- 0:26Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:31culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:34media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:37Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:40I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:43media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:48everyone. OK, 2 fun updates for you guys.
- 0:51The first one is, you might have noticed, but my interview with
- 0:54Cody Simpson went up earlier today.
- 0:57I bet you didn't think you'd be getting 2 episodes today, and
- 0:59honestly, neither did I. But that came through 24 hours
- 1:03ago. It was for the Uber Red Cross
- 1:05clothing drive that's happening on Saturday.
- 1:07And Uber was like, do you want to interview Cody Simpson as
- 1:10part of this campaign? You have to interview him
- 1:12Thursday morning basically. And I was like, sure, let's do
- 1:16it. It's giving millennial dreams.
- 1:18So I hope you guys enjoyed it. It was really fun.
- 1:20It was very casual. We were in person.
- 1:22The sound was a plus. You know, sometimes we struggle
- 1:26with the sound here when we do interviews, especially if
- 1:28they're remote. But thankfully this was in
- 1:30person. So yeah, it was definitely a
- 1:31vibe. And then the second update that
- 1:33I have is for all of you guys that Stan our Brita sponsorship,
- 1:37they're doing a campaign right now around you finding out your
- 1:41hydration quotient. They're calling it.
- 1:43So I'll put a link down below. It's kind of like a magazine
- 1:46quiz. If like an old school magazine
- 1:47quiz. If you guys want to do that quiz
- 1:50and let us know what you got. I got thirst chaser so I
- 1:53definitely need to drink more water.
- 1:55Anyways, before I get into it, Please remember to rate, review
- 1:57and subscribe. Please Spotify star rate US.
- 2:01We are gunning for 1000 Spotify star ratings by the end of the
- 2:04year. All right, the first story that
- 2:05I have for you guys is that Kim Kardashian has opened up about
- 2:09Co parenting with Kanye West and also Northwest's outfit choices
- 2:15on her new interview on Call Her Daddy.
- 2:17So Kim appeared on Call Her Daddy today and I actually
- 2:20thought it was a decent interview.
- 2:22I felt like Kim and Alex had a lot of chemistry.
- 2:24I thought it was light hearted and fun.
- 2:26And I was actually shocked when Alex said they had never met
- 2:29before because from the chemistry that I felt, it seems
- 2:33like they've known each other at least socially here and there.
- 2:36So yeah, I was like pretty surprised to hear that they
- 2:38never met before. Anyways, Kim did open up about
- 2:41quite a few things. The main 2 points that I wanted
- 2:44to cover is she opened up about Co parenting with Kanye and
- 2:48addressing the backlash around North's outfit choices.
- 2:51So on Kanye she definitely didn't speak directly.
- 2:55Like there was some great media training in the way that she
- 2:59answered some of these questions.
- 3:01She would kind of talk around the answer, but in a way that
- 3:04made it sound like if you weren't listening for the media
- 3:06training of it all, it kind of did sound like she was answering
- 3:09the question, but she really didn't.
- 3:11The one thing she did say is that, you know, she implied, I
- 3:14suppose that is obviously hard to Co parent with Kanye and she
- 3:18said she never keeps the kids from him when he wants to see
- 3:20them unless he is in an unstable state and that he currently
- 3:24hasn't seen the kids for several months.
- 3:26The other stuff she talked about with Kanye where like, you know,
- 3:29she doesn't want to clap back. She kind of holds her tongue.
- 3:31I feel like if you've watched the Kardashians, then none of
- 3:34that would be a surprise. She talks about that quite
- 3:36frequently I feel like on the show.
- 3:38Then she also addressed the backlash that she faced as a
- 3:41mother for some of North's recent outfits that she's been
- 3:44wearing. So North is 12, and the Internet
- 3:47recently went wild when she stepped out in a corset and a
- 3:50skirt. This is what Kim said.
- 3:52It's really hard, and it's really interesting because all
- 3:54the kids are wearing the same things.
- 3:56But then my daughter tries to wear it, and then I'm like, OK,
- 3:58we're never wearing that again. Unfortunately, we made that
- 4:01mistake in front of the whole world.
- 4:03She also kind of said in different words that you
- 4:05basically need to pick your battles with tweens and teens.
- 4:09And honestly, I couldn't agree more.
- 4:11Like, I remember specifically, I had this one spaghetti strap top
- 4:16that I bought when I was like, I don't know, maybe 15.
- 4:19And I guess it kind of did show cleavage.
- 4:21It was like a baby doll top, you know, those were super popular.
- 4:24I'm a millennial, so it was really popular in like the
- 4:272000s. And I guess it was a bit
- 4:29cleavagey. And I remember my mom for
- 4:32freaking out when she saw that I'd bought that and I was
- 4:34wearing it. She was like, you should not be
- 4:35wearing that until you're 18. And I was like screaming.
- 4:38And I literally wore it to go see my boyfriend.
- 4:40So I totally get it. I understand it's a little bit
- 4:43different when somebody is on that kind of public stage.
- 4:47Unfortunately, they're going to get a lot of scrutiny for that.
- 4:50So I know it's not so easy. And I do believe it needs to be
- 4:54on Kim to protect North because, yeah, at the end of the day,
- 4:57like this public scrutiny, North is 12, N is 12.
- 5:01You know, like the public scrutiny that she has now
- 5:03received about her body, just millions of people talking about
- 5:06that is really horrific, honestly, especially for a 12
- 5:10year old. And so, yeah, it is on Kim to
- 5:12protect her. So I'm glad that Alex asked
- 5:15these questions. I feel like it was obvious she
- 5:18was told she could not ask about Taylor Swift.
- 5:20But it seems like for the most part, everything else was able
- 5:24to be asked like everything else was like out on the table.
- 5:26And I appreciated that. OK, the next story that I have
- 5:28for you guys. So when the Cody Simpson
- 5:30interview came in, I considered if I should make that mini
- 5:34scroll for today. But this story is what made me
- 5:36decide to do a mini scroll on the same day as the interview
- 5:41because I was like, no, I can't miss telling this story because
- 5:44tomorrow we have a deep dive and then by Monday it will be done.
- 5:47So this Australian small jewelry business is facing so much
- 5:52backlash now because they called out an unnamed influencer for
- 5:55allegedly stealing from them and it has completely backfired on
- 5:59them. So Australian small jewelry
- 6:00business Luna Rae has accused an Australian influencer of
- 6:04stealing a necklace from them. Amy Bradley, who's the Co
- 6:07founder of Luna Rae, posted a viral TikTok earlier this week
- 6:10accusing an unnamed influencer of stealing a quote $360.00
- 6:14uniquely designed necklace from her boutique.
- 6:18So what she said happened was the influencer purchased the
- 6:20necklace through the brand's Shopify store, later filed A
- 6:24chargeback claiming the item never arrived, even though
- 6:27tracking showed it had arrived. It was delivered two days after
- 6:31the shipping. Shopify ruled in the customer's
- 6:33favor, leaving the business out of both the necklace and the
- 6:36cash. She then said that she saw the
- 6:39influencer on Instagram or on social media wearing the
- 6:44necklace. So that has LED her to believe
- 6:46that it was stolen. So that initial video racked up
- 6:48millions of views. I'm not surprised.
- 6:51You know, initially people were like, of course, in favor of the
- 6:55small business. They were, of course, supporting
- 6:57and backing the small business against an influencer.
- 7:00However, things took a turn when the video kept blowing up and
- 7:04she refused to name the influencer.
- 7:06And the comments were just flooded with different guesses.
- 7:09And the guesses were not really based on anything.
- 7:12Some of them were based on certain Australian influencers
- 7:16wearing like similar looking necklaces.
- 7:18But I mean, if you actually looked at a side by side, it was
- 7:21very obvious that these were not the same necklaces, OK?
- 7:23And some of the guesses were literally just because people
- 7:26hate these influencers. So it was completely
- 7:28unprecedented, completely unfair.
- 7:30There were all these influencers then getting flooded in their
- 7:33own comment sections, you know, I'm sure in their DMS, I'm sure
- 7:36that this could very much tarnish possibly their
- 7:39reputations. And Amy proceeded to post 3 more
- 7:44videos. So there was a total of 4 videos
- 7:46and in none of them did she actually name the influencer.
- 7:49The final two videos she did address the fact that like
- 7:53nobody had properly guessed the influencers and then she did
- 7:56clear the name of the influencers that were like the
- 7:59most guessed. So on top of that, the other
- 8:01main thing that made people question like what's going on
- 8:03here is this APR stunt is because in many of these videos
- 8:08she would talk about how they were this 6 year old brand and
- 8:11they were celebrating their sixth year birthday and they
- 8:13were going to be having a sale. So she kept talking about this
- 8:166th birthday sale while also talking about how an influencer
- 8:20stole from them. But like not naming the
- 8:22influencer and letting the comments run wild guessing who
- 8:25it was. Not even really guessing.
- 8:26Like I said, accusing. So those who were wrongfully
- 8:29accused the most were Maddie Hey, Jessica Power, Vanessa
- 8:32Romito and Abby Chatfield. Why are they trolling me about
- 8:35this? Suddenly I'm getting a messages
- 8:36going. How's your free necklace?
- 8:39Free thief? I'm going thief.
- 8:41It's called a gift from my boyfriend that that's custom.
- 8:47So a lot of people have lost trust in Luna Ray and apparently
- 8:50their Google reviews are like a disaster.
- 8:53However, right before I sat down to record this, I saw a TikTok
- 8:56from a girl who says Jess who says that she is the TikTok like
- 9:00creator, like the TikTok social media manager for Luna Ray and
- 9:04she wrote this. Since working for Luna Ray, I
- 9:06100% know it is the most authentic and honest family
- 9:09business run by a husband and wife with their two little
- 9:11girls. I wanted to work for them
- 9:13because of their values and ethics, creating meaningful
- 9:16pieces rather other than contributing to mass production.
- 9:18They're opening up about a real life issue businesses experience
- 9:21and have apologized to those that it is impacted.
- 9:24Let's spread a bit more kindness.
- 9:26And then there are a lot of comments when I thought there
- 9:29was only 12 comments, but almost every comment was from people
- 9:32that said like I used to work for them and I totally agree.
- 9:34So I guess a lot of people who know the business, like in real
- 9:37life, whether professionally or personally are backing them.
- 9:40So we take that for what you will.
- 9:42I don't know. I'm not really sure what to
- 9:43believe. Let me know what you guys think.
- 9:45Like I would say overwhelmingly the Internet thinks that this is
- 9:47a PR stunt, but then having people that have worked for the
- 9:51brand saying like, no, these are amazing people, I'm kind of
- 9:54inclined to believe that too. I'm not really sure.
- 9:56This is one of those instances, one of those stories where I
- 9:59don't really know where I fall. Okay, the last like little
- 10:01tidbits that I wanted to share for you guys is I forgot to
- 10:05mention on I think it was Tuesday that I talked about
- 10:07Kylie or maybe Monday that she made her like rapping slash like
- 10:11singing musical debut in line with her King Kylie makeup line
- 10:16launch. So this is from Variety quote.
- 10:18Kylie Jenner has officially entered the music scene as the
- 10:20breathy vocalist featured on a new single by Tara Junior called
- 10:244th Strike. The single is a continuation of
- 10:27Tara Junior's song 3 Strikes, which was featured in an ad
- 10:30campaign for the launch of Kylie Cosmetics lip glosses nearly a
- 10:33decade ago. Very cool.
- 10:35I really love how much she's like leaning into this.
- 10:37All right, guys, that's it for Mini Scroll today.
- 10:39Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
- 10:42Please remember to rate, review and subscribe, please Spotify
- 10:45star rate US and there will be a deep dive for you guys tomorrow
- 10:48and then I will talk to you on Monday.
- 10:49Bye.
