Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: On Choosing Hope When You're Tired
Transcript
- 0:17Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily and body here you are listening to
- 0:20Speaker 1: five minute Friday Unhurdle. I'm so happy to be home
- 0:25Speaker 1: in Brooklyn. Two weeks of work travel, a little bit
- 0:29Speaker 1: of personal mixed in there, and to say that I
- 0:33Speaker 1: have missed my space as an understatement, although lots of
- 0:37Speaker 1: good things to be grateful for while over on the
- 0:42Speaker 1: West Coast, I, like many of you, am feeling really
- 0:46Speaker 1: frustrated and a little all over the place lately. I
- 0:52Speaker 1: know that so many of you come here for inspiration
- 0:55Speaker 1: and motivation, and you want the tips and tricks to
- 1:00Speaker 1: live a healthier and happier, more motivated life, and I
- 1:04Speaker 1: love giving you those things. But I would be remiss
- 1:07Speaker 1: if I didn't just say that I am tired. I
- 1:11Speaker 1: am tired. I'm tired of opening my phone and being
- 1:18Speaker 1: inundated with sadness and frustration. I am tired of feeling
- 1:24Speaker 1: like everyone is so divided. I hate what is going
- 1:29Speaker 1: on in Minnesota, and I hate seeing so much hurt,
- 1:33Speaker 1: and like many of you, I am sure I don't
- 1:37Speaker 1: want to see that anymore. With that said, I also
- 1:44Speaker 1: have some hope. And I have hope because I choose hope.
- 1:50Speaker 1: That is something that I've been coming back to a
- 1:53Speaker 1: lot lately that I have this opportunity, like Megan said
- 1:58Speaker 1: in Monday's episode, to make a choice of how a
- 2:02Speaker 1: life changing event changes me. It might not always feel easy,
- 2:09Speaker 1: And like Megan said, emotions live at first in the
- 2:12Speaker 1: body for about a ninety second period, and then what
- 2:15Speaker 1: happens is that then our thoughts get into the mix.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Then we start to storytell, and so each and every
- 2:24Speaker 1: day lately, I've been doing the best that I can
- 2:26Speaker 1: to make conscious choices about the stories that I am
- 2:30Speaker 1: telling myself, about the way that I'm speaking to myself,
- 2:34Speaker 1: and I'm checking myself because I need it. I am
- 2:39Speaker 1: checking myself, and I am finding it within me to
- 2:44Speaker 1: have grace when so much feels beyond my control, rather
- 2:49Speaker 1: than letting anger and frustration take over me, I am
- 2:55Speaker 1: asking myself what is within my power to do right now?
- 3:00Speaker 1: And sometimes we need to do that right Sometimes we
- 3:02Speaker 1: need to get a little bit micro so that we
- 3:08Speaker 1: can just keep moving forward. It's funny I say that,
- 3:12Speaker 1: and I think about how I was hanging out with
- 3:14Speaker 1: my good friend Beck's gentry this week. She's a Peloton instructor,
- 3:18Speaker 1: and she often says that forward is a pace, and
- 3:21Speaker 1: right now that rings so true for me that all
- 3:25Speaker 1: I can keep doing is moving forward. And it might
- 3:28Speaker 1: not be at the speed of which I desire. I
- 3:32Speaker 1: might not be progressing as I would like, but all
- 3:38Speaker 1: progress is progress. All progress is progress. And so on
- 3:44Speaker 1: the days where things feel heavy, and on the days
- 3:46Speaker 1: where I am feeling tired, and on the days where
- 3:49Speaker 1: I wish that I moved my body like this but
- 3:51Speaker 1: only had time to do this, and I get angry
- 3:55Speaker 1: about God knows what I find it within myself to
- 4:00Speaker 1: first choose grace and second choose myself. And choosing myself
- 4:05Speaker 1: looks like being kind, it looks like slowing down, It
- 4:12Speaker 1: looks like moving forward and recognizing that again forward is
- 4:18Speaker 1: a pace. And so this week, what I offer to
- 4:22Speaker 1: you is the encouragement to do a little bit of
- 4:26Speaker 1: a reset. This is something that I do, yes every
- 4:29Speaker 1: time that I come back from traveling, but also when
- 4:31Speaker 1: I'm just feeling really overwhelmed, and it's a set of
- 4:34Speaker 1: intentional things that make me feel like a better me.
- 4:38Speaker 1: It starts with moving my body. I then buy myself
- 4:42Speaker 1: something nourishing. Ideally that's a grocery trip. I talk to
- 4:47Speaker 1: someone that cares about me, that I have no doubt
- 4:50Speaker 1: about a good friend, a family member. And then I
- 4:54Speaker 1: sit down and I unplug, and I take some time
- 4:58Speaker 1: for myself, whether that's reading or writing or painting. I
- 5:02Speaker 1: recently bought a paint by Numbers that makes me very happy.
- 5:06Speaker 1: I do something that allows me to come back to calm,
- 5:09Speaker 1: that allows me to truly reset, and each and every
- 5:14Speaker 1: time I am so much better for it. Again, my
- 5:17Speaker 1: prompt for you is, can you do your own little reset?
- 5:21Speaker 1: I'm curious to know what the components are of that
- 5:23Speaker 1: for you, and I would love for you to tag
- 5:25Speaker 1: me in those resets over on social And now a
- 5:32Speaker 1: listener question. Hey, Emily, saw your post today about the
- 5:36Speaker 1: feeling that stays after a no. I just got a
- 5:39Speaker 1: note today that has shifted energy of mine All day.
- 5:42Speaker 1: My head is in between rejection is redirection? And am
- 5:45Speaker 1: I really good at this? Even with receiving compliments this afternoon,
- 5:49Speaker 1: it feels like it's not enough to shake this feeling off.
- 5:52Speaker 1: I guess it's showing me how much I wanted it.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Any tips on differentiating a redirection to something completely different
- 5:58Speaker 1: or to just try a different and path there? Thanks Jessica,
- 6:03Speaker 1: so This is a loaded question and a good question,
- 6:06Speaker 1: and one that I talked a lot about last week
- 6:08Speaker 1: on five Minute Friday. The resounding advice I will give
- 6:12Speaker 1: here is that when something doesn't work out for you,
- 6:15Speaker 1: it's because something better is coming in its place. And
- 6:18Speaker 1: I can promise you that I know it sounds a
- 6:20Speaker 1: little woo woo, but every time that I have gotten
- 6:23Speaker 1: to this point where I am frustrated and there are
- 6:27Speaker 1: tears and I am angry, those are the same word,
- 6:29Speaker 1: but you get what I'm saying, Eventually life shows up
- 6:32Speaker 1: for me in a way that maybe I didn't expect.
- 6:35Speaker 1: And it's always been better than I anticipated. And so
- 6:39Speaker 1: right now, in the moments where you're feeling angry, you're
- 6:43Speaker 1: feeling beside yourself, I encourage you to ask yourself, do
- 6:47Speaker 1: I have any evidence that it can't get better? Because
- 6:50Speaker 1: more often than not, the answer to that is no,
- 6:54Speaker 1: I don't. More than eighty percent of our thoughts on
- 6:57Speaker 1: any given day, the science says are negative. It is
- 7:00Speaker 1: human inclination to have a negative bias. But what if
- 7:05Speaker 1: you started to train your brain, you started to be
- 7:08Speaker 1: very intentional about looking for the good. What if it
- 7:13Speaker 1: is better than you imagined? Another piece of advice when
- 7:16Speaker 1: I'm feeling frustrated is I make it a point to
- 7:20Speaker 1: allow myself to feel that frustration before moving forward into
- 7:24Speaker 1: this what if this is the best thing that could
- 7:26Speaker 1: happen to me mode, because you don't work hard for
- 7:29Speaker 1: things not to go as you had hoped. Allow for that,
- 7:33Speaker 1: and then choose what happens next. Choose yourself by opening
- 7:38Speaker 1: yourself up to the possibility that it can get better,
- 7:41Speaker 1: and I promise you that it will. Make sure you're
