- 1:49Speaker 2: Hey, wait a minute, weren't you dating the luscious Hillie
- 1:52Speaker 2: Ransom a while back?
- 1:53Speaker 4: Yeah? I was?
- 1:54Speaker 2: But I throw over all, Rip, You just don't appreciate
- 1:58Speaker 2: the finer things of life.
- 2:00Speaker 4: Oh no, well have you had to put up with?
- 2:01Speaker 4: Some of her wild ideas are crazy?
- 2:04Speaker 2: It's so, what what difference does it make? All that beauty,
- 2:07Speaker 2: all that money?
- 2:08Speaker 5: I ask you?
- 2:09Speaker 4: You want a date with it at company expense?
- 2:12Speaker 2: Well why not?
- 2:14Speaker 4: Didn't grab the first place to get and play on it?
- 2:16Speaker 2: Okay, I'm on my what's the catch? Rip it?
- 2:21Speaker 4: Meet you at the Los Angeles International Airport?
- 2:23Speaker 2: Yeah? Fine, I suppose you give me some.
- 2:26Speaker 6: Hmm Bob Bailey and the exciting Adventures of the Man
- 2:39Speaker 6: with the action packed expensive out America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Oh it's truly Johnny Dollar.
- 2:51Speaker 6: Now at one of yours.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Truly Johnny Dollar expense accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny
- 3:10Speaker 2: Dollar to the Mono Guarantee Insurance Company Los Angeles office.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Following is an account of expenses incurred during my investigation
- 3:18Speaker 2: of the delectable Damsel Matter expense account. I had won
- 3:26Speaker 2: one hundred and seven dollars even hardfrid to New York
- 3:28Speaker 2: and a DC seven main lineer. A Los Angeles single
- 3:33Speaker 2: is a good name for Rip. He has a knack
- 3:35Speaker 2: for meeting wealthy, important people, particularly women. Yeah, they practically
- 3:40Speaker 2: swoon under his spell. And he sells of insurance. I'm
- 3:44Speaker 2: not sure I approve his love him and leading tactics,
- 3:46Speaker 2: but it's no wonder he knew Hilly Ransom heirs to
- 3:49Speaker 2: a couple of million bucks. H Johnny, But he hadn't
- 3:51Speaker 2: told me why he wanted me to meet her, and
- 3:54Speaker 2: I was sure it wasn't just for a date day
- 3:56Speaker 2: dreaming Jenny, Huh, your baggage right here on the wreck.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Come on, I'll hep you put in the car and
- 4:01Speaker 2: we'll take off. Oh hi, rep, sure, where's the car
- 4:06Speaker 2: over there in the parking lot?
- 4:08Speaker 5: Hey?
- 4:08Speaker 2: What were you dreaming about?
- 4:09Speaker 7: There?
- 4:09Speaker 2: The luggage? Pick up? Oh? Hilda guary at a Ransom?
- 4:12Speaker 2: Who else? And I take it you're a little romance
- 4:14Speaker 2: square here, the one that hit the headlines a while.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Bag is all over? Oh sure, sure, But I got
- 4:19Speaker 2: our insurance business, all of it, and Johnny, if I
- 4:23Speaker 2: had to, I could live off the premiums of that
- 4:25Speaker 2: one account alone. And it must be pretty big because
- 4:27Speaker 2: if I remember the way you live, fancy clothes, fancy apartment, Well,
- 4:31Speaker 2: you can't take it with your boy. Besides, it's all
- 4:33Speaker 2: good for my business. Here be hot, Hey, you like
- 4:37Speaker 2: this little truck? The little old truck was a brand
- 4:41Speaker 2: new Eldorado Bi, a Ritz, special paint job, dual fittings
- 4:45Speaker 2: instead of chrome, every accessory you can think of, including
- 4:48Speaker 2: a bar in the backseat. Yeah, playboy, party boy, rip
- 4:52Speaker 2: single hadn't changed a bit. And if you make contacts,
- 4:56Speaker 2: make him right where the money is. And if it's
- 4:59Speaker 2: a pretty girl that has the money and you can
- 5:01Speaker 2: charm her into your arms, maybe you made us say okay, okay,
- 5:06Speaker 2: and I'll tell me, Rep Junny, did you want her
- 5:09Speaker 2: hear of the cape Star? Was that?
- 5:11Speaker 6: Well?
- 5:11Speaker 2: It's an improved as big as a Robin's egg in
- 5:13Speaker 2: a fourteen carrot mounting, loaded with diamonds and rubies, a
- 5:17Speaker 2: brooch value nearly three hundred thousand plans. That's Hildegarde Ransom
- 5:22Speaker 2: owns it? Uh huh or did she lose it? But
- 5:25Speaker 2: all I know is that she called me and she
- 5:27Speaker 2: said it was missing. That she wants me to go
- 5:29Speaker 2: out and have a look out where. But I don't
- 5:31Speaker 2: want that whacky day to get her hands on me again.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Now you heard of some of her crazy escapades, like
- 5:36Speaker 2: at the time she flooded half of the bell Air estates.
- 5:39Speaker 2: What well, she didn't like the looks of a fire
- 5:41Speaker 2: plug on her five acres up there, so she had
- 5:44Speaker 2: the gardener plants on dynamite under it. Oh, brother, I
- 5:47Speaker 2: gotta do something for laugh, she said, the old story
- 5:50Speaker 2: of the idle rich with too much time on her hands.
- 5:52Speaker 8: Huh, that's right.
- 5:53Speaker 2: What kind of stuff can lead to trouble sometimes? Or
- 5:56Speaker 2: is she repped bell Air? Did you say well when
- 5:58Speaker 2: she's home? Which is an off? Right? Now? I think?
- 6:01Speaker 2: What's the sam hill o? Sure all the comfors of
- 6:04Speaker 2: home sht it up? Hello?
- 6:07Speaker 5: All right?
- 6:08Speaker 3: Catch one, one, two one?
- 6:09Speaker 2: That's right off, brother, I please, I have a call
- 6:11Speaker 2: for you, all right, brother? When I get rich enough
- 6:14Speaker 2: to put a mobile phone in my car, it doesn't
- 6:16Speaker 2: cost much, doesn't.
- 6:16Speaker 6: Matter of single.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Are you coming out here to see me or aren't you?
- 6:20Speaker 6: Oh?
- 6:20Speaker 2: Well, now, hilly, fifth.
- 6:21Speaker 9: Time I've called, and Ripply, if you don't do something
- 6:24Speaker 9: about my loss at the Cape Star, you call the police.
- 6:27Speaker 5: Well, sure of course I might have known.
- 6:30Speaker 9: You would, so they'll tell the papers. More publicity for
- 6:33Speaker 9: you and that lousy insurance, missiness.
- 6:36Speaker 2: I always notify the police.
- 6:37Speaker 3: You know what that means.
- 6:39Speaker 9: It means reporters, photographer's cops, half the town falling all
- 6:42Speaker 9: over themselves when I get in you're somebody else.
- 6:46Speaker 3: And I don't mean the cops. If you don't get
- 6:47Speaker 3: out of.
- 6:50Speaker 10: What, I'll cancel every policy I have with you, my own,
- 6:54Speaker 10: the house and the cars, the old tom everything here.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Will you take this? Johnny Hash? Sure? Hello?
- 7:00Speaker 5: Oh didn't you hear what I said?
- 7:01Speaker 2: Miss Uh? What that Johnny dollar?
- 7:06Speaker 3: Johnny?
- 7:08Speaker 2: So we got you?
- 7:10Speaker 3: Well, now we'll have some action. You will come out
- 7:13Speaker 3: here right away, won't you.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Well that depends.
- 7:16Speaker 9: I don't know what to do. Jamestar, Emerald gone and
- 7:19Speaker 9: Rip so busy. You can't leave his office, Johnny.
- 7:23Speaker 2: You have to complease, Well, look.
- 7:26Speaker 3: I knew you would, Honey. I'll be waiting for you.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Rip.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Compell you how to get here?
- 7:30Speaker 2: Good bye?
- 7:32Speaker 5: Uh?
- 7:33Speaker 2: Yeah, don't be fooled, Johnny She really is that charming
- 7:39Speaker 2: when she wants to be. Okay, Rip take me to her.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Uh not quite huh. That old tub she mentioned is
- 7:45Speaker 2: our one hundred and sixty five foot diesel yet why
- 7:47Speaker 2: and news I can guess is about Forced Gordon seventy
- 7:50Speaker 2: miles off shore. Do you expect me to walk?
- 7:52Speaker 4: Well?
- 7:52Speaker 2: She also has a cruiser, a fifty eight quarter parked
- 7:55Speaker 2: down at Balboa. You can go in that and you
- 7:57Speaker 2: had better swing around, brother, we're driving north. There's a
- 8:00Speaker 2: private airport up here off the Pervita Boulevard where I
- 8:02Speaker 2: keep my plane. Your own plane? Sure? Holy smoking.
- 8:15Speaker 6: Back two of yours, truly Johnny Dollar in a moment,
- 8:18Speaker 6: And now for.
- 8:19Speaker 11: Another episode in the life of Sergeant Donald Bellweather.
- 8:23Speaker 5: My husband, Reba, Where are you in the kitchen?
- 8:34Speaker 10: Dear?
- 8:35Speaker 5: I'm coming Donald. What are you doing home so early?
- 8:37Speaker 5: Are you sing?
- 8:38Speaker 2: No? Not sick.
- 8:40Speaker 12: I came home early to get some work done. But
- 8:41Speaker 12: you're going to have to help me, help you with what?
- 8:44Speaker 12: Well you got me into this. You're gonna have to
- 8:45Speaker 12: help me get out.
- 8:46Speaker 5: Donald. You're not making sense. What did I get you into?
- 8:49Speaker 11: Well?
- 8:49Speaker 12: It all started this morning. I walked into the Lieutenant's
- 8:52Speaker 12: office and I started bragging about how well my wife
- 8:54Speaker 12: delivered her speech you on safety at the BTA meeting.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Ah, that was sweet of you, yes, but the lieutenant
- 9:01Speaker 2: was quite impressed.
- 9:01Speaker 12: In fact, he was so impressed he assigned me to
- 9:03Speaker 12: give a talk on safety tomorrow at the Enlisted Men's meeting.
- 9:06Speaker 5: Well, good for you, sergeant.
- 9:08Speaker 2: You can do anything, seez I don't know, reader, what
- 9:12Speaker 2: do I say?
- 9:13Speaker 11: Well, just say that. Here's some notes on traffic accidents.
- 9:20Speaker 11: Just three these allowed. Oh oh, come on, come on,
- 9:24Speaker 11: just try them for size.
- 9:25Speaker 12: Okay, men, what if a disaster wiped out every man, woman,
- 9:33Speaker 12: and child in Springfield, Illinois.
- 9:35Speaker 2: We'd be shocked, wouldn't we. So would the entire world.
- 9:39Speaker 12: Yet, a total of ninety five thousand accidental deaths occurred
- 9:43Speaker 12: two years ago in the United States. That's about ten
- 9:46Speaker 12: thousand more than the population of Springfield, the capital of Illinois.
- 9:49Speaker 5: That boy, you're doing fine.
- 9:51Speaker 12: Go on, and don't think the men in uniform are
- 9:54Speaker 12: exempt from accidents. In one branch of the service alone,
- 9:57Speaker 12: six hundred were killed and five thousand injured in a
- 10:00Speaker 12: a month period. On many many days during the Korean conflict,
- 10:04Speaker 12: more servicemen lost their lives on the highway than on
- 10:07Speaker 12: the battle field.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Wait a minute, read, but these aren't notes. This is
- 10:12Speaker 2: a full speech, all typed and ready. That's right there.
- 10:15Speaker 2: I wrote it for you this morning. Well, how did
- 10:18Speaker 2: you know.
- 10:18Speaker 5: Your lieutenant and his wife were at the PTA.
- 10:22Speaker 12: Put up job? I see it all now. I only
- 10:27Speaker 12: hope I can do this fine speech justice. Oh you
- 10:30Speaker 12: will die, Well I'll try.
- 10:32Speaker 13: Oh that's my donald, that's my doll, and now act
- 10:47Speaker 13: two of yours, truly Johnny Dollar and the delectable Demsel matter.
- 10:55Speaker 2: During the ride from Los Angeles to Balboa and Rip
- 10:58Speaker 2: Single's private plane, he admitted to me that he hadn't
- 11:00Speaker 2: made all his money in the insurance business. Seems a
- 11:03Speaker 2: rich uncle had conveniently died some years before Lucky stiff
- 11:08Speaker 2: a rip. I mean, look, all I know, Johnny, is
- 11:15Speaker 2: that Hilly took the Cape starreml along with her on
- 11:17Speaker 2: this yachting trip. And now it's gone. Yeah, how much
- 11:19Speaker 2: of a trip. Oh Lord knows where she's been, She said.
- 11:22Speaker 2: She might have ended up in China, the Philippines, most anywhere.
- 11:27Speaker 2: She has the money, she has the time, and she's
- 11:29Speaker 2: done everything under the sun that normal people do. So
- 11:32Speaker 2: now she keeps looking for the unusual, anything for thrill. Yeah. Well,
- 11:35Speaker 2: when did she discover the stone was missing? She radioed
- 11:38Speaker 2: to me today from out on the high seat. Yeah,
- 11:41Speaker 2: she said she was certain she had it the day
- 11:42Speaker 2: before that because she warned, and then when she went
- 11:45Speaker 2: to look for it, it was gone. Some remember the
- 11:47Speaker 2: crudiest pots. I don't know. Maybe she dropped it overboard,
- 11:51Speaker 2: you mean purposely to collect the insurance. Who knows, Oh,
- 11:55Speaker 2: belthough she has so much money. Oh, who knows. Maybe
- 11:58Speaker 2: she hasn't lost it at all. She just on this company.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Oh look, there's Newport and Balboa down below. I'll circle
- 12:05Speaker 2: Hildy's little summer house before we land. Hildy Ransom's little
- 12:13Speaker 2: summer house turned out to be a mansion right on
- 12:15Speaker 2: the waterfront, and tied up to the long dock. Was
- 12:17Speaker 2: not only the cruiser, but a snappy little speedboat, a
- 12:20Speaker 2: small sailboat, and a couple of our boards, all very nice.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Not so the skipper of the cruiser. No, my orders
- 12:27Speaker 2: the last time I spoke to the Hill tomorrow were
- 12:29Speaker 2: to take you through a mister single nobody else. Look,
- 12:32Speaker 2: we just talked him as Ransom by radio, and she
- 12:34Speaker 2: wants you to take mister dollar On't that I tell
- 12:36Speaker 2: you my last guard cat your last order. Hey wait
- 12:40Speaker 2: a minute, please, Skipper, have you got a radio on
- 12:42Speaker 2: this cruiser? All right, then make contact with the hill
- 12:45Speaker 2: tomorrow find out for yourself. Okay, I'll do it at
- 12:48Speaker 2: the same time. You can get a position. Okay, we'll see. Well,
- 12:54Speaker 2: give dear Hilley my love or whatever else you can
- 12:58Speaker 2: think of, anything that little keep her from switching your
- 13:00Speaker 2: insurance to somebody else. You are a love serience here.
- 13:05Speaker 2: You don't like me, did no? Were you ever really
- 13:08Speaker 2: serious with a rip? Yeah? Sure, but I'm just not
- 13:13Speaker 2: the marrying kind. So Johnny, the field is clear for you. Huh.
- 13:17Speaker 2: And if you want to let you down to a
- 13:18Speaker 2: few million bucks, she's really mighty sweet to track the goal. Well,
- 13:24Speaker 2: let me know how you make out, Johnny, and please
- 13:27Speaker 2: find that emment. I beg your pardon, sir.
- 13:31Speaker 7: Yeah, we're ready to sail when I have the gentleman's ready.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Okay, Skipper, let's go. The cruiser turned out to be
- 13:42Speaker 2: a dilly a luxury from Stambuster, and the trip out
- 13:45Speaker 2: to the Hill of Moora took much longer than I expected.
- 13:48Speaker 2: In spite of the powerful engines that sent us through
- 13:49Speaker 2: the water at over eighteen knots. It was well after
- 13:52Speaker 2: dawn the next morning when we hold too alongside the
- 13:54Speaker 2: Hill of Morning, and that one hundred and sixty five
- 13:57Speaker 2: foot diesel yacht made the cruiser look like a broken
- 13:59Speaker 2: down robots. As for Hildy Ransom five six or seven,
- 14:07Speaker 2: she was blonde, and she was beautiful, with thick blue
- 14:11Speaker 2: eyes that had fun and lapt sparkling at a figure.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Well, come on, Johnny, come aboard, and many get.
- 14:22Speaker 2: The groover around it.
- 14:24Speaker 3: He's a doota wants to go on shore again.
- 14:27Speaker 5: Hi, Johnny, welcome aboard the old tub.
- 14:30Speaker 2: You call this floating palace at tubb.
- 14:32Speaker 10: Well after the holes that got shot into it.
- 14:34Speaker 5: So wonder we're still afloat.
- 14:36Speaker 2: You've been shot in for most of them.
- 14:38Speaker 10: The China coast, we had a ball for a while.
- 14:40Speaker 10: I thought some of the red aircraft were going to
- 14:42Speaker 10: strape us one night old, but it got too dark
- 14:45Speaker 10: for them, and the captain, the old fuddy duddy, turned
- 14:48Speaker 10: off all our running lights and we had it out
- 14:49Speaker 10: to see you get under.
- 14:50Speaker 2: The sun where you're doing off the China coast. Miss Ransom.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Nice Hildy.
- 14:55Speaker 10: Oh, just finding out what goes on in the world.
- 14:58Speaker 10: You know what I really wanted to do. Why they
- 15:01Speaker 10: have visited joe in lie the Red General. Why God,
- 15:05Speaker 10: they wouldn't let us a shore along enough without a
- 15:07Speaker 10: lot of fuss and bother.
- 15:08Speaker 5: So now that's one of my quarters. And talk about
- 15:11Speaker 5: the keep stocks.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, I could kill.
- 15:14Speaker 10: That Rip Single for not coming out here, but I'm
- 15:16Speaker 10: so glad you could. You're even better looking than i'd heard. Hey,
- 15:25Speaker 10: you as much of a wolf as Rip says you are.
- 15:28Speaker 10: Oh well, no, wait a minute, I'll find out for myself.
- 15:33Speaker 10: Might be fun finding out.
- 15:39Speaker 2: For a minute, I began to wonder, maybe Rip wasn't
- 15:42Speaker 2: the only one in this affair who turned on the
- 15:44Speaker 2: charm to further's on ends Hildy Ransom. Let's face it
- 15:47Speaker 2: was wealthy there to well, who do anything for a thrill?
- 15:51Speaker 2: Couple her with a character like Rip Single, yeah, I wondered.
- 15:56Speaker 2: But then walking along the deck with her, I saw
- 15:58Speaker 2: something that suddenly changed my mind. One of the crew
- 16:01Speaker 2: who ducked into a doorway when he spotted me who
- 16:04Speaker 2: I wasn't sure, but I had a sudden metal image
- 16:08Speaker 2: of his eyes somewhere in the past, looking at me
- 16:11Speaker 2: over the sights of a gun. Fact free of yours, truly,
- 16:18Speaker 2: Johnny Dollar, in a moment.
- 16:20Speaker 8: Do you know who said that man is free who
- 16:24Speaker 8: is protected from injury? Those words came from Daniel Webster,
- 16:31Speaker 8: one of the most eloquent orators in American history. Webster
- 16:35Speaker 8: knew that a man could not be free unless he
- 16:37Speaker 8: lived in a country which recognized his right to freedom
- 16:41Speaker 8: and created laws to protect that freedom. A slave state
- 16:45Speaker 8: may say that its citizens are free, but as long
- 16:48Speaker 8: as a single citizen can be harmed by the whim
- 16:51Speaker 8: of a country's rulers, true freedom does not exist. A
- 16:56Speaker 8: man is free only if his rights to freedom are protected.
- 17:01Speaker 8: Remember the words of Daniel Webster. They are part of
- 17:05Speaker 8: your American heritage. The free man must be protected from injury?
- 17:11Speaker 6: And now act three of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar and
- 17:14Speaker 6: the delectable Damsel Matter.
- 17:26Speaker 10: I could have waited till we got in the report
- 17:29Speaker 10: the loss of the Emerald. But sit down, Johnny and
- 17:31Speaker 10: I'll have some drinks brodding.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Okay, thanks Allison.
- 17:35Speaker 5: Because of where.
- 17:35Speaker 10: We've been on this trip, we'll have to go through
- 17:37Speaker 10: customs and it'll be the police and the reporters and
- 17:40Speaker 10: so on, and whoever took the cap Star might have
- 17:42Speaker 10: a chance to do.
- 17:45Speaker 2: What's the matter that drawer where.
- 17:47Speaker 5: I kept it? I'm sure I left that closed after
- 17:50Speaker 5: I'd hunted for it.
- 17:51Speaker 10: And excuse me, Johnny, Yeah, look, look it's here.
- 17:59Speaker 5: The Cape Star is back.
- 18:02Speaker 2: You're sure, yes, of course here look at it. And
- 18:05Speaker 2: you're sure it wasn't there before.
- 18:07Speaker 10: Of course I am.
- 18:08Speaker 5: I turned this cabin upside down, Hildy.
- 18:11Speaker 2: This isn't some kind of a gag, isn't what I mean?
- 18:14Speaker 2: You're having me come all the way out here to
- 18:16Speaker 2: find something that wasn't lost after all?
- 18:18Speaker 5: Johnny, Johnny, how can you see such a thing? Court's not.
- 18:28Speaker 10: Now that you are here and the Star is safely sound,
- 18:32Speaker 10: I think we'll have fun together, Hildy.
- 18:35Speaker 5: I've got so tired of the other guests I have.
- 18:38Speaker 10: On board, and stuffy old Professor Randolph and he's boring wife,
- 18:41Speaker 10: and Jolly Britton and that girl he's always pawning over.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Keepe Starr was actually missing, I swear, Johnny. All right,
- 18:49Speaker 2: then I still have a job to do. I want
- 18:52Speaker 2: to meet these guests of yours. Also. I want to
- 18:55Speaker 2: talk to the crew.
- 18:55Speaker 10: Of course, Johnny, but lake, I'll have some drinks brought
- 19:01Speaker 10: in and planet of the ball between now and when
- 19:04Speaker 10: we put on the port.
- 19:08Speaker 7: Yes, Miss Ransom, Yes, captain one of the men one
- 19:13Speaker 7: of the crew names McCarty. Yes, it looked like appendicitist man,
- 19:17Speaker 7: and I took the liberty of sending him ashore in
- 19:19Speaker 7: the cruiser.
- 19:20Speaker 2: It'll get there long before weekend.
- 19:21Speaker 5: Of course, Captain, you've done exactly right.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Why I'm not so sure that Hi, Johnny mccartty, huh, short,
- 19:28Speaker 2: dark with a scar on his chin. Yes, sir, they've
- 19:31Speaker 2: already left it. What, yes, sir, tend to one that
- 19:34Speaker 2: McCatty is a man I want, john Nellie. We gotta
- 19:36Speaker 2: stop a radio call at the cruise that brought no response,
- 19:41Speaker 2: and I had a sneaking suspicion the skipper of it
- 19:43Speaker 2: had a gun in his back, a gun held by
- 19:45Speaker 2: the supposedly sick mccartty, and the yacht, despite a size
- 19:49Speaker 2: and power, could never catch up with that cruiser in
- 19:50Speaker 2: a thousand years. If you're right, mister Dollar, we'll radio
- 19:53Speaker 2: to the coast guard. He intercept it. But I couldn't
- 19:55Speaker 2: be sure that I was right, And then I noticed
- 19:57Speaker 2: the speedboat slung between debits on the yachts.
- 19:59Speaker 10: After of course, Tommy and I'll go after the mid
- 20:02Speaker 10: Oh no you won't, yes, please?
- 20:05Speaker 6: No?
- 20:08Speaker 2: Then six say, ten minutes later, however long it took
- 20:11Speaker 2: to get the speedboat overside. Christ Mate and I were
- 20:13Speaker 2: tearing across the ocean in pursuit of the cruiser. That
- 20:17Speaker 2: cruiser will do an even twenty knots if he opens
- 20:19Speaker 2: your wife, mister dollar, but she's no match for this baby,
- 20:22Speaker 2: and pour it on. Come on, you see him yet, sure, dude,
- 20:26Speaker 2: get ahead, Yeah, yeah, I see him too, But where's
- 20:28Speaker 2: the snipper mc cord.
- 20:30Speaker 4: He's up in the bridge a.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Load like god, that pump of smoke he's shooting at.
- 20:33Speaker 6: It said, hang on, I'm gonna swerve around.
- 20:35Speaker 2: But you've never hit us at this range any height,
- 20:37Speaker 2: not low. He might get lucky. You got a gun
- 20:39Speaker 2: to answer him. No, it was a very christo us
- 20:41Speaker 2: it for shooting up to spets players. Where is it
- 20:44Speaker 2: this cabinet under the dash? You see it? Yeah right,
- 20:49Speaker 2: it's no match for a thirty eight. But if you
- 20:51Speaker 2: can swerve us in close enough, keep swerving right. He
- 20:55Speaker 2: look having the reload and get us in there passed
- 20:58Speaker 2: there we go.
- 21:03Speaker 5: Hard.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Yeah, you're gone. You got him? Come on, you mean
- 21:08Speaker 2: not no, low, you're going right here washing he's changing
- 21:12Speaker 2: the port. Hey, you're right, he's.
- 21:14Speaker 5: He's turnning it on.
- 21:30Speaker 2: I kind of pieced things together after the yacht, the
- 21:32Speaker 2: Hilamara picked us up. My sheerluck, my shot with a
- 21:36Speaker 2: flare gun had struck mccartty Hollong. He was badly burning
- 21:39Speaker 2: and after the smash up, the mate had pulled me
- 21:41Speaker 2: out of the drink. By then the yacht caught up
- 21:43Speaker 2: with this.
- 21:45Speaker 10: And did you know what he was doing, Johnny, that
- 21:47Speaker 10: man who called himself McCarty, Oh high, Hi, hell. He
- 21:52Speaker 10: smuggling narcotics that he picked up in China.
- 21:55Speaker 5: He knew he'd never get through customs when we came
- 21:57Speaker 5: to port, so he stole.
- 21:58Speaker 10: The keep Star just long enough to make sure the
- 22:01Speaker 10: cruiser would come out to us.
- 22:02Speaker 5: He knew I'd send for somebody.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I get it, And he played sick to
- 22:06Speaker 2: go back on the cruiser. That way he'd avoid customs
- 22:09Speaker 2: and the police.
- 22:09Speaker 10: Yeah, hello, locked up and after the way you hit
- 22:13Speaker 10: him with that player, Well now he is sick, don it.
- 22:20Speaker 10: He didn't have to get him into adopt him. Gee, Johnny,
- 22:25Speaker 10: you and I could cruise around and as well, it
- 22:31Speaker 10: will be two or three days before we get to pork.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Three days and what a three days? But oh well,
- 22:48Speaker 2: expensive con total including transportation back to higher two hundred
- 22:51Speaker 2: and thirty dollars a year, remarks. It's funny, isn't he.
- 22:56Speaker 2: You never know what you're going to get into when
- 22:58Speaker 2: you take on even the most rude teen kind of case. Youers, truly,
- 23:03Speaker 2: Johnny Dark.
- 23:28Speaker 6: Yours, truly, Johnny Dollar is Starry Bob Bailey originates in
- 23:32Speaker 6: Hollywood and is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone, who
- 23:36Speaker 6: also wrote today's story heard in our cast where Virginia Gregg,
- 23:40Speaker 6: Jack Stratton, Barney Phillips, Jack Moyles, and Frank Gristoll be
- 23:44Speaker 6: sure to join us next week, same time and stations,
- 23:47Speaker 6: or another exciting story of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar.
- 23:58Speaker 2: This is Roy Rowans.
- 24:51Speaker 12: Johnny Dollar has come to you through the worldwide facilities
- 24:54Speaker 12: of the United States Armed Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 25:57Speaker 6: This is Andrew J. Graham, author of the webs for
- 26:00Speaker 6: the series Oh and a Man of His Wife.
- 26:02Speaker 12: You're listening to the great detectives of old time.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Radio welcome back. Well, it was a very interesting story.
- 26:18Speaker 1: I guess a reason to like Johnny Doler is not
- 26:21Speaker 1: only who and what he likes, but what he doesn't like.
- 26:24Speaker 1: And I could definitely appreciate hislick of the insurance agent.
- 26:29Speaker 1: And this was a good story. There was a bit
- 26:31Speaker 1: of quirkiness in and then a small bit of mystery
- 26:35Speaker 1: and then a nice, big action pack chas scene. So
- 26:39Speaker 1: really got a lot into this limited amount of time,
- 26:45Speaker 1: a very action packed to twenty plus minutes. Only the
- 26:49Speaker 1: disappointing thing is Virginia greg didn't get to do a
- 26:52Speaker 1: whole lot with her character, just basically a fairly nice
- 26:56Speaker 1: but if but bored rich girl. At any rate, a
- 27:01Speaker 1: very solid episode. Well, now we do turn to some
- 27:04Speaker 1: listener comments and feedback regarding some recent episodes of Yours
- 27:09Speaker 1: Truly Johnny Dollar. But first some words from those who
- 27:13Speaker 1: supported the show. Lee writes in, Hi, Adam, I really
- 27:17Speaker 1: enjoy your great Detectives podcast. Well, thanks so much.
- 27:21Speaker 4: Well.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Now regarding the episode The Midnight Sun Matter episode one
- 27:28Speaker 1: six six ' nine, in which Johnny flies a plane
- 27:34Speaker 1: full of dynamite, Matt says, or excuse me, Don says,
- 27:39Speaker 1: as the kids used to say yours truly Johnny Dollar
- 27:42Speaker 1: is the Bomb. Heather says it was definitely different, but
- 27:47Speaker 1: I was still on the edge of my seat. Marcia says,
- 27:50Speaker 1: different but enjoyable, and then just a couple words of
- 27:54Speaker 1: support for Johnny Dollar in general, love Johnny Dollar and
- 27:57Speaker 1: Johnny Dollar rocks. And going back a little bit further,
- 28:03Speaker 1: we also have an email regarding the Price of Fame matter.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Yosefa emails in out a little behind in Johnny Dollar
- 28:11Speaker 1: episodes and just listen to the Price of Fame Matter
- 28:13Speaker 1: with Vincent Price. I really enjoyed it. Listening to Vincent
- 28:17Speaker 1: Price and Bob Bailey go back and forth throughout the
- 28:20Speaker 1: episode made for great theater. In my opinion, may be
- 28:22Speaker 1: the best acted Johnny A. Dollar episode i've heard. The
- 28:26Speaker 1: ending was a little obvious in my opinion, but the
- 28:28Speaker 1: story was strong as the characters travel the globe searching
- 28:31Speaker 1: for pricess painting. I actually felt the French seat thief
- 28:35Speaker 1: sounded a little bit like a poor man's Peter Lorrie.
- 28:37Speaker 1: It got me thinking what a great cast that would
- 28:39Speaker 1: be if both Laurie and Price did a show together
- 28:43Speaker 1: with Bob Bailey. The only problem I had with the
- 28:47Speaker 1: episode is that they laid it on a little thick
- 28:50Speaker 1: with the compliments about Price during the episodes, they made
- 28:53Speaker 1: him sound like the most interesting man in the world.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Was it part of the deal that they had to
- 28:57Speaker 1: promote Price so heavinly Didtional radio programs such as Johnny
- 29:02Speaker 1: Dollar generally bring in special guests to play themselves in shows.
- 29:05Speaker 1: How come the writers decide to bring in Price? Now?
- 29:08Speaker 1: Was he promoting something? Thanks for all your hard work, Joe, Well,
- 29:13Speaker 1: thanks so much, Joe. We have limited knowledge about the
- 29:18Speaker 1: motivations behind particular episodes. Even during the Golden Age of Hollywood,
- 29:25Speaker 1: you didn't generally tune in to Sam Spade and find
- 29:30Speaker 1: that Jimmy Stewart was guest starring. So much of the
- 29:35Speaker 1: guest acting done in Golden age radio programs was of
- 29:41Speaker 1: a character actor the Howard mcneers and Virginia Greggs. It
- 29:45Speaker 1: just didn't happen with any sort of regularity that you
- 29:51Speaker 1: would have a big Hollywood store or like Price coming
- 29:56Speaker 1: on the program. And while Price was constantly in films
- 30:00Speaker 1: and on television, I doubt that there was any sort
- 30:03Speaker 1: of promotional deal going on radio was in decline. With
- 30:09Speaker 1: so much of that audience share going towards television, even
- 30:15Speaker 1: in nineteen fifty eight. I really think that the only
- 30:19Speaker 1: reason Price would have done it is a love of
- 30:22Speaker 1: the genre and perhaps of the show in general, and
- 30:26Speaker 1: so really a very big rarity in the golden age
- 30:30Speaker 1: of radio that you'll have somebody you know, other than
- 30:35Speaker 1: other than just one of those regular radio guest stars
- 30:39Speaker 1: make an appearance and on a show that had always
- 30:43Speaker 1: I've been fighting against the odds. Yeah, it may have
- 30:45Speaker 1: been a bit over exuberant in praise in Vincent Price,
- 30:49Speaker 1: but he really was a remarkable man with a remarkable career.
- 30:54Speaker 1: As for Peter Lourie, it would be interesting if they
- 30:57Speaker 1: could have gotten him. Laurie had hit the decline point
- 31:02Speaker 1: in his career, which was a really sad time. He
- 31:05Speaker 1: was a really unique talent and it would have been
- 31:08Speaker 1: fun if they had been able to get him in
- 31:12Speaker 1: the mix as well. By that, we'll actually do it
- 31:15Speaker 1: for today. We'll be back tomorrow with Dragnett and next
- 31:19Speaker 1: Friday another episode of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. In the meantime,
