- 0:20Speaker 1: don't tell you gotta work.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Welcome to Let's Talk with Carl Lee. Let's Talk is
- 0:26Speaker 2: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker, Real Talk, Real experience,
- 0:30Speaker 2: Real results, Frank Walker, Law dot Com. Let that conversation
- 0:34Speaker 2: begin on Let's Talk.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, this is Curllee with Let's Talk.
- 0:40Speaker 3: And uh, I have Lisa Odie in the building, and uh,
- 0:46Speaker 3: Hollis Lewis on air.
- 0:47Speaker 4: I do believe Hollis.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Are you there?
- 0:51Speaker 5: Yes, I am, I'm here.
- 0:52Speaker 3: All right, Well, I've got some I got an interesting conversation.
- 1:01Speaker 4: That I wanted I want to start the show out with.
- 1:04Speaker 3: And it's like who do you think is the best quarterback?
- 1:10Speaker 3: And or or like why okay, like there's like a
- 1:14Speaker 3: there's like a ton of great quarterbacks. I think did
- 1:18Speaker 3: you send me a list?
- 1:19Speaker 6: Oh well, let's let's just even go further than what
- 1:22Speaker 6: you're trying to tear down this route. I'm gonna I'm
- 1:24Speaker 6: gonna give you some background information. So ESPN and I
- 1:30Speaker 6: kind of was aware of this, but I wasn't. I
- 1:31Speaker 6: didn't think it was official, but it really is. So
- 1:34Speaker 6: every year this time of year, in July, ESPN compiles
- 1:38Speaker 6: this list and it's actually Jeremy Fowler is the one
- 1:43Speaker 6: that leads it, and he gives out this survey of
- 1:47Speaker 6: over to over seventy league executives, coaches, scouts, all these
- 1:52Speaker 6: different people that are associated with the NFL, and they
- 1:56Speaker 6: compile the top ten quarterbacks going into the summer camps
- 2:01Speaker 6: and the twenty twenty six NFL season. Okay, so I'm
- 2:05Speaker 6: just going to read the list and then I'm gonna
- 2:07Speaker 6: let you.
- 2:09Speaker 3: And Collins either you as a quarterback, Hollis, you as
- 2:13Speaker 3: a quarterback, you have you know, you have some pluses here,
- 2:19Speaker 3: So we'll see, we'll see what you're thinking.
- 2:21Speaker 5: All right, got you?
- 2:23Speaker 6: Okay, So you guys can either agree, disagree whatever you
- 2:26Speaker 6: want to do with this. Okay. So this is ESPN's list,
- 2:29Speaker 6: like I said, and it's compiled by all these different
- 2:31Speaker 6: people associated with the league. Number one Josh Allen, number two,
- 2:37Speaker 6: Patrick Mahomes number three, Matt Stafford number four, Joe Burrow
- 2:42Speaker 6: number five, Lamar Jackson. Number six is Dak Prescott. That
- 2:47Speaker 6: pains me to say that number seven is Justin Herbert,
- 2:51Speaker 6: eight is Drake May, nine is Jared Goff, and ten
- 2:55Speaker 6: is Caleb Williams, which is also another painful one for
- 2:58Speaker 6: me to say. All right, so guys, go for it,
- 3:02Speaker 6: all right.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Josh Allen to me, is not the number one, Okay.
- 3:07Speaker 3: I just I can't get past Patrick Mahomes being number
- 3:12Speaker 3: one because of his play and what he has done
- 3:18Speaker 3: as a quarterback as.
- 3:20Speaker 4: A leader of a team.
- 3:22Speaker 3: He I mean he basically when he started, when you
- 3:26Speaker 3: started hearing his name, all of a sudden, his team
- 3:30Speaker 3: becomes notable.
- 3:31Speaker 6: Okay.
- 3:32Speaker 3: So to me, I don't think there's anybody else on
- 3:36Speaker 3: the list that could say that they changed the whole
- 3:41Speaker 3: dynamic of their team.
- 3:43Speaker 6: Hmm, Hollis jump in buddy.
- 3:47Speaker 5: All right, well I think.
- 3:52Speaker 6: Yes, yes we can here.
- 3:53Speaker 5: Okay, all right, I think you know, I like the
- 3:56Speaker 5: names on the list. I don't necessarily agree with the order.
- 4:02Speaker 5: I wouldn't necessarily have Josh Allen number one for me. Also,
- 4:05Speaker 5: I can see the argument. However, there's one egregious omission
- 4:11Speaker 5: in this is that Sam Donaldson is not on the list.
- 4:14Speaker 6: I thought that, so for me.
- 4:16Speaker 5: It's not necessarily about who's on the list, is just
- 4:20Speaker 5: that guy's not on the list. And I don't know
- 4:22Speaker 5: how you have a guy who's won a super Bowl,
- 4:26Speaker 5: last year's super Bowl winner and also prior to that,
- 4:29Speaker 5: when fourteen to two playoffs. So if we're looking at
- 4:33Speaker 5: just again we're talking historic, guess something different. But if
- 4:37Speaker 5: we're talking short term, like in the now, he has
- 4:41Speaker 5: to be on the list. So that would be my
- 4:44Speaker 5: biggest takeaway from it.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Okay, now let me ask this question. Okay, and I'm
- 4:50Speaker 3: giving you your problems as a QB of this list
- 4:54Speaker 3: though I don't see I can't see how. Okay, let
- 5:00Speaker 3: me let me define it this way. I look at
- 5:03Speaker 3: Patrick Mahomes and what he has achieved in Kansas City,
- 5:10Speaker 3: how he has done it, and I think that to
- 5:15Speaker 3: me brings into a factor that's not a stat it's leadership.
- 5:22Speaker 3: And I think that piece of his ability to turn
- 5:27Speaker 3: that program around as a notable team, to me, I
- 5:34Speaker 3: think it's something that I don't think any of these
- 5:36Speaker 3: other players have done.
- 5:38Speaker 5: Okay, go ahead, No, I was just saying, I think
- 5:44Speaker 5: it's not necessarily necessarily about that. If we look at
- 5:47Speaker 5: any of those guys, all those guys have, They'll say,
- 5:51Speaker 5: I think we're just talking about like who's going to
- 5:53Speaker 5: be far as the best, you know coming into this season.
- 5:58Speaker 5: And I would agree, I would agree with the list.
- 6:01Speaker 5: I don't know if I would have your number two
- 6:02Speaker 5: or whatever, but I don't think he's the number one,
- 6:05Speaker 5: considering he's got hurt, Considering Kansas City's always had sort
- 6:11Speaker 5: of a lack of weapons, so I could see the
- 6:15Speaker 5: argument for him not being number one.
- 6:18Speaker 6: Okay, I'm going to throw this out there to everybody
- 6:21Speaker 6: before Matt gives his I want Matt's opinion on this
- 6:24Speaker 6: as well. But this is this is something that I
- 6:27Speaker 6: found in the research today. When it comes to this
- 6:29Speaker 6: actual survey and the people that completed it, fifteen percent
- 6:34Speaker 6: of those voters kept my Homes out of their top three,
- 6:37Speaker 6: not just one and two out of their top three.
- 6:40Speaker 6: And their reasons. The reasons were with some you know,
- 6:44Speaker 6: they're citing lingering effects from hints, which I guess they're
- 6:47Speaker 6: referring to, you know, you know, his late season ACL
- 6:52Speaker 6: tear last year and other you know, concussions and such,
- 6:55Speaker 6: and the tendency to choose big plays or chase big plays.
- 7:01Speaker 6: I thought that was the whole purpose of an NFL
- 7:03Speaker 6: quarterback is to chase big plays. Now, why are they
- 7:06Speaker 6: holding that against Mahomes?
- 7:08Speaker 3: Well, I'll even ask this question, why are they holding
- 7:12Speaker 3: his injuries? Because let's let's talk about where prior to
- 7:16Speaker 3: him getting his first major injury, how good was he then?
- 7:21Speaker 3: Where was he taking that Kansas City team? Like, because
- 7:24Speaker 3: all of a sudden, everybody's like, who is that quarterback?
- 7:26Speaker 3: Like what's going on in Kansas City? Like how is
- 7:28Speaker 3: this happening now all of a sudden, He's been around
- 7:32Speaker 3: for a while, and now we're now we're trying to
- 7:36Speaker 3: I'm going to say, downplay him, and I just don't
- 7:39Speaker 3: think that you can.
- 7:41Speaker 5: Well, I think we're talking again, We're not talking historic,
- 7:44Speaker 5: We're talking about just coming into the season. And I
- 7:46Speaker 5: think those were those criticism was all legit because when
- 7:51Speaker 5: you're a quarterback, you supposed you're supposed to take the
- 7:54Speaker 5: play that's given and sometimes when you chasing a big play,
- 7:57Speaker 5: you make mistakes. And again, if we're talking about just
- 8:01Speaker 5: what have you done for me lately, we're talking about
- 8:04Speaker 5: ranking going to the season, then all those criticisms are
- 8:08Speaker 5: definitely legit, particularly the injuries.
- 8:11Speaker 7: Here's my issue, with this.
- 8:13Speaker 8: I have major issues with the number three of the
- 8:15Speaker 8: number four spots on this We'll start with number four.
- 8:19Speaker 8: We're talking about Mahomes and injuries. What about Joe Burrow. Yes,
- 8:24Speaker 8: Mahomes was injured more recently, but ever since Joe Burrow
- 8:29Speaker 8: has gone out and come back ready to play? What
- 8:32Speaker 8: has he done since that one good season they had.
- 8:36Speaker 8: My other thing here is I find it a little
- 8:39Speaker 8: bit interesting if you scroll through this list and you
- 8:41Speaker 8: look at the ages, there is one thing that glares
- 8:45Speaker 8: out of everything here. Josh Allen is thirty, Patrick Mahomes
- 8:48Speaker 8: is thirty, Matt Stafford is thirty eight.
- 8:53Speaker 7: Then you keep on going down.
- 8:54Speaker 8: Joe Burrow is twenty nine, Lamar Jackson is twenty nine,
- 8:59Speaker 8: Dak Prescott is thirty two. He's a little older, but
- 9:01Speaker 8: still not thirty eight. Justin Hurtz is twenty eight, Drake
- 9:06Speaker 8: May twenty three, Jared Goff is thirty one, and finally
- 9:10Speaker 8: the ten spot, Caleb Williams is twenty four. I think
- 9:14Speaker 8: now I respect Matt Stafford a lot because I thought
- 9:18Speaker 8: when he moved from the Lions to LA I thought,
- 9:23Speaker 8: this guy's finally going to get what he has been missing.
- 9:26Speaker 7: His whole career.
- 9:27Speaker 8: So I have mad respect for what he's done in
- 9:29Speaker 8: the league, but I think maybe third place is kind
- 9:32Speaker 8: of like this is sort of the veteran quarterback of
- 9:35Speaker 8: the league right here. We're going to stick him up
- 9:37Speaker 8: towards the top just as an homage because he's actually that.
- 9:42Speaker 6: Good, right, It's a tribute to his longevity in the NFL,
- 9:46Speaker 6: you respect.
- 9:47Speaker 8: For the career, and not necessarily what he's actually going
- 9:49Speaker 8: to be capable of.
- 9:50Speaker 6: Well here, I think those all legitimate points, Matt and
- 9:54Speaker 6: thank you, but this is my problem. Like Hollis said,
- 9:58Speaker 6: they left out okay, and I'm sorry Jordan Love. Where's
- 10:01Speaker 6: Jordan Love in the mix here? I mean, I know
- 10:03Speaker 6: I'm a Picker fan and that that probably colors my
- 10:06Speaker 6: view of it, maybe a tad, but hey, we don't
- 10:11Speaker 6: need any peanut gallery comments. I'm just kidding. So I
- 10:14Speaker 6: really feel like, what about brock Party, Where's he? True? So,
- 10:18Speaker 6: I mean, there are names left out and in some
- 10:20Speaker 6: of these others, you know, Drake may come on, I
- 10:23Speaker 6: don't think he's legitimately been in the league long enough
- 10:26Speaker 6: to make this list. Yeah, he had an outstanding season,
- 10:30Speaker 6: and I think, you know, Hollis is probably correct in
- 10:32Speaker 6: we're looking at the here and now, we're looking at
- 10:35Speaker 6: the upcoming season and the expectations of what's going to
- 10:38Speaker 6: happen with teams in their quarterbacks. But still, I think
- 10:40Speaker 6: you're leaving out a lot of legitimate quarterbacks that had
- 10:43Speaker 6: good play last season.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Prescott like, like, I mean, is he going to be okay?
- 10:51Speaker 3: So let's let's assume he plays two more years than
- 10:54Speaker 3: he's out the league. Is he going to be like
- 10:57Speaker 3: one of the most notable quarterbacks we've ever gone that
- 11:00Speaker 3: we remember that played for Dallas or even played in
- 11:03Speaker 3: the league. I say no, Like I'm thinking about people
- 11:08Speaker 3: if for me, I'm looking at okay. So let's say
- 11:11Speaker 3: when you retire, and let's say you retired this season,
- 11:16Speaker 3: how many of these players would you actually say, are
- 11:22Speaker 3: gonna have status enough to be the Hall of Fame,
- 11:26Speaker 3: every possible award there is they're gonna be capable of.
- 11:32Speaker 3: I don't think that. I think these younger guys. I
- 11:34Speaker 3: think these younger guys they still have time. They're good,
- 11:40Speaker 3: but they are not seasoned as as as somebody like
- 11:44Speaker 3: a Patrick Mahomes. I'm sorry, that's just no way, but
- 11:46Speaker 3: you got it.
- 11:47Speaker 5: You have to admit that Derek Prescott's going to be
- 11:50Speaker 5: considered one of the best quarterbacks of his era. He
- 11:53Speaker 5: may not be all time, but we cannot deny his stats,
- 11:57Speaker 5: we cannot deny his ability.
- 11:59Speaker 4: I'm okay with him. I'm okay, I'm okay about him.
- 12:02Speaker 5: Say that about him.
- 12:03Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 12:04Speaker 5: But the thing is, I think every quarterback on this list,
- 12:07Speaker 5: they're going to be well, except for the young guys,
- 12:09Speaker 5: and we're talking about established guys. They're going to be considered.
- 12:13Speaker 5: I agree, that's in the era. I agree again, they're
- 12:16Speaker 5: all not going to be all times.
- 12:17Speaker 3: I agree, But like I said, the young ones, I
- 12:21Speaker 3: don't know where you put the what would make you
- 12:24Speaker 3: put them in this list?
- 12:26Speaker 5: But who else would you pick? You can't You would
- 12:28Speaker 5: you not pick Caleb Williams in this list? He deserves it.
- 12:32Speaker 5: You have to because he's a He's a If we're
- 12:34Speaker 5: looking at top ten quarterbacks going into next season, he's that.
- 12:37Speaker 5: There is nobody above him as far as going into
- 12:40Speaker 5: the season. So I think, like I said, I think
- 12:42Speaker 5: with the and I would I would agree with Matt
- 12:45Speaker 5: that maybe Joe Burrow He's maybe the one that I
- 12:48Speaker 5: would say, probably take him off the list. Just just
- 12:51Speaker 5: because he really hasn't or the team hasn't done much
- 12:54Speaker 5: just that Super Bowl season, and they have all the weapons.
- 12:57Speaker 5: When we talked about weapons, they have some legitimate weapons
- 13:00Speaker 5: that a lot of those other teams had. So, like
- 13:02Speaker 5: I said, I said, you have to put some of
- 13:04Speaker 5: the young kids, because again they Drake May, Caleb Williams,
- 13:08Speaker 5: they had great season last season, so you can't deny that.
- 13:11Speaker 6: All right, I'm going to argue about the Doc Prescott pick.
- 13:14Speaker 6: I'm sorry, when was the last time last time he
- 13:16Speaker 6: led the Cowboys to the soup or to a playoff game?
- 13:20Speaker 6: When was the last time that the Dallas Cowboys under
- 13:24Speaker 6: the leadership of Doc Prescott made a playoff even a
- 13:27Speaker 6: wild card? It's been a minute, right, I think so,
- 13:32Speaker 6: So if we're looking at going into the season, they
- 13:36Speaker 6: didn't even make the playoffs last year. So if that's
- 13:40Speaker 6: the case, if we're not looking at their whole body
- 13:42Speaker 6: of work, how do you justify putting him on there? Okay,
- 13:45Speaker 6: I can justify Caleb Williams that the Bears made a
- 13:47Speaker 6: deep run into the playoffs, right, So that's that. We'll
- 13:51Speaker 6: take that one. Yeah, But I'm not taking Dic because
- 13:55Speaker 6: and I'm sorry Cowboy fans. I know they're probably going
- 13:57Speaker 6: to be you know, I'm drinking the hater ade. But
- 14:01Speaker 6: I mean, honestly, if we're if we're looking at, you know,
- 14:05Speaker 6: the past seasons, what they've done in the past, what
- 14:08Speaker 6: they've accomplished, and what to expect this coming, you know,
- 14:11Speaker 6: twenty twenty sixth season, is that not legitimate?
- 14:15Speaker 7: Well here's the thing to think about though.
- 14:18Speaker 8: You do kind of have to look at his stats
- 14:20Speaker 8: a little bit, because I mean, yes, the quarterback is
- 14:23Speaker 8: a major piece of it, but maybe it reflects more
- 14:27Speaker 8: so the missing pieces that have been in Dallas, because
- 14:31Speaker 8: I mean he has let's say, here's four seasons with
- 14:34Speaker 8: four thousand passing yards and thirty touchdown passes. That is
- 14:39Speaker 8: the sixth most all time behind Drew Brees, Manning, Brady
- 14:43Speaker 8: Rogers and Phil.
- 14:44Speaker 5: Rivers's and Derek Prescott has the black cloud over him,
- 14:51Speaker 5: which is Jerry Jones. So I thought about what piece
- 14:55Speaker 5: he has is what he has to deal with, and
- 14:57Speaker 5: I think Dray Jones has made the situation almost untenable
- 15:01Speaker 5: for any quarterback. So to Matt's point, you got it,
- 15:04Speaker 5: I mean, statistically speaking, he's put them in a position
- 15:08Speaker 5: to win. They just, like I said, for whatever reason,
- 15:11Speaker 5: and I would blame my I will point to Jerry Jones.
- 15:13Speaker 5: They haven't, you know, gotten over the hump?
- 15:16Speaker 3: Well I would Jerry Jones could probably take a whole
- 15:18Speaker 3: host of blame for a lot of a lot of
- 15:21Speaker 3: Dallas's issues.
- 15:25Speaker 4: Who of of this, of this list, hollis.
- 15:30Speaker 3: The the oldest two or three players?
- 15:37Speaker 4: Is there somebody? Is there?
- 15:39Speaker 3: Is there a possibility that there could be some uh,
- 15:42Speaker 3: a younger player that let's say, if this list will
- 15:46Speaker 3: come out again right after this season, would would those
- 15:51Speaker 3: guys be gone?
- 15:53Speaker 7: Do you think?
- 15:53Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 15:54Speaker 5: Yeah, I think you're going to have a couple of guards.
- 15:56Speaker 5: Like I say, Matthew Stafford, he's winding down, so I
- 16:00Speaker 5: don't think he'll be there, let's all. And I gotta
- 16:02Speaker 5: say this. I gotta say this because when we talk about,
- 16:06Speaker 5: you know, leading to the playoffs and getting the big win,
- 16:09Speaker 5: I think we gotta start questioning Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen.
- 16:13Speaker 5: Great individual players, and like I said, I think they'll
- 16:15Speaker 5: maintain themselves on the list, But when we talk about
- 16:18Speaker 5: it's time to get over the hump, if any teams,
- 16:21Speaker 5: we gotta talk about those two. So I would say,
- 16:24Speaker 5: you know, those three quarterbacks to me, would be on
- 16:27Speaker 5: the bubble as far as you know, making us maybe
- 16:32Speaker 5: top five is from even making the list, particularly when
- 16:34Speaker 5: it comes to Matthew Stafford.
- 16:36Speaker 7: Do you so.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Anybody everybody on this list now come Super Bowl time
- 16:46Speaker 3: or let's even say playoff time, if you're not in
- 16:50Speaker 3: that playoff time, there's no way you are on this list.
- 16:54Speaker 6: No, that's not necessarily true, because I think so. Doc
- 16:57Speaker 6: Prescott's on there and they didn't make the playoffs slash year,
- 17:01Speaker 6: which right did help me if I'm correct me if
- 17:06Speaker 6: I'm wrong, did the Bengals make the playoffs this past
- 17:08Speaker 6: year and he's on the list. So, I mean, I
- 17:12Speaker 6: don't think that that it's it's a body of work
- 17:14Speaker 6: of the team.
- 17:16Speaker 3: I mean, I'm not okay with you know, I'm just
- 17:19Speaker 3: saying like I'm not I'm looking at the list and
- 17:22Speaker 3: I'm not sure that I'm okay with a whole lot
- 17:24Speaker 3: of the names. I'm thinking it's pop To me, it's
- 17:29Speaker 3: popular names, notable names, and not necessarily the work. You
- 17:34Speaker 3: might not have. Actually, you might not have ten top quarterbacks.
- 17:39Speaker 3: You may only have five, Well you gotta have. You
- 17:42Speaker 3: might only have five you might have. You know what
- 17:46Speaker 3: happens if they said, Okay, well we want to do fifteen.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Could there be fit? Do you think there could be fifteen?
- 17:54Speaker 3: I mean, could there be five other quarterbacks that you
- 17:56Speaker 3: could add into this list?
- 17:58Speaker 6: I mean, I would reduce the list on thank you.
- 18:00Speaker 6: I mean, I think ten is a bit much, you know,
- 18:04Speaker 6: especially when you get to the bottom of the list.
- 18:06Speaker 6: And I think a lot of these these players, I mean,
- 18:08Speaker 6: they're interchangeable. I mean, I think I think, you know,
- 18:11Speaker 6: some of them are ranked too low or too high.
- 18:14Speaker 6: I'm okay with Josh Allen. I mean, I feel like
- 18:17Speaker 6: Josh Allen. They make the playoffs consistently, the Bills get there,
- 18:20Speaker 6: they get close to the super Bowl. Mahomes make you
- 18:23Speaker 6: know they get there too, you know. And when Alan's
- 18:27Speaker 6: on his a game, he's unstoppable basically, you know, he's
- 18:31Speaker 6: cut down on his turnovers. The future's bright for him
- 18:35Speaker 6: and for the Bills.
- 18:36Speaker 5: But but the thing about Alan is like when they lose,
- 18:39Speaker 5: it tends to be his fault. When they losing the
- 18:42Speaker 5: big game, it's a fumble, it's a pick, it's a
- 18:46Speaker 5: mishap that directly attributes to him.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Okay, and if you okay, and I'm okay with that,
- 18:56Speaker 3: But I'm thinking as.
- 18:57Speaker 4: They're ranking them, they're ranking them.
- 18:59Speaker 3: In the in their order. Is that or is it?
- 19:03Speaker 3: Or do we just think so? So Josh allen Is
- 19:06Speaker 3: is number one on the.
- 19:09Speaker 6: List according to all of coaches executives. It's you know,
- 19:14Speaker 6: going back to who voted, it's seventy league executives, coaches
- 19:18Speaker 6: and scouts.
- 19:20Speaker 8: Well the couple other things to look at to the
- 19:22Speaker 8: lowest dranking anyone gave him out of that whole group
- 19:25Speaker 8: was fourth, and he was ranked number two last year.
- 19:29Speaker 8: So I mean he's been consistently up there, at least
- 19:32Speaker 8: the last couple of seasons.
- 19:33Speaker 6: M I think it'll be interesting, we should we should
- 19:37Speaker 6: revisit this list when it comes Super Bowl time and see,
- 19:41Speaker 6: you know how it plays out.
- 19:42Speaker 3: But or even we could even say playoff time.
- 19:45Speaker 6: Well that's true too.
- 19:47Speaker 4: Yeah, who's not going to be there?
- 19:49Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean I think it's uh, you know, worth
- 19:52Speaker 6: worth time. But yeah, so anyway, I thought that was
- 19:55Speaker 6: a good topic to h to touch on. What's what's
- 19:57Speaker 6: what else are we going to talk about tonight, mister Lee?
- 20:01Speaker 3: Well let me well, let me ask this question, all right,
- 20:07Speaker 3: we're gonna, We're gonna. I'm gonna I'm gonna no, No,
- 20:10Speaker 3: I'm gonna, I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go to Kate.
- 20:12Speaker 3: I'm gonna go to Caitlin Clark. Okay, now this has
- 20:19Speaker 3: been this has been a ongoing topic, discussion, argument, all
- 20:29Speaker 3: of those things about who and what she is. My
- 20:35Speaker 3: my complaint, Well, let me first say, I'm a huge fan.
- 20:40Speaker 3: We know, yeah, I'm a huge fan.
- 20:43Speaker 6: You've made that perfectly.
- 20:44Speaker 3: I'm a huge fan.
- 20:45Speaker 6: Caitlyn can do no wrong in Carle.
- 20:48Speaker 3: My only problem, my only problem if if if I
- 20:53Speaker 3: were going to say that, you know, something could change,
- 21:02Speaker 3: I would I wish that she would ignore, not the physicality.
- 21:10Speaker 3: That's the officials problem. Okay, I don't even want her
- 21:13Speaker 3: to say anything to any of those players. You're you're
- 21:17Speaker 3: too good in my view, You're above them. Don't let
- 21:22Speaker 3: them bring you down to you. Just get on the court,
- 21:25Speaker 3: play your game, and and and go home. I don't
- 21:30Speaker 3: want you to go out there and try to match
- 21:32Speaker 3: words with them and all of that kind of stuff
- 21:36Speaker 3: she does. I think she does sometimes and I think it,
- 21:39Speaker 3: I know it, And there's no way to say you
- 21:41Speaker 3: don't get frustrated. There's no way because you're always getting
- 21:44Speaker 3: pushed and shoved and all that kind of stuff.
- 21:46Speaker 4: I just don't want her.
- 21:47Speaker 3: I just don't want her because what happens if she
- 21:51Speaker 3: says something, she does something, now people are gonna say
- 21:56Speaker 3: she's just like them, she's part of that converse say
- 22:00Speaker 3: she's part of that division because now they're all talking
- 22:07Speaker 3: about each other. I don't want her to get it.
- 22:10Speaker 3: I don't want her to get into a into this
- 22:14Speaker 3: match of matching disrespect. I don't want her to do
- 22:19Speaker 3: that because she doesn't have to. Her game speaks for itself.
- 22:22Speaker 6: Hollas well.
- 22:26Speaker 5: I mean, I think you know, that's that's kind of
- 22:29Speaker 5: part of her personality as far as she's not she's
- 22:32Speaker 5: a feisty player, right So I think that, yeah, that's
- 22:35Speaker 5: part of her personality because as much as she takes it,
- 22:37Speaker 5: she gives it as well. And I think, you know,
- 22:40Speaker 5: as far as the other you know, women in the league,
- 22:43Speaker 5: I think there's a bit of frustration because she's not
- 22:46Speaker 5: the best player in the league. You know, she may
- 22:47Speaker 5: not be top tiers as far as in the w
- 22:50Speaker 5: n b A, as far as talent on the court
- 22:52Speaker 5: or best player, right now.
- 23:03Speaker 4: To get your cut out of the show.
- 23:06Speaker 5: Popular player. But she's certainly not you know, championship Brady,
- 23:11Speaker 5: she's not agent well, she's not those other players. So
- 23:13Speaker 5: there's some frustration on that end because she is getting
- 23:16Speaker 5: the bulk up the attention, so not based off of
- 23:20Speaker 5: what's happening on.
- 23:21Speaker 6: The st So Holi Sud, do you think it's the best? Holisud?
- 23:26Speaker 6: Do you think is the best player in the in
- 23:28Speaker 6: the w NBA right now?
- 23:30Speaker 5: It's clear Aja Will she's the best player in the
- 23:32Speaker 5: w n B A and she's embarking on becoming one
- 23:35Speaker 5: of the best women's basketball players of all time. It's
- 23:38Speaker 5: not it's without doubt she's the best. Well, you talked
- 23:42Speaker 5: about statistics, we talk about championships. She's it.
- 23:46Speaker 8: She's averaging twenty five and a half points a game
- 23:48Speaker 8: this season.
- 23:49Speaker 7: Wow.
- 23:50Speaker 4: And and and here's what I'll say.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Here's what I'll say about Caitlyn. Okay, So I'm going
- 23:59Speaker 3: to make the case that while all those other things,
- 24:03Speaker 3: those things matter and all that, she is by far
- 24:06Speaker 3: the best shooter. In my book, she's the best shooter.
- 24:11Speaker 3: And like Steph Curry, sometimes you don't win championships, but
- 24:19Speaker 3: there's no question about who is the best shooter. And
- 24:22Speaker 3: to me, most people.
- 24:24Speaker 5: Enjoy everyone championships. Huh, Steph Curry won a bunch of championships.
- 24:31Speaker 3: But again, I just believe, I wholeheartedly believe that her
- 24:38Speaker 3: shooting has brought more attention to to the to the
- 24:45Speaker 3: w NBA than anybody's actual play.
- 24:51Speaker 6: I'm going to jump in here, you know, I'm not
- 24:53Speaker 6: going to argue about, you know, who is the best
- 24:56Speaker 6: player in the w NBA. I do think she is
- 24:59Speaker 6: the most impactful. The Caitlin Clark effect, so to speak.
- 25:05Speaker 6: The things that she has done to bring more attention
- 25:07Speaker 6: to the w n B A is just as important
- 25:09Speaker 6: as her play on the court. She may not be
- 25:12Speaker 6: remembered as the best player, but people will remember her
- 25:15Speaker 6: for the impact that she has had for the league
- 25:19Speaker 6: and women's basketball in general.
- 25:22Speaker 3: I'm with you there, and it's this and to me
- 25:26Speaker 3: it is it is so to your point, hollis, if
- 25:30Speaker 3: she's not the best, My problems, my problem with that
- 25:37Speaker 3: in some degree is why is she taking all of
- 25:41Speaker 3: this punishment? Why are why is she physically being beat up,
- 25:48Speaker 3: tossed around and all of that foul?
- 25:51Speaker 4: Yes, why why is.
- 25:53Speaker 5: That the same the same reason Michael Jordan took you,
- 25:56Speaker 5: the same reason. Any young superstar is going to take
- 26:00Speaker 5: that punishment when you're coming in.
- 26:01Speaker 4: So you're comparing her to Michael Michael Jordan.
- 26:05Speaker 5: I'm comparing it to Michael Jordan on the fact that
- 26:08Speaker 5: when you come in and you're held as something, but
- 26:11Speaker 5: yet you haven't shown and proved that, and your and
- 26:14Speaker 5: your attention, your money, your your endorsements are superseding that
- 26:19Speaker 5: of established stars. Of course, is gonna be so victrial.
- 26:23Speaker 5: Of course, people are going to be in a fielding.
- 26:25Speaker 5: Of course, you're gonna get the best every night. So
- 26:29Speaker 5: you're gonna get whoever's defending you, whoever team you're playing,
- 26:32Speaker 5: They that team knows that the odds are gonna be
- 26:35Speaker 5: on that game because she's playing in it. So you're
- 26:38Speaker 5: gonna get the best every night. So that's something you're
- 26:40Speaker 5: gonna have to deal with. The question with her is
- 26:42Speaker 5: is that in the next two, three, four years, can
- 26:45Speaker 5: you overcome that and can you take that team to
- 26:48Speaker 5: win a championship, Because what we gotta remember, she's yet
- 26:51Speaker 5: to win championships. She didn't win win in college, she
- 26:54Speaker 5: didn't win She's not a champion as far as winning
- 26:56Speaker 5: the big one. So that's the question when her question
- 27:00Speaker 5: of whether this or out of that, can you take
- 27:03Speaker 5: that punishment, can you take everything that's going on and
- 27:06Speaker 5: flipp it to like what Michael Jordan or Steph Curry
- 27:09Speaker 5: or Lebron James into championship.
- 27:11Speaker 8: SV Matt, Well, it sounds like from what I from
- 27:17Speaker 8: what I got out of what Hollis said there, it
- 27:19Speaker 8: sounds like I think he believes there's potential there, but
- 27:23Speaker 8: she hasn't realized any of it yet. I mean, it's
- 27:25Speaker 8: not that she's having a bad year. I was looking
- 27:27Speaker 8: over some of her stats here. She's number two and
- 27:31Speaker 8: assists in the league. She's got seven point assists per
- 27:33Speaker 8: seven point eight assists per game. She's averaging twenty points
- 27:37Speaker 8: a game, shooting thirty three percent behind the three point
- 27:41Speaker 8: arc forty two percent on the field. She's shooting eighty
- 27:44Speaker 8: five percent of her free throws, so she's kind of
- 27:48Speaker 8: playing an all around game. She's not necessarily leading in
- 27:52Speaker 8: any stat category. But I mean, when you pile all
- 27:55Speaker 8: that up together, I mean, she's doing okay.
- 27:59Speaker 6: And I'm gonna ask to that, Matt. I'm glad you
- 28:01Speaker 6: brought up her stats, but think about and I'm not
- 28:03Speaker 6: saying that. You know, professional athletes probably all deal with
- 28:09Speaker 6: this to a degree, but for her, the pressure of
- 28:12Speaker 6: the media noise that she deals with every single game,
- 28:16Speaker 6: it's unprecedented. I mean, you think about it. You know,
- 28:19Speaker 6: she's under that media microscope, and you know sometimes that overshadows,
- 28:24Speaker 6: you know, her actual basketball play. It also makes the
- 28:27Speaker 6: other players single her out, you know, want, like like
- 28:31Speaker 6: Holli said, want to play their best, you know, to
- 28:34Speaker 6: show that they're better than her. And you know, the
- 28:37Speaker 6: toll mentally on her and her teammates on the Indiana
- 28:41Speaker 6: Fever it's got to be you know, it's got to
- 28:44Speaker 6: affect all of their mental games. I'm not saying it's
- 28:46Speaker 6: an excuse. I'm saying it might contribute to the fact
- 28:49Speaker 6: that they're not winning the championships. Yet it's a lot
- 28:52Speaker 6: to deal with.
- 28:55Speaker 4: And I think and we've heard this through the media.
- 29:00Speaker 3: Yeah, And so I'm gonna be comfortable in saying having
- 29:10Speaker 3: having being white and being such a great player, some
- 29:15Speaker 3: of the black players don't like it. That's just that's
- 29:20Speaker 3: that's true. In my book, I feel like that's part
- 29:25Speaker 3: of the reason, part of the reasons why she's getting
- 29:28Speaker 3: knocked down, stepped on, kicked, all those kinds of things.
- 29:33Speaker 4: Is because of who she is and how she looks Alas,
- 29:38Speaker 4: there's no there's no there's no follow up on that
- 29:40Speaker 4: is no.
- 29:42Speaker 5: I think it's it's not just we can't tape purely
- 29:44Speaker 5: because she's white. I mean, obviously that has to do
- 29:48Speaker 5: as far as her marketability. You know, obviously when we
- 29:51Speaker 5: come to endorsements and being like a you know, so.
- 29:54Speaker 3: What you're saying, So if you get more marketing than
- 29:59Speaker 3: I get, you get you get put out there more
- 30:01Speaker 3: than I do, then I'm I'm I'm gonna take that
- 30:03Speaker 3: out on the field against you.
- 30:06Speaker 5: I'm a I'm a cheap shot one hundred. That's what's
- 30:09Speaker 5: going on. Like I said, it's like she's she's ascended
- 30:13Speaker 5: to the face of the league based on a number
- 30:15Speaker 5: of things except for a championship, except Will being the
- 30:19Speaker 5: best player and any those players don't have a problem with.
- 30:23Speaker 7: Well, it's not just tailoring Clark too.
- 30:25Speaker 8: Think about like Sophie Cunningham and the twenty two second
- 30:29Speaker 8: pointing thing that she did with Dowanna Bonnas a few
- 30:32Speaker 8: weeks ago.
- 30:33Speaker 7: I mean, talk about a viral w NBA moment.
- 30:37Speaker 4: And and and and again.
- 30:39Speaker 3: What is interesting to that point is that this has
- 30:44Speaker 3: been able to be something. It's happening, and it's being basically,
- 30:51Speaker 3: it's okay, it's okay. You know, you may you may,
- 30:54Speaker 3: you may get thrown out of game, you may get
- 30:56Speaker 3: a foul, you might get something like that.
- 30:58Speaker 4: But this ship, this should be.
- 31:00Speaker 3: This is something that I think you have to stop
- 31:03Speaker 3: because you're going to get somebody physically hurt that because
- 31:09Speaker 3: of the cheap shots and things that are taking place.
- 31:12Speaker 5: A professional athlete. They are because I, because I could
- 31:16Speaker 5: say the same thing about is intended to be in
- 31:19Speaker 5: the face of the league not necessarily deserve me.
- 31:22Speaker 4: So is a cheap shot. It doesn't make any difference.
- 31:26Speaker 3: It does not make It's not okay to do a
- 31:28Speaker 3: cheap shot, even if drop.
- 31:32Speaker 5: But I wouldn't. I wouldn't say cheap shot. I would
- 31:34Speaker 5: say the players are playing hard.
- 31:36Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, come on, hollers, come on you brother, Okay,
- 31:43Speaker 3: how do you how do you punch somebody in the
- 31:45Speaker 3: throat as an accident company with that? Because because I
- 31:53Speaker 3: might have that accident tomorrow with you, Like, how is
- 32:00Speaker 3: that possible? Oh boy? That is that is you can't
- 32:05Speaker 3: you can't sell me on that. I'm sorry, and I.
- 32:09Speaker 6: Think I think basically it comes down to the fact
- 32:11Speaker 6: that when we when people have conversations about Caitlin Clark,
- 32:15Speaker 6: she is culturally polarizing period, yes, and people see her
- 32:20Speaker 6: as this you know, lightning rod for you know, conversations
- 32:25Speaker 6: about gender, about race, rivalries and and it all plays
- 32:30Speaker 6: out on the court. And these girls, you know, they're human.
- 32:34Speaker 3: The bad thing about the rivalry piece is the rivalry
- 32:38Speaker 3: is to me, if I have a rivalry against you,
- 32:41Speaker 3: it's because how good you are. And you know, me
- 32:45Speaker 3: and Sterling had a rivalry, right, you know, but but
- 32:48Speaker 3: we were still able to be friends, great friends. Right
- 32:51Speaker 3: in this situation, this has gotten out of hand because
- 32:57Speaker 3: players who because she's getting that attend she's getting all
- 33:01Speaker 3: the attention, sucking it all up. She probably is the
- 33:05Speaker 3: most notable player in the WNBA, and these individual other
- 33:11Speaker 3: these other individual players don't like it. So now they're
- 33:16Speaker 3: taking it out on her. She didn't write the article.
- 33:20Speaker 3: She's not writing article. She's the one who the somebody's
- 33:25Speaker 3: writing those articles about her, saying this about her.
- 33:27Speaker 4: She's not saying it about herself.
- 33:29Speaker 3: This is all.
- 33:29Speaker 6: Media, I agree, like I said, she's under the media microscope.
- 33:33Speaker 6: That's just part of her role.
- 33:35Speaker 3: And the individuals who get up kick her, put your
- 33:41Speaker 3: your your fist in her neck like that kind of
- 33:44Speaker 3: stuff makes no sense to me. And and what are
- 33:47Speaker 3: you trying to do? Are you trying to hurt her?
- 33:50Speaker 3: Because if you hurt her and she's out of the league,
- 33:52Speaker 3: I'm not sure you're going to have the same the
- 33:56Speaker 3: same amount of attention that you had before.
- 33:58Speaker 6: I was just going to say that I know that
- 34:00Speaker 6: there's some rivalry pieces you know, out there, and the
- 34:03Speaker 6: and the cultural polarization of her, but let's just face it,
- 34:07Speaker 6: the WNBA has benefitted greatly from the acquisition of Kaitlyn Clark.
- 34:12Speaker 6: I mean you look at it. You've got you know,
- 34:14Speaker 6: it's boosted attendance, the games, merchandise sales, you know, viewership
- 34:20Speaker 6: on TV media, RTEs, all those things. You know, they're
- 34:23Speaker 6: even drawing in the non traditional basketball fans because they're
- 34:28Speaker 6: curious to see, you know what all this hooplaw is
- 34:31Speaker 6: about this player, Kaitlyn Clark. So there's all positives these girls,
- 34:36Speaker 6: you know, these women I shouldn't say girls. Women do
- 34:39Speaker 6: not want to see her get hurt and permanently put
- 34:41Speaker 6: out of the league because it's just going to hurt
- 34:42Speaker 6: all of them in the long run.
- 34:44Speaker 4: I don't think that they see that. I don't think
- 34:45Speaker 4: that they see that.
- 34:46Speaker 3: I don't think they even Actually some of them don't
- 34:49Speaker 3: buy it because they think they can be the one.
- 34:53Speaker 4: I'm the one.
- 34:54Speaker 3: Who's going to be the face if she gets hurt,
- 34:57Speaker 3: she gets out, she's not playing. I can be the
- 34:59Speaker 3: face of the league. But I don't think so.
- 35:03Speaker 4: I don't think.
- 35:04Speaker 5: I don't think that they can carry.
- 35:05Speaker 4: I don't think they can carry.
- 35:06Speaker 5: I don't, I don't. I don't think they think like that.
- 35:08Speaker 5: They're just playing hard. And I think, like I said,
- 35:11Speaker 5: once she wins a championship, or she at least starts
- 35:13Speaker 5: to get to championships, all this noise to be dead.
- 35:16Speaker 5: It's just the fact that the matter is just like
- 35:18Speaker 5: I said, you got all the attention. So yeah, you're
- 35:20Speaker 5: gonna get your attention. Everybody's gonna play hard against you.
- 35:23Speaker 5: And I think that once she gets over the hump,
- 35:26Speaker 5: starts to get the conference championships and w NBA championships,
- 35:30Speaker 5: all this to be in the distant path.
- 35:32Speaker 3: All right, I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna switch a subject,
- 35:35Speaker 3: still with her, Okay, still with her, and and maybe
- 35:38Speaker 3: even just a w NBA what impact, how big of
- 35:45Speaker 3: an impact is Caitlyn Clark and or the w n
- 35:50Speaker 3: B A having on young women, young girls wanting to
- 35:57Speaker 3: play basketball? The gross margins of where women's basketball has gone,
- 36:05Speaker 3: whether whoever the reason it's gone, it's it's it's growing.
- 36:10Speaker 3: But I want to say that impact is Caitlin Clark.
- 36:16Speaker 5: I disagree with that totally. No, no, no, no, I know.
- 36:22Speaker 5: Here's the thing though, here's a thing. I don't dismiss
- 36:25Speaker 5: Caitlin Clark's impact on the game, but I think what's
- 36:29Speaker 5: called the greatest impact, and I think what's causing little
- 36:32Speaker 5: girls to want to aspire to be that is because
- 36:36Speaker 5: the w n B A has found his personality, It's
- 36:39Speaker 5: found his style. You got to remember, prior to this
- 36:42Speaker 5: era of w NBA players, all the women would try
- 36:45Speaker 5: to like mimic the guys, So they would dress like
- 36:48Speaker 5: the guys, they would play like the guys, and it
- 36:51Speaker 5: will kind of just be like a uh, you know,
- 36:53Speaker 5: a mimic of the of the men's and boys games.
- 36:56Speaker 5: Now you have women coming to the to the arena,
- 37:00Speaker 5: you know, in solettos and being dawned up looking like supermodel.
- 37:04Speaker 5: So I think girls now are looking at it will saying, hey,
- 37:07Speaker 5: I could still be a woman. I could still be myself.
- 37:10Speaker 5: I can still have that era femininity, but I can
- 37:13Speaker 5: go out there and ball as well. So there's a
- 37:15Speaker 5: dichotomy that they they've created within that. So I think
- 37:19Speaker 5: to me, that's the biggest impact of kind of this
- 37:24Speaker 5: era of WNBA players.
- 37:27Speaker 6: Okay, I'm going to throw my two cents in here, guys.
- 37:30Speaker 6: So I feel like with the WNBA also when whenever
- 37:36Speaker 6: they originally started the league, which I can't remember, it
- 37:40Speaker 6: escapes my mind how many years ago it was. But
- 37:43Speaker 6: wasn't it at a different time of the year. Wasn't
- 37:45Speaker 6: it during the same period of time that the NBA
- 37:49Speaker 6: was going on when they originally started. Help me, guys,
- 37:53Speaker 6: if you if you know that, because my point is
- 37:55Speaker 6: if it wasn't I think moving it to the summer,
- 38:00Speaker 6: you know, this time of year when you know, the
- 38:03Speaker 6: kids are out of school, the girls are out of school,
- 38:05Speaker 6: they can stay up late and watch the game with
- 38:08Speaker 6: mom and dad. You know, it's the availability of it
- 38:13Speaker 6: I think has helped the WNBA grow and get those
- 38:16Speaker 6: little girls to you know, watch and want to be
- 38:20Speaker 6: like the players that they see, not just necessarily Caitlin Clark.
- 38:23Speaker 6: She may have been the original reason they started watching,
- 38:26Speaker 6: but it's kind of you know, I agree with Hollis
- 38:28Speaker 6: to it to a point too. These girls are supermodels.
- 38:31Speaker 6: I mean they go out there. You know, They've got
- 38:33Speaker 6: their own type of style, their own type of game different,
- 38:36Speaker 6: completely different from the NBA. And I think having this
- 38:39Speaker 6: time of year to kind of you know, promote what
- 38:43Speaker 6: they're doing and play and be able to be seen
- 38:46Speaker 6: without interference from a lot of other men's sports, I
- 38:50Speaker 6: think that contributes to you know, people watching and the
- 38:54Speaker 6: little girls getting those role models and becoming interested.
- 38:57Speaker 8: Would you believe twenty nine years now? Way nineteen ninety
- 39:01Speaker 8: seven was the first age?
- 39:04Speaker 5: Are?
- 39:05Speaker 4: Gosh?
- 39:06Speaker 6: Yeah, do you know the time of year it originally started?
- 39:09Speaker 7: I don't, but I think it's shifted around.
- 39:11Speaker 8: I think, especially in those early seasons, I think they
- 39:15Speaker 8: kind of moved the starting end dates around to kind
- 39:17Speaker 8: of figure out where it would slot.
- 39:19Speaker 5: In there, right, And I think like the popularity of
- 39:25Speaker 5: women's college basketball helped too, because within I was like
- 39:29Speaker 5: probably the last ten years women's college basketball has been everything.
- 39:33Speaker 5: It's like now when they're looking at like revenue generating sports,
- 39:37Speaker 5: it's like, you know, it's football, men's basketball, women's basketball.
- 39:41Speaker 5: And in some cases when you look at like a Tennessee,
- 39:44Speaker 5: when you look at a Yukon, when you're looking at like,
- 39:47Speaker 5: you know, USC women's basketball might be like that second
- 39:51Speaker 5: revenue generating sports. So I think college basketball, like you,
- 39:56Speaker 5: like at least you mentioned happened just that full access
- 40:00Speaker 5: and now kind of we know these women behind the scenes,
- 40:02Speaker 5: You're getting to know their personality. Social media certainly helps
- 40:06Speaker 5: you know what I mean. So, like all that's a
- 40:09Speaker 5: contributing factors.
- 40:11Speaker 4: I'm wondering.
- 40:12Speaker 3: I'm wondering when and or if, like I know, you know,
- 40:18Speaker 3: and my involvement with youth is, you know, youth sports, and.
- 40:24Speaker 4: I'm trying to figure out when is there a time or.
- 40:29Speaker 3: Is there is there going to be an opportunity to
- 40:32Speaker 3: be able to create a youth sports program with basket
- 40:37Speaker 3: female basketball to get enough females female players to play.
- 40:44Speaker 5: I think if you often because I know, like Saint
- 40:47Speaker 5: Alfins has a league or just just girls.
- 40:50Speaker 4: How many teams do you know how many teams they have?
- 40:53Speaker 5: I don't know how many teams they have. I think
- 40:55Speaker 5: they're the only ones.
- 40:56Speaker 3: I think you're right because I do renounce you said that.
- 40:58Speaker 3: I think I remember somebody saying that.
- 41:00Speaker 5: Yeah, because I because I know I would like to definitely,
- 41:03Speaker 5: because I know my girls playing your league, and I
- 41:05Speaker 5: would love to have this all female, you know league,
- 41:09Speaker 5: so they can you know, be on equal footing.
- 41:11Speaker 3: That might be that may be something worth worth working on,
- 41:14Speaker 3: because you know, I think you know, and I don't
- 41:19Speaker 3: know if everywhere around the country has women's girls youth
- 41:25Speaker 3: basketball to play, but but it is something that needs
- 41:29Speaker 3: to happen for those young ladies.
- 41:31Speaker 5: Definitely have it. Yeah, they definitely have it. Just about
- 41:35Speaker 5: particular like if we can get the numbers up, you
- 41:38Speaker 5: know what I mean.
- 41:39Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, so I would again. I would like to
- 41:44Speaker 3: think though that the numbers may come simply because because
- 41:52Speaker 3: women's basketball now, the popularity of it, I think it
- 41:58Speaker 3: could be slow, you know what I'm saying, But I
- 42:02Speaker 3: think I could.
- 42:03Speaker 4: I can't imagine it not growing.
- 42:07Speaker 5: Because yeah, the only problem, like I said, I think
- 42:09Speaker 5: you definitely have the interest and the support a lot
- 42:13Speaker 5: of like I know, a bunch of little girls that
- 42:14Speaker 5: play basketball. The problem with that is just we use sport.
- 42:18Speaker 5: It's just this is a different conversation, but it's just
- 42:21Speaker 5: generally so much going on at one time, like kids
- 42:24Speaker 5: playing two or three sports and that the one season,
- 42:27Speaker 5: you know what I mean. Yeah, and that kind of
- 42:28Speaker 5: hurts the participation overall for any sport, not just women's
- 42:33Speaker 5: use sports, girls sport.
- 42:34Speaker 6: But summer they should maybe you know, do a reflection
- 42:37Speaker 6: of the of the w NBA. Maybe have it during
- 42:39Speaker 6: the summer rather than the winter. I know traditionally, you know,
- 42:42Speaker 6: you have basketball leagues that are in the winter, but
- 42:44Speaker 6: for girls, you know, summer might be a good time.
- 42:48Speaker 3: Good point, Yeah, I would think, I would think so.
- 42:50Speaker 3: And again I think that you know, we have you know,
- 42:54Speaker 3: with with you sports. I think, well, let's just say
- 42:58Speaker 3: sports in general, we've we've taken it and created this
- 43:05Speaker 3: kind of a monster. And you know, teams are you know,
- 43:10Speaker 3: or leagues are moving into summer balld and it's and
- 43:16Speaker 3: it's and it's literally getting to a point where you
- 43:18Speaker 3: could play basketball year round.
- 43:20Speaker 5: You know.
- 43:22Speaker 8: You know, you have to think a little bit too
- 43:23Speaker 8: about the creation period for women's sports. I mean it
- 43:27Speaker 8: came after boys and men's sports, so I mean think
- 43:31Speaker 8: about like way after yeah, yeah, think about the progression
- 43:35Speaker 8: of like final scores for games in the NBA. I
- 43:39Speaker 8: mean you go back into like the seventies and eighties.
- 43:42Speaker 8: I mean, a high scoring game was going to be
- 43:46Speaker 8: like eighty nine to ninety two final score. You're talking
- 43:49Speaker 8: about games now where I mean there were NBA Finals.
- 43:52Speaker 7: Games this year.
- 43:53Speaker 8: I think one of them, the Knicks had like one
- 43:54Speaker 8: hundred and forty points or something like that.
- 43:57Speaker 7: And that's just normal now.
- 44:00Speaker 8: That's an extra fifty points a game now in twenty
- 44:04Speaker 8: twenty five, twenty twenty six, twenty twenty seven that were
- 44:07Speaker 8: not being scored thirty forty fifty years ago. You have
- 44:10Speaker 8: to think that the WNBA is going to go through that, say,
- 44:13Speaker 8: the game is going to get faster for the women
- 44:16Speaker 8: just like it has for the men.
- 44:17Speaker 7: It's just not it's not a this hasn't happened yet.
- 44:21Speaker 3: Yeah, And and and I think that's that's that's that's
- 44:24Speaker 3: a true fact there. And I think we shouldn't we
- 44:29Speaker 3: shouldn't wait to try to grow it and let it
- 44:33Speaker 3: quote grow on its own. We've got we should be proactive.
- 44:37Speaker 3: The individuals who are part of that need they need
- 44:41Speaker 3: to start talking about women's basketball from from a young
- 44:47Speaker 3: age all the way through, because if you don't, it's
- 44:52Speaker 3: gonna be hard.
- 44:53Speaker 4: You know, it's gonna be hard for them to make
- 44:54Speaker 4: the adjustment.
- 44:55Speaker 7: You know.
- 44:56Speaker 3: I'm I'm at the rec center, so I see I
- 44:58Speaker 3: see different young girls that are down down at the
- 45:01Speaker 3: wreck plant, you know, and.
- 45:05Speaker 6: Which is awesome because I remember in my day, we
- 45:08Speaker 6: really didn't have an opportunity to play any type of
- 45:11Speaker 6: really a sport, sid's cheerleading, uh, you know, volleyball or
- 45:16Speaker 6: basketball until we hit back then it was junior high. Yeah,
- 45:20Speaker 6: you know, and then you're so far behind because the
- 45:22Speaker 6: boys have been playing Little League, you know, for all
- 45:24Speaker 6: during all this time and nobody and look at it,
- 45:29Speaker 6: right right, yeah, yeah.
- 45:30Speaker 8: Well another sport on kind of the same idea here
- 45:33Speaker 8: soccer here in the Canal Valley.
- 45:36Speaker 7: A lot of the high schools.
- 45:37Speaker 8: In our area really didn't start getting soccer teams until
- 45:40Speaker 8: what the nineties made. Yeah, and that kind of came
- 45:43Speaker 8: from both genders at the same time.
- 45:46Speaker 7: Now you're talking.
- 45:47Speaker 8: About University of Charleston, Marshall, University WVU, all in championship
- 45:53Speaker 8: discussion all the time at the college level, and you
- 45:56Speaker 8: have to think that some of that's got to be
- 45:58Speaker 8: because of what's going on here at the rec league
- 46:00Speaker 8: in the middle and high school levels as well. But
- 46:03Speaker 8: that's a sport that came way later, right and has exploded.
- 46:07Speaker 6: It has, it really has.
- 46:09Speaker 3: Yeah, we you know, I think when it comes to
- 46:13Speaker 3: the beginning of sports, of getting started in basketball, getting
- 46:20Speaker 3: started in football, getting started in baseball, I do buy
- 46:24Speaker 3: into the youth as as as young as possible to
- 46:29Speaker 3: some degree, just because so they can they have time
- 46:34Speaker 3: to develop. Because if you get if by the time
- 46:37Speaker 3: you're in in middle school, you kind of got to
- 46:43Speaker 3: already have some fundation, have some fundamental set and and
- 46:48Speaker 3: and and effective for you to be good enough to
- 46:52Speaker 3: get to high school and now have an opportunity to
- 46:55Speaker 3: maybe to get to college. If you wait too long,
- 46:59Speaker 3: you have to be a naturally gifted athlete or you're
- 47:04Speaker 3: just gonna fall.
- 47:04Speaker 4: It's just gonna be it's gonna you're gonna fall short. Yeah.
- 47:09Speaker 3: So I don't know, but I I just I just
- 47:12Speaker 3: think that I think that the that the women's sports
- 47:16Speaker 3: to me, I am, I am a strong supporter of
- 47:21Speaker 3: women's sports. Park and and.
- 47:24Speaker 6: The reason I'm gonna get you a Caitlyn shirt for Christmas.
- 47:29Speaker 4: And the reason that I am that is just because
- 47:32Speaker 4: of Caitlin Clark.
- 47:34Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, but it took to that point. I think
- 47:38Speaker 5: like women's sports, and again, you definitely need to cut
- 47:42Speaker 5: Kayler Clark. Don't get it confused. You need to get
- 47:44Speaker 5: Kaitlin Clark's in all sports. But I think what we're
- 47:46Speaker 5: starting to see is just like women's sports are just
- 47:50Speaker 5: ultra competitive, and I think they have a competitive fire
- 47:55Speaker 5: that that some of the men's sports don't are high.
- 48:01Speaker 7: On that.
- 48:01Speaker 5: And I tell you the two sports to watch out
- 48:05Speaker 5: for the next ten years that I think are going
- 48:07Speaker 5: to be major is a softball and women's flag football.
- 48:13Speaker 5: I think, along with basketball, I think those could be
- 48:16Speaker 5: the three major women's sports. And I'm talking about where
- 48:20Speaker 5: they they're going to pack our stadiums.
- 48:23Speaker 6: So I like the softball for sure.
- 48:26Speaker 4: Yeah, and and I.
- 48:28Speaker 6: Mean the flag football that that's gonna take a little longer,
- 48:31Speaker 6: don't you think college just because of the fact that
- 48:33Speaker 6: it's not like, I mean, where is it happening. Is
- 48:36Speaker 6: it collegiate or.
- 48:37Speaker 5: Because everybody Okay, yeah, they're starting to have it at
- 48:42Speaker 5: at the youth and at some high schools. Are starting
- 48:44Speaker 5: to have like club sports, are starting to have club sports,
- 48:48Speaker 5: and also it's in the Olympics as well, So I
- 48:51Speaker 5: don't and I say the men's are in the Liberal
- 48:54Speaker 5: I don't know if they have a women's flag football yet,
- 48:55Speaker 5: no mess, but I think flag is because when we
- 48:58Speaker 5: look at the days, it's a football different things of that. Sure,
- 49:00Speaker 5: that is an alternative, you know, just overall, but I
- 49:04Speaker 5: think fought for specifically for women. It's fun to watch.
- 49:08Speaker 5: If you've never seen it.
- 49:09Speaker 3: Do you could you see? Could you see a merger
- 49:11Speaker 3: of football and flag football at the young level, at
- 49:14Speaker 3: the youth level, just for the safety, specifically for safety,
- 49:22Speaker 3: and then kind of I think gradually bring them into
- 49:25Speaker 3: show the pads and helmets and all that kind of stuff.
- 49:28Speaker 5: In my conjecture, I think that's what should happen. I
- 49:31Speaker 5: think when you're five, six, seven, eight, then you know
- 49:36Speaker 5: you nine, maybe used to be playing like some some
- 49:40Speaker 5: symbolance of some inner ration of flag football, and then
- 49:43Speaker 5: as you moved to like fourth or fifth grade, that's
- 49:45Speaker 5: what you start to do. The past. In my opinion,
- 49:47Speaker 5: I think that's fight was already happened. I don't think
- 49:50Speaker 5: you need to be slapping hamlets at years old.
- 49:54Speaker 3: And and you know, and again I do the youth
- 49:57Speaker 3: sports for the city of South Charleston, and I think
- 50:00Speaker 3: that that I think that the safety issue is enough,
- 50:06Speaker 3: it is present enough to try to change that, you know,
- 50:11Speaker 3: from you know, like you said, a kid.
- 50:14Speaker 4: Playing at five, a kid playing at six, you know, And.
- 50:17Speaker 6: And the earlier you start those hits, the more stones exactly,
- 50:23Speaker 6: you know, the earlier you start that, the more likely
- 50:25Speaker 6: you're going to have and the concussions pile up on
- 50:28Speaker 6: each other and then more risk for CTE and the
- 50:31Speaker 6: things that come along and hitting.
- 50:35Speaker 4: And the facts the facts of that.
- 50:39Speaker 7: Is proof.
- 50:39Speaker 3: I mean guys who have played football from me, like
- 50:43Speaker 3: I played football and in at the youth level, junior high,
- 50:48Speaker 3: high school, collegues, DA DA, da DA, and you can't
- 50:53Speaker 3: it and for the amount of all that contact, right,
- 50:57Speaker 3: it's just you know, it's it's it's not good for
- 51:00Speaker 3: It's not healthy.
- 51:00Speaker 4: You know, it's just not healthy.
- 51:01Speaker 5: And and I think we have too many irresponsible coaches, right,
- 51:06Speaker 5: So I think football to me, number one, no, no, not,
- 51:11Speaker 5: he shouldn't be like banging and doing all that hitting
- 51:14Speaker 5: and practice number one of those dumb Oklahoma drills and
- 51:16Speaker 5: different things of that nature. And I would say football,
- 51:20Speaker 5: to me, where we're losing at the at the youth
- 51:22Speaker 5: level is that we're too like preoccupied with winning and
- 51:27Speaker 5: not development. When you look at or you look at
- 51:29Speaker 5: baseball and soccer and football, I mean, of course they
- 51:32Speaker 5: want to win, but dude, you're not. I mean, you
- 51:35Speaker 5: want to tempership with eight year olds? I mean, great,
- 51:37Speaker 5: that's awesome, but do they know how to do they
- 51:39Speaker 5: know the fundamentals as they move up to the next level.
- 51:42Speaker 5: And I think football has got to get to that
- 51:44Speaker 5: place where it's not about winning, it's just about development
- 51:48Speaker 5: and teaching the right methodologies and not you know, hitting
- 51:53Speaker 5: crazy and doing scilly things.
- 51:55Speaker 3: And to that point, that's the that's that's the parent
- 51:58Speaker 3: that's mad at after the game is over because you're
- 52:01Speaker 3: lost and maybe your kid didn't play or didn't play enough,
- 52:05Speaker 3: or made a mistake or something like that, and the
- 52:08Speaker 3: coach got on them, so now they're they're mad. I
- 52:12Speaker 3: think we've gotta we gotta quit worrying about the mistakes.
- 52:17Speaker 3: At the youth level, we just you know, we just
- 52:20Speaker 3: need to have them playing, have a good time. And
- 52:24Speaker 3: it doesn't even and and you know, it could be
- 52:26Speaker 3: clock running, it could be you know, just anything, just
- 52:31Speaker 3: to have them out there and get them through it.
- 52:33Speaker 8: At the end of the day, when somebody's talking about
- 52:37Speaker 8: you at your funeral, are they gonna mention that you
- 52:39Speaker 8: were the sixth grade rec league champion.
- 52:42Speaker 7: No, No, nobody's gonna remember that.
- 52:45Speaker 5: No.
- 52:46Speaker 7: That should just be for the love of the game exactly.
- 52:49Speaker 4: And I'll say that, I'll say this to that.
- 52:53Speaker 3: You don't want to be the person who's going out
- 52:56Speaker 3: because of your memory.
- 52:57Speaker 4: You don't want to. You don't want to, like you know,
- 53:00Speaker 4: and like I said, I have memory issues. All right.
- 53:03Speaker 8: So were you diagnosed when you were in the league?
- 53:06Speaker 8: Did you have any officially diagnosed concussions. I'm sure you
- 53:10Speaker 8: probably had them.
- 53:10Speaker 3: And nobody, nobody had ever said to me, No trainer
- 53:16Speaker 3: ever said to me that I had a concussion.
- 53:19Speaker 7: Wow.
- 53:20Speaker 3: And I know for a fact, and I have all
- 53:23Speaker 3: my tapes, so I've gone back to see it.
- 53:26Speaker 4: I've gone back to see it.
- 53:28Speaker 6: That doesn't mean they didn't. They just didn't call them that.
- 53:31Speaker 4: I'm knocked out. I'm knocked out on the field.
- 53:34Speaker 3: My footed one leg is up, my hands are up,
- 53:38Speaker 3: and my neck is up and I'm laying on my back.
- 53:42Speaker 3: I'm I'm back in the game in three or four plays.
- 53:46Speaker 3: I didn't even after the game. I did not even remember,
- 53:50Speaker 3: not a play in the game.
- 53:52Speaker 6: Wow.
- 53:54Speaker 7: Wow. Because the protocol is obviously way different.
- 53:57Speaker 4: Now, it's way better.
- 53:59Speaker 3: But if you have that, if that, if that happens
- 54:04Speaker 3: to you, no, you're not going back in the game, right,
- 54:09Speaker 3: You're You're done for this game. There is no there
- 54:14Speaker 3: is no getting back in the game. Because he's your star.
- 54:19Speaker 3: You can't do that. That's just that's just, that's not
- 54:23Speaker 3: that's not because now what you're doing is you're doing
- 54:25Speaker 3: that for you. And don't say you're doing it for
- 54:28Speaker 3: the team, because if the team loses, the team loses, everybody.
- 54:31Speaker 4: Is lost, right, you know.
- 54:34Speaker 6: But it's a team effort.
- 54:36Speaker 3: So support the support that accident, that injury, and we'll
- 54:41Speaker 3: take that hell to day that that's the easiest way
- 54:45Speaker 3: to do it.
- 54:46Speaker 6: Yeah. For the for the health and safety of everybody involved.
- 54:50Speaker 3: Absolutely absolutely absolutely, And I'm telling you, if if I'm
- 54:54Speaker 3: a parent and I see it, if I see my
- 54:56Speaker 3: child laying on the turf, hit to the head, head
- 55:02Speaker 3: hit the ground and he's laying there or she's laying
- 55:05Speaker 3: there if that coach does not take him out of
- 55:10Speaker 3: the game for the rest of the game, and probablyline
- 55:15Speaker 3: I'm coming to the make sure he's sitting on the bench,
- 55:20Speaker 3: or we're going home. I'm gonna take him home. And
- 55:25Speaker 3: and and and we we just have to do we
- 55:27Speaker 3: have to do better in looking at those types of
- 55:31Speaker 3: things and paying attention to them and and not acting
