- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is.
- 0:15Monday, It is the 22nd of January and it is great to have
- 0:20you company. As always on this Monday start
- 0:24of the week. I hope you're doing well.
- 0:25Today we begin a whole new week of reading where we will meet a
- 0:31character that will dominate the entire biblical narrative.
- 0:36Well, that's not entirely true. We'll become a very big player.
- 0:39How's that in the entire biblical narrative from now on?
- 0:43And that is this man named David.
- 0:46Ohhh yeah. Today he will be anointed as
- 0:49king. And then as we go through this
- 0:52week, he will meet King Saul and then King Saul will fall out of
- 0:57love with this impressive young man.
- 0:59Now as we begin reading all about this incredible young man
- 1:04by the name of David, who the Lord is clearly with and blesses
- 1:07in so many ways, we might be tempted to think, ah, he is the
- 1:11star of the show. He is the person that the books
- 1:15of Samuel are actually about, but that would not be correct.
- 1:18He is a player, but God is the key player.
- 1:22God is the primary character, yeah.
- 1:25And it is God's kingship that he is going to show through David,
- 1:29through this young man that he chooses based on his own
- 1:33criteria. You'll read a lot of times it
- 1:36says David is a king after my own heart.
- 1:40That doesn't mean that God loved him more than others.
- 1:42It just means that he was a king that he selected based on God's
- 1:47characteristics that he knew would be important for kingship.
- 1:50So this is where we start to see some of the blueprint that God
- 1:55lays out that says this is what I think is important in the
- 2:00leadership and kingship that I represent.
- 2:03So when we hear about David, yes, we are even learning more
- 2:07about God's character. How great is that?
- 2:10So let us begin this journey of learning.
- 2:13Well, continue this learning of journey, but begin for today and
- 2:16this week. So settle in, friends.
- 2:19Join me and let's read together First Samuel, chapter 16.
- 2:34Now the Lord said to Samuel, you have mourned long enough for
- 2:38Saul. I have rejected him as King of
- 2:40Israel. So filled your flask with olive
- 2:43oil and go to Bethlehem. Find a man named Jesse who lives
- 2:48there. For I have selected one of his
- 2:50sons to be my king. But Samuel asked, how can I do
- 2:55that? If Saul hears about it, he will
- 2:57kill me. Take a heffer with you, the Lord
- 3:01replied, And say that you have come to make a sacrifice to the
- 3:04Lord. Invite Jesse to the sacrifice,
- 3:07and I will show you which of his sons to anoint for me.
- 3:12So Samuel did as the Lord instructed.
- 3:15When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town came
- 3:18trembling to meet him. What's wrong?
- 3:21They asked. Do you come in peace?
- 3:25Yes, Samuel replied. I have come to sacrifice to the
- 3:29Lord. Purify yourselves and come with
- 3:32me to the sacrifice. Then Samuel performed the
- 3:35purification right for Jesse and his sons and invited them to the
- 3:39sacrifice too. When they arrived, Samuel took
- 3:43one look at Eliab and thought, surely this is the Lord's
- 3:47anointed. But the Lord said to Samuel,
- 3:50don't judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him.
- 3:55The Lord doesn't see things the way you see them.
- 3:58People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks
- 4:02at the heart. Then Jesse told his son Abinadab
- 4:06to step forward and walk in front of Samuel.
- 4:09But Samuel said this is not the one the Lord has chosen.
- 4:14Next, Samuel summon Shemya. But Samuel said neither is this
- 4:19the one the Lord has chosen. In the same way, all seven of
- 4:23Jesse's sons were presented to Samuel, but Samuel said to
- 4:27Jesse. The Lord has not chosen any of
- 4:30these. Then?
- 4:32Samuel asked. Are these all the sons you have?
- 4:36There Is still the youngest, Jesse replied.
- 4:39But he's out in the fields watching the sheep and goats
- 4:42send for him at once, Samuel said.
- 4:45We will not sit down to eat until he arrives, so Jesse sent
- 4:50for him. He was dark and handsome with
- 4:53beautiful eyes, and the Lord said, this is the one anoint him
- 5:00So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the
- 5:04flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with
- 5:08the oil. And the spirit of the Lord came
- 5:11powerfully upon David from that day on.
- 5:15Then Samuel returned to Rama. Now the spirit of the Lord had
- 5:20left soul, and the Lord sent a tormenting spirit that filled
- 5:25him with depression and fear. Some of soul servants said to
- 5:29him, A tormenting spirit from God is troubling you.
- 5:33Let us find a good musician to play the harp.
- 5:37Whenever the tormenting spirit troubles you, he will play
- 5:40soothing music and you will soon be well again, alright, Saul
- 5:45said. Find me someone who plays well
- 5:48and bring him here, one of the servants said to Saul.
- 5:52One of Jesse's sons from Bethlehem is a talented harp
- 5:55player. Not only that, he is a brave
- 5:58warrior, a man of war and has good judgement.
- 6:02He is also a fine looking young man and the Lord is with him.
- 6:06So Saul sent messages to Jesse to say, send me your son, David
- 6:11the shepherd. Jesse responded by sending David
- 6:15to Saul along with a young goat, a donkey loaded with bread and a
- 6:19wine skin full of wine. So David went to Saul and began
- 6:24serving him. Saul loved David very much and
- 6:28David became his armour bearer. Then Saul sent word to Jesse,
- 6:34asking, Please let David remain in my service, for I am very
- 6:39pleased with him. And whenever the tormenting
- 6:42spirit from God troubled soul David would play the harp, then
- 6:46Saul would feel better and the tormenting spirit would go away.
- 7:01Our Lord. You do have a different way of
- 7:03looking at us, don't you? We see what's obvious and on the
- 7:08outside and in the actions and loud and clear.
- 7:11But you look deeper. You look at the heart, Lord
- 7:19Shaper, so that we are not easily distracted by the surface
- 7:22things, but that we too with your heart can see through to
- 7:28the more important aspect, the aspects of people and things
- 7:32which are important to your Kingdom.
- 7:34Because Lord, we want to live as though your Kingdom is the most
- 7:38important Kingdom. So shape us and continue to
- 7:42refine us and tune our eyes and our ears to always always see
- 7:48your kingdoms priorities first. Because we love you, and we want
- 7:53your Kingdom to be a reality here, just as you would have it
- 7:57be. And we pray all of this in the
- 8:00name of Jesus. Amen.
