen hundred feet.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: Not close enough, it's close. It's not close enough for
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: about this point in my heart, but close.
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: Sure, yeah, yeah, Jason would reveal it it's nine hundred
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: and fifty feet or for everyone else in the world.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: Two hundred ninety meters.
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: I was just looking up this stat By the way,
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: the Tiger Claw is about twice the height of the
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: Empire State Building, damn, making the Enterprise almost as tall
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: as the Empire State Building. I'm just gonna be using
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: the Empire State Building.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: As honestly, it's a good it's a good visual measurement
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: for everyone who's been to the end. Are still it's nice,
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: it's pretty, it's there the tip.
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: Did you went all the way to the tip nice?
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: Or is whatever the lookout they let you go to
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: the friendulum. I just went to the tip. That's all.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: That's all I allowed. I didn't really count, honestly. Yeah, sorry,
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: what were we doing? I was okay? I was like,
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: what are we doing right now? Okay?
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: So, Chris, the next ship that you're going to be
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: comparing the US Enterprise to is the Tartist from Doctor
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: Who Oh much?
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: I mean on the inside. But that's is that what
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: we're I guess I'll say smaller.
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: That is smaller? Yeah, guess how big it is?
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: Good?
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: Six feet?
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: It's ten ft Because it's a small number, I cant
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: would pretty dam accurate for that one.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: You would have to crouch down inside of it, Chris,
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: I crouched on inside of a lot of things.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: Yeah, Aaron, your next one is Discovery one from two
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: thousand ones of space honesty, bigger or smaller than the Tartists?
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: I mean, come on, that's bigger.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: Some of these are free, I'll be honest.
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: The Tartis is a phone booth. Of course it's bigger.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: Child. You have a transfer botus one year. Do you
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: want to give us a guest for how big a
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: Discovery one is? Given that I have an almost zero
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: familiarity with it. You've seen the movie. I couldn't tell
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: what looks like.
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: I'll stick to seven hundred and fifty feet.
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: You're a red double. There, it's a it's a four
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: hundred footer.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: Again in the grand scheme of things. Not too bad?
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: No, again, like we we're hunging like the scale of
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: a space ship. It's pretty damn close.
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: Some of these fucking ships are crazy.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: Oh yeah, no, I had fun with this game. This
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: was a very fun research puzzle.
- 1:04:55Speaker 4: U Kuber couldn't get a bigger ship?
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: Wow? Okay, I got a fun one for you, Chris.
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: So from Discovery one to Spaceball one from Spaceball bigger
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: or smaller than Discovery one.
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: I mean.
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: That's oh, and I will I will in standards in
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: standard ship form, not Mega made, because Mega Made's dimensions
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: don't fucking add up. Good.
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: I was about to give you all of the dimensions
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: for Mega Made, So that's good to know.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: Bigger it is bigger, You got it. Do you want
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: to give me a guest for how much bigger?
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: I'm gonna steal Erran's I guess from the previous round
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: and go seven to fifty.
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: No, way way higher.
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it's thirty six thousand feet.
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: Yeah, damn, that intro goes on forever.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: Yeah, although I wonder, God, that's someone So I didn't
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: look up the exactly potentially, So the measurement given is
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: like from like backscripts and like from like lore and
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: like it's like been whatever revealed for like specs. But
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: like if you actually time that opening sequence with how
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: big it should be to scale, it's actually only like
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: half the size. And then the issue is when it
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: turns the Mega Maid, we have to assume it's still
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: somewhere around that like thirty thousand foot haul. Yet the
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: head is the size of the statue of Liberty's head
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: when it lands on Earth or whatever the planet is
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: at the end of the movie. I don't just mega.
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: Maid's got a beefy body in a little head. That's fine, Okay,
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: leave her alone, Drew.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: I'm trying to work the word head and sucking into
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: the game. There somewhere. I can't find it, way to
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: make it work.
- 1:06:37Speaker 4: It's there, somewhere, we'll find it.
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: Like me, she's mostly head.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: Of my two inch to four. I'm mostly head.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: We're talking about that head?
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: Oh right, right, right, right, right, gotcha.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: This one's interesting. So this is I don't know how
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: to pronounce this one, but the key liner from Dune.
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: Yeah, this one just came up in a lot of
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: lists and I had to look it up. I never,
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: I've never. I'm not a Dune guy. I don't know
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: what it is. Never did for me. Yeah, we got
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: a phone. Audre Andre would know. I'm waiting for her response,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: which he hears this episode go out. She's definitely the
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: resident Dune guy.
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:07:16Speaker 6: I kind of want to go against my intuition here.
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: What's your intuition here?
- 1:07:21Speaker 6: My intuition says it's smaller because Spaseball one goes on forever, right,
- 1:07:25Speaker 6: But dune. I know, things get pretty crazy. Yeah, I'm
- 1:07:29Speaker 6: gonna go against my intuition. I'm gonna say it's actually bigger.
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: Ooh your intuition to go against your intuition is right. Yeh, Damn,
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: it's bigger sixty five thousand feet.
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: Oh, there was my chance for a bonus point. But
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: I wasn't gonna guess.
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: Shhh, sorry, I almost had to Jason, don't worry.
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: Hey, that's too big for ship.
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: I was gonna go with.
- 1:07:53Speaker 6: I was gonna go with fifty thousand feet, so I
- 1:07:55Speaker 6: was gonna be nowhere close anyway. So yeah, I mean,
- 1:07:58Speaker 6: of all the things, but damn, damn, dang.
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a big one.
- 1:08:05Speaker 6: That's thirteen miles or some shit.
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: Jesus, imagine the day we were like, I gotta see
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: the captain for something, and I'm all the way here
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: in the back of the.
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: End of it, because I'll just take a car, just.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: Get out of the ship into another smaller ship to
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: go back to the front porch.
- 1:08:21Speaker 6: I'll start walking. I'll see him in four hours.
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: I hope this is an urgent afrom breaks are so
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: breaks on the way to you. Why do we build
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: the one bathroom only in the middle too, for everyone.
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: This one's an interesting one. Star Trek makes a come back.
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: I guess this is for Chris.
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: Is that right? Yeah?
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: This is the Borg Cube from Star Trek.
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: Hey, I don't know what the fuck that is, so
- 1:08:56Speaker 4: I'm gonna say smaller.
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: Good guess because it is yep.
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: Oh hell yeah.
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: Fun fact about this. Actually we'll give you a chance
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: to guess. But it is the same height, width, and depth.
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: It's a cube. It's a giant cube.
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: It's a cube.
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: Literally has to be the same all the way around.
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: That's fun. This game is showing me that I clearly
- 1:09:17Speaker 4: have no concept of size in any film that's in
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: set in space.
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: I think have that issue.
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: I mean measure t space things.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: My numbers are way up.
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: Cube, where's the tip and where's the tink brother?
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: Wherever you want? Baby.
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: I was going to make a choke earlier when she
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: was like, it's the same with uh length and depth,
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: I was like, that's what my doctor said, big shallow.
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: I'm gonna I'm gonna bring it way down and say
- 1:10:01Speaker 4: five hundred.
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: Feet yes, feet, No, this one's ten thousand, baby.
- 1:10:08Speaker 6: It's much larger than the Enterprise and the Enterprise was
- 1:10:11Speaker 6: like twenty six hundred.
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: So well, damn, here's that. I just don't I just
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: don't like the idea of a cube that big.
- 1:10:21Speaker 6: So no, no one does.
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: Cubes should be small in my hand and rotatable to
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: soft color, puzzle and cheese. All cube. They all starting
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: to now my cube. Oh hey, we're back to Aaron
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: on this one. I don't know if either of you
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: are fan of the franchise, which is another ship that
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: I can find the measurements for the Galactica from Battlestar Galactica,
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: and if everyone wants to get pedantic, specifically the BS
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: seventy five. Apparently that's relevant. Oh no, I stopped watching
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: the show halfway through. I got tired of it. You
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: missed out on the BS seventy six. I saw enough BS,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: don't worry, and they carried something like two hundred thousand
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: people or some nonsense like that, so they have to
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: be pretty damn big.
- 1:11:15Speaker 6: I'm going to say.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: Larger, larger than the UH than the cube. Unfortunately it's smaller.
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: Do you want to take guess for how much smaller?
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: Ah?
- 1:11:23Speaker 6: Well, I think it's still larger than the Enterprise, so
- 1:11:26Speaker 6: I'll say seven thousand feet.
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: You doubled it again. There it's forty seven hundred feet damn.
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: But you were right.
- 1:11:33Speaker 6: It is larger than the Enterprise. But yeah, right, in terms,
- 1:11:36Speaker 6: you would have to be. Enterprise carried a thousand people.
- 1:11:39Speaker 6: How much did this scarry two hundred thousand supposed? Oh Jesus, okay,
- 1:11:44Speaker 6: I could be wrong. That's that's something I remember from
- 1:11:46Speaker 6: way back.
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: And on Aaron, come in you I mean some status man. Honestly,
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: in my mind it's a small ships. I will only
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: need like four people on the crew and no one
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: else mattered ever. Yeah right, But speaking of ships that
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: carried a lot of people, I got one for you,
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: Chris here. I keep looking over at your screen, and
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: because you have Jen's name up there, I keep going
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: to say Jen because my brains wants.
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: To just using my wife's gear. You want, you can
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: call me John.
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: It's fine if I do my mistake, you know why?
- 1:12:14Speaker 4: Now you know what I've been called worse things. It's fine.
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: I'll call you a handsome But your ship is the
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: axiom from Wally that.
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: Was the one with like all the people on it
- 1:12:25Speaker 4: with a big yeah, that's a big.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: One of the little American milkshakes.
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: Hell yeah, I'm gonna.
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: Say people now as Wally people.
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: Because I don't like them.
- 1:12:41Speaker 4: I'm gonna say bigger.
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: And that's a point because it is in fact bigger.
- 1:12:45Speaker 4: You want to give a stab of that size six
- 1:12:48Speaker 4: thousand feet?
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: Uh no, it's a fifteen thousand feet Wait big ships? Wait?
- 1:12:53Speaker 4: What was the fifteen okay ship?
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: The previous one was four point seven. This was fifteen thousand?
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: Oh okay. Also, I was bothered. I wanted to find
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: this one for this game, and it was not on
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: anybody's list. But some animator from Pixar wrote like an
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: incredible blog post explaining how big it is and how
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: to prove it. That was like how to it because
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: apparently it was like amazing. One of those things they
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: never like had a measurements they ever wanted to be
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: like constricted by, like, oh, well we set the ships
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: as big, we can't do anything with it now. They
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: were like, no, we'll just not say anything and it
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: won't be an issue.
- 1:13:29Speaker 4: And then he was like, no, math, you figure the
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: math out after the movie's done. That's all right.
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: So the next clue is going to be the Normandy
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: SR one from Mass Effect Smaller, Yes, sir, it is
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: absolutely smaller. I feel like, just from information you've laid down, Aaron,
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: you might know how big this is.
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: I don't know. I wish I did.
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: I know that the compare it to the enterprise that's
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: worked for you, Well.
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: Yeah, it has.
- 1:14:01Speaker 6: The enterprise is unassailably bigger. So I'm gonna have to
- 1:14:06Speaker 6: say the Normandy s R. One has got to be
- 1:14:11Speaker 6: I'm gonna go down to a thousand feet.
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: No, that's five sixty yeah, five.
- 1:14:18Speaker 3: Hundred and sixty.
- 1:14:19Speaker 6: I was gonna say seven to fifty, and then I thought, no,
- 1:14:21Speaker 6: that's too small. Oh well, that's what I.
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: Get a note?
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: All good, All right, Chris for you the Nostromo from Alien.
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: Hey, quick question? How big was the last one? I
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: already forgot.
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: Five hundred and sixty feet? Okay, half of the Empire
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: State Building?
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you for putting it in Empire State Building? Yes, sir,
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: how about sea and towers? We don't even care about
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: that thing.
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: Go it's also coincidentally about us half the enterprise.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: If that works for you.
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: Huh. Interesting, I'm gonna say it's bigger.
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: It's app wait, yes it is, sorry, yeah, yeah, no
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: it is, it is. Fuck Uh, it's it's much bigger.
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: It's literally twice as big.
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: It's a level. Wait you're supposed to guess? Uh, I'm
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: just kidding.
- 1:15:16Speaker 4: Yeah, all this one, it sound like I was gonna
- 1:15:19Speaker 4: get it anyways, exactly even that.
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: There you go, Aaron. I think this is what you'll
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: probably be familiar with, the millennium falcon from Star.
- 1:15:30Speaker 6: Wars, from a Star War Oh my god, yes, the
- 1:15:36Speaker 6: the the The previous one was how big eleven hundred?
- 1:15:41Speaker 3: Okay, have you had a.
- 1:15:42Speaker 6: Chance to see this millennium falcon is smaller? Yeah?
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: I figured you'd get that one. Now do you doubt
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: it's length? I'm curious.
- 1:15:50Speaker 6: I'm gonna go, it's gotta be bigger than the Normandy
- 1:15:56Speaker 6: does it?
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: Though?
- 1:15:57Speaker 3: No, it doesn't. Can actually be smaller.
- 1:16:00Speaker 6: I'm gonna say four hundred feet.
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: It's one hundred and forty four feet, but small enough.
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: Damn, this one does make sense though I've seen a
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: Disney or whatever.
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it's smaller than you think it is. Yeah, it's
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: it's again. It's one of those ones where like I
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: had like double checks. I was like, I don't believe it.
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: I don't know. And again, as you might suspect. There
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: is a wide amount of argument this between I believe
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: it's one hundred and forty two feet and one hundred
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: and forty three or one hundred and forty five feet
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: or something. There's like discrepancy and debate over what it
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: really is because Star Wars fans need to argue about something.
- 1:16:39Speaker 6: Yeah, but yeah's you can walk from the front to
- 1:16:41Speaker 6: the back of it in less than twenty seconds, so
- 1:16:43Speaker 6: it's not it wasn't gonna be massive.
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: That's prettyvalid. It's pretty valid.
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: It was one hundred and forty five feet, and if
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: you say otherwise, you're dead to me. I'm a Star
- 1:16:53Speaker 4: Wars fan. Can you tell is that what your doctor said?
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: Chris? Yeah? I mean I swear, I swear.
- 1:17:04Speaker 4: I know it looks one forty three, but it's one
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: forty five.
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: It's a cold space night. It's cold in space.
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: There's one hundred and forty five feet before fucking George
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: Lucas came in changing everything. It's smaller, all right, So
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: for you, Aaron, the serenity fuck for you, Chris, can
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: I go? I'm not I'm stone cold sober. I have
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: yet to take my edible. I've just been thinking about
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: it this entire time.
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: My favorite.
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: I love these games, Chris for you. Actually, this is
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: quite fitting since it is you, Chris, because you were
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: on this episode recently, The Serenity from Firefly.
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: Yeah, these are like the first two ships that I'm
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: familiar with, the name in the in the in the
- 1:17:59Speaker 4: Serenity's I'm gonna say it's bigger than the Millennium Falcon.
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: You're right, God, damn yes, And how bigger I think.
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: I think I'm gonna say. I'm going to say three
- 1:18:13Speaker 4: hundred feet? Damn?
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: Give him the point, dude. Yeah, it's two seventy, but
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: three hundreds closed up and give you the point for
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: that one. That's about crazy with thirty feet, that's all
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: I got any more. Fi.
- 1:18:26Speaker 6: Yeah, if I would have guessed, I would have said
- 1:18:29Speaker 6: about twice as long as the Millennium Falcon.
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: I mean that would have been about three hundred to even, right.
- 1:18:34Speaker 6: Actually, yeah, yeah, it's well done.
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: All right, Well for you, Aaron, you have a chance now, Okay.
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: The Eagle five from space Ball's second second edition From Spaceballs.
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: I'm a Spaceball's guy. What can I say? I figured
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: I figured I figured this crowd we'd have a few fans.
- 1:18:52Speaker 6: Now the Eagle five. That is the Winnebago, correct, I
- 1:18:56Speaker 6: think so, I can't imagine what else it would.
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: Be googling it is the Winnebago.
- 1:19:02Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, then yeah, much smaller?
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: Hell yeah, Now you get to guess how long.
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: A winn Abago is. Yeah, that's this measurementment of a Winnebago.
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: Does this include thrusters?
- 1:19:22Speaker 6: The thrusters came out from the side, so it doesn't
- 1:19:24Speaker 6: change the length.
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: That you sound like my X. Now I'm gonna.
- 1:19:30Speaker 3: Go with thirty feet.
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: It's thirty four, so I'm giving you the point for
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: that one too. That's yeah, definitely given the point for that. Jesus.
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I realized. I think because of some number
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: country we did were actually this would be the even
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: point of the game. But I still want to give
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: you guys the chance at the final one to see
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: who can get closer. You have to tell me first
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: if it's bigger or smaller, and then how big you
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: think it is, and whoever's closer we'll get a bonus point.
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: The Death Star two from Star Wars bigger or smaller
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: than a Winnebago.
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: Just just going out on a limb here, smaller, obviously.
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: Bigger. Yeah, son't that one?
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: But when I when I tuck, definitely smaller?
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: Wait? Were we?
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: Were we both answering this one?
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: Yeah? I don't want to. It was just for fun.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: But if you will be a guess for whoever can
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: closest to the size look of a bonus point two?
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm also going larger.
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I will say you're both right to this bigger
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: it is above thirty four feet. I'll give you that
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: as a as a starting point.
- 1:20:32Speaker 4: Yes, trying to do the math real quick on what
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: the size of a small uncompleted planet.
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: Is complete planet?
- 1:20:41Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: Are we measuring diameter here? Yes? Sorry? This one is?
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: This one is the diameter? This is uh diameter? I
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: guess like a cube of sphere, you can start at
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: any point and go straight across the other point for
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: the diameter. Yeah, so it has as many tips and
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: taints as you wanted.
- 1:20:55Speaker 6: To have many as many exhaust ports as I can.
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: Fit into one ball.
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: I was just about to say, the next question is
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: who told you?
- 1:21:09Speaker 4: Which told you that medical information? That's it's supposed to be.
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: Do you know how insecure I am being two inches
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: long four inches wide with one ball.
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: Joke.
- 1:21:26Speaker 4: It's like a smurf down there, dude, Well it's a mushroom.
- 1:21:32Speaker 3: Oh my god, Oh my god.
- 1:21:36Speaker 4: Christ, get some fucking I'm gonna say. I'm gonna say
- 1:21:44Speaker 4: thirty thousand feet.
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: Okay, Aaron, you have I guess for us.
- 1:21:48Speaker 6: Yeah, I can't go that big.
- 1:21:50Speaker 3: I gotta go.
- 1:21:52Speaker 6: I'm gonna say fifteen thousand feet.
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: Oh you want to break it to them or do
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: you want me to?
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: Yeah? It is five hundred and twenty five thousand feet
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: in diameter. Was massive, and yet I think that was
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: the smaller of the two. Like the original Death Start
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: I think was bigger. No, apparently the second one was bigger.
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: I had that same question.
- 1:22:14Speaker 6: Oh, the second one I did not know.
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: That still not as big as Star Kilar Base though,
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: which had debated pudding here as well. But I figured
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: between the three of them, between the three balls, this
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: was the most famous one. Well, that does bring us
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: to the end of the game, and I have tallied
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: up the scores relations Chris, Hey, you're still walking away
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: with six lovely points in creas only beat you by
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: one with seven points. It was close close.
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: Oh shit, it was.
- 1:22:46Speaker 6: The second Death Star that did it.
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: That's That's what I always said.
- 1:22:52Speaker 4: It always was.
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: Well, we thank you so much for joining us for
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: a little bit of gate Leapers fun. I hope you
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: enjoyed this game, and thank you for indulging us with
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: your knowledge of the franchise, because you actually more than
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: we did. I'll be honest, and I think still do.

- 1:23:07Speaker 3: me off.
- 1:23:11Speaker 6: But I will quickly say that yes, I played Wing
- 1:23:13Speaker 6: Commander five and then went back and played one and
- 1:23:15Speaker 6: two as an adult and thought they were eh.
