Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / Lions over Ravens, NFL QB Tiers, Mike Gundy Fired with Matt Postins, Hawkeye talk with John Bohnenkamp
Transcript
- 0:00Good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on a
- 0:02Tuesday hits Des Moines sports station One O 6.3, KX&O and the
- 0:08Iowa Sports Radio Network, wherever you're listening.
- 0:10Glad that you are as we will take you for the next couple of
- 0:13hours. Little breaking news
- 0:14momentarily. We will get into that as there
- 0:17has been a firing in the Big 12 coaching ranks that coming up in
- 0:22just a second. But here's what's coming up on
- 0:23our program. Matt Poston's going to jump in
- 0:26on short notice to talk about the firing Mike Gundy at
- 0:31Oklahoma State. Apparently he is out.
- 0:34There's been no statement from the university as of yet, but
- 0:37all the big name college football writers which everyone
- 0:40pops into your head. First of all, you can bet that
- 0:43he's actually tweeting about this at this time.
- 0:45So it seems like it's legit. Gundy is out.
- 0:47Matt Poston's Heartland College sports on that coming up here in
- 0:50about 20 minutes. And then John Bowen camp, he is
- 0:53at in Iowa City today for the Hawkeye Media Availability
- 0:58Players meeting going on now. We're just wrapping up.
- 1:02We'll talk to John about that. And then Kirk Ference comes on
- 1:05the stage of 1:45. We'll talk to John about what he
- 1:08expects to hear and more importantly, what he expects to
- 1:11see when Indiana pays a visit 2:30 on Saturday afternoon.
- 1:15Looking forward to talking to Matt Snyder's.
- 1:17We will delve back into baseball in the final week of baseball's
- 1:21regular season. Matt Snyder from CBSSports.com,
- 1:25where he opines and writes on Major League Baseball.
- 1:28And they were sticking with that baseball theme, but we're
- 1:30localizing it. Sam Burnaby calling it a career
- 1:33after 4 decades at the helm of the Iowa Cubs, the general
- 1:36manager of the Iowa Cubs. We'll take a look back at some
- 1:39of Sam's career, some of the challenges that he had, maybe
- 1:42some of the his biggest wins, etcetera, etcetera.
- 1:46There was a championship in there, but I'm more so wins.
- 1:48Just the organization, the changes it's been through and
- 1:52where it's at right now. So we'll talk to Sam Burnaby and
- 1:55kind of give him a pat on the back on his way out the doors.
- 1:57He retires after a long and very successful career in downtown
- 2:01Des Moines at the principal park.
- 2:03Trent's plays of the day are coming up.
- 2:05Baseball back in the spotlight tonight.
- 2:07But I guess we begin with the news that just broke within the
- 2:09last 10 minutes. Mike Gundy is out at Oklahoma
- 2:12State. Kind of saw the writing on the
- 2:14wall. Trent, this was a an
- 2:17underachieving team last year and you thought, well, maybe
- 2:20there's it's just a blip. Well, it's not a blip.
- 2:22It carried over to this year. It was one of those situations
- 2:27because there's a lot of different factors that went into
- 2:30this and I think a huge part of it is Mike Gundy is the
- 2:34winningest pro coach in program history, former quarterback.
- 2:38I, I think there's probably a segment of our listenership that
- 2:42doesn't realize how bad Oklahoma State was.
- 2:45And though Les Miles began what Gumby Gundy continued during the
- 2:5180s, almost every year it was Oklahoma State on the bottom.
- 2:57It was as Kansas State ascended, as finally Iowa State started to
- 3:01get their sea legs underneath them.
- 3:03Oklahoma State was the laughing stock of the big gate and the
- 3:07Big 12 in the beginning infancy of that Organism.
- 3:10And then it completely changed. Now, T Boone Pickens was a big
- 3:14part of that and the investments that he made in that program,
- 3:17getting all the shiny objects and everything that you needed
- 3:19when that was important in recruiting.
- 3:21But T Boone died, and it very well could be as simple as that.
- 3:26That at a place in Stillwater where your second fiddle to
- 3:30Oklahoma, in a place where you have to recruit Texas at a high
- 3:34level in order to win. And if you don't have those
- 3:37finances, you can't win at Oklahoma State.
- 3:40No, I think that's all your points.
- 3:42Absolutely valid. I remember when when Texas and
- 3:45Oklahoma, I remember a couple of years ago when they left the
- 3:48conference, remember Oklahoma State was supposed to be the the
- 3:51flag bearer for the conference when it comes to football.
- 3:54Now, Oklahoma State is going to have to carry things on.
- 3:56Well, it hasn't happened, obviously.
- 3:58So though there's been no announcement as to who's going
- 4:01to take over. I imagine whoever that person is
- 4:04is on the staff, a coordinator at some point.
- 4:06I mean, it's, it's difficult. Do they play this week?
- 4:09Are they off this week? Do you know?
- 4:10I think they play because they played Friday.
- 4:13They had the week off the week before, so I'd anticipate that
- 4:15they're playing this weekend. That they are then.
- 4:18And yeah, I'm looking at the Oklahoma State trying to pull up
- 4:21their coaching staff and see if there's any names on that.
- 4:25Place, Arizona. Oh, so they do have off week.
- 4:29No, they don't. They play Baylor.
- 4:30My mistake. They play Baylor.
- 4:31Yes, yes. So assistant coaches seeing if
- 4:34any names pop up like, oh, I've heard of that guy.
- 4:37Yeah, anybody? Todd Granum is their defensive
- 4:40coordinator. Doug Meacham, another guy that's
- 4:43been around, he's their offensive coordinator.
- 4:45So I guess that's probably the easiest place to look, right?
- 4:48A couple of guys that are both experiencing and both have some
- 4:51good things certainly in their past.
- 4:53I think that would be a definitely a way to look at it,
- 4:57trying to look at Meacham, no, no head coaching experience in
- 5:00his career. He's been as a coordinator
- 5:01though for a very long time. That would be a guy that would
- 5:04make sense. And then when look at Grantham,
- 5:06he's been around also a very long time always as a
- 5:10coordinator, though we're a defensive coach.
- 5:13He was there in the beginning infancy of the Beamer Ball era
- 5:16as the defensive coach and defensive line coach with
- 5:19Virginia Tech. And this bounced around a bunch
- 5:21throughout the years. Florida, his most recent kind of
- 5:24big job that he had. Well, and the clothes play them.
- 5:26That's the final game of the regular season.
- 5:29Final game of the regular season for Iowa State.
- 5:33We'll see how it goes, but obviously a lot of football to
- 5:35be played between now and then. Your thoughts on what we watched
- 5:39last night on Monday Night Football and did that change
- 5:41your opinion either way regarding maybe take a longer
- 5:45look at Detroit and maybe we threw some dirt on them
- 5:47prematurely and or the fact that Baltimore still got a really
- 5:52good quarterback, but their defence is just.
- 5:55Awful. Yeah, I think yes and yes, yes
- 5:58and yes to both of them. And as we've talked about with
- 6:00Buffalo and with the defense that porous, are you going to be
- 6:03able to win two, maybe three games to get to a Super Bowl in
- 6:06the rugged AFC? Same question pertains, I think,
- 6:09to Baltimore. I think it does too.
- 6:11And you know, we see how the Chargers are playing at this
- 6:13point and, and the Chiefs, we'll see if they can bounce back and
- 6:15be the Chiefs and you go on and on and so.
- 6:17Let me just say, you brought up the Chiefs, who's got the most
- 6:19complete team in the AFC right now.
- 6:21Would you say the? Chargers.
- 6:22Oh, absolutely. I don't think it's.
- 6:24Particularly because because Mahomes got offensive issue.
- 6:26Well, not he doesn't, but the Chiefs have offensive issues and
- 6:29the two heavy heads at the top, the Bills and the and the
- 6:32Ravens, both of their defenses, are somewhat suspect.
- 6:35I think the charges are absolutely legit on both sides
- 6:37of the ball. In fact, I think Justin
- 6:39Herbert's playing himself into the MVP conversation.
- 6:42But you saw that offensive line struggle.
- 6:44Well, absolutely. They they're they're missing
- 6:47the. Slater, he's out for the year.
- 6:50You flip all over, OK, you're fine, You're fine there.
- 6:52But the rest of the pieces that you're shuffling around, that
- 6:54would be my concern with them. And it goes hand in hand with
- 6:57Herbert. Has he made it through a season
- 6:59completely healthy? Seems like he's always banged.
- 7:01Up always something wrong. And if that offensive line
- 7:03continues to look like it did Sunday against the Broncos,
- 7:06that's concerning. He's.
- 7:07Good. He's going to take a share of
- 7:08hits there's no doubt about. That are the Colts the most
- 7:10complete team it. Probably wasn't Daniel Jones
- 7:17having a healthier He is. Taylor's unbelievable.
- 7:19He can't, he can't tackle. Him.
- 7:20No. Who do they play this week?
- 7:22They've got a salty game this week.
- 7:24It's a a tricky spot. They go to LA.
- 7:27To the Rams, to the Rams and that defense is really good
- 7:30against the run. Let's let's let me let me put
- 7:36the Colts on the back burner till next Monday or Tuesday
- 7:38whenever we get to the NFL. Probably Tuesday, since both the
- 7:41Clones and the Hawks play on the weekend.
- 7:44Colts are in the conversation. Colts are in the conversation.
- 7:47Two teams that are two in one that do not feel like 2 in one
- 7:50teams. The Steelers.
- 7:51Speaking of bad, the. Steelers are not good.
- 7:54And the Jaguars. And the Jaguars are not good.
- 7:56I'm with you. Both of those teams are two in
- 7:58one and it feels like they should be on three.
- 8:01When Trevor Lawrence came out of school and was the first overall
- 8:05pick in the draft, I thought he was Can't miss.
- 8:08I honest to God, if I could have bought stock, if you could make
- 8:11a bet of futures for first ballot Canton, I'd have bought
- 8:14some. No, really, I'd have bought
- 8:15some, I thought. I thought he was an absolute
- 8:17sinch to be a star quarterback in the NFL.
- 8:20It hasn't happened. He hasn't been awful.
- 8:22No, and he had Herb for a while, so that didn't help.
- 8:25But he's got an offensive minded head coach right now.
- 8:29I don't know, look at to be fair, to be fair, who goes out,
- 8:34who goes out of their way to watch the Jags?
- 8:37I mean, if they're if they're not playing the team that you
- 8:40root for or if you're a Jacksonville fan, obviously
- 8:43you're and and you've got options.
- 8:46The likelihood that you're, you know, I'm going to watch the
- 8:48Jags this week. That's just not going to happen,
- 8:51right? It just doesn't happen that way.
- 8:55But I thought Trevor Lawrence was going to be any kind of
- 8:56quarterback in that division. Houston does not look good.
- 8:59Houston is O and three Tennessee is, you know, a a obviously
- 9:05they're they're years before they start to get back into
- 9:08relevance and they can't cover. Good 'cause I've bet them every
- 9:11single week and they're O and three against the spread they
- 9:13can't cover. I hate the Titans.
- 9:15Yeah, you're out on them. All right, let's get Thunder Joe
- 9:18in here. Of course, I'm glad to hear from
- 9:21him with his Oklahoma ties. Hello a Thunder Joe, How are
- 9:23you? Hey, pretty good guys.
- 9:26Let's start with Herbert. We're finally seeing the Herbert
- 9:29that we all thought that we'd see.
- 9:30And I got to give Harbaugh a lot of credit because what he'd do,
- 9:33his very first draft, he drafted him protection, he did.
- 9:38He said this. You know, that's something that
- 9:40obviously the people in Cincinnati haven't figured out.
- 9:43I don't know if they need to watch Kevin Costner's movie on
- 9:45how to draft. I'm not quite sure.
- 9:47But you know, you talk about Oklahoma City being not going to
- 9:51say that the Cowboys being second fiddle to the Sooners.
- 9:53Let's be honest, the Cowboys are second fiddle to cheese fries at
- 9:56Eskimo Joe's in Stillwater. But in all honesty, when Les
- 10:02Miles had that Co Ed problem, all we heard about it at
- 10:05Stillwater was Les Miles, I'm here, I'm here, I'm here, I'm
- 10:09here for the long haul. And then this little Co head,
- 10:11this little Co head, Co head issue came up and he darted.
- 10:15And the best thing Oklahoma State did at the time was was
- 10:17higher than the prodigal son. I'm kind of, I'm kind of shocked
- 10:21he's lasted this long. But then again, I'm kind of
- 10:22shocked that they let him go. It's kind of, I'm not even, I'm
- 10:25not even a cowboy fan. I just know it's like the John
- 10:28Blake thing in Oklahoma, the prodigal son turned goat.
- 10:32Yeah, Fairpoint, Fairpoint, Joe, thanks for the call.
- 10:34Appreciate it and thanks. Yeah, I totally agree with you
- 10:37on the Chargers. Justin Herbert certainly
- 10:39becoming the quarterback. We thought now we still got to
- 10:41do something in the playoffs because he's been really bad
- 10:44when they've got there. But he just, it just, it just
- 10:47feels different, this charge. It feels different to me.
- 10:50They feel buttoned up, they do. They feel confident.
- 10:52They've got a head coach who's got a year under his belt now in
- 10:56that organization, so you feel better about that.
- 10:59They run the ball, obviously they can catch the football way
- 11:01better than they could. And they're three and O in the
- 11:04division. And they're three and O in the
- 11:06division with Chiefs, Raiders and Broncos back-to-back to back
- 11:09weeks. And two of them were on the
- 11:11road. They they never play home games.
- 11:14So even if they don't, I mean it's 6040, maybe 6040 and I'm
- 11:19not sure that that's accurate because the opposing fans, they,
- 11:23they buy that stadium out. As it should, it's a great road
- 11:26trip. It is.
- 11:27I've not been to it yet. Have you been?
- 11:29To so far, no, I don't think you have.
- 11:31Nope, Nope. And I'm not going to follow the
- 11:33bears there anytime soon, so I don't think I'm going to get
- 11:36there. How many Bears fans will be in
- 11:37Vegas this week? Well, that is a great question.
- 11:40There's going to be a ton of them making that trip to Vegas
- 11:43for the Raiders this Sunday afternoon.
- 11:45And this is put up for shut up time.
- 11:48As we talked about last week with Nebraska.
- 11:50Same thing for the Bears. All right, You played a great
- 11:52game against a terrible defense. Get a road victory, get
- 11:55something good. Get those positive vibes you got
- 11:58a week after this because if you fall to one and three, it's
- 12:00over. So now let's see it.
- 12:02Ben Johnson, you're the smartest guy in the room.
- 12:04Sure, let's just not hear it. Let's actually see it and
- 12:08actually beat a very winnable Rd. key.
- 12:11You know when you you mentioned the the Cowboys defense, are you
- 12:13looking to play in Green Bay this week?
- 12:16No, I don't. Don't you think they?
- 12:19Bounce back after that embarrassment, though.
- 12:21I think they will, and I think it's a great spot for it.
- 12:24Is it a good survivor pick? Well, the problem I.
- 12:26Guess that's where I'm going with you.
- 12:28They play on Thanksgiving. I know they do.
- 12:29Who do they have? They're at the Lions, obviously
- 12:31going to be an incredibly difficult.
- 12:32Game. I couldn't use it.
- 12:34I couldn't use that game. But you got to get there, sure.
- 12:36And that's kind of the the 1-2 punch to looking.
- 12:39You're looking forward and you're looking at those games.
- 12:42And with the Black Friday game, that helps because there's.
- 12:44Two games and I'm looking at the team that's playing your team.
- 12:47Bears. Really.
- 12:48Bears go to the Eagles. Oh yeah.
- 12:50On Black Friday? On Black Friday, yeah, that
- 12:53would make a whole lot of sense. But can you survive to that
- 12:56point? Well.
- 12:56That's the goal. Keeping the Eagles in your back
- 12:58pocket because you go through that means some week you're
- 13:01gonna have to take maybe Carolina.
- 13:03You're gonna have to take, you know, you're gonna have, you're
- 13:05gonna have to take a bad team at some point if you're trying to
- 13:08keep. I don't want to use anybody in
- 13:10the Packers Alliance, Don't want to use the Chiefs because they
- 13:13have the Cowboys. You don't want to use the Ravens
- 13:17because. Well, flip forward to go to
- 13:19Christmas Day. Have you seen the Christmas Day
- 13:21games? I have.
- 13:22I can't remember them off the top of my head.
- 13:23Let me find them here. Christmas Day games are
- 13:26unbelievably difficult. I might use Denver.
- 13:30Denver is on the road to Kansas City.
- 13:32That's the same thing. Well, if you use Kansas City
- 13:34Thanksgiving, you wouldn't have them then at home right on
- 13:37Christmas. You like Detroit at Minnesota?
- 13:40Coin flip? Yeah.
- 13:41Dollars at Washington. I think maybe the Commanders
- 13:44might be the play. That might be the time to save
- 13:46the commanders, but I can't. You're talking about getting to.
- 13:49Got to get to Christmas. Week 17, which is what week?
- 13:52It's a long ways to go. It is, it's it makes it so fun,
- 13:57so difficult. But anyways.
- 14:00But back-to-back to Monday Night Football last night.
- 14:03Yeah, in in particular Jared Goff.
- 14:05Why won't we talk about the best quarterbacks in the league?
- 14:08Or I'll put it this way, do you think he's one of the top
- 14:10quarterbacks in the league? I do.
- 14:12What do you consider top Top. 7-8 There's more than five.
- 14:17There's more than 5 quarterbacks now.
- 14:19He's not in the top five. I don't think so either.
- 14:22Who are your top five? You want Lamar Jackson in there?
- 14:24You want Patrick Mahomes in there?
- 14:27You want Joe Burrow in there? Yes.
- 14:28You want Josh Allen in there? Yes.
- 14:31Did I say Lamar Jackson? You did, Justin.
- 14:35Herbert let's I'd take Jalen Hurts.
- 14:39You want Jalen Hurts? OK, Nobody.
- 14:43Nobody in the normal. We're talking about one of them
- 14:45I can't put. Stafford.
- 14:48I have to put him there. I can't put Baker there.
- 14:50Can you? He's close.
- 14:51He's probably in that, maybe in that goth.
- 14:54How about this? You got AB plus team you need to
- 14:57win a road game this week. Who do you want on your team,
- 15:00Baker Mayfield or Jared Goff? Baker Mayfield's a freaking
- 15:04winner. That's who I want.
- 15:07He's a winner. So Goff on my list, He's lower
- 15:10than Baker Mayfield, he's lower than Stafford.
- 15:13Is he lower than Jordan Love? No, you're not there.
- 15:17Yet no, I'm not. So is he a top ten Top.
- 15:21Ten. Yeah, I think even 7 and 8 might
- 15:24be stretching. OK.
- 15:26I, I, I think with this little exercise just did too.
- 15:28It's pretty, pretty, pretty good.
- 15:31The list of quarterbacks in this league.
- 15:32Absolutely. And we didn't really bring up
- 15:34any young ones or anything like that.
- 15:35Didn't bring up Doc Prescott. Nope, he didn't make the cut.
- 15:40Tyler Murray, Jayla Daniels. Yeah.
- 15:44There's one, yeah, there's one that's on the list.
- 15:46Would you rather have a healthy Daniels or golf for your team
- 15:49for this week? Daniels Yeah.
- 15:53The way he runs the weapon that he is.
- 15:56Because the weapons that Detroit still has, those guys didn't
- 15:59leave offensive line's new They were figuring it out in Week 1,
- 16:03their demise greatly exaggerated.
- 16:05And you know, a quarterback, we're not talking about
- 16:08quarterback that I was talking about the start of the show that
- 16:10I would have bought stock in. Trevor, I thought it was a
- 16:14cinch. I thought he was a mortal lock
- 16:16to be a star in this league and. He is at best top half 1516.
- 16:22Would you rather have him or Bo Nicks?
- 16:24Oh, him. Not me.
- 16:26What? You're out, Bo Nicks, you're
- 16:29back in. Yeah, I did watch.
- 16:31Yeah, he was bad on Sunday. He was really bad on.
- 16:33Sunday and he came in the week before and talked about how bad
- 16:35he was. He had a good Week 2 trends.
- 16:37Oh, week two. Week 1 was OK.
- 16:39One in three. So it's an odd even type of
- 16:41thing. So this is Week 4 now back.
- 16:43You know, in all seriousness, it comes to Denver.
- 16:45Is Denver a lookout for their survivor this week?
- 16:48Yes, against Cincinnati Broncos going to lose three straight
- 16:51games. I don't think so.
- 16:52I don't. Think so either.
- 16:54Yeah, definitely on my list for this week and and when you're
- 16:56going through and handicapping and looking at at the matchups
- 16:59and who's going to be available, those kind of things.
- 17:02Yeah, I definitely think that you have to have Denver on your
- 17:04list. I'm on top of it.
- 17:06You get to Monday night. Now the problem is I used him in
- 17:08Week 1. Oh, you did you.
- 17:11Can only use the team once. Oh, so you're out?
- 17:14So who you leaning? Toward nobody yet.
- 17:17I haven't. I haven't done, no, I haven't
- 17:18done that kind of work yet of zeroing in on those kind of
- 17:21things. One final thing on your boy Bo
- 17:24Nicks. So you weren't subscribing to my
- 17:26theory this summer when he told me he's going to be, you know, a
- 17:30top five? Quarterback.
- 17:30No, I didn't say top five, he said.
- 17:32He's going to be great. Yes.
- 17:34And I told you, my concern with him, great coach, great
- 17:39quarterback Guru and Sean Payton that I didn't see upside that
- 17:44yes, he's going to get better with more experience, but he was
- 17:47already incredibly experienced coming in.
- 17:49He played so many college games. He did that.
- 17:51There isn't the growth that you see from other guys and kind of
- 17:54what you saw last year at the best of it in the back half of
- 17:57the year. It's kind of what you're going
- 17:58to get is that. That's what we've got so far
- 18:00this. Year.
- 18:01Is that kind of a fairway maybe to look at this so far that
- 18:04there just isn't the growth potential of Bo Nicks?
- 18:07So are you concerned of that quarterback class?
- 18:12Obviously, Dan, I think Williams is going to be fine.
- 18:15I think you'd rather have Daniels if you had, if you
- 18:18redraft that class, the six that went in the 1st 12 picks.
- 18:21Yeah, Daniels. Yes, then.
- 18:26Williams. OK.
- 18:31May or Nicks. Did both were what?
- 18:37Pennex was awful. Pennex was awful, McCarthy looks
- 18:39like. Yeah, it's difficult.
- 18:42I I don't think that there's a right answer on that.
- 18:45I can't say definitively one way.
- 18:46The two that went first and second, then it's a question
- 18:49mark beside the others. And even Caleb, he's clearly
- 18:52ahead of those other guys he feels like right now.
- 18:54He is. But for a number one pick,
- 18:57there's quarterback class not shaping up to be 183.
- 19:00Yeah, it's not, not at this point, No.
- 19:02All right, take your time out. We are going to have Matt
- 19:05Postings in here. We'll pick his brain or what he
- 19:07thinks, who he thinks may be next.
- 19:09Obviously, we'll talk a little bit about the games this past
- 19:12weekend with post insurance. He's coming up next, John
- 19:14Bowencamp. He's sequestered in Iowa City
- 19:17listening to Hawkeye players before he hears from Kirk
- 19:19Ference. Matt Snyder on baseball.
- 19:21And Sam Burnaby, 4 decades at the helm as the general manager
- 19:25of the Iowa Cubs, announced his retirement on Sunday.
- 19:27He will join us at 1:30. Miller and Condon underway on a
- 19:30Tuesday. Thanks for being with us on the
- 19:32Iowa Sports Radio Network. Hi, coming up on 1230.
- 19:35Miller and Condon, welcome back. I was Sports Radio Network.
- 19:41What's this all about? Blake Shelton, Oklahoma boy, OH.
- 19:43Is he OK? Didn't know.
- 19:45All red about the state. Who's he married to?
- 19:50Uh huh. Misses Shelton.
- 19:52Gwen Stefani, is that who it is? OK, let's get Matt Postons in
- 19:56here from Heartland College Sports on the Mike Gundy
- 19:59dismissal. No pop culture here.
- 20:01No, absolutely not, although there is a little pop culture
- 20:05just in the SEC. So I was screaming into my
- 20:08phone. Gwen Stefan.
- 20:09Did you have that out, boy? I should have pumped put pushed
- 20:12you on the air earlier. Well get to the SEC later.
- 20:16Is that story just unbelievable? But obviously Mike Gundy
- 20:21unbelievable, took this program to the highest of the highest.
- 20:25Jeff Woody of all people. I had something to say about
- 20:28that on a Friday night. And Ames on ESPN as he scored
- 20:32the winning touchdown to prevent Oklahoma State from taking that
- 20:35next step, as we recall. But nonetheless, it was there a
- 20:39long time. But it's just it's just hit rock
- 20:42bottom, has it not? Matt Poston's.
- 20:45Yeah, I think that's where it is right now.
- 20:47I mean, I remember covering their Big 12 championship game
- 20:50against Baylor a few years ago and I remember thinking to
- 20:52myself, okay, with Texas and Oklahoma leaving the league,
- 20:55this leaves a void for a program like Oklahoma State, Phil,
- 20:58because they've been good for a long time and they've got a
- 21:00really good head coach in Mike Gundy.
- 21:03And I think the biggest issues they've had has been with the
- 21:05transfer portal. They simply have not adjusted to
- 21:08that era of college football. I think Gundy to some degree has
- 21:12been reticent to do it to really buy into bringing in talent and
- 21:16finding ways to retain talent. I think NIL has something to do
- 21:19with that as well. When you consider that when you
- 21:22hear about NIL in the Big 12, you hear a lot about Texas Tech,
- 21:25Iowa State, Arizona State, TCU and other programs, you don't
- 21:29care a lot about that at Oklahoma State.
- 21:32And I think that's a factor in it too.
- 21:34And really, if you look at their last two years, the talent at
- 21:37the quarterback position just has not been there.
- 21:39And no matter how good, you know, a player like Holly Gordon
- 21:43is or how much they've bought into the running game the last
- 21:46few years with Chubba Hubbard, they they simply have not had
- 21:49good quarterback play. And for Mike Bendy team, that
- 21:52really can be the death knells of the season.
- 21:54And I, I think this is just, you know, them going them, them
- 21:57losing to Tulsa at home on Friday, that just told me how
- 22:00hard a season this was going to be.
- 22:02So for them to make the decision now, I think it's an
- 22:05acknowledgement on their part that the program needs a
- 22:07complete reset. They need a fresh voice.
- 22:09They need a new voice, which is exactly what they needed when
- 22:12they hired Gundy 20 years ago. So everything is cyclical in
- 22:16this business. Very few coaches get the
- 22:18opportunity to go out on their own terms.
- 22:20And you know, my Gundy is just another one on the list.
- 22:23T Boone Pickens not with us any longer.
- 22:26His money, a lot of it, was left to Oklahoma State and the
- 22:28athletic department, much to the chagrino many people in academia
- 22:32at the time. But that aside, do we have any
- 22:36relatives, any benefactors, any other people willing to step up
- 22:40to the plate? Because in today's era, if T
- 22:42Boone was around, they might be like Texas.
- 22:45Tech. I mean, they might be spending
- 22:46at that kind of level. Do we know kind of the family
- 22:49dynamics and coupled with that, the booster backing of Oklahoma
- 22:53State and what they can be in this new era?
- 22:56Yeah, that's an interesting question and I don't have a good
- 22:58answer to that, but I do have a couple of points that I was
- 23:00actually thinking about before I got on the air.
- 23:02First, does this free up boosters to be more involved in
- 23:06doing that? You know, Gandhi has so been so
- 23:09omnipresent at that program for the past 10 years that unlike
- 23:14most coaches in the Big 12, he's had a lot of autonomy and a lot
- 23:17of control over how his program is run, how it connects with
- 23:20other programs on campus, how it connects with boosters and that
- 23:22kind of thing. And I think some of that has
- 23:24been to the chagrin of other boosters there on campus.
- 23:26So I'm wondering if his dismissal maybe freeze some
- 23:30folks up that maybe were reticent to be all in with the
- 23:34football program because of him and they'll be more present with
- 23:37a new head coach. And also, you know, this should
- 23:41be a clear end call to booster family at Oklahoma State that
- 23:45you've got to have the money to compete.
- 23:46The revenue sharing is fine, that's great.
- 23:49But because of the adjustments they've made from the house
- 23:53ruling with the CSC, where basically the collectives can
- 23:56now still kind of do what they want with the reason you now
- 24:00have an opportunity to offer sweeteners on top of the revenue
- 24:03sharing. So this this is kind of, this
- 24:06isn't just Gundy losing his job. I think this is a shot across
- 24:09the bow to the rest of the Oklahoma State family from the
- 24:11athletic department saying, hey, if we bring in a new head coach,
- 24:14we're going to need your support.
- 24:16And because the new head coach, whoever that may be, is going to
- 24:18have a lot of questions about NIL transfer portal and all that
- 24:22other stuff. And if they don't feel like
- 24:23they're going to be adequately supported by the community,
- 24:25they're not going to come. That's an excellent point, Matt
- 24:28Postons. I never even thought of it that
- 24:29way because Boone Pickens and his money and what he did would
- 24:32over shadow everybody, right. So if he's not getting they're
- 24:35not getting that recognition or that support or that pat on the
- 24:38back and thanks you for doing this for our school type of
- 24:41thing. And it's always going to one
- 24:42guy, the guy that the stadium's named after.
- 24:45Maybe they're just keeping their, you know, checkbook
- 24:47closed. You still write checks,
- 24:48Whatever, you got my point, right?
- 24:50It's this, this might be this might be a wake up call in a way
- 24:54for those people to, you know, to get more involved because
- 24:57Mike Gundy and the connection to PT Boone is gone.
- 25:02Yeah. And and you know, when you think
- 25:03about the the move that Texas made a few years ago when they
- 25:07fired Matt Wells and eventually hired Joey McGuire, that was
- 25:09kind of their wake up call too. I think maybe to a lesser degree
- 25:13because they didn't have a well heeled head coach like Gundy.
- 25:16But you know, sometimes when you let a head coach go, it's an
- 25:20opportunity for you to acknowledge the problems that
- 25:22you're having in your program and in your athletic department.
- 25:25To kind of right the ship and get the right next to Guy and
- 25:28the head coaching job and give an opportunity to invite
- 25:31everybody in and say, hey, you can be a part of this.
- 25:34We need your help. It's not going to be like it was
- 25:36before where they were walls put up between Gundy and everybody
- 25:39else. This is not an opportunity for
- 25:41everybody to come together and support everyone in the athletic
- 25:44department. It could end up be a good thing,
- 25:47although there's going to be a lot of pain this season.
- 25:48Brooklyn. Give us a few names that would
- 25:52make sense on this one too. That definitely popped up right
- 25:55away. Colin Klein doing a great job
- 25:57down at A&M. Big 12 connections.
- 25:59Barry Odom. That is a good one.
- 26:01Barry Odom, an Oklahoma guy, so obviously connections to the
- 26:04state there and looks Purdue at least on the right path to
- 26:07relevancy after what a shakedown has been the last couple of
- 26:10years there. Any other names that pop up that
- 26:12make sense for Oklahoma State? Well, a couple of other names
- 26:15that have have popped up at least in chaps.
- 26:18You know, Alex Skolish, who was in GA at Oklahoma State, was at
- 26:22Iowa State for a few years. He's doing a really good work at
- 26:25South Florida now. Zach Robinson, a former
- 26:28quarterback of of Mike Grundy, who is now in the NFL, He's the
- 26:32offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons.
- 26:34Those are a few names that have even popped up over the weekend
- 26:37as there's been speculation about his job.
- 26:40If I'm looking at the Group of Five ranks 3 coaches that I
- 26:43think will be connected to this job and be potentially good
- 26:46candidates for this job. Ryan Silverfield at Memphis,
- 26:49he's done great work there over the past decade.
- 26:52John Sumrall at Tulane, if they have another really good season
- 26:55down in New Orleans, he's going to be connected to a host of
- 26:57jobs, you know, even more so than last year with North
- 27:00Carolina. And then Jeff Trailer, the head
- 27:03coach at UTSA, who I think really would prefer to stay in
- 27:07the state of Texas, but Oklahoma State is Texas adjacent to allow
- 27:12him to this is Texas recruiting bona fides within the state.
- 27:15Wouldn't have to go that far away from home.
- 27:18Might be an enticing job for him.
- 27:20But those are the those are the names that I've kind of
- 27:22gravitating toward right now. Yeah.
- 27:24Without knowing what other openings are going to come up,
- 27:27you know, obviously if Florida opens up, that changes the
- 27:29dynamic of some of the candidates out there.
- 27:32But I, I think Oklahoma State should have a good shot at
- 27:35finding a successful young head coach that can come in and, you
- 27:41know, kind of, you know, restructure things that are in
- 27:43Oklahoma State. I don't necessarily think the
- 27:45program needs to be resurrected because, you know, let's face
- 27:48it, Gundy, he did a fantastic job there.
- 27:51He won 170 games. There's no other head coach in
- 27:54that program's history that has won more than 62 games.
- 27:58And that was his loss. Pat Jones back in the 80s and
- 28:0090s, I mean, what Gundy did is what frankly what Matt Campbell
- 28:04is doing at Iowa State right now.
- 28:06When you really think about it, that's what he did for that
- 28:08program. So it's really about getting the
- 28:10right coach that can come in there, re energize the fan base,
- 28:13re energize the program and get them back on the path so they
- 28:16can start, you know, being a bowl team every year and being a
- 28:20contention for the conference championship.
- 28:22Since we've got you, Matt, we certainly appreciate you coming
- 28:24on on short notice to help Trent and I out here.
- 28:26So let's go back to last weekend.
- 28:28Obviously Texas Tech Utah was in the spotlight.
- 28:32What do what do? What do the Red Raiders do going
- 28:34forward now? Do they have a quarterback
- 28:36Controversy will have looks really good as they pulled away
- 28:40in the fourth quarter. What's going to happen in
- 28:42Lubbock with the QB? Yeah, he can really spin it.
- 28:44Candy, that was that was a really solid performance from
- 28:48from him on short notice. I think how much he plays really
- 28:51will depend on Baron's health. I don't think he's going to lose
- 28:53his job over this. I think they're going to be
- 28:56tracking his health throughout the week in the weeks ahead.
- 29:00I think the good news for Texas Tech is, you know, now, you
- 29:03know, you have a guy you can rely on if Barry Morton can't
- 29:05go. And I'm not sure they had
- 29:06necessarily had that in their toolbox last year.
- 29:09But I mean, that defense, that defense sure as heck looked like
- 29:13the defense that Texas Tech has been trying to put together for
- 29:16a decade on Saturday against Utah.
- 29:18If that, if that defense plays at that level the rest of the
- 29:23season, they're going to be in Arlington.
- 29:25Forget about it. They're there.
- 29:27I mean, that defense was just stellar.
- 29:29I mean, every investment they made in the transfer portal, at
- 29:32least in that one game, it showed that it could pay off.
- 29:35And I just was really impressed that that might be the best
- 29:40defensive performance I've ever seen from the Texas Tech
- 29:42defense, regardless of the era, that they were that good.
- 29:46Matt Poston's Heartland College Sports Matt, appreciate the
- 29:48relationship we have with you. We do that you come on at short
- 29:51notice here. Thank you for doing this.
- 29:53We will talk to you down on the road.
- 29:54Thank you, Matt Posens. All right.
- 29:56Thanks guys. Good.
- 29:57To talk to you, Matt Postens, Heartland College sports as we
- 29:59check in on the Big 12 and Mike Gundy, the end of an era in
- 30:03Stillwater. Miller Condon back with John
- 30:04blown camp off to Iowa City. Next it's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 30:07Network. I'm Miller Condon.
- 30:10Welcome back 12:45 Phil Collins so good, right?
- 30:13Sad to see what the illness is doing to his body and to his
- 30:16life. Anyways, John Boenkamp going to
- 30:19join us. In fact, he's joining us right
- 30:21now, final week of baseball's regular season.
- 30:23I'm not sure we'll have time to talk about those Los Angeles
- 30:27Dodgers. Maybe next week, John.
- 30:29Listen, it should be the topic of.
- 30:30It should be the topic of conversation of the whole show.
- 30:33No, we, we want to keep an audience here in the Iowa Sports
- 30:37Radio Network. Yeah.
- 30:38OK, alright. But I do but but my betting
- 30:41portfolio does hope that they do have that proverbial on off
- 30:44switch because they can hit on anytime now.
- 30:47Anyways, let's talk about the Hawks.
- 30:49Obviously, John, the the Hoosiers going to be an
- 30:53incredibly difficult game for Iowa.
- 30:56Look, we've seen good teams in the past come into Kinnock a lot
- 30:59of times, usually under the lights.
- 31:00Won't be the case this this Saturday, 2:30 kick off.
- 31:04But a tough hill to climb for the Hawks.
- 31:06The Hoosiers and coach Kurt Signetti look absolutely legit.
- 31:12That yeah, the last week's game is Illinois proved that.
- 31:15I mean, that's because that's a pretty good Illinois team that
- 31:17just went in there and flopped and and Indiana took advantage
- 31:21of it and and really dominated them.
- 31:23This is a big game for Iowa. I mean, this sets up October and
- 31:28it's like you don't want to lose.
- 31:29You don't want to lose this game because if you do, that really
- 31:32puts a lot of pressure on what comes up here in the next month.
- 31:36You win this game. It sets up, you know, OK, now
- 31:38you got a chance to maybe make a run, maybe get to the playoffs,
- 31:42who knows? But that's, you know, this is
- 31:44going to be a really difficult team that, you know, we, we've
- 31:47been, we, when we looked at the schedule, the beginning of the
- 31:50year, you like Penn State's coming in, OK, they're, they're
- 31:52going to be really good. Or this is, this is probably
- 31:55going to be the toughest of the three.
- 31:56When you start to think about or, or why I should say #2
- 31:59because I think Penn State will be the toughest.
- 32:01But, but I mean, this is a really, really good Indiana team
- 32:04again. And I mean, you still got Oregon
- 32:07on there. You got a road trip to USC that
- 32:09can score with anybody, John. I will win a game where they had
- 32:13to score and the defense struggled mightily in the first
- 32:15half and they had to not eke out a win and win it in a slugfest.
- 32:19They had to win in a bit of a shootout and they were able to
- 32:22do that. Is it a sign of Rutgers defense
- 32:25is really bad or this team is built differently?
- 32:27That if there are other games, and I think there's going to be
- 32:30this year that they're going to have to win scoring 273138
- 32:33points like they did Friday, that they're capable of doing
- 32:36that now as the opponents and the defenses get a little bit
- 32:39better. Yeah, because because if you
- 32:41look at that game, I mean, like you said, Rutgers, you know who
- 32:45was able to move well, especially in the first half
- 32:47Iowa counter that because because I mean in the past those
- 32:50have been games have been like 21 seven at halftime and then
- 32:53you really scram this time. I mean it's you know, it's a tie
- 32:56game and I know they're playing really well and then the
- 32:59second-half the defense played a lot better offense did all the
- 33:02things done. I think this offense really came
- 33:04vague over the weekend on Friday and, and I and I think that this
- 33:08is this is a really good group that just kind of all of a
- 33:11sudden the light switch came on with them.
- 33:14And you know, I've been, I've been on the Mark Gronowski
- 33:17bandwagon since he got here. I know he struggled in those
- 33:21first couple of games that you could see the other night.
- 33:23This is why they got him the the plays he made the other night.
- 33:27This is why they got him. And you know, and I always I'm
- 33:31I'm a big fan of the, you know, the, the, the theory of trust
- 33:34the resume and I trust the rest the resume of him in his career.
- 33:39And then you can see that in the way he played the other night.
- 33:41This is the guy that knows how to win game and he won.
- 33:45He he made a big part of winning that game the other night.
- 33:47Huge. Let's see what happens.
- 33:49Yeah. And so and so, I mean, so that
- 33:51he's going to have to be a big key on Saturday.
- 33:54And so I to get a game like that, it was good for his
- 33:58confidence, good for this offensive offenses confidence
- 34:02and really good just for this team in general.
- 34:05I couldn't agree with you more. His arrows clearly headed in the
- 34:08right direction. You know, to put up, put up
- 34:104741, whatever they scored against UMass is one thing, but
- 34:15to to win a shootout against a a big tenfold on the road, I think
- 34:19this gives you confidence going into a game that in all
- 34:22likelihood, I mean, we know Indiana scores and scores and
- 34:25bunches, right? They're going to have to score a
- 34:27bunch. This isn't going to be a 2117
- 34:30game. You're going to have to score to
- 34:33beat Indiana. And maybe this does build them
- 34:35up a little bit confidence offensive wise because they've
- 34:38put a bunch, a bunch of points on the board in their last two.
- 34:42Yeah, and I mean this this office in in, you know, and I
- 34:45was watching some of the video from the players today and Logan
- 34:48Jones talked about how they're going to have to be very
- 34:50physical with Indiana. And and so I I think this is
- 34:54going to be a real test for that offensive line on on Saturday.
- 34:57And and I mean, if you can, if you can get that group and and I
- 35:01think the other night that group got going a little bit, They did
- 35:04get this now more confident, yes.
- 35:06And even if you can get them now, even with more confidence
- 35:09and play the way I mean, those some of those offensive lines in
- 35:12the past to play, I think this this is going to be a really
- 35:15good test for them and, and, and it's going to be a really key
- 35:18part of that game on that on Saturday.
- 35:20So Mendoza was so good on Saturday night against Illinois,
- 35:23but he also, when you get him rattled, certainly at Cal and
- 35:27even earlier this year, game one against Old Dominion, he had
- 35:29stretches and that's kind of been the knock against him.
- 35:31When it goes off, it can go off the rails quickly.
- 35:34What is Phil Parker dial up? We saw them go a lot more blitz
- 35:37heavy in the second-half, bringing a lot more pressure.
- 35:40What do you think? I think the game plan is
- 35:41defensively to try to get Mendoza off it and he stopped
- 35:44the run. That RPO game certainly changes
- 35:46a whole lot. More difficult circumstances
- 35:48here for Parker. What's the game plan?
- 35:51I think it's a lot of what you saw in the second-half the other
- 35:53night and I I do think you have to go after.
- 35:56Him. You.
- 35:57Have to pressure him. Yep, you've got it.
- 35:59You've got to put pressure on him and, and, and because,
- 36:02because you've got to make him get off, you know, get it, get
- 36:05out of rhythm because you hadn't get into rhythm against the way
- 36:08the way Iowa secondary has played at times this year.
- 36:11I don't think you want him to get going.
- 36:13And so I think you're going to see a lot of pressure on him
- 36:16early. And, and if you can do that
- 36:19instead an early tone, that kind of sets them back a little bit.
- 36:23And so I, I think that's, we're going to learn a lot about this
- 36:26game. You're going to see it very
- 36:27early in the game on Saturday. I think we'll know a lot about
- 36:31how that game is going to trend in just the way Iowa's offense
- 36:34dominates the frontline and the way Iowa's defense, if they can
- 36:37get to him and, and, and make some plays, that may make a
- 36:41difference in this game. I'm anxious to know, John, and I
- 36:43hope it comes up and you guys have got Ference here in what,
- 36:4545 minute, maybe 50, but just under an hour you'll get
- 36:48Ference. I don't think Kamari Moulton was
- 36:51going to going into the Rutgers game.
- 36:52I don't think anyone thought, yes, he's going to play, but
- 36:56he's not going to lead the team in carries.
- 36:58I was and I understand why. I mean, Patterson was was banged
- 37:01up and he may, may or may not be able to go on Saturday against
- 37:05Indiana. But I'm wondering, with the
- 37:07workload that Moulton was forced to take on, wondering, wondering
- 37:10how he came out of the game in Piscataway and how he'll be
- 37:14just, if the, you know, any lingering effect, kind of sore
- 37:17after missing some time and fine and getting back into action,
- 37:20Wonder how that'll go. I'm curious about that too,
- 37:23because he's going to be a big part of this offense.
- 37:26If I mean, because they're going to want to control the ball.
- 37:28They don't want to get into the shootout, but they're going to
- 37:30want to control the ball and again, go back to the offensive
- 37:33line part of it. If they can get that running
- 37:35game going that and just control the ball, that really tilts the
- 37:39game in in Iowa's favor. So he's going to have to have a
- 37:42big game and he's going to have to stay healthy this whole year,
- 37:45you know, because I do think, I mean, this is a really good
- 37:47running backroom. But I think he's the guy that
- 37:50they've really been counting on. And so I think you want to get
- 37:53him going now after Fridays, and you want to get him going and
- 37:57get him back into the rhythm because you're going to need him
- 38:00this year. John, you are amongst the group
- 38:02of you weirdos in the press that are watching long snappers,
- 38:07things like that. Something's been off in the
- 38:10mechanisms of the kicking unit really throughout the season.
- 38:13We're seeing Stevens missed kick.
- 38:14He missed his kick as bad as he has since two years ago last
- 38:18week against Rutgers. I have the sneaking suspicion
- 38:21has something to do with the the new long snapper that came in
- 38:24from BC. Have you seen anything?
- 38:26Because I know you you do watch this stuff.
- 38:28Have you seen anything mechanically, anything happening
- 38:30there in the field goal kicking unit?
- 38:33No, but it is a concern. I mean, I, I think, I mean, I
- 38:36mean, because, I mean, you looked at, you know, you look at
- 38:38the way Drew Stevens played last year and, and, and the way they
- 38:41talked about him, you know, in this in, in August, you know,
- 38:44that, that he had really kind of, you know, his was showing a
- 38:47lot more consistency in practice and was doing a lot of things.
- 38:51And, and he's, he's been good. And then he has been not so good
- 38:54this year. And so in a game like this on
- 38:57Saturday, he's going to have to be good.
- 38:58I don't think, you know, you, you, there may be sometimes when
- 39:01you have to settle for a field goal and you can't give up this
- 39:04point. And so they're going to have to,
- 39:06they're going to have to get that thing kind of clicking, you
- 39:10know, for them. And again, your punting game is
- 39:12going to have to pin them back. The special teams is going to
- 39:15play a big I mean, every every side of the ball is going to
- 39:19make a difference in this game. But special teams could, could
- 39:22end up, you know, if you missed a kick that can, that can turn
- 39:25out to be really big at the end. No doubt.
- 39:27John Bowen Camp, Associated Press.
- 39:29I would call it shoops.com. That's coming up.
