Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's get reaction out of Trump's pace plan with the
- 0:02Speaker 1: three to four day deadline for Hamas. It includes an
- 0:04Speaker 1: immediate sea spot followed by the disarmament of Hamas and
- 0:08Speaker 1: in Israeli withdrawal. Linda Gradstein is CBS News correspondent in Jerusalem. Linda,
- 0:13Speaker 1: what's the reaction been or what do we expect the
- 0:15Speaker 1: reaction might be from Hamas well?
- 0:19Speaker 2: It's really hard to tell. The sort of reports are
- 0:24Speaker 2: that Hamas is tending towards accepting the deal. They're under
- 0:29Speaker 2: a lot of pressure from Kuttar, the Palestinians living in Gaza.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I have a friend who lives in Gaza and has
- 0:36Speaker 2: been displaced numerous times and is barely, you know, having
- 0:41Speaker 2: such a and she's been having such a hard time,
- 0:43Speaker 2: and she wrote me and said, I hate all the
- 0:45Speaker 2: Palestinian organizations. I'm sick of all of So I think
- 0:49Speaker 2: there is a sense that the population in Gaza certainly
- 0:52Speaker 2: wants the word to end, wants the bombing to end,
- 0:55Speaker 2: wants to begin to rebuild some semblance of life in Gaza.
- 1:00Speaker 2: But at the same time, it's basically Hamas giving in
- 1:04Speaker 2: by saying that it will have no role in any
- 1:07Speaker 2: future government of Gaza, that the area will be demilitized,
- 1:12Speaker 2: that Hamas will hand over its guns. So all of
- 1:15Speaker 2: those are things that I think are very difficult for
- 1:17Speaker 2: Hamas will accept.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Do the people in Gaza want Hamas gone too?
- 1:25Speaker 2: Well, First of all, you know, it's hard to tell
- 1:27Speaker 2: because people are afraid to speak out against Hamas, And
- 1:31Speaker 2: if you do write anything online on social media against Hamas,
- 1:36Speaker 2: you will have somebody showing up at your home and
- 1:40Speaker 2: threatening you. So people are afraid to speak against Hamas.
- 1:43Speaker 2: But I think there is a feeling that Hamas. You know,
- 1:47Speaker 2: Hamas was originally elected in two thousand and six, and
- 1:50Speaker 2: it was more as a sort of a reaction to
- 1:54Speaker 2: the corruption of the Palestinian authority, and the idea was
- 1:57Speaker 2: that the people of Hamas, because they were observant Muslims,
- 2:01Speaker 2: that they were not corrupt. But I think people really
- 2:04Speaker 2: there are people's lives, you know, there's not people are hungry,
- 2:08Speaker 2: there's enough food, there's no semblance of a normal life
- 2:12Speaker 2: in Gaza. People are living intense people have been displaced
- 2:16Speaker 2: numerous times. Many kids haven't gone to school in two years.
- 2:20Speaker 2: So I think they're against anything that stopped from which.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Cases London Gradstein, who's the CBS News Radio correspondent in Jerusalem.
