- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The Propers of the Day. According to the Roman Missal before 1955. The Feast of Saint Evaristus, Pope and Martyr, October 26, in the year of our Lord, 2026. In the liturgical year, Dom Prosper Geringer writes, the beloved disciple had just received the long promised visit of our Lord inviting him to heaven when the church under Evaristus completed the drawing up of the itinerary for her long pilgrimage to the end of time. The blessed period of the Apostolic times was definitely closed but the eternal city continued to augment her treasure of glory.
- 1:00Under this pontificate the Virgin Domitila by her martyrdom cemented the foundations of the New Jerusalem with the old. Then Ignatius of Antioch brought to the church that presides in charity the testimony of his death. He was the wheat of Christ, and the teeth of the wild beasts in the Colosseum satisfied his desire of becoming a most pure bread. Evaristus was born in Greece of a Jewish father and was sovereign pontiff during the reign of Trajan. He divided the titles of the churches of Rome among the priests and ordained that seven deacons should attend the bishop when preaching.
- 1:56He also decreed that according to the tradition of the apostles matrimony should be celebrated publicly and blessed by a priest. He governed the church nine years and three months. He held ordinations four times in the month of December and ordained 17 priests, two deacons, and 15 bishops. He was crowned with martyrdom and buried near the tomb of the prince of the apostles on the seventh of the calendar of November. Thou art the first pontiff to whom the church was entrusted after the departure of all those who had seen the Lord.
- 2:50The world could then say in all strictness, If we have known Christ according to the flesh, now we know him so no longer. The church was now more truly in exile. At that period, which was not without perils and anxieties, her spouse gave to thee the charge of teaching her to pursue along her path of faith and hope and love. And thou didst not betray the confidence of our Lord. Earth owes thee on this account a special gratitude, oh Evaristus and a special reward is doubtless thine.
- 3:42Watch still over Rome in the church. Teach us that we must be ready not only to fast here on earth but to be resigned to the absence of the bridegroom when he hides himself and not less to serve him and love him with our whole heart and mind and soul and strength as long as the world endures and he is pleased to leave us therein. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The Introit.
- 4:34The Lord made to him a covenant of peace and made him a prince that the dignity of priesthood should be to him forever. O Lord, remember David and all his meekness. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. The Lord made to him a covenant of peace, and made him a prince, that the dignity of priesthood should be to him for ever.
- 5:21The Collect, let us pray. Grant we beseech thee, Almighty God, that the venerable solemnity of blessed Evaristus, thy confessor and Bishop, may both increase our devotion and promote our salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the wisdom of Sirach. Here was a great priest whose life was acceptable to God and proved ever faithful to him.
- 6:11When the day of retribution came, he made amends for all. Where shall we find another to keep the law of the Most High as he kept it? So it was the Lord took an oath that he should be the father of his chosen people. The Lord gave him the blessing which should extend to all nations, renewing the covenant in his person, ratified the blessings he uttered, and singled him out for favor. Such grace he found in the eyes of the Lord.
- 6:52The Lord made him great in the sight of kings and crowned him with glory. He made a covenant with him forever, entrusting him with the great office of the priesthood and enriching him with high honor. He was to serve the Lord as his priest privileged to act in his name and to offer incense to him acceptable in its fragrance. The gradual. Here was a great priest whose life was acceptable to God.
- 7:34Where shall we find another to keep the law of the most high as he kept it? Alleluia. Alleluia. Thou art a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. Alleluia.
- 7:54A continuation of the holy gospel according to Matthew. At that time Jesus told this parable to his disciples. A man who was going on his travels called his trusted servants to him and committed his money to their charge. He gave five talents to one, two to another, and one to another according to their several abilities. And with that, he set out on his journey.
- 8:30The man who had received five talents went and traded with them until he had made a profit of 5 talents more. And in the same way he who had received two made a profit of two. Whereas he who had received but one went off and made a hole in the ground, and there hid his master's money. Long afterwards the master of those servants came back and entered into a reckoning with them. And so the man who had received 5 talents came forward and brought 5 talents more.
- 9:20Lord, he said, it was five talents thou gavest me. See how I have made a profit of 5 talents besides. And his master said to him, Well done, my good and faithful servant, since thou hast been faithful over little things, I have great things to commit to thy charge. Come and share the joy of thy Lord. Then came the man who had received the 2 talents.
- 9:59Lord, he said, it was 2 talents thou gavest me. See how I have made a profit of 2 talents besides. And his master said to him, Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since thou hast been faithful over little things, I have great things to commit to thy charge. Come and share the joy of thy Lord.
- 10:35The Offeratory I have found David my servant. With my holy oil I have anointed him, for my hand shall help him, and my arm shall strengthen him. The secret. May thy saints, we beseech thee, O Lord, in every place bring us joy, that while we commemorate their merits, we may experience their patronage through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 11:24The Common Preface Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven, together with the blessed Seraphim, joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 12:30Hosanna in the highest. The communion. He was a faithful and wise servant whom the Lord setteth over his family to give them their measure of wheat in due season. The post communion. Let us pray.
- 12:56Grant we beseech the Almighty God that by showing gratitude for the gifts which we have received we may, by the intercession of blessed Evaristus, thy confessor and bishop, obtain yet greater benefits through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen. Let us bless the Lord.
- 13:44Saint Evaristus, pray for us.
