- 0:00Hello there, my name is Tyler Griffin and this is Scripture
- 0:04Study Insights by Scripture Central Today Mosiah chapters 25
- 0:09through 28. Now before we dive into these
- 0:13chapters, I want to work through a a small activity to
- 0:19demonstrate a little principle that will come into play as we
- 0:24explore the scriptures today. So we're going to look at a a
- 0:34case study here, a scenario. Let's assume that your your ward
- 0:42is looking for a couple of leaders in an in important
- 0:46positions whether it be in an elders corn presidency or a
- 0:51bishopric or something along those lines.
- 0:53Just in in this made-up scenario, picture these six
- 0:58individuals that you have on a short list of consideration and
- 1:03all you have is this description of each of those six
- 1:08individuals. And you get to pick two of them
- 1:11that you would recommend for this this, these important
- 1:15callings. So person number one, he's
- 1:19short. He moves frequently.
- 1:22He's a recent convert to the Church, but many members of your
- 1:26stake in your ward don't trust him because he used to be an
- 1:30enemy to the church, used to fight against the church.
- 1:33He often angers people because he questions traditional
- 1:36practices and authority, but he's all in now.
- 1:42OK, Person #2, his parents are very well known.
- 1:46They're influential leaders in the area.
- 1:48He's willing to sacrifice and even has direct communication
- 1:51with the Lord on occasion. And he is a successful farmer.
- 1:57Person #3, his father, is a prominent church leader.
- 2:01He rebelled in his youth and he refused to serve a mission at
- 2:04that time. But he has since shown full
- 2:07repentance and has proven to be a faithful disciple who has
- 2:11served faithfully for many years now.
- 2:14What about Person #4HE demonstrates powerful leadership
- 2:18qualities. He's very ambitious.
- 2:20He's hard working. He's good at discerning other
- 2:23strengths and weaknesses and influencing them accordingly.
- 2:26He has tremendous amounts of knowledge and he comes from the
- 2:29best of families, and he's also very, very persuasive.
- 2:34Person #5 school was not really his strength, but he's developed
- 2:38into a great writer and speaker over the years.
- 2:41He's charismatic and a visionary leader, but many people say he's
- 2:45deceptive, even though he's spent many months in prison.
- 2:49He's been out for a few years now.
- 2:52He he causes occasional riots and unrest, but an amazing
- 2:56person and number six, physically this, this man is the
- 3:01strongest person in your area. Everyone knows him and nobody
- 3:06would dare stand up to him. He's very persuasive and he's
- 3:09persistent in getting what he wants.
- 3:11He's had multiple experiences where he's been delivered from
- 3:14danger and harm. There you go.
- 3:18So the question is, you get to pick two out of these six people
- 3:26and you all you have is the descriptions to go by.
- 3:31Now, many of you have probably noticed that this list is a a
- 3:36coded list of people from scriptures and from church
- 3:44history. Let's see if we can unpack these
- 3:48one at a time #1 Person #1. If you went with him, then you
- 3:54chose to appoint the apostle Paul to this position of
- 4:02leadership in your ward. If you went with person #2, his
- 4:07parents are well known and influential.
- 4:09Then you chose the son of Adam and Eve named Cain.
- 4:17If you went with person #3. This is Alma the younger, who
- 4:26will come into our story today directly related to what we're
- 4:31going to be talking about today. Person #4 is a very interesting
- 4:37one because, well, that's Lucifer or the Devil himself.
- 4:47If you look at person #5 and you chose him, that is the Prophet
- 4:54Joseph Smith. And person number six is from
- 5:02the Old Testament, Samson of the story of Samson and Delilah.
- 5:11Now some of you are feeling a little bit maybe deceived at
- 5:18this point. Misled.
- 5:20Frustrated with how this played out because maybe you you had
- 5:24selected Cain or Lucifer or Samson as one or two of your
- 5:30readers, as opposed to Joseph Smith and Alma and Paul, and
- 5:33you're frustrated with the way they were presented to you.
- 5:37Here's the reality. It's very easy that this is not
- 5:42a difficult thing to take a good person and portray them as a bad
- 5:49person or maybe even as a neutral person.
- 5:52And it's not hard to take a bad person and make them seem to be
- 5:59a wonderful person, somebody you would want to follow or you
- 6:03would want to support. That's the struggle that we face
- 6:07in our world. One of the many struggles we
- 6:09face in our world today is that the Internet is filled with this
- 6:15kind of exercise, this kind of activity where good is being
- 6:23presented as evil and evil is being presented as good, and it
- 6:28it influences belief, it influences people's attitudes
- 6:34and ultimately behaviors and character and their devotion in
- 6:40life. And we'll see this happening
- 6:42later on with Alma the Younger, because it goes about trying to
- 6:45destroy the church. An additional thing to look for
- 6:50in this lesson is how God works with those who have strayed, and
- 6:54then watch for how they respond to those efforts.
- 6:58So will most Some people like Alma and Paul, they repent and
- 7:03return, while others, like Lucifer and Cain rebel and turn
- 7:10for their way. In this particular example, you
- 7:13you saw Paul listed with some things from his past and Joseph
- 7:18Smith with some struggles in the past.
- 7:21And for our story today, this person #3 that we're going to be
- 7:25focusing on Elma the younger, who experienced some incredibly
- 7:32terrible things of his own choice in his past.
- 7:37But now you're going to see this transformation on the page in
- 7:40front of you. And so this set of chapters
- 7:44should be a hope inducing set of scriptures for those of you who
- 7:52may be yourself have struggled spiritually, or for those who
- 7:57have loved ones who have or are struggling spiritually to be
- 8:02able to to find patterns of how to be part of a solution rather
- 8:08than part of a perpetuating and ongoing problem.
- 8:13OK, so let's dive into chapter 25 and look for for powerful
- 8:19principles of this idea of coming together in a covenant
- 8:24community and and seeking for Zion striving to become one as a
- 8:32group of people. So what we have is this label
- 8:38the Nephites. Now into this big group we have
- 8:44King Mosiah, the first group of Nephites, the king to Zerahemla.
- 8:52You have the Mulekites that were living already in Zerahemla and
- 9:01now Zenith left. And now we have Wimhai's people
- 9:07who have escaped their bondage in last week's chapters, and you
- 9:12have Alma's people. So in chapter 25, notice that
- 9:22it's it's King Mosiah the second now, because Mosiah the first
- 9:27his son Benjamin, and then his son Mosiah the second, he's the
- 9:31king. And we've now brought all these
- 9:34people together and it it it's fascinating to watch as this
- 9:41group of the population who has been safe here for the last
- 9:46eight years in Zarahemla listens to the stories of Lemhay and
- 9:51Alma's group and their stories of deliverance after being in
- 9:55bondage and the many afflictions that they experienced in the
- 9:59land of Zarahemla. And notice it says in verse 8.
- 10:04For they knew not what to think. For when they beheld those that
- 10:08had been delivered out of bondage, they were filled with
- 10:11exceedingly great joy. I love that because we talk
- 10:15about mourning with those that mourn and comforting those that
- 10:18stand in need of comfort and helping to bear one another's
- 10:21burdens, willing, willing to do that.
- 10:23In this context you see an additional thing that it's also
- 10:29a a beautiful thing when you can rejoice with those that are
- 10:34rejoicing or joy in those that are experiencing joy or
- 10:40deliverance, not just mourning with those that mourn, but but
- 10:43to celebrate with those that are celebrating these spiritual
- 10:48victories. In this case it says verse 9
- 10:52again. When they thought of their
- 10:54brethren who had been slain by the Lamanites, they were now
- 10:58filled with sorrow, even shed many tears of sorrow.
- 11:03So they're mourning with those that have lost these loved ones.
- 11:06And there there's something comforting about that for this
- 11:09group who has come from outside Limhite's group lost many
- 11:13people. And verse 10 puts the focus
- 11:19right where it belongs. And again, when they thought of
- 11:21the immediate goodness of God and his power in delivering Elma
- 11:26and his brethren out of the hands of the Lamanites, and out
- 11:28of bondage, they did raise their voices and did give thanks to
- 11:32God. But then they turn their focus
- 11:36to the Lamanites who are still in the land of Zarahemwah, and
- 11:41they thought of their sinful and polluted state, and they were
- 11:44filled with pain and anguish for the welfare of their souls.
- 11:49You just saw in, in a course of a few verses from 8:00 to 11:00,
- 11:54you saw three different human sets of emotions that these
- 11:59people have gone through. And there's something beautiful
- 12:03about that. There's something Christ like
- 12:05about that. When a person makes themselves
- 12:09vulnerable to feel what another person is feeling or to feel
- 12:15after somebody based on the condition that they're going
- 12:19through. And that's going to come out
- 12:20throughout the rest of these chapters as well.
- 12:22As you read, notice what what different characters in these
- 12:27stories, different people, are likely to feel emotionally as
- 12:32human beings based on whatever is going on on the page.
- 12:36And then translate that into our own world today.
- 12:41And you'll notice that there there are a lot of negative
- 12:46emotions that won't motivate, that won't encourage improved
- 12:52behavior, that won't accelerate somebody's progress on the
- 12:58covenant path that can actually diminish or or discourage their
- 13:03progress. If we if we use fear tactics or
- 13:06shaming or abusive techniques to try to force or take away agency
- 13:13or compel for any other reason other than loving them and
- 13:21encouraging them and motivating them.
- 13:24That long beautiful list from Doctrine Covenant section 121
- 13:30the Lord gave to the Prophet Joseph Smith when he was in
- 13:33Liberty Jail. These are the the attributes
- 13:39that will truly help motivate people who might be struggling
- 13:45in any way. So listen to this list from the
- 13:48Lord. No power or influence can or
- 13:53ought to be maintained by virtue of the priesthood only by,
- 13:57here's your list, Persuasion by long-suffering, by gentleness
- 14:02and meekness, and by love unfeigned by kindness and pure
- 14:08knowledge, which shall greatly enlarge the soul without
- 14:12hypocrisy and without guile. Reproving the times with
- 14:17sharpness, when moved upon by the Holy Ghost, and then showing
- 14:20forth afterwards an increase of love toward him whom thou hast
- 14:24reproved, lest he esteem need to be his enemy.
- 14:28We are going to see those principles right there from
- 14:31section 121 verse 41 through 43 over and over again in these
- 14:36chapters here as well As for the rest of the Book of Mormon.
- 14:39There is no greater motivator to help encourage people than these
- 14:45open arms of love, kindness, compassion and long-suffering
- 14:49that that we just saw. So after Limhi and Alma have
- 14:54both shared the the stories of their people's deliverance.
- 14:58Then verse 17 says it came to pass it after Alma had taught
- 15:01the people many things and it made an end of speaking to them
- 15:06that King Limhi was desirous that he might be baptized.
- 15:10Remember we we talked about this last week in chapter 21 where
- 15:14he's he's entered into a covenant.
- 15:16He's he's promised the Lord he's going to do this, but he didn't
- 15:20have anyone to baptize him. Now he has.
- 15:23Alma and all his people were desirous that they might be
- 15:29baptized also. Therefore, Alma did go forth
- 15:32into the water and did baptize them.
- 15:34Yeah, he did baptize them after the manner he did his brethren
- 15:37in the waters of Mormon. Yeah.
- 15:39And as many as he did baptized did belong to the Church of God,
- 15:44and that's because of their belief on the words of Elma.
- 15:49So we now have we now have Alma, and we have Mosiah as leadership
- 16:04of the people. Mosiah happens to be the king
- 16:09and Alma happens to be the prophet.
- 16:16So we have church and state and the these two leaders and the
- 16:23king. Mosiah allows Alma this
- 16:26opportunity to establish the church among all the people in
- 16:30Zarahemela. So that's where for the first
- 16:32time in the Book of Mormon, we get this widespread reference to
- 16:37churches being established by God through Alma the prophet
- 16:43under the approval and the the direction of King Mosiah.
- 16:49So as we now jump into Chapter 26, we're going to see this
- 16:52incredible story unfold where Alma the Younger, who spent all
- 17:00this time in the land of Nephi, having incredible experiences
- 17:04with his father and with his people.
- 17:06We don't know how old he was at that time is going to become
- 17:12very close friends with the four sons of Mosiah, Amon, Aaron,
- 17:17Omnar and Hymni, who have stayed in Zarahemla that whole time,
- 17:23who are grandchildren of King Benjamin now.
- 17:28It's fascinating as you open up chapter 26 to see the the stage
- 17:34set for this rising generation and the struggles they're going
- 17:39to face. So notice for instance the the
- 17:44when you're studying scriptures it's it's often easy to just
- 17:50quickly read the the words on the page and miss the the
- 17:54connections or miss some of the repeat concepts.
- 17:59So in this case, just in verse one through 4, notice a word
- 18:03that gets repeated a lot and it's the word not.
- 18:10So. If you look at the page we have
- 18:14verse one, you have two times the word not verse two, you have
- 18:22it one time, verse three you have it one time, and verse four
- 18:29you've got it two times. Now that's the repeat phrase
- 18:35that just keeps coming again and again.
- 18:38Or or word rather. So now let's identify what is
- 18:44the word that comes before it. Now it came to pass that there
- 18:49were many of the rising generation that could not
- 18:53understand the words of King Benjamin.
- 18:55Why couldn't they? It's because they weren't little
- 18:58children at the time that he speak to them.
- 19:02So they it's not their fault. This was a situation where
- 19:07they're not of age. They they couldn't understand
- 19:11what King Benjamin was saying, so they did not believe the
- 19:19tradition of their fathers. This is an amazingly powerful
- 19:24concept when you look also at the repeat of of belief and
- 19:30believe. Because agency is now being
- 19:35used. They did not believe, they, they
- 19:39did not choose to believe. And belief is a choice.
- 19:44Some people feel like they're inadequate in certain settings
- 19:50in in, say, a fast and testimony meeting, because there might be
- 19:53a whole bunch of people telling things that they know, and maybe
- 19:58that person sitting there might feel like a secondary citizen in
- 20:02the Kingdom of God, because they might be saying but, but I don't
- 20:06know. I don't have the certainty that
- 20:08you have, brothers and sisters. It's a gift of the spirit to
- 20:13know certain things, but it's also a gift of the spirit to
- 20:18believe in those who know, like prophets and in the testimony of
- 20:24others. There's nothing wrong with
- 20:26standing at a podium. Or at a pulpit and saying I
- 20:30believe because that's a choice and if you plant that seed of
- 20:35belief and you nurture it, it will grow over time, it will
- 20:39develop in into more sure knowledge over time.
- 20:45So this group of children, this rising generation, little
- 20:49children of the time that King Benjamin gave his talk, they
- 20:52didn't choose to plant those seeds of belief, which now means
- 20:57they did not believe, would have been said concerning the
- 21:02resurrection of the dead. Neither did they believe
- 21:06concerning the coming of Christ. And now, because of their
- 21:10unbelief, they could not understand the word of God, and
- 21:18their hearts were hardened. Are you noticing cause and
- 21:21effect? The cause was they were
- 21:24children, so they couldn't understand because they couldn't
- 21:26understand. Now they allow that to influence
- 21:29their agency, to not believe the tradition of their fathers,
- 21:32which means now they did not believe.
- 21:35They they also choose not to believe concerning the
- 21:37resurrection or the coming of Christ, and so now they could
- 21:41not understand the word of God. So when somebody reads to them
- 21:45the words of King Benjamin or they listen to Alma preaching,
- 21:49they couldn't understand the word of God.
- 21:51It it didn't resonate with them. It didn't sink into their mind
- 21:54and into their heart because they've locked it up with
- 21:57unbelief. They've chosen not to believe,
- 22:00which now leads to they would not be baptized, neither would
- 22:07they join the church. We could say they would not join
- 22:11the church if we wanted to keep the knot pattern going.
- 22:15And they were a separate people as to their faith and remain so
- 22:18ever after even in their carnal and sinful state.
- 22:22For they would not call upon the Lord their God.
- 22:30So could not, leads to did not and and another did not and
- 22:35could not, which now leads to would not that they won't engage
- 22:41on that covenant path, they won't move forward, which leads
- 22:47to all kinds of concern for Elma and Mosiah, the leader of the
- 22:54church and the leader of the Kingdom.
- 22:57So the outcome of this rising generation choosing not to
- 23:02believe, choosing not to engage with the words of the prophets
- 23:07and the words of the scriptures and and the words of the Lord.
- 23:10Ultimately it leads to verse 5-6 and seven.
- 23:15Where for instance in verse six it says it came to pass that
- 23:18they did deceive many with their flattering words who were in the
- 23:21church, and it caused them to commit many sins.
- 23:26They deceived them. They're teaching now false
- 23:32doctrines and they're couching them in a way that they look
- 23:36believable. They look good.
- 23:38They look like something that a a person would want to embrace.
- 23:43Remember our activity at the beginning?
- 23:45It's very easy to make bad look good and to make good look evil.
- 23:52And that's exactly what's going on here.
- 23:54So now Alma, as the head of the church, has all of these people
- 23:58brought before him with accusations from other members
- 24:01of the church about the bad things that they're doing.
- 24:04And Alma says, Oh, well, let me take these people and have King
- 24:11Mosiah judge them. And so as he brings these
- 24:17problems before the king, Messiah says, I'm not going to
- 24:22judge them, you're going to judge them.
- 24:25And he sends them right back to Elma for for judgment.
- 24:32And Elma doesn't have a clue what to do about this.
- 24:38This is one of the the most incredible chapters of
- 24:42scripture. For a parent, for a leader, for
- 24:47a friend who finds him or herself in a situation where,
- 24:52quite honestly, they they can identify the problem, they they
- 24:55can see what's going wrong, but they don't have any idea how to
- 25:00help or how to fix that problem. This becomes kind of the first
- 25:05general handbook of instructions for how to run a membership
- 25:10council in the church, what used to be called a disciplinary
- 25:15council. But I love that the adjustment
- 25:17now to being a membership council because it's not a
- 25:22punitive thing. A membership council is convened
- 25:26or or called in order to figure out the best way to help a child
- 25:32of God to be able to most effectively and and quickly move
- 25:38forward on the covenant path, to be able to repent and to be able
- 25:43to have the Savior provide whatever healing is needed or or
- 25:49most necessary at that time. And in this case Alma goes to
- 25:53the Lord, and he doesn't have any idea what to do.
- 25:59And so he says, verse 13 The spirit of Elma was again
- 26:04troubled, And he went, and he inquired of the Lord what he
- 26:06should do concerning this matter.
- 26:08For he feared that he should do wrong in the sight of God.
- 26:13And it came to pass that after he had poured out his whole soul
- 26:16to God, the voice of the Lord came to him, saying, And now he
- 26:22gets the instructions. Blessed art thou, Elma, and
- 26:27blessed are they who are baptized in the waters of
- 26:29Mormon. Thou art blessed because of thy
- 26:32exceeding faith in the words alone of my servant of Benedai.
- 26:37So, Alma, you're blessed because you chose to believe the words
- 26:42of the Benedai, which now became knowledge, and it became a part
- 26:47of your soul, deeply rooted. And now we're seeing the fruits
- 26:51of of Alma's life. This concept reminds me of a
- 26:55powerful teaching from President Delanie Chokes in his October
- 27:022023 general conference address called Kingdoms of Glory.
- 27:08He says this. The Apostle Paul taught that the
- 27:11Lord's teachings and commandments were given that we
- 27:14may all attain quote the measure of the stature of the fullness
- 27:20of Christ. Then he says this That process
- 27:25requires far more than acquiring knowledge.
- 27:28It is not even enough to be convinced of the gospel.
- 27:33We must act so that we are converted by it.
- 27:38In contrast to other preaching which teaches us to know
- 27:42something, the gospel of Jesus Christ challenges us to become
- 27:48something. The story of Alma is is a
- 27:53perfect fit for this doctrine of or for this teaching that he
- 27:58didn't just sit and listen to a Benedi and believe the words of
- 28:02a Benedi. He didn't just learn a few
- 28:05gospel facts. He didn't prepare for a final
- 28:08exam on on a in a religion course.
- 28:11He actually has implemented those teachings.
- 28:14They've become a part of his thoughts, his feelings, his
- 28:18actions, his behavior, his character has been shaped by
- 28:24these things. He is converted.
- 28:27He's all in. The Lord doesn't have to wonder,
- 28:30and Alma doesn't have to wonder. If if he's committed to the
- 28:37Lord, he's all in, and the Lord's reminding him of that
- 28:41here in these verses, and He's blessing Alma.
- 28:48It's a beautiful thing to read passages like this beginning
- 28:53especially in verse 15, where the Lord is consoling or
- 28:58comforting or or lifting up one of His servants, and to try to
- 29:05hear the voice of the Lord. Translating that and likening
- 29:09those same things to you in in your world, in your experiences.
- 29:17And notice how many times He uses the word blessed and the
- 29:22the the reasons why this individual is blessed.
- 29:25And quite frankly the reason why you are more blessed than than
- 29:30you probably think you are. Moving forward.
- 29:33As you get into verse 817-1819 and just keep going down this
- 29:40incredible section, watch for the words my, mine, and I, these
- 29:51personal pronouns. Watch how the Lord is helping
- 29:57Elma, this leader of all of these churches in Zarahemla.
- 30:04Notice how he's describing this bottom of verse 17.
- 30:09They shall be my people. He doesn't say Elma, they're
- 30:13going to be your people. God is claiming them.
- 30:16Verse 18. Blessed is this people who are
- 30:19willing to bear my name, for in my name shall it be called, And
- 30:24they are mine. Because thou hast inquired of me
- 30:30concerning the transgressor. Thou art blessed, Thou art my
- 30:37servant, and I covenant with thee, that thou shalt have
- 30:42eternal life. Thou shalt serve me and go forth
- 30:45in my name, and shall gather together my sheep.
- 30:49These are such beautiful versus setting this relationship
- 30:55between God and us. Very clearly defined in this, in
- 31:02this connection, that it's his work.
- 31:06These are his people. If you have children who are
- 31:10struggling, if you have children who who are going astray,
- 31:16remember they were Heavenly Father's children before they
- 31:20were yours. They're they're his.
- 31:24He's given them to you. And he didn't give them to you
- 31:28to condemn them or to discourage them.
- 31:33He gave them to you to keep working with them.
- 31:36And some of those godly attributes come into play here.
- 31:40Patient, long-suffering, merciful, loving.
- 31:46And you allow time, this, this long-suffering and patience
- 31:50takes time. And sometimes they're going to
- 31:53have to experience some terrible things, as we're going to see in
- 31:56this in this chapter, before they turn around.
- 32:00But love will be the the the greatest motivator for them to
- 32:05make that that converting transition in life to come back
- 32:11to the fold, or back to the church, or back to the family.
- 32:15Notice he describes in verse 22 and 23.
- 32:18For behold, this is my church. Whosoever is baptized shall be
- 32:23baptized unto repentance, and whosoever you shall receive
- 32:26shall believe in my name, and him will I freely forgive.
- 32:32So if you've struggled with things in the past, the Devil
- 32:36would want you to be defined and anchored to those problems in
- 32:41the past that would hold you back and make you feel unworthy,
- 32:46eternally, perpetually unworthy of the Saviour's loving grace
- 32:51and His mercy and His Infinite Atonement.
- 32:54But if we choose to think celestial, as President Nelson
- 32:58has emphasized, then we won't allow the the, the Adversary or
- 33:04anybody else to define us by our past mistakes.
- 33:10But we will be making a choice to believe in the reality that
- 33:17Jesus Christ can change our hearts and our lives.
- 33:20And we define us by our glorious and hope filled future moving
- 33:27forward, that if we will repent the promises, I will freely
- 33:32forgive them from the Lord. For it is I that taketh upon me
- 33:37the sins of the world, for it is I that hath created them.
- 33:41It is I that granteth unto him that believeth unto the end a
- 33:46place at my right hand. Are you noticing the the
- 33:53continuation of these personal pronouns?
- 33:55Verse 24 through 30? You're you're read those verses
- 33:59carefully. You're going to see it over and
- 34:01over and over again. More personal pronouns for the
- 34:06Lord in these chap. In this chapter, in verses 17
- 34:12through 30 than any other place that I can find in scripture.
- 34:17It is constant. He's reminding Alma whose work
- 34:21this really is and what Alma's role really is, which now
- 34:25liberates this incredibly devoted and faithful prophet to
- 34:31be able to do the Lord's work rather than trying to do Alma's
- 34:37own work and get it wrong. It's such a beautiful passage.
- 34:42If you're in any kind of leadership position and
- 34:45struggling to know what to do or how to fix a problem, or if
- 34:50you're a parent or a grandparent or a sibling, I would highly
- 34:53encourage that you prayerfully and carefully and deeply study
- 35:00Mosiah 26, verse 15 through 30. Now as we get done, he he
- 35:08describes the process of forgiveness versus those who
- 35:12refuse to repent. Their names are going to be
- 35:15blotted out, not because we hate them, not because we want to
- 35:18curse them, but because that is what's going to help them the
- 35:22most. To be able to eventually repent
- 35:27and make it onto the covenant path rather than telling them,
- 35:30yeah, you can stay in in the church and keep doing everything
- 35:36that you're doing these serious sins, that's not helping them,
- 35:40That's not going to encourage them to repent or to connect
- 35:43with the Savior. And so as we open up Chapter 27,
- 35:49we learn this sad reality for Alma and Mosiah, that their own
- 35:56sons are causing major, major problems.
- 36:02In verse eight it says now the sons of Mosiah were numbered
- 36:05among the unbelievers, and also one of the sons of Elma was
- 36:08numbered among them. He being called Elma after his
- 36:13father, nevertheless he became a very wicked and an idolatrous
- 36:17man, and he was a man of many words and didn't speak much
- 36:21flattery to the people. Therefore he led many of the
- 36:24people to do after the manner of his iniquities.
- 36:29So here you have these two fathers who are doing everything
- 36:32they can to build up the Kingdom of God and to build up the the
- 36:36rule of law and order in the nation.
- 36:40And their very own children are going around secretly trying to
- 36:45tear down the work that their fathers are doing.
- 36:49So what did they do? These parents poured their
- 36:55hearts out to the Lord for help, for a miracle, for solutions.
- 37:02Now in their case, they got a very dramatic answer to those
- 37:08prayers. And that may not be the case for
- 37:12you or for me, that it plays out exactly the way it does in this
- 37:16chapter for our loved ones. But the point is, God will honor
- 37:24and respect the faith, the dedication, the devotion, the
- 37:29consecration of parents, of siblings of leaders as they pour
- 37:34out their hearts for those who may be struggling, those
- 37:38solutions, those miracles, in whatever form they may take in
- 37:42your circle of influence, they some of them may come in this
- 37:47life, but some may not come until the next life.
- 37:51But it doesn't change the fact that we can't take away their
- 37:54agency. Therefore, what we can do is
- 37:57keep loving, persuading with gentleness and weakness and love
- 38:03and faint. All that.
- 38:04That list from section 121. We can keep doing those things
- 38:09over time and allow the Lord to keep working with those
- 38:13individuals. Yeah, according to his time
- 38:16frame. So as you read the the story
- 38:20here in chapter 27 and and study it, hopefully you will see not
- 38:27this extreme example of a miracle and think well that
- 38:29would never happen for me. But rather hopefully you'll find
- 38:32principles of being able to call down the powers of heaven in
- 38:37behalf of loved ones. Mommies and daddies have an
- 38:45amazing ability to be able to bless the lives of their
- 38:51children instead of cursing their children, instead of
- 38:57shaming their children, instead of kicking out their children.
- 39:04What an amazing opportunity is for parents within certain
- 39:09within reason. There may be situations where
- 39:12you have to take more direct action, reproving the times with
- 39:17sharpness, but then showing that increase of love and that might
- 39:20look differently for different families in different settings.
- 39:24But the point is, is that that individual feels the love and
- 39:29hope that is being instilled and belief in their future capacity
- 39:36to be able to connect with the Lord in in whatever way that
- 39:39may, in whatever form that may take in your family or with your
- 39:45your the people that you're serving.
- 39:48So you watch that story unfold here in Mosiah Chapter 27.
- 39:53And then Elma after having seen this Angel who has has stopped
- 39:59him on the path of going around and destroyed the church along
- 40:02with four sons of Mosiah. He is now out in in this
- 40:09completely passed out state for three days where his soul is
- 40:15being wracked with eternal torment.
- 40:17And we pick that story up when he tells his own version of the
- 40:21story. To his son Healman in Alma
- 40:25chapter 36. So he we get that part later.
- 40:29But here after he he is revived. People have been gathered.
- 40:35He tells initially his story. Bottom of verse 28 says, I am
- 40:40born of God, and now 29 my soul has been redeemed from the gall
- 40:44of bitterness and bonds of iniquity.
- 40:47I was in the darkest abyss. Now I behold the marvelous light
- 40:52of God. My soul was wracked with eternal
- 40:55torment, but I am snatched, and my soul is pained no more.
- 41:00That's the message for any of you who are suffering or who
- 41:02have loved ones who are suffering, is to hold on to that
- 41:06hope, that belief, that that trust in the Savior Jesus
- 41:10Christ. That he can help bring about a
- 41:14rebirth for you or for any of your loved ones who might be
- 41:18struggling. That there is this incredible
- 41:21redemptive power that this earth can't describe and that the
- 41:26devil will push against and fight against and and try to
- 41:30make you feel like everybody's losing their faith and
- 41:34everybody's leaving the Church and everything's going going to
- 41:38pot, when in reality there are more miracles, more temples,
- 41:46more missionaries, more people studying, more scriptures than
- 41:50ever in the history of the world.
- 41:51Are there some leaving the faith?
- 41:53Absolutely. Is that a tragedy?
- 41:55Yes, but it's not an an eternal destiny for them.
- 42:01God is accelerating his work. There are more incredible things
- 42:06happening now than ever before in the history of of the world
- 42:10regarding the spreading of the work on both sides of the veil.
- 42:14There was never a better time to engage deeply with with our
- 42:18faith, with repentance, with baptism, and with spreading the
- 42:24the light of the Holy Ghost everywhere we can.
- 42:29So now you come down to what I consider to be kind of the
- 42:34thesis statement for this this whole section of the scriptures.
- 42:41Look at the bottom of verse 30, Alma.
- 42:44After telling the people that he had rejected his Redeemer, he
- 42:47said that he remembered that the Lord remembereth every creature
- 42:51of his creating, and he will make himself manifest unto all
- 42:55that wasn't just manifest unto those who are keeping the
- 42:57commandments. It's He will.
- 42:59He will in his own time, in his own way he will make his himself
- 43:04manifest unto all, Yeah, every knee shall bow, and every tongue
- 43:11confessed before him. Yeah, even at the last day when
- 43:14all men shall stand to be judged of him, then shall they confess
- 43:17that he is God. And then shall they confess who
- 43:21live without God in the world, that the judgement of an
- 43:23everlasting punishment is just upon them.
- 43:26And they shall quake and tremble and shrink beneath the glance of
- 43:29his all searching eye. That's coming from a guy who had
- 43:32just barely been snatched from this eternal torment from the
- 43:38bonds of iniquity as he describes them.
- 43:41And his point is God is going to to bring everybody to Him.
- 43:47Our job is to try to bring them to him as early as possible
- 43:52before this great and last day. That's why there's so much
- 43:56emphasis by our prophets, sears and revelators on the gathering
- 43:59of Israel on both sides of the veil, rather than to say, Adrian
- 44:02can be married tomorrow. We die, and it will be well with
- 44:06us because it won't be well with us unless we choose to, to come
- 44:12unto Christ and allow him to cleanse us.
- 44:17Which now brings us to Chapter 28, the last chapter.
- 44:22I love this because these four sons of Mosiah and Alma, they
- 44:27didn't just believe, they didn't just gain a knowledge of God's
- 44:33goodness. As President Oakes's quote
- 44:36mentioned, they have become something different.
- 44:41They've become converted, and because of that conversion,
- 44:46they're no longer content to just quietly go to church
- 44:50themselves and enjoy the blessings of the gospel for
- 44:53themselves. They were on the verge of
- 44:59eternal destruction, and they recognize God's goodness in
- 45:02bringing them into the arms of His safety, into those
- 45:06covenantal connecting powerful ordinances and doctrines of the
- 45:12gospel that connected them to Him.
- 45:15And now they're looking horizontally, saying we have to
- 45:18bring everybody we can into this same powerful covenant that the
- 45:25Lord has made with us, and the thought that anybody would
- 45:29perish. Notice that it says now they
- 45:32were desirous that salvation should be declared to every
- 45:35creature, for they could not bear that any human soul should
- 45:40perish. Even the very thoughts that any
- 45:44soul should endure endless torment did 'cause them to quake
- 45:48and tremble, and thus did the Spirit of the Lord work upon
- 45:52them. For they were the very vilest of
- 45:55sinners, and the Lord saw fit in His infinite mercy to spare
- 45:59them. Nevertheless, they suffered much
- 46:02anguish of soul because of their iniquities, suffering much and
- 46:05fearing that they should be cast off forever.
- 46:08But now they no longer need to fear that they they are no
- 46:11longer defined by their low point of life or by their poor
- 46:16decisions of their youth. They're not allowing their
- 46:19younger self to hold their current self hostage and to hold
- 46:24them back. They're moving forward with
- 46:27Christ on this path, bringing as many people as possible.
- 46:31And so they plead with their dad Ammon, Aaron, Amnor and Himnay
- 46:36plead with King Mosiah. Let us go up to the land of
- 46:40Nephiah and teach the the Lamanites their enemies.
- 46:44The thought of them, of any of those Lamanites perishing just
- 46:48caused them great anguish. And you can imagine King Mosiah
- 46:51sending these four potential heirs to the Nephite throne to
- 46:56the enemies. He's not excited about that, but
- 47:00they keep asking so much. They're so converted, and
- 47:04they're moved by the Lord to do this.
- 47:06This wasn't them making this up. They're inspired to do this.
- 47:10And so King Mosiah goes to the Lord and hears his promise in
- 47:13verse 7. And the Lord said unto Mosiah,
- 47:17let them go up, for many shall believe on their words, and they
- 47:22shall have eternal life. And I will deliver thy sons out
- 47:26of the hands of the lame rights. Mosiah doesn't know all of the
- 47:30details of what's going to happen on their mission.
- 47:32That that Mormon will pick up for us in in Alma chapter 17
- 47:36through 25. Mosiah may not see all of those
- 47:40details, but he knows enough. He knows enough to trust that
- 47:45God is going to take those sons of His and use them as
- 47:49instruments to do an amazing work to do a great work among
- 47:53the Lamanites. And he will protect them.
- 47:57They will not be destroyed by going on this mission.
- 48:03It's an amazing thing when a parent or a leader or or a
- 48:07family member receives that assurance from the Lord that
- 48:13things will work out. We may not know exactly how
- 48:16they're going to work out, but we get that calm, quiet, steady
- 48:22reassurance that nobody can give to you, only the Lord himself.
- 48:27Nobody can convince you, but the Holy Ghost can carry message
- 48:31deep into your heart that a child or a loved one or somebody
- 48:35that you're serving in a calling the the Good Shepherd is
- 48:40watching over that sheep and he's going to keep working with
- 48:43that sheep. And my role is to do everything
- 48:46I can to to work with the Lord in that effort and things will
- 48:51work out. We don't know how, but there's
- 48:54something powerful to get that reassurance from heaven that
- 48:58they will work out. And then we can kind of let go
- 49:01of the anxiety and the frustrations with the current
- 49:05behaviors. And instead of having the
- 49:08present person hold their future person hostage, we can let go of
- 49:14that. And it changes the relationship.
- 49:17We look at them differently. We talk to them differently.
- 49:20They feel our love. They feel our compassion, our
- 49:25empathy. They are more open when the time
- 49:29is right for us to share little principles of the gospel, little
- 49:34seeds that might sink a little deeper into their heart than
- 49:37before, and germinate into a small belief which can then grow
- 49:42into this tree of knowledge and testimony, ultimately springing
- 49:47up into a tree of life for them. May the Lord bless us as we not
- 49:53just study these chapters where there are these incredible
- 49:59difficulties going on and incredible solutions coming.
- 50:04May the Lord bless us to be able to see the application of these
- 50:08principles in our own circles of influence today.
- 50:13With the person looking at us in the mirror, with our loved ones,
- 50:17in our immediate family and our extended family, and in our our
- 50:21workplaces, our colleagues, and with members of our wards,
- 50:26branches, our stakes, our corns, our classes.
- 50:30God is so kind. He is the Good Shepherd and we
- 50:36are His sheep. And He's called many of us, many
- 50:42of you, to be under shepherds with him, to teach and to reach
- 50:49and to love the sheep the way He loves them.
- 50:53Not taking away their agency, not condemning them, not beating
- 50:56them up, but trying to help them find the covenant path and to
- 51:01truly connect with the Savior and repent and be in a covenant
- 51:07relationship with him forever. How the Lord loves us and how I
- 51:14love him. And I leave that with you.
- 51:18In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen, now that you're cuffed.
