- 0:06(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14In our current series, Imagining Work, we're asking
- 0:17a question.
- 0:18What story about work am I living in?
- 0:21Because not every story about work squares with
- 0:23the story about work that God is telling
- 0:25on the pages of the Bible.
- 0:27We took our last few episodes to look
- 0:29at a few stories that are powerful in
- 0:31our cultural moment and the way those can
- 0:33shape us and cause us to live them
- 0:35out in ways that we might not want
- 0:37them to.
- 0:38Now, we're going to pivot and look at
- 0:39the story of Scripture, the story that God
- 0:41is telling on the pages of the Bible,
- 0:43and look at how can we get into
- 0:45that story?
- 0:46How can we live inside of that one
- 0:48so that we live that story out instead
- 0:50in our life at work and in the
- 0:52rest of our life too?
- 0:56I want to start by talking about the
- 0:57power of images because one of the simplest
- 1:00definitions of story is a sequence of images
- 1:04in time that are meaningful in relation to
- 1:07each other.
- 1:09So just take a moment and imagine you're
- 1:10looking at a picture of a seed, and
- 1:13then you're looking at a picture of a
- 1:14sapling, and then you're looking at a picture
- 1:17of a great tree.
- 1:19Well that's a story, right?
- 1:21You can connect, you can make meaning in
- 1:23the connection between the first image and the
- 1:25second one and the third one, and there's
- 1:26a sequence of time and it tells something.
- 1:28Jesus used the image of seed and of
- 1:31tree many times, and we're grateful for the
- 1:34way that that's helped us understand the kingdom
- 1:36of God and life in the kingdom of
- 1:38God.
- 1:39So images have this power to convey meaning
- 1:41and to help us make sense of our
- 1:43lives.
- 1:43Like we talked about, we live inside of
- 1:46narrative structures as human beings.
- 1:47That's the way we make decisions.
- 1:49That's the way we make sense of things.
- 1:51That's the way we navigate our lives, even
- 1:52subconsciously.
- 1:54And so we want to take some time
- 1:55to make the subconscious conscious, to reflect on
- 1:58the power of images and the specific images
- 2:01that have power in our lives.
- 2:04So I want to just give a couple
- 2:05examples here of images that can haunt us
- 2:09and images that can draw us into beauty
- 2:11and into life.
- 2:13And you can probably think of examples of
- 2:14both these kind of images from your own
- 2:16experience.
- 2:17We shouldn't be too quick to brush off
- 2:19an image that strikes us, even if we're
- 2:21not sure why.
- 2:22There's something meaningful there, whether the tone is
- 2:25dark or light.
- 2:27Whether it's an image from a film or
- 2:30a painting, even if it's just a moment
- 2:32in real life that we're noticing in nature
- 2:34or with other people.
- 2:36If something strikes us, if something inside of
- 2:39us is moved, we should pause.
- 2:41We should attend to that.
- 2:42So it's going to help us navigate our
- 2:44life with God.
- 2:45God might be speaking to us through those
- 2:47images and through those moments.
- 2:49And other voices might be speaking to us
- 2:50too.
- 2:51And so my first example of an image
- 2:53that has haunted me comes from a film,
- 2:57a 2001 thriller called Donnie Darko.
- 3:00And if you know the film, you probably
- 3:02already know what image I'm referring to.
- 3:04And that's the character Frank, who always wears
- 3:07a rabbit suit.
- 3:09Now, if you haven't seen the film, you
- 3:10might be like a rabbit suit.
- 3:11Like, that doesn't seem so disturbing or whatever.
- 3:15But it's the mask of this rabbit suit.
- 3:17The main character, Donnie Darko, has visions of
- 3:20this character named Frank, who always appears in
- 3:22a rabbit suit, almost like a Halloween costume.
- 3:25But the mask is arresting.
- 3:28The teeth are exposed in this permanent manic
- 3:31grin.
- 3:32The ears are twisted.
- 3:34The eyes are misshapen.
- 3:36And the first minute you see it on
- 3:38screen, you just stop and stare because of
- 3:42the power that it evokes.
- 3:45It's the kind of image that you can't
- 3:47unsee.
- 3:49I was so moved and in a way
- 3:52haunted by this film after I saw it
- 3:55that I do what I often did.
- 3:57I did what I often do.
- 4:00I looked up the Wikipedia article about it
- 4:02and I read an entertainment weekly interview with
- 4:05the writer, director Richard Kelly, and he actually
- 4:08intended for this exact effect to happen with
- 4:11the mask.
- 4:12This is a quote from that interview.
- 4:14I was very adamant that it had to
- 4:15make an impact.
- 4:17It has to disturb people.
- 4:18It has to make the audience sit up
- 4:20in their seat and have a really intense
- 4:22response.
- 4:24And Richard Kelly and the costume designer who
- 4:26made that mask obviously succeeded in that intention,
- 4:30that this mask would arrest people in their
- 4:32tracks and stick with them.
- 4:34It's the kind of image that you can't
- 4:35unsee.
- 4:38And that can be true in a haunting
- 4:39way, sometimes even in a way that we
- 4:41wish wasn't true for certain images in our
- 4:43lives.
- 4:44But it can also be true of beautiful
- 4:46images.
- 4:47There are images of beauty that strike us
- 4:49and in a good way also becomes something
- 4:52that we can't unsee.
- 4:54An example of this in my life is
- 4:56from the town where I now make my
- 4:58home, Aurora, Illinois, and there's a mural in
- 5:03the downtown.
- 5:04It's simply called Alexa.
- 5:06It's a painting of a woman, mostly tones
- 5:08of gray, black and white.
- 5:10But her blouse is green and behind her
- 5:13head, there's this golden circle like a halo
- 5:15from a traditional Christian icon.
- 5:18But it's her face that's the most moving.
- 5:21If you look at it, just etched across
- 5:23her features, there's this pain and longing and
- 5:27determination all together.
- 5:30And then behind her back, she's holding.
- 5:32You almost don't notice it at first.
- 5:33This bouquet of flowers, their shoulders back.
- 5:37She faces the world.
- 5:39I looked up the story of this image
- 5:41as well.
- 5:42It's painted by a woman from the Netherlands.
- 5:46Her name is JDL.
- 5:48She goes by her initials for Judith Delue.
- 5:52And it's actually a painting of her friend,
- 5:54Alexa, who has multiple sclerosis and is a
- 5:57single mom.
- 5:58And about how she's faced the world in
- 6:00the midst of the pain of that debilitating
- 6:02disease with this kind of grace and determination
- 6:06and beauty.
- 6:10And when I first saw that mural, I
- 6:11couldn't unsee it.
- 6:13And I'm really thankful for that.
- 6:17So as we turn towards the images of
- 6:18scripture, what would it be like if those
- 6:21images had that kind of presence in our
- 6:23lives?
- 6:25If we couldn't unsee the images that the
- 6:28Bible gives us of life with God and
- 6:30life in his kingdom.
- 6:32And I think that's possible.
- 6:33I think that God gives us the images
- 6:35of scripture for a reason so that we
- 6:37can enter into them.
- 6:40And the specific Christian tradition that is perhaps
- 6:43done the most work about the power of
- 6:45images is the Church of the East, sometimes
- 6:48called the Orthodox Church, particularly within their tradition
- 6:51of painting icons.
- 6:54And so I want to read a quote
- 6:55from Archbishop Callistos, where he was an English
- 6:58bishop and scholar from the Orthodox Church.
- 7:01And he passed away somewhat recently in 2022.
- 7:06But this is what he says about icons.
- 7:09He says, an icon is not simply a
- 7:11religious picture designed to arouse appropriate emotions in
- 7:14the beholder.
- 7:15It is one of the ways whereby God
- 7:17is revealed to man.
- 7:19Through icons, the Orthodox Christian receives a vision
- 7:23of the spiritual world.
- 7:27I just I just love that, that when
- 7:29you're looking at an icon, it's like looking
- 7:30through a window to the reality of God's
- 7:34kingdom.
- 7:35The spiritual world made manifest in paint and
- 7:38canvas right before our eyes.
- 7:40The Orthodox Church has given us so many
- 7:43beautiful icons.
- 7:44If you've never had a chance to look
- 7:45at them, I'd encourage you to visit an
- 7:47Orthodox Church near you or at least look
- 7:49up some icons online.
- 7:52And that idea that an icon can be
- 7:53how God reveals himself to us is really
- 7:56where the power comes from.
- 7:58Now, for myself as a Christian with the
- 8:00heritage of the Reformation, I believe that there's
- 8:02a unique way God has revealed himself through
- 8:04scripture.
- 8:05That's not true in the same way of
- 8:06icons painted within Christian tradition.
- 8:09But scripture gives us so many images.
- 8:12It's inviting us to use our imaginations and
- 8:14indeed to paint and make images as well.
- 8:16And those images, if they're faithful to scripture,
- 8:19can still minister what God is revealing there.
- 8:23And so that's what we want to do
- 8:24with the rest of the series is turn
- 8:26our attention towards the images that God gives
- 8:28us in scripture.
- 8:29We have eight images of work, and I'm
- 8:32just going to read them out.
- 8:34And then we'll talk about how we'll be
- 8:36looking at each of them.
- 8:38So the first image is gardener.
- 8:41Then artist.
- 8:44Priest.
- 8:46Builder.
- 8:48King.
- 8:50Friend.
- 8:52Servant.
- 8:54And emissary.
- 8:56I'm really excited about each of these eight
- 8:58images and each of them, as you can
- 9:01probably imagine, listening to them is true of
- 9:04workers.
- 9:05So we can ask, how do I connect
- 9:07with this image?
- 9:08How could I live out this image myself
- 9:10in my own work life?
- 9:12But each of them is also true of
- 9:14Jesus and embodied in his work in his
- 9:16ministry.
- 9:18And that's the image that I want to
- 9:19leave us with here just at the end
- 9:21of this episode from Paul's letter to the
- 9:23Colossians in chapter one verse 15.
- 9:26He writes about Jesus.
- 9:28He is the image of the invisible God.
- 9:33And then in verse 19 for God was
- 9:35pleased to have all his fullness dwell in
- 9:38him.
- 9:40God is invisible.
- 9:41We can't see him even as disciples of
- 9:43Jesus.
- 9:43We have faith that truth and goodness and
- 9:45beauty and life.
- 9:46Those are all emanating from God coming from
- 9:48him.
- 9:48That's the place to find them is in
- 9:50him.
- 9:50They can feel beyond our grasp because we
- 9:53can't see God.
- 9:54He's hidden.
- 9:54He's invisible.
- 9:56But the way that he's made himself accessible
- 9:58to us is in the face of Jesus.
- 10:01He is the image of the invisible God
- 10:03and we can see what God is like
- 10:05and we can access that holiness that life
- 10:08that love by looking at Jesus.
- 10:11So that's the most important thing we're going
- 10:13to do with each of these images is
- 10:14ask how do we see Jesus in this
- 10:17image of Scripture and how can that shape
- 10:19our mind and our imagination when we think
- 10:21about work and the rest of life?
- 10:28Lord Jesus, we want to see you.
- 10:30We want to see the images that you
- 10:33give us in Scripture clearly.
- 10:35We want to welcome them into our hearts.
- 10:38Help us to see them in a way
- 10:39where we can't unsee them and help us
- 10:43most of all to see you do your
- 10:46work in us as we do our work
- 10:48with you.
- 10:54Thanks for listening.
