- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, this is Annie and Samantha. I' ho come to
- 0:07Speaker 1: stuff one never told you a prediction of iHeartRadio And
- 0:18Speaker 1: today welcome to another sub sub sub sub sub sub segment,
- 0:22Speaker 1: Fictional women around the World. Yes, and for this one,
- 0:26Speaker 1: shout out to my friend Katie, who has been on
- 0:29Speaker 1: the show, because today we are talking about one of
- 0:33Speaker 1: her favorite characters from one of her very favorite shows,
- 0:36Speaker 1: Tina Belcher from the ongoing animated comedy Bob's Burgers. Of course,
- 0:42Speaker 1: I actually had to check that we hadn't already done this.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I think it's just kind of gotten woven in a
- 0:47Speaker 1: couple of times we have not covered her. Also, I
- 0:51Speaker 1: haven't told Katie I'm doing this episode because I'm worried
- 0:55Speaker 1: I'm gonna let her down. Oh yes, I'm sure you
- 1:00Speaker 1: would never. I'm gonna do my best because I have
- 1:04Speaker 1: not seen it. I've only seen a handful of episodes
- 1:07Speaker 1: through Katie. I will say before we get into this,
- 1:11Speaker 1: you can go see or hear more accurately the savorite
- 1:17Speaker 1: episode we did on the food of Bob's Burgers, and
- 1:21Speaker 1: that has a more general history of the show and
- 1:24Speaker 1: also of course delves into the wonderful food puns because
- 1:28Speaker 1: there is a food pun in every episode at least one.
- 1:34Speaker 1: So yes, even though I haven't seen a show, I
- 1:38Speaker 1: am very familiar with it because of my friend Katie.
- 1:41Speaker 1: It is her comfort show. She calls it her Bob's
- 1:44Speaker 1: and through her, I have now gone to not one,
- 1:47Speaker 1: but two Bob's Burgers drag Brunches. Dressed as Tina. She
- 1:54Speaker 1: told us we were dressing as Tina. So we all
- 1:56Speaker 1: dressed as Tina, our whole crew. There's probably like eight
- 2:00Speaker 1: to ten of us. We were a table of Tinas.
- 2:02Speaker 1: That's what they called us. This time. We up the game.
- 2:07Speaker 1: The second time, which happened like a couple of weeks ago,
- 2:10Speaker 1: we really upped the game too, Like got the costume
- 2:14Speaker 1: down pat more and she Katie gave me like super
- 2:20Speaker 1: cartoony glasses. I loved them and I looked right. Yes, yes, fantastic.
- 2:28Speaker 1: We had the burrett, we had the whole thing. We
- 2:31Speaker 1: looked good. We looked good, and we got a lot
- 2:35Speaker 1: of like looks and comments while we were walking around
- 2:38Speaker 1: as a group of like ten people dressed the same way.
- 2:43Speaker 1: It's fantastic anyway, Okay, So Tina is the oldest child
- 2:50Speaker 1: of Bob and Linda, Belcher and Bob and Linda run
- 2:54Speaker 1: a restaurant called Bob's Burgers with their family. She's the
- 2:58Speaker 1: older sibling of Gene and Louise. She is perpetually thirteen
- 3:03Speaker 1: and in eighth grade, just the way kind of cartoons
- 3:06Speaker 1: always stay in that one state. You know. She's awkward
- 3:10Speaker 1: but owns it. She's romantic. She likes butts and writing
- 3:15Speaker 1: erotic fiction and what she calls friend of fiction, which
- 3:21Speaker 1: is fan fiction the friends in it, yeah, sometimes about
- 3:25Speaker 1: her own life. Her primary crush is Jimmy Pesto Junior,
- 3:29Speaker 1: which is fun because Jimmy Pesto is her father's enemy.
- 3:32Speaker 1: But she goes through a lot of crushes, including with
- 3:35Speaker 1: a goose and a ghost, the members of her favorite band,
- 3:42Speaker 1: Boys for Now, a band she is Boys for Now,
- 3:48Speaker 1: which is she's also in the fan club and I
- 3:50Speaker 1: believe the secretary of the fan club. The character is
- 3:54Speaker 1: voiced by Dan Mintz and very The lines are delivered
- 3:58Speaker 1: very flat and monotoned, typically, and she does have a
- 4:03Speaker 1: pretty iconic look. She's got a black bob haircut, thick
- 4:07Speaker 1: black glasses, a light blue T shirt, dark blue skirt,
- 4:10Speaker 1: red striped white sox, and black high top. Shoes, and yes,
- 4:14Speaker 1: the yellow Brett. This show is going on like its
- 4:19Speaker 1: sixteenth season, so obviously we cannot cover all the shenanigans
- 4:25Speaker 1: that Tina gets up to. Also, it's like this is
- 4:28Speaker 1: kind of different than any other one I've ever done,
- 4:31Speaker 1: because it's not there's not like an overarching plot, Like
- 4:37Speaker 1: there are plot lines that continue in plot lines that
- 4:40Speaker 1: continue over multiple episodes, but generally every episode is kind
- 4:45Speaker 1: of a twenty minute ish contained adventure, and there is
- 4:50Speaker 1: character growth and development, but it's not like I can
- 4:52Speaker 1: give you the here's the moment where this happened, and
- 4:56Speaker 1: this happened, but we all try to hit on some
- 4:59Speaker 1: cu character points. So very basically, if you don't know,
- 5:04Speaker 1: the show follows the Belchers and their friends and enemies
- 5:07Speaker 1: as they navigate their lives and relationships. There are, yes,
- 5:12Speaker 1: a lot of food puns involved, and the vibe is
- 5:15Speaker 1: generally very funny, heartfelt sweet because Tina is at that
- 5:20Speaker 1: messy adolescent age. She retains some of her innocent childhood
- 5:25Speaker 1: loves like rainbows and horses, while also entering a phase
- 5:30Speaker 1: of thinking about boys and sex and butts and also
- 5:34Speaker 1: like ankles and stuff, like she's she's into stuff Okay, yeah.
- 5:40Speaker 1: A lot of her plotlines do involve her getting into
- 5:43Speaker 1: trouble while chasing after a crush. Since she's very awkward
- 5:48Speaker 1: as well, her efforts can be pretty funny but also
- 5:51Speaker 1: very endearing. It's it's much more of a we're laughing
- 5:55Speaker 1: with her than laughing at her situation. She has a
- 5:59Speaker 1: very strong sense of right and wrong, which can be
- 6:01Speaker 1: a big driver for her character. As the oldest child,
- 6:05Speaker 1: she sometimes acts as almost the third parent caring for
- 6:09Speaker 1: her siblings, and it's usually kind of it seems like
- 6:13Speaker 1: she knows more about her siblings than her parents do,
- 6:15Speaker 1: which I think is the case for a lot of people.
- 6:19Speaker 1: She's genuinely pretty confident in herself too. She does have
- 6:23Speaker 1: moments of doubt, but she's generally pretty confident, so sometimes
- 6:27Speaker 1: she learns lessons around holding on to that confidence in episodes.
- 6:31Speaker 1: For example, once she caved to peer pressure and shaved
- 6:36Speaker 1: her legs and then later regretted it, feeling that she
- 6:39Speaker 1: did it for the wrong reasons, not because she wanted to,
- 6:41Speaker 1: because people told her she had to. She calls herself
- 6:45Speaker 1: a smart, strong, sensual woman. Tina is close with her
- 6:52Speaker 1: family members, and their relationships are the heart of the show,
- 6:55Speaker 1: I would say as the oldest, her dad bob off
- 7:00Speaker 1: and wants her to experience rites of passages, our rituals
- 7:03Speaker 1: from his own childhood. When she helps out at the restaurant,
- 7:07Speaker 1: she's the only one he trusts with flipping the burgers,
- 7:09Speaker 1: though he does not trust her with customer service. Both
- 7:14Speaker 1: her care always big on TikTok. Really, yeah, the whole
- 7:19Speaker 1: autistic she's autistic. No, I'm not. Yes, sure count the toothpicks. Yeah, yes,
- 7:26Speaker 1: I almost went into that because I was like, there's
- 7:29Speaker 1: a whole section about that in her character biography, and
- 7:31Speaker 1: I was like, well, this is too much, too unpack
- 7:35Speaker 1: for me. But yes, that is a whole conversation about
- 7:39Speaker 1: autism versus is she just awkward? But she does have
- 7:42Speaker 1: a lot of like she has a lot of things uh.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Or she like groans when she gets really nervous or anxious. Uh,
- 7:54Speaker 1: she like shuts down certain cases, she hides under tables.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Like there's a lot of stuff people have been talking
- 8:00Speaker 1: about with their character. But yes, that is a quote.
- 8:02Speaker 1: That is a thing that happened in the show. So
- 8:18Speaker 1: both her parents do experience sadness about Tina growing up. Linda,
- 8:24Speaker 1: her mom, sometimes embarrasses Tina, but is very very supportive
- 8:29Speaker 1: of her, including her crushes, barring Jimmy Pesto Junior. She
- 8:34Speaker 1: thinks she can do better than Jimmy Pesto Junior obviously,
- 8:38Speaker 1: and is very protective of Tina. It seems that while
- 8:42Speaker 1: all the siblings do hang out, it's usually more Gene
- 8:45Speaker 1: and Louise getting into trouble, with Gene occasionally siding with
- 8:49Speaker 1: Tina if Louise has gone too far. If you don't know,
- 8:52Speaker 1: Louise is like the chaos agent. So, but they do
- 8:56Speaker 1: all hang out, like even though their ages are I
- 8:59Speaker 1: believe Louise is four years younger than Tina, they still
- 9:02Speaker 1: hang out at school. Tina likes sharing her interest with Louise,
- 9:09Speaker 1: who is very good at manipulating Tina. Tina often acts
- 9:14Speaker 1: as Louise is conscious, however, and teaches her like important
- 9:17Speaker 1: lessons this is why you shouldn't do this to someone
- 9:20Speaker 1: type thing. Yes, yes, and she does have she does
- 9:26Speaker 1: have a friend group. She's got like a frenemy Tammy,
- 9:29Speaker 1: and she has like a funny line somewhere about like
- 9:32Speaker 1: this is my only chance at a peer group. So
- 9:36Speaker 1: she has a friend group. But I feel like in
- 9:39Speaker 1: the show, her family dynamic is more important. But yeah,
- 9:44Speaker 1: she is a very popular character. Here is a quote
- 9:47Speaker 1: from The Artifice, an article by Priyanka Prasade titled the
- 9:53Speaker 1: Significance of Tina to Bob's Burger's. Tina's comedy largely stems
- 9:58Speaker 1: from the fact that she remarks about so not often
- 10:00Speaker 1: broached by thirteen year old girls on television. She is
- 10:04Speaker 1: unashamed about her sexuality. She often fantasizes about boys butts,
- 10:08Speaker 1: and writes erotic friend fiction about her crush Jimmy Junior.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Her obsession with boys is not completely naive or innocent. Instead,
- 10:18Speaker 1: it translates into bizarre scenarios. She dreams about zombies making
- 10:22Speaker 1: out with each other, and of an island where she
- 10:25Speaker 1: can kiss as many boys as she wants. The show
- 10:28Speaker 1: unapologetically delves into what being a thirteen year old girl
- 10:32Speaker 1: really feels like, despite how occasionally odd and uncomfortable it
- 10:36Speaker 1: may be. Tina is socially awkward and quirky and at
- 10:40Speaker 1: times inappropriate, but always utterly unafraid to be herself. This
- 10:45Speaker 1: kind of reminded me of when we did Turning Red.
- 10:47Speaker 1: I was thinking of that too as our feminist Maybe
- 10:50Speaker 1: friday yev kind of the examination of that stage where
- 10:58Speaker 1: you've got your crushes and you're you're still young, but
- 11:03Speaker 1: you're also starting to experience like, ooh, let me withdraw
- 11:07Speaker 1: this a kind of erotic picture of my crush. And
- 11:11Speaker 1: we have as a society, we've been very uncomfortable with it.
- 11:14Speaker 1: We don't talk about it, and that's why it does
- 11:17Speaker 1: stand out when there is a character like this. And
- 11:22Speaker 1: I thought this was interesting. Apparently in the Unaired pilot,
- 11:26Speaker 1: she was originally going to be a boy, and they
- 11:30Speaker 1: kept some of the lines despite the change. So here's
- 11:34Speaker 1: another quote from the Artifice. For example, her very first
- 11:37Speaker 1: line in the pilot is that her crotch is itchy,
- 11:40Speaker 1: A joke that is funny, though overdone for a teenage boy,
- 11:43Speaker 1: suddenly becomes unconventional, slightly shocking, and even funnier when written
- 11:47Speaker 1: for a teenage girl. I agree. And another thing, as
- 11:58Speaker 1: I said, it's very much a lie being with her,
- 12:00Speaker 1: not at her situation. The whole show is kind of
- 12:02Speaker 1: like that, not just this character, but the importance of
- 12:07Speaker 1: her family celebrating who she is. Her likes her fan fiction,
- 12:13Speaker 1: which I believe they get her to read in one episode,
- 12:16Speaker 1: like they're celebrating it, and they're supporting her. There's like
- 12:20Speaker 1: one I have seen that episode where her dad, like
- 12:24Speaker 1: inful traits a basically kind of a broney scenario, like
- 12:28Speaker 1: my little pony scenario to get her a toy that
- 12:32Speaker 1: she really wants because I guess she wasn't allowed. But
- 12:36Speaker 1: they celebrate all those aspects of her. And when I
- 12:42Speaker 1: was reading about it, I saw that a lot of
- 12:45Speaker 1: people wrote about how multifaceted she is. She's not just
- 12:49Speaker 1: a one dimensional stereotypical teenage girl that we often see
- 12:53Speaker 1: on TV, and that she's really heartfelt. She's a really
- 12:56Speaker 1: heartfelt character, and we can all relate to the awkwardness
- 13:00Speaker 1: of puberty, which is where she perpetually is. Yeah, she's
- 13:09Speaker 1: often kind of the heart of the show. She has
- 13:11Speaker 1: the like emotional this is why we'd treat people nicely.
- 13:18Speaker 1: And I can say from personal experience it's the character
- 13:23Speaker 1: is certainly a hit at drag Brunch, and not just us.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Other people were dressed as er as well a lot
- 13:31Speaker 1: of other people. And her character is the second to
- 13:36Speaker 1: last one to perform, which I think, you know, you
- 13:39Speaker 1: saved the best for last. I think that says something
- 13:42Speaker 1: about about how popular Tina is. Well, I hope Katie.
- 13:48Speaker 1: If you listen to this I did a justice. Any listeners,
