Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We'll head across right now and find out a little
- 0:02Speaker 1: bit more about exactly what has gone on. We know
- 0:05Speaker 1: the Northern Territory Police are calling for information after a
- 0:09Speaker 1: number of vehicles were stolen. Now joining me on the
- 0:11Speaker 1: line to tell us a bit more about what's gone on.
- 0:14Speaker 1: It is Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Bland. Good morning to you.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Good morning Katie, Good morning to your listener. How are you, yeah?
- 0:22Speaker 1: Really well?
- 0:22Speaker 2: Now?
- 0:23Speaker 1: Tell us what's gone on? A number of vehicles stolen?
- 0:25Speaker 1: Where were they stolen? From?
- 0:28Speaker 2: Early Friday morning we had a break in at a
- 0:32Speaker 2: business in Winnelly where they've managed to get a set
- 0:35Speaker 2: of three sets of car keys and stole three vehicles,
- 0:38Speaker 2: ramming the gates as they left, causing substantial damage. Thankfully
- 0:42Speaker 2: though we've recovered those three vehicles. Then early Sunday morning
- 0:48Speaker 2: again another business in Winnelly broken into key stolen, vehicle
- 0:55Speaker 2: stolen that's since been recovered as well. We've made two
- 0:59Speaker 2: arrests in line with both those made as I just
- 1:02Speaker 2: spoke about a youth and an adult, which is good,
- 1:07Speaker 2: and identified quite a few other persons of interest we're
- 1:11Speaker 2: going to conduct for their investigations around. Hopefully the rest
- 1:14Speaker 2: of them.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yeah right, okay, So so in total was it four vehicles?
- 1:21Speaker 2: No, total three four, five six. We had another one
- 1:24Speaker 2: at Karama that was stolen. We've recovered that one, and
- 1:27Speaker 2: Funny Funny Bay last night we've now recovered as well.
- 1:30Speaker 2: So thank we have a really good recovery rate. So
- 1:33Speaker 2: there's currently only one outstanding. From the last three or
- 1:36Speaker 2: four days. We rested a seventeen year old male youth
- 1:41Speaker 2: yesterday for a Solomon vehicle the Fenny Bay and other
- 1:45Speaker 2: offenses around that area, around the Fanny Bay area, and
- 1:51Speaker 2: one of the youths we arrested this morning for the
- 1:53Speaker 2: weekend Vanilli on lawful entries. He in the last week
- 1:57Speaker 2: we can say responsible so far for seven vehicles. Yep,
- 2:01Speaker 2: they'll be facing those charges later on today.
- 2:04Speaker 1: And so were the thiefs linked do we know or
- 2:08Speaker 1: does it not appear that they were at this stage.
- 2:11Speaker 2: The one from when Ellie definitely were same offenders, the
- 2:15Speaker 2: Krama and Fanny Bay ones. You know, we think it
- 2:17Speaker 2: is separate incidences. But like I said, thankfully we do
- 2:21Speaker 2: have the vehicles back. I said, they're not out there
- 2:22Speaker 2: any longer.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Yeah, that is certainly good news. And do we know
- 2:26Speaker 1: if they were damaged or house. The state of those carts.
- 2:30Speaker 2: The ones from when Elli, yeah, pretty badly damaged. Unfortunately,
- 2:34Speaker 2: with the ones that were in the gates on leaving
- 2:37Speaker 2: got significant damage. And the one from Sunday night at
- 2:40Speaker 2: Whenelli we've just recovered data out in bush Land and
- 2:43Speaker 2: windows down. Of course of that trench or rain we've had,
- 2:46Speaker 2: obviously it's going to damage the interior quite badly. Yeah,
- 2:49Speaker 2: thanks for the owner.
- 2:50Speaker 1: That is bloody frustrating, isn't it? For those you know,
- 2:53Speaker 1: for those owners.
- 2:55Speaker 2: It is just so I can just let your listeners
- 2:58Speaker 2: o Katie. They are getting the older model Toyota l
- 3:02Speaker 2: increases and high luxes with the old key ignission, so
- 3:06Speaker 2: they're putting screw drivers in and whniplating the steering locks
- 3:10Speaker 2: and then starting the vehicles. We've seen a significant increase
- 3:13Speaker 2: in those older model cars getting stolen, so if they could,
- 3:17Speaker 2: if you do own one, perhaps invest in a wheel
- 3:20Speaker 2: lock of some sort of steering wheel lock just to
- 3:24Speaker 2: reduce the chances of your vehicle being stolen.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I reckon, that's bloody good advice because I know
- 3:29Speaker 1: what had happened a bit earlier in the year as
- 3:31Speaker 1: well that we were seeing a lot of those older
- 3:32Speaker 1: model land Cruisers and high lux is stolen, and you
- 3:36Speaker 1: know this is people's pride and joy. They love their cars.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely, absolutely pride and joy. Yeah, that's that's the effect.
- 3:45Speaker 2: They're getting your kids off the school, will getting at work,
- 3:47Speaker 2: and they just affects so much of what you do.
- 3:49Speaker 2: You don't realize how much years you go, I guess
- 3:52Speaker 2: until you don't have it any longer. Yeah, that's the
- 3:55Speaker 2: waiting game of getting insurance, of having to find another vehicle.
- 3:58Speaker 2: How do you get around normal things to get on
- 4:01Speaker 2: with life.
- 4:02Speaker 1: So Blendy just talk us through those arrests. How many
- 4:05Speaker 1: people have now been arrested with these car thefts.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Well, just from over the weekend so far, we've had
- 4:12Speaker 2: three or far five five arrests. In the last week,
- 4:16Speaker 2: we've made twelve arrests aligned just for style motor vehicles.
- 4:19Speaker 2: So that's without unawful entry or any other properly related crime. Yeah,
- 4:23Speaker 2: you investigate twelve arrests for style motivehicles in the last
- 4:27Speaker 2: seven days.
- 4:28Speaker 1: So working very bloody hard by the sounds of things
- 4:31Speaker 1: to make those arrests, and really good advice I think
- 4:34Speaker 1: as well for those people that do have those older
- 4:37Speaker 1: model vehicles, so you can just get like a steering lock,
- 4:39Speaker 1: can't you to prevent them being able to access it easily?
- 4:44Speaker 2: Yeah? Absolutely, And I understand they're not that expensive, so
- 4:47Speaker 2: probably you know, for the cost of a steering what
- 4:50Speaker 2: can save savy vehicle being stolen and you having to
- 4:54Speaker 2: find other ways to get around?
- 4:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I reckon, it's good advice when we've got people
- 4:59Speaker 1: out there really targeting those cars. Well, anything else we
- 5:03Speaker 1: should be aware of. This morning, we arrested.
- 5:07Speaker 2: A sevent eight or nineteen year old females on the
- 5:11Speaker 2: weekend for five unlawful entries into business premises around cas
- 5:15Speaker 2: Aina all around the same time. So they're facing quite
- 5:19Speaker 2: significant charges. That was thankfully a good clear upright, we
- 5:24Speaker 2: grabbed them pretty much on the same day they did them.
- 5:26Speaker 2: So they've both been charged with five unlawful entries each.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Yeah, right, so that was around the Casuarina area.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Was itin area Saturday morning? Yeah? Yeah?
- 5:33Speaker 1: And had they caused a lot of damage or stolen
- 5:36Speaker 1: a lot.
- 5:37Speaker 2: They just mainly damage smashing windows to gain entry to
- 5:40Speaker 2: the five businesses. So you know, again that's just it's
- 5:44Speaker 2: horrible for the business owner staff to go through that
- 5:46Speaker 2: and the costs involved with repairing it and the store
- 5:49Speaker 2: being shut for a little while where your doors are
- 5:52Speaker 2: being fixed.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Yeah, that's exactly right. It's just that impulse that you
- 5:55Speaker 1: know that is just not necessary.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Just yes, senseless damage. Yeah, just for no real reason
- 6:02Speaker 2: to steal a couple of soft drinks.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yeah, unbelievable. And is that what they sort of got
- 6:06Speaker 1: away with?
- 6:06Speaker 2: Just food and stuff, just food and soft drinks things
- 6:10Speaker 2: like that, just sort of senseless crime.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Really, yeah, it really is wonder well Detective Senior Sergeant
- 6:17Speaker 1: Mark Bland, Sorry you.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Go, I'm just going to say, I guess a good note.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Final offender for the very Springs tavern. Oh yep, I
- 6:25Speaker 2: was breaking in here. So that's the tenth offender now
- 6:27Speaker 2: in the last one that was remaining. So thankfully for
- 6:32Speaker 2: eating out there in the business. At least we've managed
- 6:35Speaker 2: to get all the offenders involved because that obviously quite
- 6:38Speaker 2: a traumatic time for them all. Oh.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Absolutely, it looked like it was incredibly frightening for them.
- 6:43Speaker 1: So well done to the Northern Territory Police, to your
- 6:45Speaker 1: team Strike Force Trident on being able to apprehend that
- 6:49Speaker 1: that tenth person make that arrest. Senior Sergeant Detective Senior
- 6:53Speaker 1: Sergeant Mark Bland. We always appreciate your time. Keep up
- 6:57Speaker 1: the good work.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Thank you very much. Gadie appreciate it.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Thank you.
