- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome into Northside Territory. Foul Territory Networks Cubs Podcast. I'm
- 0:09Speaker 1: Sahadev Sharma with my partner Patrick Mooney. We are your
- 0:13Speaker 1: Cubs beat writers over at the Athletic and Patrick. The
- 0:17Speaker 1: trade deadline has come and gone. The Cubs have made
- 0:21Speaker 1: multiple moves, they have improved their team. I think it's
- 0:25Speaker 1: hard to argue against that. What fans, many fans I
- 0:30Speaker 1: don't want to say, like judging by the reaction I got,
- 0:34Speaker 1: it's not all fans, but it's many fans, many pundits,
- 0:40Speaker 1: people all around the game feel like there was a
- 0:42Speaker 1: missed opportunity here that they didn't do what they needed
- 0:48Speaker 1: to to have this be a successful deadline. I think
- 0:53Speaker 1: after what we're recording this about five hours after the
- 0:56Speaker 1: deadline is hit, I think after thinking about it, seeing
- 1:01Speaker 1: everything that's happened, I can I can understand the frustration,
- 1:05Speaker 1: but I also understand where Jed Hoyr is coming from,
- 1:07Speaker 1: like what I think ultimately, the Cubs didn't get a
- 1:11Speaker 1: no doubt playoffs starter. I'm not sure if there was
- 1:14Speaker 1: one that could have been Pride for reasonable cost, but
- 1:20Speaker 1: it just feels disappointing when when this team is this
- 1:24Speaker 1: good with some obvious needs, and the biggest need wasn't addressed.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Yeah, and Jed Hoyer's point was understood that you know,
- 1:38Speaker 2: no other team made the trade for he wouldn't say
- 1:42Speaker 2: by name, but the marquee controllable starters, Mackenzie Gore, Joe Ryan.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:51Speaker 2: There's kind of split opinions on Sandiagatara and Edward Cabrera,
- 1:56Speaker 2: but they both, you know, fall under that ella as well.
- 2:01Speaker 2: And you know, I think I've like every move the
- 2:06Speaker 2: Cubs actually followed through on. I think you're not in
- 2:11Speaker 2: your head. I think you agree as well. Just to me,
- 2:15Speaker 2: I have a hard time looking at what the Cubs
- 2:18Speaker 2: gave up and thinking like their actions met the moment.
- 2:25Speaker 2: And what I'm talking about is trading just kind of
- 2:27Speaker 2: a bunch of teenagers slash mid round picks, almost all
- 2:33Speaker 2: of them in the lower levels, couple in the middle
- 2:36Speaker 2: levels of your farm system. I just thought they clung
- 2:42Speaker 2: a little too tightly to that. I get it. Acquiring
- 2:45Speaker 2: Mackenzie Gore would have been really difficult. Maybe the prices
- 2:49Speaker 2: were so unreasonable. I just I was just honestly surprised
- 2:55Speaker 2: that they didn't get that. Charlie Morton or someone like that,
- 3:00Speaker 2: Like we were all in that media workroom on the
- 3:02Speaker 2: second floor of the Early office tower as it crept
- 3:05Speaker 2: towards five o'clock local time, even afterwards, thinking something else
- 3:10Speaker 2: is going to trickle out, Zach Gallon, just someone like that.
- 3:13Speaker 2: I thought that was going to be there, and I'm
- 3:16Speaker 2: really surprised it didn't come through.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I absolutely agree. There was a feeling of surprise.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I think listening to jet Talk, I listened to multiple
- 3:28Speaker 1: others beyond him speaking to us in the media room there.
- 3:33Speaker 4: I heard him on the radio. I heard him on.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Marquee something a point he made he said, there, you know,
- 3:41Speaker 1: there were rentals available, and then there were like the
- 3:44Speaker 1: guys that like the Joe Ryan, the Edward Cabrera, the
- 3:48Speaker 1: Mackenzie Gore. That's two and a half, three and a
- 3:51Speaker 1: half years of control. There was no one and a
- 3:54Speaker 1: half year of control guy. Which maybe that's where they
- 3:59Speaker 1: fit past for value wise, if if you're if you're
- 4:04Speaker 1: trying gonna trade Joe Ryan, if you're gonna trade Mackenzie Gore,
- 4:07Speaker 1: that's probably starts with Cad.
- 4:10Speaker 4: Horton or Matt Shaw, maybe.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Both that if that's where they're not budging from giving
- 4:16Speaker 1: up with one of those guys.
- 4:18Speaker 4: I get it.
- 4:19Speaker 1: If you're not budging from giving up Owen Casey or
- 4:22Speaker 1: Jefferson Rojas or Kevin o'contrad that's where I'd have some issues.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I'm not sure if that was the case. They probably
- 4:31Speaker 1: weren't willing to give those guys up for a rental.
- 4:34Speaker 1: And that's where it's like this weird in between. There
- 4:37Speaker 1: wasn't that one and a half yer guy, and and
- 4:41Speaker 1: they don't have that double a guy, a plus guy
- 4:46Speaker 1: that's not in the top one hundred but not you
- 4:50Speaker 1: know not Also like this, uh, this guy that has
- 4:53Speaker 1: tremendous upside that could be in the top one hundred
- 4:57Speaker 1: next year. Like that's what you want you, I want
- 5:00Speaker 1: one of those guys to give up for a rental.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Maybe where you're you're like, yeah, well we'll take the risk.
- 5:05Speaker 1: This guy could be a top one hundred guy next year.
- 5:08Speaker 1: The guys that are like seventeen and could be a
- 5:11Speaker 1: top one hundred guy and five years everything clicks, they
- 5:14Speaker 1: don't want that for the rental, for the top tier rental.
- 5:16Speaker 1: So it was just a weird market. I think for
- 5:18Speaker 1: Jed Hoyer, I think he made some valid points. I
- 5:21Speaker 1: also just think I think you're right when you and
- 5:24Speaker 1: I think fans that are are frustrated or right in
- 5:27Speaker 1: the sense like I don't know what could have been
- 5:31Speaker 1: done right. We don't have We're not sitting in those
- 5:33Speaker 1: rooms and hearing every deal. But maybe when you see
- 5:38Speaker 1: the Astros behaving the way they do, when you see
- 5:41Speaker 1: the Padres behaving like they do, was Dylan Ce's available
- 5:45Speaker 1: and what kind of what kind of pride? That's probably
- 5:48Speaker 1: where you do willingly give up the top one hundred
- 5:51Speaker 1: prospect for a rental, And you know.
- 5:54Speaker 4: I don't think that's how they look at it.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I think sometimes there's a guy like that where you say,
- 5:59Speaker 1: you know what, screw it, we're giving them up for
- 6:01Speaker 1: the rental because this guy's just that good and changes
- 6:04Speaker 1: the dynamic of our team. I think for me, when
- 6:09Speaker 1: I ultimately what I look at is, you have all
- 6:13Speaker 1: these prospects, what are you going to do with them?
- 6:17Speaker 1: You can't play them all. I think some of them
- 6:20Speaker 1: can be useful bench pieces this year. Maybe some of
- 6:23Speaker 1: them earn starting time over the course of the next
- 6:26Speaker 1: two months, But then what like maybe one guy replaces
- 6:31Speaker 1: Kyle Tucker, But what about the others. We're playing time
- 6:35Speaker 1: for Moyses Biasis, for Owen Casey, for Kevin ol Contra,
- 6:39Speaker 1: for Jonathan Long where like, I don't know, I don't
- 6:44Speaker 1: know where you play all these guys when you have
- 6:47Speaker 1: these these prospects at Triple A. Yeah, it's great, but
- 6:51Speaker 1: eventually they need to be traded, and they need to
- 6:53Speaker 1: be traded at the right time, and you need to
- 6:55Speaker 1: trade the right ones, and that's on them to figure
- 6:57Speaker 1: that out. That's I think we'll discuss that in the
- 6:59Speaker 1: win more than now. But it's just something that I
- 7:02Speaker 1: was thinking about while trying to talk all this out
- 7:05Speaker 1: and to think all this through over the past five hours.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Look, you mentioned Kyle Tucker, he's what like fifty something
- 7:14Speaker 2: games away from reaching free agency. I looked, I forget
- 7:18Speaker 2: the exact number, something in that range, what two months
- 7:21Speaker 2: maybe two months in a playoff run. Pete crow Armstrong, like,
- 7:26Speaker 2: I think he's gonna have a real nice long career
- 7:28Speaker 2: in the big leagues. So he's gonna play at an
- 7:31Speaker 2: MVP level every year the rest of his life. I
- 7:34Speaker 2: mean probably not. You know, you have a group that
- 7:41Speaker 2: has overcome adversity, uh, in the firm form of you know,
- 7:45Speaker 2: Justin Steele's injury. Uh, you've gotten, you know, great performance
- 7:51Speaker 2: out of Matthew Boyd. The Brewers are pushing you, uh
- 7:56Speaker 2: and probably will until the last game of the season
- 8:00Speaker 2: at a time when the Saint Louis Cardinals are just receding,
- 8:03Speaker 2: you know, your historic rival. I just saw the circumstances
- 8:10Speaker 2: and the club's play uh merited more. And you know,
- 8:16Speaker 2: I'm not even doing the whole like front office versus clubhouse,
- 8:20Speaker 2: you know battle, because Craig Counsel is an extension of
- 8:23Speaker 2: that front office. I mean, Jet Hoyer has been in
- 8:28Speaker 2: the organization the entire time all of these guys have
- 8:30Speaker 2: come into the organization, whether he was the GM or
- 8:35Speaker 2: the president of Baseball Operations. So it's not like he's
- 8:38Speaker 2: some new guy who doesn't believe in this group. This
- 8:41Speaker 2: is his handpicked team, and I don't I would love
- 8:48Speaker 2: to like hear, you know, some of these discussions of
- 8:51Speaker 2: like where they draw the line on prospect value, because
- 8:56Speaker 2: it just felt like they held him held him too
- 9:00Speaker 2: tightly this summer that it could have been just one
- 9:04Speaker 2: more move out there. And I think it's a different
- 9:06Speaker 2: tone as we're talking on social media, maybe even within
- 9:11Speaker 2: their own organization.
- 9:12Speaker 1: You know what, when the more I think about this,
- 9:16Speaker 1: here's something that I think is most unacceptable if you're
- 9:21Speaker 1: not going to make the moves right now. That like,
- 9:24Speaker 1: when you clearly need to bolster this roster and there
- 9:27Speaker 1: are holes on the roster. You had to do it
- 9:30Speaker 1: in the winter, and they and they, and that's where
- 9:34Speaker 1: the money wasn't spent or that's where the prospect may
- 9:37Speaker 1: have been clung too tightly. And and it was a
- 9:41Speaker 1: moment where I was willing to give them the benefit
- 9:44Speaker 1: of the doubt of Okay, evaluate the roster, see where
- 9:47Speaker 1: everything is, and then.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Make the moves.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Come July, and they made a bunch of moves. I
- 9:53Speaker 1: think they made some good moves. We'll talk about one
- 9:55Speaker 1: in just a moment, but but I think I think
- 10:00Speaker 1: when you don't make those moves, it puts all the
- 10:02Speaker 1: more pressure to make some bigger moves in the in
- 10:05Speaker 1: the offseason.
- 10:05Speaker 4: I mean, in the trade deadline, they made the one
- 10:09Speaker 4: big move.
- 10:09Speaker 1: We all thought another big move may come in the winter,
- 10:13Speaker 1: it didn't. And whether it was Bregman backing out on Heesuslizardo, like,
- 10:19Speaker 1: there were moves that were left on the table and
- 10:23Speaker 1: you wanted to see them follow through the trade deadline,
- 10:25Speaker 1: and that leads to more disappointment. There's money that wasn't spent.
- 10:29Speaker 1: We were told that Cody Bellinger money would be spent.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I think you and I kind of realized by the
- 10:35Speaker 1: end of the winter, oh wait, that's not being spent
- 10:39Speaker 1: at all. And and like I think Jed said when
- 10:43Speaker 1: I wasn't there at spring training at this point, but
- 10:45Speaker 1: you were there, and he basically said, you know, you
- 10:48Speaker 1: don't keep.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Your powder dry the chest. Yeah, yeah, is that what
- 10:52Speaker 4: it was?
- 10:52Speaker 1: You don't like, you don't sit on the money. So
- 10:55Speaker 1: I guess he kind of indicated what was happening.
- 10:58Speaker 4: But I don't know.
- 11:01Speaker 1: There's a there's a feeling of frustration and something left
- 11:04Speaker 1: on the table here. I think it can it can
- 11:07Speaker 1: work out. I think that's important to to understand. There's
- 11:11Speaker 1: a lot of intriguing editions. Uh no slam dunk. Addition,
- 11:15Speaker 1: let's talk about one real quickly here in the DraftKings
- 11:20Speaker 1: player spotlight. Uh so, Patrick, they they added Michael Soroka.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Uh Soroka Soroka. I guess I'll have to find out
- 11:34Speaker 1: know how to pronounce that by weekends and uh we
- 11:38Speaker 1: we talked about him maybe two weeks ago, three weeks
- 11:41Speaker 1: ago as a possibility. Uh, Soroka is a I I
- 11:45Speaker 1: like his peripherals. I like him as you know, a
- 11:50Speaker 1: low cost ad, although some would argue that that prospect
- 11:53Speaker 1: cost of Christian Franklin and Ronnie.
- 11:55Speaker 4: Cruz is is pretty high.
- 11:56Speaker 1: You know, I I've gotten the like there may not
- 12:00Speaker 1: be a more polarizing prospect in that system than Ronnie Cruz.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Some guys are just like, don't don't dig in on him.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Others are like, I like this guy a lot. He's
- 12:10Speaker 1: a future major league shorts up. So that's I mean,
- 12:12Speaker 1: But that's that's what it is when it's a teenager, right,
- 12:15Speaker 1: when it's a young dude drafted out of high school.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Christian Franklin's probably like a fourth or fifth outfielder on
- 12:23Speaker 1: a major league roster on a good one. Soroca strikes
- 12:28Speaker 1: guys out. He doesn't walk a ton of guys. He
- 12:32Speaker 1: he has had a great season in the past. A
- 12:34Speaker 1: lot of injuries recently have kept him from really maximizing
- 12:38Speaker 1: his value. My concern, you know, I liked it the
- 12:42Speaker 1: idea a few weeks ago. This last three starts dip
- 12:46Speaker 1: in like velocity by like three miles per hour. That's
- 12:50Speaker 1: that's the concern for me. I also don't know how
- 12:54Speaker 1: the Cubs will use him. I think he's going to
- 12:55Speaker 1: get some starts, but I also think he's an out getter,
- 12:57Speaker 1: and we could see him shifted to the bullpen when
- 12:59Speaker 1: James Tyne, Javier Asad, whoever is back. Part of the
- 13:04Speaker 1: reason why we're kind of like, why didn't they go
- 13:07Speaker 1: get a no doubt starters, because it's like, is this
- 13:09Speaker 1: guy a no doubt starter, even not a no doubt
- 13:11Speaker 1: playoff starter? Is he even gonna make twelve starts for
- 13:15Speaker 1: this team down the stretch?
- 13:17Speaker 2: That's exactly what I was thinking, Sahada of like, I
- 13:22Speaker 2: thought they'd get another guy just because if he's not
- 13:26Speaker 2: a slam dunk starter. Uh, it just creates a lot
- 13:31Speaker 2: more questions, like what if there are setbacks in the
- 13:36Speaker 2: recovery process for Tyon or Assad, or what if Kate
- 13:39Speaker 2: Horton just kind of hits a wall here. I think,
- 13:42Speaker 2: you know, Colin Ray has been really good about as
- 13:45Speaker 2: much as they could have hoped for. Having said all that,
- 13:51Speaker 2: this is why his name popped up on one of
- 13:54Speaker 2: our what We're hearing notebooks even before the All Star break.
- 13:58Speaker 2: I like the fact you know Soroka. I think that's
- 14:02Speaker 2: how Baseball Reference has the pronunciation. But I know, six',
- 14:06Speaker 2: five two hundred and fifty pounds first round, pick a
- 14:11Speaker 2: guy who's had success at a pretty high. LEVEL i,
- 14:15Speaker 2: mean you look at his twenty nineteen, SEASON i, mean
- 14:18Speaker 2: thirteen four to two point six EIGHT era twenty nine
- 14:21Speaker 2: starts like An All star. Potential obviously there's been some injury,
- 14:29Speaker 2: issues but it does continue this trend of The cubs
- 14:36Speaker 2: love those pitchers from the worst team of all time
- 14:40Speaker 2: last Year's White. SOX i, Mean Brad keller's been awesome for.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Them Chris flexen did as well as anyone could have
- 14:48Speaker 2: hoped for before he got dfaed this. Week AND i
- 14:51Speaker 2: do think there's something to this pitcher at this point
- 14:56Speaker 2: his career on this particular, team with this manager and coaching,
- 15:00Speaker 2: staff and with this defense behind. Him, MIKE i get.
- 15:03Speaker 1: It. Yeah, UH i want to talk more just about
- 15:08Speaker 1: the idea of getting, value uh and not not always
- 15:14Speaker 1: a star player being the most important. Thing but let's let's,
- 15:17Speaker 1: uh let's turn it over To jeremy for Our North
- 15:20Speaker 1: Side Territory producer.
- 15:21Speaker 5: Pick the dry spell continued last week with The marlins
- 15:25Speaker 5: upending The. Brewers so for this Week's North Side territory
- 15:28Speaker 5: producer pick no Parlays. Today i'm looking for a no sweat.
- 15:32Speaker 5: Bet i'm going to take The twins and The guardians
- 15:35Speaker 5: under seven. Runs The twins nearly traded their entire club
- 15:39Speaker 5: yesterday except For Joe, ryan who takes the ball tonight In.
- 15:42Speaker 5: Cleveland he might be asked to go the whole. DISTANCE
- 15:44Speaker 5: i don't know who's coming out of their. Bullpen this
- 15:47Speaker 5: line is, moving BUT i got it at minus one oh.
- 15:49Speaker 5: Six On DraftKings, Sportsbook i'm putting one hundred dollars down

- 16:36Speaker 1: Audio getting the biggest name doesn't mean you're going to
- 16:40Speaker 1: win The World series at the trade. Deadline you know
- 16:43Speaker 1: this Is it's just like the off. Season sometimes the
- 16:46Speaker 1: biggest splash doesn't doesn't impact the team as. MUCH i
- 16:50Speaker 1: think there's something to be said for these smaller. Moves
- 16:56Speaker 1: it doesn't have to be the biggest names to improve your. Team,
- 17:02Speaker 1: uh they have a good manager that knows how to
- 17:05Speaker 1: use his pitching.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Staff that like The Detroit. TIGERS i don't.
- 17:10Speaker 1: LIKE i don't love using outliers or randomness of baseball as,
- 17:15Speaker 1: like here's an example of something that happened that and
- 17:18Speaker 1: it went.
- 17:19Speaker 4: Well it doesn't always work that.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Way but last year The Detroit tigers traded away a
- 17:25Speaker 1: starter and did a bunch of bullpen games and and
- 17:28Speaker 1: they were the hottest team In baseball post trade.
- 17:31Speaker 4: DEADLINE i.
- 17:33Speaker 1: DON'T i don't think The cubs are have screwed. THEMSELVES
- 17:38Speaker 1: i don't think they're they're a bad team. Now Uh
- 17:42Speaker 1: LIKE i do think that there was you, KNOW i
- 17:45Speaker 1: would have liked to have seen them make a bigger,
- 17:47Speaker 1: move but, Uh, Soroka, Kittridge, rogers these are guys that
- 17:52Speaker 1: are gonna help their. Bullpen Uh and and they are
- 17:55Speaker 1: more trustworthy than the guys that they that that they are.
- 18:00Speaker 4: PLACING i think that.
- 18:02Speaker 1: HELPS i think that helps keep guys like you, said
- 18:04Speaker 1: Like Brad, keller Like Daniel, palencia Like Caleb. Thelbar it
- 18:07Speaker 1: keeps him fresher for down the stretch like you needed
- 18:11Speaker 1: someone Like. Rogers so you're not leaning On theeldbar all the.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Time Because palmerance was starting, to you, know show his
- 18:18Speaker 1: age and show his lack of you, know he hasn't
- 18:20Speaker 1: played pitch that. Much you want to use him. Less
- 18:24Speaker 1: hopefully this helps him. Too SO i think THEY'RE i
- 18:28Speaker 1: don't want to focus only on the. NEGATIVE i think
- 18:30Speaker 1: the team is. BETTER i think you have a manager
- 18:33Speaker 1: that knows how to use these pitchers and loves out
- 18:35Speaker 1: getters and will be creative and we'll get through, games
- 18:38Speaker 1: and now you have you're better set up to get
- 18:40Speaker 1: through these bullpen, games to get through these games until
- 18:43Speaker 1: jameson times ready to make, starts ready to eat seven innings,
- 18:47Speaker 1: again which may may not be right away when he comes.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Back SO i do think that they've they've improved their
- 18:54Speaker 1: team and that they're set up to have a solid second,
- 18:58Speaker 1: half solid five two. Months AND i don't know what
- 19:02Speaker 1: that means for the postseason, though but right NOW i
- 19:05Speaker 1: think they're a better, team AND i think it's it's
- 19:08Speaker 1: worthwhile to to amplify that instead of just focusing on
- 19:12Speaker 1: what they didn't.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Do, YEAH i think they can get a little too
- 19:16Speaker 2: cute with the outgetter stuff, Though like the outgetter stuff
- 19:18Speaker 2: worked In milwaukee when you Have Corbyn burns And Brandon
- 19:22Speaker 2: woodruff And Freddy, peralta and then on the back end
- 19:25Speaker 2: you have Like Josh hater And Devin. Williams BUT i
- 19:30Speaker 2: get where you're coming. FROM i get the. PHILOSOPHY i
- 19:34Speaker 2: definitely thought like just watching this team over the last
- 19:38Speaker 2: month or, so even though the the record has not been,
- 19:42Speaker 2: terrible there's been been so many like sloppy and lopsided
- 19:48Speaker 2: losses that you're just like this pitching staff just needs
- 19:51Speaker 2: like new, blood new. Energy just you, know What jed
- 19:59Speaker 2: talked about was just maximizing the entire twenty six man.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Roster AND i don't know if they totally accomplished, that
- 20:08Speaker 2: BUT i think they definitely made strides in that, direction
- 20:11Speaker 2: particularly on the pitching. SIDE i, mean you look at
- 20:15Speaker 2: the score, sheet look at the names on the. Bullpen
- 20:18Speaker 2: definitely a couple there that you could have circled. RECENTLY
- 20:24Speaker 2: i Mean flexen And pressley were two of. Them and
- 20:28Speaker 2: that's certainly giving counsel just more options will, help and
- 20:38Speaker 2: then they should have some decent. Depth we'll. See you,
- 20:45Speaker 2: know this is kind of a. Tangent i'm a little
- 20:47Speaker 2: surprised that maybe they didn't trade some of those change
- 20:51Speaker 2: of scenery, guys whether It's Ben brown Or Jordan. WICKS
- 20:56Speaker 2: i guess we'll. See MAYBE i don't, know do they
- 20:59Speaker 2: shorten Up Ben brown at some point? TOO i think
- 21:02Speaker 2: you almost have, to, uh there's They've they've given themselves
- 21:07Speaker 2: some flexibility here as well as some, depth and those
- 21:11Speaker 2: are like the two essential concepts to like what The cubs.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Do there's certain teams you mentioned, them The, Padres Chase,
- 21:19Speaker 2: stars they're constantly, churning you, know prospects for established major league.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Talent The astros take these big swings with an owner you,
- 21:29Speaker 2: know who gets involves and likes chasing those. Stars The
- 21:33Speaker 2: cubs are kind of a Boring midwest team that love
- 21:37Speaker 2: depth and flexibility and that are constantly worried about things
- 21:41Speaker 2: that could go. Wrong and that's not a bad way
- 21:45Speaker 2: to look at. IT i, mean it's pretty realistic and
- 21:49Speaker 2: we'll see kind of what plays over the next two plus.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Months, yeah like you, said there were just some pitching outings,
- 21:58Speaker 1: that you, know some outings that you had to make
- 22:01Speaker 1: changes that That Brewer. SERIES i think it really amplified
- 22:04Speaker 1: some of these. Issues Chris flexen was great for a
- 22:08Speaker 1: long stretch there two earned runs allowed for like his
- 22:13Speaker 1: first FIFTEEN i think, outings and then his last five
- 22:17Speaker 1: he gave up thirteen earned. Runs he gave up six,
- 22:21Speaker 1: homers eight e R it was it was rough and
- 22:26Speaker 1: he you, KNOW, i you, Know Ryan samberg passed away
- 22:29Speaker 1: and it kind of put The.
- 22:31Speaker 4: Brewer series to the, side and understandably.
- 22:35Speaker 1: So BUT i was starting to write, about you know,
- 22:38Speaker 1: this they have to upgrade this pitching. Staff Chris, flexen
- 22:42Speaker 1: you can't keep them around if you're a playoff. Team
- 22:46Speaker 1: and then they defade him the next, Day.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Ryan, Presley, LOOK i understand the beat.
- 22:51Speaker 1: THERE i understand making that move that WE i talked
- 22:56Speaker 1: about money. Before, hey they that was a money move
- 23:00Speaker 1: that they were adding some money. There they were willing
- 23:03Speaker 1: to take it, on betting on a veteran who has
- 23:06Speaker 1: a ton of postseason. Success it didn't work out here
- 23:12Speaker 1: in both these, Guys flexing And, Pressley, like you got
- 23:15Speaker 1: to give them props for the work they put. In
- 23:17Speaker 1: FLEXIN i think did a great job for a period
- 23:20Speaker 1: of time and probably won them some games by keeping
- 23:22Speaker 1: them in games and allowing that offense to. Shine pressley,
- 23:28Speaker 1: like it was almost to the point WHERE i could
- 23:32Speaker 1: you could like see it on his face every single
- 23:34Speaker 1: time he went out there, recently it seemed like he
- 23:38Speaker 1: was giving up what was, it, one, two, three four or?
- 23:41Speaker 1: Five four home runs in his last five. Outings it
- 23:44Speaker 1: seemed like every single time he was like it like
- 23:48Speaker 1: eight at, him LIKE i just gave up another. Run
- 23:51Speaker 1: he was so desperate to get back to that high
- 23:55Speaker 1: leverage spot and like get back to being a trusted
- 23:58Speaker 1: pitcher in that bull and it just.
- 24:00Speaker 4: Didn't it wasn't.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Happening and, uh he had some nice runs obviously he
- 24:06Speaker 1: had that historically.
- 24:06Speaker 4: Bed outing.
- 24:09Speaker 1: In the, end you, know it just just didn't work.
- 24:12Speaker 1: OUT i, mean a four thirty five era is it
- 24:14Speaker 1: the worst thing? Ever but it's ALSO i think watching
- 24:18Speaker 1: him go through the day to, day it was, Like, okay,
- 24:21Speaker 1: yeah this this isn't. Working fifteen point four percent strikeout,
- 24:25Speaker 1: rate nine point three percent walk, rate not going to
- 24:27Speaker 1: get it.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Done, no not sustainable h flexing as. Well not a
- 24:34Speaker 2: guy with like huge swinging miss. Stuff it's hard to
- 24:37Speaker 2: survive in the big leagues that. Way and, yeah and
- 24:42Speaker 2: then getting different, looks you, know additional experience in the
- 24:47Speaker 2: in the bullpen that effect you're talking About sahat ev,
- 24:53Speaker 2: of like other relievers are better when you know certain
- 24:58Speaker 2: guys carry the load or you know you can put
- 25:00Speaker 2: them in better. Matchups like you, KNOW i think of
- 25:03Speaker 2: What council talks, about how that bullpen is a team
- 25:06Speaker 2: within a, team that what one pitcher does oftentimes affects
- 25:11Speaker 2: another as you're trying to you find different segments of
- 25:15Speaker 2: the lineup to work against to keep guys healthy over
- 25:21Speaker 2: a longer period of. Time like all those things feed
- 25:25Speaker 2: into each. Other you. Know it also helps to have
- 25:29Speaker 2: a frontline, starter like you, say who will throw seven
- 25:32Speaker 2: innings every time. Out but those guys are increasingly rare
- 25:37Speaker 2: and even harder to acquire.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Quickly just Like Andrew, kittridge really good pitcher this. Year
- 25:44Speaker 1: his peripherals are like kind of better Than Caleb. DEALBAR'S
- 25:48Speaker 1: i know he's a, variety so it's, different but they're
- 25:52Speaker 1: they're really good. Peripherals they're you, know there's like two,
- 25:56Speaker 1: relievers three relievers with better Striker, no there's two relievers
- 26:00Speaker 1: with better strikeout rate Than Andrew kittridge on this. Staff
- 26:04Speaker 1: It's pomerants And. Palencia so you, KNOW i like that.
- 26:09Speaker 1: AD i know he's not a big, name but that's
- 26:12Speaker 1: a nice. Ad rogers is another you needed another. Lefty
- 26:16Speaker 1: you had to add another, lefty and it's a it's
- 26:20Speaker 1: a nice. Addition let's take a break and talk about
- 26:24Speaker 1: the one bat that they.
- 26:25Speaker 4: Added.
- 26:26Speaker 7: Krats If i'm new to card collecting And i'm looking
- 26:30Speaker 7: for the, safest most trusted way in the game to
- 26:33Speaker 7: acquire cards or to buy a, card but not go
- 26:36Speaker 7: through a ton of work Where i'm going to the,
- 26:39Speaker 7: Shows i'm going online to an. AUCTIONS i want it
- 26:41Speaker 7: all in one.
- 26:42Speaker 4: Place i'm going To Arena.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Club it's all one. Place you know you're getting a good,
- 26:47Speaker 3: price whether you're buying it or you're selling. Cards if
- 26:50Speaker 3: you're new to, it you don't want all the other crappy.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Cards you can get the ones that you. Want you
- 26:56Speaker 3: can start your collection and if you get them On Arina,
- 26:58Speaker 3: club your COLLECTION a look.
- 27:00Speaker 7: Boals that's, right and MAY i mention they also Have
- 27:04Speaker 7: pokemon cards in those slab packs that we talk about every.
- 27:07Speaker 4: Week you can rip a pack for as.
- 27:09Speaker 7: Low as twenty five dollars and hit on a card
- 27:11Speaker 7: that's worth tens of thousands of dollars because every pack
- 27:15Speaker 7: has grails that are at least twenty x the price
- 27:18Speaker 7: of the. Pack so get involved at arenaclub dot com
- 27:21Speaker 7: slash vul use the code foul to get twenty percent
- 27:23Speaker 7: off your first slab pack or card.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Purchase of all the moves they, MADE i THINK i
- 27:31Speaker 1: like The Willie.
- 27:32Speaker 4: Castro won the. Most.
- 27:35Speaker 1: Agreed, HONESTLY i think it it has a chance to
- 27:38Speaker 1: be like a really impactful.
- 27:41Speaker 4: Move this is a team that hasn't had the of
- 27:44Speaker 4: late the.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Best success against Lefties Willi castro crushes. Lefties he can
- 27:50Speaker 1: play all over.
- 27:52Speaker 4: That Ian happ's.
- 27:54Speaker 1: SHIN i know he homer in the last game against
- 27:57Speaker 1: The breweries on a pinch. HIT i, know you know
- 28:00Speaker 1: He's he's likely going to be out there every. Day
- 28:02Speaker 1: But Willy caster can play some left. Field Matt shaw
- 28:05Speaker 1: a bad, matchup Put Willy kaster at third. Base Dansby
- 28:11Speaker 1: swanson needs a, Break Nico horner needs a, Break Kor
- 28:14Speaker 1: armstrong gets banged, up anything like. That this guy can play.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Wherever AND i AND i think he's a pretty good,
- 28:21Speaker 1: bat especially with the lefty on the. Mound he's a
- 28:24Speaker 1: really good. Bat he's an average bat probably with the
- 28:27Speaker 1: righty on the. MOUND i just really like the. ADDITION
- 28:30Speaker 1: i think it's the type of move that that you,
- 28:33Speaker 1: know Au Henni osuarez gets a ton of. Ink Carlos
- 28:38Speaker 1: korea is going to get the. HEADLINES i wouldn't rule
- 28:42Speaker 1: Out Willy caster being the most as far as the
- 28:44Speaker 1: final two months of the, season being one of the
- 28:46Speaker 1: best bats moved, in one of the most impactful. Players
- 28:51Speaker 1: LIKE i think this offense needed, something the bench, needed
- 28:55Speaker 1: something you needed to upgrade in some, way whether it
- 28:58Speaker 1: was the bench or the. LINEUP i think this does
- 29:00Speaker 1: both because you can play them every day all over the,
- 29:03Speaker 1: place and you can also that just improves the batch
- 29:06Speaker 1: in the.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Depth, YEAH i still Think suarez is probably gonna be more,
- 29:10Speaker 2: impactful BUT i agree with everything Else in, ALL i
- 29:14Speaker 2: GOT i gotcha for this team. Though castro fits extremely.
- 29:19Speaker 2: WELL i, mean twenty eight years, old a Recent All
- 29:25Speaker 2: star according to our Buddy Dan, hayes or at Least
- 29:30Speaker 2: i'm assuming he wrote this part of one of our
- 29:32Speaker 2: many pre rights on OUR mlb. Desk castro's like, great
- 29:39Speaker 2: like clubhouse dude as, well like you see it if
- 29:42Speaker 2: he's willing to play, everywhere like those guys usually have
- 29:45Speaker 2: that sort of attitude and. Aptitude but, again someone who's
- 29:51Speaker 2: in a really nice point in his, career and you,
- 29:57Speaker 2: KNOW i think circling back to kind of where the.
- 29:59Speaker 2: Started like with, prospects it is so hard to become
- 30:06Speaker 2: an everyday player in the major, leagues just to stay
- 30:11Speaker 2: healthy enough to keep earning those opportunities to reach free,
- 30:17Speaker 2: agency to get into your mid twenties and still be.
- 30:20Speaker 2: Playing mayors like those guys are, rare and that's WHY
- 30:24Speaker 2: i think ones who do it get paid a ton of.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Money and you, Know castro's not a huge. Name he's
- 30:34Speaker 2: a different form of an everyday type. Player but you,
- 30:39Speaker 2: know we've said it, before this has been a remarkably
- 30:42Speaker 2: healthy group of position. Players and obviously no one's wishing
- 30:47Speaker 2: for injuries or you, know but they happen all the.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Time and JUST i don't, know the law of averages
- 30:55Speaker 2: makes you think like something else is going to happen to.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Here AND i mean he and happen looked good, enough you,
- 31:01Speaker 2: know city felt good. Enough but just the way this sport,
- 31:05Speaker 2: works like all it takes is you, know a foul,
- 31:08Speaker 2: ball a hit by, pitch running into a, wall a
- 31:12Speaker 2: collision in the, outfield whatever it, is like that is
- 31:15Speaker 2: going to. Happen and to have a guy like you,
- 31:17Speaker 2: say who can Spell, nico who could Spell DANSBY, pca
- 31:24Speaker 2: whatever you want to, do like same way certain bullpen
- 31:27Speaker 2: guys are you know What Joe madden would call force
- 31:30Speaker 2: multipliers like this, Guy Willie castro can help other guys stay.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Fresh if you want to play through the end Of,
- 31:38Speaker 2: october you're gonna need, it you, know to get through
- 31:41Speaker 2: the dog days Of, august and to give you some matchup.
- 31:44Speaker 2: Advantages In, September so it's a big.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Deal, Yeah, NO I i, INSTANTLY i think We this
- 31:52Speaker 1: was one of the names we identified decently early on as,
- 31:55Speaker 1: well AND i always thought like, this you, know this
- 32:00Speaker 1: is going to be hard to pry away because there's
- 32:02Speaker 1: going to be so much competition for. Him but this
- 32:05Speaker 1: was a this seemed more. Realistic it was all about
- 32:08Speaker 1: did the twins fall out of? It and, wow did
- 32:11Speaker 1: the twins? Not they didn't go. That that wasn't a
- 32:14Speaker 1: half measure what they. DID i was kind of shocked
- 32:17Speaker 1: at how aggressive they. Were it was almost like where's
- 32:20Speaker 1: The Joe ryan? Trade because they moved everyone. Else, uh it,
- 32:26Speaker 1: was it. Was it was a little jarring to see
- 32:28Speaker 1: all those. MOVES i thought, that you, know most teams
- 32:31Speaker 1: just don't do. THAT i just don't see, that not
- 32:34Speaker 1: especially when not every single one of them was a.
- 32:37Speaker 4: Rental. Uh but, yes this was a nice addition for.
- 32:41Speaker 1: THEM i think when we talk about undervalued or overlooked
- 32:47Speaker 1: moves two months from, now we may, say, like, wow
- 32:50Speaker 1: did that save the cub season in some way because
- 32:55Speaker 1: Player rex was hurt for a month or or just
- 32:58Speaker 1: was slumping and they needed someone to go in.
- 33:00Speaker 4: There you, know.
- 33:03Speaker 1: There's there's a lot of little things that this guy
- 33:05Speaker 1: can help with and and you, KNOW i think he makes.
- 33:09Speaker 1: It he makes a real difference for this. Group, yeah,
- 33:13Speaker 1: sorry go, On, NO i.
- 33:15Speaker 2: Think that's a good call. Too of like the two,
- 33:16Speaker 2: months you never, know, Right like sometimes It's Nick castillanos
- 33:21Speaker 2: and sometimes Jam Er candelario gets, hurt you, KNOW i,
- 33:25Speaker 2: mean you're just kind of stuck for basically half the
- 33:28Speaker 2: time you have the. Guy and SO i think With
- 33:32Speaker 2: castro there's a lot of potential and upside there for
- 33:34Speaker 2: him to help it in different ways and maybe even
- 33:37Speaker 2: scenarios we're not even envisioning right.
- 33:39Speaker 4: Now.
- 33:40Speaker 1: Yeah and, uh one final point on the, OFFENSE i
- 33:43Speaker 1: think we're going to see these young guys come up
- 33:47Speaker 1: at least by serious is already. UP i wonder if
- 33:50Speaker 1: we're going to See casey at some point. SOON i
- 33:53Speaker 1: don't know how you play.
- 33:56Speaker 4: Them regularly really if everybody's.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Healthy but maybe it's a you, Know Jesse rogers kind
- 34:02Speaker 1: of asked the question To.
- 34:03Speaker 4: JED i think it's a fair, one is. It just
- 34:05Speaker 4: don't overthink this best twenty.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Six you, know player development maybe goes out the window
- 34:09Speaker 1: for a couple of months here and you.
- 34:11Speaker 4: Just you find. Ways you play straight.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Matchups you just play the best the best guys every, day, pinch, hit,
- 34:18Speaker 1: aggressively do all these different, things and then when it's
- 34:20Speaker 1: twenty eight man in a month.
- 34:22Speaker 4: From, now you can be even more aggressive with.
- 34:25Speaker 1: IT i think it's going to be. INTERESTING i think
- 34:27Speaker 1: we're going to see some aggressive. Moves Miguel amia is
- 34:29Speaker 1: going to come. Back who gets Dfaate is That John?
- 34:31Speaker 1: Birdie now That Willie castro's? Here Does John birdie really
- 34:34Speaker 1: have a role on this. Roster there's there's a lot
- 34:38Speaker 1: of moves. Coming this team is deeper and. BETTER i
- 34:43Speaker 1: understand there's plenty of, disappointment and it's. Valid i'm very
- 34:47Speaker 1: curious to see how this team plays down the stretch
- 34:50Speaker 1: because that they are a better, team and they've been
- 34:53Speaker 1: second best record or tied for the second best record
- 34:56Speaker 1: right now in, Baseball so there could be hand. Ring
- 35:00Speaker 1: but also we got to keep perspective here about how
- 35:02Speaker 1: good this team actually. Is so it should be a,
- 35:06Speaker 1: good a fun final two months if we can put
- 35:10Speaker 1: the disappointment of the trade deadline behind us uh and
- 35:13Speaker 1: and see what they can. Do because they're they're gonna
- 35:15Speaker 1: make noise it's not like they pack it in now
- 35:18Speaker 1: because they didn't get you, Know Mackenzie gore Or Joe.
- 35:20Speaker 4: Ryan.
- 35:22Speaker 2: YEAH i mean like If Joe ryan McKenzie gore was
- 35:26Speaker 2: walking down the, street would you even notice? Them you,
- 35:27Speaker 2: know like we're not we're not talking ABOUT.
- 35:31Speaker 1: I think the ladies Like Joe Ryan. Patrick the ladies
- 35:35Speaker 1: Like Joe. Ryan he's a he's a good looking.
- 35:37Speaker 4: Man.
- 35:37Speaker 2: OKAY I i was not talking about anyone's, well not
- 35:43Speaker 2: as much as. Yet just the you, know like there
- 35:49Speaker 2: are they were kind of The internet and they're very good.
- 35:51Speaker 2: Pictures no doubt you'd want them on your. Team but you,
- 35:55Speaker 2: KNOW i don't know if this is passing On Justin
- 36:00Speaker 2: verlander or like you would have gotten you, KNOW Cc,
- 36:04Speaker 2: sabbathia you know what he did for The, Brewers like you,
- 36:09Speaker 2: know the pitching, game the prominence of starters have certainly
- 36:13Speaker 2: diminished somewhat so and plus like now we can now
- 36:17Speaker 2: we have trade rumors for these guys.
- 36:21Speaker 1: About WHAT i don't think we're done hearing trade rumors
- 36:24Speaker 1: like maybe.
- 36:25Speaker 2: The, nationals you, know whether they stick with the interim
- 36:28Speaker 2: guy or. Not like there's a baseline, there like there's
- 36:31Speaker 2: still you know a whole set of, uh you, Know
- 36:34Speaker 2: marlin's conversations to revisit like that's you, know endless.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Fodder, yeah, we'll, we'll we'll talk more trade rumors in
- 36:43Speaker 1: three months or, so, uh three or four months when,
- 36:47Speaker 1: whenever whenever THE gm meetings start up. Again all, Right,
- 36:50Speaker 1: PATRICK i think we're good. There trade deadline has come and.
- 36:53Speaker 1: Gone uh, yeah that was it was. Hectic it may
- 36:58Speaker 1: not have been exactly what you. Wanted this is a better.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Team i'm curious to see how it all plays. Out
- 37:02Speaker 1: they're going to play a much Depleted Baltimore orioles team this.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Weekend they you, know they need to get. Going they
- 37:12Speaker 1: need to start looking. Better maybe maybe they'll be a
- 37:14Speaker 1: little jolt in that clubhouse and they'll be ready to
- 37:17Speaker 1: go for the final two months of the.
- 37:19Speaker 4: Season thanks so much for listening to. Everyone this Is Northside.
