- 1:21[SPEAKER_02]: Let's get on with the show.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_02]: Believe it or not.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_02]: I think Renardo Green is about to become one of your favorite players.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_02]: I talked to him today in extended interview about the 12 minutes as pre-game interviews go.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_02]: I interviewed him for the Canberra pre-game.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to play you a couple parts of it as a preview, the whole thing airs on Sunday before the 9th of game on radio.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_02]: I was, I love talking to him.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_02]: He is a Florida guy, he sounds like a Florida guy, and you listen to him talk.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_02]: here is new nickname new to me it's an incredible I promise you this nicknames awesome and understand them a little bit better and it's really cool and I'm telling you I'll play it for you play a couple clips for you coming up and I think you're going to start rooting for Ronaldo Green once you hear this but first
- 2:09[SPEAKER_02]: I want to talk about Brock party because we've talked a lot about Brock and of course he's playing the Dolphins this week and that takes us back five years the memories of Brock's debut.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_02]: And one thing I've said a lot is I think this is going to be his best year just based on the fact that he's entering his prime.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_02]: I interviewed Cam Inman today for a new podcast that's going out of the 49ers.com, for NARS YouTube channel called The 49ers Guy and that will interview all of you people.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_02]: People who cover the team.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_02]: And Cam said today, he's like, I don't think it's too early to say just you look at the landscape and you look at kind of the way he's played and the way it looks like he's going to play to say that Brock party is is going to be an MVP candidate.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_02]: So today Clay Kubiack the foot in our offensive coordinator talked to the media and
- 2:54[SPEAKER_02]: I asked him because we've talked so much about how it's Brock Better, how it's Brock Better, and I asked him about the area that he himself said, Brock pretty needs to get better, and he gave a specific example, a specific example from the Rams game.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_02]: For those of you watching on YouTube, if you're listening to the podcast, you can always go to the YouTube and why some of these have a video, this has some video.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_02]: So here's Clay Kubey at today, and it starts with my question.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_02]: one of the things with Brock this year was working on being maybe a little more judicious about when to leave the pocket.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_02]: Is there anything from week one that stood out to you a play where you thought maybe he did a differently than he would have last year or think what wasn't an example of what you want?
- 3:33[SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't say differently.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_00]: I thought the I think we had a second and long in the
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: It was that nine in our yard drive where he scrambled and got a first down.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_00]: And to me, that's a great example of when you want a quarterback to use legs.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_00]: You get man coverage, your routes don't win, and when defenders are playing man coverage usually there's somewhere for the quarterback to run and Brock's is kind of clock went off.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_00]: He went through his progression.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: He saw that one and two were covered and his clock went off and he saw grass and he took it and he was aggressive and that's what we want to tell you what one got to play.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you don't want as a guy to go back there and just duck his head and go, you know, you want to go to quarterback first and then run when it's the right time.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought that was a great example.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think he had any word.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't the right decision.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: So great.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_00]: Awesome for week one.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: That's what we want to keep doing it.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_00]: Keep stacking those weeks and keep that mindset and just keep going throughout the year.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_02]: a demanding standard as you would expect from a coach, awesome for week one, keep doing it.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure it's rude to manage stuff for a lot of quarterbacks, but I thought it was good insight for all of us to know that a quarterback should be processing when to run even quicker when he already knows that it's man coverage.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_02]: That was that was pretty cool insight.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_02]: I'll get to some injury updates as well.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_02]: Kailot and Black showing up on the injury report.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_02]: I want to talk about that, but let's talk about why Renardo Green
- 4:47[SPEAKER_02]: is, you know, I think should be now one of your favorite players because just get to know guys a little better as time goes on and Ronaldo's not that a ton of interviews I watched him post game he did a couple of minutes afterwards with Matt Mayoco after his interception the other day and I asked him about a lot of stuff.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just going to play you a couple of clips because this is a preview the full interviews coming up on the nine or pregame on can be our on Sunday
- 5:12[SPEAKER_02]: And here's a couple of things he said that are I'm not going to play for you.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_02]: One, he called the end zone the chicken box.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_02]: That's a Florida thing apparently.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_02]: He said, what I was a kid all I want to do is take the pill to the chicken box.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, that was great.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_02]: I may use that.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_02]: Two, he talked about his diet a lot.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_02]: And I thought it was interesting.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_02]: He talked he like a two minute answer on his diet.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_02]: All the things he doesn't does need.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_02]: And I said, well, at the end he said, and if you go talk to Fred or Christian, their answer is going to sound similar.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_02]: And I thought it was a great example of like, here's a guy like everybody evolving, developing into what is an important third year.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_02]: If you're not a first round pick, even if you're a first traffic, if you are a first round pick and if you're not a first round pick, if you're a drafted player, your third year is really important.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_02]: Renardo Greene is in this position this year.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_02]: Dominic Pune is in this position this year.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of a pseudo contract year, right?
- 6:02[SPEAKER_02]: You're not a free agent because you're rookie contract,
- 6:09[SPEAKER_02]: If you're a first rounder, it's a four year deal with a fifth year option that they pick up going into your fourth year.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_02]: So, but if a team really likes you, and you're running out of green, or you're Dominic Pony, they don't let you get to free agency.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_02]: This is the year after which they sign you.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_02]: After your third year, because the idea is, well, we can sign him, he's not gonna cost as much as if you got the free agency, because he's gonna sign for a little bit less than maybe he would as a free agent, not maybe definitely.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_02]: We're betting on him continuing to play well.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_02]: but he's going to get the immediate money and security that comes from signing an extension before year four.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_02]: So it is a time when you start to look at guys and think like boy, they're locked in.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_02]: I thought before I talked to Ronaldo, we've talked about this all training camp if you've been listening to the show that he was a guy that had done at least from an external perception standpoint.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_02]: We didn't talk about this, maybe he'd say differently.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_02]: a 180 in terms of the way it ended last year.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_02]: It felt like on the outside it felt to me like stock was down but stock is up.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_02]: Stock was up before he played a snap this year.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_02]: It was clear the way everybody was talking about him that he came in right at a roll focused matured or just more mature than the year before which I guess is natural for everybody but it's not a foregone conclusion and
- 7:30[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, there was just something about him and then the way he practiced.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_02]: And so I was really excited to get to talk to him.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_02]: I said, who do you want to talk to for the pregame and I came a list and where Art was on the short list?
- 7:40[SPEAKER_02]: Cause I just wanted to know it.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_02]: Cause I feel like I don't, we talk about them all the time but I don't know it guy.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_02]: And I got a lot of insight.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_02]: And we got a lot of insight into the guy.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_02]: So it's a big, your form.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_02]: How do you even begin to quantify what it means to a young player?
- 7:56[SPEAKER_02]: I just thought of it when he said the thing about the food to be in the same locker room with Christian McCaffrey and Fred Warner and then on and on like he named those two, but entrant and both and kiddo and juice and Brock and keep going right.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_02]: Ocean diggy zoo and now it's like that, but it's just it's like if you're a rookie if you're a young player.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_02]: and you can't figure it out on the 49ers, then that's either on the 49ers for badly misjudging you and or it's on you for not following the United.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_02]: This isn't the Browns.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_02]: Right, you're not so rat like I heard there was the quote from Joe Thomas the other day who said he he broke down crying one day after playing the Patriots 10 years in the league is 10th year in the league driving home in the car.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_02]: He said I just realized every year I convinced myself we were super well contenders we played the Patriots got our asses kick I played a perfect game and I realized I'd been fooling myself my whole career.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_02]: It's not exactly as it relates to this, but I don't know.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_02]: I just thought that okay, Ronaldo Green.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_02]: We'll get to his journey in a second because I think you hear guy in his own words, talk about what it means to be where he is and what motivates him and that's really cool.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_02]: Before that, he shared, he threw a total curseball.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_02]: You're going to hear him talk about and there's more of this coming when you listen to the full interview Sunday, but his nickname.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_02]: and I've covered Florida players before and I didn't quite realize a couple years ago I did an FAU football game and a quarterback that called him lights out, lights with a Z.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_02]: And the coach, he went by shotgun and he wore a shirt that said shotgun.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, these guys are unbelievable.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_02]: It was FIU.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_02]: Sorry, not sure, but I just, so you, I started to learn about it and then it was like, no, they say lights out, the public address announcer says lights out for 13 yards.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_02]: That's a touchdown for lights out in high school football.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_02]: So like, I love talking to Florida guys.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_02]: And so anyway, here's some of that from Renardo Green.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_01]: The whole city of Orlando is only one dude, man.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_01]: That's a nickname that I got from my mom and it just stuck with me playing football.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, it's only one dude, man, in Orlando, Florida.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_01]: It's only one in Central Florida and everyone knows who that is, like everyone knows.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_01]: So it's like, once that name started ringing and they always say, dude, man, pine hills, number four, you know, at that point it was just like, everybody's like, he's going to delete like he's better than everybody else.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's always been like that.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_02]: You have to explain the nickname.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_01]: I believe my little girl, she gave me the name because when I was a little, like when I was a little kid, like I always used to be, I guess doing stuff.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_01]: Like I'd be doing something not supposed to be doing and she won't know because I just wanted off a dude that if I wanted to do.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_01]: And she's like, you always doing something.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm just gonna call you, do the man.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_01]: I never used to tell people that name, like I didn't, it just stuck with me, like I scored a touchdown, that's due to man.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_01]: I go to high school, they go to do the man, or I go to Florida State, that's due to man.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I play here, that's, and then it just just followed me everywhere I went.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_01]: It even followed me here, I ain't telling nobody.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, Dimo had went to school at one of my, one of my home boys from the career, he went to Oregon with them.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_01]: And that's how Demo knew about South the Pop Good and certain other things in the name do the man and when they were in mean he like I do the man and the D.B.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_01]: Co's look back at small and he like what name is that and I tell him he like all right, that's almost like call the eye do the And it just always follow me.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_01]: It's like somebody always said it's something
- 11:38[SPEAKER_02]: How great is it?
- 11:39[SPEAKER_02]: I can't believe we went almost, we went into the third year of 49ers football without getting to hear Renardo Green talk about that.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_02]: So that's, that's really cool.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_02]: And I mean, like he was awesome.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_02]: I'm gonna play another clip now.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_02]: This is, so here's the other question I asked him that I wanted to share.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_02]: I said, you know, it's hard to get further.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_02]: You can get a little further, but not much.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_02]: from where he's from in New Orlando, Apapaca, Florida, it's like Central Florida, to Santa Clara, it's over 2,800 miles.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_02]: There are farther distances that you can drive in the contiguous United States.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_02]: I think the, I think the front, someone might tell me like, as the bird flies, it's not like Maryland is somewhere to somewhere.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_02]: Like 3,500 miles of the furthest you can go, but it's, it's about as far from home as you can go for a guy who grew up in Florida in Orlando, then went to Florida to stay and so I asked him about what that's like, what that was like for him is a young guy to come out here so far away from home, what motivates him.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_02]: He talks about that.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you're about to get to an over an article green a little better.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_02]: Take a listen to this clip.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_01]: Growing up for the most part, I just knew that I was, I would say I'm going to the league.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, I just used to just try to stay focused with that and put a lot of time and stuff and then that, like when I played football, everything just fell in line.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_01]: Like I just did my part in football, I just went to the next step and next step and when I got to high school, I got to my second year.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_01]: I got like a four-star recruit, I could go almost anywhere in the country, and I went to Florida State because that's my dream school, so, and I was like, I'm either going to go to a school in Florida because I'm in Florida as you get, I'm either going to go to Florida Miami or a Florida State or a Florida State, they offered me not my dreams, so as soon as they offered me I just committed on a site, and then, um,
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: I was like I was only like what three I was in 30 minutes from the crew.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_01]: So it wasn't too crazy I ain't go back and forth like that don't until like my last year At Florida State that's when I started going back and forth, but when I was there at Florida State
- 13:50[SPEAKER_01]: had his ups and downs, I learned a lot, a lot of different codes and changes, a lot of different schemes, a lot of different players you meet, and then coming out here, you know, I didn't really know what Santa Clara was, the Silicon Valley was, I didn't know none of that, I just thought it was in San Francisco, so when I came out here we started driving in the other direction.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of started one of what was when we came out here, it was a completely different life at first, you know, it was like everything was real different, it's way slower out here, but I just adjusted to it and realized that it's like really a chill, like, calm place and it's like, you get a lot of time to focus on both, like I never really had a problem to focus on.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_01]: But you get a lot of time, you know, just to focus on ball and play ball and you know this year by year I learn more, I grew more, become more of a vet, I understand more and then I just think about pretty much like some time just reminisce like the certain things I had to go through when I was younger
- 14:52[SPEAKER_01]: or things I've seen that wasn't too positive all this and that and I just reminisce and think about like you know just how far I actually come and how far I am actually waiting for the creep that were like a lot of my friends and family stuff is still stuck out and still doing the same thing the stuff like that I just reminisce and think about like
- 15:11[SPEAKER_01]: just in general like a way that I made for myself and how far I've come so that's really how I just approach everything and I just try to be grateful for everything that come out way no matter good or bad just because it's simple fact stuff like if you knew certain things you want to understand why I say what I see you get what I'm saying but yeah what does I'm as Florida as it gets me
- 15:36[SPEAKER_01]: I'm gonna live in Florida, I'm a Floridian, meaning that like, my slang is Florida, how I talk right now, I'm a Matthew tryna talk proper, so you aren't actually understanding me, but like, everything Florida is me.
- 15:50[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I expand my horizon, I'm not trapped in the matrix, but it's like, I'm misfloored as it get, like everything, you see me, you can just tell them from Florida.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_01]: I talk from Florida, how I act probably be from Florida, just misfloor.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, tell me that doesn't make you go, yeah, it's a guy I'm rooting for.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_02]: That's pretty cool.
- 16:09[SPEAKER_02]: I asked him also in the interview with Winnie knew he was special as a player, because he said he was in playing football 21 years.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_02]: He's 25, about to be 26, six to our playing football.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_02]: Five.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_02]: When do you know your special?
- 16:24[SPEAKER_02]: He said six years old.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_02]: at five he played center and was like, you know what, this life's not for me, but all right, there's getting to know we're not a green.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_02]: I hope you enjoyed that.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_02]: I really enjoyed getting to know a little bit today and spend some time with them.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_02]: All right, a few pieces of one piece of news to get to.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_02]: We, you know, days on dribbling 10 weeks, Jake Tang is out for the year, big deal.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_02]: And then Thursday, the practice report comes out, the injury report comes out and Kaelon Black is listed with a growing injury.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_02]: Kyle Shanahan said he did Kyle had his radio interview today and said he was a little tight today so we didn't push him too hard.
- 17:04[SPEAKER_02]: I think we're just being smart with him.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_02]: I never like saying this, but thankfully, you know, you're playing my amy this week.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_02]: So maybe you don't have to push him, you don't have to get on playing.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_02]: So you go to Seattle, like you don't have any big trips, right?
- 17:18[SPEAKER_02]: You're at home for the next three.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_02]: So be smart and Jordan James went healthy.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_02]: You had a good camp.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_02]: So if it means you got to go to Jordan James.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_02]: that's not the worst thing in the world.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_02]: It was an active last week, going to opportunity to see Jordan James.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_02]: It's also why I said after the game of the day, hey, this idea of K-Lon and Christian,
- 17:40[SPEAKER_02]: It is by design and Clay Kubiak talked more about that today.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_02]: Like, it was not just the Christian guy hit horror or the Christian had a cramp.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_02]: They planned to mix Kailon black in at a high level.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe not more carries, but they planned to mix him in a lot as they did in the Rams game.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_02]: That is clearly part of the plan.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_02]: And I think it's great.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_02]: And Christian said he thinks it's great.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_02]: He, you know, it's a unique position for him.
- 18:09[SPEAKER_02]: So I think it's great for Christian, but, you know, if you're Christian and you're 430, like I don't think Christian ever said one last year over the course of 14, 413 carries, you know what guys, maybe a little less, let's back off.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_02]: Not that dude loves it.
- 18:23[SPEAKER_02]: He's getting after it.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_02]: And he's got a, he's, he's, he's, wants another big contract.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_02]: So it's a big year for him.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_02]: And I think the beauty is he can still have a huge year this way.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_02]: But it's why I said the other day, this is all great and theory.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_02]: I love the way it looked in the game.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_02]: Let's see it play out before we know that Christian is not getting, you know, 375 or something touches.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_02]: Christian's touches should go down this year.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_02]: Anyway, if for no reason then that deep is there.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_02]: But again, like part of what makes Christian,
- 18:57[SPEAKER_02]: Christian is, you know, that he does everything, and when he's healthy, he does it every week.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_02]: And who knows, hopefully it's another healthy year for Christian, he'll look great the other day.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_02]: That, you know, you hope it's not this case, but maybe there's a day when it's K-Long Black plus Jordan James this year, you're hoping not.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_02]: But that's very possible.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, it's, when you deal with a young player and anybody gets hurt, we see it all the time, it's happened to McAfrey two years ago.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_02]: But what you do with the young guy, who's a rookie?
- 19:27[SPEAKER_02]: We don't know yet how durable.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_02]: We just don't know.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_02]: We don't know.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_02]: Hopefully, Kaylon Black can play this week.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_02]: Hopefully, a little rest if you want to be cautious and let Jordan James have a go at it.
- 19:37[SPEAKER_02]: And then he's back next week, and they just keep this thing rolling.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_02]: But things look great week one.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_02]: Things look great with rookies.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_02]: It's always like in baseball, we're like a guy hits six home runs in a month, it comes off.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_02]: And it's like, what's great?
- 19:51[SPEAKER_02]: Here come curveballs.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_02]: Who's the guy at the Tigers?
- 19:55[SPEAKER_02]: I was just looking this up through the day.
- 19:56[SPEAKER_02]: God, what was his name?
- 19:57[SPEAKER_02]: The Tigers had a guy like 15 years ago.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_02]: A record, month, rookie, home run record.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_02]: What was that guy's name?
- 20:07[SPEAKER_02]: Not Rudy York, that's 1937.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_02]: Most home runs, not Craig Monroe, Chris Shelton.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe it was Chris Shelton.
- 20:17[SPEAKER_02]: I need a baseball guy in the comments.
- 20:19[SPEAKER_02]: Chris Shelton came up, it like, I feel like came up as a rookie like eight home runs like six in a week, four to five in a week, something like that, and then finish with like, you know, 10, but yeah, I, like I thought a lot of K-line was real real real, but still got to do it and so, you know, already a curveball.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, and yeah.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_02]: That's what you know, that's what you know.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, that's gonna do it for this show.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_02]: Miami Dolphins, first to three at home, can't wait to be out there, home opener for the 49ers.
- 20:54[SPEAKER_02]: And I'll be on radio again this week with Tim Ryan, so I hope you check that out.
- 20:59[SPEAKER_02]: And back right here on Guy Football Focus, after the game.
