- 0:00Welcome back to this podcast miniseries Wow to Old School,
- 0:03where we're talking to Wow creators that jumped ship to Old
- 0:06School Runescape to kind of hear about all of their experiences,
- 0:09their perspectives, what they thought, how they're thinking.
- 0:12Just a whole lot of talking about two of the world's most
- 0:15popular MMORP GS today. I'm talking with someone who
- 0:18approaches games with 100% in mind, a Wow retail
- 0:22completionist, A guideless Old School Runescape player.
- 0:25You got to respect the play style.
- 0:28Enjoy this conversation with Annie Fuchsia.
- 0:40Annie, how long have you been playing World of Warcraft?
- 0:45Oh God, since 20? Let me think.
- 0:50Since 20 O 9/20 10:00-ish. So that's around 1516 years.
- 0:57What expansion was that? That was wrath it.
- 0:59Was wrath OK? Gotcha.
- 1:01So. I was kind of late to the party
- 1:05compared to a lot of people that I know these days, but yeah.
- 1:08Yeah, a lot of been a while, Even my friends that don't play
- 1:10anymore, they're always like, Oh yeah, I played when when it
- 1:13first came out and then they just stopped playing after like
- 1:16TBC. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:18But yeah, like most people I know have played since the
- 1:20beginning. And the people who've quit, they
- 1:23quit around wrestling. Yeah.
- 1:25I very weird. So yeah, I guess when you with
- 1:29all the classic stuff that happened, that was your first
- 1:31experience with actually playing classic and it's true vanilla
- 1:36form then like in 2019, cool. Right now there's like there's a
- 1:41ton of stuff going on with World of Warcraft right now with
- 1:45there's like the Legion remix that just came out.
- 1:48There's Mop classic, there's are they still doing Season of
- 1:54Discovery? Is that still happening over
- 1:56there? I think season discovery reached
- 1:58its end point if I'm not mistaken, but they are cooking
- 2:02up like a new sort of. I don't know if we should call
- 2:05it a new season or a new what, what would I call it?
- 2:08Like they, they, they did a few different versions of seasons of
- 2:12Classic, which is different from the regular Classic because they
- 2:15have the classic which goes from Classic into TBC into Wrath,
- 2:20Cataclysm, etcetera. So they have the regular run
- 2:22through of that. And then on the side they had
- 2:24these different projects that were named different things.
- 2:27Seasonal discovery, I think was the biggest and most popular
- 2:29one. And they have said that they're
- 2:31working on another one, but we we don't know yet anything about
- 2:34it. But they're cooking something,
- 2:36apparently, is what they said. Damn, it just seems like there's
- 2:39always new projects, like just different versions of Wow
- 2:44happening at all times over there so.
- 2:46Hard to keep up with. Yeah.
- 2:48Yeah, yeah, it kind of goes two ways.
- 2:50Because in, on one hand, that means the Wow players always
- 2:54have something to do, But for anyone who is just remotely
- 2:58casual in any capacity, they, they get a bit overwhelmed
- 3:02because it's like, OK, which one do I play now?
- 3:06Because especially when they, I think they released MOP Classic
- 3:09really close to a patch in retail.
- 3:12And there's definitely some overlap with the players between
- 3:15the two game modes. So some people decided to just
- 3:18focus on one of them because the other one happened at the same
- 3:20time. So yeah, it can definitely be
- 3:24overwhelming because there's so many different game modes that
- 3:27are available to play. Yeah, there's so many of them.
- 3:29It's it's been like that since I've first started.
- 3:32Like I think it was like 20/20/22 or 2023 is the first
- 3:36time I ever went into like look at World of Warcraft and it was
- 3:40already getting to that point. So they've definitely you.
- 3:43Had never played anywhile before that.
- 3:44No, never. Never.
- 3:46Ever. Oh, really?
- 3:47Yeah. It's my first time.
- 3:48Ever. Yeah, it was something I had
- 3:52wanted to do since I was like a little kid, and I didn't end up
- 3:55doing it until I was like 26 years old.
- 3:57Yeah, that's crazy. I feel like most people at least
- 4:01played a little bit at some point, maybe in Vanilla or TBC
- 4:05or something, just like a little bit.
- 4:07So that's that's kind of rare. That's crazy.
- 4:09Yeah, it was. It was really cool.
- 4:11Yeah, that means since you started playing, it's been a lot
- 4:13going on. Yeah, non-stop.
- 4:15There's always something going on.
- 4:16But given all that is going on, like all these game modes and
- 4:21all the the ruckus recently, what is your kind of general
- 4:26thoughts on the World of Warcraft world right now?
- 4:29Like when you look over at that community, at the game, just
- 4:33like collectively, what are your thoughts on World of Warcraft
- 4:37right now? I'm really split on what I think
- 4:40honestly, because I feel like I don't like that it's so split up
- 4:45into so many different projects. I would have preferred if
- 4:48there's just one game because it becomes a bit overwhelming and
- 4:54sometimes in terms of time as well, I feel like I can't keep
- 4:58up with everything. The classic run through is going
- 5:03kind of quickly. I was playing the classic
- 5:05classic so in 2019 and then I played classic TBC and I played
- 5:10a little bit of classic graph, but just barely.
- 5:13And then with Cataclysm and Mopi just haven't had time because
- 5:17I'm I'm trying to also keep up with things I'm doing in retail.
- 5:20And also I've been trying to play a lot more variety games in
- 5:23general these days and it's just impossible to keep up with
- 5:26everything. And the same with Seasonal
- 5:29Discovery. I think Seasonal Discovery was
- 5:31actually really cool game mode that came out out, but then that
- 5:34one also started ramping up pretty quickly in, in my book at
- 5:37least, maybe people thought it was slow.
- 5:39But from, from from my perspective, it's like, oh, like
- 5:43everyone's level 20 right now. This is the IT level, you know,
- 5:46And then suddenly you're like, OK, now it's level 30 and
- 5:48there's a new dungeon, new raid or new something.
- 5:50And then now everybody has to be level 40 and now it's 50.
- 5:53And from my perspective, it felt too fast.
- 5:57And I think that's the general feeling I have with Wow overall,
- 6:02because Wow has this vertical progression that is replicated
- 6:08in all of the different game modes.
- 6:10And it's just so difficult to keep up with because if you are
- 6:14gone for some time and want to come back, you, you have to 1st
- 6:19work hard to catch up with where everybody else is.
- 6:22So when I was trying to get back to season discovery in phase
- 6:25four, I think it was, I don't even remember exactly.
- 6:27I I discovered, well, I first need to level up and then I need
- 6:31to do that. It is I need to do that and then
- 6:33I can, you know, join with the new content that's out.
- 6:36And it feels, it feels a bit demotivating or like just not so
- 6:43appealing when you realize that you have to work to a certain
- 6:47point to then be, you know, attending the party.
- 6:51And I think that's something that's sort of repeated across
- 6:55the entire franchise in all the different Wow modes.
- 6:59So ultimately what I decided to do was just focus retail because
- 7:03that's the main game that I've spent the most time in.
- 7:06And that's where I've been, you know, committing to.
- 7:10I don't know if you're aware of how I play the game, but I, I
- 7:13normally go for like achievements and all of most of
- 7:17my achievements and things are on my retail account.
- 7:20So I just decide that that's probably the best time spent for
- 7:24me to continue that commitment rather than, you know, half
- 7:29playing all of these other different modes instead.
- 7:32Yeah, yeah, I, I was kind of thinking about that, trying to
- 7:35grasp all the different game modes of, you know, what that's
- 7:39actually doing to the player base.
- 7:41Because I have noticed that in contrast to the Runescape world,
- 7:47where it's a pretty distinct line between Runescape 3 and old
- 7:52school players, World of Warcraft players are pretty.
- 7:57They've got some variety to their, their world of Warcrafts.
- 8:00Like they're like, there are some people that are exclusive
- 8:03to just classic or like anniversary servers, whatever.
- 8:06But there's also a lot of players that dive into all of
- 8:09them. Like they don't have a problem
- 8:10going into all of them. And I can only imagine how tough
- 8:13it is to keep up with everything because of just the the
- 8:16structure of Wow servers and expansions and new patches.
- 8:23I could definitely see that being like completely like
- 8:26scatterbrained about it and not knowing what to prioritize.
- 8:31It sounds pretty pretty rough to try and keep.
- 8:34Up honestly. Yeah, for sure.
- 8:35Honestly, I sometimes wonder if Blizzard is confused themselves.
- 8:39For example, when MOP Classic came out almost at the same time
- 8:45as the retail patch, I felt a bit like question mark, question
- 8:48mark, because MOP classic is pretty retailing like it's not
- 8:53very classic classic and um, a lot of the classic players have
- 8:58overtime fallen off because the game is getting closer and
- 9:02closer to what retail is. So it's not really for them
- 9:04anymore. And then a lot of retail gamers
- 9:06are feeling like, oh, this is starting to get to the
- 9:09expansions that I was playing the most.
- 9:12So I feel like that overlap of players is becoming more retail.
- 9:16And considering that I was always confused why Blizzard
- 9:20would then put both of those patches like a week away from
- 9:23each other or two weeks. Maybe it was, I'm not sure
- 9:26because that that felt very counter active.
- 9:30It didn't really didn't really make sense in my head to make
- 9:34the retail people kind of like compete with themselves because
- 9:38it's like that. That's a great retail expansion.
- 9:41And the dates didn't really make sense to me because if we look
- 9:44at a lot of Classic players like Guzu, for example, since you're
- 9:48familiar with him, since he plays a lot of Runescape now, he
- 9:51never played Mr. Pandaria originally, like ever.
- 9:55So he's never played it. Yeah.
- 9:56And I think that's the case for a lot of Classic people because
- 9:59they quit way before that because, because for them, the
- 10:02game became more retail at that point.
- 10:04So it's like less interesting. And I think that's, I sometimes
- 10:10feel that Blizzard maybe didn't really realize that a lot of
- 10:13Classic people have fallen off at that point.
- 10:15And MOP might in fact be a bit more interesting for retail
- 10:20people. Yeah, it does kind of seem like
- 10:23Blizzard trying to like, claw and scratch for the right
- 10:26answer, almost. And they're just, there's so
- 10:28many. It's so complicated.
- 10:29Yeah, yeah, it's so difficult. What are they supposed to do?
- 10:32Yeah. Because I might be completely
- 10:34wrong too. And maybe, maybe there's no
- 10:36clear answer really. It's just.
- 10:39Definitely seems that way. Yeah, there is.
- 10:41It's hard to, it's hard to like know where the grey zone turns
- 10:45into like white or black. Yeah, it's, it's just so tough.
- 10:49To rewind for a second, I wanted to touch on something that you
- 10:51had mentioned because I actually had it as a point to ask you
- 10:55about of just your, your general background of your play style
- 11:01and like your vibe of approaching World of Warcraft.
- 11:04Because the last guy I talked to Ampie that dude.
- 11:08Yeah. He's a gamer.
- 11:10He is like, yeah, on another level of of just like
- 11:14competitive hardcore speed run, just craziness, like polar
- 11:19opposite of my play style. So it it's very interesting
- 11:23seeing how all of like basically everybody who's trying old
- 11:26school looking back and seeing what kind of player they are.
- 11:29You, you said that you're more of like a collector.
- 11:31So is that like kind of how you approach Wow, like most versions
- 11:35of it, you just kind of like want to do like a completionist
- 11:37thing? Yes, pretty much.
- 11:39I didn't really bother doing it too much with Classic Wow
- 11:42because I felt like, well, this is the old game of what I'm
- 11:46currently playing anyways, like retail, so I didn't really go
- 11:49for achievements there. But whenever I play something
- 11:53new in general, that's generally the mindset I have.
- 11:56So this sense to any kind of games, like when I play RP GS, I
- 12:01like 200% games. I like to get all the
- 12:03achievements. So if I, if I'm just going to
- 12:06throw some games out there like Cyberpunk, Hogwarts Legacy,
- 12:11Space Marine two I'm working on now, I have like 2 achievements
- 12:14left. The the most random games you
- 12:16can think of. Like I, I, I go for 100%
- 12:19achievements because I like to just complete that platinum
- 12:23trophy. I don't know, that's how I like
- 12:25playing things. I just like collecting
- 12:26everything. And yeah, and that's the main
- 12:30way that I would play World of Warcraft as well.
- 12:32But one thing which is I guess a bit of a fun fact, I did go for
- 12:38server first level 90 back in original MOP Classic.
- 12:42Sorry, not MOP classic, just original MOP.
- 12:46So I did have, you know, a teeny weeny experience that ompi.
- 12:52I mean his is more like on the world basis.
- 12:55Mine was just my server. Yeah in my class, but I did get
- 13:00level 91st on my server. That's insane to get to be the
- 13:04first person. Yeah, that's nuts.
- 13:07Yeah, I just spent time like leveling from 85 to 90 multiple
- 13:12times and I made a whole route and everything and I made a
- 13:15whole plan and then I just stayed up all night and I think
- 13:17I, I think I got to Max level and seven hours, seven, 7 1/2
- 13:22hours or something like that. So it wasn't as hardcore as the
- 13:25stuff MP does, but yeah, yeah, I got like a run first.
- 13:29It's a healthier goal to go for then.
- 13:33Yeah, a little bit more reasonable, but I get it though.
- 13:36It like the adrenaline of being speedy.
- 13:38And because this was before I was streaming and people were
- 13:42like whispering me like, hey, like do you stream?
- 13:44Like I want to see what you're doing because people can like
- 13:46slash who the person. Yeah.
- 13:48And it was really exciting, like being able to compete like that.
- 13:52It was fun, but overall the way that I generally enjoy the game
- 13:57or games in general is just exploring everything.
- 14:00Do everything that's possible to do, especially if it's tracked.
- 14:04Like do every dungeon, explore every zone, any kind of random
- 14:08activity, just everything. Gotcha.
- 14:10That's always a surefire way to kind of enjoy a game to the
- 14:14fullest because you don't miss anything if you're trying to
- 14:17like 100% it. So that's.
- 14:19Yeah, that's good. It's just a little more daunting
- 14:23to have that mindset towards like Mmos in general just
- 14:27because if you're going into an MMO that's been around for 10
- 14:30plus years, it's like, Oh yeah, completionist is a little
- 14:34difficult suddenly, but. Yeah, it takes a long time.
- 14:38Definitely. It also allows you to discover
- 14:41really random things sometimes that you realize.
- 14:44Most people will never experience this because it's not
- 14:47needed for anything in Runescape.
- 14:49I can see that so much as well, and I I think being this kind of
- 14:56completionist gamer playing a game like Runescape makes it a
- 15:00lot of fun too, because you get to explore everything and you
- 15:04learn the game at a much slower but deeper level.
- 15:11Definitely. Yeah, that's the way that I
- 15:13enjoy things. Yeah, it's definitely a good
- 15:15game designed for exploration and and definitely collecting.
- 15:20Collecting is is. Yeah.
- 15:22A huge, huge thing people look forward to on Old School.
- 15:26And skilling, skilling because I like, you know, that's a big
- 15:29part too, because what you want to do when, when you like to
- 15:33grind and collect and things like that, having progression
- 15:37bars is like addictive. It's like, OK, I need to Max
- 15:40this one. So yeah, no, Runescape has that
- 15:43with all of the skills and stuff.
- 15:46Like when I see that, I'm like, come on, on Blizzard, why do we
- 15:49only have two professions? Like, let me have all of them.
- 15:51Yeah, yeah. The professions, It's it's
- 15:53really good. How is that, by the way, being
- 15:56able to, you know, if you see a tree and you could chop it, or
- 15:59if you see an oar, you can go mine it and you don't have to
- 16:01worry about what profession you are.
- 16:03It's got to be kind of nice. Yeah, yes, it is.
- 16:06And it, it really builds on the horizontal progression that I
- 16:09think is so good in Mmos, but that I don't know, Wow always
- 16:16kind of went the other way. But I I I think horizontal
- 16:19progression is so good. I definitely prefer it after
- 16:22experiencing different versions of Wow and different Mmos that
- 16:26kind of mimic Wow, horizontal progression just feels much more
- 16:31satisfying because there's so many more things that feel
- 16:35satisfying, like achievements that are possible and
- 16:37everything. And you take a break.
- 16:39You come back and you continue. You don't feel like you missed
- 16:42anything. Yeah, definitely.
- 16:43On top of all of the Wows, all the versions of them, there's
- 16:49possibly a discussion going on, at least amongst the Wow
- 16:54creators talking about this mysterious sought after classic
- 17:00Plus. Are you one of those?
- 17:02That's that is hoping to see a classic plus or is it not really
- 17:08one of the you don't want to add any more Wows into the the
- 17:11archives. Honestly, no, honestly, I'm
- 17:13really curious about it because I actually think Classic Plus is
- 17:18the best potential to add more horizontal progress.
- 17:22So that's kind of what I'm hoping for.
- 17:24I'm hoping for, you know, level cap 60.
- 17:26Don't go above that and add more content at that level.
- 17:31Add more different kinds of gearing or skilling systems that
- 17:37doesn't require you to level up, doesn't require your gear to be
- 17:41completely useless after some time.
- 17:44I don't know if I have that much confidence in Blizzard being
- 17:47able to keep it up in the way where it's going to last long
- 17:51term, but that is something that I'm definitely looking forward
- 17:57to. And I, I hope I, I, I think I
- 17:59think it does have some potential.
- 18:00I think it could be really fun. And my hope is that, especially
- 18:04with the recent interest in Runescape, that Blizzard will
- 18:07take that to heart and hopefully, you know, take some
- 18:11lessons from that to see if they could create something.
- 18:14Because I think people are kind of tired of the vertical
- 18:18progression which happens in every single Wow mode.
- 18:20Yeah, hopefully they do take some notes.
- 18:22Hopefully there's somebody bringing it up in the in the
- 18:24board meetings. Yeah, yeah, I really hope so
- 18:28because I know Fun and fantasy 14.
- 18:30I don't know if you were aware of it, but there was a big surge
- 18:33of interest in FF14 like 4 years ago or so.
- 18:35A lot of Wow streamers were testing it out.
- 18:38Kind of similar to what happened to Runescape now.
- 18:40Yeah, OK. So I, I think Blizzard in retail
- 18:45did learn a lot from them. I I think that's one of the
- 18:47reasons that we have housing now, for example, or, well, it's
- 18:50coming. I think Fun Fantasy was the game
- 18:55that introduced the idea of housing to a lot of wild
- 18:57players, including myself. I had no interest in housing
- 19:00beforehand. I had no idea why people want
- 19:02housing and then I experienced it in FF14.
- 19:04I was like, wait, this is actually so cool.
- 19:07Like the the potential and you don't have to be a weird RP
- 19:10person to enjoy it. Obviously the RP people will
- 19:12enjoy it, but even like regular people because you have a place
- 19:16where you can hang out and like you can have events and you can,
- 19:19well, even if you don't do the social aspect of it, just having
- 19:22your own house, being able to customize it, like that's such a
- 19:25cozy and nice feeling. So yeah, I, I think Blizzard
- 19:29took a lot from the FF14 popularity and I'm hoping that
- 19:35they will take some stuff from Runescape now because I think
- 19:38that's what Classic Plus needs a bit of influence from other
- 19:41games that have done really well in a sort of horizontal
- 19:45progression way. Because I think that's the
- 19:49potential secret of having Classic be interesting for a
- 19:52longer period of time. Yeah, if they're definitely, if
- 19:55they're able to find a way to integrate the horizontal
- 19:58progression system into the structure of this, like, you
- 20:02know, the theme park experience of Wow, if you if they're able
- 20:06to find more ways to do that, then I think that's going to be
- 20:10the most successful approach for something like Classic Plus.
- 20:14But also, you know, they should have looked at Runescape far,
- 20:18far before old school ever existed because.
- 20:23You know, we've been having housing over here since 2006,
- 20:26so. I heard you.
- 20:28Know we've we've been ahead of the game a little bit with that
- 20:31stuff, but it is cool to see like, you know, being able to
- 20:36integrate it because obviously the the Final Fantasy and and
- 20:39wow have a lot more similarities from a structural standpoint.
- 20:43So it's good that they are looking over at at Final Fantasy
- 20:47to kind of see how they can integrate successful features
- 20:50like that. If there is ever a classic plus
- 20:53sort of situation, they'll. Take, I do think more things
- 20:57like that right now, Hopefully that would be great.
- 21:00I feel like they've kind of hinted at least.
- 21:01So I hope they don't disappoint because yeah.
- 21:04Yeah, who knows. So I guess to transition from
- 21:07there, I guess we'll talk about Old School Runescape a little
- 21:10bit. You were obviously a part of
- 21:11this, this mass migration of Wow players.
- 21:16It was very fast. It felt like everyone kind of
- 21:20came over within the same like 2 weeks.
- 21:23Just suddenly we're all experiencing old school for the
- 21:26first time. But you personally, what was
- 21:29your initial reason for seeing everybody try out the game and
- 21:34wanting to try it out yourself? So for me personally, I've, I've
- 21:38had phases of just testing out a lot of type of games like I did
- 21:44Final Fantasy 14 back when that happened, which was it was kind
- 21:49of random. I think I was one of the first,
- 21:50if not the first wild player who was playing Final Fantasy 14.
- 21:53And I was enjoying it and I noticed my audience was enjoying
- 21:57it too. So I was like, OK, well this is
- 21:59nice. Let's get into it properly.
- 22:01And I had such a different experience because for the first
- 22:04time, I was actually reading quests.
- 22:08Yeah, because I never read them in Wow.
- 22:11I always had an add on that just makes me skip everything and
- 22:14just go on to the next thing. Right, Right.
- 22:16So in Final Fantasy 14, I was told immediately, no, you need
- 22:20to like, get into the store. And I was like.
- 22:22Oh, OK, sure. Those players love gassing up
- 22:25that story. Yeah.
- 22:26That they. Yeah, they'll all die on that
- 22:29hill, Yeah. For me, that was a completely
- 22:31different experience, but I was like, OK, that's interesting.
- 22:34Like sure, I'll, I'll try that. So so I did and I ended up
- 22:38having a lot of fun in it. Ever since then, people have
- 22:42been more interested in general to also see me play other memos.
- 22:47So I, I've checked out ESO, for example, Elder Scrolls Online
- 22:51and I've checked and not just Mmos, actually also just RPGs.
- 22:54So I've, I've played a lot of different type of games and I've
- 22:58completed a lot of them as well. 100% achievement on some of them
- 23:02and just different things. And Routescape specifically, it
- 23:06is a game that has been mentioned in my community as
- 23:08well. And I was like, yes, I want to
- 23:10do it, I just don't know when. Same thing with like Guild Wars
- 23:132. That's another game that's on my
- 23:15like bucket list, another game I really need to check out because
- 23:18I've heard a lot of good things about it.
- 23:19I just haven't found the right time because Mmos are so
- 23:21difficult. You don't want to go in for just
- 23:23a day or two. Like you want to put in more
- 23:25time to like get a good feel for it, you know?
- 23:29So with Runescape and Guild Wars 2, and I think there's like a
- 23:34Star Wars MMO as well. These games, I had considered
- 23:38them, but I just didn't know when I'm going to do it with
- 23:41then seeing some people like Kuzu and I think at the time
- 23:46maybe it was only him. I don't remember seeing him
- 23:49anyways play it. And I got more people than
- 23:52saying, well, Amy, you were going to play Runescape, right?
- 23:54Right. So why aren't you playing it
- 23:56now? Like this is the perfect time.
- 23:57And I was like, I was like, yeah, maybe, maybe.
- 23:59And then I gave it like a week or two or something.
- 24:01And then I was like, OK, fine, You know what?
- 24:03Sure. Because people, people were
- 24:05like, I mean, now you now is the right time.
- 24:08Like, what are you waiting for at this point?
- 24:11And I was like, yeah, you know what, You're right.
- 24:13I think this is the right time. If, if everyone now is like
- 24:17opening their eyes to it, it's it's probably the right time to
- 24:20check it out. And yeah, so the reasoning is I
- 24:23love checking out games. I love Mmos in general.
- 24:26And there's a few Mmos that's on my sort of like list that I
- 24:29really want to play because I've heard a lot of great things
- 24:31about them. And this felt like the the right
- 24:34time because everybody were wanting me to play it.
- 24:37At the end of the day, if we want to play a game, if our
- 24:41audience loves it and if other people love to watch us play it,
- 24:44it makes us be able to put in more time into it and enjoy it
- 24:48properly. So it's, it's a huge positive.
- 24:51It's really nice. Definitely prior to making an
- 24:54account and, you know, logging in for the first time, what kind
- 24:59of expectations did you have for old school as like a as a game?
- 25:03Because I'm assuming was this the first time that you had ever
- 25:07logged into any form of Runescape or had you tried it
- 25:10like 15 years ago for a second or?
- 25:13Never tried it. Never tried it.
- 25:14First time ever. So I'd seen pictures of the game
- 25:17here and there, yeah, but that's about it.
- 25:19I never watched it and never played it.
- 25:21So what kind of expectations, given a screenshot or two that
- 25:26you've seen or a clip, what were you expecting to to experience
- 25:31in this game? I think I was expecting a sort
- 25:35of like a low Polygon classic Wow.
- 25:37Yeah. Yeah, I think that's what I was
- 25:39expecting. I think there's definitely some
- 25:41things that does remind me of classic Wow, but it's still so
- 25:45different at the same time. And I think the most mind
- 25:48blowing part of the whole thing is definitely all the different
- 25:52skills, like being able to work on so many different things
- 25:56straight off the bat. Like immediately that's what I'm
- 25:59like. Oh, just like one day in oh, I
- 26:01get it. I know what people are addicted
- 26:03to. Yeah, it happens very fast when
- 26:06you start seeing all the skills interact with each other,
- 26:09intertwine, everything working together.
- 26:11It's like, OK, I get it. Like this just makes.
- 26:13Sense. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:14It's like, I get it. I get it.
- 26:16What about things like clicking to move?
- 26:18Was that weird at all? Like have you played many games
- 26:20that where you Click to move your character around?
- 26:23Yeah, the movement was a bit weird.
- 26:25I don't think I've actually probably played any game like
- 26:27that. I mean, there's like League of
- 26:28Legends, I guess, which is like the closest I would say in
- 26:33general. Yeah, that was, that was
- 26:35different. I got used to it pretty quickly.
- 26:37So it wasn't that bad. It was different.
- 26:38My friend that came over from only fangs to try it for the
- 26:42first time with that big wave. His biggest gripe was, you know,
- 26:47the the whole tick system that the game runs on of like, you
- 26:51know, clicking on a square and then your guy might not move for
- 26:55like a millisecond, like a noticeable millisecond.
- 26:58So it's kind of like a little weird to get used to, especially
- 27:01if the ping is off. Like you just never know.
- 27:03Yeah, for sure. Yeah, I, I agree with that.
- 27:06I I think the the reaction or like the I guess it's like a
- 27:10feeling of responsiveness felt off for sure compared to what I
- 27:14was used to. Yeah, because in World of
- 27:16Warcraft it's like buttery smooth WASD, like instant
- 27:20responses like it obviously unless there's huge lag spikes
- 27:23or something, but you're most part it is just.
- 27:26You're. Yeah, it's.
- 27:28Really immersed in your character, moving exactly where
- 27:31and when you want. So it's a it's definitely a
- 27:34different vibe entirely. I I think it's the movement
- 27:36specifically is one of Wow's greatest strengths in general.
- 27:39Oh yeah, definitely. Even even people who hate the
- 27:42game, we'll admit. Yeah, like the the movement in
- 27:45combat is super smooth, feels so nice, very responsive.
- 27:49Yeah, definitely. So it's so going from that to
- 27:53point click and then also make a bit of responsive delay or like
- 27:57a tick system that that that was definitely jarring, at least for
- 28:01some time. But it's it's so bad.
- 28:04Like, I think it's still fine. I think when you're just moving
- 28:07around and doing relatively simple quests, I don't think
- 28:10it's that big of a deal. I do think PvP makes it feel,
- 28:16it's like a it's like a first realization when you start
- 28:19playing the game and then you get used to it and it's fine.
- 28:21And then you play PvP and it's like, oh, OK, wait, this is
- 28:23really awkward PvP entirely. Yeah.
- 28:29Because then you really feel the tick part again and it's like,
- 28:32oh, OK, wait. It's the shock of the delay
- 28:34again, it's actually crazy, like some of the PvP things I've seen
- 28:38from people like with the the gear switching and everything,
- 28:41like people are actually insane. Yeah, it's an entirely different
- 28:45universe of Runescape with PvP. It's it's that stuff.
- 28:49PvP. It's almost like I feel like I
- 28:51could throw new players off just by looking at it, not even
- 28:54trying it, but just looking at it.
- 28:55It could be like, I'm never going to try anything to do with
- 28:58that. It's very terrifying looking,
- 29:01but. It is so.
- 29:02Do you, do you remember like your first, I don't know about 7
- 29:06days of playing? This is your first week of
- 29:09consistently logging in and playing like what your first
- 29:11impressions of old school was. I from a person who likes
- 29:17progression and collecting and things like that, I, I loved it.
- 29:23Honestly. It was so easy to get into.
- 29:25I immediately see different skills I can progress and I
- 29:29think it's maybe a little bit overwhelming, but as soon as I
- 29:35was guided to follow the what was it called, the advisory on
- 29:40the what is it called? Oh yeah, the activity advisor,
- 29:43whatever it's called. Activity, yeah, once I got used
- 29:46to using that, it was really smooth because I would just
- 29:49choose, you know, OK, next quest, OK, next quest.
- 29:52And then you could also clearly see like what this quest
- 29:54requires the skill and it's like, oh OK, I can work on the
- 29:57skill. And then I had something to like
- 30:00follow. There was like there was a plan.
- 30:02There was a red thread. When I was able to start using
- 30:04that, it started feeling really smooth.
- 30:07That's so funny that you mention that because well, a little
- 30:11background, when Soda Poppin first started his old school
- 30:14stuff, his, I don't know if it was his chat or something had
- 30:19told him, you know, follow the activity advisor and that's what
- 30:23he did, which it took him. I think it went from doing
- 30:28Witch's potion to goblin diplomacy to Ernest the Chicken,
- 30:35like all those free to play quests and he's going in blind.
- 30:38He was insisting on going in blind doing like no guides.
- 30:42And if you do those quests, like those very simple free to play
- 30:46quests that were put into the game in like 2003, it's
- 30:49miserable if you don't know where to go or what to do like
- 30:52they are. So they're insuffering.
- 30:56I enjoyed that because I played no quest guide too, did you and
- 31:00I? Yes, I did.
- 31:02You know, the quest is a goblin diplomacy.
- 31:04I think that was the one. The one or the one of the ones?
- 31:07Yes. Yeah.
- 31:07So in the end, when they asked for a brown 1, you know what I
- 31:11did? I was like, OK, wait, let's
- 31:15think about this. OK, if you, if you mix, OK, if
- 31:18you mix yellow with this, then you get this color.
- 31:20OK, so now we have we have green and then we have so yellow and
- 31:24blue got green, blue and red got purple.
- 31:27If you mix green and purple, I'm pretty sure that becomes brown.
- 31:30I was trying to create a brown piece of armor.
- 31:34It's very understandable, yeah. I was walking because I didn't
- 31:38realize that they asked for the original.
- 31:40So I was walking everywhere and I, I got, I had to farm.
- 31:43I think I had to re farm some of the parts to create the dyes.
- 31:46And then I tried to like put it together and then it didn't
- 31:49work. I couldn't like I can't mix
- 31:51green with purple. It just wouldn't work.
- 31:53And I was like, OK, I don't know what I'm supposed to do now.
- 31:56OK, let me go and talk to them again.
- 31:57Maybe they'll give me another hint.
- 31:59That's so funny. Either I had to talk to them or
- 32:01I read the Quest blog. I don't remember which one it
- 32:03was, but I, I, I basically opted in to just, let's see if I can
- 32:06get some more information. And then they mentioned the
- 32:09original color and I was like, or like original form.
- 32:13And I was like, Oh no. Yeah, just gave you the
- 32:16punchline of the whole quest to let you know what to do next,
- 32:20basically. Yeah, yeah, I was legitimately
- 32:23trying to create a brown dye and I think I did Google in the end
- 32:28and I was right. It is supposed to give brown
- 32:31whatever the mixture was. Was it green and purple?
- 32:33I don't remember. It actually does mix to become
- 32:35brown, but it just didn't work in the game.
- 32:37Yeah. So yeah.
- 32:39I needed to too many. Layers.
- 32:40Too many layers there for the game to understand.
- 32:43Yeah, like mix the dyes once, not twice, Yeah, but no, Yeah,
- 32:47there was a lot of things like that though.
- 32:48And I think that's also what made the game enjoyable,
- 32:51figuring things out because you have to read everything.
- 32:55I mean, even now because I, I still continue, I'm still guide
- 32:59less when I play. And I've gotten into like a
- 33:02habit of, OK, I need to talk to every embassy that's like
- 33:05related to anything. And I need to keep reading the
- 33:08quest information in case it's updated.
- 33:11And I need to also always note whatever items I've picked up
- 33:14from this quest. And then also I need to note
- 33:18what quests were required for this quest, because I need to go
- 33:22and check back at that quest to see what rewards were given from
- 33:26that quest because it might be related to what I'm doing now
- 33:29and or like, or what, what skill is required.
- 33:32Oh, like 33 magic. OK, I'm probably gonna need
- 33:35telekinesis for something. Yeah.
- 33:37So like, I, I've, I've had to like, get into all of that
- 33:40stuff. And honestly, I think that's
- 33:42what makes it so fun. Definitely 100%.
- 33:45There's not too many players that that approach the game that
- 33:47way, but I think that is always going to be the best way to
- 33:51experience old school if exploration is something that
- 33:55you really, really enjoy. So that's awesome that you're
- 33:58experiencing that way. To touch on the activity advisor
- 34:01thing again to what I told Soda, the reason why he went to the
- 34:05activity advisor because basically I don't know if you
- 34:07did this as well of opening the advisor and going top down, like
- 34:12just let the top thing kind of serve as like what you do next.
- 34:16I asked. I would ask the chat to pick one
- 34:19from the ones that are advised. Yeah, OK.
- 34:21That's what I. Guess in a way I was guided to
- 34:24One Direction like I'd say that I would say, OK, these three are
- 34:27currently available, which one should I go for?
- 34:29And then they would say this one, OK, I'll go for that one.
- 34:31Cuz choosing it like top down, like on to the next.
- 34:34Yeah, he was just choosing like top one and then next top one,
- 34:37next top 1. And I was like, that is his Wow
- 34:40brain being totally present in Old School Runescape.
- 34:44Like the whole linear. This is the next step I take.
- 34:47Here's what I do next sort of thing, because that is 20 years
- 34:51of playing World of Warcraft of like taking a linear path and
- 34:54going on that ride to, you know, level.
- 34:56Can you not do it that way? Because it it makes sense in my
- 34:59brain to do that. Yeah, yeah, he like you could
- 35:01totally do it that way too. But it's almost like, it's
- 35:05almost like you're restricting yourself in a way, like a like a
- 35:08self-imposed restriction in in old school because there's just
- 35:13you can play any way you want. Like you are not confined to any
- 35:18sort of guide or a task list or anything.
- 35:23It's a weird concept to grasp if like World of Warcraft has been
- 35:28your grind for the last 15 years.
- 35:32You know, it's hard to go from theme park to sandbox sort of
- 35:37thing. So from like a Runescape POV
- 35:40then or like a Runescape person POV, how would you expect people
- 35:45to do that instead? Because when you tell me that he
- 35:48use it activity advisor and he was picking the first quest
- 35:51there and like would continue that progress for me that makes
- 35:54sense. But maybe that's my wild brain.
- 35:56So what would you think is like the thing that would make sense
- 35:59for you instead? Well, it's a hard question to
- 36:03answer because my first account was in like 2006.
- 36:06My Runescape looked like this Runescape initially.
- 36:09It was like, you know, if you had played classic back when it
- 36:12was actually classic you. Know.
- 36:15It's really tough for me to kind of envision not only a, a new
- 36:20player, but a new adult player to like be in their shoes
- 36:25because like, we were all just kids playing back then as our
- 36:28first experience. So it's, it's a whole different,
- 36:31I guess, mindset of, you know, that whimsical feeling of
- 36:34exploration and not knowing what's efficient.
- 36:38And I like, I gave soda a whole Google document of all of these
- 36:44things that were really in no way efficient.
- 36:47Like but I wanted to to go experience different things in
- 36:51the game that the game would never directly tell him to go
- 36:55try. Like I had him go make his own
- 36:57bronze armor like I like nowhere in the game.
- 37:00Oh you gave him quests? Like kinda I was just like go
- 37:04experience this, like go mine some tin and copper, make some
- 37:06make some armor sort of thing. And then I gave him some things
- 37:10that were efficient, but, you know, just letting him know that
- 37:15like, you know, this is the meta, but you shouldn't really
- 37:18follow it. You know, you should just go
- 37:19explore, click NPCS, talk with things, look for quest icons,
- 37:23you know, and just sort of be a part.
- 37:27Of the amount of people, the the amount of people who told me do
- 37:31waterfall, do waterfall, do waterfall like for for weeks I
- 37:35was like, guys, I'm not going to do waterfall.
- 37:37Yeah, that's because I'm going to do it when, when it's like
- 37:41the natural way to do it. People who do waterfall for
- 37:43efficiency reasons, they know exactly what they're doing too.
- 37:46And if I'm going in there blind, I wouldn't know if maybe there's
- 37:51something dangerous there and I can't like spoil the quest for
- 37:53myself. And yeah, like, I I was like,
- 37:56no, I'm not doing it. I'm going to do it when my level
- 37:58is appropriate. I don't care if things are
- 38:01teasable. And the same with is it called
- 38:04Stronghold? Stronghold right with the.
- 38:06Stronghold of security like the yes yeah 4 levels Yep Yep.
- 38:10Yeah, so that one I was like, no, I don't want quick money
- 38:14either. I'm not gonna do it.
- 38:16But in the end I did end up doing it because I started the
- 38:21house quest. Which is house.
- 38:24No, the one where you can create your own house.
- 38:29Oh, the the Daddy's Home mini quest thing, Yes.
- 38:32Gotcha. Yes.
- 38:34And that quest is so expensive. Yeah, it is.
- 38:37And I was broke and I and I hate the feeling of starting
- 38:41something and I can't complete it.
- 38:43So I was like, OK, guys, I'm going to do the thing that you
- 38:45were talking about. Was it Stronghold?
- 38:47OK, I'm going to go for it. I will still go in blind, but
- 38:50I'm going to go for it. Yeah, Other than that, I I was
- 38:53avoiding like efficiency routes because I wanted to just
- 38:57experience the game and like a natural way.
- 39:00The same with crabbing. Like even at this point, like I
- 39:02stopped myself around attack level 60, I think it was 66 to
- 39:0765 because I don't want to be who I don't want to feel like
- 39:11I'm over levelled. I rather want to work on like
- 39:13other things to make it balanced and just make it more like a
- 39:18proper first experience basically.
- 39:20Yeah, the the whole gem crab because I mean that thing got
- 39:23introduced as you guys came over basically and it has created a a
- 39:27new. I don't even know if it's
- 39:28technically a problem, but it does make a lot of players like
- 39:34their progressions kind of skewed if they just AFK for
- 39:37weeks on end like that. That was possible before, but it
- 39:40wasn't as accessible and easy to do so now tons of new players
- 39:45are just like yeah, AFK ING 80 strength before they get dragon
- 39:50Slayer completed sort of thing. And it's.
- 39:52Yeah, exactly. I didn't want.
- 39:53That yeah, like that's never happened before.
- 39:55No way. Yeah.
- 39:57So I do tend to sometimes ask for guidance also like.
- 40:01Am I at a good level for this? Like without telling me what the
- 40:05quest is about, just am I at a good level?
- 40:07And also normally you can also tell by the quest requirement
- 40:11that's like listed in the quest. But sometimes you may not
- 40:15realize because I think I, I experienced a couple quests
- 40:18where the requirement is low, but there's some high level mobs
- 40:21nearby and that's kind of scary. But the point is that you don't
- 40:24actually have to interact with them.
- 40:26And yeah, so that that can that that's always a little bit scary
- 40:29when you're going in blind because you're like, oh, wait,
- 40:32do I need those guys? I am assuming not because their
- 40:34requirements said this much, but yeah.
- 40:36So with with the whole like going in blind play style, what
- 40:40what are your general thoughts on the structure of old school
- 40:45quests in this? Since it's you know, people
- 40:48point out all the time and I'll point it out as well of just how
- 40:51unique old school runescapes quests are compared to literally
- 40:54every other MMO out there. So what?
- 40:57What are your thoughts on on how they work?
- 40:59My how they work or the content of them like?
- 41:04Like just just the fact that, you know, it's a store, there's
- 41:07stories going on sometimes and it's not like fetch and kill
- 41:10quests. Yeah, I love that.
- 41:13Yeah. It makes it really unique.
- 41:15Every quest is a little story. I also love how there's a lot of
- 41:18humor put into the quests, definitely, which I was
- 41:21introduced to really early, like the Romeo and Juliet quest, one
- 41:26of the early ones that I did. There's a lot of really funny
- 41:29quests. And I think with with games like
- 41:33Wow, a lot of it is fetch quests.
- 41:36I mean, if you get into it, there are some funny stories as
- 41:39well, but, but most of it in terms of what actions you're
- 41:43taking is basically just fetch this or kill this.
- 41:47But in Runescape, it's a lot more like the the story itself,
- 41:53like the different little stories that are being told.
- 41:55And sometimes it might be really silly too, where like you go to
- 42:01an, you go to a, a person in the game or an embassy in the game
- 42:04and he wants something and then you go and get it and you come
- 42:07back and say, oh, wait, I also want this other thing.
- 42:09And it's like, Oh my God. Yeah.
- 42:11Why didn't you say so before? So there's like like kind of
- 42:15like humor and frustration sometimes with quests,
- 42:19especially if you're playing blind.
- 42:20Again, if you're not playing blind, I don't think you'll feel
- 42:22it, especially if you're playing with like a quest helper because
- 42:27there's a lot of quests where like there's that one quest.
- 42:31What was it called just above Falador with the anvil?
- 42:36Oh, Doric's quest. Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 42:39I think it's Doric's quest where he asks you to bring a bunch of
- 42:42oars, but he doesn't ask for them all at once.
- 42:45So you have to like, keep going back and forth.
- 42:48I think that was the one I didn't know.
- 42:50We didn't. Ask for it all at once.
- 42:52That's so funny, I actually didn't know that.
- 42:55I'm not mixing it up. I think so, yeah.
- 42:57Oh my God, that's really funny if that, if that's true, because
- 43:01I've always just gotten that pre written dialogue of like, oh,
- 43:06how convenient. You have everything I need in
- 43:09your inventory. Like yeah, that's awesome.
- 43:12I was. Told about that afterwards where
- 43:15he says that if you already have everything in your bags or maybe
- 43:18that's what it maybe I'm mixing it up maybe it is once but he.
- 43:23But if you know beforehand, you don't have to go and fetch them.
- 43:25So maybe that's what it is. I'm not sure.
- 43:27But there's a lot of things like that where you have to like go
- 43:30back and forth. And that little part of like
- 43:33needing to essentially travel in the game, I think also makes you
- 43:39feel more like deeply connected to the quests.
- 43:42You remember them more. Admittedly, once you've done a
- 43:45lot of quests, some of them might blurt into each other, but
- 43:49if you take a look at them and like read them, then it's like,
- 43:51Oh yeah, you know, that's it. Like I remember that.
- 43:53Whereas quests and Wow, it's like, yeah, there's this quest
- 43:56over there. Like, did you ever do it?
- 43:57It's like, I have no idea if I've done it before.
- 43:59Like I can't even read the quest text and I'll be like, I have no
- 44:01idea. But with these quests, I, I may
- 44:04need to be reminded of the details, details.
- 44:05But if I look at them, especially if I see the quest
- 44:08text, I'll be like, Oh yeah, I remember that for sure.
- 44:10And I and I think that's the part of taking the time to read
- 44:15it properly, which which makes it like ingrained in the brain
- 44:19in a different way. Definitely, yeah.
- 44:22I'm a big, big fan of the quests.
- 44:24It's like the whole reason I got started on YouTube was because I
- 44:28made a series doing all the quests in the order that they
- 44:31were put into the game and it was awesome going into every
- 44:37single story, like going through the details of it just to kind
- 44:41of create a story out of the stories.
- 44:43It's really cool how in depth some of them go and especially
- 44:47since some of them are are really old quests.
- 44:49Like the writing is still pretty good.
- 44:50I don't know if you've done many of the newer quests like 2016
- 44:55and on like the old school exclusive quests, but they got
- 44:59really, really good, like the writing and is is is amazing,
- 45:02Yeah. So hopefully you get to
- 45:04experience all of them down the road.
- 45:06Yeah, I'd, I'd love to. I, I think that's my sort of
- 45:10plan in the future to, to stick to doing things.
- 45:13I know that makes it means it's going to take a long time, but I
- 45:17want to like overall, like overtime to go through all of
- 45:21the quests guide list just to get into them properly because I
- 45:25think it's more fun that way. But it does mean it takes it can
- 45:29take a really long time. Yes.
- 45:31There was one question I did recently.
- 45:34I forgot what it's called, but I had to.
- 45:40There was a statue that was broken that needed to be rebuilt
- 45:42and the head of it needed to be. They needed to make a new design
- 45:46for the head. And then there were these like
- 45:48different factions with the different colors and I needed to
- 45:52befriend one of them and like rank up by giving them ORS.
- 45:55Do you remember that quest? Yeah, it's, I mean, it's, it's
- 45:59the Caldegram dwarf, the first quest in there.
- 46:02They. Oh my God, I don't know why I
- 46:05can't think of the giant dwarf. Yeah, giant dwarf.
- 46:09I think I. Think it is giant dorf.
- 46:10Yeah, I think that's it. So that's another one where I
- 46:13had to when I would I'll go to them and then they ask me for
- 46:20like certain ORS or bars. Maybe it was I give that to them
- 46:24and then they ask for another set those.
- 46:26Yeah, whatever. Or is it I go back and again and
- 46:30again and again? Yep, I made I made a whole song
- 46:33about that quest, about that part of the quest of joining a a
- 46:37company and working for them and going and getting the oars that
- 46:40they yeah, I yeah, I think I made the song because I was like
- 46:44upset at the time. Like it made me mad to the
- 46:48point. Like I got to make this into a
- 46:50positive thing somehow. I do remember.
- 46:53That yeah, yeah, it was really funny.
- 46:55I was also going crazy cuz I my Sprint would be, would be
- 46:59running out. I'm like walking like slowly cuz
- 47:02I can't Sprint anymore. Oh yeah, it's it's.
- 47:04Brutal. It was funny, yeah.
- 47:06And even the other quests, the nearby, like the one where you
- 47:09had to like get the whole outfit and the the weapon as well, like
- 47:17a lot of those little parts there were like back and forth a
- 47:20lot. And I think it's part of, in a
- 47:23way it becomes like part of the humor in it because it becomes
- 47:26funny. Like no way I have to go all the
- 47:28way back there again. Yeah, yeah, it's awesome.
- 47:33It's almost like them just messing with you.
- 47:34Like, it's just, it's a fun, you know it.
- 47:37It keeps you in your place like as an adventurer.
- 47:40And it's like not a hero like, you know, like, oh, champion in
- 47:44in World of Warcraft, just like, no, you're just a guy here, like
- 47:47you're just some some random adventure guy.
- 47:50So it's cool to kind of get back on track a little bit with the
- 47:55just design of Old School in general, because I know you have
- 47:59been a huge advocate. I guess I don't know if that's
- 48:02the right word, but essentially you've highlighted the fact that
- 48:05progression matters in Old School Runescape.
- 48:08That's been a huge discussion with the migration of Wow
- 48:12players of just kind of highlighting this fact that your
- 48:16progress in Old School will remain your progress, your
- 48:21meaningful progress, no matter what updates come out.
- 48:24So what is your experience with that so far like that that
- 48:27you've kind of seen in in contrast to what you've
- 48:30experienced with your years of playing World of Warcraft?
- 48:34Yeah, the progression just feels like you said, it feels
- 48:37meaningful. Like I feel like I, I can take
- 48:40breaks and I can come back and I don't feel demotivated.
- 48:43So I think for example, if I was a new player playing World of
- 48:47Warcraft retail, I would probably like if, if I end up
- 48:51taking a break, I would probably be very unlikely to go back
- 48:54because what am I going back to, to restart?
- 48:57Because there's like Final Fantasy 14.
- 48:59The way that I feel with that is the the strong main story quest
- 49:03line. So I have progressed until the
- 49:08last expansion and what if I if I go and play again, I know
- 49:12exactly what I'm going to do. I have a plan.
- 49:14I I won't feel like I've lost anything.
- 49:16I don't have to restart anything because I will pick up the story
- 49:19from where I stopped and continue.
- 49:21And with with Runescape, I feel the same way.
- 49:24Like I because I do stream a lot of different games right?
- 49:27Like I, I've recently taken a break from Runescape, although I
- 49:30did, I have a Runescape day like a few days ago or like a week
- 49:34ago. But I don't feel demotivated to
- 49:36play Runescape because I feel like how my progress matters and
- 49:40there is like a red thread that eventually will reach a
- 49:43completion. So for example, I finished all
- 49:46the free to play quests and then now I have I'm working on like
- 49:50the normal member quests. And so that's one part of the
- 49:53progression. And then there's also the
- 49:55progression of the different skills, which kind of go hand in
- 49:58hand because many quests require skills.
- 50:01So I want to look at the different quests I'm going to
- 50:03do. I have the different skill sets
- 50:05that I want to work on at the same time, and that feels nice.
- 50:10Like, that feels like if I took a break, it's not like, oh, no,
- 50:13now I've like, missed out and now it's too late now, why
- 50:17should I bother? It feels like, yeah, no problem.
- 50:20I'll get right back on it. Like, right.
- 50:23So what was the last thing I did?
- 50:24Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I was doing bird runs.
- 50:27Yeah. Let's you know what?
- 50:28Let's get back on that because I do need that skill for this
- 50:30quest I want to do. So I was almost there.
- 50:34But I'm missing one skill. How convenient.
- 50:36I can, you know, pick right back up from that point.
- 50:40And it's a good thing that I was progressing it before because I
- 50:43still need to do this quest. And that's a really nice
- 50:47feeling. It makes it playable.
- 50:50At any point, you can always go back and play, which I think is
- 50:54so important in like today's society in 2025 when a lot of
- 50:59people are really busy. Like people have jobs, people
- 51:02have families, people have other things to do.
- 51:05People also tend to have a lot more games to play these days.
- 51:08I think 15 years ago, 20 years ago, there weren't that many
- 51:11games that even existed. Whereas today people dip into a
- 51:16lot more games in general. And that's at least what I have
- 51:19experienced myself. And also a lot of like people
- 51:22that I see. And a game like Runescape is a
- 51:25feasible game to have that you hop back into every now and
- 51:29again. Compared to Wow, I, I think
- 51:31people who play Wow very casually, it eventually end up
- 51:35just dropping off because it's like, you know what?
- 51:38I'm just, I don't want to restart my progress again.
- 51:41I did last time and I never even reached the end of the raid
- 51:45because like I got busy in the end and it's like I don't want
- 51:48to restart that just did not get anywhere 100%.
- 51:52And it's funny because I call it casual friendly, but it's also
- 51:56very hardcore because you can go in really deep.
- 52:00Like it's not casual friendly in the sense that there's nothing
- 52:03to do. There is so much to do, but it's
- 52:05casual friendly in the sense that if you have lost time, you
- 52:09don't lose your progression. Definitely, yeah, there there's
- 52:12such a, a huge caliber of players, you know, very, very
- 52:16casual to the sweatiest video gamers in the history of video
- 52:20gamers just like. Yeah, it's a, it's a key into
- 52:23all levels. Yeah, it's it's and there's not
- 52:25too many games that can really say they achieved that with
- 52:29their player base. So it is really cool seeing
- 52:32everyone's different play style. Like everyone I've talked to so
- 52:36far of all the Wow players, they all of you guys play differently
- 52:40and, and approach old school differently, which is so cool.
- 52:43Whereas on World of Warcraft, like yeah, there's players
- 52:46sweatier than others, but everyone's basically like on the
- 52:49same ride. So you know, everyone's got that
- 52:52final destination of OK, best in slide gear, that raid, that
- 52:57specific raid with everyone else.
- 52:58That's where we're headed. Whereas on old school, it's like
- 53:02you have no idea what anyone's up to at any point.
- 53:04You don't know what anyone's goal is.
- 53:06You don't know, you can't predict what they're thinking
- 53:09because they're, they could just be doing anything.
- 53:11So it's, it's very interesting to see what people choose to do
- 53:16to, to progress in this game. It's it's really cool.
- 53:20Yeah, no, I agree completely for sure.
- 53:23Where Where is your account around like combat level,
- 53:26quests, progression? Like where would you say you
- 53:29are? I think I'm around.
- 53:31I hit 1000 level. Oh did you get 1000 total?
- 53:34Yeah, I hit 1000 total. I'm at 62 quests and yeah, my my
- 53:40strength attack and defense that was around 60 and my combat is
- 53:44added up to 74 with that. Nice, that's a that's a good
- 53:49like mid level area. Being that far into the game and
- 53:53especially going in blind, what would you say like your favorite
- 53:56experience is gameplay wise? Like what do you most look
- 54:01forward to doing when it comes to progressing?
- 54:03At this point, I would say it's the quests, yeah.
- 54:06I feel like the quests are kind of like the rewards from scaling
- 54:09up, if that makes sense. Like I, I work on the skills in
- 54:14order to be able to do the quests, and the quests are, it's
- 54:17such a surprise every time because you don't know what
- 54:20you're going to get. Like this is going to be some
- 54:22difficult combat. Is it going to be a ridiculous
- 54:25quest line? Is it going to be like something
- 54:28funny, something weird, something I don't know, Like you
- 54:33just don't know when that surprise is always interesting
- 54:35or or some really difficult puzzles that happens too,
- 54:39especially when you don't play with quest helpers.
- 54:42Some stuff, it's really, really difficult.
- 54:45Yeah, I wouldn't dream of doing some of the puzzles in this game
- 54:48without at least a wiki, a wiki guide open or something.
- 54:53There's so many crazy puzzles that it's just like, what's
- 54:57going on, but it is. Very.
- 54:59Satisfying doing it without a guide.
- 55:01Yeah, at least as much as possible.
- 55:03I've, I've been told some of the quests do become extremely
- 55:08ridiculous and I should probably at least opt into using wiki,
- 55:12but but for now I've managed to not use that.
- 55:15But I sometimes do a thing where I like if I'm really stuck on
- 55:19something I don't like taking hints, but what I do is
- 55:22sometimes ask my viewers to to give me like a yes or no.
- 55:27So I would I ask a question for example, am I in the right area
- 55:32to be progressing and then they say yes or no?
- 55:35That's a pretty good system, I'm glad you're experiencing it that
- 55:37way and I think the chat helping just a like with yes and no is
- 55:41definitely a good much needed system I would say.
- 55:44Yeah, like if I've been, if I've been stuck for like half an
- 55:46hour, you know, and then it's about time.
- 55:48Yeah, one of my friends depends. He's on YouTube, his name's
- 55:53Alien Food and he's actually played Runescape before like he
- 55:58had, we've done like the quest in the game like 5 years prior
- 56:02to starting a series and he started a series just going in,
- 56:06doing everything completely guide list, like the entire game
- 56:08guide list. And even as somebody who's like
- 56:11gone in and played through the game for the most part, guide
- 56:15list is still crazy. Like there are some things that
- 56:19you just will never realize, like how little hints there are,
- 56:25like by the game itself. Like there's some ridiculous
- 56:28yeah, problems with like the early quest and stuff.
- 56:31I'm sure you've come across a few of them by now.
- 56:33But there's just You never know. Yeah, there's been some really
- 56:36tricky ones. Yeah, it's just some of them
- 56:38just so nonsensical. So it's it's always a a a
- 56:43mystery what you're getting into, especially without a
- 56:45guide. Has anyone told you about any
- 56:48like the high level content or are you just kind of like wait
- 56:50until you get there? No.
- 56:52Yeah, like I've heard of things like fire Cape, but I, I don't
- 56:57know what exactly what content it entails.
- 57:02I yeah, I know. I keep it kind of like I don't
- 57:05want to know anything. Nice, that's going to pay off
- 57:07That is, that's definitely going to be a really cool experience,
- 57:10like just stumbling upon like where content.
- 57:13Is that's what I'm thinking too, yeah.
- 57:14That'll be that'll be really cool.
- 57:16So right now, do you have any set in stone goals?
- 57:21I always just have like overarching goals, which is the
- 57:24way that I enjoy games, which is complete everything.
- 57:27So what I would love to do eventually is complete every
- 57:31single quest, for example. And that in itself does kind of
- 57:36like force me to do a lot of other things in the game too,
- 57:39because many quests require a lot of different skills.
- 57:42So then I have to work on all of those different skills.
- 57:45And while I do that, I might be like, you know what, like I
- 57:48actually really want to push the skill to like this level.
- 57:52Like I recently I got my agility to 60.
- 57:55I didn't really need it right now, but I noticed there's a lot
- 57:57of exploration where which like makes it easier if you have
- 58:02agility. So I felt like, yeah, you know
- 58:04what, I want to push my agility a bit because it feels nice to
- 58:06have. So I, I don't have that many
- 58:10like super immediate goals. I just have like these
- 58:14overarching ones where I want to complete the request and then
- 58:17from that I will work on the skills that I need depending on
- 58:21which quest I want to do first. I will, you know, get that skill
- 58:24to that level and and so on. Yeah, I I would definitely say
- 58:28like the the quest Cape is always like I'll always tell
- 58:33people to go for that goal because that's my favorite Cape,
- 58:35my favorite content in the game and I think.
- 58:39Yeah, because is the best thing in the game, yeah.
- 58:41Yeah, I'll die on that hill for sure.
- 58:43Yeah. The I guess from a more
- 58:47completionist thing because like you can look at collection log,
- 58:50but collection log like filling that out is it would take 30
- 58:54years, but the. Yeah, collection log I think is
- 58:59a bit too much. Yeah, Yeah, I think in what I've
- 59:01seen. Achievement Diary Cape would
- 59:03probably be like the perfect completionist goal to eventually
- 59:08go for it down the line. Like it's still a really tough
- 59:10thing to get, but definitely doable.
- 59:12Yes, I've actually started doing them a little bit.
- 59:14So I completed Varick easy, Lumbridge easy, Karend easy,
- 59:20Karamja easy and Ardo easy. So I I was going to get all of
- 59:25them done on easy and then move on to medium.
- 59:28And and this is what's so beautiful about the spider web
- 59:31of the game, because a lot of these achievement Diaries
- 59:34requires certain quests or certain skills.
- 59:37So you're kind of like progressing everything at the
- 59:39same time. That's why it's hard to say like
- 59:41I'm going to focus one thing because usually one thing also
- 59:45touches on like three other things exactly.
- 59:48You you choose one thing, but then you end up playing the
- 59:51whole whole game. Yeah, yeah.
- 59:54Everything, everything works together really well if they've
- 59:56done a really good job at balancing everything.
- 1:00:00So I guess that being said. Obviously you're thinking to
- 1:00:05keep old school a part of this kind of big library of games
- 1:00:10that you regularly play in stream.
- 1:00:12Gotcha. Yeah, for sure it's something
- 1:00:14that I want to continue coming back to.
- 1:00:16And I, I think collection log is the only thing that I have not
- 1:00:20tried to progress at all. Yeah, but yeah, achievement
- 1:00:24Diaries, quests, skills in general, all of that.
- 1:00:28And sometimes I check out some mini games as well, especially
- 1:00:34if they help towards any of my skills, like I really wanted to
- 1:00:38work on farming, for example. And I then discovered, what is
- 1:00:43it? How do you pronounce it?
- 1:00:45Teeth. Teeth.
- 1:00:48Yeah. And now I've been playing that
- 1:00:51on my iPad and it actually works really well.
- 1:00:54So I, I was able to push my farming because my farming was
- 1:00:56really low. It was really bad.
- 1:00:58But now with that, I managed to push it a little bit.
- 1:01:01So now I have a way to like progress that which feels like
- 1:01:07smooth and easy to do. So, yeah, because I think
- 1:01:12there's some skills which I'm like, OK, what am I supposed to
- 1:01:16do here? And sometimes you unlock certain
- 1:01:18things, which makes it easy to push it forward.
- 1:01:21Yeah, I guess you kind of like make your own paths, like
- 1:01:24through the skills. Like you have one goal and it
- 1:01:26kind of like basically tells you the.
- 1:01:29Path to take. Through the other ones, yeah.
- 1:01:31Yeah, yeah. Sometimes that could be
- 1:01:33overwhelming, but most of the time if the goal isn't too
- 1:01:35crazy, it's, it's a pretty clear path of like what to do next
- 1:01:39sort of thing. And it's always nice, especially
- 1:01:41as like an Iron Man, finding the most efficient or at least a
- 1:01:46little bit of efficient way of getting to where you need to be.
- 1:01:49It's I guess what makes playing single player so fun.
- 1:01:53But that's that's awesome that you've got like goals in mind
- 1:01:56and you're going to, you're going to keep at it.
- 1:01:57It's it's really nice to see the the Wow players like pretty
- 1:02:02content on on keeping old school a part of their their library of
- 1:02:06games that they play. And even if it's not on stream,
- 1:02:09you know, just having it a part of their gaming life a little
- 1:02:13bit so. Oh yeah yeah I play on my iPad
- 1:02:17whenever I when I'm just like when I'm not streaming, I just
- 1:02:20have it on my iPad can work on the farming or just like
- 1:02:24chopping some logs if I need more wood.
- 1:02:26I think I have like 1000 Willow logs right now.
- 1:02:29So I'm I'm just like doing like little bits of farming here and
- 1:02:32there. I I don't do anything I would
- 1:02:35obviously not do any questing off stream and I also don't
- 1:02:39discover new content off stream like new areas or new anything.
- 1:02:43I don't do that. I also wouldn't do anything that
- 1:02:46requires combat because I'm hardcore.
- 1:02:48So I, I wouldn't want to accidentally die off stream.
- 1:02:51Yeah, that would suck. Yeah, that would suck.
- 1:02:53So I'm, I'm like doing safe things off stream, just like a
- 1:02:58little bit of pushing a few skills here and there.
- 1:03:01That's good. That's a that's a good way to
- 1:03:03kind of treat old school in the background.
- 1:03:05I think it's it's nice that it can have a place like that of
- 1:03:08just this. I guess the the funniest way
- 1:03:11that I had it put because I've been on my group Iron Man, just
- 1:03:17chopping away at yew trees for like actually two months now and
- 1:03:22Floodin has told me that it has become my my idol animation.
- 1:03:27Like how old ladies knit, like how they're just sitting in a
- 1:03:30corner in a rocking chair knitting.
- 1:03:31That's me on this game. Just.
- 1:03:33Chopping. Trees.
- 1:03:35And I was like, that's a perfect way of looking at it because
- 1:03:37that's that's seriously what it is.
- 1:03:38Like it's just this comforting, like casual thing to just have
- 1:03:43going on. So it's, it's a, it's a great
- 1:03:47kind of system for that. But I guess to to kind of wrap
- 1:03:51things up since we've been, we've been talking for so long,
- 1:03:52I don't want to keep you here too much longer, but.
- 1:03:55Yeah, no worries. The most important question of
- 1:03:58this whole interview What would you rate Old School Runescape
- 1:04:02out of 10? Oh God I hate rating things.
- 1:04:09Yeah, that's why. That's why I'm asking it.
- 1:04:11That's a terrible question. I'm going to rate it very
- 1:04:17serious, 69 out of 10. 69 out of 10.
- 1:04:21OK. Yeah.
- 1:04:22I don't know if that's going to help my averaging out of
- 1:04:25everyone's answers, but I'll figure that out, I guess.
- 1:04:29I just you just got to put the numbers together.
- 1:04:32Yeah, Sardaco's answer was actually really interesting of
- 1:04:35the fact that the rating of old school can change depending on
- 1:04:41like everyone has potential to make it a 10.
- 1:04:43Essentially you just have to set the game up right for yourself.
- 1:04:46Like if you're somebody who enjoys playing a single player
- 1:04:50kind of blind mode, you know, playing Iron Man without quest
- 1:04:54helper on. Or if you're someone who.
- 1:04:55I see what you mean. Enjoys the efficiency like
- 1:04:58toggling on the quest helper and you know, looking up the guides.
- 1:05:01So I think the play style of everybody is a huge factor into
- 1:05:06what everyone would rate it. I think that was a pretty
- 1:05:09insightful way to look at things, and it may a lot.
- 1:05:12Of sense that is actually a really good answer.
- 1:05:14Yeah, No, because I I agree, you can, you can play this in so
- 1:05:17many ways. And I think sometimes that's the
- 1:05:19mistake that people make because they, they might go in and go
- 1:05:22for, I don't know, let's say they go for PvP focus, but then
- 1:05:27they actually don't really enjoy PvP And now they're like stuck
- 1:05:31doing something that they don't like, But and then they might
- 1:05:34end up quitting. And it's like, hey, but did you
- 1:05:36know that there's this other thing that actually makes more
- 1:05:39sense for your personality? So yeah, that's true.
- 1:05:42Like he, that person might have been like, this is a 5 out of
- 1:05:4510. But then, if they had tried the
- 1:05:46thing that's actually for them, they might have been a 10 out of
- 1:05:4910. Exactly.
- 1:05:50Yeah, some people, I mean, I guess there's a reason that
- 1:05:53there's like AD iron option in the game too, you know, it's so
- 1:05:57you never know if you're going to like the the game play down
- 1:05:59the road. Like you might like the mid game
- 1:06:01and then not really enjoy the end game as a single player sort
- 1:06:04of thing. So yeah, I guess it really just
- 1:06:07doesn't. You can.
- 1:06:07Remove it right? You're not stuck with it.
- 1:06:09Yeah, you can remove it. You can remove your.
- 1:06:11Yeah, which is really good. Yeah.
- 1:06:13One of the reasons, or the main reason was that why I chose to
- 1:06:16play like hardcore and Iron Man was because there is no loss,
- 1:06:21right? Because if you play hardcore and
- 1:06:22Wow, you lose your character. Yeah.
- 1:06:24So initially I was saying, no, I'm not gonna play hardcore
- 1:06:27because I actually want to experience the full game.
- 1:06:29But then people told me if you die, you can just continue.
- 1:06:32And I was like, oh, that's so convenient.
- 1:06:35And then of course, I'm going to go for it.
- 1:06:37Yeah. And then if I, if I feel
- 1:06:39eventually that going Iron Man is getting ridiculous, I could
- 1:06:44always remove that as well. For now, it feels fine because
- 1:06:48part of wanting to skill up everything kind of means that I
- 1:06:52have access to everything as well.
- 1:06:53Because the the nice thing with not playing hard Iron Man is
- 1:06:58that people could give me things, right?
- 1:07:00So if I'm trying to like, if I'm trying to level up my like my
- 1:07:04smithing, then people could just give me bars.
- 1:07:07But I need to work on my mining anyways.
- 1:07:10So for now, it's there's no real loss of trying to do it myself.
- 1:07:16But maybe sometime in the future I'll be like, you know what?
- 1:07:18I am sick of mining and my mining is already 99, but my
- 1:07:23smithing is like behind so I'm just I'm done.
- 1:07:27I'm going to de iron. I need help Please give me bars.
- 1:07:30I don't know so like that option is there, which is which is nice
- 1:07:34definitely, but I think playing Iron Man, I think makes the game
- 1:07:37feel more a bit more quality. I don't know.
- 1:07:42It makes it makes it feel more like everything that you do
- 1:07:46truly matters. Whereas if you're given things,
- 1:07:49I think it simplifies certain hurdles that might make you more
- 1:07:54likely to then lose interest because if you've worked hard on
- 1:07:57something then it it's more meaningful to you.
- 1:08:00Yeah, yeah, Iron Man definitely makes every inch of progress
- 1:08:05feel meaningful. Like no matter what you're
- 1:08:07doing, like, every step you take on your character has meaning it
- 1:08:10feels like. Exactly.
- 1:08:12Definitely a good way to go about it.
- 1:08:15But yeah, I think, I mean, that's all I have for my
- 1:08:19questions. Is there anything else like old
- 1:08:21school related that you wanted to talk about it all?
- 1:08:25I, I don't know, I, I could just keep talking about all the
- 1:08:29things that we've already been saying, but yeah, no, I, I think
- 1:08:33the game is, I think it's an incredible game and I'm, I'm
- 1:08:36really glad that this sort of like hype around it happened so
- 1:08:39I could hop into it properly too and play a lot.
- 1:08:44Now I, I really understand why people enjoy the game.
- 1:08:48And I also now have a game that I can always, you know, get
- 1:08:53into. And it's funny you mentioned the
- 1:08:55housing being a thing since like 2006 or something.
- 1:08:58I, I feel like Runescape even, and it's like classic state
- 1:09:02feels so full because when you look at classic Wow and compare
- 1:09:06it to retail, there's so many things in classic Wow, which is
- 1:09:09so broken and like a weird, whereas this one feels full in
- 1:09:15in many ways, like you have the housing already.
- 1:09:17You have you have so many things that you can play around with
- 1:09:21and it just makes it such a good experience to to be able to see
- 1:09:28what everyone else has been playing.
- 1:09:30Yeah, the depth of it is all really nice.
- 1:09:33Like there's just so much to experience, just no matter how
- 1:09:38many hours you put into it, you feel like there's always
- 1:09:39something new, something you haven't approached yet.
- 1:09:42So it's. Yeah, and so many different
- 1:09:44things to do too. Yeah, definitely.
- 1:09:48Cool. Well, Annie, thank you so much
- 1:09:51for taking this much time to. Thank you.
- 1:09:53Talk with me about everything this was.
- 1:09:54This was a lot of fun. Yeah, it's pretty fun.
- 1:09:56I really hope that you stick with the goals and everyone gets
- 1:10:01to watch you get a quest Cape because that would be cool.
- 1:10:05Guideless question. Yeah, that would be the big
- 1:10:08goal. Yeah, yes, I agree.
- 1:10:10Need to get one of those. Yeah, yeah, you do get one of
- 1:10:13those. Thank you so much again to Annie
- 1:10:15for finding the time to do this. She did this right after
- 1:10:17streaming and I know how brutal doing literally anything as a
- 1:10:21human can be right after streaming.
- 1:10:23So I really appreciate that and I hope you guys enjoyed
- 1:10:26listening to it. All of Annies links are down
- 1:10:28below. Make sure to go check out her
- 1:10:30twitch say hello over there. Her YouTube subscribe to that.
- 1:10:34Why not show some support? It was awesome.
- 1:10:37Next episode's guest is a long time PvP uh, one of the most
- 1:10:41eccentric personalities I've ever come across on Twitch
- 1:10:44embodying a character across any game he plays.
- 1:10:47You might have heard whispers, maybe even shouts.
- 1:10:50Most likely shouts actually, of the the signature phrase bunkai.
- 1:10:56That's right ladies and gentlemen, we're talking with
- 1:10:57Shobeck. See you soon.
