- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:21Hey, team, welcome back to the show.
- 0:24Today we're going to talk about something that I believe can
- 0:28change the trajectory of your life and your work and your
- 0:31relationships and of course, your impact.
- 0:34It's something that I've struggled with in the past,
- 0:37something that I consciously have had to work on and actually
- 0:40still do, to be honest, to this day.
- 0:43This episode is about giving yourself permission.
- 0:46Permission to be a different version of yourself.
- 0:49Permission to pursue a new career, a new job, or to change
- 0:52jobs. Permission to sell yourself.
- 0:55Permission to speak up, permission to reach for a dream
- 0:58that you've been carrying in your heart for a long time.
- 1:02And I want to talk about this because I've seen this struggle
- 1:06in friends and clients and family members, in myself.
- 1:11So many of us are waiting. We're waiting for someone else
- 1:15to hand us this slip of paper that says you're allowed to do
- 1:20the thing you want to do. And the truth is, permission is
- 1:24not required from anybody except for yourself.
- 1:28You don't need a stamp of approval for anyone else in your
- 1:30life to live the life that you're meant to be living.
- 1:34But there's a lot of things that hold us back from giving
- 1:38ourselves permission to do the things that we want to do.
- 1:41So let's start with the not. Because the truth is most of us
- 1:45are not giving ourselves permission.
- 1:48We don't give ourselves permission to change because
- 1:50we're scared of disappointing people, or we get into people
- 1:54pleasing mode, or we feel like we're going to put people off
- 1:58who've known us as we've always been.
- 2:00We don't give ourselves permission to sell ourselves
- 2:03because we fear that we're being arrogant or salesy or over the
- 2:07top. We don't give ourselves
- 2:09permission to speak up because we fear being rejected.
- 2:13We fear conflict. We fear being seen as too much
- 2:17or taking up too much space. We don't give ourselves
- 2:20permission to dream bigger than what is currently in our reality
- 2:24because we're afraid that we will fail.
- 2:26We're afraid that we'll be judged.
- 2:29And The thing is, the result of all of that is that we end up
- 2:33shrinking and hiding. We live smaller than we're meant
- 2:37to live, and our impact suffers as a result of that.
- 2:40And because this podcast is about impact, we have to address
- 2:43the fact that we don't take up the space that we could in order
- 2:49to have the positive impact that we want.
- 2:52I mean, think about it, If you're holding back from giving
- 2:55yourself permission to show up fully, then the people around
- 2:59you, your family, your colleagues, your clients, your
- 3:03community, they miss out on the best version of you.
- 3:05We all know this. We've all seen the person who
- 3:08has been timid and has been holding back out of fear,
- 3:11whatever reason. And we can see that as a result
- 3:15of them holding back, we don't get the opportunity to be on the
- 3:18receiving end of all the gifts that they could offer.
- 3:21I've seen that in friends. I've seen that in clients.
- 3:24I know that you've seen it too. I think that when we hold back
- 3:27our permission, we hold back our gifts.
- 3:30Permission not given becomes impact that is not created.
- 3:36And here's the truth. I am very guilty of this myself.
- 3:40I remember probably 10 years ago wanting to get into the coaching
- 3:45world. I love self development.
- 3:47I loved the idea of coaching and all that it entailed.
- 3:51But there was somebody who had said to me in the past, oh, life
- 3:55coaching is a joke. Who do those people think they
- 3:57are telling people how to live? And the reality is that person
- 4:00really had no idea what this modality was, what this career
- 4:03was. They didn't understand that
- 4:05coaching wasn't telling people what to do.
- 4:08But that comment really stuck in my mind, and I was so scared to
- 4:13pursue this new career for fear of being judged, for fear of
- 4:17failing, for fear of being criticized, or for people
- 4:20looking at me and saying, who do you think you are?
- 4:23And so even though I was really excited about the idea, I waited
- 4:26for a long time. I didn't give myself permission
- 4:29to pursue something different. The other thing that was going
- 4:33on in my mind was I didn't think that I could give myself
- 4:36permission to pursue another career.
- 4:39I've been practicing acupuncture for a long time.
- 4:41I had gone through a long graduate program.
- 4:43I had paid a lot of student loans to go through that
- 4:46graduate program. I had devoted a lot of my life
- 4:49in the pursuit of practicing Chinese medicine and
- 4:51acupuncture. I had built a really thriving
- 4:54practice. And so I thought, why would I
- 4:56change any of this? It would be stupid to do that.
- 4:59And I was so reluctant to give myself permission to do
- 5:02something different. And as a result of that, it took
- 5:05me a long time to start pursuing this thing that I had been
- 5:09dreaming about for years, something that had been nagging
- 5:12in my brain for so long. And why do we do this?
- 5:16Why do we wait around for someone else to tell us that
- 5:20it's OK? Why do we delay giving our own
- 5:23self permission? I think a lot of it is
- 5:26conditioning. From the time we're little,
- 5:28we're taught to ask for permission.
- 5:30Permission to leave the table, to go to the bathroom, to speak
- 5:33up in class, to try something new.
- 5:36And that conditioning doesn't just vanish when we grow up.
- 5:40And some of that stuff is great. We want to be polite, respectful
- 5:42people. But it does carry over.
- 5:44So even as adults, we are subconsciously waiting for that
- 5:49nod of approval from our boss or our partner or our parents or
- 5:53our peers. We think, if someone else says
- 5:56yes, then I'll go for it. And trust me, I have been there
- 6:00before. I have caught myself saying that
- 6:03very thing. If someone else says yes, then
- 6:06I'll go for it. But here's the truth.
- 6:09The people that you're waiting on may never give permission.
- 6:13Not 'cause they don't love you, but because it's not their job.
- 6:17They're not thinking about you that much.
- 6:19Also, they have no skin in the game.
- 6:22Your outcomes don't affect them that much.
- 6:25They affect you, so people don't think about giving you
- 6:29permission to do the stuff you want to do because they're not
- 6:32invested and it doesn't affect them.
- 6:34And frankly, most people think I have no right to tell someone
- 6:37else what to do. You're the one who has to walk
- 6:41your path, live in your body, deal with the decisions that you
- 6:45make, and the only person who can give you the permission to
- 6:49step into your next chapter, your next dream is you.
- 6:54Now, there's a little pushback that I get on this sometimes
- 6:57when I'm talking with clients about it.
- 6:59And so I wanted to call it out. That pushback is this idea of
- 7:02timing. Many of my clients will say,
- 7:04well, I didn't feel like it was the right time, and I really
- 7:06feel like the timing has to be right.
- 7:09I think there's a lot of merit to this.
- 7:11I am a true believer that timing is important and that some
- 7:16things have to happen of their own time.
- 7:19But there's a distinction between the right timing and
- 7:24dragging your feet because you're scared.
- 7:27That's where we get stuck. And so we don't say yes to doing
- 7:30the thing. We don't let ourselves go there.
- 7:33And so we have to be aware of this fine line between giving
- 7:36ourselves permission and holding back because we're in fear.
- 7:41Let's talk about the cost of being slow to give ourselves
- 7:44permission to do things. When you delay permission, you
- 7:48delay your growth, you delay opportunities, you delay impact.
- 7:53I know that you can feel that in your body when I say that
- 7:56because we all have an experience in our life where we
- 7:59were holding back and as a result, we recognized that we
- 8:03delayed opportunities and growth.
- 8:06Think about any dream that you might be carrying.
- 8:09Maybe it's the book you want to write or the business you want
- 8:12to start. Maybe you want to leave a job
- 8:14and start a new career. Maybe it's the conversation you
- 8:16want to have with somebody, your partner, your spouse, a friend.
- 8:20Maybe it's a relationship that you want to leave or go out in
- 8:24the world and find every month, every year that you wait, you're
- 8:30not just losing time, you're losing the ripple effect of what
- 8:34that dream could create in your life.
- 8:37I think about what I could have created if I would have started
- 8:40getting into coaching five years earlier.
- 8:43The ripple effect that I could have had.
- 8:45And I've worked with so many clients who tell me I wish I had
- 8:48started sooner. And what they're really saying
- 8:50is I wish I hadn't waited for permission to do the thing, or I
- 8:54wish I would have given myself permission.
- 8:57Because here's the thing, life doesn't pause for you while you
- 9:00wait. The world just keeps spinning
- 9:02around and around. And the longer you hold back,
- 9:05the more you can reinforce that belief that you do need
- 9:08permission. Have you ever had that
- 9:11experience in your life where you've been dealing with
- 9:14something, whether it's an illness or an injury or
- 9:17something that you've been dealing with that's just been so
- 9:18heavy and then you come out of it and you're like, wow,
- 9:21everybody else moved on with their lives.
- 9:22I've been so in this thing and everything just kept going.
- 9:27Life doesn't pause while you wait.
- 9:29I remind myself of that all the time so that I can remember to
- 9:32take quicker action in my life. Now let's flip it a little bit.
- 9:36What happens when you're quick to give yourself permission?
- 9:40I'll tell you what I see happen in my life.
- 9:42I see more magic, I see more momentum, and I see a lot more
- 9:47movement. When you give yourself
- 9:49permission, you unlock a special kind of freedom.
- 9:53You allow yourself to evolve and to grow into different new
- 9:58versions of yourself. You step into careers that fit
- 10:01your gifts, not just your resume that you've built.
- 10:04You speak up in rooms where your voice matters.
- 10:07You make a difference. You take risks that lead to
- 10:10rewards that you never thought were possible.
- 10:11You see new opportunities and new paths light up in front of
- 10:15you that you've never seen before.
- 10:18When I think back on that example of of me holding back
- 10:20permission to become a coach and to get into coaching, I think
- 10:24about how much my life has changed because I finally was
- 10:28able to give myself permission to make that shift.
- 10:31And I see now that I get to have tremendous impact in a way that
- 10:34I didn't have before. I am able to do this podcast
- 10:38that I never gave myself permission to do in the past.
- 10:41I get to work with amazing, incredible, inspiring people who
- 10:44are out in the world doing incredible things.
- 10:46And I get to see the ripple effect of the work we're doing
- 10:49and what they do in their world. I get to do workshops and
- 10:53leadership events with companies.
- 10:55I get to speak at events. All of this stuff is happening
- 10:58as a result of the permission that I gave myself years back,
- 11:02and I only wish that I had done it sooner.
- 11:05Here's another fun little side effect.
- 11:07When you give yourself permission, you give others
- 11:10permission too. People see you owning your
- 11:12choices, owning your circumstances, and it inspires
- 11:15them to own theirs. And then you're having a whole
- 11:19different kind of impact, a whole new kind of impact that
- 11:22you didn't have before. When you're able to give
- 11:24yourself quick permission, it equals faster growth, bolder
- 11:28action, and a bigger ripple effect.
- 11:31So let's think about how we can make this practical because it's
- 11:34nice to talk about it. But what does this actually look
- 11:36like in real time? Giving yourself permission might
- 11:40look like saying to yourself, I'm not happy in this career or
- 11:44this relationship or these circumstances, and I'm allowed
- 11:48to pivot. It might look like saying I'm
- 11:51allowed to take up space in this conversation.
- 11:54It might be saying I'm allowed to raise my rates because the
- 11:57value I provide is worth it. It might be saying I'm allowed
- 12:00to dream beyond my current reality, my current
- 12:03circumstances, and I don't need proof before I start.
- 12:08When you're saying that kind of stuff to yourself in the
- 12:10beginning, it might feel a little forced, but trust me,
- 12:13it's a whole different kind of frame.
- 12:15It's a different outlet, a new perspective from what you've
- 12:19typically been saying to yourself, which is I can't do
- 12:22this. And it's not about waiting until
- 12:25you feel 100% confident. Permission isn't this reward for
- 12:29having it all figured out. I mean, I don't know anybody who
- 12:32has it all figured out. This has historically been one
- 12:35of my mistakes. I thought that I had to have it
- 12:37all figured out before I could give myself permission to take
- 12:40the leap. But you don't need to do that.
- 12:42You don't have to have a perfectly foolproof detailed
- 12:46plan. Instead, let's think about
- 12:49permission as the key that opens the door so that you can figure
- 12:53it out. So how do you get better at
- 12:56this? There's a couple things that I
- 12:58think about. First, notice where you're not
- 13:01giving yourself permission. Catch yourself in the places
- 13:03where you're holding back, where you're saying I can't when
- 13:06really it's I won't let myself because I haven't given myself
- 13:10permission. The second thing I think about
- 13:12is instead of waiting for approval, say it out loud, say
- 13:17your permission out loud. I give myself permission to
- 13:21blank dot dot dot. Try it with a lot of different
- 13:24things. I give myself permission to
- 13:26practice saying it out loud because I guarantee you've been
- 13:29saying in your mind about some things.
- 13:31I can't do that thing because let's flip the script on it.
- 13:35And then finally take some mini action, some micro action.
- 13:39Because giving yourself permission really doesn't mean
- 13:42anything without taking some action.
- 13:44And it can be a small step. Sending an e-mail, making a
- 13:47call, writing the first page of a book, any of that stuff will
- 13:52signal to your brain, I am moving on this thing.
- 13:55I'm allowed to do it. I always tell my clients that
- 13:58insight plus action equals transformation.
- 14:01Because it's not enough to have the epiphany, the light bulb
- 14:03moment, the insight. You have to make a move on it.
- 14:07So here's the challenge I have for you this week.
- 14:10Stop waiting on the thing you've been wanting to do.
- 14:14Stop outsourcing your power. Stop waiting for someone else to
- 14:17give you a yes when it could really be you that gives
- 14:20yourself a yes. Because the truth is, permission
- 14:23is not required, not from outside of you, not from them,
- 14:27not from anyone. You just have to write your own
- 14:29permission slip this time. So write it and sign your name
- 14:33on it, just like you did when you were a little kid, and get
- 14:36started on this thing that has been in your brain and your
- 14:39heart for so long. I'm so glad you're here today.
- 14:42Thank you for listening and thank you for being ready to
- 14:44Impact. Thanks for listening to Impact
- 14:47Ready. I hope today's episode inspired
- 14:49you to own your impact and recognize that you are powerful.
- 14:53By elevating our energy and awareness, we can create
- 14:56exponential change in this life. If you enjoyed today's insights,
- 15:00share them with a friend and subscribe to the show for more.
- 15:03I truly appreciate you. Thanks again for being here.
