I'm calling it. That's not the deal. You can have both. I have built businesses for the last 16 years as a single mom. And you can do it without hustling yourself into the ground, but by choosing strategically every single day. This show is for the woman who wants the business, the brand, the freedom, and the family. All of it. So grab your coffee, your kids' juice box, whatever you got in your hand. Let's get into it. Kelly Jedele: 17 years in business did not cost me money. It cost me happy hours, friendships, sleep-ins, and plane tickets. Here's what I want to share about what I had to give up in order to build my business of the last 17 years. Hi, thank you so much for coming and listening to the Kelly Yately Show. Welcome back. It's great to have you here. Today I want to talk about something that people don't talk about a lot, what you actually have to give up. up in order to be a business owner. And it's really sexy to say that you own a business and that you have all these clients and you're making millions of dollars. It's really sexy. It's really fun. And there's a whole nother side of it of things that we actually have to say no to along the way. And I know this for a fact. My life has been a lot of focus and a lot of joy and a lot of success. And inside of all of that is a lot of things that I say no to. So I want to share a few things that I say no to on a regular basis right now in this new season of having a new business. And it reminds me of when I started my cleaning company 17 years ago. So there's many things that we get to say yes to as business owners. There's many opportunities and things that come your way just because you get to have new things and you get to have opportunities that A lot of people don't have, like normal people that have regular jobs, don't get invited to Chamber of Commerce meetings or networking meetings a lot or just different things, podcasts and you know, just fun stuff. Like it's it's a it's a great way to be in life and I really enjoy it. And the networking opportunity is really super fun and it has been over the years to create friendships with other business owners and other women that are out there just really killing it in in life. So, but today I want to share with you four things that I'm giving I have given up currently and in the past. So the first one is I really broke up with my social life. Like that is something that I really haven't completely been okay with in my lifetime as a business owner, but it's also something that has made me razor sharp and focused. I've had to say no to people that want me to be in certain groups or organizations or things that are that are social and I have time for some of that and I will say yes to some things and I feel like I'm always saying no, especially lately. Like I've been invited to some really fun girl groups and I just can't. It's just I the focus that I need in order to get the things done that I'm doing is just just so intense right now. And so I've had to say no a lot. So if you're saying no in your life, it's it's it's not cold. It's just necessary in order to get everything done. And I'm an empty nester right now. So it's just me and my dog. Like I remember back when Carly was little and I had we didn't have a dog at the time, but I mean I had her full entire child actor life and ch in just school, like getting her to school. I remember the first time that she had been in preschool and they reminded me like, kindergarten starts at seven forty five. You gotta get to get her to school by seven thirty. And I was like, every day I remembered that. I was like, my gosh, my life is about to change. Cause back then I was in sales and I could, you know, show up to my first client around nine and they didn't really want me there earlier. So I dropped her off at like on the way, eight forty-five, and then started my day. Not once she got into school. It was a different story. So we got earlier bedtimes. So another thing that I've had to give up over the years, and I've done it at different times, and I'm doing it again right now, is no to alcohol. And this is not because I don't enjoy it, quite the opposite. But one thing for me with alcohol, and I don't know if this is it for you, but it it messes with my emotions. So if I have a glass of wine or an old fashioned or a glass of rose or a vodka soda, sorry. If I have an alco drink of alcohol, the next morning I'm feeling a little blue, I'm feeling a little my my energy is drained, I'm a little less myself, I'm not as high energy. And I've noticed that over the years and it's not okay with me. So right now and I mean like PS, it dehydrates you, so I'm worried about my voice. And it also messes with my sleep. And not to mention like the weight loss issue and all of that. So I mean there's many, many reasons to say no, and it's not fun. I have recently had mocktail a few times and I've tried non-alcoholic beers because it used to just be odules and now they have different kinds. So I'm not always wanting to pay nine dollars for a noc for a mocktail or you know, seven dollars for a non-alcoholic beer, but sometimes it's fun to play, you know, with the other with the other kids, and it's also I really enjoy a beer with a hamburger. So I've done that a couple times where I've had a now non-alcoholic beer with my meal and just to be with friends. And it's really just a handful of times that I've done that recently because it still has all the carbs. my gosh, all of the challenges of life, right? So I have said no to alcohol recently. I don't know if that will be a forever thing. Right now it's a no for now, and I'm in this really like intense. time of growing and so it just makes more sense for me but I can't really afford like the foggy brain and the emotional trap that it it offers me right now and I'm just not a I'm not a fan. I've also said no to the opportunity to go out to parties and late nights. I don't go out as much dancing right now. And all of that is its own version of good and hard. I am in bed by nine. I wake up around four, four thirty every day. And that rhythm has been that way for a long time now. And I love it. I am building a beautiful business that that outlasts all of the wild weekends, right? It it the the rest for me is not being lazy. It's not going to bed because I cause I I don't because I want to. I'm doing it because I'm processing information and I want to be at my peak best. every single day. And that requires sleep. And for me, that's a little over seven hours. Like the magical middle for me is like seven hours and twenty minutes. I don't know. I've done eight, that's a little too much. I've done six, that's not quite enough. But sometimes if I go to bed knowing that I have seven and a half hours in bed, then that gives me enough time to fall asleep, sleep and stay asleep and then get feel rested the next day. And everyone is different. I know bodies are different, different times of age and depending on, you know, your activity level and all of that, I think it's it it all matters. But for me, it's the most underrated thing if we're not getting it. And if if we are getting it, it doesn't really matter. So it's one of those things you've got to just keep going and just allow time for it. And who was it recently that said, it's Dan Martell, who said he actually has an alarm for bedtime at night because it's easy to have an alarm in the morning. But when it's eight fifteen at night, I need to start shutting it down because I've got to get in bed by eight forty-five so that I can say no to all of my apps by nine o'clock to go to sleep. And that's being generous, right? 'Cause I love to be scrolling in my bed. That's horrible. And I just recently had my bed, I was had a really good routine of having my phone charging in my bathroom and now it's charging next to my bed again because I got a cool little prize, a little gift of a charger that sits next to my bed. So I gotta redo that. Thanks for the gift and I gotta change that. So and then the final thing that I have given up and hopefully this isn't forever, but I've turned down trips. So girls' trips, opportunities for work, gifts from partners, gifts from people that are possibly interested. I've said no to things because I am focused on building this opportunity for me for a legacy for a long time. And so taking my eye off of that gets really complicated. My people are just in the beginning stages of getting everything together and learning all of the the just the playbooks and the SOPs of of my world. And so I want to make sure that I'm a part of that. Now that's not forever and we do have remote work and working off of your computer is definitely something. But I've I I know over the years, that's one thing that I have had to say no to. And I I realize that the game of it all is to stay together for yourself and focus on what matters for you. So if you're saying no to things in your life because of your business, because you're focused, that is the only reason that you need to think of. There's not anybody else's opinion in that. If you're not doing something that someone else thinks you should and that just doesn't work for you. You just listen to you. We women know what's right. We trust our instincts. For me right now, also food, I'm really tight with my food. I caught myself eating Oreos yesterday. Girl, what are you doing? I haven't done that in months. You know, it's stressful sometimes and when I'm stressed, my body craves sugar. And so I know that's a red flag. When I'm craving sugar, I know that's a red flag, and I gotta pull back and ask myself what I'm dealing with. What emotion is going through my head? Am I scared? Am I tired? Am I overwhelmed? Am I sad? Like, ask myself those questions so that I can be the best version of me for myself and for the lead for being a leader. Like that's what I want. So it's a little sexy to be a business owner, isn't it? But it's even sexier when you're taking care of yourself. So that your business scales and grows without you even present. So I hope these pi these little tips kind of just help you and allow you some freedom to say no and to know that it's okay. You're not the only one. And when you're hanging out with other people that are doing big things, these are just normal things. It's not, it's not ad abnormal to do these things. So find yourself with other people that are doing these exact type of op of Things to give you opportunities that you know that you need in your life. So thank you for listening.
