- 0:00There is a proverb that says that changing human nature is
- 0:03like trying to straighten out a dog's tail.
- 0:06As soon as the hold is taken off of the tail, it reverts to its
- 0:11usual shape. When we reach the level of the
- 0:14material consciousness, we are at the point where the solidity
- 0:18of matter makes change much more challenging than in the more
- 0:22flexible levels of the mental consciousness, the vital
- 0:26consciousness, etcetera. Another proverb states that you
- 0:31cannot teach an old dog new tricks.
- 0:36We all can recognize that training the body to enhance the
- 0:39capacity or skill set or overcome some limitation is a
- 0:44process that takes time and much consistency in order for it to
- 0:49be achieved. There are, however, embedded
- 0:53deep in the physical consciousness, layers of
- 0:56material consciousness that are so dense and solid that they do
- 1:01not respond to our normal mental and vital methods of exerting
- 1:04pressure for change. At this level are what can be
- 1:09called reflexes. The action is virtually
- 1:12automatic. When a stimulus is applied in a
- 1:15certain place, the material consciousness responds with a
- 1:19known and predictable response. Some of these reflexes or
- 1:25mechanical reactions are embedded in what we call
- 1:28instincts. They are birds that build a nest
- 1:32in a very specific manner from generation to generation.
- 1:37Salmon are known to return to the exact location where they
- 1:40are born to spawn the next generation.
- 1:44Monarch butterflies migrate thousands of miles from Mexico
- 1:48to Canada and back, going and coming to specific locales from
- 1:53generation to generation in migrations that span 4 to 5
- 1:59generations of the monarch. These types of instinctive
- 2:03behaviour are illustrative of the way nature has fixed certain
- 2:07routines. The individuals are replaced,
- 2:11the formations remain the same. In a similar way, the human
- 2:17being also has some deeply embedded behaviours that defy
- 2:20our attempts to modify them. Alpha male behaviour and the
- 2:26response to that by others in the society.
- 2:29Pecking orders, fight or flight reactions, responses to trauma,
- 2:35the flood of various hormones and neurotransmitters under
- 2:39specific conditions all represent virtually automatic
- 2:43reactions. Then there are the automatic
- 2:47reactions based in attraction, repulsion, the survival
- 2:51instinct, disgust or revulsion, trust and fear, hunger and
- 2:56thirst, all of which can arise without our conscious
- 3:00intervention when certain forces impinge upon us.
- 3:05These and other similar long established habits of the nature
- 3:09are part of nature's process to ensure that change does not
- 3:13devolve into chaos. It establishes A conservative
- 3:18principle to make change take place through a long period of
- 3:22modification, testing, and establishment of a new principle
- 3:26of action. This occurs both at the
- 3:29individual level and at the level of society.
- 3:34At a certain point, however, this conservative principle can
- 3:37lead to stagnation and decay if there is no opportunity for
- 3:41change, growth, development and modification.
- 3:46A fixed and unchanging response, which lacks adaptability and
- 3:51flexibility, eventually fails the test of nature.
- 3:56Nature thus has developed also progressive principles that can
- 4:01lead to new manifestations and changes in these deeply embedded
- 4:05responses. Changes at this level can seem
- 4:09to be impossibly slow, but eventually they take hold.
- 4:14The conservative nature and principle of this mechanical
- 4:17consciousness will eventually adopt the modification and then
- 4:23in its turn make it into a fixed routine or dogmatic approach
- 4:29until the next phase of development Finally can
- 4:32breakthrough the dense temasek formation that is created.
- 4:36At that level, we can appreciate that the vital force has a
- 4:41limited yet real power to effectuate change in material
- 4:45nature. The mental power has shown a
- 4:48greater capacity to bring about change at the level of matter
- 4:52and the material consciousness. Although this too is limited, we
- 4:58can understand that a new higher power of consciousness and
- 5:02action, embodying the next phase of the evolution of
- 5:06consciousness may be able to create a faster and more supple
- 5:10response to understand and breakthrough the resistance of
- 5:14the material consciousness. While at the same time ensuring
- 5:19that this is not simply wild change for the sake of change,
- 5:24but is actually bringing our existence to its next level of
- 5:27fulfillment. Sri Robindo notes quote.
- 5:33What you describe is the material consciousness.
- 5:36It is mostly subconscient, but the part of it that is conscious
- 5:40is mechanical, inertly moved by habits or by the forces of the
- 5:45lower nature, always repeating the same unintelligent and
- 5:50unenlightened movements. It is attached to the routine
- 5:54and established rule of what already exists, unwilling to
- 5:58change, unwilling to receive the light or obey the higher force,
- 6:04Or if it is willing, then it is unable.
- 6:08Or if it is able, then it turns the action given to it by the
- 6:12light or the force into a new mechanical routine, and so takes
- 6:17out of it all soul and life. It is obscure, stupid, indolent,
- 6:24full of ignorance and inertia, darkness and slowness of Thomas.
- 6:30It is this material consciousness into which we are
- 6:33seeking to bring first the higher divine or spiritual light
- 6:37and power and Ananda and then the Super mental truth which is
- 6:42the object of our yoga. End Quote.
