- 0:10Speaker 1: And we're going to throw it back to you.
- 0:13Speaker 2: By now.
- 0:15Speaker 3: You should have somehow realized what you got to do.
- 0:18Speaker 3: I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do
- 0:23Speaker 3: about you now.
- 0:27Speaker 4: Yes, welcome to the shed. Jonathan Brown joining us on
- 0:31Speaker 4: the shed.
- 0:32Speaker 5: Thanks, boys.
- 0:34Speaker 4: Mate, you inspired the Oasis with the shirt, mate.
- 0:36Speaker 5: That's right.
- 0:37Speaker 2: I went to a concert last year on a Friday
- 0:39Speaker 2: in Melbourne and then went to the race the next day,
- 0:42Speaker 2: Derby Day, and got invited again, so I went twice.
- 0:45Speaker 2: A little bit of a different experience on the Saturday night.
- 0:51Speaker 6: Tired?
- 0:51Speaker 5: Been in the races all day, getting multi up in
- 0:54Speaker 5: the suit, on the mosh pit. Oh, jeez. What might
- 0:59Speaker 5: be funny, if you don't mind me asking?
- 1:02Speaker 6: The moldy paid well paid him instantly odds odds any
- 1:09Speaker 6: odds well do you remember the odds actually the one
- 1:12Speaker 6: was paying well actually he won the corfield and then i.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Think we got yeah the double i think we got
- 1:16Speaker 2: it for about 30 bucks yeah okay so oh between
- 1:18Speaker 2: a few and had a couple of bucks on it
- 1:20Speaker 2: i want to say yeah including a mate of.
- 1:21Speaker 5: Mine who found the ticket he won 30.
- 1:23Speaker 7: Right So I'm going to say north of 500 the
- 1:27Speaker 7: bet would have been at least.
- 1:29Speaker 1: That's a good win.
- 1:30Speaker 5: That's right. Good win. Nice, nice. Actually, not a great win.
- 1:39Speaker 5: Let's talk about the Lions over the weekend.
- 1:41Speaker 1: No, we don't have to.
- 1:42Speaker 4: Now that was unexpected. I mean, I guess is it
- 1:45Speaker 4: good timing that they had their worst game then and
- 1:48Speaker 4: now they've got time to improve?
- 1:50Speaker 5: Well, I hope so. Yeah.
- 1:52Speaker 2: This year, especially, history tells you that, but they need
- 1:55Speaker 2: to kick up the arse every now and again. But
- 1:57Speaker 2: people forget they've been up for such a long time.
- 2:00Speaker 2: It's been an amazing sustained run. New boys have been
- 2:03Speaker 2: in great teams, but they've really been around the top
- 2:06Speaker 2: four mark for the last eight years. It's an incredible run, really,
- 2:09Speaker 2: isn't it? And you know what it's like when teams
- 2:11Speaker 2: are coming at you every week. I feel like they've almost,
- 2:17Speaker 2: when they realise the game's done, they just put the
- 2:20Speaker 2: cue in the rack and go right ahead.
- 2:21Speaker 5: Can't win this one, especially this time of year when
- 2:23Speaker 5: it's match play.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Yeah, rest up the boots for next week, you know.
- 2:25Speaker 2: So that's why you get top four, you get a
- 2:27Speaker 2: second chance. So hopefully they turn it around Saturday night.
- 2:30Speaker 4: You were around for the last three, Pete, and so
- 2:33Speaker 4: nearly a four, Pete. Why bring that up, mate?
- 2:36Speaker 1: Come on.
- 2:39Speaker 4: And we're right on the cusp here. Is there, because it's,
- 2:42Speaker 4: you know, the chance of three in a row, is
- 2:44Speaker 4: there more pressure or is there confidence that comes with that?
- 2:48Speaker 2: I think it's confidence. If they can get over Adelaide
- 2:50Speaker 2: Saturday night, they go to the MCG. I think they're
- 2:53Speaker 2: the best team. Even though they only play there a
- 2:54Speaker 2: couple of times a year, plus finals, they're nearly the
- 2:58Speaker 2: best MCG team. So they go with great confidence. They
- 3:01Speaker 2: play Hawthorne next week. Not to put the cart before
- 3:05Speaker 2: the horse, but they've had a great record against Hawthorne.
- 3:08Speaker 2: So it's a huge game Saturday night at the Gabba.
- 3:10Speaker 2: They just get over that hurdle.
- 3:11Speaker 1: The Crothers weren't that convincing, really. They had a great
- 3:13Speaker 1: last quarter.
- 3:14Speaker 5: They did. I did that game, too. Yeah.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Probably a little bit of luck. The Bulldogs didn't take
- 3:20Speaker 2: the chances, but the Lions will bounce back. They're a
- 3:22Speaker 2: proud group. And Locking Hill, you know, even though he's
- 3:26Speaker 2: probably going to Collingwood next year, you know, he's a competitor.
- 3:30Speaker 5: He's a proud man. He's going to want to do
- 3:32Speaker 5: his best for the club.
- 3:33Speaker 2: And he knows... This is the last time you're going
- 3:35Speaker 2: to get an opportunity in your career to win three
- 3:37Speaker 2: in a row.
- 3:38Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah. And so they'll bounce back. That midfield
- 3:41Speaker 5: group will bounce back.
- 3:41Speaker 2: And they've been bored by Zach Bailey re-signing, which was
- 3:44Speaker 2: big news yesterday.
- 3:45Speaker 5: That's our first win over the Crows.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Because they were saying he was going to go to Adelaide.
- 3:48Speaker 1: He was going to go to the Crows.
- 3:50Speaker 7: Is that now, to your memory, that's the biggest one
- 3:52Speaker 7: in my memory, in the Lions ever had?
- 3:55Speaker 5: Most lucrative, I think.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Most lucrative?
- 3:57Speaker 2: Okay. Yeah, well, Alistair Lynch was the first in our
- 4:01Speaker 2: modern times, I guess, from– Yeah. 93, when he came
- 4:04Speaker 2: to the Brisbane Bears from Fitzroy, he signed a 10-year deal.
- 4:06Speaker 5: Wow. It shows how footy salaries have changed. I think
- 4:10Speaker 5: it was a 10-year, $ 2 million deal, so an average
- 4:13Speaker 5: of 200 grand.
- 4:14Speaker 1: What?
- 4:14Speaker 5: Wow. What about a lot of money back then?
- 4:16Speaker 1: Yeah, true.
- 4:17Speaker 5: Was it probably 93?
- 4:18Speaker 1: Yeah, it would have been cheap by the end of that.
- 4:20Speaker 5: Yeah, well, Buddy Franklin signed a nine-year. Yeah, that's right.
- 4:24Speaker 5: $ 10 million. $ 10 million.
- 4:25Speaker 1: That was 10.
- 4:26Speaker 5: Wow, that was.
- 4:27Speaker 2: I think Bailey signed, it was probably eight by, let's
- 4:31Speaker 2: call it 1.4 million. 8 by 1.4, so the footy
- 4:34Speaker 2: economy's changed, hasn't it?
- 4:36Speaker 5: But the footy club's got to be prudent, don't they?
- 4:39Speaker 2: Because with the spectre of Tassie coming in, they know
- 4:42Speaker 2: some of their other young stars, especially Logan Morris, the
- 4:45Speaker 2: Ganyan forward, will get off it.
- 4:46Speaker 5: Probably upwards of $ 2 million, maybe beyond that. He is
- 4:49Speaker 5: a bloody good player. He's a star.
- 4:52Speaker 4: It's going to be hard for the Lions to hang
- 4:53Speaker 4: on to this team.
- 4:54Speaker 5: Well, I guess.
- 4:55Speaker 2: That's why the NRL and the AFL got salary caps,
- 4:58Speaker 2: haven't they, to try and.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:00Speaker 2: It is ironic, though, that in the modern day of
- 5:03Speaker 2: the salary cap, that both the NRL and AFL have
- 5:06Speaker 2: had these big dynasty teams.
- 5:08Speaker 5: You've seen it at the Panthers, obviously, on that amazing run.
- 5:10Speaker 2: And this century alone, we've had the Brisbane Lions, Geelong, Richmond...
- 5:16Speaker 2: And Hawthorne.
- 5:16Speaker 5: Hawthorne. Yeah. Everyone wins three in a row. Well, three
- 5:19Speaker 5: out of four premierships. That is it. So they've been
- 5:22Speaker 5: able to defy the salary cap for certain reasons.
- 5:25Speaker 4: When you moved up to Brizzy, mate, you were forced
- 5:27Speaker 4: to become a bit of a leaguey as well.
- 5:29Speaker 5: Um, but so, uh, I love the league.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Did you love it before?
- 5:33Speaker 2: Well, the thing is, as a kid growing up in country, Victoria,
- 5:35Speaker 2: the only NRL games we used to get was state
- 5:38Speaker 2: of origin.
- 5:38Speaker 1: So it was a massive, it's not a bad one
- 5:40Speaker 1: to watch.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Back in the days of, you know, when Alfie burst
- 5:44Speaker 2: on the scene, you know, so Queensland were always the
- 5:48Speaker 2: underdog team. So we bagged for Queensland. And, uh, And,
- 5:51Speaker 2: of course, when it came to the MCJ, it was massive.
- 5:54Speaker 2: The boys would punch on. So he led them to
- 5:58Speaker 2: that 3-0 victory, of course.
- 6:01Speaker 5: 1995. 1995, a famous victory. I think it was the
- 6:04Speaker 5: Cattle Dog call and the scrum. Cattle Dog, it was.
- 6:07Speaker 2: It was a few air swings there by the boys.
- 6:10Speaker 2: But that was amazing as kids. And then, of course,
- 6:12Speaker 2: the Melbourne Storm came along and captured the town very quickly.
- 6:15Speaker 2: I captured the statement. They won that flag in 99
- 6:18Speaker 2: with a penalty try.
- 6:19Speaker 7: Yes.
- 6:20Speaker 5: And Craig Smith, I think, had his head taken off.
- 6:22Speaker 5: Was it Craig Smith? Was his name? Anyway. I remember, yeah.
- 6:27Speaker 5: It was Craig someone, I'm pretty sure. You should know.
- 6:30Speaker 1: You debuted not long after that, I thought.
- 6:33Speaker 7: Were you even born then or not?
- 6:36Speaker 5: 99, I was five. So I've been fortunate enough. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:40Speaker 5: Obviously up here following you. Did you ever look at–
- 6:43Speaker 5: Give it a go?
- 6:44Speaker 2: Well, we didn't. It's probably like up here in the days,
- 6:48Speaker 2: it was only footy and cricket.
- 6:50Speaker 5: Sports growing up in the country.
- 6:52Speaker 2: So like up here, it would have been rugby league
- 6:54Speaker 2: and cricket. So my main thing was I wanted to
- 6:56Speaker 2: open the bowl for Australia.
- 6:58Speaker 1: We all did.
- 6:59Speaker 5: We all did. I still do.
- 7:00Speaker 1: I still do.
- 7:01Speaker 5: Yeah, that's right. I still do. I still do. And
- 7:06Speaker 5: open the bowl on a boxing day. That's it.
- 7:09Speaker 1: I'm still waiting for my call-up for a charity game.
- 7:11Speaker 5: Oh, me too.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I'm sick of it.
- 7:13Speaker 3: I want to smack a six at the Gabba or
- 7:17Speaker 3: anywhere just to prove I can do it.
- 7:18Speaker 1: I think I've told you that story before.
- 7:20Speaker 7: So at the end of every preseason, Gordie, well, whoever
- 7:23Speaker 7: the captain was, used to organise a cricket game. And
- 7:25Speaker 7: we were supposed to play at Ashgrove Maris and then
- 7:28Speaker 7: something was on there and Gordie got us on the Gabba.
- 7:31Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 7:31Speaker 7: And he's come out, Gordie's come out, and Matty Hayden's
- 7:35Speaker 7: full kit.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I couldn't fucking get on the.
- 7:41Speaker 5: Gabber, mate.
- 7:43Speaker 1: I know. At the end of our pre-season training, Gordie
- 7:48Speaker 1: got us on the gabber. We played oldies versus youngies.
- 7:50Speaker 1: We had a barbecue being cooked. I remember Dane Carlo
- 7:53Speaker 1: would tink this massive six, and everyone went crazy.
- 7:55Speaker 5: I still want to do it though.
- 7:56Speaker 1: I'm still waiting to show them my skills just to
- 7:59Speaker 1: get the call up. I'm only 32 this year. Your
- 8:00Speaker 1: back would be, you'd be, oh! No. You carried on
- 8:04Speaker 1: playing league, playing cricket. Mate, I just chirp. I sit
- 8:08Speaker 1: in there and chirp. And I just go, yep, that's
- 8:10Speaker 1: the whole point.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Yeah, he's, well, my greatest thrill ever was, I used
- 8:16Speaker 2: to do the footy show, but the AFL footy show
- 8:18Speaker 2: back in the day, like you boys at the NRL
- 8:19Speaker 2: and Ricky Ponting was on once and I was a
- 8:22Speaker 2: panelist that night and the boys asked me, knowing how
- 8:24Speaker 2: much I love him, they said, do you want to
- 8:26Speaker 2: bowl to Ricky Ponting coming out of one of the
- 8:28Speaker 2: ad books?
- 8:28Speaker 5: So taped up tennis ball, yes.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Then you go to Street Studios in Melbourne and Channel 9,
- 8:35Speaker 2: got to bowl to the current Australian.
- 8:37Speaker 5: Test captain, Ricky Ponting, got 14 yards too. Fully taped
- 8:42Speaker 5: up tennis ball. None of these half taped up tennis balls.
- 8:44Speaker 5: I just wanted to hit punter. I remember walking.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Out during the ad break and punter said, you just
- 8:49Speaker 2: put it in a nice half volleyball.
- 8:50Speaker 5: I said, yeah, sure, punter. Punter.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Well, I already teamed up with the Lighty to make
- 8:55Speaker 2: sure this big bright light right behind the bowler's.
- 8:57Speaker 5: Arm just to switch on as I was coming in.
- 9:00Speaker 2: With a light taped up tennis ball, and he just
- 9:02Speaker 2: switched on just so I'm about to let the ball go.
- 9:04Speaker 5: Your partner clearly couldn't see the ball, mate. I've hit
- 9:07Speaker 5: him in the shoulder, landed on the stump, so that's
- 9:10Speaker 5: my great.
- 9:10Speaker 1: That is all the best. You bowled Ricky Ponting. Yeah.
- 9:14Speaker 5: A little bit out of it, but it's still good.
- 9:16Speaker 1: What a highlight.
- 9:18Speaker 5: Yeah. In fact, it was off 14 yards.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:21Speaker 5: But, yeah, great growing up.
- 9:22Speaker 4: Now, this is just the bonus episode, so we won't
- 9:24Speaker 4: fire all our bullets, but we'll come back and we
- 9:26Speaker 4: want to talk to you about your health as well
- 9:27Speaker 4: because you had a bit of a scare this year,
- 9:28Speaker 4: so we'll get to that in the episode proper when
- 9:31Speaker 4: that drops tomorrow.
- 9:32Speaker 6: All right.
