- 0:01Speaker 1: When the Kalamazoo police were called out to a student
- 0:03Speaker 1: apartment building on a spring night in 2018, they believed
- 0:07Speaker 1: they were responding to a report like any other. A
- 0:11Speaker 1: Western Michigan University student, 24-year-old Anaya Mack, had been out
- 0:16Speaker 1: of touch with friends for a few days. It was
- 0:20Speaker 1: unusual behavior, though police found no signs of foul play,
- 0:25Speaker 1: just oddities around her home that no one could explain.
- 0:29Speaker 1: That is, until an unexpected encounter outside of her home
- 0:33Speaker 1: that broke the case wide open and uncovered a shocking
- 0:37Speaker 1: secret in the young student's life that no one saw coming.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Hi there, I'm Kevin and welcome to Just Thought Lounge.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Today's case begins with a routine, albeit worrying, police response
- 0:53Speaker 1: to a potential missing persons report. But after that, it
- 0:57Speaker 1: does not unravel in a way anyone is expecting. Let's
- 1:02Speaker 1: take a look. In the early morning hours of Thursday,
- 1:19Speaker 1: June 28th, 2018, officers from the Kalamazoo Police Department responded
- 1:25Speaker 1: to a call at the Hunter Ridge Apartments in West Michigan.
- 1:28Speaker 1: The complex is composed of a multi-story, multi-unit apartment building
- 1:33Speaker 1: with a parking lot. The building is off-campus housing. All
- 1:37Speaker 1: of the residents are local college students. Officers were there
- 1:41Speaker 1: to look for 24-year-old Anaya Mack, a psychology major studying
- 1:45Speaker 1: at Western Michigan University. No one had heard from Anaya
- 1:49Speaker 1: since the previous Sunday. Anaya, as she was known by
- 1:52Speaker 1: those close to her, was a social butterfly, always active
- 1:56Speaker 1: and engaged in a range of activities. In high school,
- 1:59Speaker 1: she was an honor roll student on the Students' Council,
- 2:02Speaker 1: in the Health Occupations Association, the marching band, the concert band,
- 2:06Speaker 1: varsity cheerleading, volleyball, and softball. In college, she still sang
- 2:11Speaker 1: in the church choir and danced with the WMU All
- 2:15Speaker 1: Girls dance group. To be out of contact with so
- 2:18Speaker 1: many friends for even a few hours, certainly several days,
- 2:22Speaker 1: was extremely uncharacteristic of Anaya. Good friend LaQuenta Watson phoned
- 2:29Speaker 1: police in Kalamazoo. She told them that she usually spoke
- 2:33Speaker 1: with Anaya every day. When she hadn't heard from her
- 2:35Speaker 1: after a couple of days, she grew suspicious. Calls went
- 2:39Speaker 1: straight to voicemail. Her suspicions grew when she went to
- 2:42Speaker 1: Anaya's new job at the Great Lakes Alternative Research Center,
- 2:46Speaker 1: where she worked with autistic children. They told her that
- 2:49Speaker 1: Anaya had failed to report to work two days in
- 2:52Speaker 1: a row. She had only landed the position three months
- 2:55Speaker 1: prior and was thrilled to have found the role. There
- 2:58Speaker 1: was no way she would choose to blow off work
- 3:00Speaker 1: unless something serious had occurred. Childhood friend Dominic Thomas met
- 3:05Speaker 1: with police at the apartment building. After speaking with Anaya's mother, Loretta,
- 3:10Speaker 1: in Louisiana, as well as LaQuenta, all three had grown
- 3:13Speaker 1: increasingly concerned over their inability to reach her.
- 3:18Speaker 2: It's unlikely to just not answer the phone, it sounds like.
- 3:23Speaker 3: If anything is going on, I'm pretty much the only
- 3:26Speaker 3: person that she has here besides her family.
- 3:28Speaker 4: But me and her, we have been best friends for.
- 3:31Speaker 3: 24, I'm only 24, but we have been best friends
- 3:34Speaker 3: our entire being, basically.
- 3:37Speaker 5: I got friends like that.
- 3:38Speaker 6: And it was just, it.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Was driving me real crazy that if anything was going on,
- 3:44Speaker 3: she would call me.
- 3:46Speaker 7: If nobody, she would call me.
- 3:47Speaker 3: I know for a fact.
- 3:48Speaker 4: She had any medical issues?
- 3:51Speaker 5: No. No psychological orders?
- 3:54Speaker 8: Did she take any medication for anything?
- 3:57Speaker 4: As of right now, not.
- 3:59Speaker 5: To my knowledge.
- 4:01Speaker 8: Did she ever have any drug abuse issues?
- 4:04Speaker 5: No.
- 4:05Speaker 4: I mean, I'm not talking marijuana, so that's almost legal,
- 4:07Speaker 4: but harder stuff than that.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Officers learned that Anaya owned a white 2008 Malibu, which
- 4:16Speaker 1: they spotted in the parking lot without a license plate.
- 4:19Speaker 1: In a spot nearby was a second, nearly identical vehicle.
- 4:24Speaker 1: That second Malibu had Anaya's plates attached, but was registered
- 4:28Speaker 1: to a man named Gustavo. Both vehicles had two flat tires,
- 4:33Speaker 1: and neither appeared to be drivable. There was a light
- 4:37Speaker 1: on inside her apartment, and it appeared there was a
- 4:39Speaker 1: television on, though no one was answering the door.
- 4:42Speaker 9: Did you hear what I found out about the plates?
- 4:48Speaker 4: Her car, her Malibu.
- 4:50Speaker 6: Over there in the corner, the plates missing off of it.
- 4:53Speaker 4: I found it on another Malibu a.
- 4:54Speaker 7: Couple spots down. It's not registered to her, which is
- 5:08Speaker 7: kind of strange.
- 5:09Speaker 6: Somebody swapped the plates.
- 5:10Speaker 4: On the car?
- 5:11Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 5:11Speaker 4: There's a white Malibu that comes back to her by
- 5:13Speaker 4: the bin. No plate. The plate that belongs on it
- 5:16Speaker 4: is on another Malibu. A few spots down, another white Malibu.
- 5:20Speaker 7: Somebody else's name.
- 5:21Speaker 5: Gustavo Fella? Yeah.
- 5:23Speaker 7: Hi, is this Cora? Cora, this is a 90s best friend.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Are you at home?
- 5:32Speaker 4: Anaya has been missing for two days.
- 5:35Speaker 5: To my understanding.
- 5:36Speaker 8: I drove right over here from Muskegon because I.
- 5:41Speaker 7: Yes, because the police are here as well. Is she
- 5:48Speaker 7: up there?
- 5:48Speaker 5: She's coming here. Okay, thank you.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Dominic told officers that Anaya had some issues in the
- 5:55Speaker 1: past with her boyfriend, 25-year-old Donovan Lewis. Donovan, or Donnie
- 6:00Speaker 1: as friends called him, was a former community college basketball
- 6:03Speaker 1: player and YMCA lifeguard. He had recently returned to Kalamazoo
- 6:08Speaker 1: after a short stay with his brother in Indianapolis. There,
- 6:12Speaker 1: he had interned at a multimedia company, though now that
- 6:15Speaker 1: he had returned to Michigan, Donovan had taken whatever job
- 6:18Speaker 1: he could find. For the last week and a half,
- 6:21Speaker 1: he had been working the night shift as a janitor
- 6:23Speaker 1: at a large local manufacturing firm.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Have there been any issues with him that you know of?
- 6:29Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 6:31Speaker 3: There's been several occasions that.
- 6:32Speaker 7: They've been back and forth.
- 6:36Speaker 2: I know one time the police was called. Say they
- 6:38Speaker 2: ever escalate the violence, really? He threw water on her
- 6:43Speaker 2: several times. He took off in her car when she
- 6:46Speaker 2: came out. She was getting ready to talk to him.
- 6:49Speaker 2: He brought her arm up in the window and liked to.
- 6:51Speaker 7: Drag her down the street.
- 6:54Speaker 1: When Cora arrived to let the search party into the apartment,
- 6:57Speaker 1: she told officers Lockett and Labretto that it was common
- 7:01Speaker 1: for her and Anaya not to cross paths for days
- 7:04Speaker 1: at a time. They had been assigned as roommates less
- 7:07Speaker 1: than a year earlier, an assignment made by the organizers
- 7:10Speaker 1: of the student building.
- 7:13Speaker 5: When's the last time you were here before? This morning.
- 7:17Speaker 12: I came back from work around like 6 and I
- 7:19Speaker 12: went to the movies.
- 7:20Speaker 5: And I came back here. When's the last time you
- 7:22Speaker 5: saw her? Not before Saturday.
- 7:25Speaker 10: I left home for graduation.
- 7:26Speaker 5: I graduated Saturday. This is her room right here.
- 7:29Speaker 13: But someone was here today because they turned on the
- 7:37Speaker 13: air and they put some clothes in the washer.
- 7:39Speaker 5: So when I was gone, I thought maybe she came.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Have you seen her boyfriend around here?
- 7:44Speaker 6: I haven't seen anybody, honestly.
- 7:47Speaker 13: But I left for the weekend, so I thought maybe
- 7:48Speaker 13: she just went home.
- 7:49Speaker 11: But I really haven't seen her.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Nothing looks out of the ordinary here.
- 7:58Speaker 7: Obviously, boyfriend probably doesn't exist.
- 8:00Speaker 14: Let's say, Lombredo will check mom's, boyfriend's mom's place.
- 8:05Speaker 6: Do we have a number for her boyfriend?
- 8:09Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 8:09Speaker 7: She probably wanted an I-list too, more for me.
- 8:12Speaker 6: Yeah, let's check with the I-list too.
- 8:13Speaker 5: Maybe he's got something. Okay.
- 8:17Speaker 3: If she was going somewhere, she would definitely pack her makeup.
- 8:22Speaker 5: That's the area. This looks like what would be her purse.
- 8:27Speaker 5: A bag that she'd do her hair stuff with. That's here. Like,
- 8:33Speaker 5: I'm just like, what the fuck?
- 8:38Speaker 1: There was little sign of Anaya inside. A cursory search
- 8:41Speaker 1: revealed no evidence to suggest that she might be in danger.
- 8:45Speaker 1: But there were oddities. The bathtub in the bathroom used
- 8:49Speaker 1: by Anaya was full of water, as if she had
- 8:51Speaker 1: drawn a bath but never taken it. As Cora noted,
- 9:08Speaker 1: someone aside from herself had been in the home. Someone
- 9:11Speaker 1: had turned on the air conditioning unit and started a
- 9:14Speaker 1: load of laundry. In the washer were men's clothes and
- 9:17Speaker 1: two teal bathroom rugs. There were no mats in the
- 9:20Speaker 1: bathroom that Anaya used, the one with the full tub
- 9:23Speaker 1: of water.
- 9:27Speaker 15: Yeah, somebody definitely came in today, for sure.
- 9:30Speaker 7: Because when I.
- 9:31Speaker 5: Left today, it wasn't on.
- 9:32Speaker 6: Does her boyfriend ever come over here and do any.
- 9:34Speaker 5: Laundry or anything?
- 9:35Speaker 4: Yeah, they always do laundry together.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Okay.
- 9:38Speaker 5: So, it's not like I have to go in there.
- 9:40Speaker 5: Does he have a key? Nah. I don't think so.
- 9:42Speaker 5: That's what I'm saying.
- 9:43Speaker 6: Like, somebody was here because I don't think he has
- 9:45Speaker 6: a key. Usually, if he's coming, like, we'll leave.
- 9:47Speaker 7: The, I'll leave the door unlocked.
- 9:49Speaker 5: Like, if I know he's here or, like, she'll leave
- 9:51Speaker 5: the door unlocked. I don't think she's going to hurt him.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Many of Anaya's personal belongings that she would have with
- 9:57Speaker 1: her to travel were located in her bedroom. There was
- 10:00Speaker 1: also the unexplained situation with the two Malibus she had
- 10:03Speaker 1: been driving. Neither appeared to be roadworthy. If Anaya had
- 10:07Speaker 1: voluntarily left home, how was she traveling?
- 10:10Speaker 4: I think this is a little fishy.
- 10:15Speaker 8: This is the only person we haven't talked to.
- 10:18Speaker 4: Yeah, the wife is.
- 10:19Speaker 5: She's going to end up calling in the morning.
- 10:22Speaker 7: I hope so.
- 10:22Speaker 4: Where the.
- 10:24Speaker 8: Hell has she been at, though? Both of her cars
- 10:27Speaker 8: are here. Boyfriend has no car. Her best friend, her parents,
- 10:32Speaker 8: her god sister, her pastor, she's at work.
- 10:39Speaker 16: And from what other people have said, has the boyfriend
- 10:41Speaker 16: been around her the last couple days?
- 10:44Speaker 4: Well, he claims he hasn't seen her since Sunday either.
- 10:46Speaker 5: What about talking to her?
- 10:50Speaker 4: Yeah, I need to get that from him.
- 10:54Speaker 5: Yeah, so she's been missing since Sunday?
- 10:57Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the last time I.
- 11:00Speaker 6: Saw her.
- 11:01Speaker 11: Yeah, I don't know, man.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Officers left the apartment with different impressions of the severity
- 11:07Speaker 1: of the situation. They had failed to find any obvious
- 11:10Speaker 1: signs of foul play, but there was a lot that
- 11:12Speaker 1: was not right about the situation.
- 11:17Speaker 7: Do you think this is an actual.
- 11:20Speaker 14: An actual?
- 11:20Speaker 5: Like, an actual missing person?
- 11:23Speaker 14: Well, nobody knows where she's at right now, so she's missing.
- 11:26Speaker 15: Like, okay, well, I mean, like.
- 11:27Speaker 14: Do I think that she's in danger?
- 11:28Speaker 11: No.
- 11:28Speaker 12: Absolutely not.
- 11:29Speaker 11: Okay.
- 11:29Speaker 14: We've got nothing to lead us to believe that she's
- 11:32Speaker 14: in danger other than the fact that her boyfriend was
- 11:35Speaker 14: an asshole at one point.
- 11:37Speaker 6: Is that just a dispute that you were talking about,
- 11:39Speaker 6: or like a DB?
- 11:41Speaker 5: Uh... DB, but they didn't find it.
- 11:45Speaker 6: Who's... There's still somebody coming and going.
- 11:50Speaker 9: From the apartment.
- 11:51Speaker 5: That's the weird part.
- 11:52Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 11:54Speaker 17: But, like, roommate hasn't seen her in almost a week
- 11:58Speaker 17: and doesn't think anything of it.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Donovan Lewis had been unreachable. What they knew from Donovan
- 12:05Speaker 1: had been relayed to them via Anaya's friends who had
- 12:08Speaker 1: spoken with him. Both Dominic and LaQuenta said that Donovan
- 12:11Speaker 1: had also been trying to reach Anaya unsuccessfully since Sunday.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Officer Labretto tracked down an address for his mother's home,
- 12:19Speaker 1: which was subsequently visited. No one came to the door.
- 12:23Speaker 1: After failing to locate Donovan at his mother's home, Anaya's
- 12:26Speaker 1: good friend and god sister, Laquenda, contacted Officer Lockett once again.
- 12:32Speaker 1: This time, she informed him that she knew Donovan was
- 12:35Speaker 1: finishing his janitorial shift at Stryker, the medical equipment company,
- 12:39Speaker 1: at 3.30 a.m. He would be returning to Anaya's apartment.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Officers Adai and Lockett returned to the Hunter Ridge Apartments
- 12:47Speaker 1: once more that night to seek him out. Cora and
- 12:50Speaker 1: Dominic had left. There was no answer at the door.
- 12:53Speaker 18: I guess we'll wait outside for a little bit, see
- 13:00Speaker 18: if he shows up. I just feel like he'd be
- 13:06Speaker 18: a little bit more concerned if your girlfriend's going to
- 13:08Speaker 18: send out anything.
- 13:10Speaker 4: Just the one person who hasn't talked to us at
- 13:11Speaker 4: all yet. So this is the other thing I thought
- 13:17Speaker 4: was weird, but I think it's just complete fraud. That
- 13:19Speaker 4: down here, the white.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Car, is actually hers.
- 13:21Speaker 7: But they're both on flats.
- 13:24Speaker 4: So those cars have not moved recently.
- 13:27Speaker 12: What the fuck?
- 13:28Speaker 4: I know, this is a weird one, I'm telling you.
- 13:31Speaker 5: That person that you're talking to, what is that?
- 13:34Speaker 4: That's her god sister, like her other best female friend.
- 13:37Speaker 7: The guy she hates?
- 13:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:40Speaker 11: Oh, sick.
- 13:42Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 13:42Speaker 4: I tried to speak to mom. I got to call
- 13:45Speaker 4: mom back.
- 13:45Speaker 5: Apparently she just called me back.
- 13:49Speaker 4: Her other male best friend who I think he used
- 13:51Speaker 4: to know.
- 13:54Speaker 6: On the other side of the fence.
- 13:56Speaker 4: He hasn't seen her or heard from her.
- 13:58Speaker 8: Her roommate hasn't seen her or heard from her since
- 14:00Speaker 8: Friday because she was out of town all weekend.
- 14:03Speaker 15: What about.
- 14:04Speaker 6: You got any friends for this suspect?
- 14:07Speaker 5: The boy?
- 14:07Speaker 4: We haven't got that far yet to get into his friends.
- 14:11Speaker 16: The officers were standing in front of their cruiser.
- 14:18Speaker 7: And discussing their concerns over the case.
- 14:22Speaker 8: When things took an unexpected turn.
- 14:41Speaker 1: A man wearing a black t-shirt, khaki shorts, and a
- 14:44Speaker 1: backpack approached them from the front left side of the
- 14:47Speaker 1: cruiser in the dark.
- 14:51Speaker 4: What's, uh, what's going on, sir? Take a year and
- 14:55Speaker 4: we'll talk about it on the way. Just tell me now.
- 14:58Speaker 4: I'll kill my girlfriend.
- 15:00Speaker 11: 6-1-0-6-2.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Will you come to the apartment, please?
- 15:03Speaker 7: Where is she? Her old boyfriend.
- 15:10Speaker 5: Uh.
- 15:11Speaker 7: He's reporting a 10-35. Where is she?
- 15:23Speaker 14: Creek.
- 15:25Speaker 10: Where at?
- 15:27Speaker 3: Right here.
- 15:28Speaker 11: Dispassed.
- 15:30Speaker 4: You got any weapons on you, John? I don't have anything, sir.
- 15:38Speaker 5: You can get Pat down in a moment.
- 15:42Speaker 12: Alright, I've got to read some stuff to you real quick, okay?
- 15:44Speaker 12: You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say
- 15:47Speaker 12: can and will be used against you in the court
- 15:48Speaker 12: of law. You have the right to talk to the
- 15:50Speaker 12: lawyer and have him or her present with you before
- 15:52Speaker 12: or during any questioning.
- 15:55Speaker 4: Tell me from the beginning what's going on. Hey, give
- 16:04Speaker 4: me one second, okay?
- 16:06Speaker 7: Six, let me see.
- 16:11Speaker 18: When I got back to town.
- 16:15Speaker 7: About a week ago, or three weeks ago, on the 16th,
- 16:20Speaker 7: I found out I.
- 16:21Speaker 5: Went to her home, and.
- 16:22Speaker 17: I found out they were messing around.
- 16:24Speaker 5: I tried to get over it.
- 16:42Speaker 4: I told her, it's okay.
- 16:44Speaker 5: I understand what you did.
- 16:46Speaker 6: I respect that you took care of yourself.
- 16:50Speaker 5: And we moved forward.
- 16:52Speaker 14: And we had a great couple weeks.
- 16:54Speaker 5: And at least Sunday, we had an argument. Because I
- 17:00Speaker 5: just moved back.
- 17:02Speaker 14: So I didn't have a job.
- 17:03Speaker 5: I didn't have any money. The week before... Saturday, or maybe.
- 17:11Speaker 6: Two weeks, I don't know, she told.
- 17:14Speaker 5: Me, you know, you're not doing enough.
- 17:16Speaker 14: I told her I could call my dad, ask for
- 17:19Speaker 14: some help, whatever, and she just raised some cash and
- 17:23Speaker 14: told me all this shit, told me everything about me.
- 17:28Speaker 7: All right.
- 17:29Speaker 5: Saturday, Sunday came.
- 17:30Speaker 4: Let's have a seat in the back.
- 17:31Speaker 7: My car will put that.
- 17:33Speaker 11: Yep.
- 17:33Speaker 9: Yep.
- 17:37Speaker 4: Guys, sit tight, okay? Donovan Lewis was happy to keep talking,
- 17:45Speaker 4: though officers preferred to.
- 17:47Speaker 7: Have detectives assigned before they took the interview any further.
- 17:50Speaker 4: As they placed Donovan formally under arrest and in the
- 17:52Speaker 4: back of a cruiser, he continued to provide scattered details.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Officer Libretto arrived back on scene to find that the
- 18:15Speaker 1: case that seemed to be only a possible missing person's
- 18:18Speaker 1: minutes earlier was now a homicide.
- 18:22Speaker 16: So that took.
- 18:39Speaker 4: A twist.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Officer Lockett was now the point of contact. He drove
- 18:51Speaker 1: Donovan to the station and continued to make small talk
- 18:54Speaker 1: with him while they awaited the arrival of detectives.
- 18:59Speaker 7: So stay where I'm at.
- 19:34Speaker 1: When Lockett got Donovan talking, the 25-year-old made some surprising accusations.
- 19:40Speaker 1: He explained that after going through his girlfriend's phone, he
- 19:43Speaker 1: discovered inappropriate text messages from her pastor. He believed that
- 19:49Speaker 1: the two were friends. physically involved. He further claimed that
- 19:53Speaker 1: since Anaya had been struggling financially, that she had been
- 19:56Speaker 1: blackmailing the pastor while Donovan was out of state. The
- 20:00Speaker 1: pastor had been paying her rent, her phone bill, and
- 20:03Speaker 1: given her the second Malibu to drive.
- 20:08Speaker 4: What's been going on?
- 20:13Speaker 5: Just had a rough week.
- 20:15Speaker 6: Last week, the car had to pass through the laundry.
- 20:21Speaker 5: Back tire went flat. Oh, is that why? It was
- 20:27Speaker 5: a slow week, so we had to keep refilling it
- 20:29Speaker 5: and refilling it. And on Sunday, we found the lighthouse.
- 20:35Speaker 6: She wanted to go to church. She went outside. The
- 20:41Speaker 6: front tire was flat.
- 20:42Speaker 10: Hmm.
- 20:43Speaker 4: Think somebody's doing anything? The car's just old and the
- 20:45Speaker 4: tires are bad or what?
- 20:46Speaker 5: I don't know. I don't know, Doug. Whatever she's got
- 20:55Speaker 5: going on with the car. Oh. And when she got
- 21:00Speaker 5: the car, she told me, and I can't, I can't
- 21:05Speaker 5: even pick her up. She told me, you know, She
- 21:11Speaker 5: got a new car. We got a new car.
- 21:13Speaker 7: From the church.
- 21:16Speaker 5: Recently, she told me. I kind.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Of told her I want to have her sit down
- 21:23Speaker 2: with him because.
- 21:26Speaker 5: He ended up picking her.
- 21:27Speaker 3: Up and.
- 21:29Speaker 5: Apparently threatened her.
- 21:32Speaker 4: The pastor threatened her?
- 21:34Speaker 5: Over the car?
- 21:35Speaker 9: Why?
- 21:37Speaker 6: Because she was using him. She told him she would
- 21:39Speaker 6: tell him. An argument had broken.
- 21:45Speaker 4: Out at Aniyah's apartment that Sunday.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Prompted in part by the ongoing tensions caused by her
- 22:11Speaker 1: relationship with her pastor, Strick Strickland, of the Second Baptist Church.
- 22:16Speaker 1: The pastor, who was married, was also the local president
- 22:19Speaker 1: of the NAACP. Anaya began attending his church at the
- 22:23Speaker 1: beginning of that year.
- 22:24Speaker 5: And I went to her farm. She'd tussle with me
- 22:31Speaker 5: about her farm. She died on her farm. Kind of
- 22:36Speaker 5: got in my good.
- 22:38Speaker 6: A few positions with all her fingers in her hands
- 22:40Speaker 6: and saw that it was a passenger, saw what he said,
- 22:42Speaker 6: and she kind of just gave up. Gave up the phone.
- 22:52Speaker 5: And the whole time she was laughing.
- 22:56Speaker 19: Grinning.
- 22:57Speaker 5: And she gave up the phone, she was grinning and laughing.
- 23:02Speaker 5: Because she knew, okay, if I do make.
- 23:05Speaker 1: That accusation, Upon the arrival of detectives, Donovan Lewis offered
- 23:22Speaker 1: a full written confession to the murder. Donovan wrote that
- 23:28Speaker 1: Anais Malibu had continued to get flat tires. The pastor
- 23:32Speaker 1: had paid to have the tires mended at least once.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Strickland then offered her the second Malibu, which he claimed
- 23:38Speaker 1: to own, for her use. It, too, began getting flats
- 23:43Speaker 1: and became unserviceable. The pastor began coming by the apartment
- 23:47Speaker 1: more and more frequently to collect Anaya. Earlier in the year,
- 23:52Speaker 1: she had taken an all-expense-paid trip with him and other
- 23:55Speaker 1: choir members to the pastor's native Mississippi. According to Donovan,
- 24:00Speaker 1: Anaya had admitted to him that she was using the
- 24:02Speaker 1: relationship as leverage. After threatening to expose their relationship to
- 24:06Speaker 1: his wife and others, Donovan claimed that Strickland had threatened Anaya.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Around the same time he dropped off the Malibu for
- 24:14Speaker 1: her to drive, she had allegedly said that the pastor
- 24:17Speaker 1: made it clear that he was willing to hurt her.
- 24:24Speaker 1: That Sunday, Donovan had been drinking. Anaya was running a bath.
- 24:29Speaker 1: He claimed to be drunk and exhausted from lack of sleep.
- 24:32Speaker 1: having stayed up all night going through her phone. One
- 24:36Speaker 1: text from Pastor Strickland in particular had him incensed. The
- 24:42Speaker 1: two began to argue. Anaya told him that she wanted
- 24:45Speaker 1: him to leave, for good. She got out one of
- 24:48Speaker 1: his suitcases and began packing his belongings into it. That
- 24:51Speaker 1: is when Donovan said he struck her, rendering her unconscious.
- 24:55Speaker 1: He said that he then went into the kitchen, got
- 24:58Speaker 1: a large knife, and returned to the bedroom, and slit
- 25:01Speaker 1: her throat, and stabbed her. He admitted that he then
- 25:05Speaker 1: put a garbage bag over her head and put her
- 25:08Speaker 1: into the suitcase. He placed the suitcase in a dumpster
- 25:15Speaker 1: outside of the visitor parking. The next day, in the dark,
- 25:18Speaker 1: he retrieved it. Driving his mother's van, he drove out
- 25:22Speaker 1: to Comstock Creek on East Main past Sprinkle Road. He
- 25:26Speaker 1: left Anaya in a deep stream off of the creek,
- 25:29Speaker 1: weighing the suitcase down with mud so it would sink
- 25:32Speaker 1: toward the bottom of the water.
- 25:36Speaker 13: She walks into a room, and you know it's night. Like,
- 25:40Speaker 13: all eyes are on night. Like, it's just always been
- 25:43Speaker 13: like that. She was supposed to start summer school yesterday,
- 25:46Speaker 13: and it's just, like, heartbreaking to hear, like, how it happened.
- 25:51Speaker 4: She didn't deserve it.
- 25:52Speaker 13: I always said if something happened to me, I don't
- 25:55Speaker 13: want everybody to be sad. I don't want nobody to
- 25:57Speaker 13: wear black. I want everybody to be in bright colors.
- 26:01Speaker 13: Trust me, I've been crying, but that ain't what she want.
- 26:04Speaker 13: She want us to be as happy as possible and
- 26:08Speaker 13: give her the best home going we can.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Investigators questioned some details provided by Donovan. In particular, they
- 26:18Speaker 1: expressed some doubt over how the murder transpired based on
- 26:21Speaker 1: the lack of blood in the apartment. Responding officers failed
- 26:25Speaker 1: to identify any signs that a stabbing had taken place.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Upon closer inspection, however, small but identifiable stains were discovered
- 26:34Speaker 1: in the hallway, on the edge of Anaya's bed, and
- 26:37Speaker 1: on the bedroom carpet. Cleaning products already inside the unit
- 26:41Speaker 1: have been used to clean other surfaces. Donovan had disposed
- 26:45Speaker 1: of a mattress cover in the apartment dumpster, which had
- 26:48Speaker 1: already been collected by the time law enforcement reached it.
- 26:51Speaker 1: He had placed the bath mats in the washing machine
- 26:54Speaker 1: and disposed of his own clothing at his mother's home.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Anaya's personal belongings, her purse, ID, and bank cards were
- 27:01Speaker 1: thrown away in a bin near to his workplace. Only
- 27:04Speaker 1: portions of this evidence was ever recovered. The physical evidence
- 27:08Speaker 1: was not the only aspect of his story that the
- 27:11Speaker 1: detectives sought to verify. Pastor Strickland told the Kalamazoo police
- 27:18Speaker 1: that Anaya Mack was simply a member of his congregation
- 27:21Speaker 1: and the church choir. He was not having a relationship
- 27:24Speaker 1: with her. Indeed, when pressed by detectives, Donovan conceded that
- 27:28Speaker 1: Anaya had never actually admitted to an affair with the pastor,
- 27:32Speaker 1: only that she was allegedly manipulating him for financial gain.
- 27:36Speaker 1: Strickland stated that Anaya had recently traveled with him to
- 27:39Speaker 1: Mississippi for a choir trip. While she was there, she
- 27:43Speaker 1: met a young man with whom she was interested and
- 27:46Speaker 1: they started a relationship. He stated that since she had
- 27:49Speaker 1: a boyfriend in Kalamazoo, she was hiding the relationship with
- 27:52Speaker 1: the young man in Mississippi. According to Pastor Strickland, Anaya
- 27:57Speaker 1: was doing this by hiding this young man's contact info
- 28:00Speaker 1: in her phone under his name. He stated she did
- 28:04Speaker 1: this so if her boyfriend saw the phone, he would
- 28:07Speaker 1: think it was the pastor contacting her and would not
- 28:10Speaker 1: be suspicious. Roughly a month after the pastor gave his
- 28:13Speaker 1: statement to police, he contacted them once again. He wanted
- 28:17Speaker 1: the 2008 white Malibu returned to him. The issue was
- 28:21Speaker 1: that he seemed unable to prove that it was properly purchased.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Strickland claimed that the car was his wife's, Jasmineique's, vehicle.
- 28:29Speaker 1: He had purchased it from a man, presumably named Gustavo,
- 28:32Speaker 1: but had no title or bill of sale.
- 28:35Speaker 4: Hello, I'm looking to speak with Pastor Strickland.
- 28:39Speaker 10: This is E.
- 28:40Speaker 3: Hi there.
- 28:41Speaker 4: This is Sergeant Charles Trepp at Kalamazoo Public Safety. How
- 28:43Speaker 4: are you doing today?
- 28:44Speaker 7: I'm doing great.
- 28:45Speaker 5: How about you, sir?
- 28:46Speaker 4: Not too bad, sir.
- 28:46Speaker 17: I got a voicemail message from Chief Boyce and saying
- 28:49Speaker 17: that you had some questions about an automobile. Yes, sir.
- 28:53Speaker 15: One of the automobiles that was taken related to the
- 28:57Speaker 15: Anaya Mack murder.
- 29:00Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
- 29:00Speaker 15: One of those vehicles belonged to my wife.
- 29:03Speaker 4: Okay.
- 29:05Speaker 15: And we are trying to recover it. We had actually
- 29:10Speaker 15: misplaced prior to going out of town. And Anaya had
- 29:17Speaker 15: reached out to us while we were out of town
- 29:18Speaker 15: and told us that she had found the title. And
- 29:21Speaker 15: that the title was supposed to be in the console,
- 29:24Speaker 15: which I had looked in the console, I know, 20 times.
- 29:28Speaker 12: But anyway, she.
- 29:28Speaker 15: Said that the title was folded up really small. So
- 29:33Speaker 15: I'm thinking that this is gonna be the car that
- 29:35Speaker 15: you all find. It's the one that doesn't have any
- 29:38Speaker 15: tinted windows or any rims on it.
- 29:40Speaker 3: It's just factory.
- 29:42Speaker 15: In the console, you should find I'm hoping that she
- 29:45Speaker 15: didn't take it out or put it anywhere. You should
- 29:49Speaker 15: find the title in the console. Ownership of the car
- 29:53Speaker 15: was never proven, and it was not returned.
- 29:55Speaker 3: To the pastor.
- 29:56Speaker 15: This would be the least of the pastor's issues, however,
- 29:59Speaker 15: when later that year, he was accused by three teenagers
- 30:03Speaker 15: in his church of sexual assault.
- 30:18Speaker 1: He and his wife stood accused of using their positions
- 30:21Speaker 1: in the church and at a local school to coerce
- 30:24Speaker 1: teens into their bed. One victim reported feeling unable to
- 30:28Speaker 1: refuse the pastor's advances because he really needed the use
- 30:32Speaker 1: of the car that the pastor was lending him.
- 30:36Speaker 10: Pastor Strickland is here.
- 30:37Speaker 5: He hasn't gone anywhere. He's been here throughout this.
- 30:40Speaker 10: He remains pastor at Second Baptist.
- 30:44Speaker 5: Three different things. Magne teens for.
- 30:46Speaker 19: Sex, CSC, and pandering.
- 30:49Speaker 5: Can Mr. Strickland or can someone respond to this?
- 30:53Speaker 10: No, no, and no.
- 30:55Speaker 5: Not guilty, not guilty, not guilty. Didn't do it, didn't
- 30:58Speaker 5: do it, didn't do it.
- 31:00Speaker 18: Given your role at the church, is it typical for
- 31:02Speaker 18: you to give teens, boys in the community money?
- 31:07Speaker 10: Well, there are a lot of programs through the church
- 31:18Speaker 10: that help kids out.
- 31:22Speaker 2: But does Pastor Strickland personally give kids money himself?
- 31:29Speaker 10: I don't know of any situation where that has happened.
- 31:33Speaker 1: The Michigan State Police investigation into Strickland and his wife
- 31:37Speaker 1: found that the alleged assaults took place between January and
- 31:40Speaker 1: May 2018. Text messages and screenshots of photographs taken from
- 31:45Speaker 1: the victim's cell phones supported their claims against Strickland. In
- 31:50Speaker 1: February 2023, a plea agreement was reached. He admitted to
- 31:55Speaker 1: using a vehicle to solicit prostitution. The pastor was sentenced
- 31:59Speaker 1: to one year in prison.
- 32:01Speaker 17: During that time within the county, did you knowingly offer
- 32:04Speaker 17: to sell transportation services to TH and or TJ that
- 32:09Speaker 17: facilitated travel for the purpose of engaging in what would
- 32:12Speaker 17: be a violation of the laws governing prostitution?
- 32:17Speaker 3: Yes.
- 32:19Speaker 1: In a lengthy sentencing statement, the pastor continued to deny
- 32:23Speaker 1: his guilt, explaining that accepting the plea was simply in
- 32:27Speaker 1: the best interest of his family.
- 32:28Speaker 20: I'm not here today to be pious and to pretend
- 32:33Speaker 20: as though I am innocent and without fault.
- 32:35Speaker 5: However, I am not guilty of what I was accused of.
- 32:39Speaker 20: I am glad that the 10 most.
- 32:43Speaker 5: Heinous charges were dismissed.
- 32:46Speaker 20: And eventually, the prosecutors, with their backs against the wall,
- 32:51Speaker 20: made a deal that I believe was too good of
- 32:57Speaker 20: a deal to put my family through the risk of going.
- 33:00Speaker 5: Through a trial.
- 33:02Speaker 20: I know that they'll use their imps in the media
- 33:06Speaker 20: to try to pretend that they've won in some way,
- 33:08Speaker 20: or that this is some win for the prosecutor's office.
- 33:11Speaker 20: This is not a win for the prosecutor's office, and
- 33:13Speaker 20: it's certainly not a win for the cause of justice.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Donovan Lewis agreed to lead Kalamazoo police to the location
- 33:21Speaker 1: at Comstock Creek where he had left Anaya.
- 33:26Speaker 7: It's a little bit sloped right there.
- 33:40Speaker 4: Now did you, Donovan, did you have her on this.
- 33:42Speaker 7: Side of the guard real quick? In a suitcase or.
- 33:45Speaker 19: Did you bring her all the way down?
- 33:45Speaker 5: All the way down.
- 33:47Speaker 7: All the way down here?
- 33:47Speaker 4: Okay, so you wheel her in the suitcase all.
- 33:49Speaker 19: The way down here?
- 33:51Speaker 3: Okay.
- 33:52Speaker 7: Can you park back up by where the SUV is?
- 33:57Speaker 8: Where the white truck is?
- 34:01Speaker 7: And how do you.
- 34:02Speaker 11: Get her in the water?
- 34:03Speaker 14: You just threw her in the suitcase into the water.
- 34:07Speaker 4: Okay, and this is the right spot?
- 34:08Speaker 11: Okay, where do you want these guys to go?
- 34:11Speaker 5: Straight.
- 34:11Speaker 17: Straight down?
- 34:12Speaker 4: Switch sides so the sun's not making a problem.
- 34:23Speaker 1: An accomplished swimmer, Donovan had taken Anaya in the suitcase
- 34:27Speaker 1: further down the creek and into the deeper, muddy water.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Searchers were unable to wade into the stream and instead
- 34:34Speaker 1: took a rescue boat.
- 34:36Speaker 4: We're on camera, guys.
- 34:37Speaker 7: Yep, we're on camera.
- 34:39Speaker 5: Where are we headed? Right in there.
- 34:46Speaker 7: Well, I don't think we're going to get in there. Okay,
- 34:50Speaker 7: we're on camera.
- 34:50Speaker 2: We're on camera.
- 34:51Speaker 7: All right. Are we.
- 34:54Speaker 4: Going to be able to get this thing back there, Terry?
- 34:56Speaker 5: No, no.
- 34:57Speaker 7: We're looking to try to somehow get the rope you
- 34:59Speaker 7: got in there. You're going to try to get it out.
- 35:01Speaker 6: Here's the rope bag.
- 35:02Speaker 11: Tie that off on the boat.
- 35:06Speaker 7: Oh, that's a problem. At 0920 hours, we have connected
- 35:09Speaker 7: to the.
- 35:11Speaker 5: Suitcase. Evidence.
- 35:12Speaker 10: All right.
- 35:14Speaker 6: Would you want to get it closer?
- 35:15Speaker 4: Did you guys open confirm already?
- 35:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:21Speaker 5: Was that recorded?
- 35:23Speaker 7: Yeah, that's recorded.
- 35:25Speaker 6: It just buzzed, but it was just a four minute
- 35:27Speaker 6: buzz or whatever.
- 35:28Speaker 1: Okay.
- 35:30Speaker 3: Now when we get out, do we want to think
- 35:34Speaker 3: of it off in the back?
- 35:35Speaker 6: So we're not backing up the screen?
- 35:37Speaker 7: Did it stick?
- 35:44Speaker 2: I think all the way out and then probably hand
- 35:47Speaker 2: the rope back through some of them back.
- 35:50Speaker 6: All right, we're almost.
- 35:53Speaker 5: Back up in the stream. See that tag.
- 35:55Speaker 6: Is loose sitting on top of there.
- 35:57Speaker 7: It's just laying there.
- 35:59Speaker 10: Tag?
- 35:59Speaker 7: What tag?
- 35:59Speaker 6: The luggage tag.
- 36:01Speaker 7: Oh, okay. Okay.
- 36:03Speaker 14: John, you want to fish?
- 36:04Speaker 5: Yeah. Can you get that, Mark? You got it? And
- 36:12Speaker 5: then I'll.
- 36:14Speaker 1: After recovering the suitcase from the water, investigators continued to
- 36:18Speaker 1: search the small channel for the murder weapon, the black-handled
- 36:22Speaker 1: butcher knife that Donovan had used. He stated that he
- 36:25Speaker 1: had stuck it into the side of the creek very
- 36:27Speaker 1: close to the suitcase. After removing several feet of vegetation, however,
- 36:32Speaker 1: searchers were still unable to locate it. The recovery had
- 36:36Speaker 1: been successful nonetheless. Anaya's family was able to lay her
- 36:41Speaker 1: to rest.
- 36:43Speaker 19: To other people, being about other people, was her legacy
- 36:47Speaker 19: and is her legacy.
- 36:47Speaker 4: And that's what we want people to focus on.
- 36:49Speaker 7: You got a lot of love for everybody.
- 36:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:53Speaker 13: Oh, God.
- 36:55Speaker 19: My Naya was a person about other people. Naya was about,
- 36:59Speaker 19: you know, mental health awareness.
- 37:03Speaker 5: She was about autism research. She loved kids.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Three days before Donovan Lewis was meant to stand trial
- 37:11Speaker 1: for first-degree murder, He was in the recreation yard at
- 37:14Speaker 1: the Kalamazoo County Jail playing soccer with a handful of
- 37:18Speaker 1: fellow inmates. After about 30 minutes of recreation time, he
- 37:22Speaker 1: abruptly stopped kicking a soccer ball and bolted towards the fence.
- 37:26Speaker 1: Donovan scaled two 15-foot walls, climbed over security fences, one
- 37:31Speaker 1: topped with barbed wire and the other topped with razor wire.
- 37:34Speaker 1: He then scaled a third fence separating the jail from
- 37:37Speaker 1: the business loop. He was captured just over a half
- 37:41Speaker 1: an hour later.
- 37:45Speaker 11: It appears that he was able to just find a
- 37:47Speaker 11: spot and get over it without injuring himself. The first
- 37:51Speaker 11: level is a barbed wire fence. The second level is
- 37:54Speaker 11: razor wire. The person in custody was able to get over.
- 37:57Speaker 4: Both of those.
- 37:59Speaker 11: Then they went over the barbed wire fence that contains
- 38:03Speaker 11: the business loop of I-94. And the jail jumpsuit was
- 38:07Speaker 11: found approximately 100 yards south of that spot.
- 38:11Speaker 1: Donovan later claimed that he was not trying to avoid
- 38:14Speaker 1: punishment for the murder. He said that he feared for
- 38:16Speaker 1: his family, whom he claimed had been receiving death threats.
- 38:21Speaker 1: No evidence for this assertion was put forward. He pleaded
- 38:24Speaker 1: guilty to the escape. Anaya's family was keen to avoid
- 38:31Speaker 1: the trauma of a trial, and so in late 2018,
- 38:34Speaker 1: the state agreed to offer Donovan Lewis a plea deal
- 38:38Speaker 1: for second-degree murder.
- 38:40Speaker 5: I can imagine.
- 38:45Speaker 14: That I've caused.
- 38:46Speaker 5: I don't even know the beginning.
- 38:49Speaker 14: I just want to say sorry to the family.
- 38:50Speaker 6: That's all.
- 38:57Speaker 17: When I sentenced you, Mr.
- 38:58Speaker 9: Lewis, I balanced the principles of punishment, rehabilitation, protection of society,
- 39:02Speaker 9: as well as deterrence. Particularly, you being cooperative, taking full responsibility,
- 39:07Speaker 9: not minimizing your role in this and expressing a level
- 39:10Speaker 9: of remorse, a decent education. There are a lot of
- 39:15Speaker 9: good things here that you had developed over your life, Mr. Lewis,
- 39:19Speaker 9: and you threw all of that out the window back
- 39:21Speaker 9: on June 24th. Niamac didn't deserve any of these things.
- 39:25Speaker 9: She didn't deserve to be hit to begin with. She
- 39:28Speaker 9: didn't deserve to be... put unconscious. She didn't deserve to
- 39:32Speaker 9: be stabbed and murdered. And her body didn't deserve to
- 39:35Speaker 9: be treated less than garbage.
- 39:38Speaker 17: And all of that happened because of you, nobody else.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Donovan Lewis was sentenced to 25 to 40 years in prison.
- 39:48Speaker 1: He was given an additional 17 months to four years
- 39:51Speaker 1: for his escape from the county jail.
- 39:53Speaker 6: How do you feel now with the sentence?
- 39:57Speaker 13: I feel good because my sister is okay with the sentence,
- 40:00Speaker 13: and so I'm okay with it.
- 40:02Speaker 12: You spoke about forgiveness, not wanting to take pain for pain,
- 40:06Speaker 12: but hoping that he can live with what he's done.
- 40:08Speaker 5: Can you talk about that? He had to live with
- 40:12Speaker 5: it for the rest of his life. Whether he was
- 40:14Speaker 5: sincere with what he said in court or not, He
- 40:17Speaker 5: has to live with it. And I hope he can.
- 40:20Speaker 5: And I mean that. I haven't forgiven him.
- 40:22Speaker 7: My sister, I haven't.
- 40:25Speaker 5: And in time, I'm sure I will.
- 40:26Speaker 10: But not now.
- 40:28Speaker 7: I'm not ready.
- 40:29Speaker 5: And talk about Anaya.
