Transcript
- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is, Wednesday, it's the
- 0:152nd of October and here we are, ready to keep on doing what we
- 0:19do every day, reading a chapter of God's word on this day, the
- 0:24International Non Violence Day. Yep, today is actually Mahatma
- 0:29Gandhi's birthday. Happy birthday Gandhi, although
- 0:32it's a bit late for him. But today we celebrate and
- 0:35remember the incredible work that he did, not raising a fist,
- 0:39not inciting violence by bringing about change through
- 0:43dedication, through discernment, through presence, through non
- 0:47violence. And we have an incredible God
- 0:50who just in the same way believes about bringing change
- 0:54by transforming people's hearts. 1 by 1 and well, this story that
- 0:59we're reading is the perfect example of that.
- 1:02As their enemies try to come against them, rather than
- 1:05fighting them off, they just buy their time.
- 1:08They wait for God to transform the hearts of those with the
- 1:11authority so that they can continue to do God's work.
- 1:15Yes, certainly Gandhi does not have a monopoly on non violence.
- 1:20We worship a God of restoration and a God of wholeness, so let
- 1:24us hear the story of that God reaching out to help his people
- 1:29rebuild their homeland after their time in exile.
- 1:32As we read together Ezra chapter 6 soaking, Darius issued orders
- 1:46that a search be made in the Babylonian archives, which were
- 1:50stored in the treasury. But it was at the fortress of
- 1:53Ecbatana in the province of Media that a scroll was found.
- 1:57This is what it said. Memorandum In the first year of
- 2:02King Cyrus's reign, a decree was sent out concerning the Temple
- 2:06of God at Jerusalem. Let the Temple be rebuilt on the
- 2:10site where the Jews used to offer their sacrifices using the
- 2:14original foundations. It's height will be 90 feet and
- 2:18it's width will be 90 feet. Every three layers of specially
- 2:22prepared stones will be topped by a layer of timber.
- 2:26All expenses will be paid by the royal treasury.
- 2:29Furthermore, the gold and silver cups which were taken to Babylon
- 2:33by Nebuchadnezzar from the temple of God in Jerusalem must
- 2:37be returned to Jerusalem and put back where they belong.
- 2:42Let them be taken back to the temple of God.
- 2:45So King Darius sent this message.
- 2:48Now, therefore, Tatanai, governor of the province West of
- 2:52the Euphrates River, and Shetha, Bozanay and your colleagues and
- 2:57other officials West of the Euphrates River, stay away from
- 3:01there. Do not disturb the construction
- 3:04of the Temple of God. Let it be rebuilt on its
- 3:07original site, and do not hinder the governor of Judah and the
- 3:12elders of the Jews and their work.
- 3:15Moreover, I hereby decree that you are to help these elders of
- 3:20the Jews as they rebuild this Temple of God.
- 3:23You must pay the full construction costs without delay
- 3:27from my taxes collected in the province West of the Euphrates
- 3:30River, so that the work will not be interrupted.
- 3:35Give the priests in Jerusalem whatever is needed in the way of
- 3:38young bulls, Rams and male lambs for the burnt offerings
- 3:42presented to the God of heaven, and without fail, provide them
- 3:46with as much wheat, salt, wine and olive oil as they need each
- 3:51day. Then they will be able to offer
- 3:54acceptable sacrifices to the God of heaven and pray for the
- 3:58welfare of the king and his sons.
- 4:02Those who violate this decree in any way will have a beam pulled
- 4:07from their house. Then they will be lifted up and
- 4:10impaled on it, and their house will be reduced to a pile of
- 4:14rubble. May the God who has chosen the
- 4:17city of Jerusalem as the place to honour his name, destroy any
- 4:22king or nation that violates this command and destroys this
- 4:27temple. I, Darius, have issued this
- 4:31decree. Let it be obeyed with all
- 4:34diligence. Tatanai, governor of the
- 4:39province West of the Euphrates River, and Shetha, Bozani and
- 4:43their colleagues complied at once with the command of King
- 4:46Darius. So the Jewish elders continued
- 4:49their work, and they were greatly encouraged by the
- 4:52preaching of the prophets Haggai and Zechariah, son of Ido.
- 4:57The temple was finally finished as had been commanded by the God
- 5:01of Israel and decreed by Cyrus, Darius and Artaxerxes, the kings
- 5:08of Persia. The Temple was completed on
- 5:11March 12th during the 6th year of King Darius reign.
- 5:15The Temple of God was then dedicated with great joy by the
- 5:19people of Israel, the priests, the Levites and the rest of the
- 5:23people who had returned from exile.
- 5:26During the dedication ceremony for the Temple of God, 100 young
- 5:30bulls, 200 Rams and 400 male lambs were sacrificed and 12
- 5:36male goats were presented as a sin offering for the 12 tribes
- 5:40of Israel. Then the priests and Levites
- 5:43were divided into the various divisions to serve at the Temple
- 5:47of God in Jerusalem as prescribed in the Book of Moses.
- 5:51On April 21st, the returned exiles celebrated Passover.
- 5:57The priests and Levites had purified themselves and were
- 6:00ceremonially clean. So they slaughtered the Passover
- 6:04lamb for all the returned exiles, for their fellow priests
- 6:08and for themselves. The Passover meal was eaten by
- 6:12the people of Israel who had returned from exile, and by the
- 6:16others in the land who had turned from their corrupt
- 6:18practises to worship the Lord, the God of Israel.
- 6:22Then they celebrated the Festival of Unleavened Bread for
- 6:26seven days. There was great joy throughout
- 6:30the land because the Lord had caused the king of Assyria to be
- 6:34favourable to them, so that he helped them to rebuild the
- 6:38temple of God, the God of Israel, our Father.
- 6:52You are the God, the God not just of us, the God not just of
- 6:56your people, but the God of all. You rule all people, you rule
- 7:02all parts of our world, and in fact, you rule every corner of
- 7:06our universe. And Lord, still, somehow you
- 7:11manage to be this intimate God who loves us and is present to
- 7:16each of us right now, here today, and at the same time, the
- 7:22most magnificent, enormous God of the universe.
- 7:27We just cannot wrap our heads around this reality, but we know
- 7:30it's true. And we see that here in today's
- 7:33reading, that you are not only the God of us, your people, but
- 7:38the God of everything. And so we worship you with the
- 7:41greatest reverence that our humanity can muster, to say that
- 7:46you are holy and supreme above all else.
- 7:50And we love you and we worship you.
- 7:54And we want nothing more than to stand in all of you with our
- 7:58arms raised high, with you, our precious and eternal God before
- 8:03us. So we worship you and pray all
- 8:06of these things in the name of your dear Son Jesus, Amen.
