- 1:10excited to welcome my returning guest, Sean Jordan.
- 1:14Hello. Thank you so much for having me.
- 1:16Movers are clutch. They they have to you.
- 1:19They have to exist. It's yes, when we moved, I
- 1:22didn't believe it. They, when they, when they came,
- 1:25I'm like, there's no way. There's no way they're going to
- 1:27take apart our bed, get it in this truck.
- 1:29They wrap it like Dexter kills people too.
- 1:31They just wrap everything up. And then they got it back to our
- 1:34new house. And I'm, I'm like, can you, I go
- 1:36to the guy who's like, are you really going to be able to put
- 1:37this together? And he laughed at me.
- 1:39And he goes, yeah, we'll figure it out.
- 1:40Five minutes would have taken me days.
- 1:42Yeah, that's The thing is like it feels like, Oh my God, it's
- 1:46going to be so long. Like if I were to do it with my
- 1:50friends would have taken me truly days.
- 1:53What takes professionals, I mean shock professionals, takes them
- 1:56like a couple hours. Maybe $400.00.
- 1:59Yeah, top three best times I've spent money was the movers
- 2:04engagement ring was I got to say top.
- 2:06I don't know what number 2 is. Maybe, I don't know, maybe.
- 2:10Something fun, maybe. IVF.
- 2:12Yeah. Yeah, sure.
- 2:13Damn, I forgot about our miracle.
- 2:14Yes. IVF.
- 2:16Wedding ring. IVF and then movers.
- 2:17And then movers. That's pretty good company.
- 2:18That is a that's pretty good. That's.
- 2:20What a oh, go ahead, I'm sorry. Oh, just that's top three.
- 2:23That's. That's pretty big deal.
- 2:25What movie did we do last time? I always forget.
- 2:27OK, so. We've done this twice.
- 2:29We've done this. OK, so we talked about, we
- 2:34talked about Sleepless in Seattle last time.
- 2:36It's the other one of my plane movies.
- 2:38Good. And then way back, early days of
- 2:41the podcast, this must have been like five years ago, we talked
- 2:43about Clueless. OK Clueless holds up sleepless
- 2:47in Seattle. I did just watch it like 5 days
- 2:50ago. Were you on a plane?
- 2:51I was. I watch it that in The Notebook
- 2:52and The Departed that I have like 7 flight movies but they'd
- 2:57make fun of women a little too much in Sleepless in Seattle.
- 3:01It was up the time and they're not, there's no malice when they
- 3:04did it, but they do the whole then you know, women are like
- 3:09this and the chick flicks. That was the only thing.
- 3:11Other than that it's like, yeah, I think 'cause the last time I
- 3:15think it felt stalkerish, but I'm like, no, I don't.
- 3:17She just, she just liked the dude and she didn't do anything
- 3:21crazy. No one did anything that that,
- 3:24frankly, I wouldn't do. Yeah.
- 3:26And so if I think that's crazy, then I got to take a look in the
- 3:29mirror. You know what I'm saying?
- 3:30Right. It's, it's the equivalent kind
- 3:33of of just finding someone's Instagram profile without them
- 3:36giving it to you. That's all she did.
- 3:38She just found stuff about the guy.
- 3:40And how boring would a movie be about someone sliding into
- 3:42someone's Instagram DMS? That's why I thank God that made
- 3:45that movie when they did, you know?
- 3:48Yeah, it is funny watching these movies before phones.
- 3:51Oh my God, the in this movie and swingers when he's like, I have
- 3:56a calling card, I've got a card, I've got a card.
- 3:58When he checks his, he. Wants to check his messages to.
- 4:01See if she called iconic. I remember doing that one with
- 4:04my middle school to high school girlfriend where I would just
- 4:08always want her to have called and left a message and the the
- 4:11heartbreak when she didn't. And this is my this was my
- 4:14current girlfriend realized she didn't like me all that much at
- 4:17the time, but. That's tough, but every time you
- 4:19thought maybe this time will be different?
- 4:22Yeah, and it was until I met my wife.
- 4:24That's that's what I thought every single time.
- 4:26Absolutely. But yeah, that calling card
- 4:28stuff man, I you forget about these how it used to be.
- 4:31Oh yeah. And then what would they you
- 4:34think now? Like what would they do in a
- 4:35movie like swingers with social media?
- 4:38He would have found her online and then instead of him calling
- 4:41like the when he calls that girl and leaves 6 messages, instead
- 4:45of that he would have sent her just a ton of DMS and that would
- 4:49have been the equivalent. And that would have been so
- 4:51boring in a movie. You know, unless he's like
- 4:54saying it as he's typing it out, which people don't really do
- 4:57unless they're with their friends and they're like, hey,
- 4:59can I run this by you? It is one of those, it's one of
- 5:02those things in movies they have to do it just to get.
- 5:05But it's like, no, I've never in my whole life have I read
- 5:09something out loud to my, like, Adm to myself.
- 5:12Yeah, that's crazy. That's crazy.
- 5:14And I certainly don't read them to other.
- 5:16I don't know. But it is one of those things or
- 5:18like, yeah, like when they're writing letter and I've never
- 5:23dear Laura, I've never done that.
- 5:25I never will. Unless she's in the room.
- 5:28Then it would be funny. I was writing her a letter.
- 5:30And then, dear Laura, I love you so much.
- 5:34Dinner was so good. I wish I knew how to cook.
- 5:37I'll see you in our bedroom. And then you look up at her
- 5:40smile, then kind of slide it across.
- 5:43The door. Light the letter on fire.
- 5:44Walk out the door. I'll be back when I feel like
- 5:47it. Yeah, I love that.
- 5:48I'm stepping on the structure. I'm talking about this movie you
- 5:50got. We have a structure, so don't
- 5:52let me impede. No, no, no, that's OK Structure
- 5:54is a really, I think that's a really generous word for this
- 5:57podcast. I'm curious what what made you
- 6:02choose the movie swingers? I know you've seen it a bunch,
- 6:05but like, what's your history with this movie?
- 6:07My history with this movie is really interesting.
- 6:09So Swingers and The Big Lebowski, my dad showed up one
- 6:14day and he just had those movies and he goes, hey, we need to
- 6:18watch these. He rented them.
- 6:20I was when did this come out? 9496 So I was 14 and I had just
- 6:26started skating. Maybe I was 15, but I just
- 6:28started skateboarding. I didn't.
- 6:30I did not want to sit and watch these movies at all.
- 6:33And we watched them both back-to-back.
- 6:34No way. Yeah, and watching them
- 6:36immediately, I was, I just thought, man, this is what a
- 6:39good idea this was for you to make me watch these movies.
- 6:42I didn't quite grasp. I thought they were, I thought
- 6:46it was supposed to be like a period piece of the 50s when I
- 6:48was so young because they were all, I didn't put together that
- 6:52they were in current Los Angeles, 90s Los Angeles, but
- 6:55they were just these 50s guys. Even though most of the other
- 6:59people in the movie, like when they run into those, those other
- 7:02guys, they're clearly not in the 50s.
- 7:03They're like 90s gangster guys. But if you're like 14 or 15, you
- 7:06don't know what's going on. So that was kind of because I
- 7:09think the cover was a little bit of a deterrent because to me, I
- 7:11thought it was this, like Frank Sinatra sort of, yeah, I'm not
- 7:15gonna dig this movie. But then we watched it,
- 7:18immediately fell in love with Vince Vaughn.
- 7:19How could you not? Right.
- 7:20He's so lovable in this movie. So charming.
- 7:23I mean, it made it, it gave him a career.
- 7:25He would have got a career otherwise.
- 7:26But. Yeah, but it launched him.
- 7:28And then, yeah, my dad started saying baby all the time.
- 7:31It didn't work. It didn't work with him.
- 7:33He started saying I was money all the time.
- 7:35Didn't work. That also doesn't work, but.
- 7:37Yeah, I immediately fell in love with the movie.
- 7:40And then all through high school complete, you know, Friday
- 7:43night, all the dudes put on swingers.
- 7:45Go to the video store, Yeah. I mean, this was an early
- 7:48purchase for sure. This was we didn't have to go
- 7:51rent this. Oh, yeah.
- 7:52Oh, yeah. You were just saying these are,
- 7:53this is one of the two that your dad was like, I got this.
- 7:56Yeah, yeah, Yep. He loved it.
- 7:58And same thing with pickle basketball.
- 8:00We're not talking about that, but yeah, that was my that was
- 8:02kind of my intro to swingers. Yeah.
- 8:03And you and you still watch it regularly.
- 8:08If I'm not trying to lie, I bet I watch swingers twice a year.
- 8:12Nice. Probably not all the way through
- 8:15yeah, most movies they like the third act.
- 8:19It doesn't lose me, but if I know it so well, 'cause the by
- 8:22the time you're in the third act, most of the iconic scenes,
- 8:27yeah, have kind of gone through. Maybe I'm wrong, but.
- 8:30No, I think that's fair to say. I think, well, the swing dancing
- 8:33scene to me is the most iconic and that's in the third act.
- 8:37However, the rest of the most iconic scenes probably in the
- 8:41first two acts. Yeah, the, but I mean, I, I do
- 8:46watch it. I try to watch it all the way.
- 8:48If not, I stop it just a little bit early, but the beginning all
- 8:51the way. You know, 6th sevenths of the
- 8:55movie, yeah. I watch, Yeah, totally.
- 8:57And you? Unlike me, you are a man and you
- 9:01have lived in LA. Do you feel like this captures?
- 9:04I went to the Dresden. I mean, I it it to me, it feels
- 9:07like yes, it especially it's just of the time, but everybody
- 9:12driving their own car. Yeah, everything being so far
- 9:16away, everything being crowded as hell, everything being
- 9:19shitty, everyone being fake. I'm not not saying that is Los
- 9:24Angeles, but that's a that's part of Los Angeles is like
- 9:26you'll go my limited experience with going to, I don't know,
- 9:31house parties and stuff. You would get that like this
- 9:34thing walk in and people do that and everybody could be someone.
- 9:38You never know, like I could have been on The Big Bang theory
- 9:41at some point. You never know.
- 9:42So just that it felt pretty accurate and it's so hard to
- 9:47meet people. Yeah, what are?
- 9:48You going to just walk up to let me ask you this, have you ever
- 9:52just walked up to someone and and hit on them?
- 9:54Only if it was like we're in a contained space where I'm like,
- 9:59I know someone who knows that person, you know what I mean?
- 10:01Where it's like I'm at a house party or something like that.
- 10:05Just the cold. A cold walk up at a bar seems
- 10:09batshit to me. I'm like, couldn't, I'm there
- 10:12normally I'm there to drink. I'm I've never been one where
- 10:15I'm it. My goal was to go meet someone.
- 10:18What's happened? Sure, 'cause you're you happen
- 10:20to be standing next to someone instead of making it look like
- 10:24you happened. Never been like, oh, look at
- 10:26that girl across the bar. She's looking at me.
- 10:28Yeah, there's no, I can't. So that like, that's another fun
- 10:32part of the movie is you get to vicariously live through these
- 10:34people who do that successfully. And then you also see the real
- 10:40version, which is Mikey, Jon Favreau, right?
- 10:42The realistic version where you like.
- 10:44That's what I would be like. Of course I wouldn't be like
- 10:46Trent or Sue, no. Absolutely not.
- 10:49They're so those two characters, despite also being kind of like
- 10:54down bad in their own way, are so aspirational.
- 10:57Whereas I think Mike is the one that, like the every man, is
- 11:01supposed to relate to him. And Ron, you know?
- 11:04Like is his name in the movie Ron?
- 11:05Ron Livingston? Oh.
- 11:06It's Rob, Rob, Rob. Yeah, easy mix up.
- 11:09But they look, they also look normal.
- 11:11Vince Vaughn and whatever Sue's name is are.
- 11:14Gorgeous Van Horn. He kind of fell off the map,
- 11:16never really saw him again. They're gorgeous.
- 11:18They're they look like models that Sue Patrick Van Horn has
- 11:21those like puffy lips. He just looks, you know, a boy
- 11:25named he just has the vibe Favreau attractive and he's also
- 11:29a real buff in this movie. He's buff, but him and Ron
- 11:31Livingston look a little more like your average kind of.
- 11:34And they even dress. Ron Livingston just looks.
- 11:38It's like golf shorts or whatever.
- 11:39Totally. Yeah, they, they're a little bit
- 11:41more normal. They're a little bit more like
- 11:43relatable, I think, especially for most young people living in
- 11:46LA, being like, what am I doing here?
- 11:49Like pretending like they love it a lot of the time.
- 11:52But then like when you get to know them a little bit better,
- 11:54they're like, actually, I haven't been booked in months.
- 11:59It's a scary place. I mean, I moved there when I was
- 12:02old, 36, so a little different. There's no, you know, I'm not
- 12:07young. I didn't have the I didn't have
- 12:09the energy that a 22 year old would have if they moved there,
- 12:12a 19 year old. But to to the point like
- 12:15swingers getting Lai went to the Dresden immediately because
- 12:19that's right. It's just it was one of the
- 12:22first times where I saw this bar in a movie and then I'm walking
- 12:25down Vermont. I think it's Vermont in Los
- 12:27Vegas, and it's just there's the Dresden.
- 12:29And you're like, I got to go. In Ayanna was like, that can't
- 12:31be it right? And all my friends go, yeah,
- 12:33that's that's well, where else that's it, says the Dresden.
- 12:36So I thought it was a set or whatever.
- 12:39And then that that golf course in Los Feliz, that three putt,
- 12:42that's right across the street from this place.
- 12:45It's called the Roost that we always used to go to.
- 12:46Oh nice, that's awesome. Griffith Park hiked in Griffith.
- 12:50That was one of those things too.
- 12:51But Oh yeah, yeah, it was. Seemed pretty accurate version
- 12:54of LA. Yeah, totally.
- 12:55It felt like when they were talking about the like how every
- 13:00cool bar is like in a weird location with no sign you.
- 13:04Got to know about it you. Got to know someone if.
- 13:06You tell a girl you've been somewhere.
- 13:08It's almost like you're bragging that you know how to get there.
- 13:10Exactly. Yeah.
- 13:11They're like, it's like Speakeasy vibes.
- 13:13I'm like, Oh my gosh. So.
- 13:16And they walk in, they go down that alley and walk in and it's
- 13:18just shoulder to shoulder, which that's something in my old age.
- 13:22I just don't fuck that. I don't have the We were doing
- 13:25that last night. We were at this bar after a
- 13:27show, and my friend Shane, he goes, let's just go across the
- 13:31street where no one's there and have some room, you know?
- 13:34Just some room to breathe, room to talk, you know?
- 13:37I yeah, I can't. I don't got it in me anymore.
- 13:39Yeah, totally. I, I remember feeling like, oh,
- 13:42I am turning into my mom when I was in this like really crowded
- 13:45bar and I was trying to have a conversation with my friend and
- 13:48I said, God, I can't even think in here.
- 13:52Then that's what happens. You know I.
- 13:53Don't want to stand up? Call me crazy.
- 13:55I don't want to stand up that long.
- 13:57I'd like to have. A seat, I want to sit down.
- 13:59I don't want my butt to sweat. I want to know there's a
- 14:02bathroom that I, that I can like get to.
- 14:04That's enough that all this stuff is me being old, but I get
- 14:07sweaty. I get sweaty If I'm just
- 14:10standing, I get stressed and I'm like, I don't want to be
- 14:11uncomfortable. I want to sit down and I don't
- 14:14want to have to pee most of the time.
- 14:16I want to be able to go to. That's another thing about these
- 14:19crowded bars. You just can't go to the
- 14:20bathroom. There's.
- 14:21Nowhere to pee. There's nowhere to pee.
- 14:23And that means like, especially if you're in LA, it's like, OK,
- 14:26well, it's going to take 30 minutes to get there at least.
- 14:29And so you're going to have to pee at home.
- 14:31And you're like, OK, well, I guess I'm not going to pee for
- 14:33another six hours, you know? Oh, God.
- 14:37Well, one thing that I think should be said right off the bat
- 14:41is that I got a lot of info from the oral history called So Money
- 14:46by Alex French and Howie Con, which was written in 2014, which
- 14:50is an interesting time to read the oral history because it was
- 14:53before the public really knew about Harvey Weinstein being
- 14:57like. Was he involved in this movie?
- 14:59Yeah, so he was. He was the Miramax guy.
- 15:02So when? That's right, yeah.
- 15:03So he wasn't involved in the making of the movie, but he was
- 15:06the one who who bought the movie, distributed it.
- 15:11Probably had his greasy little hands all over it.
- 15:13His greasy little paws all over. A bummer.
- 15:16Yeah, I know. So that is a bummer.
- 15:18So there is a lot in the oral history about like, you know,
- 15:20the impact of Miramax, which I mean, the reality is that
- 15:24Miramax distributed and made a lot of incredible movies.
- 15:29A lot of movies for young men, for sure.
- 15:31If you were a young boy, yeah, they were.
- 15:34Yeah. They really hit home for me.
- 15:36Miramax did. I mean, that was all for sure.
- 15:38The Kevin Smith movies. Right.
- 15:39Yeah, Yeah. And like all of those like mid
- 15:42late 90s, early 2000s indie movies that were like, so cool.
- 15:48Those movies where I got my first where what's I remember
- 15:52like the squid and the whale. This wasn't Miramax, but it's a
- 15:54it's a movie where I went in and I I rented it and I'm like, I
- 15:58don't even know if I saw anything about it.
- 16:00Right. It just looked indie.
- 16:01You totally. You're like, I went and rented
- 16:03it. Cool.
- 16:04Look, I'm set it down that like Running with Scissors, The Kite
- 16:07Runner. There were all these movies.
- 16:11Youth in Revolt was another one. Anyway, So yeah, Miramax did
- 16:15swingers. Yeah, they they were definitely
- 16:19like we're the cool guys, we're gonna buy the cool guy movies.
- 16:23But the the making of this film I think is he's one of the
- 16:28things that makes it hold up the best because everyone from the
- 16:33outside thought these guys were so stupid for making this movie
- 16:38on $200,000. Yeah, so cheap.
- 16:41So cheap. Favreau wrote it right, and
- 16:43Lyman Doug Lyman directed it. Was it Doug Lyman?
- 16:45Yeah, Doug Lyman directed it. Favreau wrote it in like a week
- 16:48and 1/2 his dad gave him software for screen writing and
- 16:54he was like, I'm going to just kind of play around with this
- 16:57and write what I think a screenplay would be.
- 17:00And then he came out with this. It was like drawn a lot from his
- 17:04own personal experience. A lot of the characters are
- 17:06based on his own friends. And then of course, like the
- 17:10house party, there's no extras. They just threw a house party
- 17:13with all their friends. Did they really?
- 17:15Did you found that out? I didn't know that.
- 17:17Yeah, they. Seems like it.
- 17:19It seems like that's what was going on.
- 17:20Right. Yeah, and some of the people at
- 17:22the house party were Mike White, Adam Scott, like a bunch of
- 17:26people who are now, like, interesting, a big deal.
- 17:28They were all just like buddies. There's a.
- 17:30Scene in Superbad, if you look where they're at the party where
- 17:33the girl dances on Jonah Hills die and leaves blood on his
- 17:36thigh. Oh yeah.
- 17:37But if you look in the background, it's all like Danny
- 17:39McBride. They're all.
- 17:40Yeah. I like that stuff.
- 17:42I like when you can see that it's kind of all in the family.
- 17:45Yeah, it's sort of like that with stand up tune.
- 17:47I've been lucky enough to be included on the outside of a lot
- 17:51of some of those groups where you, like, can't believe I'm
- 17:54even in the room with these people.
- 17:55So it is. Yeah.
- 17:56That's cool. It's fun to see that.
- 17:57Yeah. And then to see everybody branch
- 17:59out and know that they were all so talented at the time, they
- 18:02just didn't get their shot yet. Totally.
- 18:04But that's yeah, that's the fun thing is like seeing someone and
- 18:07being like, Oh my God, you didn't even know that you were
- 18:09going to be such a big deal. Like Mike White wrote, he wrote
- 18:13Chuck and Buck after he saw Swingers and like, you know, was
- 18:18a part of being on the, you know, kind of on the outskirts
- 18:21on it, 'cause he was like, oh, I guess you can just kind of make
- 18:24a movie about people doing stuff and not really that much is
- 18:28happening, but a lot is happening, like under the
- 18:30surface, you know what I mean? Absolutely sorry.
- 18:32No, no, no worries. But also Speaking of like the
- 18:37extras, they shot all of the bar scenes just like at the bar,
- 18:44like those were just like real bar patrons.
- 18:47And so they had to just use the lighting from the bar, like
- 18:52house lighting didn't like didn't bring anything extra
- 18:55because they didn't want to like make people scatter.
- 18:58They needed people to be there like actually drinking,
- 19:01interacting with each other. And they shot it on this
- 19:05documentary style camera on on leftover film like this.
- 19:13It was like not designed sound wise for dialogue.
- 19:16So they like put these like jackets and comforters over the
- 19:21camera and just kind of like. That guerrilla filmmaking stuff,
- 19:25it's so fun. It's so fun.
- 19:27And it, yeah, like, it shouldn't have.
- 19:29It shouldn't have worked, you know?
- 19:31But you watch it and it's just so immediately classic.
- 19:36And again, most of that is Vince Vaughn.
- 19:39Just the charisma flying out of that man when in the.
- 19:43I forget like the right away when he's in his kitchen,
- 19:46Favreau's in his kitchen and Vince is like, we're going to
- 19:49Vegas, baby, because I'm not going to Vegas.
- 19:51Can I talk now? You pick out something nice to
- 19:54wear and it's you can just tell you're like, I want I want to
- 19:57see this guy in Vegas. Oh my God.
- 19:59Yeah. And that's what hooks you is
- 20:00when they. Right when they get to Vegas and
- 20:02they Vince Vaughn immediately just starts throwing like
- 20:05they're going to give daddy the Rain Man, sweet, he's going to
- 20:07Daddy's going to pull a Fredo. I don't care if I end up with
- 20:09her, one of her beautiful baby friends, all these things.
- 20:12And he doesn't I guess to the point, does it hold up?
- 20:14He doesn't to me. He doesn't seem smarmy.
- 20:17He just seems like somebody who is actively trying to have sex
- 20:22in a very consensual way. And they do.
- 20:26They again, it's like of the time they do when he's like
- 20:30talking about girls, like they're an injured young fawn or
- 20:32things like that. And that's slimy.
- 20:36But it didn't feel that way. It didn't feel like they
- 20:38weren't. He didn't have like testosterone
- 20:42radiating out of his body or anything.
- 20:44He was just kind of talking that way.
- 20:46Right. It seems like he was really
- 20:48trying to. He was trying to woo women but
- 20:52not manipulate them like the women really are.
- 20:56I mean, to their credit, they give the women some smarts.
- 20:59Like they're always like smarter, like a step ahead than
- 21:03the men who are hitting on them. But I think that there were a
- 21:07few things like that that kind of made me pause.
- 21:10Like, I mean, I love the the jaws thing when they're like.
- 21:14Sure, but that's the way that they use it.
- 21:15But. That's also like.
- 21:17You don't want to feel like you're prey, like you're
- 21:19literally. Prey, yeah, like, yeah, it
- 21:22definitely it's not subtle and like the I'm a predator kind of.
- 21:26It's hard to look at these things as I'm.
- 21:29I'm so old. I like, I just, I'm constantly
- 21:32trying to get better. I feel like, yeah, just part of
- 21:34when I grew up. My wife always tells she's like,
- 21:36this is a movie for guys. And I'm like, Oh yeah, you're
- 21:38right. The woman hasn't said a word in
- 21:40an hour. And I just miss that all the
- 21:43time, so I try. So I was going to ask you like,
- 21:45as a woman, how do you feel about that?
- 21:47Or like when he hits on the girl and then tears up her number is
- 21:50that is that him being like a shitty guy or is that just him
- 21:55showing off? Well, I think that he was kind
- 21:57of trying to show off to his friends, but I think more than
- 22:01the ripping of the number was that he was like, oh, she's what
- 22:06do they call her? Like business class?
- 22:08That was what I was like, OK, that's that's fucked up.
- 22:11The fact that she was annoying and like wouldn't stop yapping
- 22:16about some bullshit. I'm like, OK, yeah, I wouldn't
- 22:19want to talk to her either. But then when it was like, oh,
- 22:22well, that's not the reason. It's because she's got a big
- 22:25butt. It's like that part to me.
- 22:27I was like, Dang, she really can't catch a break, you know?
- 22:31Yeah, so I always thought and because of this movie, I always
- 22:34thought business class. Wait, what do they say?
- 22:37Because. Let me.
- 22:38Because they say coach something.
- 22:40I always thought business class was bad because of that sentence
- 22:43in that movie. But business class is like first
- 22:44class right? Business, they're saying like
- 22:47she needs to buy a seat in business class because her butt.
- 22:50Doesn't fit in the right. She doesn't go in coach.
- 22:52Yeah, see, I get it. Yeah, yeah.
- 22:54So these are, those are the things because you, you can't
- 22:57deny your thoughts. A thought comes into your head.
- 23:00You can't. But they're the things that
- 23:01shouldn't necessarily come out, you know?
- 23:04Yes, the things that you when you say, oh, that was kind of my
- 23:07first instinct, but maybe I'm going to think critically about.
- 23:10This or you don't say it at the party, you know, you get home in
- 23:14confidence. I've heard, I've been in rooms
- 23:16with women, I've heard them say some pretty gnarly shit about
- 23:19guys, and I've heard guys say pretty, but you vent sometimes
- 23:23and something shallow like that you don't say at the party.
- 23:25You don't say it in front of all these people.
- 23:28You don't make a show of ripping up the number.
- 23:30You know, I didn't think that he was a bad guy because he didn't
- 23:32want to go on a date with this girl.
- 23:34You know, it was like he saw her from across the room.
- 23:36She was smoking a cigar, looking cool as fuck, frankly.
- 23:39And he's like, OK, well, I'm going to shoot my shot.
- 23:41And then after talking to her realize, oh, I actually don't
- 23:44like her personality. That's perfectly fine.
- 23:47But then when he's like ripping up the number, making a big show
- 23:50of it, and then talking about how her butt's too big for a
- 23:52regular airplane seat, that's when I'm like.
- 23:54Which, by the way, I bet you that woman weighed, Yeah, 90
- 23:58lbs. That was, yeah, even more than
- 24:00that. She was conventionally so thin.
- 24:04But The thing is so like Vince Vaughn proves in this movie
- 24:08through the whole thing that he is a good guy.
- 24:10This is what I this is what I wonder with because the
- 24:14womanizing would seem that he's not a good person, but he looks
- 24:18out for his friends so much. He seemingly he's not.
- 24:23I don't see him really be disrespectful to a woman in the
- 24:27room or anything. He just seems like a good guy.
- 24:29He like, you know, he avoids confrontation.
- 24:33I don't know, what do you think? Well, I think that there is.
- 24:36I agree that he is not explicitly disrespectful to
- 24:39women to their faces, but the way that they I feel really torn
- 24:44about the way that he's trying to explain to Mike how he how he
- 24:48plays his game, you know, like Mike is, you know, for the he's
- 24:54got his own faults too. He's like all the women here are
- 24:56nasty skanks which they I forgot.
- 24:59He's jaded from a breakup. He's jaded.
- 25:01He doesn't really think that. He's just trying to convince
- 25:03himself that he he doesn't want any of them because deep down he
- 25:06doesn't think he can get any. Exactly so he's putting them
- 25:10down so that he doesn't have to be like rejected, which I get
- 25:14you know, we've all we've we've all been there right I.
- 25:18Don't want to get booked in Phoenix, whatever.
- 25:19I don't. I don't even.
- 25:20I don't like the heat. I hate Phoenix.
- 25:22And then meanwhile if they book me, I'm like Phoenix fucking
- 25:24rules. Yeah.
- 25:24So you're like, I take it all back.
- 25:26That's, of course. That's what Mike he's doing and
- 25:27Vince is trying to help him out. Yeah, yeah, I think that he,
- 25:31there's some stuff that he says like, you know, you see how they
- 25:34dress when you go out. They don't want you to respect
- 25:37them. They want honesty.
- 25:39But. You can have both by the way
- 25:42you. Can you can.
- 25:43Definitely respect somebody and be honest at the same time.
- 25:45That makes me think like he sees himself not necessarily as like
- 25:49a good guy. He sees himself as like a
- 25:51winner. But it's, but it's hard to tell
- 25:54because a lot of that I think is just that like that peacocking
- 25:58of being in your 20s and being a guy trying to make it in LA, you
- 26:02know? And again, it's of the time.
- 26:04And also, like, comedies aren't supposed to be, they're
- 26:07definitely for the era. You know, all of these like
- 26:11raunchy early comedies, people give them shit.
- 26:13And it's like, well, it's not, it's not the Godfather.
- 26:16It's not supposed to hold up for 100 years.
- 26:19So there are those things. It's a time capsule.
- 26:22It just is how certain things were.
- 26:25So I try to. I try to think of that.
- 26:27Yeah, that's what I try to do. I mean, really, anytime I'm
- 26:30talking about a movie from especially this era, like the
- 26:3590s and early 2000s, to think about things in the context of
- 26:39when they were made to say, like, is this a reflection of
- 26:43the time? Was it ahead of its time?
- 26:45Was it dragging behind? And I think with this one, it
- 26:48was ahead of its time in the way that it showed this like
- 26:53tenderness and care among male friends.
- 26:58It was almost like, but at the same time, it was almost like a
- 27:01reverse Bechtel test where like so much of the movie, they are
- 27:05talking about women. We don't really see women a lot.
- 27:09We don't hear from women a lot. But like the whole thing is
- 27:12like. What is the Bechtel test again?
- 27:13It's like how much if there's like women talking in a movie,
- 27:18how much of the time are they talking about a man?
- 27:23And also like how much are they talking in general?
- 27:26Not a ton, I mean, because what are what does it start with?
- 27:30It's the first women we meet are the girls in Vegas, right?
- 27:34That are, I mean, there's women at the poker table or whatever,
- 27:36but the first like women we meet are the ones in Vegas and that
- 27:40that doesn't seem crazy one sided.
- 27:42They're just like having a trailer conversation, right?
- 27:45Totally, yeah. But one thing that I I did think
- 27:48was funny about that scene. What?
- 27:50I don't know, maybe, maybe I'm a little naive, but it seemed to
- 27:53me like such a male fantasy that like you would just find 2
- 27:58beautiful women who like want to have sex with you that easy.
- 28:03Of course, and that's the world they're trying to build.
- 28:05And again, that it is. It is funny though, because at
- 28:10least they have which it would suck to be the woman in this
- 28:13position. They're just two women at a bar,
- 28:16and when you walk up on them, they can't just be standing
- 28:20there having a drink by themselves.
- 28:21There were what, 30 guys, right? And the seas, pardon Vincent and
- 28:26Favreau walk up. But these girls were even like
- 28:29outward facing, as if to say, like, there's there's no way
- 28:32that we could just be here and just have a drink.
- 28:35Of course, we're like, if I went into a bar with 40 women, me and
- 28:38a buddy, we could easily just sit and have a drink.
- 28:41I'd like to think that we couldn't, but we could.
- 28:42We probably wouldn't get talked to you all night.
- 28:44You probably have a perfectly fine conversation.
- 28:47So that but that like I don't know if that would mean the
- 28:50movie doesn't hold up. Unfortunately, that is just a
- 28:53reality in in that sucks, but that is how it is.
- 28:58Probably if those two women did go to that bar, that's probably
- 29:01what would be happening. Doesn't make it OK, but that
- 29:04doesn't mean it's a bad scene in the right.
- 29:07Am I making? Sense No, I I totally agree.
- 29:08It's not like I'm not gonna hold Jon Favreau accountable for
- 29:13being like, you should have made sure that those women were
- 29:17having a conversation with each other and told those guys to go
- 29:21away. It would have been that would
- 29:23have been the and that a nice thing to see.
- 29:25Exactly. Yeah.
- 29:26Like, it would have been good if maybe they had just kind of put
- 29:30them, you know, humbled them a little bit.
- 29:32But I mean, Jon Favreau's character did humble himself
- 29:35when he called Nikki 15 times or whatever.
- 29:39And that's what that's what I like about Does it hold up is
- 29:43that he didn't make him. He made himself a huge mark in
- 29:48the movie. Like it.
- 29:49He's so heartbroken, and he sacrificed sex, having sex with
- 29:54a woman because he just couldn't do it.
- 29:55And then they end up talking and stops Vince Vaughn from having
- 29:58sex, which was great, too. And then they just make coffee
- 30:02and Vince is in that little robe.
- 30:04Oh, my God. And you know what's funny is
- 30:07I've never been, if it's ever happened where I have to stop
- 30:11having sex, Yeah, it's all it's like, all right, yeah, I've
- 30:15never been like, okay, it just, I don't know, maybe I got that
- 30:19low tea, but it never it. I've never been like, it's just
- 30:23like, yeah, all right, well. Next time you're like, well, I
- 30:25guess next time. We'll get him again.
- 30:26Yeah, totally. But, you know, in this case, it
- 30:29was sort of it was a once in a lifetime the opportunity in
- 30:33Vegas, you know, with this girl, he's never going to see her
- 30:36again. But surely, surely he's going to
- 30:39have sex again within the next three days.
- 30:41The handful of times I've been yeah, right, Vince Vaughn has no
- 30:44problem. But the handful of times I've
- 30:45been to Las Vegas, the thought of I've been married for all
- 30:49let's say I wasn't married, the thought of trying to meet a
- 30:53girl. It's a it's a everywhere.
- 30:55It feels like a basketball game just got out.
- 30:57It's. Absolutely.
- 30:58All madness and chaos, yeah. And if you did talk to a person,
- 31:04a girl, it's going to be a girl with 15 other people or
- 31:08something. If I if I saw someone by
- 31:10themselves, I'd be weirded out. I would think they were there,
- 31:12like leaving Las Vegas style or something.
- 31:14Absolutely. You'd be like.
- 31:16Or they're lost or they're on Molly or something and they just
- 31:18don't know what's going on. You're like, am I going to call
- 31:21an ambulance or am I going to call?
- 31:23Like, who are we going to call here?
- 31:24Yeah, yeah, totally. I think Vegas would be an
- 31:27impossible place to meet people. But you know what?
- 31:29I've seen, I've seen you know, no name, but I've seen it
- 31:32happen, friends of mine, and I'm like you good for that.
- 31:35You are cooler than the other side of the pillow.
- 31:37I don't know how that happened. I mean, it's that Vince Vaughn
- 31:40type. You know, here's the thing about
- 31:42Vince Vaughn that really kind of baffles me is that in this
- 31:47movie, in his early work, I found him to be so charming, so
- 31:51charismatic and hot. And then I think throughout his
- 31:55career he was just typecast as a bland man, and I haven't really
- 32:01felt dazzled by him in decades. Well, they so and again, this
- 32:07might go to the point of movies for for dudes, but the frat
- 32:11pack, you know, like him and Will Ferrell and Luke Wilson and
- 32:15Owen Wilson like that Vince Vaughn's like wedding singers
- 32:18and old school and all that stuff absolutely floored me.
- 32:23Those when I saw old school and wedding Crashers.
- 32:26They were the funniest movies I've ever seen.
- 32:29Now Wedding Crashers doesn't hold up.
- 32:30I will tell you that if you've ever talked about it.
- 32:32We're talking, we're talking about that in a few weeks
- 32:34actually. That one is a little where
- 32:36you're like, yeah, yeah. But they again, they don't like,
- 32:41you know, Rachel McAdams touch it or no who Bradley Cooper
- 32:45touches on it when he goes. They go to weddings and trick
- 32:47women into having sex with them. And it's a it's an interesting
- 32:51conversation to have because what is that?
- 32:54The trick is that they know someone at the wedding, so
- 32:57that's the trick. Right.
- 32:59Or that they, like, prey on vulnerable women.
- 33:01Yeah. Yeah.
- 33:03And then see, I struggle with this as being like sort of
- 33:05ignorant in that sense. Like, what Where's the line of,
- 33:09like, praying on someone? Like if you go to a wedding and
- 33:12somebody, it just is overwhelmed with the feeling of love and I
- 33:16want to get married. And I, you know, I can see this
- 33:18in this person tonight. Is that praying on someone?
- 33:21That's so tough because part of me is like, well, there are some
- 33:24context in which it's better to shoot your shot where you're
- 33:27gonna have a better chance of like shooting your shot.
- 33:30But also there is that there is that line of like I'm are you
- 33:37exploiting someone? Well, they lie the whole time
- 33:39they're lying. The whole time, yeah.
- 33:41So that definitely I. Think that's tricking?
- 33:44Makes it like tricking. Yeah, they're because they're
- 33:47like even they're at the wedding under false pretenses.
- 33:52I think that the fact that they are directly going after
- 33:57vulnerable women and not just like, you know, I think.
- 34:00Like targeting. Not, yeah, exactly like the way
- 34:03that Jon Favreau's character goes up to Lorraine when they're
- 34:08in the kind of nearing the end of that Heather.
- 34:10Green. Yeah, she's Lorraine.
- 34:11Yeah, Which, by the way, what a good get that.
- 34:14Oh, my God, It's like Natalie Portman and Garden State where
- 34:16you're like everything. This is because Heather Graham
- 34:19was the famous person in the movie.
- 34:20There was no one else, right? No one else is famous.
- 34:23And so they got her, and that seemed like what gave it that
- 34:27foothold to get produced and everything.
- 34:30Exactly. Yeah, she was really the only.
- 34:32Person on her face. I know, right?
- 34:34For being like, yeah, all right, I can handle this.
- 34:36Totally to be like, yeah, I'll swing dance a little, whatever.
- 34:40That that situation felt a little bit different to me than
- 34:45something like, you know, the guys in Wedding Crashers.
- 34:47Because even though she was kind of fresh out of a breakup, he
- 34:54didn't know that until after they had started talking a
- 34:57little. Bit when he was too, by the way,
- 34:58fresh out of a breakup. Yeah, yeah, I'm not saying this.
- 35:01This is where because you can, you can definitely go talk to
- 35:07someone in a bar that's kind of a social contract you've signed.
- 35:10No, you shouldn't hound someone. You shouldn't. 30 people.
- 35:14Like if I saw a guy talking to a girl, I shouldn't go up.
- 35:17You wouldn't say can I button. Excuse me, can I buy you a
- 35:20drink? You know, maybe whatever.
- 35:23Maybe there's a circumstance where even that would be OK, but
- 35:24that seems insane to me. But if someone is alone or a
- 35:27group of people, it's OK to walk up and talk.
- 35:30If they say fuck off, then you gotta fuck off.
- 35:33That's that's kind of the thing. So him approaching her because
- 35:37she was alone, he's alone and he doesn't do he doesn't have any
- 35:41tricks right At the end, he just, you know, you can go talk
- 35:43to someone. Yeah, that holds up.
- 35:45And the fact that we see that the first time that he is
- 35:49actually honest with someone and.
- 35:51He's not trying. To put on a front that it works,
- 35:54kind of going directly against the advice that he got from
- 35:56Trent in the beginning of the movie when he's like, girls
- 35:59don't want or no what? Maybe he does say they want you
- 36:03to be honest. I can't.
- 36:04I can't remember. By the way, Trent, isn't some
- 36:07people, not just women, some people don't want.
- 36:12They want. Some people do just want to go
- 36:14have sex, men and women both. So there there is.
- 36:18That can be OK. Yeah, but it doesn't have to be.
- 36:22You don't have to be so steadfast and driven that that
- 36:25is the only option. Absolutely.
- 36:28You. I could.
- 36:28I can't imagine why I wouldn't know what to do if I just
- 36:32started making up a story Wedding Crashers more where
- 36:35they're talking about being astronauts and baseball players
- 36:37and but if I did anything other than be honest, I wouldn't even
- 36:42know how to say the words. Totally like when and we see it
- 36:46when. Especially in a cold call like
- 36:47that. Where?
- 36:48Hey, I'm Sean. I you're you're attractive.
- 36:51You know, what are you? How you doing?
- 36:53I can't even imagine doing anything other than that.
- 36:55Hey, I'm Sean. You.
- 36:57You're gorgeous. I'd.
- 36:58Can I buy you a drink? Right.
- 36:59But even then, this is what I'm saying, like you should be able
- 37:05to do that. But it seems because I talked to
- 37:08my wife about it, the reason that I asked her out is because
- 37:12I saw her and I thought she was beautiful.
- 37:14And so because she gave me a little push back on that where
- 37:18and I'm like, well, that that's just the initial thing, you
- 37:22know, it's not the only thing. But that's what I noticed, you
- 37:25know, and beauty in the eye of the beholder.
- 37:28Like, everyone's beautiful. But of course, for me, I saw my
- 37:32wife and I thought, yeah, you know, and then and then I fell
- 37:34in love with her. Yeah.
- 37:35So like, you gotta be able to walk up and talk to someone.
- 37:38Totally like there's I think that you can't blame someone for
- 37:42thinking that another person is attractive and for that being
- 37:46the drive to go up and talk to them.
- 37:48Otherwise like how would people? And not aiming.
- 37:51Again, not saying you like if you do want to just walk up to
- 37:54someone and strike up a conversation, whether or not you
- 37:56think they're attractive, and then you end up falling in love
- 37:59for other reasons, Perfect. That's perfectly.
- 38:02Fine, that can all happen. And you could even strike up a
- 38:04conversation with someone who you think might be interesting
- 38:07just to be friends. But that's not really what this
- 38:10movie is, you know? No, it's all about that's,
- 38:13that's the interesting part. Like does it hold up because
- 38:15it's all sex driven? And yeah, I don't know, it's fun
- 38:19to talk about. But the thing that's interesting
- 38:21too is that this movie ultimately is not necessarily
- 38:27about the these guys like pursuing women or really even
- 38:33about like the ex-girlfriend herself.
- 38:35It's about the friendship between these guys.
- 38:38Like the real love story is between Trent and Mike, you
- 38:41know? And so it on the one hand, it
- 38:43makes me feel like, Oh, well, I guess the women are just kind of
- 38:45like chess pieces in this game where they're just building a
- 38:49connection with each other as men.
- 38:53But also it is really there's something really sweet and
- 38:57something I think that we lost in a lot of the bromantic
- 39:01comedies since then, where they are just so caring to each other
- 39:06and like their friendship is so it's so tender.
- 39:10It's so heartfelt. They really care about each
- 39:12other. Like when when Rob comes over to
- 39:15Mike's house, when he's like. When he stinks and the blinds
- 39:18are. Drawn you haven't eaten.
- 39:20You didn't eat yesterday. And he just is like truly, truly
- 39:25there to like take care of his friend.
- 39:28And I think that's so sweet to see.
- 39:30Of course it was. Yeah, one of the.
- 39:33Yeah, it. What am I trying to say?
- 39:36I've always felt like that with my friends.
- 39:38And maybe movies like this had an influence on that where yeah,
- 39:42I'll bring my friends all the time.
- 39:44I want to like, hey, I'm coming over and you want you need
- 39:47anything you want a sandwich or a coffee or whatever.
- 39:49Like it's just, that's how you got to be.
- 39:51I say I love you to my friends. Oh yeah, all the time.
- 39:54We hang up the phone and you would think we were married.
- 39:56Totally. So I I love that relationship
- 40:00between those 2 specifically. Because they're always calling
- 40:02each other baby too. So you are kind of like, it's
- 40:05sort of like you're in love, but they are in love in a, in a way.
- 40:09I'm in love with all of my friends.
- 40:10I just don't want to phone them. Absolutely.
- 40:12Yeah, we're definitely in love with my friends, of course.
- 40:15And that is, I mean, and that is really, I think sweet to hear,
- 40:21especially in as they're as they're putting on this like
- 40:26aesthetic of the of swing time, you know, like sort of this like
- 40:30old Frank Sinatra type of vibe where men probably wouldn't have
- 40:36any tenderness with each other. Frank and Dean, you don't.
- 40:42You want to talk about something that doesn't hold up?
- 40:44Yeah, I bet. Catch them in a bar some.
- 40:46Night. Yeah, you don't.
- 40:47None of that would hold up. Absolutely not, there's a lot
- 40:50way more F slurs than that you've.
- 40:51Seen Have you seen Frank Sinatra's mug shot?
- 40:55Oh yeah. He is so fucking attractive.
- 40:59Oh yeah, He looks like what you would think, a bank like Johnny
- 41:02Depp in Public Enemies. That's what Frank Sinatra really
- 41:05looked like. Oh yeah, it's I, I saw it like a
- 41:09month ago for the first time. It blew my mind.
- 41:11He just. You saw it for the first time a
- 41:12month ago. I think so.
- 41:13He just looks phenomenal. And he was arrested for being
- 41:17like too hot or something. Having just the right amount of
- 41:23alcohol in him, Yep. But still being over whatever
- 41:25the legal limit was at that time.
- 41:27Oh yeah, probably a judgment call.
- 41:29Yeah, probably. Yeah, totally.
- 41:32I feel like it was kind of refreshing to see these guys in
- 41:36like, you know what was easily confused as a period piece to a
- 41:4014 or 15 year old. Like they just look so cool.
- 41:44They look so cool, but it comes with way less of the baggage of,
- 41:49oh, they hate women, you know? It doesn't feel like that at
- 41:53all. It just feels like they're
- 41:54hustling, which, you know, is a bit smarmy, but it doesn't feel
- 41:57like they're, yeah, I don't know, See, it's, it's who wants
- 42:01to hear a man say this? So I, I why I hesitate because
- 42:04it is true. Who gives a fuck what I have to
- 42:05say? Do you feel like they were using
- 42:09anyone or like being. I don't know.
- 42:11I think on the one hand they were well, this is another thing
- 42:15that's kind of a Gray area where when you're supporting a friend
- 42:20going through a breakup, you want to help them, you want to
- 42:23help them feel better, you want to help them get their groove
- 42:26back. And you say, OK, how can we help
- 42:28you get laid? I used to have a bit of this has
- 42:31not done that I. Used to have a bit about that
- 42:33where I can't remember the bit. It was so bad, so such a bad
- 42:36comedian. But that was the the crux of it,
- 42:38the thesis of like me going through a breakup and my friend
- 42:41saying, all right, let's go, we're going to get you laid.
- 42:43And I'm like, how? Tell me how you're going to do
- 42:45that? What are you going to do?
- 42:47How could you make that happen? Because it doesn't, you can go
- 42:52out and I, I'm definitely, I'm a really good 3rd, 5th, 7th wheel.
- 42:57I can, I can fall in great with a group of people and I can
- 43:01definitely try to facilitate a friend, someone talking to
- 43:05another person with sex being the end goal.
- 43:07Yeah, however that looks. Totally.
- 43:09But it's, it's on you. It's not.
- 43:11It's not on my friends. Of course you can't be pulling.
- 43:13You can't be pulling all the weight.
- 43:15No, you know, they could they could lob something up, but I'll
- 43:17definitely find a way to screw it up for sure.
- 43:20And I have because it's happened a few to where some friends of
- 43:23mine just it just worked. And they're like, I think this
- 43:25girl thinks she might be into you right?
- 43:27And that I mean countless times the next day where they're like,
- 43:30what happened? I go with nothing.
- 43:31Well, obviously nothing, yeah. That I I'm me and nothing
- 43:34happened. And I mean, that's what happened
- 43:35to Mike. They tried.
- 43:36They all tried so hard. They gave him all the lessons
- 43:39they could. They set it up perfectly.
- 43:40They gave him the lob. And then, of course, he could
- 43:43not help himself but to call her that night, leave his
- 43:46voicemails, you know. I keep trying.
- 43:48I feel like I don't want to Babble too much.
- 43:49I want to bring it back to the point of doesn't.
- 43:51Hold up. OK, but that to me holds up
- 43:54because he he felt like he was being too aggressive.
- 43:59So just all the like just ran through it and then she called
- 44:02and he was eluded. You know, of course you'd think
- 44:05he was psychotic, right? And then he never did call her
- 44:08again, which to his credit, he he's like, you're right, sorry,
- 44:11right. I messed that up.
- 44:12Absolutely, and also it was when.
- 44:14She answers. Makes me turtle up so bad.
- 44:18That part I mean. And you've been there the whole
- 44:20time. Yeah, Mike, don't ever call me
- 44:25again. Call me again.
- 44:27I cut you off. I'm sorry, what were you saying?
- 44:28Oh God, now I let me see what was I going to say?
- 44:30Oh yeah, the recurring bit of people saying oh you should call
- 44:35that Nikki girl it's been 2 days.
- 44:37And also how they call IT industry standard.
- 44:39That shit was hilarious to me. So funny.
- 44:42We used that one for a while. Just it's such a fun, simple
- 44:47version of some slang. But when you do break it down to
- 44:50what he's talking about, like their industry is just having
- 44:54sex and the industry standard is 2 days.
- 44:57But I remember trying to put that into practice.
- 44:59Like if you 'cause I was still when I'm 14/15/16, that was
- 45:05getting numbers. There was no Myspace didn't
- 45:08start until I was, I don't 20, I don't know.
- 45:11But we were still like literally getting numbers and writing them
- 45:14on paper. And that was the currency for
- 45:17dating back then. So I did try to put that into
- 45:20practice because you did wonder you don't want to get a number
- 45:22and immediately call. But now I wonder what did.
- 45:25So like you find someone's Instagram or whatever do you
- 45:29have to wait to DM them? I don't know.
- 45:32These are the rules that I don't know.
- 45:34I was going to, I was going to ask you, but I feel like you're
- 45:37the wrong person to ask because you're married.
- 45:39Well, when we So it's funny because when we met Laura's,
- 45:43Laura would have fit perfectly in the 50s.
- 45:45She's, I mean, just like, looks amazing in a swing dress.
- 45:48One of the people who can, like, spin around in the dress furls
- 45:51up and you're like, you, this is the decade you belong in.
- 45:53That's awesome. But I sent her a message on
- 45:55Facebook. That's where the first.
- 45:57So the. Yeah.
- 45:58So I sent her a message on Facebook, small talk and then I
- 46:02think I asked her out and she goes, if you call me on the
- 46:05phone, we can maybe talk about that.
- 46:06That's awesome. So I was terrified at work and
- 46:09I'm like pacing around outside. But that is the true you got to
- 46:13talk to someone because when you type, you got all this time to
- 46:16think about it. You can't get a get a feel for
- 46:18someone. You need to I need to know how
- 46:20they are on the fly. Are you saying what are you
- 46:22saying right now to make me laugh?
- 46:23Not in 10 minutes to make me laugh.
- 46:25What are you running by your friends in that 10 minutes?
- 46:28I need you on the phone. So she was right.
- 46:30That's awesome. I did an okay job, I think.
- 46:32I mean, I must have because we now we were married with a kid.
- 46:35So yeah. Totally.
- 46:35It worked out. You must have not screwed it up
- 46:37that much. But I remember because it was,
- 46:39it harkened back to the day where, yeah, that sense of those
- 46:45butterflies, they're so much more real when you're in the
- 46:49moment. Oh my God, yeah.
- 46:51So I don't know what it's like now.
- 46:52You probably got to wait. I don't know.
- 46:54Nick, you got any idea? No, I don't know.
- 46:58I don't know if I would wait. Maybe.
- 47:01I think it's OK to to message someone maybe like late later
- 47:08that night or the next day to be like, hey, it was really nice to
- 47:11meet you, you know? I would, we would go to the
- 47:15skating rink when I was, you know, 12/13/14 when we were
- 47:19just, Dave and I were just talking about this the other
- 47:21day, like when you started talking on the phone to girls
- 47:24when that was the, you know, and we would call that night.
- 47:28We would get a number and we'd get home and call and talk for
- 47:32hours. But we wouldn't say it'd be like
- 47:363-4 minutes of dialogue. We'd be on the phone for 45
- 47:38minutes. Totally.
- 47:39You'd be like the phone get passed around.
- 47:41We just talked about this, but we would call that night.
- 47:44But as far as dating older, I don't know.
- 47:47I definitely wouldn't get a number and call that night
- 47:49texting I might. Yeah, yeah, that's the thing.
- 47:51I would, I would send a text or like Adm or whatever later that
- 47:55night and say, hey, it was great to meet you.
- 47:56Because now getting a number, I suppose if you still do that,
- 47:59you get someone's number if that's your first interaction as
- 48:02opposed to Instagram or something, right?
- 48:04If you get their number, you text and you immediately open
- 48:06the dialogue by saying, hey, this is Sean, here's my number,
- 48:09This is Sean, nice to meet you. So now the dialogue's open, so
- 48:12there's no wait period, there's no industry standard.
- 48:15There's no industry standard. That's the thing.
- 48:16We have no monoculture anymore. So how are we supposed to have
- 48:19an industry standard, you know? Couldn't tell you, that's tough
- 48:22and I feel like people maybe now, I guess age 2 has something
- 48:27to do with it, but less time for games.
- 48:29The older I know for sure, the older people get, the less
- 48:31they're like why would you wait? That's two days.
- 48:34We could have been date on a date or totally.
- 48:36Yeah. They're like, why would I waste
- 48:37my time? Like, I'm gonna be out of town
- 48:39next week. I better make it happen now.
- 48:41So yeah, I will say, OK, I will say that one time I was in the
- 48:47process of planning a date with someone and we like, had a time
- 48:52set up a few days later. And he called me on the phone on
- 48:58like a Friday in the middle of the day.
- 49:00And I was like, hello, like what's up?
- 49:06And he was like, oh, I'm just driving to work.
- 49:08Thought I just called a chat and I was.
- 49:11Thought I'd give you a ring and you're like fuck.
- 49:13I was like you what I said I have to I have to work like what
- 49:18are you crazy and cancel the date because I was like this guy
- 49:22is this is he's too needy. See what a weird too much, what
- 49:26an interesting way Like since he called you, you were like, Nah,
- 49:29I can't. I was like, it's too thirsty,
- 49:31it's too weird. What are we going to talk about?
- 49:33What are we going to talk about on the phone that we can't just
- 49:35talk about in 2 days? That was always my thing was
- 49:38being too thirsty. I remember this girl.
- 49:39I won't say your name, but I would always whenever I knew
- 49:45someone was going to be with her, like just hanging out or
- 49:47whatever, I'd be like, I'll put in a good word for me and I and
- 49:49I would, but I did that. I bet you I did that 2030 times
- 49:54and it's finally one day she's like, why do you always tell
- 49:57people to do this? And I, I've like shit.
- 50:01And I got so nervous 'cause then I'm like, then the whole
- 50:04conversation went through my head where I was thinking, I bet
- 50:07they go, hey, Sean said to put a good word.
- 50:10I mean, I bet they were just literally saying that to where
- 50:13she's like, why the does he have negative confidence?
- 50:16Because I did. I did, you know, I still do
- 50:18where it's just I just never developed that level of comfort
- 50:23with with women. In my case with women, I just it
- 50:27never happened. My only thing was my lack of
- 50:30game was real. That turned into as soon as
- 50:34somebody could fuck, I could tell that that was that it was
- 50:37real. That wasn't like then that was
- 50:39like all of a sudden attractive, right?
- 50:41That was the, you know, yeah. And then eventually I did figure
- 50:43that out. It's like, Oh well, I guess
- 50:45that's what I got then. Right.
- 50:48That's that's my tool. But watching this, watching
- 50:50them, I just I never lived in a world.
- 50:53I maybe knew one or two people that were capable of doing what
- 50:57Trent does in this movie. Oh yeah.
- 50:58And like, I saw it work. But they were always so they
- 51:00were the hottest of our friends. Of course, you know those people
- 51:03that that was never me, that no, nobody was ever like, Oh my God,
- 51:08Sean's the cute one out of the out of the 10 guys.
- 51:11It was always like our friend Trevor or you look at now you're
- 51:15objectively, you're like, yeah, he's he was always beautiful.
- 51:18You're like, of course he's going to be the.
- 51:19One, he never had the acne. It was just, you know, all those
- 51:22things. But so this is another
- 51:25interesting part about like, does it hold up?
- 51:26Because I always looked at that like it was so far away from
- 51:29anything that I could ever even think about doing to.
- 51:33It was more of like a fantasy than thinking about how they
- 51:37were treating women at the time. Right.
- 51:39Yeah, of course. I mean, of course, at like such
- 51:42a formative age too, where you were like, you know, you were a
- 51:45teen, you were looking at these guys being like.
- 51:48Just so and. This is what just so horny being
- 51:50like. I guess this is what it's like
- 51:52to be a grown up is you just go up to people.
- 51:54It is funny when you think about it and you're like, is that what
- 51:56bars are like? And then you start going to bars
- 51:58in Sioux Falls, SD in 2000 three whenever I turn 21 and you're.
- 52:04Like no, no. One's swinging.
- 52:06No, they're fighting. They're smoking inside, like
- 52:09fighting, ordering drinks, more fights.
- 52:11You know, there's three girls, there's 70 guys.
- 52:14One of them's bleeding. That guy's bleeding and they
- 52:17didn't kick him out the door. Guy hates everyone.
- 52:20Everybody wants to have sex. No one's going to.
- 52:22I need to get out of here before they all fight in the parking
- 52:24lot. That was most of it.
- 52:26That's and, and basically every night, yeah, there is that like,
- 52:33I don't know, the LA of it all is really funny because on the
- 52:35one hand you see kind of this this fantasy of guys who are
- 52:41able to some of them able to like talk to women really
- 52:44easily. They're going to these clubs,
- 52:47which at the time were exactly what you were seeing, right?
- 52:51Like they didn't hire extras. Those cool people were actually
- 52:53hanging out there. They were actually in this,
- 52:56like, swing revival where people were saying baby.
- 52:59And, you know, walking around like Frank Sinatra.
- 53:02Like that, on the one hand, is something that really draws you
- 53:06into this group of friends, this kind of fantasy world.
- 53:10And on the flip side of that, they do make a point to show
- 53:14that like all these guys are trying to make it, you know, the
- 53:17they're. All they're all actors.
- 53:19They're all actors that you know, one of the guys doesn't
- 53:22get the role as goofy. One of them doesn't have a
- 53:25booking agent, but he's telling all the women he does like
- 53:28they're all just kind of. That all holds up.
- 53:30That all holds up so well. And I think that is, I mean, as
- 53:36a person who hasn't lived in LA, just looking at it from the
- 53:39outside, it feels like that is so true to the experience of
- 53:45young people in LA where on the one hand you're like, Oh my God,
- 53:48I'm going to all these cool places.
- 53:50I know where the place is where there's no sign, and I'm going
- 53:53to impress people because I know how to get there.
- 53:56But then also feeling like you have to overcompensate for the
- 54:00fact that you aren't really making it in the way that you
- 54:03want to be making it like comparing yourself to your
- 54:06friends. Like when Mike and and Ron are
- 54:09having that conversation where he's like, you got to stop
- 54:12saying your life sucks, man, Because if your life sucks, then
- 54:15mine is God damn awful. And it's like, that's that's
- 54:19also the part that we need to see.
- 54:21And I was really glad that in this movie they show both sides
- 54:26of that. It's like a, you know, is this a
- 54:29coming of age movie? Yeah, probably.
- 54:31Probably right? I mean, LA, LA will definitely,
- 54:36it's the, it's the final frontier for fame.
- 54:39You know, you could, you're so close because you can't anyone,
- 54:42you can move there and you can be, you can go to, you can go to
- 54:46a bar on rodeo that will let you pay $60.00 for a martini.
- 54:49They'll let you do that. And you can sit next to Jon Hamm
- 54:52and you'll be right there. And it will definitely make you
- 54:55think that it you're like, well, very I'd bring up.
- 54:59That's because that happened to us one time.
- 55:01I did the late Late Show and then we Ian took me out to
- 55:03dinner at Musso and Frank's, which is this like old Hollywood
- 55:05place. It's but Jon Hamm walks in and
- 55:08you're like, it, This is where it happens.
- 55:12And so of course it makes you feel that way.
- 55:14And and it hurts so much when you just you're like, why the
- 55:18fuck can't I do get there? You know, because the all the
- 55:24Stew of what you need to get to make that happen.
- 55:27And so talent is just a fraction of what you need.
- 55:29Right place, right time, look, connections, all that, a little
- 55:32bit of money, you need all that. Stuff, I mean, and these guys I
- 55:35mean these guys had no money when they made this they were
- 55:39they were just slopping it together when they first
- 55:42screened it, they like didn't have anyone distributing it.
- 55:44They just rented out a theater of 500 people, invited all their
- 55:48friends and some for like some reason, a couple of people from
- 55:54Miramax happened to be there and it was like.
- 55:56Another thing about LA totally that can and does happen.
- 56:01I never, I never had much come of it, but I did.
- 56:04AI was doing a stand up show one time and this guy came up and he
- 56:06was from NBC, gave me his card. I went in for a general the next
- 56:09day. Yeah, nothing happened, but but
- 56:11they're there. Or I've done stand up shows
- 56:13where somebody came up, they were from Netflix or whatever.
- 56:16And that happens in Los Angeles. It doesn't happen in Portland.
- 56:20That doesn't happen in Aunt Walmart in Austin anymore.
- 56:23But it just LA, New York, that's where.
- 56:26So when you go there, it's you're you're touching it.
- 56:28You're not even kind of you're touching the dream.
- 56:30You just can't. It's a tricky place.
- 56:34So that holds up. That's very accurate with that
- 56:36scene. Like it's so depressing, but
- 56:37also so vibrant and so exhilarating and motivating to
- 56:41be in that world with these people.
- 56:44You go get a burrito and you're like, you know, fucking Matt
- 56:48Damon. There's Matt Damon also getting
- 56:49a burrito and. He's rich and famous getting a
- 56:52burrito. Yeah, but there's Parker Posey,
- 56:54right? Look at us.
- 56:55We're both. We both like ice cream.
- 56:57So why can't I? Be so, why can't I be fucking
- 56:58famous? It's it'll you'll it'll do that
- 57:01to you and that's sometimes it works and that's what's you
- 57:06being in stand up. I I just that's my reference,
- 57:08but I've seen it work. You know, I've I've seen it
- 57:11where this is just some person that I was with, not some.
- 57:14This is like one of my best friends who I'm with and then
- 57:17they get jobs and now they're in TV shows and now they're writing
- 57:20and it just, it does happen, right?
- 57:23But it's tricky. So LALA is a is a crazy place
- 57:27like that. Brutal, brutal, but also like,
- 57:31aspirational. Like everything's a little.
- 57:34And that's what again with this, they just on a shoestring
- 57:38budget, they made this movie and it's one of the biggest cult
- 57:40classics. Oh yeah.
- 57:41Which by the way, I just found out that cult is short for
- 57:43culture. I never knew that.
- 57:45Wait, are you serious? Yeah, well in this I so I
- 57:47thought cult classic meant like it was a cult of people that
- 57:50like this movie. That's what I thought too.
- 57:52Well, I think, am I wrong? Am I wrong?
- 57:54Culture. Cult stands for culture.
- 57:55It's short for Culture Classic, right?
- 57:57Someone take this microphone away from me.
- 57:59What the fuck am I doing with this podcast?
- 58:00I just learned that like a month ago.
- 58:03Yeah. That because then when I hit it,
- 58:04I'm like, oh, that makes a ton of sense.
- 58:06Absolutely. But also so does the way that we
- 58:08thought of it, by the way, I thought of a cult of people
- 58:11liking or like, you like office space.
- 58:13Yeah, I'm in the cult. I'm in the office space.
- 58:15That's. What?
- 58:15I thought it was too. OK, wow.
- 58:17Well, thank you for validating. Me.
- 58:19And now we know. Something, and now we know
- 58:20something. And now, audience, you have
- 58:22gotten to see this happen in real time.
- 58:24I've been humbled. I love that shit.
- 58:26I learned stuff on our podcast all the time because you and
- 58:28David are, I hesitate to say smarter, even though they both
- 58:31might be. But what I will say is more well
- 58:33read and just I have more knowledge and so I learned stuff
- 58:38from them constantly and I always I'm way past the point of
- 58:42being embarrassed if I don't know something like with the
- 58:44back toll test. I would way rather ask and have
- 58:46that stick in my memory totally then wonder or have to go Google
- 58:50it later. Or like or talk about it
- 58:52pretending like. Oh yeah, I totally know what
- 58:54that is. You.
- 58:54Know that's come back up on me too many times yeah totally even
- 58:58lying about seeing something and then someone will ask a specific
- 59:00and you got to be like and you got to be.
- 59:01Like lying. Listen, I was lying 5 seconds
- 59:03ago. I did tell you a lie.
- 59:05I've. Never.
- 59:06Yeah, I resolved to not do that. As much as I can avoid it, I
- 59:10avoid it in my adult life. Good.
- 59:12It has to happen sometimes where you just you're like, do I feel
- 59:16like talking to to the stranger about why I haven't seen this
- 59:19movie for 10 minutes? Or should I lie and say I have
- 59:22and have it be a 32nd conversation?
- 59:27Yeah, you get, you get in too much trouble when you do that
- 59:30too much. So you just got it.
- 59:31And like, honestly, when if you tell someone that you haven't
- 59:34seen something or that you don't know something and they're like,
- 59:37you have it, you didn't know that, then I know that that's a
- 59:40conversation I'm ready to leave. Also, fuck them, yeah.
- 59:42And. Them I I'm I'm also done saying
- 59:45this. I try my best to be done with
- 59:47this is Oh my God, you haven't seen that.
- 59:49I try because because who wants to hear?
- 59:52That I know. I know.
- 59:54And then all of a sudden I'm looking down on you.
- 59:55I think I'm better than you because I took two hours and I
- 59:57watched a movie. Something It's like when people.
- 1:00:00Where you were maybe reading a book instead that I haven't read
- 1:00:02because I've only read like 6. So, you know, I, I'm trying to
- 1:00:06be done with the oh, you got to see it because no, you don't.
- 1:00:09If you had to, you would have. Yeah.
- 1:00:10So. And here's the thing too, is
- 1:00:12that I think we see that so much in like, you know, seeing
- 1:00:16movies. It's like, OK, well it doesn't
- 1:00:18take really any skill to go see a movie.
- 1:00:21When people say the same thing about like concerts and they're
- 1:00:23like, Oh well, I've seen them in concert 10 times.
- 1:00:26It's like, OK, so you bought a ticket 10 times like that didn't
- 1:00:29take. I didn't take anything or like,
- 1:00:31Oh yeah, I've been to that like exclusive bar like 5 times.
- 1:00:34It's like, yeah, OK, so you knew where a place was and you went
- 1:00:38there. This is, this is sort of
- 1:00:41adjacent to how I feel about, you know, those like Dick heads
- 1:00:46with big trucks. Big.
- 1:00:47It's always a dude with a big truck.
- 1:00:49Not saying every guy with a big truck is an asshole, but the
- 1:00:51ones that are. So what's supposed to impress me
- 1:00:54that you have an extra $300 a month to pay for this truck
- 1:00:57That's at the base level. That's what you're doing to me
- 1:01:00because you're 3 feet up and you're cutting me off and I'm
- 1:01:04supposed to think, oh man, they have 300 extra dollars every
- 1:01:06month, right? Wow, it is your turn.
- 1:01:09You are. You are much better than me.
- 1:01:11It's one, yeah. It's one of those things.
- 1:01:12Totally. But when we live in a culture
- 1:01:14where like the things you like define your personality, it's
- 1:01:20like, you know, that's good. Line from High Fidelity A while
- 1:01:23back, Dick, Harry and I realized it's not what you're like, but
- 1:01:26what you are like. Books, movies, films, these
- 1:01:28things matter. It's what defines you.
- 1:01:30That's I think about that totally.
- 1:01:33But you know what? Some of the shittiest people
- 1:01:34like the same stuff that I do so.
- 1:01:37I mean, I The Town is one of my favorite movies.
- 1:01:40I bet some shitty people like The town.
- 1:01:43I bet you they're not all great guys that like.
- 1:01:45Probably not. Probably if you got them all in
- 1:01:46a room together, it would kind of look like a South Dakota bar,
- 1:01:49is what I'm. Thinking Entourage, you want to
- 1:01:50talk about some shit that is that is that would be great
- 1:01:53fodder for this show. But Entourage and I, if you cut
- 1:01:56through cuz again, it's, it's just a extremely heightened
- 1:02:01version of swingers in every aspect.
- 1:02:04But like the love with those four guys, they all love each
- 1:02:07other and they all are good guys in that show.
- 1:02:11But then they say the F word a bunch and they're talking about,
- 1:02:14bro, I need to get, you know what I mean?
- 1:02:16It's so that's another thing where I like that.
- 1:02:19And I bet you some people that are shitty also like that.
- 1:02:22Yeah, that totally next time. I know it's a weird one, but the
- 1:02:25next time I do this, we should tackle the Entourage movie
- 1:02:28because. It would be great.
- 1:02:29There's so much shit in there where you're like.
- 1:02:31What? In the world were they thinking
- 1:02:34when that? I think the first line of
- 1:02:35dialogue I think in the movie is drama going, I'm going to have
- 1:02:39to jerk it before we get there. I think that's the very first
- 1:02:42line. But then you look at like how
- 1:02:46they, if you break it down, like how they treat women, Vince, the
- 1:02:48famous one, he's he's always respectful.
- 1:02:51He is a womanizer and he's he's a man about town, but he's never
- 1:02:55fake or anything about it. So it's, it's an interesting
- 1:02:58conversation to have, I think. Yeah, yeah, I I agree.
- 1:03:02We should definitely do that the next time.
- 1:03:04Listeners, it's an interesting one for sure.
- 1:03:06We'll have yeah, we'll be here for a couple hours.
- 1:03:09That one, one thing I I want to kind of wrap us up with is just,
- 1:03:14I think the most timeless piece of this movie is just how it
- 1:03:20feels when you're going through a breakup when you
- 1:03:24simultaneously feel like I cannot talk about anything else.
- 1:03:27But also I'm self-conscious for talking about it so much.
- 1:03:31And like that tension when you know, like your friends are
- 1:03:34probably tired of hearing about it, but you just it's all
- 1:03:39consuming. And when they tell you like
- 1:03:42Trent is telling Mike in the beginning, like you will forget
- 1:03:45about her. Like you'll get over this.
- 1:03:48And he's like, I cannot fathom that.
- 1:03:51And then they come full circle, which actually is interesting
- 1:03:54because. When they put a bow on it and he
- 1:03:56hangs up on Michelle at the end. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:03:58And they do really tight. And that is exactly what happens
- 1:04:02in my experience. Yeah, you know, barring a couple
- 1:04:05examples, but that's almost exactly what happens is you're
- 1:04:08like, oh, that's not the end of it's not the end of the world
- 1:04:11sucked. And it's always, it's it's
- 1:04:13always going to suck to some level.
- 1:04:14Every breakup, always kind of. They're all still in there, some
- 1:04:18more than others, of course. But then hopefully everyone
- 1:04:21finds this. But I'll speak for myself.
- 1:04:23I found happiness and I found this person.
- 1:04:25And I can't imagine being with any of the other people that I
- 1:04:29thought I was going to end up with, and I'm sure they all feel
- 1:04:32the same way. I hope they do.
- 1:04:33I hope so too. I hope, yeah, I hope they
- 1:04:35didn't. We're like yeah, fuck, Sean's
- 1:04:36the worst. I'm.
- 1:04:37Glad. I hope there's a little part of
- 1:04:39each person that's like, yeah, I could have seen that, but I'm
- 1:04:41happy it didn't work out. Yeah, they're like, OK, it was
- 1:04:43for the best. But, you know, lots of love to
- 1:04:45him. Yeah, totally.
- 1:04:46I remember where I was when I first realized, like, I think, I
- 1:04:53think I'm going to get past this like in my last breakup.
- 1:04:56Like I remember the moment where I was like, wow, maybe, maybe
- 1:05:01I'll be OK. Like, and that was months after
- 1:05:06it happened. It was like every day.
- 1:05:09When they say half the half the time you were together, that's
- 1:05:12the the adage, Yeah. So yeah, there was a couple
- 1:05:16girl, one girl I was with for quite some time on and off.
- 1:05:19And that took, I was there, I was like, there's no, there's no
- 1:05:22way. There's no way.
- 1:05:23Like I, I couldn't hear the name and I would like trigger me and
- 1:05:28set me off. And now, you know, what's funny
- 1:05:30is every now and again I'll poke around on like her Myspace or
- 1:05:32her Facebook or Instagram just to see what it does.
- 1:05:34And it doesn't do anything because now I can see her with
- 1:05:36her kids and just be so like, great, great.
- 1:05:41That's what's supposed to happen because I couldn't do that for
- 1:05:43years, even even in my marriage. It just like you just can't.
- 1:05:48It's something in there, you know, like it just still hurts.
- 1:05:51Even though I didn't ever want to get back together with it.
- 1:05:53Still hurt, of course, and it doesn't hurt anymore.
- 1:05:55It's still like, it's still like a wound, like it's healed, but
- 1:05:59you know, when you like poke on, it doesn't feel good.
- 1:06:02Still a bruise. Yeah, yeah, totally.
- 1:06:05Like the I was going to ask you actually that moment when Mike
- 1:06:08is going through that box of stuff from his ex Michelle, do
- 1:06:12you ever keep stuff like that? I still.
- 1:06:15Have a full shoe box full of stuff just because it just so
- 1:06:18happens that we never threw it away.
- 1:06:20But my high school girlfriend, there's a whole shoe box full of
- 1:06:23stuff at the crib at my mom's house.
- 1:06:25Letters that we wrote each other.
- 1:06:28What shoe late? I'm trying to just stuff from
- 1:06:29dates or whatever. But at the time I was keeping
- 1:06:32because I, I was like, we're going to get married so I'm
- 1:06:36going to want this stuff later. And it just made its way to a
- 1:06:40corner of my old room. And now it's way past the point
- 1:06:43where I'm like, I definitely don't want to throw it away now
- 1:06:45because I could, I could show my wife and she wouldn't care.
- 1:06:47This is from 16 year old me. Who gives a shit?
- 1:06:50So yeah, there's some of that stuff.
- 1:06:52And I think I probably still have a couple things from from
- 1:06:55the one that really hurt, maybe some pictures or whatever.
- 1:06:57But if you get through it all, then to have those, it's, it's
- 1:07:01like a little piece like I would never, if my wife had photos of
- 1:07:05her exes or whatever, as long as I knew it was just that, then
- 1:07:09I'd be like, sure, it was part of your life.
- 1:07:11I'm not going to make you tear them up or throw them away or
- 1:07:14whatever. We're not going.
- 1:07:16To like he's dead. Yeah, he was.
- 1:07:18It was a huge chunk of your life and it made you who you are and
- 1:07:20it helped me meet you somehow. Totally not like I would say
- 1:07:23this about my little grandiose for my shoe box full of stuff
- 1:07:26for my high school girlfriend, but just to the point where like
- 1:07:29memories are memories and it's fun to look back.
- 1:07:31And yeah, put yourself, not even necessarily thinking about her,
- 1:07:35but just put myself in that mindset of what I felt like at
- 1:07:39the time. Yeah, you know, just almost to
- 1:07:41see like how you've changed so much since then, I imagine.
- 1:07:45I don't think I really do. I might have a little bit, but I
- 1:07:48just I'm pretty. Pretty much.
- 1:07:50I haven't really changed since I started skateboarding.
- 1:07:52I've I've I've I'm way less obnoxious.
- 1:07:55Sure. I don't.
- 1:07:58I used to. I was just a kid.
- 1:07:59I'd try to get under people's skin and sure do that.
- 1:08:02Annoying early 20s, mid 20s and it just gradually faded away.
- 1:08:08Like Trent standing on the table yelling.
- 1:08:10They don't even show the servers that stuff face.
- 1:08:13And he's just like, they're at that point.
- 1:08:15They are harassing that poor woman who has to do this all
- 1:08:18night, you know, And they're staying on the table.
- 1:08:20They're yelling. So much of that stuff.
- 1:08:22So much of. That stuff in bars, stuff at
- 1:08:25parties where I'd look back and I'm like, what in the world were
- 1:08:30you thinking? And like, it's just stuff it
- 1:08:34just, you know, I never had any like ill will in my and never
- 1:08:38did anything like that with any intent to.
- 1:08:41I just was, I was like me, me. I'm the centre of attention, of
- 1:08:44course, which hasn't really changed.
- 1:08:46That's why I'm a comedian now. You know, I just, I try to be
- 1:08:51cooler about it. That's it.
- 1:08:53Try to try to at least make it not look like you're trying to
- 1:08:56get all the. Attention, that's just part of
- 1:08:58getting older. You just figure out how to
- 1:08:59navigate these things and make it look like, like, I'm so
- 1:09:04aloof, right? I'm not.
- 1:09:05I still want it. I like attention.
- 1:09:07Yeah, I mean, that's the thing. We can all pretend like when
- 1:09:09we're on a screen or on a microphone that we like or on a
- 1:09:12stage that we are like, yeah, whatever.
- 1:09:14I don't care if someone sees it or not.
- 1:09:16Like, you know, I'm just me. It's like, well then why are we
- 1:09:19on a stage or on a microphone or on a screen if we don't want
- 1:09:23attention? Then you realize that's the
- 1:09:24appeal. As soon as you can make it look
- 1:09:26easy and that you don't care about it, then everybody thinks
- 1:09:29they're like, Oh my God, look at this guy.
- 1:09:30Don't even give a shit. Yeah.
- 1:09:31The amount of people that come up after shows and whatever
- 1:09:34they're like, you made it look easy and you're like, it's not.
- 1:09:36That's 20 years. Yeah, that's a long time of
- 1:09:39doing this. Yeah.
- 1:09:41But yeah. Anyway, yeah, I forget what we
- 1:09:42were talking about. But here's The thing is that
- 1:09:44even if we weren't recording this, I still would want to sit
- 1:09:46down for an hour and talk about swingers with you.
- 1:09:47It's a fun one. So you know what?
- 1:09:49I guess maybe I'm proving myself wrong.
- 1:09:51But The thing is, I am doing it on a microphone because yeah, I
- 1:09:55like attention. I want people to hear about the
- 1:09:57things that I like. Even though I thought that cult
- 1:09:59classic meant a cult around a movie, not a not culture.
- 1:10:04And I've had a movie podcast for five years.
- 1:10:07So, you know, what can I say? We're all living and learning.
- 1:10:12Sean, is there anything else that we haven't touched on this
- 1:10:14movie that you think we should talk about?
- 1:10:16No, I think we got it all Cool. Yeah, I think.
- 1:10:20I mean, I think it holds up. What?
- 1:10:21Do you think? I think that it holds up for the
- 1:10:23most part. I would like to see.
- 1:10:26It'd be cool if there was like if the role of of Trent was like
- 1:10:33a hot lesbian, you know what I mean?
- 1:10:35Feel like now they would now that crew wouldn't just be dudes
- 1:10:38like they. So I don't know if you ever saw
- 1:10:40that awkward moment. No, never saw.
- 1:10:42Zac Efron and Michael B Jordan and the girl Mackenzie something
- 1:10:48OK, she's great. But their crew, it's kind of
- 1:10:51like this. They just go out and try to get
- 1:10:52laid every night, but there's a girl in their crew, so they hook
- 1:10:56her up with guys, she hooks them up with girls.
- 1:10:58Like they wing, they wing person each other and that just
- 1:11:03completely the race has any sort of does this hold up because now
- 1:11:07it's at least equal totally. So I think now they would have
- 1:11:11one or two girls in that crew who were just their buddies.
- 1:11:14But then what would happen is one of them would they would
- 1:11:15fall in love, inner, inner crew love.
- 1:11:18And that would be that's what happens in that awkward moment.
- 1:11:20It's like 2 friends fall in love and the other two can't stand
- 1:11:24it. Yeah.
- 1:11:24So there'd be a version of that. You're right.
- 1:11:26Probably, yeah. But I think that on the whole it
- 1:11:30holds up because of like those timeless feelings, the fact that
- 1:11:35this film like even got made and kind of like overcame all odds
- 1:11:41to become something that was really high quality.
- 1:11:44And that it really, I think when I'm comparing it with some of
- 1:11:50those other frat pack movies, a lot of the especially like when
- 1:11:53we get into the 2000s and the 20 tens, this sort of like
- 1:11:57bromantic, we're trying to help each other get laid type movies.
- 1:12:01This swingers is so much more. It has so much more depth to it.
- 1:12:08It has some substance. I feel like it's more real and
- 1:12:12it's not as hateful to women. So like, I mean, maybe it's
- 1:12:17unfair for me to say like, yeah, it holds up because it's not as
- 1:12:19bad as the other ones. But did I have a good time
- 1:12:21watching this? Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:12:23Of course I did. Well, what I always think about,
- 1:12:25it's funny what sticks out to me, it's not any of the any of
- 1:12:29the meeting women or any of that.
- 1:12:30It's just the slang, right? Yeah.
- 1:12:31Really. What everyone?
- 1:12:32Skanks. How fun.
- 1:12:35And this skank who doesn't want anything.
- 1:12:36Yeah, yeah, Like it was yeah. Trent saying baby, double down,
- 1:12:40you know, all that stuff. That's what that's all I took
- 1:12:42away from this. When?
- 1:12:43I was Vegas baby and you know what those things still kind of
- 1:12:46for better or worse, hold up. People really kind of say that
- 1:12:49stuff still when they call you money.
- 1:12:51That's, I mean it's. Having a little renaissance.
- 1:12:53Yeah, it's been long enough where you get to start saying it
- 1:12:55again. Absolutely.
- 1:12:57So, Sean, tell me what you've got going on.
- 1:13:00What are you working on? What do you want the people to
- 1:13:01know? Do you want anyone to find you
- 1:13:03on the Internet? Sean Cougar, Melon Jordan on
- 1:13:06Instagram, it's all there. Tour dates, podcast, all that
- 1:13:09stuff. So that's kind of the one that I
- 1:13:11stuck with cuz I'm old, too old for TikTok, Twitter.
- 1:13:14I was never good at Instagram. Just kind of the one I'm like,
- 1:13:16I'm gonna hang my hat on this. Absolutely.
- 1:13:18There you go. Love that.
- 1:13:19Do you have any? Like what are you working on?
- 1:13:20You got anything coming up? I filmed a Don't Tell set for
- 1:13:23Don't Tell comedy maybe 2 weeks ago, so that'll come out in a
- 1:13:26few months. That was kind of the goal for
- 1:13:29this year, so I don't know. A special down the road, I'm
- 1:13:31sure. Very cool.
- 1:13:32Yeah, whatever, whatever, whatever ends up happening.
- 1:13:34And girl dad. As we and girl dad, as we
- 1:13:36alluded to earlier, Yep, that's it's still not really even out
- 1:13:39because all the so I did the special, but then like some of
- 1:13:42it was on the late Late Show, some of it was on Comedy
- 1:13:44Central, some of it's going to be on this don't tell.
- 1:13:46So really, I had it on my Patreon for sale and then I put
- 1:13:50it on our All Fantasy Everything Patreon and then I'll put it on
- 1:13:54YouTube at some point. But it's kind of all pretty much
- 1:13:57Ben. It's fun to see that the whole
- 1:13:59thing put together and it shot so well, so it's fun to watch.
- 1:14:02So I'll put it out at some point, just, you know, pay
- 1:14:04attention. Just pay attention.
- 1:14:06Well, thank you again so much. This is so much fun.
- 1:14:10And you know, next time we're in Denver, we'll talk about the
- 1:14:12Entourage movie. Sure will bringing a crew cannot
- 1:14:15wait to do that. But yeah, seriously, thanks so
- 1:14:18much for taking the time to come and hang out, sit on this
- 1:14:22beanbag chair with me. I love it down here, I love
- 1:14:24hanging out down here. The studio rules.
- 1:14:25Oh my gosh, yeah. Everyone come check out dude.
- 1:14:27IDK, it rules and well, I guess that's it.
- 1:14:32I'll see you next time. Here we go.
- 1:14:33OK, bye everyone.
