- 1:50Speaker 1: NFL Podcast of the Year. All the all the training
- 1:54Speaker 1: camps are or roll out, They're gonna be playing this weekend,
- 1:59Speaker 1: but they're rolling it and so you'll get some exhibition
- 2:03Speaker 1: games and we'll see what plays out. As far as
- 2:07Speaker 1: the quarterback musical chairs from this offseason, huh. And that
- 2:11Speaker 1: crazy too is not with the Dolphins. Kyler Murray's not
- 2:13Speaker 1: with the Cardinals. I mean, you got you got all
- 2:15Speaker 1: these pieces moving around and and then you got some
- 2:20Speaker 1: guys who are close to the reup and the question is,
- 2:25Speaker 1: you know, will they be reupt and we'll we'll take
- 2:30Speaker 1: a look at that as the season unfolds, and a
- 2:33Speaker 1: lot of you are asking the question, is Tyler shuck
- 2:36Speaker 1: Out of the University of Louisville who played if it
- 2:41Speaker 1: eventually started as a rookie? Is he the guy for
- 2:46Speaker 1: New Orleans like for six, seven, eight, nine, ten years, right?
- 2:51Speaker 1: And is Kellen Moore of the guy? Can can they
- 2:54Speaker 1: improve a little bit from last year? I can't wait
- 2:59Speaker 1: to see that. The NFC South, it's a we talked
- 3:03Speaker 1: about the SEC the last couple of years. It's a
- 3:05Speaker 1: good time to be good. It's a good time to
- 3:09Speaker 1: be good in the NFC South, But your window could
- 3:13Speaker 1: close because you could have two teams figure it out.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Tampa Bay's pretty damn good, right, But Atlanta and Carolina
- 3:19Speaker 1: and New Orleans have lost their way for the most part.
- 3:21Speaker 1: You know, they're trying to figure it out. We'll see
- 3:23Speaker 1: what happens in Atlanta with Michael Pennix and Tua and uh,
- 3:28Speaker 1: Bryce Young, I don't know. And then you got Baker.
- 3:33Speaker 1: I mean, Baker's by far and away the most accomplished
- 3:36Speaker 1: quarterback in the NFC set. What did you just say?
- 3:39Speaker 1: The Falcons? Oh, you don't think they've got anybody to
- 3:43Speaker 1: love that? I roll them all out there. Okay, they're
- 3:46Speaker 1: not any good?
- 3:48Speaker 2: Who's scaring you? Pennix hadn't seen the guy in three years.
- 3:53Speaker 2: He seen Pennis in forever to he doesn't even count anymore.
- 3:56Speaker 2: He's any good.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I think two has been solid solid, Yeah, a little
- 4:04Speaker 1: squishy solid. Yeah.
- 4:06Speaker 3: I mean.
- 4:09Speaker 2: They didn't have one really good. Well, I'll say it
- 4:10Speaker 2: went really good. They had a couple of almost ten
- 4:13Speaker 2: win years or maybe a ten win season one time.
- 4:15Speaker 1: I think, yeah, he's just well people so because he's
- 4:19Speaker 1: from a big brand and walked off Georgia in the
- 4:23Speaker 1: National Championship Game. That meant he was supposed to be
- 4:26Speaker 1: unbelievable in the NFL and that's not how it worked.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Cardel Jones found the mojo for one month in college
- 4:35Speaker 1: one month, and I mean also, Ohio State's defense was
- 4:39Speaker 1: number one in the country and they had an unbelievable
- 4:42Speaker 1: running game, and we're the best team in the line
- 4:45Speaker 1: of scrimmage on the offensive line of defensive line, and
- 4:47Speaker 1: people thought Cardell Jones is going to be the next
- 4:50Speaker 1: Da Da Da Da Da da da. And then the
- 4:52Speaker 1: next year I remember watching him in I think Game
- 4:55Speaker 1: two against Purdue, who doesn't have players, and he was
- 5:02Speaker 1: throwing the ball ten yards to the left and right
- 5:05Speaker 1: of receivers and I thought, he is who you thought,
- 5:09Speaker 1: Yeah he was. Actually Chris Ralph was more accurate than
- 5:14Speaker 1: Cardill Jones, but because he won a national championship, that
- 5:18Speaker 1: meant that he was supposed to be incredible. I remember
- 5:20Speaker 1: saying that Dak was better than Cardel, and I had
- 5:23Speaker 1: these guys on the text line that were all in
- 5:26Speaker 1: a you know whatever. I don't know what Cardel's doing today.
- 5:29Speaker 1: He maybe I hope he's doing something awesome, but he's
- 5:33Speaker 1: not starting in the NFL.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Did one of the most awesome things of all time.
- 5:37Speaker 2: I mean, he'd beat a kid in the hospital in
- 5:39Speaker 2: Madden like one hundred and twelve to two?
- 5:43Speaker 1: Did he really? Did they do it? Like on video?
- 5:49Speaker 1: That's cool? Like a kid was in the children's hospitality
- 5:52Speaker 1: what he wanted to play with him. He's like, all right, well,
- 5:54Speaker 1: but the kids said, don't take it easy.
- 5:56Speaker 2: I probably wouldn't let up after like twenty but and
- 5:59Speaker 2: I run it up Hardell p one hundred and twelve
- 6:02Speaker 2: is like three as well as something bad and.
- 6:04Speaker 1: They videoed it. Oh my god, awesome. But you know
- 6:07Speaker 1: what else, Cardell Jones, I'm not taking He'll always be
- 6:10Speaker 1: a National Championship QB. Yeah. Now, was he gonna play
- 6:13Speaker 1: in the NFL? No, but he'll always be a National
- 6:17Speaker 1: Championship TV. I keep thinking about what Mike Leach said,
- 6:21Speaker 1: you either are accurate or you're not now. I think
- 6:26Speaker 1: Mike drew a pretty hard line, and I do think
- 6:29Speaker 1: that there are exceptions. But Mike's theory was you're either
- 6:34Speaker 1: you're either an accurate passer by the time you're a
- 6:36Speaker 1: senior in high school, or you're not going to be now.
- 6:39Speaker 1: There have been players work, work, work and get better.
- 6:44Speaker 1: And Dak's a great example. He carried the load at
- 6:46Speaker 1: Halton by just run I mean through some but running
- 6:49Speaker 1: the football and then he became a refined, Polish passer
- 6:51Speaker 1: under Mullinan in the NFL. But good boy, Mike, Mike
- 6:56Speaker 1: Drew a hard line and he was like, you can
- 6:58Speaker 1: either make the throw in the window or you can't. Yeah,
- 7:04Speaker 1: so you may be.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Able to add, you know, a couple of percentage points,
- 7:07Speaker 2: but she ain't going up five to ten percent.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Hey you remember? No, Well that's the I love you.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I love your extremism. I mean ten percent. It's like me.
- 7:18Speaker 1: I mean, if you're a fifty four percent you know,
- 7:21Speaker 1: completion rate, then you go to sixty four. That's insane. Yeah,
- 7:24Speaker 1: you're not going to fifty seven, you know. I always
- 7:26Speaker 1: think about this. Can you imagine if Drew Brees would
- 7:29Speaker 1: have played for Mike Leech at Texas Tech? He was
- 7:31Speaker 1: already gone. I mean, Mike wasn't at Texas Tech by then,
- 7:34Speaker 1: so he did. Mike didn't pass on Drew like everybody
- 7:37Speaker 1: did in the state of Texas for Drew to go
- 7:38Speaker 1: to Purdue. But can you imagine Drew Brees in the
- 7:41Speaker 1: air raid in college? No, just slicing and dicing people.
- 7:45Speaker 1: I don't know if you have an arm as accurate
- 7:46Speaker 1: as Drew.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Was.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Is ridiculous. That was ridiculous. Here's what hed Hey, the
- 7:56Speaker 1: out of Bounds show is brought to you by Southern
- 7:58Speaker 1: ag Credit. They're financing life outside the city limits. Southern
- 8:03Speaker 1: ag Credit is right there on Highland Colony in Regland,
- 8:08Speaker 1: and they do a great job. They've got a great team.
- 8:10Speaker 1: They've got offices around the state. For example, when I
- 8:12Speaker 1: was at the Steve Azar event, there's a beautiful Southern
- 8:16Speaker 1: ag Credit office in Greenville. So Southern ag Credit dot com.
- 8:24Speaker 1: And they've got the Ridgeland office and offices around the state.
- 8:28Speaker 1: They will finance your life outside the city limits. Southern
- 8:33Speaker 1: ag Credit dot Com. Southernag Credit dot Com in Ridgeland, Mississippi.
- 8:38Speaker 1: I think you did you just call Baker Mayfield trash No, no, no, no, oh, okay, okay,
- 8:43Speaker 1: it was. It was Tua and Bryce, Yeah, two of Bryce.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I think I like Pandix, but I just haven't seen him. Yeah,
- 8:53Speaker 1: he's not there. Well, we'll see who wins that battle
- 8:57Speaker 1: this this next four weeks, Tua or Pinnix. I mean,
- 9:01Speaker 1: I know people are betting on to him because he
- 9:03Speaker 1: has all the pt under his belt, and I get
- 9:05Speaker 1: that and also I think may have sent us a
- 9:08Speaker 1: message as he's still hurt, right right, right, But also
- 9:14Speaker 1: is he accurate enough? I mean, the bottom line is
- 9:16Speaker 1: short and intermediate passing game in the NFL again, Aliddrew, Brees,
- 9:21Speaker 1: Tom Brady, Peyton Manning. I mean, among many, many, many others,
- 9:28Speaker 1: can you fit it in a window about the size
- 9:31Speaker 1: of a paper plate, consistently with insane dbs and free
- 9:38Speaker 1: safeties and strong safeties covering wide receivers, slides and tight
- 9:41Speaker 1: ends and some linebackers back in a second look Ferry,
- 10:00Speaker 1: h m hm mm hmmmmm.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Guys, I don't have time for that speculation.
- 10:13Speaker 1: We're out of bounds. ESPN one oh five nine the Zone.
- 10:17Speaker 1: I can't wait. High school football, college football, NFL, It's
- 10:24Speaker 1: gonna be a fantastic Every year is fun. I mean,
- 10:29Speaker 1: we get all these great games, you know, and well right,
- 10:34Speaker 1: we got the straight font Te's of the week brought
- 10:37Speaker 1: to you by the Peter malar Ole miss and Mississippi
- 10:40Speaker 1: State gear at the Roguemen's Store. So I mean, you're
- 10:42Speaker 1: gonna make people money, I mean, straight font Tees of
- 10:47Speaker 1: the week. But we're gonna have great games. We'll have
- 10:55Speaker 1: high school football just around the corner. You'll be able
- 10:57Speaker 1: to listen to Madison Ridgeland Academy right here on the
- 11:00Speaker 1: ESPN one five nine of the zone for the twelfth
- 11:03Speaker 1: or thirteenth year. Herbert Davis still there. He's won three titles,
- 11:08Speaker 1: played for a bunch, driven a bunch of players to
- 11:13Speaker 1: sec among other power for conferences and G six and
- 11:20Speaker 1: junior college and D two and everything else. So and
- 11:25Speaker 1: I know everybody has expectations, and you know, I want
- 11:32Speaker 1: to get to the playoffs high school and college football
- 11:35Speaker 1: in the NFL and I can't wait. Uh, this weekend
- 11:39Speaker 1: will be a little bit of a teaser, but excited
- 11:41Speaker 1: for Drew Brees going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame,
- 11:44Speaker 1: first ballot Hall of Famer. Austin reminded me, this is fun.
- 11:52Speaker 1: On the text line, Austin reminded me about us having
- 11:55Speaker 1: Ricky Jackson on the show. Nice. It was a disaster,
- 12:00Speaker 1: So how did this happen? Anyway, great linebacker for the
- 12:08Speaker 1: New Orleans Saints. I loved watching him play. Pat Swilling
- 12:11Speaker 1: was my favorite, but I loved all four of the
- 12:13Speaker 1: Dome patrol or whatever. We so we get this thing
- 12:21Speaker 1: set up and we call Ricky Jackson and he's asleep.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Nice obvious. So the whole interview he's yawning and and
- 12:32Speaker 1: it's it's it's bizarre, we're laughing and uh but I'm
- 12:37Speaker 1: glad Austin reminded me of that, and uh yeah, I
- 12:43Speaker 1: think he fell asleep. He may have fallen asleep back
- 12:48Speaker 1: asleep during the interview. That's how compelling and amazing. My
- 12:52Speaker 1: questions were, who was the guy that we used to
- 12:56Speaker 1: have on he's the number one guy, and he's like,
- 13:00Speaker 1: but he's the number one guy in Houston, Texas. McLean.
- 13:05Speaker 1: He fell asleep on an interview with Nashville Sports Talk Radio,
- 13:11Speaker 1: and so they just let him. He started kind of
- 13:13Speaker 1: snoring and they just let Obviously they were we tape
- 13:17Speaker 1: everything just like us, right, Yeah, Todd Sandres was just
- 13:20Speaker 1: in here. That's going to be on Spotify and Apple
- 13:23Speaker 1: podcast and YouTube. But it was also you know, taped
- 13:26Speaker 1: on a system over there that Jackson has. They just
- 13:30Speaker 1: let McLean, you know, he does Houston Texans Rockets Astros.
- 13:35Speaker 1: They just let him sit there and kind of snore
- 13:37Speaker 1: and laugh. It was really funny. That's incredible. Yeah, that's awesome.
- 13:41Speaker 1: That's good radio. Yeah, I love that. But Ricky Jackson,
- 13:47Speaker 1: I think fell asleep during our interview. Yeah, he was
- 13:51Speaker 1: asleep when we called him. I don't know why I
- 13:55Speaker 1: thought I needed to book him at seven thirty. That
- 13:58Speaker 1: just wasn't If you notice, we left that window open
- 14:02Speaker 1: for the most part, unless lougan Bille, unless a guest
- 14:05Speaker 1: has to grab it, right, we've left it open the
- 14:09Speaker 1: last few years. There was another as we go through
- 14:12Speaker 1: different iterations of the show, there was another time where
- 14:15Speaker 1: I thought we just had to have somebody at seven thirty,
- 14:17Speaker 1: and then we found out people want to kind of
- 14:20Speaker 1: wake up and have some fun and bounce around some
- 14:23Speaker 1: topics before getting into an interview. I'm pretty damn sure
- 14:28Speaker 1: we had Ricky Jackson at seven thirty in the morning.
- 14:31Speaker 1: He was asleep when we called him, and I think
- 14:32Speaker 1: he fell back asleep about seven forty or seven forty
- 14:35Speaker 1: five on the air. I still love you, Ricky, and
- 14:38Speaker 1: you were a great player, but it was It's funny
- 14:40Speaker 1: now he was going in the Hall of Fame though
- 14:42Speaker 1: he's a saint normOn Saints, and that was the first
- 14:45Speaker 1: time they kind of bottled anything worth of dam you know,
- 14:49Speaker 1: nineteen sixty seven, they roll out. They weren't even good.
- 14:52Speaker 1: And then in the late eighties early nineties they kind
- 14:54Speaker 1: of found with Abart and four kad and but that
- 14:59Speaker 1: d is what as you know is Bawn and and
- 15:03Speaker 1: Swilling and Jackson and and those guys. Uh, Sam Mills,
- 15:07Speaker 1: I could not pull that. God Mike Ntilier talks about.
- 15:10Speaker 1: I mean, he puts Sam Mills on a big time,
- 15:17Speaker 1: big time pedestal. I mean it was like five eight
- 15:21Speaker 1: or nine and started in pro football forever at linebacker
- 15:27Speaker 1: because he's just damn smart and unbelievable instincts. God, I mean,
- 15:32Speaker 1: and he would drill, you know, talking about somebody who
- 15:34Speaker 1: could get low and tackle you at the knees. Damn
- 15:38Speaker 1: what you got, dude. The McLain, John McLain, John, this
- 15:42Speaker 1: is incredible. Joh, thank you. I think John McClain was
- 15:46Speaker 1: was was uh John McClain was, was Bruce Willis in
- 15:52Speaker 1: Die Hard? Yeah. And John McLain also covers the Texans
- 15:55Speaker 1: here in Houston, Texas metro area of sports. It was
- 15:59Speaker 1: a seven it combo was and he was he was
- 16:02Speaker 1: snoring by minute three. That is incredible. I just remember that.
- 16:07Speaker 1: I need to scan the audio, but we may have it.
- 16:10Speaker 1: I bet it's funny. Dude.
- 16:13Speaker 2: That's that's he's quoted. They asked him about it. He said,
- 16:15Speaker 2: it's some of the best radio I've ever done. And
- 16:19Speaker 2: but apparently Mike Francesca he fell asleep prior to that.
- 16:22Speaker 1: That doesn't surprise me, no, Mike Francesca. Yeah, Franciska, uh,
- 16:28Speaker 1: you know, he and the mad Dog, they were two
- 16:31Speaker 1: of the guys that really got sports talk radio going
- 16:38Speaker 1: in nineteen eighty seven or eighty eight with the Fan
- 16:40Speaker 1: in New York. My gosh, yeah, that doesn't surprise me
- 16:43Speaker 1: whatsoever that he fell sleep. He's asleep. That's pretty awesome.
- 16:47Speaker 1: That's pretty awesome. You know, Bar two fell asleep. This
- 16:51Speaker 1: is so funny. Bar two is is not old, no,
- 16:55Speaker 1: but he's he acts old. And when we were driving
- 17:01Speaker 1: back from Pearl River Resort and Dancing Rabbit Off Club
- 17:06Speaker 1: from doing that five hour show that we did, and
- 17:09Speaker 1: I'm driving to the airport, Yeah, it was funny as hell.
- 17:14Speaker 1: I took a phone call in the car. I mean,
- 17:17Speaker 1: he's sitting right beside me and Shotgun. I took a
- 17:20Speaker 1: phone call and he didn't wake up. I'm like, damn,
- 17:23Speaker 1: that's impressive. Like he can sleep on them. I can't
- 17:26Speaker 1: sleep in a plane. I can't sleep in a car,
- 17:29Speaker 1: you know. I mean, room's got to be cold, it's
- 17:31Speaker 1: got to be dark. I gotta get I gotta get
- 17:34Speaker 1: down to the boxers. Like these people that can like
- 17:36Speaker 1: fall asleep on their couch in the living room. I
- 17:38Speaker 1: can't do any of that. I gotta be in the bed.
- 17:41Speaker 1: It's got to be cold. Yeah, it's got to be dark,
- 17:45Speaker 1: the whole thing.
- 17:46Speaker 3: No, I mean, I got it.
- 17:47Speaker 1: I can't. I don't want to lay down in jeans
- 17:51Speaker 1: or pants or whatever. No, I don't know why I
- 17:56Speaker 1: went off on that. Oh well, all right. This show
- 18:00Speaker 1: is brought to you by Mississippi State University College of Business.

- 21:51Speaker 3: Right? Uh? Yeah, I have a fifth on the way
- 21:54Speaker 3: of this month too. By the way. So we're getting
- 21:57Speaker 3: even crazier over here.
- 21:58Speaker 1: I thought we had a to me conversation a while back.
- 22:03Speaker 3: I didn't listen.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Oh okay, all right, So so you're now going to
- 22:08Speaker 1: have a basketball team. Uh you've got four well? Uh like,
- 22:13Speaker 1: how how much energy did you exert on a daily
- 22:17Speaker 1: basis having four boys at the beach step?
- 22:22Speaker 3: So it's actually good because they all play with each other,
- 22:24Speaker 3: so they all entertain each other. They're at the stage
- 22:27Speaker 3: where you know, in the neighborhood here too, they run
- 22:29Speaker 3: off and play baseball with their friends. It's actually good.
- 22:32Speaker 3: They're all entertaining each other. Now we're gonna reset things
- 22:35Speaker 3: with the baby that the baby's gonna need all the
- 22:37Speaker 3: energy At this point, I think, all.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Right, let's let's get into some minute. I gotta ask
- 22:43Speaker 1: you about Breeze for I cannot. By the way, congratulations,
- 22:47Speaker 1: I mean, do you do you is it a do
- 22:50Speaker 1: you know if it's a boy or a girl?
- 22:52Speaker 3: Yeah, it's another boy.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Unbelievable fodd boys. All right, so you do have a
- 22:58Speaker 1: basketball team. Okay, let's go to Drew Brees in the
- 23:02Speaker 1: modern era. I mean, let's just say in the two thousands,
- 23:05Speaker 1: from two thousand to today is Drew Brees, without a
- 23:11Speaker 1: doubt a top five QB for you.
- 23:14Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I mean I always I always look at
- 23:16Speaker 3: this era as I mean, Mahomes will start to change
- 23:19Speaker 3: things a little bit, or Josh Allen, you know, might
- 23:22Speaker 3: be able to change things a little bit. But I
- 23:23Speaker 3: always look at that era as Brady, Manning, Rogers and Breeze,
- 23:27Speaker 3: and I think they were always the four elite quarterbacks.
- 23:32Speaker 3: I think they were a step above the other tiers
- 23:35Speaker 3: of quarterbacks, you know, the Ben Roethlisberger's, Philip Rivers, Matt Ryan,
- 23:39Speaker 3: Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson, that group, Matthew Stafford you know
- 23:42Speaker 3: at points in his career because he's been around for
- 23:45Speaker 3: a while. But yeah, at Breeze absolutely in that top
- 23:49Speaker 3: echelon of elite quarterbacks during that era. And yeah, it's
- 23:52Speaker 3: good to see him get the Hall of Fame accolades
- 23:56Speaker 3: this weekend.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Absolutely, if you could pinpoint one thing that separated him
- 24:01Speaker 1: or made him special, Drew Brees, what would it be
- 24:05Speaker 1: for you, Steve?
- 24:06Speaker 3: So I'll I'll give you two answers here, because a
- 24:09Speaker 3: lot of people would just say the accuracy and completion
- 24:12Speaker 3: percentage is not necessarily a proxy for accuracy, But in
- 24:16Speaker 3: Breeze's case, I think it was so the high completion percentage,
- 24:18Speaker 3: the fact that he was pinpoint, everything was well timed,
- 24:23Speaker 3: well placed. I think that would be the first thing.
- 24:25Speaker 3: I'll give you the other one. A few years back,
- 24:28Speaker 3: when I was at PFF, we started to chart different
- 24:30Speaker 3: things and tried to say, Okay, where are the quarterback's
- 24:33Speaker 3: eyes at the top of his dropback. Is he looking
- 24:37Speaker 3: to one side of the field and then throwing it there?
- 24:40Speaker 3: Is he starting on one side of the field and
- 24:41Speaker 3: then throwing it to the other side of the field,
- 24:43Speaker 3: in other words, getting to maybe a second or third read.
- 24:46Speaker 3: So we tried to chart that just to see how
- 24:48Speaker 3: quarterbacks operated and to find if there was any information there.
- 24:52Speaker 3: And Breeze, when you would chart him, everyone else would
- 24:55Speaker 3: like get to the top of the drop they'd looked
- 24:57Speaker 3: to the right and then throw it, or they'd look
- 24:59Speaker 3: back to the left. Brees would like break the way
- 25:03Speaker 3: we were trying to calculate this thing because his eyes
- 25:06Speaker 3: were all over the place, and it was like on purpose.
- 25:09Speaker 3: So if he knew he was going to throw to
- 25:11Speaker 3: the right, he would just give a little peak to
- 25:14Speaker 3: the left, he just give a little peak to the
- 25:16Speaker 3: other side of the field just in case. You know,
- 25:18Speaker 3: it felt like, hey, if you know, maybe there's a
- 25:20Speaker 3: busted coverage or maybe there's something I'm missing there. But
- 25:22Speaker 3: he knew where he was going. He would be able
- 25:25Speaker 3: to see the whole field, which most quarterbacks can't do.
- 25:28Speaker 3: You know, they're locked into one side and then they
- 25:29Speaker 3: have to come all the way back to the other.
- 25:31Speaker 3: But he would see the whole field. He would almost
- 25:34Speaker 3: cheat a little bit with his eyes, and it also
- 25:36Speaker 3: keeps defenders off of him. That was a really subtle
- 25:39Speaker 3: thing I thought that Brees did in addition to the
- 25:41Speaker 3: accuracy that helps make him so successful.
- 25:43Speaker 1: I love it. That's cool. Right there, we're talking about
- 25:48Speaker 1: Drew Brees, his eyes, his vision and going through his progressions.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Brought to you by eyecare professionals and doctor Kirk Jeffries
- 25:55Speaker 1: with two locations on Lakeland Drive, the leader in cataract surgery.
- 25:59Speaker 1: All right, did anybody or maybe he was Tad, Was
- 26:03Speaker 1: anybody during this era as good as Breeze going through
- 26:07Speaker 1: his progressions?
- 26:11Speaker 3: I mean, you look at Brady and Manning were obviously
- 26:13Speaker 3: at that at that type of level, but they all
- 26:15Speaker 3: did it differently. You know. I think this is a
- 26:19Speaker 3: good distinction. I think between those three guys. Rogers was
- 26:21Speaker 3: a little bit more physically talented as far as you know,
- 26:25Speaker 3: relied on his arm more than some of those other guys.
- 26:28Speaker 3: But I think Brady, Manning and Breeze were similar in
- 26:30Speaker 3: how they operate, how they got there, but like how
- 26:34Speaker 3: they operated, but how they got there was different.
- 26:36Speaker 1: You know.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Peyton was the line of scrimmage maestro where he's like, hey,
- 26:40Speaker 3: I've got two or three plays, and it was like
- 26:44Speaker 3: playing blackjack with with with Peyton, where it was, hey,
- 26:47Speaker 3: I know the odds that you're going to play too
- 26:49Speaker 3: high or cover two, and because it's sixty percent, I'm
- 26:53Speaker 3: going to get to my too high beater or I'm
- 26:55Speaker 3: going to have a play where if you roll to
- 26:57Speaker 3: single high, I know where the answer is. I think
- 26:59Speaker 3: Breeze did that, you know, the eye manipulation and you
- 27:01Speaker 3: know the quick decide, you know decisions, And I think
- 27:04Speaker 3: Brady was more more see it, confirm it, and then
- 27:09Speaker 3: let it go. So he knew. Brady knew where to go,
- 27:12Speaker 3: but he likes to They liked a lot of option
- 27:14Speaker 3: routes in their offense. He'd liked to say all right,
- 27:16Speaker 3: let me show me where you're going to go, receiver.
- 27:18Speaker 3: Make sure we're on the same page, let me confirm it,
- 27:20Speaker 3: and then I'll zip it in there with accuracy. So
- 27:23Speaker 3: I think they all had that line of scrimmage mastery,
- 27:26Speaker 3: that post snap mastery. They all kind of got there
- 27:29Speaker 3: slightly different ways though, but those those three guys were
- 27:32Speaker 3: in a different league when it came to reading defenses,
- 27:35Speaker 3: knowing what they were doing, and and just always having
- 27:37Speaker 3: an answer to what the defense was through at them.
- 27:40Speaker 1: And then we talk. We're visiting with Steve Palozillo. He
- 27:43Speaker 1: had the NFL Podcast of the Year. He joins us
- 27:45Speaker 1: on the Farm Bureau Insurance guest line as we take
- 27:48Speaker 1: a look at and celebrate Drew Brees's career, brought to
- 27:52Speaker 1: you by Iecare Professionals and doctor Kirk Jeffries on Lakeland
- 27:56Speaker 1: Drive Show What You Know. We talk about Sean and
- 28:03Speaker 1: Drew together when you and your whether it's PFF or now, Steve,
- 28:08Speaker 1: how do y'all factor in whether or not you have
- 28:10Speaker 1: a big time coach during your playing days, Because Sean,
- 28:16Speaker 1: I mean, I think you would agree with this that
- 28:18Speaker 1: Sean is one of the best play callers may not
- 28:21Speaker 1: be the best, and maybe that's Andy Reid whatever, but
- 28:24Speaker 1: Sean's one of the top ten or so play callers
- 28:26Speaker 1: in the last twenty five years in the NFL.
- 28:29Speaker 3: Is that fair, Steve Oh Absolutely, Look, it's NFL analysis
- 28:35Speaker 3: is difficult at times because the quarterback has such a
- 28:38Speaker 3: big impact and you don't get to see coaches with
- 28:41Speaker 3: multiple quarterbacks all that often. You know, Andy Reid had
- 28:43Speaker 3: a lot of success before Patrick Mahomes, and then you
- 28:46Speaker 3: get Mahomes and it just takes it to a new level.
- 28:49Speaker 3: We've talked about Kyle Shanahan of Son. He's had a
- 28:51Speaker 3: lot of different quarterbacks, so you wouldn't say are the
- 28:53Speaker 3: most talented guys, and he gets production out of all
- 28:55Speaker 3: of them. Sean Payton, I think we're just starting to
- 28:57Speaker 3: learn more about how good he is though, because he
- 29:00Speaker 3: easily could have just been a product of Drew Brees.
- 29:02Speaker 3: And I think I'd like to live in a world
- 29:04Speaker 3: where two things can be true. Breeze is the first
- 29:06Speaker 3: ballot Hall of Famer and incredible, but he also was
- 29:08Speaker 3: paired with a great coach and Sean Payton, and they
- 29:10Speaker 3: were going together for a long time, right, And Peyton's
- 29:14Speaker 3: also proving Hey, when Breeze was hurt, he can win
- 29:16Speaker 3: with Teddy Bridgewater or Trevor Simeon or Jamis Winston. And
- 29:20Speaker 3: now he's proving that he can win with bow Knicks
- 29:22Speaker 3: and develop a rookie quarterback, you know, heading into into
- 29:25Speaker 3: year three. So we're learning more about Peyton because you
- 29:29Speaker 3: you know, when you have that many years, you know,
- 29:30Speaker 3: fifteen years with Drew Brees, it's like, well, can he
- 29:33Speaker 3: do it without Breeze as the head coach? And I
- 29:35Speaker 3: think Peyton is showing that he can do that. And then, yeah,
- 29:39Speaker 3: Peyton was was really good. You know, he had his
- 29:42Speaker 3: his things that he leaned into big slot receiver like
- 29:45Speaker 3: Marcus Colston or you know, having a deep threat way
- 29:48Speaker 3: back like a Devaree Henderson or if you know, if
- 29:50Speaker 3: he had Michael Thomas. All right, we're gonna work him
- 29:52Speaker 3: over the middle of the field on short stuff because
- 29:54Speaker 3: his hands and route running are so good. So I
- 29:56Speaker 3: think Peyton was able to adjust to different styles. But
- 29:58Speaker 3: he was really good from a personnel perspective, finding players
- 30:02Speaker 3: that fit into that offense to pair with Breeze, and
- 30:04Speaker 3: I think it was a great combination both guys.
- 30:06Speaker 1: What do you value more now? That you've been doing
- 30:10Speaker 1: this for over a decade with the quarterback. I know
- 30:13Speaker 1: we love guys that can throw the deep ball and
- 30:16Speaker 1: exposive plays change the game and they flip the field.
- 30:19Speaker 1: But if you take a season start to finish step
- 30:24Speaker 1: like all seventeen games, do you value somebody who is
- 30:29Speaker 1: just a surgeon like Breeze, Manning and Brady that are
- 30:34Speaker 1: unbelievable gaming game out in the short and intermediate passing
- 30:38Speaker 1: game over someone who's high level. Some of them can
- 30:42Speaker 1: do it all, but the deep ball, how do you
- 30:45Speaker 1: see it? How do you chart it?
- 30:47Speaker 3: I mean, I think if your elite overall, I mean,
- 30:50Speaker 3: if you an elite is it's not making one throw
- 30:54Speaker 3: or two throws, it's doing it week after week. It
- 30:57Speaker 3: doesn't it doesn't matter how you get there. I don't
- 30:59Speaker 3: think I would say you could make the case that
- 31:03Speaker 3: like a Mahomes or Allen or maybe Lamar who used
- 31:06Speaker 3: their legs as a lot more than Breeze, Brady Manning,
- 31:10Speaker 3: the guys who use their legs might not slump as much.
- 31:13Speaker 3: You know, if they're off throwing the ball, they could
- 31:15Speaker 3: still pick up sixty yards on the ground. Or you know,
- 31:18Speaker 3: you have a keeper scramble, drill, whatever it may be
- 31:21Speaker 3: to keep the defense off balance. You can make that argument,
- 31:23Speaker 3: but I use the phrase all the time back in
- 31:26Speaker 3: the day, how do you attack Tom Brady or how
- 31:29Speaker 3: do you attack Drew Breens, Like what's the game plan?
- 31:32Speaker 3: Because it doesn't matter if you say, well, let's take
- 31:35Speaker 3: away this, well he could do that. You know, you
- 31:38Speaker 3: can't just take away the short stuff. They could zip
- 31:40Speaker 3: it up the scene or throw the ball deep. You
- 31:42Speaker 3: can't just take away the deep stuff and build dink
- 31:44Speaker 3: and donkey to death all the way down the field.
- 31:46Speaker 3: So the best quarterbacks, I think the best offense is
- 31:50Speaker 3: the best quarterbacks just have answers. And I think all
- 31:53Speaker 3: those elite quarterbacks and you could throw Alan Mahomes into
- 31:55Speaker 3: that bucket, they have answers to whatever the defense is
- 31:59Speaker 3: throwing at you. And whether Breeze, Brady Manning did it
- 32:03Speaker 3: stylistically different than a lot of today's quarterbacks, Yeah, that's
- 32:07Speaker 3: that's true. But they'd have plenty of success in today's
- 32:09Speaker 3: NFL just because the guy down run a little bit more.
- 32:12Speaker 3: It would be perfectly fine. You know, they'd have no
- 32:15Speaker 3: problem reading defenses, finding the open man. So once you're
- 32:18Speaker 3: at that level, and you don't have specific weaknesses. It's
- 32:22Speaker 3: so tough to game plan and you just I used
- 32:24Speaker 3: to say, look, how are you going to stop Drew Brees.
- 32:26Speaker 3: You hope he has an off day. You hope he
- 32:28Speaker 3: throws one into coverage. You hope that he misses a
- 32:30Speaker 3: couple throws. There's no specific game plan against those those
- 32:33Speaker 3: high end, elite quarterbacks.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Steve Alzola his show check the Mic, He's had the
- 32:39Speaker 1: NFL podcast of the year. He joins us on the
- 32:41Speaker 1: Out of Bounds Show, brought to you by Icare Professionals
- 32:44Speaker 1: and doctor Kirk Jeffries with two locations on Lakeland. Drove,
- 32:49Speaker 1: all right, let's let's switch gears here, who's the next guy?
- 32:53Speaker 1: Who's the next quarter You mentioned Mahomes and Josh Allen
- 32:57Speaker 1: and those guys that we we've b watched the last
- 32:59Speaker 1: could be some going on almost ten for Steve Palazola.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Who's the next guy, Steve.
- 33:13Speaker 3: I think you have to look at the all the
- 33:15Speaker 3: thirty year quarterbacks. So like I when I look at
- 33:18Speaker 3: the quarterbacks, I got Mahomes, Allen maybe in their own world.
- 33:22Speaker 3: And Mahomes has a big test this year. You know,
- 33:24Speaker 3: if he has another mediocre year production wise, It's like
- 33:27Speaker 3: that's four straight and I know the situation hasn't been
- 33:30Speaker 3: what it was, But maybe he was slightly overrated early
- 33:33Speaker 3: in his career with Tyree Hill and Travis Kelsey both
- 33:36Speaker 3: in their prime. Maybe he's overrated statistically and set this
- 33:40Speaker 3: unrealistic standard. And he's still right, and he's still you know,
- 33:44Speaker 3: got three super Bowls. But Mahomes and Allen Lamar is
- 33:48Speaker 3: gonna do it a little a little bit more consistently.
- 33:49Speaker 3: The hell thing same with Burrow. But I think the
- 33:52Speaker 3: next quarterback you're looking at is you know, Justin Herbert
- 33:56Speaker 3: always has this what if in him. But the two
- 34:00Speaker 3: twenty four draft class of Drake May, Caleb Williams, Jaden Daniels,
- 34:06Speaker 3: I think you could make arguments for any of those
- 34:09Speaker 3: three quarterbacks being the best of that class and or
- 34:13Speaker 3: at least you know, going forward, maybe not to this point.
- 34:16Speaker 3: And then if Broncos fans are listening to you, they'd
- 34:18Speaker 3: start streaming at me that bo Nix is there because
- 34:21Speaker 3: he's got the most wins and the most touchdowns.
- 34:23Speaker 1: I don't think he's there. I mean, I think he's
- 34:25Speaker 1: done a good job, but I don't think he's there. STP.
- 34:29Speaker 3: I'm just telling you, Broncos fans very sensitive because you
- 34:31Speaker 3: could pull. We live in a golden age where you
- 34:33Speaker 3: could find any stat to make your point, no doubt,
- 34:36Speaker 3: and so they'll just say, well, he's got the most
- 34:37Speaker 3: touchdowns passing touchdown to a tim which is not a
- 34:41Speaker 3: good way of doing things. But you know, Drake May
- 34:43Speaker 3: was almost MVP last year in year two, and he
- 34:45Speaker 3: might have even better weapons with aj Brown Romeo Dobbs.
- 34:49Speaker 3: So Drake May has a chance to you know, put
- 34:51Speaker 3: together another high end season and be in that mix
- 34:54Speaker 3: Jade and Daniels maybe had the best season out of
- 34:57Speaker 3: all those guys in his rookie year given the circumstances,
- 35:00Speaker 3: has taken that team to the NFC Championship and took
- 35:03Speaker 3: a little step back last year. It's got to get healthy,
- 35:05Speaker 3: stay healthy. But Jayden Daniels has all the ability in
- 35:09Speaker 3: the world to be a consistent, consistent star. And then
- 35:12Speaker 3: Taylor Williams made great strides last year. You know, throw
- 35:15Speaker 3: for throw might not be as good as those other
- 35:16Speaker 3: guys who'll miss a few too many for my liking,
- 35:19Speaker 3: but man, if he tightens up some of the quote
- 35:21Speaker 3: easy stuff, I mean, he was great last year at
- 35:24Speaker 3: avoiding sacks, the fourth quarter comebacks, the big time throws.
- 35:27Speaker 3: Taylor Bliam's extremely talented and moving in the right direction.
- 35:30Speaker 3: I think you have to look to that draft classes,
- 35:32Speaker 3: you know, having three potential stars in these in the
- 35:35Speaker 3: coming years.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Here, well, all right, let's let's talk Joe Burrow show
- 35:44Speaker 1: he's right there in your backyard. Is he really good
- 35:49Speaker 1: or great?
- 35:51Speaker 2: What?
- 35:52Speaker 3: How do we I think he can he can be great.
- 35:54Speaker 3: I mean, he's his accuracy is incredible and it is
- 35:58Speaker 3: tough to separate him. You know, if I'm gonna say, hey,
- 36:00Speaker 3: Mahomes stats may have been inflated a little bit by
- 36:03Speaker 3: Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelcey. You do have Jamar Chase
- 36:05Speaker 3: and t Higgins. I mean, it's it's so helpful. Obviously.
- 36:11Speaker 3: You do have the thing working against Burrow is over
- 36:15Speaker 3: the last few years, you have Jake Browning coming in
- 36:17Speaker 3: and looking pretty good. You have Joe Flacco almost forty
- 36:20Speaker 3: years old, coming in and looking pretty good with that
- 36:22Speaker 3: offense and making it look different. You know, Burrow plays
- 36:25Speaker 3: a different style. He likes to hold onto the ball,
- 36:27Speaker 3: puts a little more pressure on the offensive line. He's
- 36:29Speaker 3: big play hunting down the field. So I think he's
- 36:32Speaker 3: great and he's been I think, you know, some of
- 36:35Speaker 3: these things have come up because all they're not winning
- 36:36Speaker 3: as many games. It's like, yeah, they're like zero to
- 36:39Speaker 3: four the last two years. When they score thirty three
- 36:42Speaker 3: points or more in a game, you know, they're losing
- 36:44Speaker 3: forty to thirty eight and thirty seven to thirty five.
- 36:47Speaker 3: I mean, they're losing some ridiculous games where the offense
- 36:50Speaker 3: is doing their job and the defense has been one
- 36:52Speaker 3: of the league's worst, if not the worst, over the
- 36:54Speaker 3: last two years. So I think we'll see a better
- 36:56Speaker 3: Borrow this year. You know, I think they'll win a
- 36:57Speaker 3: lot more games. And I think he's squarely in that
- 37:00Speaker 3: top four mix when it comes to the best quarterbacks
- 37:03Speaker 3: in the NFL.
- 37:03Speaker 1: Would you like to see him go the Peyton Manning
- 37:09Speaker 1: Brady route and get the ball out of his hands
- 37:12Speaker 1: quicker the majority of the time, Stee.
- 37:15Speaker 3: I don't know if you saw what he was doing
- 37:17Speaker 3: a flag football game that they were playing earlier in
- 37:20Speaker 3: the summer or late spring, whatever it was, and he's
- 37:23Speaker 3: like juking people in the backfield. He's playing like a
- 37:26Speaker 3: maniac in a flag football game. And it's like, all right,
- 37:28Speaker 3: that's the type of style that he might need to
- 37:31Speaker 3: tighten up a little bit at the NFL level because
- 37:34Speaker 3: he's had the same injury issues Lamar Jackson has had,
- 37:37Speaker 3: and they're weird injuries, you know, a wrist injury, and
- 37:39Speaker 3: you know, just some strange ones here. You know, some
- 37:42Speaker 3: are flukey, but some strange ones in there as well.
- 37:45Speaker 3: So he's got to stay healthy. And if you if
- 37:47Speaker 3: you just you know, five to seven throws a game,
- 37:50Speaker 3: we just get rid of it, get rid of it,
- 37:52Speaker 3: and then you do the big play hunting on third
- 37:54Speaker 3: and long when you really need to, you know. So
- 37:56Speaker 3: I think he's got to learn to pick his spots.
- 37:58Speaker 3: Aaron Rodgers had to deal with this a lot during
- 38:00Speaker 3: his career. He was incredibly mobile, like to play outside
- 38:03Speaker 3: of structure and had to tighten it up just a
- 38:05Speaker 3: little bit and find that balance. So I think that's
- 38:08Speaker 3: that balance is always needed, I think for Borrow. But yeah,
- 38:12Speaker 3: he's gotta he's gotta stay healthy. You gotta gotta stay
- 38:14Speaker 3: on the field.
- 38:15Speaker 1: Yeah, no, no doubt. Steve Plozolo NFL Insadder on the
- 38:19Speaker 1: ATA Bound show one oh five Now of the Zoni ESPN,
- 38:22Speaker 1: he joins us on the Farm Bureau Insurance guest line. Okay, show,
- 38:30Speaker 1: what if Mahomes just has a pretty good you mentioned,
- 38:33Speaker 1: you know, the last three years have been nothing close
- 38:37Speaker 1: to that first chunk of years. What if he just
- 38:41Speaker 1: has a pretty good year this year.
- 38:44Speaker 3: Steve, I think I think it depends on how it happens.
- 38:47Speaker 3: The thing I'll be keeping an eye on. Mahomes has
- 38:49Speaker 3: always been magical at avoiding sacks, avoiding negative plays. We
- 38:56Speaker 3: know that he can do the special stuff and make
- 38:58Speaker 3: special throws and everything, but he hasn't won within structure
- 39:01Speaker 3: as much these last couple of years. And you could say,
- 39:04Speaker 3: well the receivers this or Andy Reid's getting old. I
- 39:06Speaker 3: don't know a lot of Chiefs fans like to make
- 39:08Speaker 3: excuses there, but it hasn't been as good, and his
- 39:11Speaker 3: sack avoidance hasn't been as good, whether it's you know,
- 39:14Speaker 3: not reading coverage or just holding a tick late. His
- 39:17Speaker 3: ability to avoid pressure where he was always a magician,
- 39:21Speaker 3: and maybe he's if he's lost half a step and
- 39:23Speaker 3: now he's coming off the knee injury. I'll be watching
- 39:25Speaker 3: that closely because those are you know, four or five
- 39:28Speaker 3: plays per game that he always made and if you
- 39:31Speaker 3: take those away, then it's like, all right, you know,
- 39:32Speaker 3: he's a you know, he's been like the tenth you know,
- 39:35Speaker 3: eight to tenth most productive quarterback the last few years,
- 39:39Speaker 3: depending on which measures you're using. So if that's four
- 39:42Speaker 3: straight years of that, that's that's something. Now, he always
- 39:44Speaker 3: has had the late game magic and you know, put
- 39:47Speaker 3: the team on his back even when he doesn't have
- 39:49Speaker 3: the best game, very brady like with that. So I
- 39:52Speaker 3: don't know that he'll lose that aspect of his game,
- 39:54Speaker 3: but the consistency and the dominance has taken a step back.
- 39:58Speaker 3: If you have four straight years of that, I think
- 40:00Speaker 3: that's that's alarming, you know, And we'll see how the
- 40:03Speaker 3: the you know, the Chiefs deal with that going forward.
- 40:05Speaker 1: Would would you be shocked if if Joe Burrow had
- 40:10Speaker 1: a better next five year run?
- 40:14Speaker 3: Then no, I know, we talked, we talked a couple
- 40:17Speaker 3: of months back. My biggest story for the next ten
- 40:19Speaker 3: years how do Mahomes, Allen and Lamar Jackson progress into
- 40:24Speaker 3: their thirties. How does their playing style change? Do they
- 40:27Speaker 3: remain healthy? Do they only have five good years a piece?
- 40:30Speaker 3: Can they do it for ten? That last generation did
- 40:33Speaker 3: not have to rely on their legs like this generation does.
- 40:36Speaker 3: How do they change their game? And then Burrow would
- 40:39Speaker 3: be the one that could be most equipped to do that,
- 40:41Speaker 3: and he needs to change his game as well, or
- 40:43Speaker 3: at least, you know, continue to hone it and tighten
- 40:46Speaker 3: it up a little bit. But no, I wouldn't be surprised.
- 40:47Speaker 3: I think Burrow has all the tools and the ability,
- 40:49Speaker 3: and as long as he stays healthy, I think he's
- 40:52Speaker 3: He's right there with all that the Big four.
- 40:54Speaker 1: Okay, and out of the new group, did you mention
- 40:59Speaker 1: Kleb Williams and Jade and Daniels, all those dudes? If
- 41:04Speaker 1: you had to bet a hundred bucks on who's going
- 41:06Speaker 1: to be the dude out of that group over the
- 41:10Speaker 1: next six to eight years, where would if you had
- 41:14Speaker 1: to put some money down today, which direction would you go? Steve?
- 41:19Speaker 3: I would say Drake May. I think May has everything
- 41:22Speaker 3: you need. It was incredible in his second year m
- 41:25Speaker 3: VP candidate. I know he struggled a little bit in
- 41:27Speaker 3: the playoffs, but he was under a lot of pressure.
- 41:30Speaker 3: If he continues to improve May's May's in that mix
- 41:33Speaker 3: for as a top four or five quarterback. I think
- 41:35Speaker 3: I'd take him slightly above Jayden and Daniels and Jayala
- 41:37Speaker 3: Williams coming coming up here.
- 41:40Speaker 1: Okay, this is going to be exciting and we'll do
- 41:47Speaker 1: more because you're going to join us just about every week.
- 41:50Speaker 1: And I've only got about a minute here or so.
- 41:52Speaker 1: That do you do you look at this? Uh, the
- 41:54Speaker 1: AFC and NFC is just wide open this year.
- 41:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I do the especially. I mean, you know, there's
- 42:02Speaker 3: some bad teams in both conferences, but the NFL is
- 42:04Speaker 3: doing a better job of keeping their own players. I
- 42:07Speaker 3: think there's a better roster building effort around the NFL.
- 42:11Speaker 3: And then last year, defenses were incredible, and I think
- 42:13Speaker 3: that leveled the playing field a little bit. It was
- 42:15Speaker 3: more of a defensive league last year than ever, and
- 42:18Speaker 3: I think we'll see another great season that is completely
- 42:20Speaker 3: wide open.
- 42:21Speaker 1: I love it. Hi, buddy, Hey, it was good to
- 42:24Speaker 1: hear your voice again. That means it's football season and
- 42:28Speaker 1: we're looking forward to you hanging out with us. Cool.
- 42:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. We're back. Game was
- 42:33Speaker 3: last night. It's time. Let's do it, dude.

- 42:50Speaker 1: have a great weekend.

- 42:53Speaker 3: need any.
