- 0:07Your neighborhood tactical service station welcomes you to another baseball broadcast.
- 0:11Brought to you direct from Wrigley Field by permission of the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals
- 0:15to stimulate interest in our national game and in your local team.
- 0:18And now out to Wrigley Field and Hal Dutton who is going to give us some inside information on today's game
- 0:22right from the playing field. Take it away Hal Dutton.
- 0:25Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. Good afternoon from Wrigley Field, the home of the Cubs in Chicago.
- 0:31Where the Cubs come home this afternoon to open a vital four game series with the St. Louis Cardinals
- 0:36and where we're on the field for a little pre-game broadcast looking over a crowd of 20,000 people,
- 0:4215 at least, probably 20,000 before the game is underway and a real welcome home crowd.
- 0:48The Cardinals are finishing their infield practice. The weather today is rather amazing.
- 0:53It started out this morning cloudy and finally rained a little.
- 0:56Right now a nice strong northeast wind has cleared things up. It's pleasantly cool out here.
- 1:01The sun is out and it's going to be quite an afternoon.
- 1:04The Cubs come home from a trip that while it was nowhere near as successful as a pre-season road trip,
- 1:11were still quite a trip on the road and yes they lost several tough ball games,
- 1:17very tough ball games and some of the fans have wondered, oh you know questions have come to me time and again.
- 1:22What's wrong with the Cubs and this, that and the other thing?
- 1:25Well my answer has always been that as far as I can tell, nothing's matter with the Cubs.
- 1:29We might not have been hitting for the moment or something like that.
- 1:32So I've asked a young man, a very redheaded young man to come over here and chat with me this afternoon
- 1:37and tell you a little bit of the inside of something that perhaps doesn't ordinarily come to your mind.
- 1:42Along this line, this man is Johnny Gordon, the coach of the Cubs who we've talked to before
- 1:47and one of the coaches' chief jobs is not only to help develop young players,
- 1:53keep them going and correcting balls, keep the ball players head up and keep them going good.
- 1:58And I just want to ask Johnny Gordon a few questions along the line of just how it is.
- 2:03It's a pretty tough job when they're going and it gets a little bit tough like it is now with the picking and fielding greats
- 2:07and hitting and going bad.
- 2:08Is it a little bit tough for some of those youngsters?
- 2:11Certainly it is tough Hal, but I can answer that question in this respect.
- 2:15A baseball player's life is the same as any other individual in any line of business.
- 2:21No matter what profession, any outsider might follow outside of baseball, he leads with reversion.
- 2:27And I claim this, Hal, that in order to be successful, one should try and encourage an individual.
- 2:35When he's leading with reverse, in other words, a ball player that's going out here, for instance, any ball player,
- 2:41for instance, comes out here and makes four base hits in one day and we win the ball game.
- 2:48Naturally he doesn't need any encouragement because he knows he's delivered.
- 2:51That's a thicker game.
- 2:52Otherwise, if he's spent the difficulties on the ball field,
- 2:56he'll suck out a couple of times as men in running and scoring positions.
- 2:59That's when I claim that color needs attention.
- 3:01It needs a little encouragement.
- 3:02None of it needs encouragement, Hal, when we are delivered and we know when we are delivered.
- 3:07Therefore, I would like to make a point of one thing.
- 3:11The ball players that represent and wear a club uniform need encouragement,
- 3:17not only from the manager or the coaches, they need it likewise from the fans that attend these ball games out here.
- 3:26And one word of encouragement or a little applause,
- 3:30when a man enters that batter's box that he stuck out the time before,
- 3:34it's more good than to cheer that boy, antagonize him.
- 3:38He knows he's failed.
- 3:39Why not try and encourage that individual?
- 3:41He's wearing a club uniform representing your city.
- 3:44And I claim this, that a ball player on the road away from home does not expect any encouragement,
- 3:50nor does the fans that cheer him or give him the raspberry use the clangy.
- 3:56That does not bother that ball player, Hal, but it really does at home.
- 4:00It really discourages him when he fails to deliver to have the home crowd to ride him.
- 4:06Then you mean that even here in the professional circles where fellows are paid for playing ball
- 4:10and thinking they're living at it, that a matter of encouragement and the crowd reaction is really a very vital thing in regard to their playing?
- 4:18Absolutely that, absolutely that.
- 4:20On the road it does not bother them. They expect them. Sometimes they invite that.
- 4:25Sometimes they play a little better on the road when they're getting it in the next step.
- 4:28That's right, but at home really they like a little encouragement from the home fans,
- 4:32especially when they're meeting with reversers.
- 4:35Have our boys been a little bit down the last two weeks or so because of lack of hitting?
- 4:39They think that they're going to start finding those good free throws?
- 4:41They feel that way, absolutely.
- 4:43I noticed that chatting with them before the game during practice just now.
- 4:46They seem to feel that, well, they're home now and there's some change.
- 4:49They've got to bring another change and they're just about ready.
- 4:52Well, Johnny, I wanted to find out from you.
- 4:55I might let the fans know that the first time I heard those sentiments spoken was when you spoke them just now.
- 5:00I wasn't prepared to rehearse. I wanted to know just how you felt itself.
- 5:04That's why I put the arm cold here. You didn't even know you were going on the air until you started out to hit the infield into your practices.
- 5:10And it's a pleasure and you've done something interesting and well worthwhile.
- 5:14I want to thank you for it, John, and wish you and the Cubs all the luck in the world.
- 5:18Thanks a lot, Hal.
- 5:19Thank you, Johnny.
- 5:20Johnny Cardin, Logan Ford Red himself, the idol of the Elks Club at Logan Ford Indiana,
- 5:26who is the coach of the Cubs and is giving us something well worthwhile.
- 5:30Now Pat Falk is here to give us our first lineup of the home day.
- 5:33So let's have a pat.
- 5:34And that is for St. Louis, Batting Order, Moore Center,
- 5:37Brish Seconds, J. Martin Wright, Mettler's Luck, Mines First,
- 5:42David Kutz, Erosia Short, Garibaldi Third, and Wimpert,
- 5:48the pitcher, for Chicago, DeFatty, Davis, and Hartnett.
- 5:53Batting Order, the Land Center, Allen Left, Herman Second,
- 5:58Hartnett Kutz, Demery Wright, Mark Third, Jurgis George,
- 6:03Wimpert, and Davis, the pitcher.
- 6:05Thank you, Pat. Thank you very, very much.
- 6:07Now we really know the Cubs are home and we're on the way,
- 6:10and we get that announcement from Pat Falk.
- 6:12Now, ladies and gentlemen, the umpires are going to get out there pretty soon.
- 6:15It's a little bit tense on the way up, but I think it would be a good idea
- 6:18if I got an early start.
- 6:19With that in mind, George, how's my bodyguard getting along up there?
- 6:23All right?
- 6:24He looks pretty tough up there, but I guess that's all right.
- 6:27He's got a day today, a mess day.
- 6:29So if you'll do a little quickly to do the oil on the way up,
- 6:33I think he'll be swell, George.
- 6:35Okay?
- 6:37There's one thing you'll notice about most motorists,
- 6:40a really careful motorist isn't careful only of how he drives.
- 6:44He's careful of everything about his car.
- 6:47Perhaps that is why so many experienced drivers prefer the new Tektical motor oil.
- 6:51New Tektical motor oil meets their most exacting demand on every count.
- 6:55It's heatproof, full-bodied, and tough.
- 6:59It has the stamina to stand up under the terrific punishment
- 7:02given motor oil in today's faster cars.
- 7:04The tough, clinging film provides safe lubrication every mile of the hottest drive.
- 7:10New Tektical motor oil comes to you in refinery-filled cans.
- 7:13The purity of the Tektical's own solvent refining process makes possible
- 7:17is protected from refinery to use.
- 7:20Every last bit of flan is removed from new Tektical motor oil.
- 7:23It starts circulating and protecting your motor the instant you step on the stop.
- 7:27So start treating your motor to the best today.
- 7:30Drive to your neighbor's Tektical servitation and tell the attendant to drain the crankcase
- 7:34and refill with the new Tektical motor oil.
- 7:37And now while Hal's talking us on his way up to the booth
- 7:40out there at Wrigley Field to bring you this afternoon's baseball game,
- 7:43between the Scorgo Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals,
- 7:46we'll give you the schedule of the other games we play in both leagues this afternoon.
- 7:49First in the American League, the Scorgo White Cubs are playing in St. Louis against the Browns this afternoon.
- 7:55That game will start about 4 o'clock our time.
- 7:58In Detroit, the Tigers take on the Cleveland Indians for another game this afternoon.
- 8:03In that game, the warm-up pitchers for the Indians, Browns, for the Tigers, Bridges.
- 8:09In Boston, the Red Sox take on the league-leading New York Yankees.
- 8:14The batter is nothing in tricky for the Yankees, for the Red Sox, Grove, and Rick Sells.
- 8:19That game has already started in Boston, and at the end of the fourth inning,
- 8:23the Yankees and the Red Sox are tied nothing to nothing.
- 8:27The Washington Senators, playing their home state, take on the Philadelphia Athletics this afternoon.
- 8:33That game has not started, and there are no batteries yet.
- 8:36Now for the National Leagues, at Wrigley Field, the Scorgo Cubs take on the St. Louis Spartans.
- 8:40In the four-game series, under the two points of batteries they've given you by Matt Piper and Hal Cotton,
- 8:45Winford and Davis, the batteries for the cards, the South Dugan-Davison-Hartman.
- 8:50In New York, the Giants are taking on the Boston Bees.
- 8:53That game, at the end of the first half of the third inning, is tied nothing to nothing.
- 8:58The captain and Lopez, the D-battery, the Giants starting the Simmons and the Mancunas.
- 9:03In Philadelphia, the Phillies take on the Brooklyn Dodgers.
- 9:07At the end of the second inning, the Dodgers and the Bells are tied 2-2.
- 9:12Johnson and Wilkins, the Philadelphia batteries.
- 9:15The only other game scheduled today is in Cincinnati between the Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 9:20That is a night game, will be played this evening.
- 9:23Now for a look at the standing of the clubs in both leagues.
- 9:26First in the American League, the New York Yankees are in first position.
- 9:30They've played an even hundred games. Today is the 101st game of their entire season.
- 9:36Of that number, they have won 66 and lost 34.
- 9:41Second place is held by the Cleveland Indians, the Chicago White Sox, 12 games behind.
- 9:46Fourth place, Detroit Tigers, 12 and a half games behind.
- 9:50Fifth, the Boston Red Sox, 13 and a half games behind.
- 9:54Sixth, Washington Senators, 16 and a half.
- 9:57Seven, St. Louis Browns, whom the White Sox played today in St. Louis, 31 games.
- 10:02And in eighth place, the Philadelphia Athletics, 32 and a half games behind.
- 10:06In the National League, the Chicago Cubs are in first place by two decimal points.
- 10:11They've won 59 and lost 38.
- 10:15In second place, the San Francisco Cardinals, who are playing the Cubs with Stanton and Ricky Field,
- 10:19they have a percentage of a athletic lead at two decimal points behind the Chicago Cubs for first place.
- 10:26Sixth place held by the New York Giants, six and a half games behind the Cubs.
- 10:30Fourth place, the Pittsburgh Pirates, eight games.
- 10:33Fifth place, the Cincinnati Reds, 11 and a half.
- 10:36The Boston Bees, 13 and a half.
- 10:39Seven, Philadelphia Phillies, 21.
- 10:43And in eighth place, Brooklyn, 13 and one half games behind the National League leading Chicago Cubs.
- 10:49And now for a look at the counting of the home run.
- 10:52First place, New Gerrit of the Yankees, 33. 32nd, Connachy of the Indians, 31.
- 10:57Third, Fox of the Reds, Fox.
- 11:00Fourth, Melod of the Giants, 21.
- 11:03Now I see that Hal Cotton is ready.
- 11:05And we'll go back to Ricky Field.
- 11:06The baseball game brought to you by permission of the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals
- 11:10to stimulate interest in our national games and in your local teams.
- 11:13Take it, Hal Cotton.
- 11:15The Black Radios gentlemen are the start of all games and the umpires are just a few minutes walking out on the field.
- 11:22The two figures are finishing their warm-ups down here in front of the stands.
- 11:26The Cubs captain is trying to start the dugout and up toward the plate.
- 11:31And we'll be on our way out here in just a moment or two.
- 11:36The lineup, we've got some down there in the field.
- 11:40I don't know where they'd be with, but some people like both of you tuned in right.
- 11:45There comes Leo DeRosa walking up there with the Cardinal lineup.
- 11:48He might give the lineup over again to these people who tuned in late and give them very quickly
- 11:53so as not to run into any activity.
- 11:55The Cubs are running out on the field for the start of the ball game.
- 11:59The Cardinals, Terry Moritz, center.
- 12:01Thank you, first and second.
- 12:03Pepper Martin, right.
- 12:05Joe Medwick, left.
- 12:07Johnny Mai, first.
- 12:09Bud Davis, there.
- 12:11Virgil Davis, captain.
- 12:13Leo DeRosa, short.
- 12:15Art Garibaldi, third.
- 12:17And Jim Winford, the fifth.
- 12:19For the Cubs, Jordan's the land center.
- 12:21Ethan Allen, left.
- 12:23Billy Homme, second.
- 12:24Gabby Hartnett, captain.
- 12:26Jimmie Frank, Jimmie Wright.
- 12:28Stanley Hatchford.
- 12:29Billy Jogos, short.
- 12:31Charlie Grim, third.
- 12:33The umpires, which you probably heard over the PA system,
- 12:35Camelia at the plate, short at first and permanent third.
- 12:39And we're just about ready to go for the start of this ball game.
- 12:43With Terry Moore right-handed hitter up there at the plate to start the first inning.
- 12:56Davis winds up toes and Moore takes a fast strike over the heart of the plate about way top.
- 13:01One strike on Moore.
- 13:08And Kurt winds up throws again.
- 13:10The hitter hits one hard down to Charlie Grim.
- 13:12He troops it off the top of the ground and then runs over and steps on first base anyway.
- 13:16But umpire, short, located there at first base,
- 13:20had raised his arm in the air indicating the ball was caught on the line for the first out of the first inning,
- 13:26bringing Frankie Fritz to back.
- 13:28Frankie Fritz is around in his hitting.
- 13:30Ball down the middle, way tie.
- 13:32One strike on manager Fritz.
- 13:37Davis again winds up throws trying to get the curveball wide for ball one.
- 13:42So it's one ball and one strike on Fritz.
- 13:45One and one to count.
- 13:51Davis throws once more for the second ball.
- 13:53It's wide across the way.
- 13:54So it's counted two balls and one strike on Frankie Fritz. Two and one.
- 14:06Davis throws again for ball three.
- 14:08It's inside and low and so the count is three balls and one strike on Fritz.
- 14:13Three and one.
- 14:19Davis takes that easy wind up, pitches once more and ball four comes in pretty wide.
- 14:24He gets first to base on ball.
- 14:25Puts him on first base with one out of the first inning and Pepper Martin.
- 14:30Good old Pep up there to play.
- 14:32There's your boyfriend up there, Jim.
- 14:35Jim Snyder, that auto racing fella is up there in the booth with us.
- 14:39We were down having a chat with Pepper Martin who's a big midget owner himself.
- 14:43Davis throws the first one to Martin and it's inside of the shot for ball one.
- 14:48That's right handed of course.
- 14:53And Gert waits there for the next time from Martin.
- 14:55That swings around as he gets it.
- 14:58Takes a look at first base.
- 15:00Then throws and the hitter swings in a high bounder.
- 15:02Billy Herman's racing far to his left.
- 15:04Gets it, throws to second and the runner there is out for the second out.
- 15:08Billy went a long ways over to his left to get that high bounder
- 15:11and threw to Jurgis at second base to force Fritz for the second out,
- 15:15leaving Martin on first base with two outs in the first inning.
- 15:19And Joe Medwick, the cardinal left fielder and a great hitter up there to play.
- 15:24Joe is also a right handed batsman.
- 15:27Among other things he hit a ball into right field late there against the wind
- 15:31and batting right handed before the ball game today.
- 15:34Batting practice.
- 15:37Davis watches the man at first and pitches.
- 15:39And Joe hits the ball in the right field but Devery is going back fast
- 15:42and makes the catch for the third out.
- 15:44And so it's no runs, no hits, one man left on base in the first half of the first inning
- 15:51of this opening game of the big series with the Cardinals.
- 15:54And the score is nothing to nothing as the Cubs come to bat in the last half of the first inning
- 16:00with a somewhat juggled lineup from that we've seen here.
- 16:05World Bats starting to do a little taping of people out here.
- 16:10Well the out of town people are getting faced in the ballpark.
- 16:17There are a lot of people from out of town here.
- 16:19We stopped downstairs by several of them from all over the middle west
- 16:24who come in here to see this, including a lot of people who came up from St. Louis.
- 16:28They just couldn't wait to see those Cardinals get home.
- 16:30I hope they go out when they get home.
- 16:33The Cards have had a good finish to their road trip.
- 16:37The two clubs were just the opposite on the road.
- 16:40The Cubs started off winning and then ended up on the short end
- 16:43whereas the Cardinals started off losing and ended up winning pretty well on the road.
- 16:50Both of them came close to splitting even on the tip.
- 16:57And here is Ogne Galanisat back to his old leadoff position.
- 17:02He's a left-handed hitter against right-handed pitching
- 17:05and that's the way he's batting against Jim Winford, a great big, rangy fellow.
- 17:09And he throws and he hit a bunch of ball down towards first base.
- 17:12He goes over to get it and throws the ball to Mize who started it and then backs up to take the throw.
- 17:17And it's a perfect sacrifice by Allen by going from Winford to Mize
- 17:23for the first out of the first inning, putting Galanisat on second base.
- 17:27And bringing Billy Herman to that. Billy Herman in the Cubs,
- 17:31second baseman, now the right-handed hitter.
- 17:43Bill takes a look around the umpire and then makes him the pitcher who threw some dirt out
- 17:50and threw a pebble off the pitcher's mouth.
- 17:53Now he steps down the slab and gets ready.
- 17:57And pitchers on the hitters swing, get a throw, bowler down to third base line with his ball.
- 18:01Garibaldi grabs it, throws it over to DeRoz and it goes on around the infield.
- 18:05But Mize returning it to the catcher and but throws it off the pitcher.
- 18:09Winford gets it, standing back in the grass back to mom.
- 18:12Walks slowly up, picks up the rod and backdrops it and takes his place on the slab once more.
- 18:18Getting his time to pitch the next one to Billy Herman.
- 18:21One strike on Bill. Ready once more, throws.
- 18:27And Bill takes the ball to the inside and blows.
- 18:30So the county is one and one. One ball and one strike on Herman.
- 18:38These two teams are really battling it out for the league lead now.
- 18:41If everyone wins, it's in first place tonight.
- 18:44So Winford's ready once more, throws.
- 18:47And the hitter swings it, it's low bounder into the infield.
- 18:49Winford comes in, takes it on the first half, throws the first.
- 18:52And Herman is out easily for the second out of the first inning, moving the land to third base.
- 19:01So it's two out of the first inning for the Cubs.
- 19:04The land is on third base and Gabby Hartnett is at best.
- 19:08Gabby gets quite a good lead into the sand as he steps up there to the plate.
- 19:28And pitch his rod once more.
- 19:34Wade to Hartnett. There he steps there. Winford takes quite a while getting his time.
- 19:40Finally he starts his wind up.
- 19:43Fishes and it's a strike over the inside corner above knee-high.
- 19:46And Gabby comes back and points at that ball with a foot inside the plate.
- 19:50He draws his bat along there inside the batter's box.
- 19:54He's telling up by a finale that he thinks he gave him a bad decision on that.
- 19:58They just stand there looking away and the foot Davis reaches down and dusts off his shoes where Gabby puts dust over it by straightening his bat there.
- 20:07Finally Gabby goes back. He's still talking a little bit long distance with Nellie.
- 20:12In the meantime Davis has walked out to talk to pitcher.
- 20:16And finally Dave goes back to tell Gabby a few things.
- 20:19And they stand there face to face with Gabby getting very, very red in the next department.
- 20:24And while he tells Dave what he thought about that one.
- 20:30One thing about Leo though, you notice that the umpires usually take what Gabby has to say.
- 20:35They figure that if he thinks he has a spot he'll spot. He got over those days when he used to holler about everything.
- 20:41And also he does it in such a way that while he puts on something of a show against the umpire at the same time what he says doesn't get him very met.
- 20:49Gabby stepped out of the box but he's back up there again with the count of one strike.
- 20:57Winter takes his usual long time to finally wind up the throw. Gabby swings it along.
- 21:02It's into the land out in left center and Hendrick's waiting for it. He has it and it's free on.
- 21:08High fly into the wind into left center. Without that strong wind from the north, northeast, that ball would have been way, way over that wall.
- 21:16There it was. The wind held it back as it was now. They're holding all the balls back and batting practice from both clubs and blowing them all around.
- 21:23So it's no runs, no hits. One man left on base in the last half of the first inning.
- 21:28And the score remains nothing to nothing between the Cubs and Cardinals at the end of the first inning of the first game of this series.
- 21:37Stop and think of the hundreds of miles to drive your car every month.
- 21:41That faithful motor under the hood is doing its best to give you carefree driving.
- 21:46You can really help things along by just a little thoughtfulness.
- 21:49Give that hardworking motor the benefit of complete modern motor lubrication.
- 21:54Drain and then refill with new Texaco motor oil.
- 21:57Then see and feel the difference in the performance of the motor in your car.
- 22:06That goes to make it two-pin.
- 22:12Nothing in that big, powerful white job that throws it around.
- 22:17First man to start in the second inning, Donnie Myers, Husky, left-handed hitter, steps back to take the first pitch inside across the way for ball one.
- 22:27I think they're going to start keeping that ball high on Donnie. Maybe I'm wrong.
- 22:31Myers winds up throws again and he hits the ball into left field. Allen is racing over four but he can't reach it.
- 22:37Laps beyond him by the time he recovers it. Myers is tearing for second base and gets him there just ahead of the ball.
- 22:43Two-base hit to left field a place he doesn't ordinarily hit.
- 22:46Allen was letting him free well toward left center because he's ordinarily a full hitter.
- 22:50But he had doubled through left center rather to left field, dead left field for the first hit of the game.
- 22:57Myers is on second base with nobody out in the second inning and Virgil Davis is at bat.
- 23:02Big foot Davis, the Husky right-handed hitting catcher and a dangerous one.
- 23:11Foot steps up there to the plate and Kurt Davis is getting ready to pitch the first one to him.
- 23:20Looks like a second base and throws and the hitter takes the curve ball inside for ball one.
- 23:33One ball caught but he's ready again.
- 23:37Pitches and the hitter started to swing, stopped three quarters of the way through but it was a strike.
- 23:42Caught the outside inside corner up around the shoulder. He was around pretty far on it anyway.
- 23:46So it's one and one. Davis steps off to press, furry the umpire on that position.
- 23:51Finally steps back up to the plate.
- 23:54Without further ado and the pitch is ready once more.
- 23:58Looks back at second base and pitches and the hitter swings and misses a high pass ball or strike two.
- 24:05And it's one ball and two strikes on Davis.
- 24:13Davis swings around and he's ready again.
- 24:21Suddenly wind starts to pick some dust up so Davis steps out of the batting spot.
- 24:25The way the wind was blowing the dust was that the plate just about to turn bald.
- 24:29And that wouldn't help Davis' vision any so he steps out of there until the wind and dust settles.
- 24:36Davis throws again to Davis and slug follows the ball high onto the roof
- 24:42and above him to the right of the plate and it's one and two.
- 24:45Still one ball and two strikes on Fudd Davis.
- 24:58Kurt has the time once more to keep an eye on the runner for pitches
- 25:01and it's a curve ball wide for the second ball taking it two balls and two strikes on Fudd.
- 25:06Two and two to count.
- 25:14One, two.
- 25:15Kurt ready again but just deep up to pitch again the hitter walks out of the box.
- 25:19Come back all the time and Davis has actually started his pitching motion
- 25:24and had to effectively fall off the mound and keep him throwing the ball.
- 25:29It's two and two, two balls and two strikes.
- 25:32And the hitter swings the ball at one back onto the screen or onto the net back of the screen
- 25:36and back of the plate.
- 25:37It's two and two, two balls and two strikes on Davis.
- 25:47He's trying again, throws and verge, falls just one way back into the lower deck,
- 25:52the right of the plate back under the second deck and it's still two and two.
- 26:05Two balls and two strikes.
- 26:07Davis stops to use that big sloppy rousin bag.
- 26:10The hitter's not waiting back there.
- 26:13The hitter's down the net, the hitter's up the plate once more.
- 26:22Davis pitches and the hitter swings in the bottom of the shortstop.
- 26:25Juggas pitches the runner back to second and throws the first.
- 26:28Getting Fudd Davis for the first out of the second inning and holding Mize on second base.
- 26:34So it's one out of the second inning for the Cardinals.
- 26:37Mize still on second base and Leo DeRoscher is up there to play.
- 26:41Well, Leo's been promoted in a batting order.
- 26:44He's hitting seventh now instead of eighth.
- 26:48Right-handed hitter waits to get to the back of second base
- 26:51and throws and the hitter takes a fast strike.
- 26:53Pretty one over the heart of the plate, way caught.
- 26:56Davis, big rangey right-handed throwing.
- 26:58That ball was very low, sidearm delivery.
- 27:04Kurt throws again and it's ball one inside and low.
- 27:06So it's one ball and one strike on DeRoscher.
- 27:10It's one and one.
- 27:21And the fidgeting set, still watching second base,
- 27:24but throws and the hitter hits the ball in the left field for a good base hit.
- 27:27Allen comes in fast, grabs it, he's throwing the ball to the plate
- 27:30and the runner turns around and goes back to third base.
- 27:33Boy, that was fast fielding.
- 27:35Allen came in, grabbed that ball and with the same motion whips it toward the plate
- 27:38and the coach, Mike Gonzales, waves my back to third base
- 27:42because that's nowhere to hit it.
- 27:46Cardinals have runners on first and third, one out in the second inning.
- 27:50And Garibaldi is at bat.
- 27:52Art Garibaldi is a rather small fellow, rather stockly-built,
- 27:57although slim above the waist.
- 28:00He hits the ball with a lot of power and Frankie Bridges is telling me before the game
- 28:05he's been hitting the ball pretty hard lately.
- 28:07He came up some weeks ago from the Cardinals new chain club
- 28:11out there in the Pacific Coast, back to Mentos.
- 28:17He throws now and the hitter takes the curve ball wide for ball one.
- 28:21One ball called.
- 28:23Charlie Root has started to warm up out of the left field bullpen for the Cubs.
- 28:26Chase Davis really experiences a bad inning
- 28:29because until the Cubs get to hitting again where they can overcome the lead,
- 28:34they've got to nurse the pitching along. They've been getting great pitching.
- 28:37They've got to nurse it along very carefully.
- 28:39Davis throws fast to first base.
- 28:41DeRosa is back there.
- 28:43Billy Herman is playing a little bit toward second base and in.
- 28:47Dirk is playing a pretty deep short stop.
- 28:54And the hitter swings the next one to hit a high fly going foul down back to first base
- 28:58and is back into the base.
- 29:00It's one and one.
- 29:06One ball and one strike.
- 29:14And a pitch away top there again.
- 29:19Davis slaps the ball into his glove a couple of times.
- 29:22Swings around on the slab.
- 29:26And pitches and it's a foul. It hits the dirt back of the plate.
- 29:30Drops out of Gabby's glove to the count. It's two and one.
- 29:33Two balls and one strike.
- 29:44Davis takes quite a while getting his sign again.
- 29:49Finishing is ready.
- 29:53And pitches. The other ball he swings and it's a high pass ball outside for strike two.
- 29:58And it's two balls and two strikes.
- 30:01On art. Going through the count.
- 30:12Turns and throws first again but once more the runner is back fast.
- 30:15Davis going in there holding that runner on V.
- 30:22Again the pitcher throws it first.
- 30:24But the runner is back ahead of the total.
- 30:28And as he steps on the rub he finds Garibaldi out of the batter's box.
- 30:32He's up there again.
- 30:35Davis ready.
- 30:37He throws once more again the runner is on the goal.
- 30:39The hitter swings and misses.
- 30:40And they trap the runner between second and third.
- 30:44Billy Herman throws it hard in the plate and trying to get by. Trying to score. Trying to work that run home. Garibaldi struck out.
- 30:53The roasters started for second.
- 30:56Harkness can all cut him off so he stopped and tried to get back and forth long enough to let the runner get home from third base.
- 31:03But they walked carefully and Mize eventually was out at the plate on a throw from Harkness to Billy Herman.
- 31:12Two Harkness for the third out.
- 31:15And it's no runs, two hits, one man left on base in the first half of second inning.
- 31:21The score remaining nothing to nothing.
- 31:25Between the white cards.
- 31:28I got the white cards still on the air George.
- 31:30We've had them on the air for the last two weeks so I've got to get used to keep putting the cups back on the wireless here.
- 31:35Nothing to nothing between the cups and the cardinal.
- 31:38And the cups come to bat on the last half of the second inning with Demery the first man up.
- 31:43Broadcast of the Cup Cardinal game comes to you direct from Wrigley Field.
- 31:47The moment of cups at Chicago is a presentation of your neighborhood Texaco dealer, distributor of Texaco Fire Chief Gasoline.
- 31:54Broadcast comes with the permission of the Cubs and the Cardinals to stimulate interest in our national game and in your own local baseball team.
- 32:02This is WCFL at Chicago.
- 32:06Frank Demery the right stealer is up there.
- 32:09Went for a throw the first one, Frank hits the ball to the shortstop.
- 32:12He also comes up with a throw to the first and Demery is out easily for the first out in the second inning.
- 32:18One out of the second inning to the top and Fanny Hacks comes third baseman.
- 32:23Now in that sixth position batting is up at the plate.
- 32:41Winford has the sign winds up and throws the first one and Stan left handed hit and lets it go by.
- 32:46It's a strike over the heart of the plate about way top. One strike on Hacks.
- 32:54Throws again for the ball inside and low and it's one ball and one strike on Stanley.
- 33:00One and one.
- 33:12Ending up throws again and there comes the second strike. Just barely caught the outside corner.
- 33:17Knee high breaking away from the hitter.
- 33:19And naturally the catcher's glove is way low and wide when he caught it but that ball came over the outside corner above even with the knee.
- 33:26And it's one ball and two strikes.
- 33:29Throws again and it's inside and low for ball two. Making it two balls and two strikes on Stanley Hacks.
- 33:45Going through his account and there comes strike three over the heart of the plate above the knees.
- 33:50Stan started his own to go to first and realized he'd let a good one go by.
- 33:54I don't know. I've heard some batsmen say big leaguers when they get a lot of them in fact when they once got in the hitting slump.
- 34:01The only way they knew where to get out of it was to try to go after every ball that looked good.
- 34:06And there was even it was just barely in reach until they started hitting them again.
- 34:13The other hand other hitters will try to be more careful when they're in the slump.
- 34:16Jorgensen bat takes the first pitch inside across the cap for ball one. Right handed batsman.
- 34:28Wines up and gun crawls and the hitter hits a little hard smash and it turns off.
- 34:32Thank you for his knees and village three the first base.
- 34:35The first hit of the game. A hard smash and one that's very very hard to handle.
- 34:41One of those balls that land just in front of the hitter or the fielder at an angle.
- 34:46He's going over to it and if he doesn't feel it just exactly right or guess where it's going to bounce.
- 34:51That's right. Why don't it go for a base that that ball hit and didn't come up.
- 34:55Bounded low and hit Frank in the knees and bounded out in the center field.
- 34:59So Jorgensen on first base to two outs.
- 35:02Charlie Grim is at bat.
- 35:04Went for a look at first base and goes over there but Jorgensen back pass.
- 35:09You know the Cubs are going to play for that one run and the Jorgensen is liable to try to go down.
- 35:17There he goes and the pitch is wide. Davis gets the ball throws it out there and the runner is out at second base on a very good throw from Davis to DeRosier.
- 35:27Jorgensen out stealing Davis to DeRosier for the third out making it no run.
- 35:32One hit in the second inning for the Cubs.
- 35:37And at the end of the second inning the Cubs and Cardinals are tied and nothing's enough.
- 35:43Remember if you haven't done it already or if the scorebook, Texas Coast scorebook that you've obtained is just about filled.
- 35:52Pick up that request card in any Texas Coast service station.
- 35:56Fill it in. It's already addressed to me.
- 35:58It just asks for your name and address on the reverse side.
- 36:01The one-cent stamp on it to mail it in Chicago and or just mail it.
- 36:07Doesn't matter whether you're in Chicago or not, by cracking.
- 36:10And you'll get this scorebook which has the official blanks for 17 full games.
- 36:15Pitches of Cubs, of Stocks, of Rosters.
- 36:17But in addition our full scoring system with exclamations and illustrations, the one we've used here in the press box for some 15 years.
- 36:26The first pitch now to Winford. The Cardinal pitcher was as bad as a fastball over the heart of the plate for strike one.
- 36:32That's just above the knees.
- 36:35Davis winds up again, throws.
- 36:36And there's ball one amidst the inside corner breaking toward the hitter.
- 36:40And it's one ball and one strike on Winford.
- 36:45One and one to count.
- 36:48Wines up again, throws.
- 36:49Winford swings in a high bounder.
- 36:51Jurgis gets it on the second half, throws the first and Jim is out for the first out in the third inning.
- 36:59One out of the third inning for the Cardinal.
- 37:01And Moore.
- 37:03Terry Moore, the center fielder is up there.
- 37:05Right handed backman.
- 37:14Starts to wind up now, throws.
- 37:16And it's a high one inside for ball one.
- 37:18One ball called on Terry Moore.
- 37:26Davis again winds up pitches.
- 37:28And it's a wide one across the knees for ball two.
- 37:31Making it two and nothing, two balls and no strike.
- 37:43And Davis pitches and Moore hits a line drive and Billy Herman makes a leaping one handed catch that brings the crowd right out of their feet.
- 37:50Boy the fans just stood up in a body that time as Billy Herman raced into his right, leaped into the air, steered that ball with one hand and hung onto it for a pretty pretty play.
- 38:00And the second out in the third inning.
- 38:03It was a highway robbery but boy what a play it was.
- 38:06And it's two out in the third inning for the Cardinals with Frankie Crates.
- 38:10There goes manager and second baseman up there taking the first pitch for a strike.
- 38:14Just above the knees over the heart of the plate.
- 38:22There comes a wide one for ball one making one and one on Fritz.
- 38:38One ball and one strike on Fritz.
- 38:42Two out for the Cardinals in the third inning.
- 38:45And the hitter hits the next one and drive out into left center.
- 38:47Galan's racing over fast and makes another pretty play.
- 38:50A nice running catch in left center by that old ball hawk, Augie Galan out there.
- 38:55Two plays in a row that were beauties.
- 39:00So it's no runs, no hits in the third inning.
- 39:02And both Galan and especially Billy Herman are getting great hands.
- 39:06Billy's just trotting into the bench now and the cop back in the dugout giving him a great hand for that play that he made.
- 39:12No runs, no hits in the third inning.
- 39:14And the score feel nothing to nothing as the Cubs come to bat on the last half of the third with Charlie Grimm,
- 39:21top manager in first baseman, eighth first man at bat.
- 39:37Oh, look at the water boy.
- 39:38The last of the rick is just going over to get a glass of water for old man Deuton.
- 39:43He's coming here and seeing the water boy make that goal.
- 39:59Winford has finished a rather brief warmup.
- 40:03And the ball is thrown out there to second.
- 40:05Finally gets around the third where it comes to pitch with an underhand saw.
- 40:09Winford walks slowly back onto the mound.
- 40:11Charlie Grimm steps up there to the plate.
- 40:13He was at bat when Jurgis was caught stealing for the third out in the second inning.
- 40:18Winford pitches and Grimm takes a high fast ball outside for ball one.
- 40:30And the next first pitch, a high fly out into left center,
- 40:33the center fielder then comes in to make the catch usually for the first out in the third inning.
- 40:39That was the third inning for the Cubs.
- 40:41And Kurt Davis is at bat.
- 40:54Kurt Davis, the pitcher, right handed hitter up there with one out in the third inning.
- 41:03And he flings hard for the first pitch to miss it.
- 41:05Landed right down on his knees and it's strike one.
- 41:14Winford throws again and Kurt started to swing, got three quarters of the way around and stopped.
- 41:18But it's a strike and strike two.
- 41:20Two strikes on Davis.
- 41:32The pitcher has the time, throws and Kurt swings, hits the ball hard down to the third base on Garibaldi,
- 41:37scoops it up on a short hop, throws the first and it's two out in the third and the ball went right straight at Garibaldi.
- 41:44And it's two out in the third inning for the Cubs.
- 41:48We have the leadoff man, Augie Golan, up there to the plate once more.
- 41:59And he's got the Davis top to say something to on-plat finale as he's walking back toward the bench
- 42:06and takes his windbreaker jacket from specs to bat for it and put it on.
- 42:12And the first pitch to Golan is a curveball wide for ball one.
- 42:17Augie walks to open the Cubs first inning.
- 42:20Got his fire third base.
- 42:23Swings the next high fly out to our first base.
- 42:26Mize is circling under it as the wind blows it and makes the catch just out back of first base.
- 42:32There by about two feet for the third up.
- 42:37So it's no runs, no hits in the third inning for the Cubs and the score is still nothing to nothing
- 42:42between the Cubs and the Cardinals at the end of the third inning.
- 42:48Now for up to a minute's score, complete batteries from other cities, we return to the studio.
- 42:53In the American League, the Chicago White Sox game and St. Louis for the Browns have not yet started.
- 42:57In Detroit, the Tigers are playing the Cleveland Indians at the end of the second inning.
- 43:01They're tied nothing to nothing. Brown and Becker, the Indian batter, the Tigers using Bridges and Hayworth.
- 43:05In Boston, the New York Yankees lead the Red Sox at the end of the seventh inning, two to one.
- 43:10Ruffing and Dickey, the Yankee batter, Grove and Rick Ferrell working for the Red Sox.
- 43:15In Washington, the Philadelphia Athletics lead the Senators at the end of the first half of the first inning, one to nothing.
- 43:20Rhodes and Hayes, the Athletic batter, the Senators using Weaver and Millies to start with Sable catching in the first.
- 43:25In the National League, in New York, the Giants lead the Boston Bees at the end of the sixth inning, two to nothing.
- 43:30Chaplin and Lopez working for the Bees, the Giants, Fitzsimmons, and Mancuso.
- 43:35In Philadelphia, the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Phillies are tied at the end of the fifth inning, two to two.
- 43:41Becker, Baker, and Phelps, the opening batter for the Dodgers, Clark pitching in the first.
- 43:45Johnson and Wilson starting for the Phillies with Bowman on the mound in the fourth.
- 43:49And now back to Wrigley Field and Hal Todd. Take it, Hal.
- 43:53Back at the ballpark for the fourth inning, ladies and gentlemen.
- 43:56Trevor Martin, the first man at bat for St. Louis, hit a long fly out to deep right center where Frank Demery caught it for the first down.
- 44:04Now Medwick at bat, David Fitches, and Joe takes the fast strike over the heart of the plate.
- 44:08How about Wade Todd? One strike on Medwick.
- 44:13Heard his winding up again. Fitches and Joe swing to high fly down the right field line.
- 44:19Demery's turning cross, turning far low, and it's well back in the seat.
- 44:23When it lands down at the end of the right field stand, or strike two.
- 44:27The
- 44:32strike on Medwick, running that ball out because it started fair but not only had a natural slice on it like that drive here at George, but also had the wind blowing it in that direction.
- 44:44Where was that my drive? No, Howard Davis eliminated that from mine.
- 44:49I don't know what you got.
- 44:51Oh, I see. Two strikes to count, but the throw is the next one, and it's ball one.
- 45:03It missed the inside corner a little below the weight, making it one ball and two strikes on Medwick.
- 45:10One and two.
- 45:14One and two.
- 45:21David throws again, and Medwick swings to high fly to right field. Demery is ranging over to his left easily and makes the catch for the second out.
- 45:29So it's two out of the four pending for the card.
- 45:33And Johnny Mize, the powerful left handed hitting first base from the cardinal, steps up there to the plate.
- 45:40Mize at that.
- 45:44Lines up the throw, the first one, and John takes it inside across the chip for ball one.
- 45:49Unball called.
- 45:55David throws again, and Mize hits the ball out in the left center this time. Allen comes in fast to make the catch for the third out.
- 46:01And it's no run, no hits in the fourth inning for the cardinal.
- 46:05The score is still nothing to nothing between the Cubs and the cards. Cubs coming to bat in the last half of the fourth with the first man up, J.A. Allen.
- 46:16Well, we know we're home now, George. Here's the wire.
- 46:19There's 100 shoemakers strong for Cubs and Dexico and yourself.
- 46:23Just to me, the man's field shoemaker's club. That's a good old institution here in town.
- 46:32He's slowly out there into the infield. Airballed himself to pick up the ball that he used to warm up with and throw it in.
- 46:38He walks out there with sort of a shuffle.
- 46:42Finally starts his warm up with David.
- 46:53Ethan Allen stands out there to the left of the plate, waiting his turn to bat.
- 47:02Ball goes off to second base to stretch. He throws it to the roach or he to airball. He was dropped it, but he picked it up, tossed it to the pitcher.
- 47:10He used the rosin bag, looked around, and dried his fingers.
- 47:13And then steps slowly up onto the slab, and Winford is getting his time from Davis.
- 47:18Pitch the first one, pitches for a ball wide, and it was breaking down, although it started pretty hot.
- 47:25Caught one ball on Allen.
- 47:30He winds up again, throws, and it's a fast strike over the heart of the plate, just below the weight.
- 47:35So it's one and one. One ball and one strike on Allen.
- 47:42Winford again adjusts the cap, gets his time, starts swinging wind up, pitches, and he swings and hits an easy ball right back at Winford who gets it.
- 47:51Throws the first, and it's one out of the fourth inning for the Cubs.
- 47:57With Billy Herman getting a nice hand as he comes up, fans remembering that play he made on Moore's smash in the third and
- 48:06for nothing and nothing with one out of the fourth inning for the Cubs, and Billy Herman at bat.
- 48:15Billy hits the first pitch out in the left field for a good clean base hit.
- 48:18Looping singles to the left by Herman.
- 48:22Winford gets it and throws it back in. And Billy's on first base, one out of the fourth inning, and Gaby Harknett is at bat. Harknett up there to plate.
- 48:42Winford gets the time, gets ready to pitch the first one to Leo.
- 48:47And he throws and he takes a strike over the heart of the plate just above the knee. One strike on Harknett.
- 49:01Throws again and Gaby swings in a high fly out the left field.
- 49:05Left fielder Medwick coming in, DeRosha going out, but Joe calls for the ball and makes the catch.
- 49:09Still on the dead run in Gordian Field and just inside the foul line.
- 49:16It's going to be a long way to make that catch, but he yells DeRosha away from it so Leo's tough going out and Joe came in to get it.
- 49:25So it's two out of the fourth inning for the Cubs.
- 49:27Herman's still on first base and Frank Demery is up there to plate.
- 49:33He gets that.
- 49:47He's ready to throw the first one, turns and throws the first.
- 49:50But the runner gets back fast, starts to talk, one player threw it out there about something.
- 49:58He's going to complete again. He throws and it's a strike of the inside corner across the check.
- 50:04And it's one strike on Demery.
- 50:10One strike to count, waiting out there again.
- 50:13As the sign is ready, he steps off the slab suddenly.
- 50:25Turns around, walks back on it again.
- 50:33And he's ready to pitch.
- 50:37Throws and with a run around the goal, the hitter takes one inside and Herman is out easily stealing.
- 50:42He throws going from Davis to Freese who had the ball before the runner got there and then blocked him completely off the base so he didn't have a chance of getting in.
- 50:52And he no runs one hit in the fourth inning for the Cubs.
- 50:58So remaining nothing to nothing between the Cubs and the Cardinals at the end of the fourth inning.
- 51:09If you haven't tried Marpack lubrication on your car, you've never ridden in a really smooth running, quiet automobile.
- 51:16Marpack, you know, is the exclusive technical chassis lubricant which lasts quite as long as ordinary grease.
- 51:23It stays put and really lubricates.
- 51:26Drive to your technical service station, say Marpack, then find out for yourself what smooth riding is.
- 51:41Davis is finished, and Kurt Davis has finished his warm-up.
- 51:46And Virgil Davis who was still in the fence suddenly discovered he was wanted in the plate so he comes running up there.
- 51:53Carrying one back.
- 51:56Ready to face Kurt Davis, takes his plate there.
- 52:01Davis cannot get his time, starts to wind up.
- 52:05And throws and the hitter swings, hits the ball hard.
- 52:08Davis is out there and manages to leap into the air to tag the ball, but it goes on through on the right field for a base hit.
- 52:14Billy was playing very peculiarly that time.
- 52:17He was way back in the grass and actually over to his left, not over towards second but away from it.
- 52:23And he raced over farther into the grass, leap in the air and managed to tag that ball, but couldn't quite get it.
- 52:28So Davis is on first base.
- 52:30Nobody out in the fifth inning for the card.
- 52:34The Cardinal captain and shortstop is a bet.
- 52:44Davis takes a look at first base and gets ready to pitch first one to Leo.
- 52:49Throws and DeRosha takes a fast strike over the heart of the plate, waist-high.
- 52:54One strike on DeRosha.
- 53:06Throws again and it's a curveball wide and low.
- 53:09But ball one, the count is one ball and one strike on Leo.
- 53:14Suddenly comes off to the left of the plate to dig up the dry dirt.
- 53:18Wipes his hands and lifts dry.
- 53:20Back up to the plate again.
- 53:30Davis swings around to get the side and he's ready to pitch.
- 53:34Pitch is and it's a wide one.
- 53:36They thought they saw a hit-and-run or a steal tie down there apparently.
- 53:39You have to be called for a pitch out.
- 53:41The runner dashes back to first base.
- 53:43The count is now two and one on DeRosha.
- 53:45Two balls and one strike.
- 53:54Ready.
- 53:56Throws again and the hitter swings in a high fly out into right center.
- 53:59Montgomery is waiting for it there.
- 54:01Comes in a little, hands it and it's one out of the fifth inning for the card.
- 54:09Davis still on first base.
- 54:10One out of the fifth and Garibaldi is up there at the plate.
- 54:27Davis throws the first one and takes the first strike over the inside corner about knee high.
- 54:32One strike on Garibaldi.
- 54:37He's ready.
- 54:40Pitch is and the hitter takes the curve ball inside for a ball one.
- 54:44The count is one ball and one strike on Garibaldi.
- 54:48One and one.
- 55:01Throws again.
- 55:02The hitter swings in a fly down back to first base ball.
- 55:05Grimm is following it over there and makes the catch for the second out.
- 55:12So it's two out of the fifth inning for the Cardinals.
- 55:15Davis, Virgil Davis, the catcher is still on first base.
- 55:19And Winford, the Cardinal pitcher, comes walking up there towards the plate.
- 55:25Swings on the fly, gets ready to pitch the first one to Winford.
- 55:43Pitch is and the hitter takes the ball.
- 55:45And the hitter goes inside and blows for ball one.
- 55:55One ball goes.
- 55:56And it goes again for a strike over the heart of the plate, waist high.
- 56:00And it's one and one.
- 56:01One ball and one strike on Winford.
- 56:12Throws once more and Winford swings and misses for the second strike.
- 56:15Fast ball wide.
- 56:16He's got one ball and two strikes on Giam.
- 56:18One and two.
- 56:20Davis is on first base, two out of the fifth inning.
- 56:23Kurt Davis, the pitcher, swings around ready again.
- 56:26Pitch is and Winford takes strike three right down the middle letter high.
- 56:30And he's called out on strike for the third out in the fifth inning, making it no run.
- 56:35One hit.
- 56:36One man left on base in the first half of the fifth.
- 56:41And the score remains nothing to nothing.
- 56:44We have the Cubs and the Cards.
- 56:45Cubs coming back in the last half of the fifth inning with Frank Jemery of right fielder again, the first man up.
- 56:58I get quite a chuckle about something that happened out there on the field before the game.
- 57:04It seems that Pepper Martin and Johnny Mize used exactly the same bat except that the Corks had the factory.
- 57:10They have their own names put on them.
- 57:14And yet while Mize likes to use Martin's bat, that is Martin has the names of Cep's names on, Cep just won't use those with Mize's name on.
- 57:26Except as I said before, they're the same bat.
- 57:28So the day Medwick walked up with a brand new Johnny Mize bat, he peeked it out of the pile in front of the bench and handed it to Martin.
- 57:34And Mize discovered it just as Cep stepped up there to the plate.
- 57:37And he started ribbing him about, well you wouldn't use in the game and now you're going to break a brand new one in batting practice.
- 57:43And Pepper hit two or three good ones with him.
- 57:45But Mize kept ribbing him and he kept turning around ten.
- 57:47I'll make him so Matt, he'll make four or five hits today.
- 57:50That seems to be the way those fellows work.
- 57:52Just get base hits and win games no matter who gets the hits and who wins just towards the cardinals.
- 57:57First hit to Jemery is inside across the way for ball one.
- 58:03When Perthroes again, Frank hits a long high fly into the wind in the left field.
- 58:07Wind's holding it up and blowing it toward the foul line.
- 58:09And Medwick comes over fast, can't reach it.
- 58:12Lands back in the front row of Boxie.
- 58:14Way, way down beyond the couple's end.
- 58:16And it's one strike on Jemery.
- 58:21Frank was all the way around the second base when that ball finally landed.
- 58:25Because when it started it was very much fair.
- 58:27But it had a curve on it and envisioned the wind blowing in from the northeast.
- 58:32Was turning it toward that foul line.
- 58:40One and one to count, one ball and one strike.
- 58:53Now to pick a throw, the next one Frank hits it on the ground out to DeRosa who gets it easily over towards second base.
- 58:59And the first Mize has to make a one handed stab of the ball.
- 59:02He manages to hang on the first base with a throw spike and makes the play for the first out in the fifth inning.
- 59:09One out of the fifth inning to the Cubs.
- 59:11And Stanley Hacks up third base and steps up there to the plate.
- 59:15Hacks it back.
- 59:21Goes now, Stan swings in a long drive off the right center.
- 59:24Hacks in a racing back and makes the catch back there for the second out.
- 59:29Only up here this lane pretty well in today because of the headwind.
- 59:33And so, DeRosa had to really gallop back and to his left.
- 59:36But he's back there so he's turned around and waiting for the ball when it arrives.
- 59:40So a two out of the fifth inning to the Cubs.
- 59:42And Bill Jergens, Cubs shortstop, is at bat.
- 59:46Jergens up there at the plate.
- 59:53Goes the first one and Bill takes the third ball wide for ball one.
- 59:58One ball called.
- 1:00:00Went for that sign again.
- 1:00:01Winding up.
- 1:00:03Rolls.
- 1:00:04Bill hits the ball hard out in the left center for the face hit.
- 1:00:06His second hit of the game and only the second hit, or third hit rather, off went for the other hit made by Billy Herman last inning.
- 1:00:15The ball was hit in the left center just out of the reach of Jergens.
- 1:00:18He puts Jergens on first base, a two out of the fifth inning and starting them at bat.
- 1:00:24Grim up there.
- 1:00:34Looks back at first base and throws.
- 1:00:37And Grim falls this ball back onto the net back of the plate for strike one.
- 1:00:42Strike years ago.
- 1:00:55One strike and he's ready once more.
- 1:01:07Jergens throws the first, knowing very well that Jergens had to steal last time after he had already thrown the first to try to hold him there.
- 1:01:14Jergens comes back.
- 1:01:16The wind for a station plate again.
- 1:01:19And then again throws the first.
- 1:01:21This time Jergens is back even more quickly.
- 1:01:29He's got a little bit of a lead now and Grim swings in a high fly in the left field.
- 1:01:37Left field are coming in, calling for the ball but the rocher goes back and calls for it also.
- 1:01:38So Medwick steps up to also Leo to make the catch and he goes back into short left field again.
- 1:01:42For the third out, making it no runs, one hit, one man left on base.
- 1:01:47In the last half of the fifth inning and at the end of the fifth inning the Cubs and Cardinals are tied.
- 1:01:53Nothing to nothing.
- 1:01:55Now again for just a moment, we return to the studio.

- 1:02:56The cards are already addressed to Hal Totten.
- 1:02:58Make it a point. It's ended your request today.
- 1:03:01And now back to Wrigley Field for the continuation of the baseball game brought to you by permission of the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals
- 1:03:06to stimulate interest in our national game and in your local team.
- 1:03:10Back at the ball slot for the sixth inning, ladies and gentlemen, Jerry Moore,
- 1:03:15the Cardinals' center fielder and leadoff man, the first man up.
- 1:03:18He gets the first pitch for a false strike. The next one he fouled it back into the stand for strike two.
- 1:03:24And Davis winds up again. Throws.
- 1:03:27Jerry takes ball one. It's inside and low. It's one ball and two strikes.
- 1:03:33On Moore. One and two.
- 1:03:39Third throw's the gun and Moore swings it up off the line coming down foul.
- 1:03:42Back in the plate. Hardner's coming back under it and has it for the first out in the sixth inning.
- 1:03:48One out in the sixth inning for the Cardinals.
- 1:03:51And Frankie Fates, Cardinal manager in second baseman, steps up there to the plate.
- 1:04:06Adding left-handers like that against the right-handed pitching of Davis.
- 1:04:09Davis and the first pitch is a wide one across the way for ball one.
- 1:04:13One ball called.
- 1:04:21Ready again. Wines up.
- 1:04:23Throws and the hitters swing. Hit a ball hard in the center field.
- 1:04:26The land's racing across fast catch it. And it's two out in the sixth inning.
- 1:04:30The line drives the center. The land got a good jump on the ball and came over to make the catch look easy.
- 1:04:35The boy traveled a long way. And it's two out in the sixth inning for the Card.
- 1:04:39We have Pepper Martin, Cardinal right fielder, with old PEP up there.
- 1:04:47I think we can get him one of those misses tomorrow night out there. Riverview, Jim.
- 1:04:52He wants to. He'll be there, but he'll have to try to keep him out of it, I think.
- 1:04:56Martin swings the first pitch in a long one up the deep left center.
- 1:04:59The land's way back in front of the bleachers. Has it. And it's three out.
- 1:05:03Very well hit. But also was right into the wind.
- 1:05:06And the ball hit into the wind that way today isn't going to have much luck.
- 1:05:10That ball had a good chance of at least hitting the screen and not going in if there's been no wind there.
- 1:05:15It was mighty well hit. But it resulted in an easy up because of the way it started to sink.
- 1:05:20As soon as it got up there high enough for the wind to hit it.
- 1:05:22So it's no runs, no hits in the sixth inning for the Cardinals.
- 1:05:26And the score is still nothing to nothing.
- 1:05:29As the Cubs come to bat on the last half of the sixth with Kurt Davis, the pitcher, the first man up.
- 1:05:33Each team has made just three hits so far.
- 1:05:38This broadcast of the Cubs Cardinals game comes to you direct from Wigley Field.
- 1:05:43Over the Cubs to Chicago as a presentation of your neighborhood technical dealer,
- 1:05:48the visitor of technical fire chief, gasoline.
- 1:05:51Broadcast comes with the permission of the Cubs and the Cardinals,
- 1:05:54the similar interests in our national games and in your own local baseball team.
- 1:05:59WCF Alex DeCot.
- 1:06:03Winford's out there finishing his warm up.
- 1:06:06As Davis came from the bench up the plate and you heard the nice hand that he got.
- 1:06:12There goes the ball out to play in base again.
- 1:06:15Cardinals have won those two teams with Chris getting the ball and throwing it back into the road to his swivels around,
- 1:06:21throws it to Garibaldi and he runs in on the grass and he's a toss it or lobs it through the pitcher that runs back to his position.
- 1:06:28Now Winford out there starts to wind up throws and Davis swings in a high fly in the right center.
- 1:06:34Right fielder's in there waiting for it.
- 1:06:36Has it. Martin was right alongside him in there calling for him to make the catch.
- 1:06:40And it's 1-0 in the sixth inning for the Cubs with Augie Galan up there at the plate.
- 1:06:47Galan at bat. Winford starts to wind up.
- 1:06:53Throws. Augie swings in a beauty out to right field throwing on down the line.
- 1:06:57All is fielded fast by Martin. Galan makes the turn.
- 1:07:00Martin's quick throw and a good one into second base would have had him throw his turns and go back to first.
- 1:07:05A good single to right field but very well fielded by Martin and well thrown into second base to hold Galan at first.
- 1:07:14Augie's on first base with one out of the sixth inning for the Cubs and Ethan Allen becomes left fielder.
- 1:07:20Here's a bet.
- 1:07:30Galan takes his place there. Winford pitches and he takes the ball.
- 1:07:34Just missed that inside corner and I believe it's also a little bit low.
- 1:07:38It's one ball called.
- 1:07:44Fish playing in a little for this man but Baroche is playing pretty deep.
- 1:07:48Fish and Billy Herman move around very much alike out there in the field.
- 1:07:52Now with a runner on the goal Allen swings but fouls the ball on the ground to the left of the plate and it's 1-1.
- 1:07:58He's being the wake. Well he thought that Galan hadn't had a good start and might be caught and then to protect the runner he punched at that bad ball and fouled it.
- 1:08:07Make it 1-1. One ball and one strike on Allen.
- 1:08:11Galan on first base. One out of the sixth inning for the Cubs.
- 1:08:15Throw nothing to nothing between the Cubs and the Cubs.
- 1:08:21Turns and throws to first base and runs back there easily.
- 1:08:29Ready again. Pitchers and Allen swings in a high fly in the right center. All the curving back toward Martin who is waiting for it. Makes the catch.
- 1:08:37Going to stagger around there for a minute. Step back, step forward, step back and then leap forward and makes the catch and it's 2-0.
- 1:08:49That brings Billy Herman up there. Galan on first base. Two out of the sixth inning. Herman at bat.
- 1:09:02Brings on, gets ready. Back to the runner then pitches. Billy hits the ball hard into left field for another base hit.
- 1:09:08His second hit of the afternoon. Moves Galan to second base. The ball is feeling bad.
- 1:09:12By medley who lost no time. Failing it into third base to hold Galan at second.
- 1:09:19And the Cubs head runner is on first and second. Two out of the sixth inning. And Gabby Hartnett at bat. Hartnett upstairs to play.
- 1:09:36Gabby waits while Davidson wins for another little conference with manager Fritz. They're all back to their positions now.
- 1:09:43As Gabby steps up there, infield and outfield all move way around toward left field. And the infield is playing very deep.
- 1:09:49Gabby hits that ball hard and they're playing way back where they can get a good jump on it because Gabby isn't especially fast.
- 1:09:55And Gabby hits the first base. Third base run is played and a play. Billy Herman stops at second as the ball comes in to third base from Nedwick.
- 1:10:08Tendles the left field by Hartnett. Throwing Galan. And leading Cubs on is still on first and second with two out and one run home.
- 1:10:18That's the first run of the game and the Cubs are now leading the Cardinals.
- 1:10:23That's one of one to nothing and Frank Demery is the best.
- 1:10:34Demery up there to play.
- 1:10:39Demery getting his time to play the first one for him. Takes quite a while getting it. So Demery gets tired, steps out of the batting spot, jumps his hand, steps back up to the plate.
- 1:10:57Cardinals start getting their warming up in the right field both hands. And now the slow ball hitter hits the ground ball to Gerocha who throws the plate to second and Hartnett is out for the third out.
- 1:11:10Forced out for the third out. Tried to change the pace on Frank and he went right after it. Stopped waiting and beat it into the dirt for an easy play.
- 1:11:18So it's one run, three hits, two men left on base. The last half of the sixth inning and at the end of the sixth inning the Cubs are leading the Cardinals one to nothing.
- 1:11:29Now again for complete up to the minute scores and complete battering from other cities we return to studio.
- 1:11:35In the American League in St. Louis the Chicago White Sox lead the Browns at the end of the first half of the first inning one to nothing.
- 1:11:40Lyons and Sewell the battery for the White Sox. The Browns using Thomas and Giuliani.
- 1:11:45In Detroit the Tigers lead the Cleveland Indians at the end of the first half of the fifth inning one to nothing. Brown and Becker the Indian battery.
- 1:11:51The Tigers using Bridges and Hayworth. In Boston the New York Yankees defeated the Red Sox by a score of four to two.
- 1:11:57Ruffing and Dickey working for the Yanks. Grove and Rick Ferrell starting for the Red Sox with Wilson on the mound in the ninth.
- 1:12:02In Washington the Philadelphia Athletic lead the Senators at the end of the first half of the third inning five to two.
- 1:12:07Rhodes and Hayes the athletic battery. Weaver and Milley starting for the Senators.
- 1:12:11The table catching in the first and Cascarella on the mound in the third. In the National League in New York the Giants defeated the Boston Bees by a score of four to one.
- 1:12:18Chaplin and Lopez the B battery. The entire route fits Simmons and Mancuso going the entire distance for the Giants.
- 1:12:23In Philadelphia the Brooklyn Dodgers lead the Phillies at the end of the first half of the seventh inning four to three.
- 1:12:28Staker and Souths opening for the Dodgers. Clark in the first and Jeff Gold on the mound in the seventh.
- 1:12:32Johnson and Wilson the opening Philly battery. Warman pitching in the fourth and Jorgens hurling in the seventh.
- 1:12:38And now back to Wrigley Field and Hal Cotton. Take it Hal.
- 1:12:41Joe Medwick first man at bat in the seventh inning for the Cardinals got a hold of the first ball pitch and hit a terrific smash to left field.
- 1:12:48And the only thing that kept it from being a home run was a very strong headwind that held it down.
- 1:12:54It hit the wall about two feet from the top, bonded back in and resulted in a two base hit.
- 1:12:59So Medwick is on second base with nobody out of the seventh inning and the danger Mr. Mize is at bat.
- 1:13:06Charlie Rood again starts to warm up in the couple of pins.
- 1:13:10Davis looks back at second base pitches and Mize takes a high one wide for ball one.
- 1:13:15One ball called.
- 1:13:18I think the boys have a feeling that Mize is bad on the high pitches.
- 1:13:21But in one spot the Davis has a little trouble pitching. He needs to keep the ball low.
- 1:13:26Next one is wide for ball two making it two and nothing on Mize.
- 1:13:30Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:13:33Mize went right. I'm telling him he can't quite get it.
- 1:13:37And he once threw for a base hit.
- 1:13:39He heard him playing pretty well around four seconds.
- 1:13:41He made a great drive for it but couldn't get it.
- 1:13:43And it ties the score.
- 1:13:45One and one.
- 1:13:47The old gas house gags pretty tough.
- 1:13:50And you get him behind.
- 1:13:52Now Davis at bat. Mize on first base.
- 1:13:55Nobody out. One run home in the seventh inning.
- 1:13:57Score a tie one and one.
- 1:14:00Davis pitches and he hit a far tie.
- 1:14:03It's a bunt and follows the ball to the left of the plate.
- 1:14:05Little flat flyer. Too low for anybody to get.
- 1:14:08And it's one strike on Mize.
- 1:14:10One strike to count.
- 1:14:12Davis ready again.
- 1:14:26They're still expecting the bunt.
- 1:14:27But Spud instead was all set to swing and then let the ball go by.
- 1:14:31In fact he had to jump back to let it come by inside or ball one.
- 1:14:34The count is one ball and one strike on Spud Davis.
- 1:14:43One and one to count.
- 1:14:44Spud was all set again to swing but let the pitch go by wide for ball two.
- 1:14:49And it runs the count to two balls and one strike on Davis.
- 1:14:52Two and one.
- 1:15:01Kurt has the sign again.
- 1:15:04Pitches.
- 1:15:05Bud jumps back to take the third ball.
- 1:15:07It's inside across the wave.
- 1:15:09And Kurt really seemed to be having trouble.
- 1:15:11Boy if you want to see action you just take a look at that St. Louis bench.
- 1:15:14Boys down there clapping their hands.
- 1:15:16Dizzy Dean's walking back and forth.
- 1:15:18Throwing his arms around.
- 1:15:19They're stamping their feet hitting the floor of the dugout with that.
- 1:15:23Boy how they're going.
- 1:15:25Kurt throws again and the header follows this one and bounce off the catcher's mask and clear into the stand at the right of the plate.
- 1:15:30For the second strike to run it to three and two.
- 1:15:33Three balls and two strikes.
- 1:15:39Oh that ball's not only got a lot of color but a lot of fight and they want to win.
- 1:15:43Look at that Diz.
- 1:15:44Regular cheerleader right up there in front of the dugout.
- 1:15:47Gellin's brother hit that ball.
- 1:15:50The fellow he's supposed to be on the up with more or less.
- 1:15:53Grand to the count.
- 1:15:56Hit the turn and throws the first base.
- 1:15:58The runner gets back ahead of the throw.
- 1:16:06Now Davis again throws the first and the runner slides back this time.
- 1:16:10Has Grimm grabs the ball.
- 1:16:11Puts it on him but there's no play so.
- 1:16:14The ball sends it back to pitcher.
- 1:16:21Davis pitches the runners on the go.
- 1:16:22The hitter follows the ball back onto the net back of the plate.
- 1:16:25And it's still three balls and two strikes on this.
- 1:16:28Still three and two.
- 1:16:37Davis isn't overly fast but he's not slow and he's a great big fellow too.
- 1:16:45Into the count on Spud.
- 1:16:49Davis is ready again.
- 1:16:51Pitchers again the runners on the go and again it's a ball back onto the net.
- 1:16:54And it's still three balls and two strikes on Davis.
- 1:17:12Davis taking quite a while.
- 1:17:13Teams that again.
- 1:17:18And he pitches and Davis follows another one.
- 1:17:21Mighs back onto the net.
- 1:17:24So it's three and two still on Spud.
- 1:17:25With Mighs again taking that walk back to first base.
- 1:17:29Cardinals have tied the score in the seventh inning.
- 1:17:31They have one run home.
- 1:17:32Still have Mighs on first base.
- 1:17:33Nobody else.
- 1:17:34Four tie one and one.
- 1:17:37Takes Spud Davis the Cardinal catcher has met.
- 1:17:39against Kurt Davis, he jumped 50.
- 1:17:42Kurt finally swings around again.
- 1:17:53Ready, 50, and the hitter swings, and Miffy is striking out, and this time Myers didn't
- 1:18:02try to run.
- 1:18:03Miffy had a hunch out there, and if he tried to run that time, it's almost a pure shot
- 1:18:08shot, and he didn't try to double him, but he stayed at first base, and so what Davis
- 1:18:12strikes out is one out in the seventh inning for the card.
- 1:18:15Myers still on first base, one run home, and Leo Jaroczor, Cardinal captain and shortstop,
- 1:18:21is at bat.
- 1:18:22Leo swings at the ball hard into left field for another base hit.
- 1:18:25Allen fields the ball carefully, throws it over to second base, and he sees Myers knocking
- 1:18:30there, and a chase in back in a hurry.
- 1:18:33Jaroczor, the seven, actually going much side and ball fix, and Myers is looking around
- 1:18:38that inch, so he threw the ball back to pitcher, and at the third hit of the inning, the Cardinal
- 1:18:43tab runners on first and second with one out, one run home in the seventh, and Garibaldi
- 1:18:49is at bat.
- 1:18:50Suddenly time is called, and somebody's going to bat for Garibaldi.
- 1:18:56Charlie Gelbert is going down to warm up and go back in to play third base.
- 1:19:01Somebody coming up there.
- 1:19:03That is played for Garibaldi.
- 1:19:05Myers goes running over to dugout, gets a big drink of water while he's got a chance
- 1:19:18to take that time.
- 1:19:20The pinch hitter is Jimmy Collins.
- 1:19:23Chris Collins is the pinch hitter.
- 1:19:25Now Mike Gonzalez is running over there to the bench to consult with Frankie Fritz, all
- 1:19:30called to get, use this call to get some water.
- 1:19:33Mike could have gone right into the cup dugout to get a drink if he needed that bad, but
- 1:19:37he wanted to talk things over with Fritz.
- 1:19:42Collins is the pinch hitter in place of Garibaldi, and the dangerous hitter he is to have up
- 1:19:49there too.
- 1:19:52Cardinal tab runners on first and second with one out, one run already home in the seventh
- 1:19:56inning, for a tie one and one.
- 1:19:58Davis ready to pitch to Collins who also switches, and that's why he's batting left handed.
- 1:20:02And the first pitch is wide across the chest for ball one.
- 1:20:06Gelbert is warming up in the bullpen, so is Euther.
- 1:20:09Be ready to go in in case of emergency.
- 1:20:16Davis throws the next one to another bad ball, very wide, so Hardin had walked out a long
- 1:20:20time to play before returning up to the pitcher.
- 1:20:30Bird has his sign again, take another look at second base.
- 1:20:34Pitch is on his ball three, another bad ball high and wide, and the pitcher is really in
- 1:20:39a jam now.
- 1:20:40As it comes three and nothing on a very dangerous hitter, with runners on first and second only
- 1:20:45one out, one run already home.
- 1:20:50Davis gets out of his jam without serious damage.
- 1:20:53He's going to have to do some of the greatest pitching he's ever done right now.
- 1:20:58Bird is ready once more.
- 1:21:01Throw, then it's a strike over the heart of the plate, weight high, run the count, three
- 1:21:05and one, three balls and one strike.
- 1:21:08Collins may go after this ball, but it's pretty good, and it's going to be good, or else he
- 1:21:16gets the base on balls anyway.
- 1:21:20He throws and Collins swings it along, foul the way down the right field line, back into
- 1:21:24the sheet, and it's still three and two.
- 1:21:27He gets the ball very wide, so Hardin had walked out a long time to play before returning
- 1:21:31it to the pitcher.
- 1:21:40Bird has the sign again, takes another look at second base.
- 1:21:44Pitchers on it's ball three, another bad ball high and wide, and the pitcher is really in
- 1:21:49a jam now.
- 1:21:50As it comes three and nothing on a very dangerous hitter, with runners on first and second only
- 1:21:55one out, one run already home.
- 1:22:00He's going to have to do some of the greatest pitching he's ever done right now.
- 1:22:09Bird is ready once more.
- 1:22:12Throw, then it's a strike over the heart of the plate, weight high, run the count, three
- 1:22:15and one, three balls and one strike.
- 1:22:19Collins may go after this ball, if it's any good, and it's going to be good, or else he
- 1:22:26gets the base on balls anyway.
- 1:22:31The throws and Collins swings in a long foul, the way down the right field line, back into
- 1:22:34the sheet, and it's still three and two.
- 1:22:37They get the ripper out, or he's walked, he's gone base.
- 1:22:42Chances are there will also be a pinch hitter for Winford, that's why Heuser is warming
- 1:22:47up so hard out there in the bullpen.
- 1:22:51Certainly the cards figure this is their big chance.
- 1:22:58Now Davis swings around, he has his tie in, here's the big one coming, he turns and throws
- 1:23:02the second and the runner almost is out there, but not quite.
- 1:23:05Dirk has came over, Third World made a good throw there and they very nearly got the man
- 1:23:10out, and again, Dirk was all ready to throw, he stepped off the rubber and faked the throw,
- 1:23:15runner dashed back, but Dirk held the ball when he saw that Myers was right there.
- 1:23:19Going to get too much of a start.
- 1:23:22Dirk is playing right off the back of second base, Davis still watching the man in second.
- 1:23:27Pitches and the Collins swings in a foul, coming in to the stands for the left plate,
- 1:23:31up in the second deck.
- 1:23:34It's still three balls and two strikes on Collins.
- 1:23:45Gabbys out there talking to Davis, out in front of the mom, the two of them turn and
- 1:23:49go back to their position.
- 1:23:57Gabbys turns, says something, no fire from Nellie, then turns around, talks once again
- 1:24:01and so Collins steps out of the battered spot, the umpire calls time, rips back up there
- 1:24:07again.
- 1:24:12Down three and two, Davis ready to pitch, pitches and Collins takes strike three, right
- 1:24:19down the middle and he didn't go after it.
- 1:24:21Down the middle of off knee high and he takes the third strike for the second out.
- 1:24:26That makes a two out in the seventh inning for the Cardinals.
- 1:24:33Now Charlie Grims over there in the mom, talks to Davis.
- 1:24:38As the two men walk up there to the plate, we hit Ogrodowsky, Bruce Ogrodowsky, the catcher
- 1:24:48is going to bat in place of Gwen Ferdy.
- 1:24:50The right hand is batting.
- 1:24:59Ready to pitch the first one now to Brucey, throws and he swings in a high flag going
- 1:25:04foul back at the plate, hard to start back, the wind catches it, carries it back and it
- 1:25:08lands on the net and picks up there up above the box feet.
- 1:25:13It's one strike on Ogrodowsky.
- 1:25:20All that Davis is pitching out there, how he's pitching.
- 1:25:24Cardinal runners on first and second, two out, one run home in the seventh inning for
- 1:25:28a tie, one and one.
- 1:25:29Between the cup and the card.
- 1:25:37Watching second throw and the hitter swings in the curveball inside, what strike two,
- 1:25:42two strikes and Ogrodowsky.
- 1:25:46Two strikes to count.
- 1:25:54Davis still watches there, then pitches and the hitter hits the ball back to the box.
- 1:25:57Billy Herman gets it, throws a long throw to first base and he's out.
- 1:26:01He's out for the third out and Kurt Davis really did a job of pitching that time.
- 1:26:06Really did a job of pitching.
- 1:26:07He pitched as I don't think I've ever seen him pitch.
- 1:26:12Thank you.
- 1:26:13Walter Johnson comes in and gathers the official figures for today's game.
- 1:26:1727,000 people.
- 1:26:19That's a lot of people.
- 1:26:23For a midweek game, it's a special lot of people.
- 1:26:31There's the announcement of what we announced a minute ago.
- 1:26:35Elbert Plains, Jared Huser pitching.
- 1:26:41Start the last half of the seventh inning, broadcast the Cup Cardinal game, come to your
- 1:26:46direction, ballpark, as a presentation of your neighborhood technical dealer, and with
- 1:26:51the permission of the Cup and the Cardinals to stimulate interest in our national game
- 1:26:55and in your own local baseball team.
- 1:26:58WCFL at Chicago.
- 1:27:00Huser throws the first one to Stanley Haack, who's the first man to stand in the seventh
- 1:27:04inning, and Stan takes the third ball wide for ball one.
- 1:27:07Wind turns up from the dust, steps out of the box, time is called, and he's back up
- 1:27:11there to play it again.
- 1:27:14Huser pitches.
- 1:27:16Stan swings in, it's low bound, a card third.
- 1:27:18Elbert comes in, gets it, and Stan beats it out.
- 1:27:21Beat it out for a base hit.
- 1:27:23He was in there almost a full step ahead of the ball.
- 1:27:27Very, very fast, you know.
- 1:27:29And he really beat that ball out.
- 1:27:31He was going down that line like a scared rat.
- 1:27:33And it puts Haack on first base with nobody out in the seventh inning.
- 1:27:36And Jurgis, Phil Jurgis, is back.
- 1:27:40Maes comes over to talk to Davis, and Huser, Huser's a right-hander, called Slimboy, and
- 1:27:45Fitch is with a two-thing sidearm delivery.
- 1:27:49That's Wendy on the ball.
- 1:27:52Or a tie one and one.
- 1:27:54Oh, he has a chance to win himself a ball game here.
- 1:28:07Huser on the rubber again, they're expecting Jurgis to bunt, and he does.
- 1:28:10He bunts the ball out there.
- 1:28:12Fitch comes over, gets it, throws to first, covering first, and Jurgis is out on the
- 1:28:16tackle pipe for the first out in the seventh inning.
- 1:28:19Haack going to second base.
- 1:28:25So it's one out of the seventh inning for the Cubs.
- 1:28:28Haack on second base.
- 1:28:30And Charlie Grimm is at bat.
- 1:28:34They may block Charlie.
- 1:28:36Charlie hasn't looked very tough up there to play so far today with two easy flies.
- 1:28:41But first base is vacant.
- 1:28:43It's getting near the end of the ball game, and the pitch is the next man up.
- 1:28:46On the other hand, they may figure that they've cut him off before.
- 1:28:49He's in the slump and batting eight.
- 1:28:50They'd rather pitch to it and put an extra runner on base.
- 1:28:53Yeah, that's what they're going to do, but they won't pitch anything good, I'm sure,
- 1:28:56unless they feel that they can get him on it.
- 1:28:59The first pitch is wide and low for ball one.
- 1:29:07The world's thrown a second.
- 1:29:08Haack goes back.
- 1:29:09Nobody going over to cover, and takes the lead again.
- 1:29:12Is he ready?
- 1:29:13Looks back at second with more throws.
- 1:29:15Charlie hits one foul down the left of the line.
- 1:29:18Oh, that ball was just outside the foul line.
- 1:29:21Hook to the right, that would have been inside, and a very, very dangerous face hit at a spot like this.
- 1:29:27Charlie hit the ball good.
- 1:29:30Didn't quite get a round on it, and it was a vicious smash foul, just foul, down past third base.
- 1:29:36So it's one and one on Grimm, one ball and one strike.
- 1:29:40Watch the second throw again, and Charlie swings in around, fly out the left center.
- 1:29:44Center fielder's back there though, makes the catch, and it's too out.
- 1:29:48He throws the ball hard into the roach here.
- 1:29:50He deflects it over to Gilbert.
- 1:29:52There's nobody covering third, but David's action down there.
- 1:29:55And so Haack stays at second base.
- 1:30:00The ball was well hit.
- 1:30:01The line smacked off the left center, but it's another ball that was made easy to handle
- 1:30:05by that strong wind blowing in.
- 1:30:10So it's two out of the seventh inning, and Kurt Davis, the cup pitcher, is at bat.
- 1:30:15Kurt comes walking out of the dugout, up toward the plate.
- 1:30:18Now it gives him a hand as he walks out there.
- 1:30:22Chance to possibly win his own good ball game right here.
- 1:30:33Kurt finally arrives at the plate.
- 1:30:44That's right handed.
- 1:30:45He uses his wings around, gets ready to pitch.
- 1:30:48Pitches him, hitters swings and fouls the ball into the stands to the right of the plate.
- 1:30:52Just misses the second deck, drops from the lower deck, and it's one strike on David.
- 1:30:57One strike is the count.
- 1:31:00He's calling it day one of home.
- 1:31:06Throws the ball in.
- 1:31:08Yumpf has another ball in play, examines that one, and finds he's wrong with it.
- 1:31:12Just in the back of his pocket.
- 1:31:14One strike.
- 1:31:20Throws again and the hitter fouls the ball back on the net.
- 1:31:23Now it goes into the second deck, misses the net above and to the right of the plate.
- 1:31:26Hounds on down, fellow in the front row grabs it.
- 1:31:29Two strikes on Kurt David.
- 1:31:45Richard Huser turns around, made a step towards second.
- 1:31:47Hacks to start to fade back there, but there was nobody covering.
- 1:31:50He takes his lead again.
- 1:31:51He's ready to pitch.
- 1:31:53Pitches and the hitter swings, stops his swing, but the umpire calls it strike three.
- 1:31:58And Galan goes up there and the umpire calls time.
- 1:32:06And apparently decides it's a ball, the umpire out in the field, correcting him.
- 1:32:11And now DeRosa's going over to umpire Stewart.
- 1:32:15He looks to me as though the hitter really did stop up on his swing.
- 1:32:20Umpire Finnelli naturally watching where the ball came over the plate.
- 1:32:24He wanted the swing all the way and when there was a complaint he flashed a signal to the umpire on his second base.
- 1:32:31And umpire Stewart indicated that it was a ball, not a strike.
- 1:32:35Now, some of the other boys come in to argue with umpire Finnelli.
- 1:32:39That happens many, many times during the season.
- 1:32:42The umpire complaint with his eyes on the ball often feels that he might not have seen whether the bat went all the way around or not.
- 1:32:49And he'll ask the umpire out on the field whether it did.
- 1:32:54Leo DeRosa's very angry with it and Gizzy Dean is out there trying to push him away from umpire Stewart because he'd rather say something if he's sorry for it.
- 1:33:04Ray Blades, the coach, runs out there now to ask him.
- 1:33:07And umpire Finnelli comes over from third base and walks away with Leo to talk to him, try to quiet him down.
- 1:33:14The captain was very, very teased at what umpire Stewart did and yet it was his own way.
- 1:33:19As a first he'd be the first one to ask the umpire on the field to help the umpire behind the plate.
- 1:33:27Now umpire Finnelli runs straight out into the field to talk to Dean who's been doing much of the complaining.
- 1:33:37Finally Frankie Fritz orders all the boys who don't belong out there to go back to the bench.
- 1:33:42Because the play is not a novel thing.
- 1:33:44DeRosa's still popping off.
- 1:33:46Umpire Peermann goes over there and tells him all to go back there and take your position.
- 1:33:50You'll be out of there in a minute if you don't look out.
- 1:33:53Umpire Stewart still standing there taking it.
- 1:33:57He runs the count to one and two.
- 1:34:01In my mind the only question was whether the ball was over the plate or not because Davis definitely didn't even go halfway around on the swing.
- 1:34:07They finally get the Cardinals back to their position. You can't blame them for scrapping all the way and trying to get every inch they think is coming to them.
- 1:34:16After all Aaron is pennant right too. They win today there in first place.
- 1:34:20Fighting for everything they can get.
- 1:34:22Now Davis takes ball two and missed the outside corner across the knees.
- 1:34:26And it's two balls and two strikes on Kurt.
- 1:34:39Two and two is the count.
- 1:34:45DeUce already again throws and Davis gets the third ball wide.
- 1:34:48And it's three balls and two strikes on Davis.
- 1:34:59DeUce will take his time getting his time.
- 1:35:01The big one coming up is Kurt. Kurt's got his swing. He pitches.
- 1:35:04Davis swings it a bounder down a third base line.
- 1:35:06Third base and gets the ball. Throw it to first.
- 1:35:09It goes wide but Myers reaches way off to make a one handed stab of the ball and hang onto it for the third out.
- 1:35:16Nice play by Myers over there.
- 1:35:18So it's no runs. One hit. One man left on base in the last half of the seventh inning.
- 1:35:23And the score is still a tie one and one.
- 1:35:25Between the Cubs and the Cardinals at the end of the seventh inning.
- 1:35:33Somebody else being paid out there in the PA system. Well they've got to keep track of everybody I guess.
- 1:35:39People who drive all day on business invariably stop at the fire chief's club.
- 1:35:44They found out by using this emergency type gasoline that there's less gear shifting in traffic, faster acceleration with the traffic lights.
- 1:35:52And that saves time. And more mileage per gallon means dollars saved.
- 1:35:57Fill up today with fire chiefs and enjoy these advantages too.
- 1:36:15Davis has finished his warm up to start the eighth inning. First man at bat for the Cardinals is Terry Moore, center fielder and lead off man.
- 1:36:26Terry steps up there to the plate.
- 1:36:35Larry Frank is strolling on down to both ends to get warm in case he's needed.
- 1:36:39And Terry tries to tag a bunch to start the inning off but misses the ball completely for strike one.
- 1:36:53And strikes count. Davis throws a gun and Terry swings in a foul ball at bound amongst the spectators back of the Cubs dugout back at third base.
- 1:37:01And it's two strikes on Moore. He strikes a count.
- 1:37:16Two strikes to count. The interslingers and midfielders striking out for the first out in the eighth inning. One out in the eighth inning for the Cardinals and Fritz is at bat.
- 1:37:39First pitch to Fritz with a fast strike. Let's you go by for strike one. Davis winding up again. Throws and the hitter swings in a high bounder.
- 1:37:52Kurt can't reach it. It's a slow one. Jergus comes across fast. Throws it up. Throws it first. But the runner peeks it out for a base hit.
- 1:37:58He's there the first base. But Jergus made a beautiful try on that ball. With the bounder that was just too high for Davis to leap up and grab.
- 1:38:07And Jergus telling across behind Davis. He scooped it up with his bare hand. Made a underhand fast throw to first base. An inaccurate one.
- 1:38:16But couldn't quite get the runner and he's safe on a fast play for a base hit. Putting him on first base with one out in the eighth inning.
- 1:38:25And Pepper Martin at bat. Davis with the first base throw. And Cep gets a strike over the outside corner. Waste time.
- 1:38:36One strike on Martin. Davis as he's trying out there again. He's ready to pitch. Pitch is and the hitter starts to swing stuff.
- 1:38:51But it's a battered ball anyway and it goes out in the center field for a fly. That was funny. He didn't seem to take a full swing at that.
- 1:38:58He got around about halfway on it and then wanted to miss the ball. Let it go by but he followed it so well he met it squarely and it still went out in the center field for a fly ball and a fly out for the second out in the eighth inning.
- 1:39:10So it's too early in the eighth inning for him to hit a ball that hard only half time. What if he had met that ball square with all his power.
- 1:39:20Medwick up at bat. Medwick up there at the plate for the Cardinals. Davis watches first base and throws and goes swings in a foul up against the right edge of the screen for strike one.
- 1:39:31Bounds on down into the field. It's one strike on Medwick. Ruud and Frank both keeping warm for the Cubs.
- 1:39:39In case of emergency here and the right hander and left hander ready to go in. Davis steps on the slab again. First base. Pitch is and it's a ball. It's inside across the chest and it's one ball and one strike on Medwick.
- 1:39:56One and one.
- 1:40:06Again Medwick swings it to beauty off the right field for a base hit. Demery goes over fast throws it in to Billy Herman who turns and throws to third.
- 1:40:14Just barely safe on a very false play. Getting to third base on Medwick's free throw to the right.
- 1:40:20Sled safely into third base and he's sitting on the back there as Mike Gonzalez, the coach, and they're talking to him. Looking out this way on the next man.
- 1:40:36Cousins causing more trouble on their top first and third two out of the eighth inning. Now Shorty Grimm calls a conference of all the emcees and the catcher at the pitcher's mound as the Husky dangerous Johnny Mize comes to bat.
- 1:40:55Johnny already has two hits today.
- 1:40:58Doubled to left, single to right, and he fly it out once to left.
- 1:41:02Grim tells Davis now, you can do it.
- 1:41:04Boys scatter back to their positions.
- 1:41:06Gaby coming back behind the plate.
- 1:41:08And my standing there swinging free bat is ready.
- 1:41:19Steps up to the plate.
- 1:41:20Davis there getting his time.
- 1:41:28Gets the time, looks at the runners.
- 1:41:32Then pitches and my swings in the ball hard to right field.
- 1:41:35Way, way back.
- 1:41:36And it goes in the bleachers for a home run.
- 1:41:39Blind smack into the bleachers in the right field for a home run.
- 1:41:43And boy how that ball was hit.
- 1:41:45Didn't go very high, didn't go high on the last throw of the bleachers.
- 1:41:48All the way out there and Jeff went over the top of the pin and into the stands.
- 1:41:54And Medwick waits for him at the plate.
- 1:41:56Grabs his hand as he comes across the plate.
- 1:41:59And then, DeRosha grabs his hand also and then kicks Medwick in the back of his lap.
- 1:42:06As he comes walking there, Joe also comes up there.
- 1:42:09And that gives the Cardinals a three run lead.
- 1:42:11Cubs still have the idea that this fella is an eyeball hitter and that's one thing that
- 1:42:19Davis does not pitch well.
- 1:42:21Now Davis at bat hits the first pitch but it's a foul way down the right field line
- 1:42:25and into the seat for strike one.
- 1:42:33And the Cardinals are leading now four to one.
- 1:42:35In the eighth inning, Mr. Mize has quite a hitter up there at that plate.
- 1:42:41His third hit of the afternoon, a single, a double and a home run for him.
- 1:42:45Drove in those three runs, just looks as though this fella might get out of there.
- 1:42:48Davis throws again and Bud Davis falls to the ground, let a high ball go by inside for
- 1:42:54ball one.
- 1:42:56And Kurt winds up pitches and the hitter takes ball two high on the inside, making it two
- 1:43:10balls and one strike on the spot.
- 1:43:18One to one to count.
- 1:43:21Swings again to hit a high fly, Billy Herman's back in short right field, waving everybody
- 1:43:25away for him, jogs over towards the foul line and makes the catch for the third out, but
- 1:43:30not until dire damage has been done for the hopes of these tough fans.
- 1:43:35Three runs, three hits in the eighth inning and it all started with that little dribbler
- 1:43:43that bounced over Davis' head.
- 1:43:45Three runs, three hits for the Cardinals and the Cubs come to bat in the last half of the
- 1:43:49eighth with the Cardinals leading by a score of four to one.
- 1:43:53First cup hitter will be Augie Gallant.
- 1:44:00We've got to go Jimmy, well go on, see you tomorrow night out there.
- 1:44:03Have Pepper Martin and Dizzy and the boys out there at Riverview to drive in your car.
- 1:44:09That's where they're going to anyway, Medwick says he'll drive the other one.
- 1:44:12It's not going to be a good race at that if we can keep him going slow enough.
- 1:44:22Here is Gallant's back to start the eighth inning, but you're finishing his warm up.
- 1:44:29Ogudovsky's up there warming up the pitcher, but Davis is waiting up there, waiting his turn.
- 1:44:46And Huser finally gets the ball as we're ready to go in the last half of the eighth inning.
- 1:44:50Atlanta's back, Huser starts to wind up.
- 1:44:54Pitches, Augie swings in an easy bound right back at the pitcher.
- 1:44:57He got the throw at the first and it's one out in the eighth inning.
- 1:45:00One out in the eighth inning for the cup and Allen is up there to play.
- 1:45:05Allen at bat.
- 1:45:13Keith, right-hander hitter, waits there to get the time.
- 1:45:20Ready to pitch.
- 1:45:20Throws and it's a fast one inside for ball one. One ball call.
- 1:45:32Ready once again, throws and the hitter takes it for ball two inside across the chest and it's two and nothing.
- 1:45:38Nothing is to count and there's a no almost a strike but not quite.
- 1:45:53Just missed the outside corner about shoulder high and the umpire almost started to call it that then
- 1:45:58stopped and so Davis turns and calls for a new ball. The reason that didn't go over there's no
- 1:46:03question about the pitch being a ball but it seemed it was going over the plate and suddenly
- 1:46:08sailed a little and the umpire throws the ball out of play. Now he's to lay one down the middle for
- 1:46:12a strike and it's three and one on Allen. Three balls and one strike.
- 1:46:20Ready again winds up throws and it's ball four inside across the chest. Allen gets the base on
- 1:46:26ball and it puts him on first base with one out of the eight innings and Billy Herman is back.
- 1:46:40Billy sort of digs in there to play at his spot to break his foot in as he faces the pitcher.
- 1:46:47One strike on field.
- 1:46:48So ready once again now throws and Herman hits the next one an easy
- 1:46:59boundary out back to the pitcher. Fritz gets the ball and steps on second throws the first for a
- 1:47:04double play. Fast play by Frankie Fritz who ran over in front of second base. Grab that ball step
- 1:47:10back on second to force Allen for the second out and then through the first to complete a double
- 1:47:15play for the third out of the inning and it's no runs no hits. In the eighth inning for the Cubs
- 1:47:21they score remaining four to one in favor of the Cardinals at the end of the eighth inning
- 1:47:26of this the opening game of the four game series between the Cubs and the Cubs.
- 1:47:34You people who have your technical scorebook can record this vital series in the book as you see it
- 1:47:40at the park or as you get it over the air and people who haven't better get ready for important
- 1:47:45series to come by stopping in at your or any technical service station asking for request
- 1:47:50cards filling in your name and address on the vacant side it's already addressed to me on the
- 1:47:54other side the one-cent stamp on it and mail it in and get that scorebook in a hurry. The book
- 1:48:00contains the official scoring blanks for 17 games pictures of Cubs and stocks their rosters and
- 1:48:05schedules and a complete scoring system the one we've used for 15 years here in the fresh spot
- 1:48:10with illustrations and full explanations so that you can keep these games for years and years to
- 1:48:15come and also tell what it means when you see those marks in the scorebook. The roach or fat
- 1:48:21swings is the first pitch to miss it for strike one. Davis winds up again throws Leo swings his ball
- 1:48:27hard into left center. Galant comes in fast grabs for the ball and gets back in throwing clear back
- 1:48:32to the plate here. Roach is rounding second base on his way to third and Allen gets the ball throws
- 1:48:37it into Jargus who turns and throws it into the plate with Davis cutting it off and it's a three
- 1:48:42base hit. The land fly for a two swing catch there couldn't reach it and it goes on through
- 1:48:49for a three base hit putting DeRosha on third base to open the night thing and bringing Charlie
- 1:48:55Gelver get back. Gelver the right-handed hitter now playing third base with a card
- 1:48:59in field playing in left side playing about halfway in right side all the way into the draft
- 1:49:08and the first pitch is inside and low for ball one. One ball on Gelver
- 1:49:21throws again and Charlie swings and misses a high fastball inside for strike one making it one and
- 1:49:26one. Again Root and French are warming up in the left field both ends of the cup and they go in there
- 1:49:32if another one scores more men get on base. All the way Huser is relieved Winford begins to look as
- 1:49:39though things are a little bit tough. The hitter hits the next one to pop by over Billy Herman's
- 1:49:44head. Billy gets it and it's one out of the ninth inning. Bringing Huser and a pitcher to back
- 1:49:51and he comes strolling out of the bench walking up there toward the plate. Huser is back with one out
- 1:49:58of the ninth inning for the Cardinals DeRosha on third base infield still playing in close wanting
- 1:50:04to cut down that run of the plate. Three base hit. The land's tied for a two swing catch there
- 1:50:15couldn't break it and it goes on through for a three base hit putting DeRosha on third base to open the
- 1:50:21ninth inning and bringing Charlie Gelbert to back. Gelbert a right-handed hitter now playing third base
- 1:50:27for the card.
- 1:50:31Infield playing in left side playing about halfway in right side all the way into the
- 1:50:35draft and the first pitch is inside and low for ball one. One ball on Gelbert.
- 1:50:50Goes again and Charlie swings and misses a high fast ball inside.
- 1:50:53Horse strike one making it one and one. Ken Root and French are warming up in the left field.
- 1:50:58Ben's the cup and they go in there if another one scores more men get on base. All the way Huser is relieved.
- 1:51:06Winford begins to look as though things are a little bit tough. The hitter hits the next one
- 1:51:11to pop by over Billy Herman's head. Billy he's got it and it's one out of the ninth inning.
- 1:51:17Bringing Huser and a pitcher to back and he comes strolling out of the
- 1:51:22bench walking up there toward the plate. Huser at bat with one out of the ninth inning for the Cardinal.
- 1:51:28DeRosha on third base. Infield still playing in close wanting to cut down that run of the plate.
- 1:51:35Cardinals are three runs ahead now they don't want to bad anymore because they're going to be coming up
- 1:51:40job to get those three back if they can do it.
- 1:51:43Huser back right-handed Infield still in and he swings and follows the first one on the ground
- 1:51:48back between what strike one one strike on Huser.
- 1:52:06One strike on Huser.
- 1:52:10Pitcher waiting out there again as the time he's winding up.
- 1:52:13He throws and he swings amidst the fastball inside for strike two. That makes it two strikes on Huser.
- 1:52:23One up DeRosha on third base Cardinals leading four to one in the first half of the ninth inning.
- 1:52:29Davis again starts to wind up. Throws and the hitter takes a ball inside and low.
- 1:52:34So it's one on two one ball and two strikes.
- 1:52:45Davis winds up again. Throws and the hitter swings and misses striking out
- 1:52:49for the second down in the ninth inning and they get two out of the ninth for the Cardinals
- 1:52:53and Terry Moore the Cardinals center fielder is at back.
- 1:53:04Moore up there at the plate just waiting out there. Hits the sign, starts to wind up.
- 1:53:09Pitchers and the hitter swings in a little looping fly on left field and it drops in there for a base
- 1:53:13hit with another run scoring. He's going for two. Allen gets the ball throws it to second base but
- 1:53:18Moore slides in head first and stretches it to a two base hit. That's what we call a technical leaguer.
- 1:53:24A little looping fly off the handle of the bat that just dropped out over the infield too far in for
- 1:53:31Allen to reach and by fast running Moore stretches it to a double. DeRosha scores easily.
- 1:53:37You get the Cardinals now a five to one lead over the top in the ninth inning and Frankie Briggs
- 1:53:44is the fast. Davis throws the first one, Frank reaches out hits another one into left field but
- 1:53:50Allen is in and he has to block it. He can't get in enough to get it. Drops for another base hit
- 1:53:54and another run score. I thought Allen was going to get that ball. I think he thought it was sinking
- 1:54:03faster than it was and by the time he got in to get a hold of it he decided he couldn't reach it
- 1:54:08so he stopped and the ball landed right at his feet and it's a single to permit Moore to score
- 1:54:13also and give the Cardinals now a six to one lead in the ninth inning and bring Pepper Martin to bat.
- 1:54:28Davis watched first base pretty closely then pitches and kept taking wide on across the
- 1:54:33knee from ball one. One ball called. Two runs home in the ninth and Briggs still on first base. Davis
- 1:54:42throws again and the hitter swings hit a boundary. Jurgis goes to his left, gets it on a nasty hop,
- 1:54:47throws the second and Briggs is forced up for the third out ending the ninth inning but not until
- 1:54:52further damage has been done. As far as the cover concerned or if you're on the other side
- 1:54:58it might stay further profit by the Cardinals. Two runs, three hits, one man left on base
- 1:55:05in the first half of the ninth inning and the Cardinals are leading the Cubs by a score of six
- 1:55:10to one as the Cubs come to bat in the last half of the ninth inning. Gaby Hartnett the first man up
- 1:55:16the Cubs needing five runs to tie it up and six to win. Broadcast of the Cubs Cardinal game coming

- 1:55:41this is WCFL at Chicago.
- 1:55:43Gaby Hartnett is up there at the plate.
- 1:55:52Yusra has finished the warm-up. Cardinals aren't taking any chances now keeping big
- 1:55:57George Earnshaw warmed up out on the right field bullpen just threw one that gets clear past
- 1:56:02the catcher and bounded way out along the fence in front of the right field bleachers.
- 1:56:07Gaby Hartnett talking to David he steps up there to the plate
- 1:56:16and Yusra starts to wind up he pitches and Gaby takes the ball it's over the plate but too low
- 1:56:22one ball call
- 1:56:26wait out there again boy preaching to Rocha talking it up Rocha's playing way back in the grass
- 1:56:31over back to his position and Gaby follows the next one back onto the net back in the plate for
- 1:56:36strike one making one ball and one strike on Hartnett.
- 1:56:46And the pitcher throws and Gaby swings hit a boundary down the shortstop Rocha comes in fast
- 1:56:50Guchet throws the first throws in the dirt but Maia Guchet and hangs on to the base with his foot
- 1:56:55at the same time he's got Hartnett for the first out in the ninth inning one out of the ninth inning
- 1:57:01for the cup and strike Demery is at best.
- 1:57:14Throw the first one and Frank takes a strike fast ball over the heart of the plate
- 1:57:19way high one strike on Demery and Yusra throws again at the strike two
- 1:57:28that's the inside corner down around the knees and it makes it two strikes on Demery.
- 1:57:40And the pitcher throws and it's ball one this time wide for the count is one and two.
- 1:57:45Two. One ball and two strikes.
- 1:57:53Yusra throws again and Demery swings and misses striking out for the second out of the ninth inning.
- 1:57:59Makes it two out of the ninth inning for the cup and the next man up there Stanley Hackensack.
- 1:58:04Yusra getting his time starting to move towards the exit a whole lot of it.
- 1:58:19Yusra starts to wind up pitches and Hack takes a strike over the heart of the plate way high.
- 1:58:24One strike on Hack.
- 1:58:25He throws again and it's a strike two.
- 1:58:34Woo! So just over the plate of Beauty just barely knee high.
- 1:58:38Down there low but knee high over the plate and it's two strikes on Hack. Two strikes to count.
- 1:58:49There's the first ball it's wide and low so it's one ball and two strikes on Hack.
- 1:58:53One and two.
- 1:58:59Winding up again. Throws and it's ball two. It's inside across the knees and now the pitcher yells
- 1:59:06though he thought that one was good. Looked to be way inside. Davis also says something about it.
- 1:59:12Now it's two and two. Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:59:14And there's ball three inside and low making it three and two on Hack.
- 1:59:20Three balls and two strikes. Davis walks out in front of the plate and just slams the ball.
- 1:59:24Back in the pitcher.
- 1:59:33Winding up again. Throws and hitter swings in a slow boundary.
- 1:59:37Groshe comes in got the throw to first and Hack it back in.
- 1:59:40The third out and the Cardinals win by a score of six to one in a ball game.
- 1:59:45Quite a ball game right up to the very end.
