Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle talk Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host Brian self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Hey, quick insert right before today's episode.
- 0:18This is a much longer episode than normal.
- 0:23The topic that I go over today in second Timothy chapter 2
- 0:27verses 11 through 15 is something that has been used and
- 0:32abused and ignored and all sorts of stuff.
- 0:34So this is going to be a longer episode.
- 0:37And so just want to let you know right at the beginning, if
- 0:40you're like, listen, I only need I only have 20 minutes this
- 0:42morning that I encourage you maybe go over and listen to Tim
- 0:48Wildsmith's episode as he is walking through scripture every
- 0:52single day. He's doing the Bible in a year.
- 0:54I'm listening to that every single day.
- 0:56And so if you only have like 15 minutes or so, go over and
- 1:00listen to that episode today. But without further ado, here is
- 1:04the longest Tabernacle Talk episode ever on Second Timothy
- 1:08chapter 2, verses 11 through 15. Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk
- 1:12and we have got a doozy of an episode today.
- 1:15I am excited for this week of Tabernacle Talk episodes
- 1:20beginning with today. We are in first Timothy chapter
- 1:242 and we're going to be looking at verses 11 through 15 today.
- 1:29Now, as we started off at the beginning of First Timothy
- 1:32chapter 2, we were instructed to be praying for those that are in
- 1:37positions of leadership in our government so that as they make
- 1:41good decisions and as they, if you will, as they do not
- 1:46persecute or harm or make life difficult for Christians, that
- 1:51then the Christians are going to be able to flourish to
- 1:54evangelize others. And so that's the first
- 1:57instruction that is given. It is that we are praying so
- 2:01that we would be treated well, so that evangelism is made
- 2:04easier then in a verse #8 and I'm going to read here through
- 2:09verse 15 so we can get the full picture of what Paul has for us
- 2:14here. He says, therefore, because of
- 2:15this, because of the gospel message, evangelism that is
- 2:19preached with a view to the outside world, he says, I want
- 2:23the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands without
- 2:28anger or argument. This is a way to not be angry
- 2:33and arguing and a way to be to be praying everywhere, he says.
- 2:38Also, the women are to dress themselves in modest clothing as
- 2:42opposed to expensive, lavish, gaudy clothing, he says.
- 2:47They are to dress themselves with decency and good sense, not
- 2:51with elaborate hairstyles, gold, pearls or expensive apparel, but
- 2:57with good works, as is proper for women who profess to worship
- 3:01God. Don't let people look at you and
- 3:03go, man. She's got, you know, the
- 3:06Balenciaga shades and the Versace dress and this and that.
- 3:11Don't let your dress be something that's ostentatious
- 3:15with the kind of an older word for it.
- 3:18Don't let your dress be ostentatious.
- 3:20Don't let that be what draws attention to you.
- 3:22Let your good works, the way that you treat other people,
- 3:26your kindness, your speech. Let that be what people take
- 3:32note of in your life. Because this is what for people
- 3:36that worship God, this is what should typify them.
- 3:40So we have these things. Don't do this, but do this
- 3:42instead. Verse #11 A woman is to learn
- 3:47quietly with full submission. I do not allow a woman to teach
- 3:51or to have authority over a man. Instead she is to remain quiet.
- 3:56For Adam was formed first, then Eve, and Adam was not deceived,
- 4:02but the woman was deceived and transgressed.
- 4:05But she will be saved through childbearing if they continue in
- 4:09faith, love, and holiness with good sense.
- 4:15So here there is a pairing. Verse #8 has.
- 4:19Here's what the men are supposed to do and what they aren't
- 4:22supposed to do. Verses 9 and 10 have, well, I'll
- 4:27say 9 through 15 have. Here's what the women are to do
- 4:32and here's what they are not to do.
- 4:34So there is to be a good works that we are clothing.
- 4:38I this goes for everyone. Everyone should clothe
- 4:41themselves with good works and not with ostentatious clothing.
- 4:44But here for the church at Ephesus, as Paul is writing to
- 4:48Timothy, as he is helping to guide a church that had lost its
- 4:53way with false teachers, Paul says Timothy, here's what the
- 4:57men and the women need to know. Here's what they need to do, and
- 5:00here's what they need to not be doing.
- 5:02And verses 11 and 12 actually give us a here's what they
- 5:08should do and here's what they should not do as it pertains to
- 5:13women and the teaching ministries of the local church.
- 5:19Now 2000 years removed from Ephesus, we would read verse 11
- 5:26and we can bring in a lot of cultural baggage into this
- 5:31verse. It says a woman is to learn
- 5:33quietly with full submission. If I were to perhaps just get up
- 5:40on a Sunday morning and say, hey, listen, you know, I, I've
- 5:45got lots of my friends that are out there in the congregation
- 5:49each week. And I say, all right, Mary and
- 5:52Shelley and Teresa and Joan and Laura and lots of, you know,
- 5:57others of my friends. Sherry, listen, I want you to
- 6:02learn quietly with full submission, my congregation
- 6:07would receive that word from me in this cultural moment in a
- 6:11very different way than this congregation would have received
- 6:16this word. What do you mean by that, Brian?
- 6:20There was especially in the time period between when the Old
- 6:26Testament was completed and when the New Testament began, there
- 6:31were a lot of the rabbi's, the teachers of the Old Testament
- 6:35that had really, I'll phrase it this way, they had really toxic.
- 6:41They had some really, really bad ways in which they thought about
- 6:47women. They actually said it would be
- 6:50better for the Torah, the the Old Testament.
- 6:54It would be better for the Torah to be burned than for it to be
- 6:57taught to a woman. There was so many like you can
- 7:02read through. I believe the Mishnah is the
- 7:06title of the collection of written materials of the rabbi's
- 7:10from about 300 BC to 280. I believe is about that time
- 7:18period. The Mishnah was here's all of
- 7:21these rabbis thoughts about the Old Testament and so you can
- 7:27read through those and you will find some things that are just
- 7:32very derogatory towards women specifically things that would
- 7:36never be said in the Old Testament or in the New
- 7:40Testament and it would go against what Scripture tells us.
- 7:45So to a group of people that would have from the worship of
- 7:53Yahweh, from the Old Testament scriptures that would have heard
- 7:57from the Rabbi's, the women cannot learn the word of God.
- 8:02Paul tells the women that they ought to learn the word of God.
- 8:09And what a joy that that would be for those like Timothy from a
- 8:14Jewish background. And you remember Timothy learned
- 8:17his faith as we read together in Second Timothy 1.
- 8:21He learned his faith from his grandmother and from his mom.
- 8:26So this is not a indication of a lack of importance on women.
- 8:33This is not any sort of indication on a, if you will,
- 8:38subservience due to inferiority of women.
- 8:43So verse #11 a woman is to learn quietly with full submission,
- 8:49contrary to the rabbi's, contrary even to what Paul would
- 8:53have heard from people during his training as a Pharisee.
- 8:58He says Jesus included women in his group of people that he was
- 9:03traveling with. We know obviously about the 12
- 9:06disciples, and then we know about the kind of larger group
- 9:09of 70 that often accompanied him.
- 9:12But then you can think about the women that traveled with him,
- 9:15Mary Magdalene, Salome, his mother and many others that you
- 9:20can read their names and some of what they did in the Gospels.
- 9:25So Paul says, Contra Judaism at this point in time, that the
- 9:30women were to learn. They didn't have to have as in
- 9:34the Tabernacle and the temple. They did not have to have their
- 9:38own separate court or section that they were in that then the
- 9:43men got to be in their own court and they got to hear the the
- 9:48Torah taught, but the women would never get to hear that
- 9:53Paul says no, what what was happening in Judaism is not
- 9:58here. What is going to happen in the
- 10:00Christian Church. So they are to learn this is a
- 10:04good thing not a bad thing. Now he says here a woman is to
- 10:08learn quietly with full submission.
- 10:12Now because of the misuse of verses and authority things over
- 10:22the last several 100 years, some people would view this as wow,
- 10:27OK, well I guess the men can learn loudly and defiantly.
- 10:32No, this is saying by the same general rules As for anyone that
- 10:37is learning from someone else, and especially anyone that would
- 10:41be learning from the Word of God and from their elders, from
- 10:45their pastors, which we're going to be going over next episode.
- 10:49By the way. This is intimately tied together
- 10:53with the formal teaching ministry and oversight of a
- 10:58local church. It's tied together.
- 11:00So I, I, I'll say more about that either this episode or next
- 11:05episode. So he says, I want the women to
- 11:08learn quietly with full submission.
- 11:12I'm looking up this word quietly.
- 11:17This is with quietness. Sometimes this can be with
- 11:22silence. This is not someone that is
- 11:26causing a ruckus. This isn't someone that is loud.
- 11:30This is someone that is unobtrusive, undisturbed, making
- 11:35little noise, restrained. These are all of the things that
- 11:39I want for every person to follow at Tabernacle.
- 11:44I don't want anyone that learns in a defiance, in a rude, in a
- 11:52obstructive manner. This is I want you to learn and
- 11:57I want you to learn recognizing that God has things for you.
- 12:01And so if you will don't be talking over other people.
- 12:07There are very unfortunately, especially at this time in
- 12:10Ephesus, there were various goddess cults in which women
- 12:15were viewed as superior to the men that they would say the
- 12:21whole world and humanity came from a mother.
- 12:27And so as a result, women have this incredible place of worth
- 12:34and supremacy over any men. And some of that goddess worship
- 12:41and the cult practices and teachings that they would have
- 12:45would even say you need as a woman to call on these idols,
- 12:52these goddesses, so that you will not miscarry your children
- 12:58and so that you will not die in childbirth.
- 13:03These were things that were all being taught.
- 13:05And so in Ephesus, you have people that are, you know, I'll,
- 13:10I'll phrase it this way. They are good at Torah,
- 13:12following Jewish people. And you also have people that
- 13:17were once a part of a cultic and Pagan worship.
- 13:22And so here Paul says, OK, ignoring what the rabbis taught
- 13:27about the place of women, the women are to learn.
- 13:30And when they come and they learn, they're not to be
- 13:34behaving or they're not to be teaching like these priestesses
- 13:39of these Pagan goddesses. They're not to be that either.
- 13:43So it's, if you will, it's doing a, I'll not say balancing act in
- 13:49the sense of, OK, there's some good in both.
- 13:52No, he's saying this over here with the rabbi's is wrong.
- 13:55And this over here with the Pagan priestesses.
- 13:59That is also wrong. But women have a place and they
- 14:03are called into the worship of God and they are fellow citizens
- 14:07and fellow heirs with men. So then in verse #12 as verse
- 14:1411, I would contend the main objection is to the way that the
- 14:19rabbi's were influencing what was happening in the church.
- 14:23You can even think back to the beginning of First Timothy 1
- 14:27where Paul tells Timothy, some of these people, they are
- 14:29wanting to teach the Old Testament law, but they don't
- 14:33know like what it's for. They're going into miss Fables,
- 14:38endless genealogies, speculations.
- 14:41That's not the point. Like Jesus is the point.
- 14:44And we follow God with a pure heart and a good conscience and
- 14:48sincere faith. So there's that aspect where you
- 14:53had people influenced by Judaism and then for the people
- 14:55influenced by Pagan worship. Paul says, verse #12.
- 15:00He says, I do not allow a woman to teach or to have authority
- 15:05over a man. Instead, she is to remain quiet.
- 15:11There has been probably 3 different ways that people have
- 15:15taken this verse. One, one way that people have
- 15:20taken is this verse that I solidly reject and I will tell
- 15:25you guys this would be unbiblical would be to say Paul
- 15:29here is being sexist, but Jesus wasn't sexist.
- 15:32And so I can ignore this. And so this means nothing to me.
- 15:40That is absolutely the wrong mindset to have any time we
- 15:44encounter scripture growing up, you know, predominantly, you
- 15:49know, I was three years old when Y2K happened for those that live
- 15:54through that time period. So I have grown up in the 21st
- 15:59century. And so hearing or reading things
- 16:03like this is only something that I ever encounter when I am in a,
- 16:11if you want to call it this, a religious circle.
- 16:14There is something ancient about what is being said here.
- 16:22But can I also tell you, the last hundred, 150 years would
- 16:26show us that a rejection of all of God's standards of gender and
- 16:33sexuality have not made those aspects of our society
- 16:39predominantly better. It has made our society worse.
- 16:44And I mean that specifically, not in a listen.
- 16:47We gave women the right to vote. Now look at the world.
- 16:49No, absolutely abhor any thoughts or things like that
- 16:53that that I occasionally hear from, you know, random
- 16:57podcasters and things on the Internet or even some purported
- 17:02pastors that just have a very misogynistic view of the world.
- 17:08What I am saying here is that God has a way for our lives, for
- 17:13our homes, and for our churches to operate, and we disregard the
- 17:19Word of God at peril to our souls and to our families and to
- 17:26our churches. So I don't ever want to come to
- 17:29any portion of Scripture and say this is not for me.
- 17:33This is written to a New Testament church.
- 17:36I am a part of a church in the New Testament age.
- 17:39And so therefore this has some import and some meaning for me.
- 17:44So first way to take verse 12 is all right, Paul's just being
- 17:48sexist. And so I'm going to ignore
- 17:49everything. The second way that people have
- 17:54taken this, which I would say would probably be the majority
- 17:58view up until the 1800s or so would be that women are
- 18:06prohibited as a results, as we read in verses 13 and 14, like
- 18:11by creation order that women are not ever called to the office of
- 18:19pastor, elder, Bishop, overseer, whatever title you want to give
- 18:24that that leader within the local church.
- 18:30Women are never called to that role.
- 18:32Instead, God has reserved that for men and you might say, well,
- 18:35what in the world would make them quote, UN quote, deserving
- 18:40of that role? And the answer would be simply
- 18:44the choice of God to utilize men within that role.
- 18:48Or as we'll see next episode, the picture of a father within a
- 18:55family is the picture of a pastor with a church, which
- 19:00seems personally, which seems funny to me as I am the youngest
- 19:06male member at Tabernacle. But in one sense, I am a
- 19:10spiritual father to those within our church.
- 19:15And so it is not due to perhaps like greater mental acuity of
- 19:22the men or the emotional nature of the women as very
- 19:27unfortunately, I I've seen people write about many times
- 19:30before. The perhaps best illustration
- 19:34that I can give of because people would certainly say, well
- 19:40this seems unfair that men could be pastors or men could be
- 19:45elders and women cannot be elders.
- 19:48Like why? Why would this be?
- 19:51And a verse that's often quoted as Galatians 3 In Christ there
- 19:55is no male or female bond or slave, Jew or Gentile, but we
- 20:00have all been made one in Christ Jesus.
- 20:04And we would recognize at the foot of the cross, none of the
- 20:08human metrics by which we evaluate one another.
- 20:12None of our differences make any difference at the foot of the
- 20:15cross. That whether you're young or
- 20:17old, no matter your ethnicity, no matter your gender in front
- 20:22of Jesus. And when it comes to the Kingdom
- 20:25of God, when it comes to our life with him, our gender does
- 20:29not matter one iota. But within families, we would
- 20:33certainly believe that there is such a distinction as male and
- 20:37female. We would believe that a man
- 20:40should marry a woman. And that is what makes up a
- 20:44family. And so let me rethink about
- 20:51where I was. So gender does matter.
- 20:54It does not matter for our salvation or rock with God or
- 20:58worth. And so why would gender play any
- 21:01role whatsoever in who is and who is not an elder or a pastor
- 21:06of a church? And one of the greatest kind of
- 21:11illustrations or biblical examples that I can give of this
- 21:15is when you have the 12 tribes of Israel, it kind of sort of
- 21:20got bumped up to 13 for a reason that I'm going to mention here
- 21:23in a SEC. So you have these 13 tribes of
- 21:27Israel. Only one tribe was chosen to be
- 21:31the priestly tribe. Like one tribe was the one that
- 21:35would devote all of their time and attention to 1st the
- 21:40Tabernacle and then the Temple. That they taught God's word,
- 21:45that they were given the purpose of preparing the sacrifices,
- 21:51putting those on, teaching people the Torah.
- 21:56All of that happened, and only one of the 13 tribes was given
- 22:01that responsibility. And one could say, well, what
- 22:03would make the tribe of Levi any more worthy than the tribe of
- 22:07Benjamin? You know, you'd say Levi was the
- 22:12second. He's either the second or third
- 22:15born of Jacob. And you know, Judah is the
- 22:21fourth born son of Jacob. And that's the kingly tribe that
- 22:25David and his line came from. So why in the world would Levi
- 22:30be the one? And we have to come back to the
- 22:33fact that God chooses to do what he wants to do.
- 22:38And just like someone from the tribe of Benjamin could say,
- 22:43well, man, I, I just, I wish that I was a leave it a Levi.
- 22:48I wish that I was a priest. I wish I could offer the
- 22:51sacrifices there in the temple that would then not make that a
- 22:57person from Benjamin worthy. I I say that worthy, it would
- 23:03not make him chosen by God to accomplish that purpose.
- 23:06We can even see this in the book of I believe it's second kings,
- 23:10if I recall correctly, where you have one of the kings of Judah.
- 23:15So this is a person that has been selected by God to rule
- 23:19over God's people, Israel, but he offers a sacrifice in the
- 23:26temple. And as a result of that, for
- 23:29anyone that really knows this story well, it may have been
- 23:32that he offered incense, as I'm recalling.
- 23:35I think that might be more correct.
- 23:36And so don't angrily be like, listen, Brian doesn't know
- 23:39anything he's talking about. I promise I remember the story.
- 23:42There's just a lot of stories in there.
- 23:44So King Uzziah, I believe, is his name and King Uzziah, he
- 23:49offers incense, which is only something that the priests and
- 23:52Levites were able to do. Now you would say, all right,
- 23:55well, he's he's the king, so he should be afforded to do a lot
- 23:59of the things that he wants to do.
- 24:01And he's from the tribe of Judah.
- 24:04And, you know, his family lineage was the one that Jesus
- 24:07was going to come from. And so if anyone should be able
- 24:11to just offer some incense, you know, put some smell good stuff
- 24:15before the Lord, shouldn't this guy be be able to do it because
- 24:19he wants to do it? And the answer that God gave was
- 24:23absolutely not. And Uzziah was struck with
- 24:26leprosy as a result of his ignoring what God had said about
- 24:31who was authorized to be the priest and who was authorized to
- 24:37offer incense. In the same way, God has it so
- 24:42that only men and only qualified men, which is what we're going
- 24:47to look at next episode, have the responsibility and have the
- 24:55privilege to be elders or pastors of a local church.
- 24:59And that is not something that anyone can take onto themselves.
- 25:06It doesn't matter if a person goes well, I just want to be a
- 25:08pastor. And since I'm a guy, I'm going
- 25:10to be a pastor. No, as I read, oh, I don't know
- 25:16how many episodes, this was ago now.
- 25:20God is the one that calls people to pastor in a church and God is
- 25:27the one that threw the moving of that church's leadership and
- 25:31threw that congregation that any pastors or elders are raised up
- 25:39for that body of believers. And there's always in the best
- 25:46of circumstances, there is always an evaluation of that
- 25:49individual as to their walk with the Lord, their relationship
- 25:52with other people, their testimony towards the outside
- 25:56world. All of that is in view when
- 26:00someone is when a man is evaluated for the office of a
- 26:05pastor. And so Paul's going to go over
- 26:08that in detail in chapter 3 and verses one through 7.
- 26:12So back to verse #12 here. So that's kind of our big
- 26:15picture. Let's zoom back.
- 26:16And he says, I do not allow a woman to teach or to have
- 26:19authority over a man here. This word have authority.
- 26:23This is the only time that this word is used in the New
- 26:28Testament and it is a pretty rare word in in Koine Greek,
- 26:34which is the type of Greek that was spoken back 2000 years ago.
- 26:39I actually personally prefer the way that the King James Version
- 26:44translates this verse where he says I do not allow a woman to
- 26:48teach or to usurp authority over a man.
- 26:52This word, if I have my pronunciation correctly, it's
- 26:55often Tain. It is to dominate someone else.
- 26:59It is to exercise independent control or ability.
- 27:05This is someone that says I am not subject to the elders or I'm
- 27:09not subject to the pastor. I do what I want to do.
- 27:13I say what I want to say. I will teach whatever I want to
- 27:18teach regardless of what these authority figures are saying.
- 27:26So from this we we can deduce a few things, especially taking in
- 27:33some other things. From the New Testament we know
- 27:35that God called some women to be prophetesses, that they would
- 27:40declare what God had said. One of the first deacons in the
- 27:45church at Jerusalem, Philip, had four daughters that were
- 27:49prophetesses that God had given them this ability to say what
- 27:55God had said. Or we would read in First
- 27:57Corinthians 11 that the women are not supposed to prophecy or
- 28:02pray in church in that particular context without a
- 28:07head covering. Now, that is far beyond the
- 28:11scope of what we're talking about today.
- 28:13Let me just summarize that part of First Corinthians 11 by
- 28:19saying this. There were ways that false
- 28:23priests, sorry, false priestesses and prostitutes
- 28:27would dress and how they would interact like with their hair
- 28:32and all that kind of stuff in Corinth.
- 28:36And Paul encourages the Christian believers don't look
- 28:41like false worship. And even the prostitutes there
- 28:44in Corinth, we're so often tied in with the worship of these
- 28:50false goddesses. And so Paul says don't look like
- 28:53them when you are doing the things that you're supposed to
- 28:56be doing as the church. So we know that God had purposes
- 29:04for women to be speaking into the lives of others to care for
- 29:08one another. In Titus two, we would read that
- 29:11the older women in the faith, if you will, the mature in their
- 29:15faith. Women are supposed to be
- 29:17teaching those women that are new to the faith or younger or
- 29:21immature in their faith. We would also read in Second
- 29:25Timothy, one that Timothy, a man, had learned his faith from
- 29:29his grandmother and from his mother.
- 29:31So there is a place and time and purpose for women to teach
- 29:36others. You can even think about not
- 29:40Ananias and Sapphira, it's the other one, Priscilla and Aquila.
- 29:44So Priscilla is the name of a woman.
- 29:46Aquila is the name of her husband.
- 29:50And they were a couple that Paul met in Corinth.
- 29:55They were a Jewish couple that had come to faith in Jesus.
- 29:58And there was a tremendous Jewish speaker and orator named
- 30:03Apollos that had come to Corinth.
- 30:06And he was telling the people about, you know, John's baptism
- 30:09and everything that John had said because he didn't know
- 30:11about Jesus yet. He'd only heard about John the
- 30:14Baptist message. And so Priscilla and Aquila,
- 30:19they brought Apollos into their home and they taught him the way
- 30:23of Jesus. And then Apollos actually became
- 30:26a tremendous leader in the early church and especially there in
- 30:31that church at Corinth. So there is a place for women to
- 30:36teach. Paul sent the letter to the
- 30:39Roman churches by the hand of a gal named.
- 30:44Actually, I'm going to have to pull out my Bible and I
- 30:46apologize because there are two women that are named in Roman 16
- 30:49and I want to make sure I don't mention the wrong name.
- 30:52One of these is Junia and the other gal who is named Phoebe,
- 31:01and she's described as a servant, A diakonon, A Deacon,
- 31:06sent out servant with a purpose from the church at Centria.
- 31:11And so Paul sent the letter to the Romans with Phoebe, this
- 31:15messenger from Centria. And so she would have been the
- 31:18first one to read the letter to the Romans, to these different
- 31:24Roman churches. Many of the people, especially
- 31:27if they were slaves, would not have been literate.
- 31:32And so she would be the one that would first read what Paul had
- 31:36written. So here, as Paul says, I don't
- 31:39allow a woman to teach or to have to usurp authority or to
- 31:44dominate over a man. Instead, she is to remain quiet.
- 31:47Here is not an indication that women should just shut up and
- 31:51let men do all the talking. God has plenty of places and
- 31:55roles and families that he wants you to communicate the gospel to
- 32:01other people. Your, your Facebook page, you're
- 32:03not just supposed to remain quiet because you're a woman.
- 32:05You ought to, if you will say what God has said, post those
- 32:10Bible verses, share, you know, those good godly reels or shorts
- 32:15or Tik Toks or whatever platform that you are on and allow people
- 32:21to be able to hear God's word model through the way that
- 32:25you're living in the way that you instruct your, your kids or
- 32:30your grandkids or your neighborhood kids, like lead
- 32:35them in the right way. When there is times of perhaps
- 32:40like community learning and, and Sunday school or or small
- 32:44groups, when, when questions are being asked and there is a need
- 32:50for people to, there is a request for people to have
- 32:53input. Give your input.
- 32:55The Holy Spirit lives in you and you have the word of God.
- 32:58And so you are able to declare this as well.
- 33:02But be careful. There can be for men as well As
- 33:05for women, there can be a tendency to dominate, to usurp,
- 33:11to say I know better than these men.
- 33:16I know better than everyone else in this room.
- 33:19Let us all operate in humility and in submission.
- 33:25So if you have any more questions, please, like ask.
- 33:31Given the very volatile nature of this topic, I encourage you
- 33:36like shoot me a text to call, a direct message, you know, shoot
- 33:41me an e-mail. My e-mail is
- 33:43pastor@tbces.sex.com, pastor at tbces.sex.com.
- 33:48I would love to have more conversations about what this
- 33:52means and its effects on how we do church.
- 33:58So I just want to be faithful to believe what God's word says
- 34:02here while also recognizing this is not the only verse about
- 34:05women and and the rest of Christians even within the New
- 34:10Testament. So here Paul says, I do not have
- 34:15a woman occupying this role of the teacher, one of the elders,
- 34:19the overseers over a church. I don't let them dominate over
- 34:24men. Instead she is to remain quiet.
- 34:27It's unobstructive the way that all people listening to
- 34:31preaching should be. And then he says in verses 13
- 34:34and 14, for Adam was formed first, then Eve.
- 34:37So again, this is contrary to the Pagan teachings and their
- 34:41goddesses. He says Adam was first formed
- 34:44and then Eve. If you will, the old joke, what
- 34:46came first, the chicken or the egg?
- 34:48Here the the rooster came first. Adam was formed first, then Eve.
- 34:53He says an Adam was not deceived, but the woman was
- 34:57deceived and transgressed here. This word deceived the second
- 35:02time it's used here the woman was deceived is actually more
- 35:05emphatic than the first one. So Adam wasn't tricked into
- 35:09eating the fruit, Eve was tricked into eating the fruit.
- 35:14The word here would actually mean like to be completely
- 35:18deceived. Adam was not deceived, he just
- 35:22willfully rebelled. He said I am the one that heard
- 35:27the instruction from God and yet because here my wife is giving
- 35:32me the fruit, it doesn't say that Adam saw, Oh yeah, this
- 35:35fruit is good. It'll make me wise.
- 35:37It literally just says his wife gave to him and he ate.
- 35:41So Adam willfully transgressed and Eve was deceived.
- 35:48But then verse #15 a very weird verse if you don't remember the
- 35:53like Pagan goddess environment that they would have been in in
- 35:57Ephesus, it says. But she will be saved through
- 36:00childbearing if they continue in faith, love and holiness with
- 36:06good sense. Here, this is not a if you're a
- 36:08woman, here's how to be saved, have kids and have faith, love
- 36:13and holiness and good sense and you can be saved and the men can
- 36:16be saved through faith in Jesus. No, here.
- 36:19This is Contra the claims of the Pagan priestesses that would say
- 36:24you need to offer sacrifices or you need to worship or
- 36:28acknowledge this false goddess in order for you to not miscarry
- 36:34or in order for you to not die in childbirth.
- 36:38Paul says instead, no, God has his creation order and it is not
- 36:46women centric Contra to the pagans.
- 36:49And it is not that your safety is guaranteed by false worship
- 36:54of idols. Instead just know as you're
- 36:58walking with Jesus and you're operating in faith and love and
- 37:01holiness, that as you walk with Christ you will be saved even
- 37:06through your childbearing and your childbirth because God is
- 37:11the one that will sustain you. The Pagan goddess will not
- 37:14sustain you. I said there were three ways
- 37:18that the passage can be taken. The third way the passage would
- 37:21be taken would be that because of the Pagan religions that Paul
- 37:26is arguing against, that this was the prohibition against
- 37:31women having authority over men, that this was a singular time
- 37:38and place in Ephesus and that this doesn't go for all churches
- 37:43everywhere. Those are the main three ways
- 37:48that this has been taken. As Southern Baptist, we would
- 37:51hold to the second option, which would say that this is the
- 37:55command of God that he has who he wants as pastors, elders,
- 37:59overseers, those that have authority in, in particularly
- 38:05those teaching roles over the local church, if you will, in
- 38:10the gathered assembly together where everyone is together.
- 38:13What we might call today, you know, our worship service on a
- 38:17Sunday morning, that men, elders, pastors, bishops,
- 38:22overseers, those are to be men. As a result of what we would
- 38:27read here and what we'll see next episode.
- 38:29This has been the longest episode of Tabernacle Talk ever.
- 38:34I hope that it has been helpful to you.
- 38:37Again, if you have any questions, please e-mail, text,
- 38:41call. Would love to have a
- 38:43conversation with you. God bless.
