- 0:26study God's Word. Amen okay.
- 0:34We are going to ultimately be in the book of Esther Chapter 4 and
- 0:42by way of introduction. So I didn't grow up a reader and
- 0:48I I think I read a couple books in high school.
- 0:50I I don't really remember them, but it was in college that I got
- 0:55hooked on reading and the first book that I read.
- 0:57Was The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien. And I couldn't stop.
- 1:02And soon as I was done with The Hobbit, I picked up The Lord of
- 1:05the Rings and, you know, did the trilogy there.
- 1:07And then when I got to the end of the last book, I remember I
- 1:10like took two weeks to finish because I just didn't want the
- 1:13story to end. And after finishing reading
- 1:18tokens, this, you know, this world of Middle Earth, I was
- 1:21blown away by this guy. I'm like, who is this JRR token?
- 1:26Like who was he? Where did this genius come from?
- 1:29This man who created Middle Earth with all of its heroes and
- 1:33villains. He even created like for each of
- 1:36the people groups and Lord of the Rings.
- 1:38Like for the elves he created a Latin like language, but he
- 1:42created language for the dwarves, he created like this
- 1:45Germanic type language. For the Valorin he created the
- 1:49Semitic language. So this guy was detailed and I'm
- 1:53like, how did he pull it off? And so I wanted to know more
- 1:56about him. How did he bring this masterful
- 2:00creation of his to completion? And then after some digging, I
- 2:04discovered that he was part of this literary group called the
- 2:08Inklings. And imagine, like, you know,
- 2:10kind of the ink pot with the old pen.
- 2:12So he's part of this group called the Inklings.
- 2:15And it was this group of men that would basically get
- 2:18together, and they would read some of the literary works that
- 2:21they were working on. Right?
- 2:22And they would discuss them together.
- 2:24Well, lo and behold, one of the members of the Inklings was CS
- 2:28Lewis. And so CS Lewis proves to be a
- 2:31great encouragement to Token. And Token was a perfectionist.
- 2:37He was very detailed and he's creating language languages for
- 2:40goodness sake, right? And so he would get stuck.
- 2:43He would get stuck in the details in minutiae of you know
- 2:47languages or the subplots of the story that he was trying to
- 2:52unfold. And so he needed encouragement.
- 2:55And CS Lewis provided that encouragement.
- 2:57Not to mention that while Token was writing World War Two was
- 3:00beginning. And so there really was for
- 3:02Token this idea of like, am I going to finish, is this going
- 3:07to get done? He that was a real wonder for
- 3:10him. And so he end up he ended up
- 3:18getting this request from the Dublin Post or the Dublin
- 3:21Review. And they were requesting short
- 3:23stories. So Jr.
- 3:25Tolkien submitted a little short story and I would encourage you
- 3:30to print it out. It's like 10 pages PDF.
- 3:32It's free leaf by niggle, NIGGLE.
- 3:37So he writes this little short story leaf by niggle.
- 3:40And the word niggle means to work in a fiddling or
- 3:44ineffective way to spend time unnecessarily on petty details.
- 3:49And niggle was token himself. This perfectionist who was prone
- 3:54to worry, who was prone to procrastination.
- 3:58And so I just want to read to you the first few paragraphs of
- 4:02his opening and leaf by niggle. And here's what it says.
- 4:06There was once a little man called Niggle who had a long
- 4:10journey to make. He did not want to go.
- 4:12Indeed, the whole idea was distasteful.
- 4:14To him. The journey by the day was, by
- 4:17the way, was death. But he could not get out of it.
- 4:19He knew he would have to start sometime, but he did not hurry
- 4:22with his preparations. Niggle was a painter, not a very
- 4:26successful one, partly because he had many other things to do.
- 4:30Most of these things, he thought, were a nuisance, but he
- 4:32did them fairly well when he could not get out of them, which
- 4:35in his opinion was far too often.
- 4:37The laws in his country were rather strict.
- 4:39There were other hindrances too. For one thing, he was sometimes
- 4:42just idle and did nothing at all.
- 4:44For another, he was kind hearted in a way.
- 4:47You know, the sort of kind heart.
- 4:48It made him uncomfortable more often than it made him do
- 4:51anything. And even when he did anything,
- 4:53it did not prevent him from grumbling, losing his temper and
- 4:56swearing mostly to himself all the time.
- 4:59It did land him in a good many odd jobs for his neighbor Mr.
- 5:03Parrish, a man with a lame leg. Occasionally he even helped
- 5:06other people from further off if they came and asked him to also
- 5:10now and again. He remembered his journey and
- 5:12began to pack a few things in an ineffectual way.
- 5:15At such times he did not paint very much.
- 5:23So here's Niggle, a painter, and as a painter, when you read the
- 5:27story, he is has this vision of painting a tree.
- 5:32But the whole time he's painting this tree, he finds that he's
- 5:35just really, really good at painting a leaf.
- 5:38He's very awesome at just the detail of painting a leaf, but
- 5:42he has this vision of a background, of this tree and of
- 5:45this background in these mountains, right?
- 5:46He kind of gets these visions as he's going along.
- 5:50He wants very deeply to complete this project, but he has some
- 5:53things against him. One, he's coming close to his
- 5:56journey of death, and time is running out.
- 5:59Two, he's kind hearted and distracted by his neighbors who
- 6:03constantly ask for help 3. Even though he has a grand
- 6:07vision of a landscape, he is the kind of painter that paints a
- 6:10leaf better than he can paint a tree or a landscape.
- 6:14When journey does come, he is bummed and realizes that his
- 6:18work will never be done. Later, the town's folk after
- 6:22he's passed on. Begin to clean out niggles,
- 6:25belongings. And as they're cleaning out, as
- 6:27cleaning out as belongings, there's this large crumbling
- 6:30canvas and they find the picture of this perfect leaf on the
- 6:34quarter of the on the corner of the canvas.
- 6:37And as they find this, they didn't take it and they put it
- 6:40in the town museum and they label it leaf by niggle, which
- 6:44very few people ever saw. But this isn't all of the story.
- 6:50Because after death placed on this heavenly bound train and he
- 6:54hears 2 voices talking about him.
- 6:55One severe voice which appears to be judgment, says niggle
- 7:00wasted so much time and accomplished so little.
- 7:03Another gentler voice, which seems to be mercy, says that
- 7:07Niggle chose to sacrifice for others and knew what he was
- 7:11doing. Doing so as a reward.
- 7:13When Niggle approaches the outskirts of the heavenly
- 7:16country, something catches his eye.
- 7:23He runs to it, and there it is. Before him stood the tree.
- 7:29His tree finished its leaves, opening its branches, growing
- 7:34and bending in the wind, bending and looking exactly how niggle
- 7:38had so often felt or guessed, but never could quite capture
- 7:42it. He gazed at the tree and slowly
- 7:44he lifted his arms and he opens them wide and he says it is a
- 7:49gift. The world before death had
- 7:54forgotten nibble almost completely.
- 7:56And there his work was unfinished, only helpful to very
- 8:00few. But in his new country, this
- 8:04permanent, real world, he finds his tree in full detail,
- 8:08complete detail. It's finished.
- 8:10And it wasn't just some whim or fancy that died with him, but
- 8:13now seeing his tree. It was part of true reality,
- 8:17Capital T, Capital R, True reality that would live and be
- 8:20enjoyed forever. And so here's the things, guys.
- 8:24We're all niggle. Every one of us.
- 8:26We all imagine accomplishing things in our lives.
- 8:30And in that we also find that we're largely incapable of
- 8:33fulfilling on them. We get a little bit right.
- 8:36We get a taste. We want to be successful, we
- 8:39want to make a difference. But this is beyond any of any
- 8:42control of our own. And here's the thing, if this
- 8:46life is all there is, you know, and this is for a non believer,
- 8:49right? Like if you don't know Jesus,
- 8:51and if this life is all there is, then all you're left with is
- 8:54cynicism. What else is there?
- 8:57Everything's just going to burn up.
- 8:59Everything you do, everything we do is just going to be
- 9:02forgotten. No one's going to be around to
- 9:04ever even know what happened. We're all forgotten and nothing
- 9:08we do makes a difference. But what does your heart tell
- 9:11you? Right.
- 9:12But God. God and the Bible assures us
- 9:16that there is a true reality, all caps behind this reality
- 9:20that we live in. And the life that we're living
- 9:23is not the only life. There is a heaven, guys, and
- 9:26this is what our Christian faith promises us.
- 9:29So every good word. Everything, even the simplest 1,
- 9:33pursued in response to God's calling upon our lives, matters
- 9:37forever. It goes into eternity with us.
- 9:39And this is the promise of our Christian faith.
- 9:42You know, like we get, we get glorified bodies.
- 9:46The Lord's very interested in the physical creation that he
- 9:49made, and Paul would write to the Corinthians in the Lord.
- 9:53Your labor is not in vain now. When Paul wrote this, he was
- 9:58speaking specifically in terms of ministry.
- 10:00But work, it applies to all of us.
- 10:02It applies to work as well. And because of Tolkien's handle
- 10:06on the Christian truth, he was ready for his work to be just a
- 10:10modest accomplishment in the eyes of the world.
- 10:14But yet what we know now of Tolkien's work is it is, it's
- 10:16incredible. It's a phenomenal work of
- 10:18genius, and it's one of the greatest books, his series of
- 10:21books in the history of the world.
- 10:23But let me say again. It was because of tokens handle
- 10:26on the Christian truth of work that he was ready to be just, he
- 10:32was ready for his work to be just a modest accomplishment in
- 10:35the eyes of the world, right. So we have, we have the gift of
- 10:39hindsight, we can look back. But as he's doing this and
- 10:41dealing with his perfectionism and dealing with creating
- 10:45languages, doing all the stuff that he's doing right, he didn't
- 10:48know what it was, you know, he didn't know what the end result
- 10:50was going to be. He was just working on the work.
- 10:53And that's what he was doing. So what is the Christian truth
- 10:57around work that Tolkien had? It's a truth that once grasped.
- 11:02Once we have the biblical truth of work, it provides us with the
- 11:06passion and confidence to cocreate with our Heavenly
- 11:09Father. It's a truth that's once is once
- 11:12grasped. It provides us the humility to
- 11:16also operate in the sovereignty of God.
- 11:21Because right from the very beginning in Genesis 22, God's
- 11:24working, he works. And in Genesis 22 it says and on
- 11:28the 7th day God ended his work, which he had done.
- 11:34And this view of work that the Bible throws out is very
- 11:37distinct to our Christian faith. Work is intrinsic in the Bible.
- 11:43It's intrinsic to the divine. It's intrinsic to creation.
- 11:47It's intrinsic to human purpose work.
- 11:50And how is it distinct? Other beliefs would say that
- 11:54it's warring cosmic forces. And the result of that, those
- 11:57warring cosmic forces, That's what creates the earth.
- 12:01But in the Bible, creation is not the result of conflict.
- 12:04Why? Because God has no rivals.
- 12:07He's God. There's no conflict.
- 12:09Creation's not an aftermath of a battle, but it's the plan of a
- 12:13Craftsman. So God makes the world as an
- 12:17artist makes a masterpiece. And the cool thing, if you look
- 12:21at that Hebrew word in Genesis about work, it just says it's
- 12:25ordinary human work. It's like, whoa, wait, that's
- 12:27associated with God. Yeah, God's at work, ordinary
- 12:30human work. So let's not miss that work.
- 12:34Isn't some necessary evil for us guys.
- 12:37It's not a necessary evil to just get done.
- 12:40It's not a necessary evil that comes in the picture with the
- 12:43curse or the fall. It's baked in from the very
- 12:46beginning work. And God works for the sheer joy
- 12:51of it. That's what we get to see in
- 12:53Genesis. As Genesis unfolds, we see God
- 12:56delights in his work, He takes care of his work, He stewards
- 13:00it, He provides for his work, and ultimately He commissions
- 13:07each of us to work. He places Adam and Eve in the
- 13:12garden to work and keep it. And he says, hey guys, subdue,
- 13:16subdue. And so subdue indicates that,
- 13:19hey, there's more for you to do. Yes, I've given you this level
- 13:22of development. I've given you creation, but
- 13:25there's more for you to do. And there's this deep untapped
- 13:28potential for all of us to unlock through our work and
- 13:32through our labor still to this day.
- 13:35But work was a part of paradise. Hear that work was a part of
- 13:40paradise. I remember when I was when I
- 13:43first audio booked this, Lisa and I were driving into the
- 13:45mountains and so we had a long drive and I just got to listen
- 13:47to a lot of it once. But I just found myself in
- 13:49tears. I just had such a odd
- 13:51perspective around work. I really was like, work is a
- 13:54necessary evil. Work is all about the curse.
- 13:57It's like, no, no, no work was part of paradise.
- 14:01It's a basic human need for this guy, just like food, just like
- 14:04water, rest, prayer, friendship. Work is food for the for our
- 14:09soul. And God designed us to be in
- 14:13this constant cycle of work and rest, work and rest, work and
- 14:16rest. Why?
- 14:17Because we're made in his image. And even his son Jesus works in
- 14:21John 517. I love this, he says.
- 14:23My father is always at his work to this very day.
- 14:26And I too, am working. Jesus is working, you know?
- 14:30And as I was thinking about this working, I had the image of a.
- 14:36Of a nursing home you know of a. Of a facility.
- 14:38Have have any have any of you ever volunteered or served in a
- 14:41nursing home? If you haven't, you get the
- 14:43opportunity to do it and have as many conversations as you can.
- 14:46And what you'll find in those conversations is they're bored.
- 14:50They want something to do, right?
- 14:52Like what? What?
- 14:52What is it that they can do? They just wish they had somehow
- 14:55could be useful to others. And so, according to the Bible,
- 15:00when we work, we're working for work's sake.
- 15:03It's not like we're working just to get money so we can survive.
- 15:07That's a lot of what we're into. And we need the work itself.
- 15:11We need the work to survive and live fully human lives.
- 15:15And the cool thing about work is, is one of the things that I
- 15:17find this in my own life as I'm. You know, I get to serve with
- 15:20some dear brothers of mine who know, who know me in every
- 15:23aspect of my life and all of my brokenness and all of my
- 15:26stupidity and all of my genius. I guess I have my moments, You
- 15:30know, We all do. You know, they know me at every
- 15:32level. And so being in a work
- 15:34environment like that and being with them and working so closely
- 15:37together is we get to discover who we are in work, right?
- 15:41We get to, we get to explore and see what our distinct abilities
- 15:45and gifts are. And so it's time that we see
- 15:50work as part of our design and that's part of the truth, that
- 15:53token grass. So when we see our work is just
- 15:56part of who we are, we begin to understand freedom, right?
- 16:00We have this freedom. And when we talk about Christian
- 16:04freedom, there's this image of a fish, right?
- 16:07Because sometimes with freedom, well, freedom has restrictions.
- 16:10So a fish is free as long as he's swimming around in water.
- 16:13But if you take the fish out of water and put them on the land,
- 16:16it's not going to be too long that his movements limited and
- 16:19he's no longer breathing and ultimately he's not living.
- 16:23But it's the same for us because freedom without restrictions.
- 16:27So sorry, freedom is not the absence of restrictions, it's
- 16:30just having the right restrictions.
- 16:32And so in the Bible gives us the right restrictions to operate in
- 16:36freedom and especially around work.
- 16:40And that's through obedience to His commandments, right?
- 16:43So through obedience to His commandments, that's what sets
- 16:45us free. And God, in Isaiah chapter 48,
- 16:50he said this to Israel. He says, listen.
- 16:53Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of
- 16:55Israel. I am the Lord your God who
- 16:58teaches you to profit. Who lead you?
- 17:01By the way, you should go. Oh, that you had heeded my
- 17:04commandments. Then your piece would have been
- 17:07like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of
- 17:10the sea. And so it is with work we're
- 17:13made in His image. So when we're heeding His
- 17:16commandments, we have that piece like a river.
- 17:19We have that righteousness like the waves of the sea.
- 17:22And So what does He say in Exodus 2920, verse nine?
- 17:25Six days you shall labor and do all your work.
- 17:30He calls us and directs us to live out our design to work.
- 17:36And it's not a burdensome command.
- 17:38It is an invitation to freedom, to freedom.
- 17:41So let us work and we know that God's command continues.
- 17:45He rested on the 7th day, so he also tells us to rest.
- 17:48He tells us to Sabbath. And again, this is for our
- 17:51freedom. A lot of us think, OK, we're
- 17:53just going to rest because we get to recharge our batteries
- 17:55and get back to the work week like.
- 17:59Let's let's let's learn what rest is.
- 18:02And so I'm imagining there's two camps right now And so there's
- 18:05some that are like who aren't working and not fulfilling on
- 18:09the work command. And I do want to be sensitive to
- 18:12this, right? Because I know that there are
- 18:13some of us. Maybe you're disabled or there's
- 18:15something else going on where you can't work.
- 18:17But here's the thing if you can work and you're not working, I
- 18:20just want to exhort you work, work.
- 18:24There's no work that's below you.
- 18:26That's not the biblical understanding of work.
- 18:28Work is work. And we do work for work's sake.
- 18:33And so there it is. It's like that, you know?
- 18:36So if you're waiting, if you're if you're waiting on the perfect
- 18:38job and something and you think you know the jobs that are
- 18:42before you right now are beneath you, they're not.
- 18:44And so the other camp might be those who can't rest.
- 18:48So because we not only fall into this idea of work as a necessary
- 18:52evil, there's some of us who like to work a lot and we think
- 18:55rest is a necessary evil. So I want to linger with the
- 18:57rest camp for a moment and just what is it to to be at rest with
- 19:03with God? So listen to a couple things on
- 19:09leisure that it that came up. So it has been said that leisure
- 19:12is not the mere absence of work. But an attitude of mind or soul
- 19:17in which you are able to contemplate and enjoy things as
- 19:21they are in themselves, without regard to their value or their
- 19:27immediate utility. So what is it to enjoy things
- 19:31without regard to their value or utility?
- 19:34You know, I've got the same Western mindset you guys have.
- 19:37And in that Western mindset, we're about efficiency, value
- 19:39and speed. So how does that land for you?
- 19:42Right. It can.
- 19:43It can kind of be an Ouch. Let's look at some other angles
- 19:46on leisure. Leisure is the condition of
- 19:48considering things in a celebrating spirit.
- 19:51It is not an absence of activity.
- 19:53It is rather like the stillness in the conversation of lovers,
- 19:56which is fed by their oneness. God wrested from his work and
- 20:01saw that everything was very good.
- 20:03And then God has this celebratory, approving,
- 20:06lingering gaze. So let this be the rhythm of our
- 20:10lives. Work unto the Lord.
- 20:12Stop. Worship and joy work into the
- 20:15Lord. Stop worship and joy work is for
- 20:18us. It's part of God's design and it
- 20:21was part of paradise and so also with work, there's a deep
- 20:25dignity in work, right. A neat story that has always
- 20:28stuck with me is Pastor Wayne Gorenson.
- 20:32He's taught here a few times was a missionary down.
- 20:34He and his wife from missionary down in Honduras.
- 20:37And what they found is, is they were getting all of these close
- 20:39donations and they were on the weekends bringing them to the
- 20:43community. And they were noticing that only
- 20:45the women would show up to get these free clothes.
- 20:49And they're like, why is that? And here's what they did.
- 20:52So in the context of what the value of clothing would be in
- 20:56Honduras, they, you know, was like nickels, pennies, nickels,
- 20:59whatever it was. So they put a value on these
- 21:01clothes. You know what started happening?
- 21:03The men started showing up, right, Because there's a dignity
- 21:06in that. They wanted to buy the clothes,
- 21:09and that's always been a lesson for me.
- 21:12So there's a deep dignity in work.
- 21:21So I'm looking at the clock here and so in that dignity of work
- 21:30and I know each of us have I know each of us have someone in
- 21:33my maybe have someone in mind. So for me the person that that I
- 21:38experienced like this dignity of work his name was Bert.
- 21:41This was back when I was waiting on tables in high school and
- 21:43college and Bert would wait on tables in Georgia, Florida and
- 21:48New York and he would work a little time and each he had his
- 21:51restaurant study worked. The restaurant where I worked at
- 21:53in Georgia happened to be one is 1 one of the ones where he
- 21:55worked. But Bert loved his job.
- 21:57He loved it. He loved being a waiter.
- 22:00He absolutely loved it. Everything.
- 22:02The little notes that he would write, you know, on the receipts
- 22:05as he would hand to the to the clients.
- 22:08He would do origami, had all these little origami things he
- 22:11would make the make them origami.
- 22:12You know, whatever might be speaking to him with the client,
- 22:15he loved what he did. And so as I share that story
- 22:18with you, maybe you have your own person.
- 22:21And when you have your own person that like think about
- 22:22like why that resonates. And the reason it resonates is
- 22:25you're we're inspired because we get impacted by a fellow image
- 22:29bearer who is living out the dignity of work.
- 22:34And so there is that perfect design of work, but we also have
- 22:37the fall right? And in the fall as far as work
- 22:42goes, that's where the curse comes in, because here we are
- 22:45talking about this perfect design of work.
- 22:46But man, work is hard, right? Communication is hard.
- 22:50Creating A-Team, getting everybody united with a vision
- 22:53is hard. It is hard work and we have to
- 22:57have that framework of sin. We have to be armed with that
- 23:00framework of sin and where it comes from to have the proper
- 23:04perspective towards, like why is this?
- 23:06Why is it that it's hard for me to sometimes get satisfaction
- 23:08out of my work? It's because it's because of the
- 23:11sin nature, right? And so when Adam and Eve chose
- 23:16to partake of the tree, whatever, whatever the what, you
- 23:19know, whatever the properties of that tree was, whatever it might
- 23:22have been. The bottom line is, is our
- 23:25creator put it there definitely as a test.
- 23:27And it was from an eternal relational Father, Father
- 23:31essentially saying, hey, I want you to do something for me.
- 23:35Not because you understand why, not because you can see whether
- 23:38it would benefit you or disadvantage you.
- 23:39I want you to obey me simply because of who I am, period.
- 23:45Simply because you love me and trust me more than anything.
- 23:49And that one command would continue to play out all
- 23:52throughout the Old Testament. That one command would play out
- 23:56even as he would encourage the Israel Israelites to the
- 23:59generations that was come. There was always this
- 24:01opportunity for the human race to voluntarily choose God.
- 24:06And so in the fall, very simple. Adam and Eve said, hey, we're
- 24:10going to do it our way and we're part of that legacy guys, right?
- 24:15And so as we're interacting in work and we're on projects or
- 24:22doing whatever it is that the Lord would have you do, number
- 24:24one, I would say the biblical perspective is work for work
- 24:27sake, right? Work, do the work, serve the
- 24:31work. And then as you're serving the
- 24:33work and the Lord's providing for you in that work, like the
- 24:36Lord has divinely provided that for you, do the work.
- 24:41And then inside of the brokenness, there's going to be
- 24:45things that pop up. There's going to be maybe guilt
- 24:52and striving to prove yourself. There's going to be rebellion in
- 24:57the need to assert your independence.
- 25:00There's going to be compliance in the need to please others.
- 25:05In my work life right now, I'm the Lord's really showing me,
- 25:07like how much of A people pleaser I am, you know, Like, I
- 25:10just want to say yes. I just always want to say yes,
- 25:13you know, and Pastor Ed's been my pastor for a long time now.
- 25:16And I, he knows how my knucklehead.
- 25:18Because the one thing Pastor Ed always says to me is JJ, Just
- 25:21say no. Just say no, right?
- 25:27But the deal in that is because of that fallen from sin.
- 25:30And soon as Adam and Eve put their self in that place of God,
- 25:33they said, hey, we're going to do it ourselves.
- 25:34Well, as soon as they said, hey, we're going to do it ourselves,
- 25:37what do they realize? They realize they're naked.
- 25:38And then now they got to hide their selves behind a fig leaf
- 25:41because of shame. Shame.
- 25:44This shame enters in and with that shame at a this, this, this
- 25:51quote from this Old Testaments Collie says shame is that sense
- 25:54of unease with yourself at the heart of your being.
- 25:59You know something's wrong, right?
- 26:01And so then out of the brokenness, what is it in your
- 26:04work environment that has you, that has you operate from guilt,
- 26:08that has you operate from rebellion, that has you operate
- 26:10from compliance and ultimately it's the separation from God.
- 26:19So the one event we've gone from being God centered to
- 26:22self-centered and then in that our work, our relationships and
- 26:26our love like spouse, spouses, you know, husband, wife, deeply
- 26:30altered. And then Genesis unfolds from
- 26:33there. Kane kills Abel.
- 26:35Kane builds a city of violence and oppression, and all the
- 26:38kingdoms become that God sends a flood to to clean things up.
- 26:43And then not long after you got the Tower of Babel.
- 26:46Babylon's like, hey, we've got this new technology of bricks.
- 26:49We've got this new technology and we're going to build the
- 26:51tower to the heavens. To do what?
- 26:53To make a name for ourself. And that's what we have to be
- 26:56careful of in our work life. Are you doing it?
- 26:59Are we doing it to make? Are we doing it to make a name
- 27:03for ourself, or we doing it to honor the Lord?
- 27:07But The thing is, with the Tower of Babel, it was right at the
- 27:10very heart of the cultural mandate of God.
- 27:12God knows He's given us. He's given us the world to
- 27:15cultivate, cultivate culture right.
- 27:18And so with the culture in the cultivation, do we want to make
- 27:21a name for ourselves, or do we want to make a name for the
- 27:23Lord? Which way are we going to go?
- 27:31Okay. So looking at culture, looking
- 27:33at cultivation, now we're going to hop into Esther Chapter 4,
- 27:39and if you're not already there, Esther Chapter 4.
- 27:41We're going to be in verses 13 through 17 to close out here.
- 27:45And I want to take a look at how Esther responded to her place in
- 27:47time and culture and where we pick up here.
- 27:51The Old Testament book of Esther tells us about this incident
- 27:54where it's during a time where the Jews are dispersed
- 27:58throughout the Persian Empire and the Persian emperor King
- 28:00Xerxes had disposed of his queen Vashti, and he's looking for a
- 28:04new, new queen. Well, guess what?
- 28:06Esther's the new queen. She pleases him.
- 28:09But while she's rising to to being a queen in the royal
- 28:12palace, she is hiding her Jewish identity.
- 28:15And it's during this time that Heyman this high, this high
- 28:18official comes to King Xerxes and talks him into secures, a
- 28:23royal decree with King Xerxes of hey on a given day in the
- 28:26future, let's allow, you know, give the freedom for people with
- 28:32Jewish neighbors to basically kill their Jewish neighbors and
- 28:34plunder their wealth. And that was it.
- 28:38So they would be free to kill him.
- 28:39Well then Esther's relative, Mordecai, a Jewish leader,
- 28:42comes, contacts Esther and tells her, hey, you've got to use your
- 28:46place in the palace, you've got to use your place to to avert
- 28:48this danger. And it's a big request, because
- 28:51here's Esther, a believer in God, whose whose place of power?
- 28:56I mean, she's just entered the place of power in this public
- 28:58sphere. It's shaky at best, and she's
- 29:00being called to use her personal and cultural capital to bring
- 29:04about a more just social order. So, and during this time period,
- 29:10to go to the king unbidden to tell him of Heyman's plan could
- 29:13cost her her life. And she knew this and she's, you
- 29:17know, I can imagine her thinking, does Mordecai get
- 29:19this? Does he realize this?
- 29:21And he does get it. And we see that in verse 13, in
- 29:25verse 13, picking up in chapter 4, Mordecai sent back his this
- 29:29answer. Do not think that because you
- 29:31were in the King's house, you alone of all the Jews will
- 29:33escape. For if you remain silent at this
- 29:36time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another
- 29:39place, but you and your father's family will perish.
- 29:42And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for
- 29:45such a time as this? Then Esther sent this reply to
- 29:49Mordecai. Go gather together all the Jews
- 29:52who are in Sousa and fast for me.
- 29:54Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day.
- 29:56I and my tenants will fast as you do.
- 29:59When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is
- 30:01against the law, and if I perish, I perish.
- 30:04So Mordecai went away and carried out all of Esther's
- 30:07instructions. So we did understand.
- 30:10And when he said, who knows, but that you have come to your royal
- 30:14position for such a time as this, that applies to us too.
- 30:17The position that you're in is for such a time as this.
- 30:20So how do we apply Esther to our lives?
- 30:23So Esther's more than just an example, right?
- 30:26She's a signpost. She's pointing to something
- 30:28else. Everything that Esther had came
- 30:31from God. So here's how Esther did it.
- 30:36Esther did it. She saved her people through two
- 30:38things, identification and mediation.
- 30:41Identification and mediation. Her people were condemned, but
- 30:45she identified with them and came under the same
- 30:48condemnation. She risked her life and said if
- 30:51I perish, I perish. Because she identified she could
- 30:55mediate 2 Xeroxes before the throne of power as no one else
- 30:59could, and the favor she received was transferred to her
- 31:02people. Does that sound like anybody
- 31:04else? Jesus, right, Jesus.
- 31:09Esther's pointing to Jesus, who lived in the ultimate palace
- 31:12with ultimate beauty and glory and Philippians too, says Hey,
- 31:16he came down, he came down, he came down, he gave up equality
- 31:19with the Father, He emptied himself.
- 31:23He identified with us, He took on our condemnation, and he did
- 31:27not do it at the at the risk of his life, but he did it at the
- 31:30cost of his life. Esther would say, If I perish, I
- 31:34perish. Jesus was saying, when I perish,
- 31:37I'm perishing. He knew it was coming.
- 31:40He went to the cross, He died, and he made atonement for you.
- 31:44He made atonement for me. And now He stands before the
- 31:48throne of the universe, and the favor he has procured is ours.
- 31:52If we believe in him, his is the ultimate mediation.
- 32:02I'm going to draw this to a close and in summary, we are
- 32:11designed for work in your work life because of your brokenness,
- 32:18our brokenness because of sin. You are going to be tempted and
- 32:22and you are going to have certain points of decision
- 32:25throughout your day where you're there for such a time as this.
- 32:29How is it that you're going to bring the gospel?
- 32:32How is it that you're going to be free in that moment?
- 32:35How are you going to bring freedom in Christ?
- 32:38First of all you got to have Christ right?
- 32:41Because without or with the shame, we're tending towards
- 32:46guilt. With the shame, we're tending
- 32:49towards rebellion. With the shame, we're tending
- 32:51towards compliance. What is it to bring truth in the
- 32:54moment, in your situation, in your context, and what you're up
- 32:58to in your work life? So the gospel frees us from the
- 33:02relentless pressure of having to prove ourselves and secure our
- 33:06identity through work, for we are already proven and secure.
- 33:10It also frees us from this condescending attitude that we
- 33:13spoke about earlier towards less sophisticated labor.
- 33:16If there's a job for you to do, if there's a job for me to do,
- 33:19let's do it. Let's just get it done.
- 33:22We don't have to be driven by shame.
- 33:24We don't have to be driven by the restlessness.
- 33:26And in Hebrews 12/12, it says we are looking into Jesus, the
- 33:30author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was
- 33:33set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and
- 33:37has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
- 33:40And what did he say on the cross?
- 33:41The work is done, It's finished. You don't have to prove
- 33:44ourselves, guys. We just have to abide in him
- 33:51final verse. And this is to link back with
- 33:56our dear friend niggle at the beginning, because as I read
- 33:59about niggle and I think about what it's going to be like us
- 34:02when we get to heaven again, we're going to have glorified
- 34:04bodies. So the Lord is very interested
- 34:06in material things. He's very interested in how he's
- 34:08created us. And so just as Nigel got to see
- 34:12his work in its, in its, in its totality, like what is that
- 34:15going to look like for each of us?
- 34:17What is it going to be like to visit your mansion in heaven?
- 34:19What's it going to be like to see your work that you haven't
- 34:21finished, your nerves, that get to see it in fruition in heaven?
- 34:23What is it going to be like to work together in heaven?
- 34:26I want us to ponder those things and meditate on those things and
- 34:29listen to this. And 1st Corinthians.
- 34:30This is First Corinthians 311 through 15, and it speaks to
- 34:34this For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is
- 34:37laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this
- 34:41foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay,
- 34:44straw, each one's work will become clear for the day.
- 34:48We'll declare it because it will be revealed by fire, and the
- 34:52fire will test each one's work of what sort it is.
- 34:55If anyone's work, work which is built on it, endures, he will
- 34:58receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned, he
- 35:01will suffer loss, but he himself will be saved.
- 35:04Yet so as through fire. Amen.
- 35:08All right. So as the worship team is coming
- 35:10up, you know, in a crowd like this, I don't know all of you.
- 35:13And you know, as I've shared tonight, you know, I've shared
- 35:15the gospel within the context of work.
- 35:17And I just want you to know that in the Bible, like everything
- 35:20that you're dealing with in life, the Lord can speak to, you
- 35:23know, the update went with the truth.
- 35:26Jesus is enough. And he's always bringing
- 35:29himself, and it's just him, right?
- 35:32Our freedom is in Christ. And if you don't have freedom in
- 35:34Christ, there's going to be folks up here at the end who are
- 35:38willing to pray with you, talk more with you.
- 35:41And and I'm always willing to talk more with you too, today or
- 35:44anytime in the future. So I thank you guys and let's
- 35:47work for the Lord. Amen.
