- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day. Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Paps. Paul,
- 0:20Speaker 3: we got game number two in the books. What'd you
- 0:23Speaker 3: think of football down under? You know, it was so sunny.
- 0:26Speaker 4: That game, I think it kicked off at 1030 in
- 0:27Speaker 4: the morning, Melbourne time. The uniforms popped. It looks so awesome.
- 0:32Speaker 4: The field on Netflix. The uniforms really, really popped. Is
- 0:35Speaker 4: it that sunny there?
- 0:36Speaker 3: I guess so.
- 0:36Speaker 5: Dan Patrick said he was down there.
- 0:38Speaker 3: And sunscreen is a major issue in Australia, apparently.
- 0:42Speaker 4: Okay, if I asked you right before kickoff, The game's
- 0:44Speaker 4: going to finish 27-7. You'd said what?
- 0:47Speaker 3: I would have said, wow, what a game for Miles Garrett.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Look at that Rams defense. Story of the year. But
- 0:52Speaker 3: what happened?
- 0:52Speaker 4: How would you describe this game for those who.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Okay. So it started out pretty even. And then at
- 0:58Speaker 3: a certain point, the Rams gave up. Gave up?
- 1:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:02Speaker 3: At a certain point, you said enough travel talk. But
- 1:06Speaker 3: to me, that is actually the story of the game.
- 1:08Speaker 3: The Rams did not look ready to play. They came
- 1:10Speaker 3: to Australia too late.
- 1:12Speaker 4: It did feel like there's a point in the third
- 1:13Speaker 4: quarter where Matthew Stafford goes for a quarterback sneak at
- 1:16Speaker 4: the goal line, which they don't do that a lot.
- 1:18Speaker 4: I think he's had one QB sneak touchdown in his
- 1:20Speaker 4: Rams career. They didn't make it. The review couldn't tell anything.
- 1:23Speaker 4: It was just a big pile. And then the 49ers
- 1:26Speaker 4: went on a 99-yard touchdown run, not a drive, and
- 1:29Speaker 4: it felt like The Rams said, okay, it's time to
- 1:31Speaker 4: start heading back home. This was almost a touchdown.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:34Speaker 5: I kind of thought that was a touchdown.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:37Speaker 4: I'm not sure how. Well, I guess the ball was, oh,
- 1:39Speaker 4: that looks like a touchdown.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:40Speaker 4: But when Stafford doesn't get in here, the air went
- 1:43Speaker 4: out of their balloon.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Yeah. The funny thing is, I actually think it probably
- 1:45Speaker 3: was a touchdown. They just couldn't prove it. So whatever
- 1:48Speaker 3: they called on the field was going to stick. Actually,
- 1:50Speaker 3: I could see a little thought bubble off of Matthew Stafford.
- 1:53Speaker 3: After that play, he came back and said, well, I'm
- 1:55Speaker 3: going to order the chicken on the plane back, and
- 1:57Speaker 3: I'm going to watch Project Hail Mary. It's going to
- 1:59Speaker 3: be really fun. Yeah. They checked out completely. And normally
- 2:03Speaker 3: I would rip a team if I thought they gave up.
- 2:05Speaker 3: But going to Australia had, I think, a big toll
- 2:07Speaker 3: on this Rams team.
- 2:08Speaker 5: They're not young.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Again, it's a cliche to talk about the travel science,
- 2:12Speaker 3: but the Niners had it right and the Rams had
- 2:14Speaker 3: it wrong.
- 2:15Speaker 4: You know, it's weird, though, because if somehow the Rams
- 2:17Speaker 4: did win this, is there a reason to worry about
- 2:19Speaker 4: the Rams? I don't worry after week one. And I
- 2:22Speaker 4: think Vegas still has them as a favorite. So you
- 2:24Speaker 4: don't worry either. I think you might worry about Miles Garrett.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Was he not in shape or is he injured in
- 2:30Speaker 4: some fashion? That would be a concern.
- 2:31Speaker 3: That's a concern.
- 2:32Speaker 4: That's a concern. But the general offense doesn't concern me
- 2:35Speaker 4: because Puka's Puka. Their running back tandem is really good.
- 2:38Speaker 4: But let's go to the other side of this, the 49ers.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Have we been sleeping a little bit on the 49ers
- 2:42Speaker 4: because of their struggles with health and things in the offseason,
- 2:45Speaker 4: previous seasons?
- 2:47Speaker 5: I think I've been sleeping on the 49ers.
- 2:49Speaker 3: I had no idea that Fred Warner was going to
- 2:51Speaker 3: be Fred Warner and Nick Bosa was going to be explosive.
- 2:54Speaker 5: Kittle wasn't quite as good as the other guys.
- 2:56Speaker 4: But he was present.
- 2:56Speaker 3: But he was present. Debo Samuel looked thin and ready
- 2:59Speaker 3: to go. It was the fountain of youth. CMC looked great.
- 3:03Speaker 3: And then Christian McCaffrey had some help in the backfield.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Everything worked perfectly.
- 3:09Speaker 4: You mentioned Nick Bosa. People don't talk about him as
- 3:11Speaker 4: much as they used to when he was Defensive Player
- 3:13Speaker 4: of the Year. He was all over Stafford the entire game.
- 3:16Speaker 4: And then if you look at what they did on offense,
- 3:18Speaker 4: they split carries. Kalen Black, the rookie out of Indiana,
- 3:22Speaker 4: he had as many touches as Christian McCaffrey. And that's
- 3:24Speaker 4: one of those things that... Maybe that's smart for the future.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Let's balance these guys out. Keep McCaffrey healthy in January, February.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Yeah, and quarterback Brock Purdy looked good, was running around.
- 3:34Speaker 3: You know who, to me, the MVP of the game,
- 3:36Speaker 3: and we're going to give out stickers later, Paul?
- 3:38Speaker 4: We're saving stickers.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Okay.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Well, I'll just say Kyle Shanahan outcoached the Rams pretty
- 3:43Speaker 3: decisively here. You can see on the Niners' opening drive,
- 3:45Speaker 3: they went 15 plays, kept the ball away from Matthew
- 3:48Speaker 3: Stafford and the Rams.
- 3:49Speaker 5: The rhythm went to the Niners. Brilliant plan.
- 3:51Speaker 3: I think Shanahan has had months to think about this game,
- 3:55Speaker 3: and he was ready to go.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Okay, but if you're a 49ers fan, do you feel
- 3:57Speaker 4: great today? Do you feel long-term great or short-term great?
- 4:01Speaker 3: You feel great. Yes, there's always the injury risk. You
- 4:03Speaker 3: have a lot of players over 30, but you don't
- 4:05Speaker 3: think about that at all today. You get to kick back,
- 4:08Speaker 3: watch football this weekend, and you're 1-0.
- 4:10Speaker 4: And the other thing is, when you're watching the running
- 4:12Speaker 4: backs from the Niners just chop through the line, you're thinking...
- 4:15Speaker 4: Aaron Donald's at home right now, sitting there watching this game,
- 4:18Speaker 4: and he could be stuffing this whole thing up.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Absolutely. If you are a Niners fan, also, you have
- 4:22Speaker 3: the Cardinals and the Dolphins coming up next.
- 4:25Speaker 5: So.
- 4:26Speaker 3: probably 3-0 and probably come out of that healthy. And remember,
- 4:30Speaker 3: they were just in the Super Bowl a few years ago.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Maybe this is Shanahan's chance to finally get the Super Bowl.
- 4:34Speaker 4: Last thing I love about Brock Purdy, three touchdowns for
- 4:37Speaker 4: Brock Purdy, really great second half. He likes to run
- 4:39Speaker 4: the ball. He's got a little giddy up, as they
- 4:40Speaker 4: like to say in college football, but he never, almost never,
- 4:44Speaker 4: I'd say not never, but this time of year in September,
- 4:46Speaker 4: he doesn't take on contact.
- 4:47Speaker 5: No, he gets out of bounds, and he slides. He
- 4:49Speaker 5: looked really spry.
- 4:51Speaker 3: They've been talking about him in camp all summer, how
- 4:54Speaker 3: this was his best training camp he's had in a
- 4:55Speaker 3: long time, and he completely delivered.
- 4:58Speaker 4: And Matthew Stafford, he doesn't run. He barely walks.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Oh, my gosh. To me, that actually— and let's transition to
- 5:04Speaker 3: the Rams here for a second.
- 5:05Speaker 5: Stafford struggles. Really shocked me.
- 5:07Speaker 4: But that's a short-term, long-term concern.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Well, I mean, still, he's been held under 10 points
- 5:12Speaker 3: twice in 85 starts. He looked hurried. He looked inaccurate.
- 5:17Speaker 3: He either overthrew guys or underthrew them. The interception was concerning.
- 5:21Speaker 5: You know what?
- 5:22Speaker 3: He's getting older. I saw the age last night, Paul.
- 5:25Speaker 3: No shocker.
- 5:25Speaker 5: He was on a plane for 18 hours. You don't
- 5:27Speaker 5: put an old guy on a plane like that, Paul.
- 5:29Speaker 3: You know that.
- 5:30Speaker 4: Yeah, my grandfather told me, don't put an old guy
- 5:32Speaker 4: on a plane to Melbourne to play football. We always
- 5:34Speaker 4: know that. All right, let's get to some NSF news.
- 5:36Speaker 4: helmet stickers. We put the sticker on the helmet. The
- 5:38Speaker 4: player chooses whether to wear it next week or not.
- 5:40Speaker 4: I'm going to go first, Perloff, and I'm going to
- 5:42Speaker 4: go offensive tackle Trent Williams. Trent Williams yesterday, I wouldn't
- 5:45Speaker 4: say ate up Myles Garrett, but he made Myles Garrett
- 5:48Speaker 4: irrelevant for a game. And that doesn't happen very often.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Myles Garrett always gets one or two or three hits
- 5:53Speaker 4: on a quarterback at the very minimum. But Trent Williams
- 5:56Speaker 4: reminded everybody that I'm the best offensive lineman in the
- 5:58Speaker 4: game and the best pass blocker in the past 15 years.
- 6:01Speaker 4: And even Miles Garrett can't get by me. So he
- 6:04Speaker 4: gets my helmet sticker.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like he's not aging. But I'm going to
- 6:06Speaker 3: not so fast you. How is that possible? Trent Williams
- 6:10Speaker 3: got all this love last night. Guess who helped him
- 6:12Speaker 3: a lot?
- 6:13Speaker 5: Two men.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Brock Purdy and Kyle Shanahan. Purdy got rid of the
- 6:16Speaker 3: ball immediately, every time.
- 6:18Speaker 4: Are you saying it's system blocking?
- 6:19Speaker 5: It was totally, he wasn't holding onto the ball.
- 6:21Speaker 3: He had to block Bosa or whoever for, I'm sorry,
- 6:23Speaker 3: he had to block Myles Garrett for one second.
- 6:25Speaker 5: He's pretty got rid of the ball so fast. And
- 6:28Speaker 5: that was all Shanahan.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Shanahan neutralized Myles Garrett on his own. Now Garrett was
- 6:33Speaker 3: still moving pretty fast. I know there's concerns about his health.
- 6:36Speaker 3: But he finally got to Purdy, and Purdy had already
- 6:38Speaker 3: gotten rid of the ball every time.
- 6:39Speaker 4: Who's your helmet sticker for?
- 6:41Speaker 3: That's got to be Kyle Shanahan. You know, listen, Sean
- 6:43Speaker 3: McVay is on 60 Minutes this weekend. He's getting all
- 6:46Speaker 3: the hype.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Really?
- 6:46Speaker 3: He's kind of considered the best coach in football. I
- 6:48Speaker 3: think Kyle Shanahan said, not so fast.
- 6:50Speaker 4: That hat is very becoming, by the way.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Yeah. By the way, you couldn't see the injury from
- 6:55Speaker 3: the car crash this summer. I thought Kyle Shanahan had
- 6:57Speaker 3: his team ready to play. He won the battle of
- 7:00Speaker 3: which is the approach to international travel. His game plan
- 7:02Speaker 3: was brilliant. You did not know it was coming. A
- 7:04Speaker 3: lot of short passes to keep the Rams off balance.
- 7:08Speaker 3: I'm a huge Kyle Shanahan play caller fan. Can he
- 7:10Speaker 3: win the big game? That's TBD. But in a game
- 7:13Speaker 3: like this, you saw his brilliance at work.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Can I give a bonus helmet sticker to Netflix's new analyst,
- 7:18Speaker 4: Luke Kuechly?
- 7:19Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 7:19Speaker 6: Big stage.
- 7:20Speaker 4: He worked his way out, and he had some really
- 7:22Speaker 4: good stories, some really good fun stuff. He had a
- 7:24Speaker 4: story about Trent Williams. Luke Kuechly said, I went up
- 7:27Speaker 4: against Trent Williams, and he pushed me into the sidelines
- 7:29Speaker 4: like I was a small child. And I thought it was–
- 7:31Speaker 4: Luke Kuechly had a nice night. I'm going to give
- 7:32Speaker 4: him a bonus helmet sticker.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Yeah, Kuechly was great.
- 7:35Speaker 5: The whole Netflix thing, did you watch the Jonas Brothers
- 7:37Speaker 5: at halftime?
- 7:37Speaker 3: Of course.
- 7:39Speaker 4: That's an insult to ask me.
- 7:40Speaker 5: Yeah, it was a good job. I'm so glad football's back.
- 7:43Speaker 4: All right, some bad news, though.
- 7:44Speaker 3: A.J.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Brown, the wide receiver, the new wide receiver, the Patriots,
- 7:48Speaker 4: he has a high ankle sprain, which is never good.
- 7:50Speaker 4: I don't know why it's worse than low ankle sprain.
- 7:52Speaker 4: But here's the thing. Out four weeks, and when you're 0-1–
- 7:56Speaker 4: and the Patriots have Steelers, Jaguars, Bills over the next
- 7:59Speaker 4: three weeks, that could be a problem math-wise. Now, they
- 8:03Speaker 4: still have a good team, very good defense. Drake May
- 8:05Speaker 4: is there. But if you somehow go 1-3 or, God forbid, 0-4...
- 8:10Speaker 4: You could be in that position where you're just underwater,
- 8:12Speaker 4: treading water the rest.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Of the season.
- 8:13Speaker 7: Right.
- 8:14Speaker 3: And you've got to think about Drake May's confidence. Obviously,
- 8:16Speaker 3: the opener was not good for him. There's this narrative
- 8:19Speaker 3: out there that Drake May got great numbers last year
- 8:21Speaker 3: because he was playing a lot of bad teams.
- 8:24Speaker 5: And now, this year, the schedule's much harder.
- 8:26Speaker 3: He needs an A.J.
- 8:27Speaker 5: Brown for security.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Right. If you want to lose A.J.
- 8:29Speaker 4: Brown, can we lose him for the Raiders-Jets series, not
- 8:32Speaker 4: the next three games, Steelers-Jags-Bills?
- 8:34Speaker 3: If you looked at the game on Wednesday night, you
- 8:36Speaker 3: could see the difference between A.J.
- 8:38Speaker 5: Brown running routes and other guys running routes.
- 8:40Speaker 4: Here's where they are right now. Romeo Dobbs, who was
- 8:42Speaker 4: 0 for the other night. DeMario Douglas. Mack Hollins is
- 8:45Speaker 4: really stepping up. That's a guy who's probably going to
- 8:47Speaker 4: catch a lot of things. Remember a month ago, they
- 8:49Speaker 4: let Kayshaun Booty go in that trade. He's got some
- 8:52Speaker 4: off-field issues to the Texans. That's a guy... Not so fast, man.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Well, Matt Collins has been around for a while. I
- 8:57Speaker 3: love Matt Collins. You know, he doesn't wear shoes when
- 8:59Speaker 3: he's not on the field. Walks around barefoot.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Respect.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Incredible person. But he can't be your go-to guy, Paul.
- 9:05Speaker 3: You know, he said four weeks. Let's hope it's four weeks.
- 9:08Speaker 4: The three-week go-to guy.
- 9:09Speaker 6: All right, real quick.
- 9:10Speaker 4: The NFL weekend.
- 9:11Speaker 6: Bills, Texans.
- 9:11Speaker 4: We're going to chop that up later. Packers, Vikings.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Kyler Murray.
- 9:15Speaker 4: Saucy?
- 9:16Speaker 3: That is so interesting. Kyle Murray, that to me might
- 9:20Speaker 3: be the most interesting quarterback situation, but you really don't know.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Yep, we got Buccaneers, Bengals, Ravens, Colts, Falcons, Steelers, and
- 9:27Speaker 4: we don't know about Tua and who's starting there.
- 9:30Speaker 3: If it's not Tua and it's Cooper Rush for the Falcons,
- 9:34Speaker 3: that's going to be an ugly game. Steelers play ugly games.
- 9:36Speaker 4: I think Michael Penix is four-string right now because of
- 9:39Speaker 4: health issues. Commanders, Eagles, then let's wrap it up with Cowboys, Giants,
- 9:43Speaker 4: Sunday Night Football, NBC, Saucy?
- 9:46Speaker 3: I think it's awesome.
- 9:47Speaker 5: Do you think people are going to watch this game?
- 9:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I think everyone's going to watch this game.
- 9:50Speaker 3: I think you're going to have more people watching this
- 9:52Speaker 3: game than really any sporting event that's not the NFL.
- 9:55Speaker 3: This is a big test. I have more on the
- 9:57Speaker 3: Cowboys later, but the Giants will be getting some buzz today.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I think everyone wants to see if neighbors can
- 10:03Speaker 4: come back, if Scadigaboo can come back, and if Jackson
- 10:05Speaker 4: Dark can run. and stay away from the blue tent.
- 10:07Speaker 3: Yeah, and also the Cowboys-Giants is always a big rating.
- 10:10Speaker 3: This year, I think it deserves it because these are
- 10:12Speaker 3: very interesting teams. All of week one is huge. Kyler Murray,
- 10:16Speaker 3: that's the guy I'm really watching ball.
- 10:18Speaker 4: He needs a ball out game just so everyone can
- 10:21Speaker 4: quiet down about him.
- 10:22Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 10:22Speaker 3: All right, coming up next, Michigan. Will they rebound tomorrow
- 10:26Speaker 3: against Oklahoma? I'll tell you right now, not so fast
- 10:30Speaker 3: is not so sure.
- 10:31Speaker 5: That's next.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Here we go, Pearl. Not so fast. Pass to Pearl
- 10:36Speaker 4: off the midday pick-me-up to get you ready. Let's go
- 10:38Speaker 4: back to Melbourne. Ooh, look at these fellas. I don't
- 10:42Speaker 4: know if they're locals or they went in for the game,
- 10:44Speaker 4: but they're doing the old drink-out-of-the-boot thing.
- 10:46Speaker 5: Yeah, did you do that in college, Paul?
- 10:48Speaker 4: Surprisingly, no. I drank just about everything that was available,
- 10:51Speaker 4: but I always like... I don't need this. I don't
- 10:54Speaker 4: need boot beer.
- 10:55Speaker 3: So they're taking boot and rally to the next level?
- 10:58Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the boot, and I don't know if either
- 11:01Speaker 4: of those guys rally, but that looks a little disgusting.
- 11:03Speaker 4: Time for warm takes here on Not So Fast with
- 11:05Speaker 4: Pabst and Perloff. A little cozy stuff to get you
- 11:07Speaker 4: into the weekend. I'm going to go first on the
- 11:09Speaker 4: warm takes. Here we go, Perloff. Look at the college
- 11:13Speaker 4: football ratings from this weekend. Notre Dame versus Wisconsin was
- 11:16Speaker 4: a monster rating, and Wisconsin's not even that good. Louisville-Ole
- 11:19Speaker 4: Miss was a great rating. All these kind of created
- 11:21Speaker 4: matchups were fantastic ratings for college football. I wonder if,
- 11:25Speaker 4: as we get to a 2014 playoff, which seems inevitable,
- 11:28Speaker 4: instead of the regular season being more, you've got to
- 11:31Speaker 4: schedule cupcakes because that could make it into the playoffs,
- 11:33Speaker 4: do these college football teams think, why don't we schedule
- 11:36Speaker 4: heavyweights for our out-of-conference games? And this can work for you.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Look at Ohio State versus Texas this weekend. The loser
- 11:43Speaker 4: of this game doesn't lose a thing with the college
- 11:45Speaker 4: football committee. You get credit for playing in a heavyweight
- 11:47Speaker 4: game early in the season. You lose by four points,
- 11:50Speaker 4: Texas or Ohio State, you're just fine. Now, if you're
- 11:53Speaker 4: Michigan and you lose, which they did to Western Michigan.
- 11:56Speaker 4: That is debilitating. That takes you out of the top 25.
- 11:59Speaker 4: So I'm wondering if this has a reverse effect, the
- 12:01Speaker 4: 2014 playoff, that I'm going to schedule bigger. I'm going
- 12:04Speaker 4: to schedule heavyweights. I'm going to, you know, Notre Dame
- 12:06Speaker 4: and USC will get back together. Michigan, Notre Dame get
- 12:08Speaker 4: back together. Texas at Texas A & M every year.
- 12:12Speaker 4: I think that's what's going to happen going forward because
- 12:14Speaker 4: there's more money to be made. Neutral site, home games.
- 12:17Speaker 4: If Texas faces Texas State, people leave. They don't stay.
- 12:21Speaker 4: They don't spend money. But if Texas has Texas A &
- 12:23Speaker 4: M in week two, you got something.
- 12:26Speaker 5: I could not disagree with you more, Paul. Oh, come on.
- 12:29Speaker 3: You're telling me if Texas didn't lose to Ohio State
- 12:31Speaker 3: last year, 14-7 in opening week, they wouldn't have been
- 12:34Speaker 3: in the playoff? They had three losses. They would have
- 12:35Speaker 3: made the playoff last year. I know what you're saying.
- 12:39Speaker 3: You've got to play it safe. Notre Dame last year,
- 12:42Speaker 3: if they didn't have Miami and A & M early
- 12:43Speaker 3: in the schedule and had Ball State and Youngstown State,
- 12:46Speaker 3: they would have been in the playoff.
- 12:47Speaker 4: But you still get credit for that. heavyweight game early.
- 12:49Speaker 4: You lose to Florida later in the season. I can't
- 12:51Speaker 4: help you.
- 12:52Speaker 3: I don't think the committee gives you enough credit. I
- 12:54Speaker 3: don't think they pay enough attention to strike the schedule.
- 12:58Speaker 3: I am anti that. I think that they should really
- 13:00Speaker 3: weigh wins more than losses. And if you have three losses,
- 13:04Speaker 3: they immediately.
- 13:05Speaker 5: Kick you out.
- 13:05Speaker 4: You poo-pooed my warm take quick.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I know what you're saying. But I think that's
- 13:08Speaker 3: a wishful warm take. Because if you were the commissioner
- 13:11Speaker 3: of college football, you would have really hard.
- 13:14Speaker 5: Schedules to start the season.
- 13:15Speaker 4: And I'm available then.
- 13:16Speaker 3: You know, if they expand to 24, then maybe we'll
- 13:18Speaker 3: get that. Okay, I'm sticking with college football. There's a
- 13:21Speaker 3: few rules here in Not So Fast. Number one, obviously,
- 13:24Speaker 3: ball don't lie, karma. That means Michigan is going to
- 13:28Speaker 3: lose this weekend because the universe wants them to. It's
- 13:31Speaker 3: not just that they got the extra second to beat
- 13:33Speaker 3: Western Michigan. It's that their fans rushed the field. The
- 13:37Speaker 3: University of Michigan fans rushed the field against Western Michigan.
- 13:41Speaker 3: I think that things need to be corrected in a
- 13:44Speaker 3: universal sense here, and I think that somebody has to
- 13:47Speaker 3: make Michigan pay for these two, in my opinion, transgressions.
- 13:52Speaker 4: Transgressions.
- 13:53Speaker 3: Oklahoma, who they play this weekend, has built a really
- 13:55Speaker 3: good team under our buddy general manager Jim Nagy. They
- 13:58Speaker 3: obviously have John Mateers healthy, ready to go. Paul, they
- 14:01Speaker 3: have a tight end, a backup tight end, whose name
- 14:03Speaker 3: is Rocky Beers. Sort of touched down last week out
- 14:07Speaker 3: of Colorado State. I mean, that's reason enough to root
- 14:09Speaker 3: for them.
- 14:09Speaker 4: If your last name is Beers, you never, ever change it.
- 14:12Speaker 3: It's in Ann Arbor, so it makes me a little nervous,
- 14:14Speaker 3: but I do think that Michigan is going to have
- 14:16Speaker 3: trouble emotionally rebounding from last week.
- 14:19Speaker 4: This is a really serious game, especially for the quarterback
- 14:21Speaker 4: Bryce Underwood of Michigan. He has to both win and
- 14:24Speaker 4: play well. He has to do both of those.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think Oklahoma is underrated. For some reason,
- 14:29Speaker 3: they're under the radar, but they have a really, really
- 14:31Speaker 3: strong roster.
- 14:31Speaker 4: John Mateer, healthy, the quarterback of Oklahoma, he wants to
- 14:34Speaker 4: make a statement. All right, I'm going to go to
- 14:35Speaker 4: my next warm take. I do love when we play,
- 14:38Speaker 4: when I say we, American football plays in other countries. Now,
- 14:40Speaker 4: they've been playing in Europe for a while, even South
- 14:42Speaker 4: America for a while, but this is new to Australia.
- 14:45Speaker 4: And I think of the 60,000 people there, somebody in
- 14:48Speaker 4: Australia is watching American football for the first time ever.
- 14:51Speaker 4: And I wonder what they think when they see American football.
- 14:53Speaker 4: We're used to it. But when they see it and
- 14:55Speaker 4: they see... A bunch of big dudes running around really
- 14:58Speaker 4: hard for four to six seconds, and then they go
- 15:00Speaker 4: and have a meeting for 45 seconds. And then they
- 15:03Speaker 4: run around for four to five seconds, and then, oh,
- 15:05Speaker 4: another meeting. Because that's what it is. It's explosive plays,
- 15:09Speaker 4: and then let's talk about it. Explosive plays. You know,
- 15:12Speaker 4: if you grew up on rugby or soccer, which I didn't,
- 15:15Speaker 4: I used to look at soccer and think, what are
- 15:16Speaker 4: they doing? I don't understand offsides. I don't understand rugby
- 15:19Speaker 4: at all when I was a kid. Imagine what Europeans
- 15:22Speaker 4: and Australians that think of American football and all our
- 15:24Speaker 4: rules are. surviving the ground, in or out. What is
- 15:28Speaker 4: a fair catch? So I'm asking permission not to get hit?
- 15:31Speaker 4: Is that with my hands in the air? So I
- 15:34Speaker 4: imagine if you're in Australia yesterday and you enjoyed American
- 15:37Speaker 4: football for the first time, it will be back because
- 15:38Speaker 4: we want to grow it nationally, internationally. But at some point,
- 15:42Speaker 4: you're thinking, you're looking at your buddy like, they're having
- 15:44Speaker 4: another meeting. Why all these meetings?
- 15:46Speaker 3: Even I don't know the kickoff rules. I watch 14
- 15:49Speaker 3: hours of football a weekend. How about that offside on
- 15:52Speaker 3: the tush push that was kind of made up on
- 15:54Speaker 3: Wednesday night? Explain that, like, what's going on here? All
- 15:57Speaker 3: the rules are so convoluted, and they change 10 rules
- 16:00Speaker 3: every offseason.
- 16:01Speaker 4: And one of the refs, there was a field goal by,
- 16:02Speaker 4: I think, the 49ers. One of the refs did the
- 16:04Speaker 4: old Australian rules football. one of those instead of doing that.
- 16:07Speaker 4: That was kind of cool.
- 16:08Speaker 3: That was very cool.
- 16:09Speaker 5: Okay, that is a good one.
- 16:10Speaker 3: I'm going to go to the NFL for my next
- 16:12Speaker 3: warm take.
- 16:12Speaker 5: 13 games this weekend.
- 16:14Speaker 3: I'm fired up about all of them, but there's one
- 16:16Speaker 3: storyline I really want to.
- 16:17Speaker 5: See, Paul, and that's the Dallas Cowboys defense.
- 16:20Speaker 3: Cowboys got a lot of buzz this preseason, and everyone
- 16:23Speaker 3: thinks their defense will be better than last year.
- 16:25Speaker 5: New coordinator Christian Parker.
- 16:27Speaker 3: It better be.
- 16:28Speaker 5: I'll tell you that right now.
- 16:29Speaker 3: And we'll see against the Giants because the Giants are
- 16:31Speaker 3: going to play conservative football. They're going to try and
- 16:33Speaker 3: run it down the throat of Dallas. Now, Dallas in
- 16:36Speaker 3: the past has been very weak against the run. Now
- 16:38Speaker 3: they have Quinton Williams and Kenny Clark up front. We're
- 16:40Speaker 3: basically going to see, Paul, did the Micah Parsons trade
- 16:44Speaker 3: work out on Sunday? Because Jerry Jones... is saying that
- 16:47Speaker 3: we can stop the run now. We used to not
- 16:49Speaker 3: be able to do that, and we know the offense
- 16:51Speaker 3: is going to be good. So Cam Scadamu, Jackson Dart
- 16:54Speaker 3: are going to be running a lot against Dallas. Do
- 16:56Speaker 3: they hold up? I think if the Cowboys' defense is legit,
- 17:00Speaker 3: then that is one of the key storylines of the
- 17:02Speaker 3: early season because the whole team is going to be good.
- 17:04Speaker 4: And you picked the Cowboys to go deep this year
- 17:06Speaker 4: in the playoffs.
- 17:07Speaker 5: Well, I haven't been winning the division.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Now, postseason Cowboys is always an adventure, Paul. They used
- 17:12Speaker 3: to go 12-5 every year. They'd get blown out in
- 17:14Speaker 3: the playoffs. So I don't know about the playoffs.
- 17:16Speaker 4: It's going to be interesting because the Micah Parsons trade
- 17:18Speaker 4: will be talked about forever. As long as he's injured
- 17:20Speaker 4: and not playing for the Packers, They win. The Cowboys
- 17:23Speaker 4: win because their players are playing. But it's got a
- 17:25Speaker 4: long way to go. I think people are maybe not
- 17:28Speaker 4: so fast with this defense. They think it's going to
- 17:30Speaker 4: be fantastic day one. It may not be day one.
- 17:32Speaker 5: Also, we get to see Caleb Downs at safety, former
- 17:34Speaker 5: Ohio State star. Love him.
- 17:35Speaker 3: I mean, can a rookie safety really lead a defense?
- 17:38Speaker 3: That's what they keep saying in camp, that he's that awesome.
- 17:40Speaker 3: I think we're going to be talking about that on Monday.
- 17:41Speaker 4: The rookie I remember leading a defense or being impactful
- 17:44Speaker 4: was Troy Palamalu out of USC with the Steelers. He
- 17:47Speaker 4: was day one flying around the field.
- 17:48Speaker 3: I mean, we're safety guys. I had Brian Dawkins in Philly.
- 17:51Speaker 3: I know your favorite player maybe ever.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Ed Reed.
- 17:54Speaker 4: My favorite non-Bear ever might be Ed Reed. All right,
- 17:56Speaker 4: it's time to play a little game here in Not
- 17:58Speaker 4: So Fast with Paps and Perloff. It's called Who Said It?
- 18:00Speaker 4: Could be NFL, could be college, could be other. Perloff,
- 18:03Speaker 4: who said this? Here we go. I love playoffs. I
- 18:08Speaker 4: love the big games. I want a chance at the tournament.
- 18:10Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying? Overall, us as an offense,
- 18:13Speaker 4: I want us to proclaim dominance. I want us to
- 18:15Speaker 4: be who we think we are.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Oh, boy.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Okay.
- 18:18Speaker 5: Okay.
- 18:19Speaker 3: So this has got to be a good offensive team.
- 18:22Speaker 3: I'm going to go NFL. I'm going to say this
- 18:25Speaker 3: is Jalen Hurst of the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 18:28Speaker 4: I see tournament. Tournament. I'm going to go Julian Sayen
- 18:31Speaker 4: of Ohio State. This is a tough one. Here we go.
- 18:34Speaker 4: Who said this?
- 18:37Speaker 8: I love playoffs.
- 18:38Speaker 2: I love the big games.
- 18:39Speaker 1: I want a chance at the tournament.
- 18:40Speaker 9: C.D.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Lamb.
- 18:41Speaker 6: Overall, us as an offense, I want us to proclaim dominance.
- 18:44Speaker 8: I want us to be who we think we are.
- 18:47Speaker 4: He threw us off with tournament there. I think he
- 18:48Speaker 4: did it purposely to get us to make a mistake
- 18:50Speaker 4: on who said it.
- 18:51Speaker 3: I kind of like that when people say, you just
- 18:53Speaker 3: got to get into the tournament for football. But I
- 18:55Speaker 3: get half point for right division, Paul?
- 18:57Speaker 4: You get half a point. You know, C.D. Lamb, by
- 18:59Speaker 4: the way, there's a guy who needs playoff success to
- 19:01Speaker 4: add to his resume because he's as good as anybody.
- 19:03Speaker 4: One more who said it, Perloff, NFL, college, or other.
- 19:07Speaker 4: Here we go. Who said this? We got our behinds
- 19:11Speaker 4: kick last time we played, and sometimes in this football
- 19:14Speaker 4: world that happens, right? So when you get behind kick,
- 19:16Speaker 4: you don't forget it. And it didn't end or break us,
- 19:19Speaker 4: but it was a nice wake-up call.
- 19:21Speaker 3: I would like to say the Rams because they got
- 19:23Speaker 3: the big wake-up call.
- 19:24Speaker 4: I think that's a coach. They try not to swear.
- 19:27Speaker 4: I'm going to go Steve Sarkeesian of Texas.
- 19:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm going to double down and go Sark.
- 19:32Speaker 4: Sark. Let's go with Sark on this one.
- 19:36Speaker 9: We got our behinds kick, you know, like the last time,
- 19:39Speaker 9: and we played in. Like sometime in the football world,
- 19:41Speaker 9: like that happens.
- 19:42Speaker 5: Right.
- 19:42Speaker 9: So when you get your your behind kick, you don't
- 19:46Speaker 9: forget it. And it wasn't end us or break us.
- 19:50Speaker 9: But it was a it was definitely a nice, nice
- 19:53Speaker 9: wake up call.
- 19:54Speaker 4: That's Deion Dawkins of the Bills. Talk about the Texans.
- 19:57Speaker 4: And not swearing. Very professional of him. You know, as
- 19:59Speaker 4: a guy who's got his behind kicked a lot in
- 20:01Speaker 4: grade school by the local bullies, I don't ever forget.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Yeah, but you don't really have the size or the
- 20:05Speaker 3: talent of Deion Dawkins.
- 20:07Speaker 4: That is really, really obvious.
- 20:08Speaker 5: A little different.
- 20:09Speaker 4: All right, stick around. We're going to talk to Connor
- 20:11Speaker 4: Rogers of NBC Sports to get you ready for the
- 20:13Speaker 4: college and pro weekend and much, much more.
- 20:15Speaker 5: Stick around.
- 20:16Speaker 4: Not so fast. We'll be right back. The first time
- 20:20Speaker 4: I met Andrew Perloff, I remember it well, I was
- 20:22Speaker 4: with Dan Patrick at the SI Studios in New York.
- 20:24Speaker 3: City, in the offices.
- 20:26Speaker 4: And we were talking to different editors about editing Dan's page.
- 20:30Speaker 4: And the first guy came in, the second guy came in,
- 20:32Speaker 4: and they were normal, nice guys. And Andrew came in
- 20:35Speaker 4: kind of like Kramer, just like papers, and then like
- 20:39Speaker 4: one shirt thing was out. but he was funny and
- 20:42Speaker 4: he had ideas and he was goofy, but he had
- 20:44Speaker 4: ideas and they were funny ideas. And then we met
- 20:47Speaker 4: two more people. And when we got done, Dan and I,
- 20:50Speaker 4: I think we took a train home for God's sake.
- 20:51Speaker 4: And he goes, which guy do you like? I'm like,
- 20:53Speaker 4: you know, it's a tall guy. And we didn't remember
- 20:55Speaker 4: anybody's name. He goes, the guy who looked like McLovin
- 20:58Speaker 4: from Superbad. I'm like, well, he's a little older than that.
- 21:00Speaker 4: Like McLovin's uncle. He goes, yeah, that guy. So we
- 21:03Speaker 4: call back and say like, we like that guy. And
- 21:06Speaker 4: like Andrew Perloff, I'm like, yeah, I think that's his name,
- 21:08Speaker 4: but he stuck out in a good way.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Welcome back. Not so fast.
- 21:15Speaker 5: Perloff and Pabst.
- 21:16Speaker 3: All right. Last week in college football, nuts. What do
- 21:19Speaker 3: you expect this weekend, Paul? Beyond nuts.
- 21:21Speaker 4: I don't even know how to categorize what happened. Western Michigan, Michigan,
- 21:24Speaker 4: all the different games. You got Michigan, Oklahoma this weekend.
- 21:27Speaker 4: You got OSU, Texas this weekend. Rice, Notre Dame, Bama, Kentucky, ISU, Iowa.
- 21:32Speaker 4: That's just the headliners.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I know. It's going to be a great college
- 21:35Speaker 3: football weekend and a great pro football weekend. And if
- 21:37Speaker 3: you want to talk college and pro, there's no one
- 21:39Speaker 3: better than Connor Rodgers. NBC Sports, of course, a co-host
- 21:43Speaker 3: of Chris Simms Unbuttoned every day, 4 p.m. Eastern, part
- 21:47Speaker 3: of the pregame show for college football.
- 21:49Speaker 5: Connor, how are you doing?
- 21:50Speaker 6: I'm great, guys. Thanks for having me.
- 21:52Speaker 5: How are you?
- 21:53Speaker 3: Awesome, dude. First of all, I know how busy you
- 21:55Speaker 3: are trying to control Sims. We've been there before. It's
- 21:59Speaker 3: a hard job. Let's start with college football. Game of
- 22:03Speaker 3: the weekend, Texas, Ohio State. You also do a lot
- 22:05Speaker 3: of NFL draft stuff. It feels like this is a
- 22:08Speaker 3: mini combine in September because there are so many talented players.
- 22:12Speaker 5: How do you see this game playing out?
- 22:14Speaker 6: I mean, it's ridiculous, right?
- 22:15Speaker 10: If you're in the middle covering the draft, it's a
- 22:17Speaker 10: dream scenario because you get the best of both worlds.
- 22:20Speaker 10: I mean, just looking at my preseason top 50 drafts,
- 22:22Speaker 10: Jeremiah Smith was my number one player, the great wide
- 22:25Speaker 10: receiver for Ohio State. I had a ton of Texas
- 22:27Speaker 10: players in the top 10 between their pass rusher, Colin Simmons,
- 22:30Speaker 10: of course, Arch Manning. They got a superstar wide receiver
- 22:33Speaker 10: in Cam Coleman as a transfer this offseason. So it's
- 22:36Speaker 10: not only loaded with NFL prospects, it's loaded with legitimately
- 22:39Speaker 10: blue chippers on both sides of the ball that it's
- 22:42Speaker 10: going to be fascinating because these teams match up really,
- 22:45Speaker 10: really evenly. You know, you kind of try to lean
- 22:47Speaker 10: on the side of the home team in that scenario
- 22:49Speaker 10: as much as that has not gone well for Texas
- 22:51Speaker 10: against Ohio State. Wouldn't shock me, obviously, no matter the
- 22:55Speaker 10: outcome of this game, if both of these teams end
- 22:57Speaker 10: up going really, really far at the end of the year.
- 22:59Speaker 6: This is a big moment for Arch.
- 23:01Speaker 10: I know that's cliche and everybody almost spends too much
- 23:03Speaker 10: time focusing on Arch. I think there's this kind of
- 23:05Speaker 10: myth that he's broken away from the rest of the
- 23:07Speaker 10: quarterback class when I see them as one large group,
- 23:10Speaker 10: as much as I do like him the best out
- 23:12Speaker 10: of all of these guys. But it's also a chance
- 23:14Speaker 10: for Julian Sane, who in theory could be a part
- 23:17Speaker 10: of that quarterback class, to kind of show like, hey,
- 23:19Speaker 10: don't forget about me. I'm a legitimate NFL prospect. But
- 23:22Speaker 10: this could be a statement game from Arch, who has
- 23:25Speaker 10: new weapons. He does have a good offensive line in
- 23:27Speaker 10: front of him. They've done work in the portal with
- 23:29Speaker 10: their run game as well. I just expect, as great
- 23:31Speaker 10: as the Ohio State defense typically is, Texas's offense to
- 23:35Speaker 10: really have the chance to make a statement and actually
- 23:37Speaker 10: come through with it.
- 23:38Speaker 4: I want to go back to Jeremiah Smith, the wide
- 23:40Speaker 4: receiver of Ohio State. You've seen a lot of wide
- 23:42Speaker 4: receivers in your time. Does he comp out better or
- 23:45Speaker 4: rate better than Marvin Harrison Jr. coming out of college?
- 23:48Speaker 6: I think better, which is dangerous, right?
- 23:50Speaker 10: When you, like you say those things and you know,
- 23:53Speaker 10: people are, how they talk about Marv now, I think
- 23:55Speaker 10: is going to have a good year in Arizona and
- 23:57Speaker 10: really settle in, especially with Michael LaFleur there, who will
- 24:00Speaker 10: know how to deploy a number one wide receiver on
- 24:02Speaker 10: the outside.
- 24:02Speaker 6: In his scheme.
- 24:04Speaker 10: I think that they forget what Marv really was at
- 24:06Speaker 10: Ohio state. Now with Jeremiah Smith, I mean, he's got
- 24:09Speaker 10: even more muscle on his frame to power through coverage.
- 24:12Speaker 10: He can fly his strides, just eat up so much turf.
- 24:15Speaker 10: It's really hard to match up with him. He could
- 24:18Speaker 10: be a really good player in the NFL tomorrow. He
- 24:20Speaker 10: just has to play this season of college football.
- 24:23Speaker 6: He's really, really unique.
- 24:24Speaker 10: I'm going to have a tough time when we get
- 24:25Speaker 10: close to the draft, kind of differentiating, or maybe it
- 24:28Speaker 10: won't be that hard. The best receiver prospect I've ever
- 24:31Speaker 10: scouted while doing this was Jamar Chase. But there's a
- 24:34Speaker 10: world where you just look at the physical gifts being
- 24:36Speaker 10: bigger than and playing even stronger, that Jeremiah Smith is
- 24:39Speaker 10: the best wide receiver prospect that I'll end up seeing.
- 24:43Speaker 6: There's people that have.
- 24:43Speaker 10: Been doing it long enough where I can't go back
- 24:45Speaker 10: to this, but they'll bring up Julio Jones, Calvin Johnson.
- 24:49Speaker 6: This is really, really rare air.
- 24:52Speaker 5: You know what's funny, Connor?
- 24:53Speaker 3: He might not even be the best Heisman wide receiver
- 24:56Speaker 3: candidate in college football. What do you make of Malachi
- 24:59Speaker 3: Toney in Miami? I don't know about his NFL future,
- 25:01Speaker 3: but in college, I'm not sure there's a better player.
- 25:05Speaker 10: Just electric, right? You really blink and he could get
- 25:07Speaker 10: one bad angle and he's gone. I know people were
- 25:09Speaker 10: excited about what they saw from Darian Mensah, their transfer
- 25:12Speaker 10: quarterback in that game. But I'm sitting there looking at what,
- 25:14Speaker 10: you know, obviously what Tony can do and. You know,
- 25:17Speaker 10: when people get to dangerous player comparisons, there will be
- 25:20Speaker 10: people that will be like, is this Tyreek Hill again?
- 25:22Speaker 6: When you just look at the game-changing speed.
- 25:25Speaker 10: I'm not ready to go there, and the perfect part
- 25:27Speaker 10: is we have a lot of time left with him
- 25:29Speaker 10: at the college.
- 25:29Speaker 6: Level to do that.
- 25:30Speaker 10: But guys like that, that just move in that kind
- 25:33Speaker 10: of way that you purely can't match up with, but
- 25:35Speaker 10: you give any kind of space and zone, they're a
- 25:38Speaker 10: real problem. And there's an argument this Miami team is
- 25:41Speaker 10: somehow better than last year's Miami team.
- 25:43Speaker 4: I want to go to Michigan at Oklahoma. I think
- 25:45Speaker 4: they're getting 5.5 Michigan. it feels like Michigan's coming off
- 25:48Speaker 4: a loss. It's almost like a perception loss for Michigan,
- 25:51Speaker 4: not an actual loss. But Bryce Underwood, their quarterback, who's
- 25:54Speaker 4: making millions of dollars to be their quarterback, I wouldn't
- 25:57Speaker 4: say it's a must-win game for him, but is it
- 25:58Speaker 4: a must-play-well game for him?
- 26:01Speaker 3: Definitely.
- 26:01Speaker 10: I mean, you heard Winningham, whether it was after the
- 26:05Speaker 10: game or the day after the game, kind of saying like, hey,
- 26:07Speaker 10: it's not infinite here with him. So nothing is guaranteed
- 26:11Speaker 10: to him, no matter how much you were paid, especially
- 26:13Speaker 10: when besides the second Hail Mary, how poorly he played.
- 26:18Speaker 10: I think what's more concerning for Michigan is I thought
- 26:20Speaker 10: they were largely outclassed for almost the whole game for
- 26:22Speaker 10: much of it. I felt like they were outcoached, outplayed.
- 26:26Speaker 10: They didn't feel like the physically imposing team. For Oklahoma,
- 26:29Speaker 10: I'll say this on the other side, you're walking into
- 26:30Speaker 10: a situation, you're playing a team in Oklahoma, that this
- 26:32Speaker 10: is a must win for Oklahoma because of how hard
- 26:35Speaker 10: their schedule is. They got to be looking at this
- 26:36Speaker 10: and going, we're better than Michigan, especially with what Michigan
- 26:39Speaker 10: just showed last week. We're going to go in there
- 26:41Speaker 10: and take care of business and then look towards the
- 26:43Speaker 10: rest of our schedule, which can get much, much harder.
- 26:45Speaker 6: So Michigan, this is the same story with them.
- 26:47Speaker 10: But now it's magnified because of not only the money
- 26:50Speaker 10: that Bryce is making, but You're expected to take steps forward.
- 26:53Speaker 10: If you have no consistent passing game in college football,
- 26:56Speaker 10: forget being put in the class of the big dogs.
- 26:59Speaker 10: It's hard to rank them in the top 25 after that.
- 27:01Speaker 3: Connor, what do you want to see out of Notre
- 27:03Speaker 3: Dame playing Rice, NBC? You know, obviously they should win.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Last week they started off slow against Wisconsin, picked it up.
- 27:10Speaker 3: A lot of easy games on the early part of
- 27:12Speaker 3: the schedule. But still, I think it's championship or bust
- 27:15Speaker 3: for many people's eyes. So what do you want to
- 27:17Speaker 3: see in a game like.
- 27:17Speaker 5: This on Saturday?
- 27:19Speaker 6: Quite simply, rhythm and timing in the pass game. I
- 27:21Speaker 6: thought C.J.
- 27:22Speaker 10: Carr, who I like a lot, he just looked a
- 27:24Speaker 10: little jittery in the first half and then didn't really
- 27:27Speaker 10: have to do a whole ton. That's a team that
- 27:30Speaker 10: they have an NFL secondary, and now their safety, Tay Johnson,
- 27:33Speaker 10: who could be a top 50 pick, is hurt again.
- 27:35Speaker 10: But Leonard Moore, there's an argument he's going to be
- 27:37Speaker 10: the best defensive player in the draft and as good
- 27:40Speaker 10: as a corner prospect as we've seen the last 10 years.
- 27:43Speaker 6: But that offense, they did such a good job protecting C.J.
- 27:46Speaker 10: Carr last year, and he was phenomenal when protected. The
- 27:49Speaker 10: very small sample size, which was I think less than
- 27:51Speaker 10: 100 snaps he was pressured on last year, there was
- 27:53Speaker 10: some questions. And that's not surprising for a young quarterback.
- 27:56Speaker 10: And this year, a redshirt sophomore quarterback that, you know,
- 27:59Speaker 10: he can really attack all three levels of the field
- 28:01Speaker 10: with timing, touch, and accuracy. Just want to see that
- 28:04Speaker 10: against an opponent like Rice and get your offense a
- 28:07Speaker 10: little rhythm and some of the movement they've had on
- 28:08Speaker 10: the offensive line, let those guys gel together because they had,
- 28:11Speaker 10: you don't say that a lot about Notre Dame. They
- 28:13Speaker 10: had some tough moments on the offensive line and pass
- 28:15Speaker 10: pro last week.
- 28:16Speaker 1: All right.
- 28:16Speaker 4: Let me ask you a kind of a two-part question,
- 28:18Speaker 4: which is more likely to happen towards the end of
- 28:21Speaker 4: the season. Dabo Sweeney is out of a job or
- 28:24Speaker 4: Lane Kiffin is in the national title game with LSU.
- 28:27Speaker 6: Oh man, I'll go back to Dabo. I just, It
- 28:31Speaker 6: just feels like it's time.
- 28:33Speaker 2: It does.
- 28:33Speaker 10: And, you know, obviously there's a lot of good things
- 28:35Speaker 10: to feel about with Lane and LSU and a team
- 28:38Speaker 10: that was built in the portal and did a really
- 28:40Speaker 10: good job and how he gets them ready to play and,
- 28:43Speaker 10: you know, how buttoned up and gifted they are on
- 28:45Speaker 10: offense under him, no matter where he goes.
- 28:47Speaker 6: But you look at Dabo.
- 28:49Speaker 10: And my problem with Clemson guys is everybody kind of
- 28:51Speaker 10: falls back on rightly. So have they fallen behind of
- 28:54Speaker 10: how to build a roster in college football because of
- 28:56Speaker 10: how they don't compete in the portal the same way that,
- 28:59Speaker 10: you know, you look at, you know, look at Indiana
- 29:01Speaker 10: winning the national championship last year.
- 29:02Speaker 6: That's the easiest example, but it's a lot of teams.
- 29:05Speaker 10: I don't think Clemson is a well-coached team anymore. Obviously,
- 29:08Speaker 10: the change of coordinators over the years, but you watch
- 29:10Speaker 10: them play, whether it's schematically, how they build their team.
- 29:13Speaker 10: They have NFL talent. The guys like me that do
- 29:16Speaker 10: the draft do this every summer. Oh, all this NFL
- 29:18Speaker 10: talent in the front seven for Clemson. And then, you know,
- 29:21Speaker 10: you get boat raced. And it's like, how is this happening?
- 29:23Speaker 10: Because I know this is a good player.
- 29:25Speaker 4: Connor, I noticed your phone ring there. Was that Dabo
- 29:27Speaker 4: ringing you up because you criticized him like he did
- 29:29Speaker 4: that reporter.
- 29:30Speaker 3: The other day?
- 29:31Speaker 10: Yeah, that was actually my very delayed alarm for your guys' show,
- 29:34Speaker 10: so you can tell how organized I am right now.
- 29:36Speaker 6: Really poor form from me.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Not a good day, man.
- 29:38Speaker 3: No, that's great. Connor, you also cover the Jets, speaking
- 29:41Speaker 3: of mistakes. It looks like a tank from the outside.
- 29:47Speaker 3: You've been around the building. What do you expect from
- 29:48Speaker 3: the Jets this year?
- 29:50Speaker 6: They're in such a weird place.
- 29:51Speaker 10: I always find it, and I've been around the Jets
- 29:53Speaker 10: long enough to kind of see this before. You have
- 29:56Speaker 10: a coach that has to win. you have an organization
- 29:58Speaker 10: that still doesn't have a quarterback. So you're kind of
- 30:01Speaker 10: in a spot where, okay, can you win enough games
- 30:04Speaker 10: that you save your job? But if you win enough games,
- 30:07Speaker 10: but not enough to save your job, but also too
- 30:10Speaker 10: many out of an interesting draft slot.
- 30:11Speaker 6: Now they have three first rounders, which.
- 30:13Speaker 10: Gives them kind of that flexibility, hopefully to move and
- 30:16Speaker 10: capitalize on what should be a deeper quarterback class. They're
- 30:19Speaker 10: just in a very weird place, guys. They added a
- 30:21Speaker 10: lot of veterans in the off season. They are a
- 30:22Speaker 10: very young roster from all the picks they've had. They
- 30:25Speaker 10: look to me kind of like the classic case of
- 30:28Speaker 10: a six-win team that can beat up on the basement teams.
- 30:31Speaker 10: And the Jets have been a basement team lately that
- 30:33Speaker 10: usually they lose to those teams. So that's a step forward.
- 30:36Speaker 10: But if you're looking at Aaron Glenn, a step forward
- 30:38Speaker 10: is not good enough. We need to probably take one, two, three,
- 30:41Speaker 10: four steps forward or a giant leap where the Jets,
- 30:44Speaker 10: they're going to be really, really interesting because of all
- 30:46Speaker 10: the assets they've accumulated. The roster is in a better place,
- 30:49Speaker 10: but they still have giant questions at the two most
- 30:52Speaker 10: important things in the NFL, and that's quarterback and the
- 30:54Speaker 10: head coach.
- 30:55Speaker 3: Connor, there's two tough jobs, helping Chris Sims every day
- 30:59Speaker 3: and covering the Jets. In that order. Yeah, I don't
- 31:01Speaker 3: know if I envy you.
- 31:02Speaker 6: Don't watch the show for it, guys. I lose the
- 31:04Speaker 6: local Emmys every single year.
- 31:06Speaker 10: I'm just glad you guys appreciate this.
- 31:09Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:10Speaker 3: Well, join us. Hopefully that will help break your streak.
- 31:14Speaker 3: All right, we look forward to seeing you on Saturday,
- 31:16Speaker 3: College Football Countdown on NBC. Connor, have a great week.
- 31:20Speaker 3: We will talk to you later in the season.
- 31:21Speaker 2: Thanks, guys.
- 31:22Speaker 6: Appreciate you having me.
- 31:24Speaker 5: That was fun.
- 31:24Speaker 3: There's so much college football, Paul.
- 31:26Speaker 4: It is, and there was so much drama last week.
- 31:28Speaker 4: It almost feels like, will this be a drama-free weekend
- 31:30Speaker 4: and just stuff on the field, or will it be
- 31:32Speaker 4: off the field as well?
- 31:33Speaker 3: Well, we know the answer to that. It's college football.
- 31:35Speaker 3: There will always be both drama on and off the field.
- 31:38Speaker 3: All right, coming up next, the Clip Join. Something very
- 31:42Speaker 3: interesting on the DP Show today that we'll break down.
- 31:44Speaker 3: Got to stay for this. Not so fast.
- 31:52Speaker 11: Trent Williams had an unbelievable night considering Miles Garrett was
- 31:57Speaker 11: basically a no-show. How valuable is that if you're Brock
- 32:02Speaker 11: Purdy and you know Trent is going to take care
- 32:05Speaker 11: of that guy and you don't have Aaron Donald to
- 32:09Speaker 11: worry about?
- 32:10Speaker 8: Everything about the offense is created because you're not under
- 32:13Speaker 8: siege and especially with the best.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Players in the league.
- 32:17Speaker 8: So Trent Williams, if you think about it, they're Christian
- 32:21Speaker 8: McCaffrey and Trent Williams showed up and you can say
- 32:25Speaker 8: kind of out of nowhere for the 49ers, two locks
- 32:30Speaker 8: in the hall of fame, just kind of like chose
- 32:33Speaker 8: the 49ers. And it's just changed everything. The two of
- 32:36Speaker 8: them have created incredible opportunity for the 49ers and Trent
- 32:41Speaker 8: Williams is, but he's, we say he's a hall of famer.
- 32:44Speaker 8: He's a hall of famer, hall of famer. Like he's
- 32:46Speaker 8: probably the best. You can say he's the best tackle
- 32:48Speaker 8: ever played.
- 32:50Speaker 4: Back on Not So Fast with Pabst and Perloff. This
- 32:52Speaker 4: is the clip joint. And we went to the pen,
- 32:54Speaker 4: but we brought an ace in from the pen, which
- 32:56Speaker 4: you usually don't do in baseball, I'm told. Dan Patrick
- 32:59Speaker 4: is joining us. Now, I don't want to talk football
- 33:01Speaker 4: with you, and I'm going to almost fan out.
- 33:03Speaker 2: I thought I almost escaped. I was ready to leave
- 33:06Speaker 2: and start my weekend.
- 33:07Speaker 4: We saw you go into the car with a big
- 33:08Speaker 4: plate full of wings and said, not so fast.
- 33:10Speaker 2: I'm so fast.
- 33:12Speaker 4: You've had Steve Young. We've had Steve Young on the
- 33:14Speaker 4: Dan Patrick Show for a couple years now. But I'm curious.
- 33:17Speaker 4: And the reason I'm bringing it in is because I
- 33:18Speaker 4: think it's some of the best radio we have. You
- 33:21Speaker 4: two together, it could go an hour as far as
- 33:23Speaker 4: I'm concerned. And I think a lot of fans agree
- 33:25Speaker 4: with it as well. Did you work with Steve back
- 33:27Speaker 4: in the ESPN days, or is this kind of a
- 33:29Speaker 4: new thing?
- 33:31Speaker 11: I first met him when he was playing, and I
- 33:36Speaker 11: remember meeting him and spending time with him at the
- 33:38Speaker 11: Children's Miracle Network. And my wife and family, we would
- 33:43Speaker 11: spend a week helping Marie Osmond and Steve Young, John
- 33:48Speaker 11: Schneider from the Dukes of Hazzard. So they would raise
- 33:52Speaker 11: money for Children's Miracle Network. And the more I was
- 33:54Speaker 11: around him, I clicked with him. I don't know what
- 33:58Speaker 11: it was, but I think he's the best NFL analyst.
- 34:02Speaker 11: And he's not working, because he used to work at
- 34:04Speaker 11: the mothership, but I find him to be self-deprecating, very smart,
- 34:09Speaker 11: and he's.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Got the resume as well.
- 34:12Speaker 11: And I think when you put all of that together,
- 34:14Speaker 11: it just metastasizes how great he can be as an analyst.
- 34:19Speaker 11: And he's so much fun. Sometimes I forget That were
- 34:23Speaker 11: on radio or TV.
- 34:23Speaker 3: Which is the best.
- 34:24Speaker 2: Yes. But he's just a lot of fun. He's a
- 34:28Speaker 2: good person.
- 34:29Speaker 3: I tell this story about you were standing next to
- 34:32Speaker 3: him in the Pittsburgh, Arizona Super Bowl. I think you
- 34:35Speaker 3: told on air that he was doing like a play-by-play
- 34:38Speaker 3: with you. What was that conversation? Because I've actually told
- 34:41Speaker 3: this story many times, but I want to make sure
- 34:43Speaker 3: I have it right.
- 34:44Speaker 2: Well, I'm going to hand out the trophy.
- 34:46Speaker 3: Okay.
- 34:47Speaker 2: And I think it's going to be Arizona. They just scored.
- 34:51Speaker 2: Larry Fitzgerald scores. I'm on the sidelines.
- 34:53Speaker 11: And I figured, let me start where the Steelers are
- 34:56Speaker 11: starting their two-minute drill. And Steve Young happened to be
- 35:00Speaker 11: there on the sidelines. And he was like, hey, what
- 35:02Speaker 11: are you doing? I said, well, I'm going to hand
- 35:04Speaker 11: out the trophy. He goes, all right, let's watch this drive.
- 35:07Speaker 11: And he was giving me his analysis of Ben Roethlisberger
- 35:13Speaker 11: in real time. And he was saying how incredible Ben
- 35:18Speaker 11: was on that drive. I didn't even talk to him
- 35:21Speaker 11: when he threw the touchdown pass. I knew I had
- 35:23Speaker 11: to get in position to hand out the Super Bowl trophy.
- 35:27Speaker 11: But it's one of the best times, highlights of my career,
- 35:30Speaker 11: watching a Hall of Famer with a Hall of Famer
- 35:33Speaker 11: with the Super Bowl on the line.
- 35:34Speaker 4: You had a private broadcast.
- 35:38Speaker 11: I only wish I could have had him mic'd up
- 35:40Speaker 11: and you could have heard him because he was saying,
- 35:43Speaker 11: this is what I would do.
- 35:44Speaker 2: You know what's open? Boy, oh man, that's a great play.
- 35:48Speaker 11: And it was in real time that he was giving
- 35:50Speaker 11: me one of the great drives in Super Bowl history.
- 35:52Speaker 4: So when you have Steve Young on the show and
- 35:53Speaker 4: he's coming on regularly, your job, a guy like him
- 35:56Speaker 4: is an expert on quarterback play and offense. And he
- 35:59Speaker 4: has more stories than he knows what he has in
- 36:02Speaker 4: his head. What's your role? What's your job?
- 36:05Speaker 2: I don't know where I'm going with him.
- 36:07Speaker 11: He's one of the few that I don't have it
- 36:09Speaker 11: pre-planned that I got it. There are certain things I
- 36:12Speaker 11: want to ask him about. Trent Williams, he said, might
- 36:15Speaker 11: be the best left tackle of all time. the travel
- 36:19Speaker 11: part of this. He didn't understand the Rams logic. So
- 36:22Speaker 11: I get to those things. Then you just kind of go.
- 36:26Speaker 11: But I always tell people being a good interviewer means
- 36:29Speaker 11: being a good listener.
- 36:30Speaker 2: And Steve will.
- 36:31Speaker 11: Always give you something, whether he means to or not,
- 36:35Speaker 11: and then you follow up on that. And that's the
- 36:37Speaker 11: fun part because I think he likes the fact that
- 36:41Speaker 11: they're not.
- 36:41Speaker 2: Your prototypical question.
- 36:42Speaker 4: And he gets to breathe.
- 36:43Speaker 11: Yes. And all these analysts, when they come on, if
- 36:47Speaker 11: you're on the mothership, you might get 15 seconds here,
- 36:50Speaker 11: 20 seconds here.
- 36:51Speaker 2: I'm giving you 15 minutes.
- 36:53Speaker 11: Like Louis Riddick, love having him on because he wants
- 36:57Speaker 11: to talk football. And to be able to have that platform,
- 37:02Speaker 11: I think is welcoming for a lot of these analysts.
- 37:04Speaker 3: Do you have to be a quarterback to analyze certain things,
- 37:07Speaker 3: to analyze a quarterback? You've actually, I've seen you work
- 37:09Speaker 3: with current players and former players. Is it really, does
- 37:12Speaker 3: it start with QBs? As far as being able to analyze,
- 37:17Speaker 3: Steve Young can see the whole game. Do you prefer
- 37:20Speaker 3: former quarterbacks when you're talking about certain things with offense?
- 37:23Speaker 11: Well, I think they're probably interviewed more than anybody else.
- 37:28Speaker 11: I like talking to defensive backs, too, because they see
- 37:31Speaker 11: the field from a different angle. And I think we
- 37:35Speaker 11: don't get that perspective as often. It's the quarterback's perspective.
- 37:39Speaker 11: Sometimes that defensive back even linebacker, when Brian Urlacher would
- 37:44Speaker 11: be on. He gave me a whole different view of
- 37:47Speaker 11: what he would say. Ray Lewis, same thing. I think
- 37:50Speaker 11: when you get that, all you want to do is
- 37:52Speaker 11: say to your audience, we don't want to bore you
- 37:56Speaker 11: with the regular stuff. We've thought about something or give
- 37:59Speaker 11: you something. Even when we had the sleep doctor on,
- 38:02Speaker 11: I didn't know what I was going to get, but
- 38:04Speaker 11: she works for the And she's saying, I don't understand
- 38:07Speaker 11: the logic behind the Rams. Well, you know, that was
- 38:09Speaker 11: before it happened instead of after. And she, you know,
- 38:13Speaker 11: said the Niners will be more acclimated and thought that
- 38:15Speaker 11: was going to be an advantage. And I think that,
- 38:18Speaker 11: you know, that, you know, showed.
- 38:20Speaker 4: Thank you for popping in. Also, thank you. I heard
- 38:22Speaker 4: you saved us a to-go plate of wings.
- 38:24Speaker 3: I did.
- 38:24Speaker 2: We appreciate that. I did.
- 38:25Speaker 4: And I get credit for this booking, Perloff.
- 38:27Speaker 3: All right. It's fine.
- 38:28Speaker 11: By the way, Paulie trying to show some skin here.
- 38:31Speaker 11: I don't know what that means for the ratings here.
- 38:35Speaker 11: But all of a sudden, I got cleavage on the show.
- 38:37Speaker 11: And who knew that was going to happen?
- 38:39Speaker 4: You know, whatever works.
- 38:40Speaker 2: I can't wait to hear what your wife has to
- 38:42Speaker 2: say about that.
- 38:43Speaker 4: Thank you for coming by.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Yep.
- 38:45Speaker 5: Are we on that note?
- 38:46Speaker 3: We got to get back to the cliff joint. All right,
- 38:48Speaker 3: let's go to Mike Evans had a solid 49ers debut,
- 38:51Speaker 3: but he didn't know when the Rams got into town
- 38:53Speaker 3: and he had a great reaction.
- 38:56Speaker 2: When did they get out here? Seriously?
- 38:58Speaker 5: Oh, dang.
- 39:01Speaker 2: I mean, you got to get your body time to adjust.
- 39:03Speaker 7: I mean, obviously whenever the game is scheduled, you got
- 39:06Speaker 7: to be ready to play, but maybe a few days
- 39:09Speaker 7: earlier would have been ideal, but But no matter what,
- 39:13Speaker 7: we don't care if they came a week or two
- 39:14Speaker 7: weeks earlier. We had it on our mind to come
- 39:16Speaker 7: out here and execute, and we did that.
- 39:19Speaker 3: Wait, how is it possible that Mike Evans didn't see
- 39:21Speaker 3: all the headlines about the Rams' travel plans?
- 39:23Speaker 4: See, you're looking at this completely wrong. Mike Evans is
- 39:25Speaker 4: focused on football. That's what I learned. He's not watching SportsCenter.
- 39:28Speaker 4: He's not watching Not So Fast. He would have known
- 39:30Speaker 4: about the travel plan.
- 39:31Speaker 3: Yeah, so yesterday we did picks, and I picked the Rams.
- 39:34Speaker 3: If I had known Mike Evans was going to look
- 39:36Speaker 3: like that, I would have taken the 49ers. He looks
- 39:38Speaker 3: like he is going to be the cheat code for
- 39:40Speaker 3: that offense.
- 39:40Speaker 4: All right, we've got a lot more to get to,
- 39:42Speaker 4: but let's talk a little bit about Heisman Trophy this week.
- 39:44Speaker 4: We've got the Heisman coming up. Long way to go,
- 39:46Speaker 4: but let's get to getting the Heisman always on Not
- 39:49Speaker 4: So Fast.
- 39:50Speaker 3: There it is.
- 39:50Speaker 4: Look at that guy. That is the closest I'll ever
- 39:53Speaker 4: get to the Heisman Award. All right, Perloff, a couple
- 39:56Speaker 4: Heisman games this weekend. Oregon, Oklahoma State, Dante Moore, great
- 40:01Speaker 4: second half statement game for him.
- 40:03Speaker 2: A couple more.
- 40:04Speaker 4: OU, Michigan, at Michigan, John Mateer of Oklahoma.
- 40:08Speaker 3: Showcase game. Showcase game for him. But, I mean, I
- 40:11Speaker 3: know the next game you're going to do, to me,
- 40:13Speaker 3: is the big one.
- 40:13Speaker 4: Well, it's Ohio State, Texas. Everyone's a Heisman candidate.
- 40:16Speaker 3: Is the winner of that game the frontrunner? I think
- 40:19Speaker 3: Menta jumped in the odds, but Arch wins. The narrative
- 40:22Speaker 3: is going to be all about Arch. Ohio State wins.
- 40:25Speaker 3: I guess it's going to be Jeremiah Smith based on
- 40:27Speaker 3: the odds.
- 40:28Speaker 4: It's weird that Jeremiah Smith is up there and Julian
- 40:30Speaker 4: Say and his quarterback is not. That could flip-flop as
- 40:33Speaker 4: the season goes along. CJ Carr has rice this weekend.
- 40:36Speaker 4: I don't know if that's going to help his case.
- 40:38Speaker 5: Well, he's going to get some numbers.
- 40:39Speaker 4: He'll get some numbers, but Malachi Toney last night against FAMU,
- 40:43Speaker 4: while you get numbers, you don't get a lot of
- 40:45Speaker 4: credit for those.
- 40:46Speaker 5: No, but they're going to have a lot more tests
- 40:47Speaker 5: moving forward. I mean, you're right.
- 40:49Speaker 3: You do have to, in those early games, you want
- 40:51Speaker 3: to throw six touchdowns and have no picks, and then
- 40:53Speaker 3: at the end of the year... You have 45 touchdowns.
- 40:55Speaker 3: It's going to be, you know, to me, the big
- 40:57Speaker 3: battle quarterback versus wide receiver. You have Tony and Smith
- 41:00Speaker 3: versus Arch Manning and Dante Moore and all the other guys.
- 41:03Speaker 4: They're sharing votes. Then you look at some other teams
- 41:05Speaker 4: like Ole Miss. Can Chambliss get back in the mix?
- 41:07Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 41:07Speaker 4: Does LSU have a Heisman candidate at this juncture?
- 41:10Speaker 5: They don't.
- 41:10Speaker 3: Well, LSU, gosh, I mean, it could be their quarterback.
- 41:13Speaker 3: Sam Leavitt is very, very good.
- 41:15Speaker 2: All right.
- 41:15Speaker 4: Coming up next, it's time for, oh, a little constructive
- 41:18Speaker 4: criticism and the feel good. Much, much more. Thanks to
- 41:20Speaker 4: Dan Patrick for stopping by.
- 41:22Speaker 3: Stick around.
- 41:22Speaker 4: Not so fast.
- 41:23Speaker 3: All right, we're back on Not So Fast. Perloff and Papps,
- 41:26Speaker 3: NBC Sports Now, Peacock. Paul, there are a lot of
- 41:29Speaker 3: big games this weekend. Know what everyone's going to be watching?
- 41:31Speaker 3: Bill's Texan is the winner of Houston Buffalo, the favorite.
- 41:35Speaker 5: In the AFC.
- 41:36Speaker 4: It feels like amongst the games that could be an
- 41:38Speaker 4: AFC title game preview. To me, it's C.J. Stroud. I
- 41:40Speaker 4: mentioned earlier in Not So Fast.
- 41:42Speaker 3: C.J.
- 41:42Speaker 4: Stroud in that playoff game, he felt like he hurt
- 41:45Speaker 4: his team. You know, you could have an off day,
- 41:47Speaker 4: but you can't be the reason your team loses. And C.J.
- 41:49Speaker 4: Stroud was just, it's like he played that game with
- 41:51Speaker 4: mittens on in the AFC. And I think if he
- 41:54Speaker 4: plays C.J. Stroud two years ago football or even close
- 41:57Speaker 4: to it with that defense, they should be just fine.
- 41:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, they're both good teams, but to say
- 42:01Speaker 3: they're the winner of this is a favorite. To me,
- 42:03Speaker 3: those teams in the West will be heard from. Obviously,
- 42:06Speaker 3: the Chiefs, Chargers, and Broncos. So I like both these teams.
- 42:09Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure they're going to be in the playoffs,
- 42:12Speaker 3: especially with New England maybe falling a little bit. But
- 42:16Speaker 3: once again, until these teams do it in the playoffs,
- 42:18Speaker 3: I don't really care what happens week one.
- 42:20Speaker 4: There's the odds to win the AFC and, you know, Bills, Ravens, Chiefs.
- 42:23Speaker 4: Do you look at that? The Texans are down there.
- 42:26Speaker 4: The Texans are farther down the list than I thought
- 42:29Speaker 4: they were.
- 42:29Speaker 5: Below the Bengals.
- 42:30Speaker 2: Wow.
- 42:31Speaker 4: I wonder if the Texans may flip-flop with the Patriots
- 42:33Speaker 4: as of today.
- 42:34Speaker 3: Well, I'll tell you one thing. It's about the quarterback.
- 42:36Speaker 3: If you look at that list, people just don't trust C.J.
- 42:38Speaker 5: Stroud.
- 42:38Speaker 4: All right, it's time for Monday's lead today. What we'll
- 42:41Speaker 4: be talking about Monday on all the shows, including Not
- 42:43Speaker 4: So Fast, right here after the Dan Patrick Show. on
- 42:46Speaker 4: NBC Sports Now. Monday's lead today, you were first, Perloff.
- 42:48Speaker 3: Okay, I'm going to go off the board. We've been
- 42:50Speaker 3: talking a lot of football, obviously, but my Monday's lead
- 42:53Speaker 3: is tennis, and I'm being optimistic. This is a wishful
- 42:57Speaker 3: Monday's lead. Tonight, we get Francis Diafo versus Ben Shelton.
- 43:01Speaker 3: The winner of that goes on to the finals. We'll
- 43:03Speaker 3: have an American in the finals. An American is going
- 43:06Speaker 3: to win the U.S. Open for the first time since
- 43:08Speaker 3: Andy Roddick on the men's side. And Shelton and Tiafoe
- 43:11Speaker 3: are incredible to root for. Obviously, Ben Shelton's got Trinity
- 43:14Speaker 3: Rodman cheering for him in the sideline. He has star power.
- 43:17Speaker 5: What's that?
- 43:17Speaker 4: He has star power.
- 43:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 43:19Speaker 3: And Foe, as I like to call him, Foe, is
- 43:22Speaker 3: just incredibly entertaining. This would be a huge story.
- 43:25Speaker 5: I know we're going to come off of football, but
- 43:27Speaker 5: an American winning the U.S. Open would be fantastic.
- 43:29Speaker 3: Huge for the sport, and I think everybody would be
- 43:31Speaker 3: really into it.
- 43:32Speaker 4: I love you going against the grain off the board
- 43:34Speaker 4: there with your pick a little bit. I also worry sometimes.
- 43:36Speaker 4: I think the men's title match is 2 p.m. on Sunday.
- 43:40Speaker 1: I know.
- 43:41Speaker 3: It's always buried for years.
- 43:42Speaker 4: That is in the thick of NFL.
- 43:44Speaker 3: I know. And witching hour is coming at the end
- 43:46Speaker 3: of the 1 p.m. Eastern hour.
- 43:47Speaker 4: My advice would be buy more TVs for your house.
- 43:50Speaker 4: All right, my Monday's lead will be the Cowboys defense
- 43:53Speaker 4: roughs up the Giants. If the Cowboys defense does rough
- 43:56Speaker 4: up the Giants, let's say that game is... 28-7. The
- 43:59Speaker 4: Cowboys are always a topic, and if they're really good,
- 44:02Speaker 4: even more so. When they're really bad, much, much more so.
- 44:05Speaker 4: But that defense, which a lot of people like, Caleb
- 44:08Speaker 4: Downs making his debut, the trade, all that goes with it,
- 44:12Speaker 4: if they could pitch a shutout or something akin to
- 44:14Speaker 4: a shutout, They're going to get a lot of run,
- 44:16Speaker 4: and people are going to jump to Cowboys in the
- 44:18Speaker 4: Super Bowl, question mark, which will be way too soon.
- 44:21Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 44:21Speaker 3: People are already there. Yeah, we have to hype this up.
- 44:24Speaker 3: We're worried that no one's going to watch it on NBC.
- 44:26Speaker 4: Yeah, no worries there, NBC Sunday night. All right, let's
- 44:30Speaker 4: get to a little constructive criticism. Week two of Not
- 44:32Speaker 4: So Fast, our best week, I think, so far. Constructive criticism.
- 44:36Speaker 4: Some people are saying, like Dan Patrick, my shirt, I
- 44:38Speaker 4: missed a button. We'll get to that. From Dave Shoemaker, Pauly,
- 44:42Speaker 4: it's a must and it has to be metal trowel.
- 44:45Speaker 4: trough like old stadiums. Now, that goes back to yesterday.
- 44:48Speaker 4: We were saying a buddy of mine in Chicago is
- 44:51Speaker 4: building a man cave, and he's going to build a
- 44:53Speaker 4: urinal in his bathroom, and a lot of people on
- 44:55Speaker 4: Twitter liked it, so Yeah, it's like the metal trough,
- 44:58Speaker 4: that's at the.
- 44:59Speaker 3: Well, no, I think he's saying take it one step
- 45:01Speaker 3: further and do the metal trough. I got to tell you,
- 45:03Speaker 3: the ice in the metal trough at Wrigley Field when
- 45:05Speaker 3: I first saw it, I'd probably never been more gross
- 45:08Speaker 3: out at a sporting event.
- 45:09Speaker 5: I am not pro trough.
- 45:11Speaker 4: All right, let's get one more, and this is all
- 45:13Speaker 4: urinal related. We really hit a string here. Bad call,
- 45:17Speaker 4: the stank would be overpowering. Well, I mean, not if
- 45:20Speaker 4: you get one of those nice urinal cakes and a
- 45:22Speaker 4: nice flow of water to keep it clean.
- 45:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I think we need– can we get that sleep
- 45:26Speaker 3: scientist from the DP show on to talk about the
- 45:28Speaker 3: odor science of this?
- 45:30Speaker 5: Yeah, is urinal actually sanitary? I don't know, but I
- 45:33Speaker 5: still want one.
- 45:33Speaker 4: See, we go in the bathrooms and we leave. When
- 45:35Speaker 4: you have one in your house, you've got to take
- 45:36Speaker 4: a little bit better care of it. All right, big
- 45:38Speaker 4: football weekend coming up, but let's stick with what happened
- 45:40Speaker 4: last night. And it's time for the feel good. I'm
- 45:43Speaker 4: not so fast. Oh, I'm sorry. Check that. We're ahead.
- 45:47Speaker 4: Keep it friendly time, Perloff. Here we go. These are
- 45:50Speaker 4: our little bets for the weekend. Where do we start?
- 45:52Speaker 4: Let's start college football. I'm going to start Ohio State
- 45:55Speaker 4: versus Texas. Texas giving a point and a half.
- 45:58Speaker 3: Who would you like? I was torn on this game,
- 46:00Speaker 3: and then I heard Charles Davis on the Dan Patrick
- 46:02Speaker 3: Show today point out that Ohio State's run like a
- 46:04Speaker 3: pro team. I actually have been trying to convince myself
- 46:08Speaker 3: into Texas. I see Ohio State walking away with a
- 46:10Speaker 3: close win.
- 46:10Speaker 4: So we'll bet straight up. I'm taking Texas. You take
- 46:13Speaker 4: Ohio State. I think this is, if not now, never possible.
- 46:16Speaker 4: For Texas, I think it's a must-win-ish because otherwise you're
- 46:20Speaker 4: going uphill with the Heisman race.
- 46:21Speaker 3: And the playoffs. Well, they could get back into the playoff.
- 46:23Speaker 3: I mean, this is one game, but you're right. This
- 46:26Speaker 3: feels really big for Sark and Texas.
- 46:28Speaker 4: This game is saucy and for all the wrong reasons.
- 46:30Speaker 4: You can't lose to a basketball school when you're a
- 46:32Speaker 4: football school. That's one of the rules. Rule number 76
- 46:35Speaker 4: is play like a champion. Bama giving 10 to Kentucky. Now,
- 46:39Speaker 4: Alabama football last year, good regular season. Not good in
- 46:43Speaker 4: the playoffs. They cannot afford this loss where you're at here.
- 46:45Speaker 3: Wait, which one's the basketball school now? Because I've got
- 46:48Speaker 3: to be honest, Alabama is a little better. And Kellen DeBoer, sorry,
- 46:51Speaker 3: he's no Nick Saban. They might be more of the
- 46:53Speaker 3: basketball school.
- 46:54Speaker 4: You could say whatever you want to an Alabama football fan,
- 46:56Speaker 4: but if you tell them they're a basketball school, they
- 46:58Speaker 4: may duke's up.
- 46:59Speaker 3: In Kentucky, I think Kentucky is going to be salty.
- 47:02Speaker 3: Keep this close. I love Will Stein, their new head coach.
- 47:06Speaker 3: I think they cover and even threaten to win. I
- 47:08Speaker 3: don't know about the young quarterback at Alabama. It hasn't
- 47:10Speaker 3: been tested.
- 47:11Speaker 4: So you're taking Kentucky to cover not to win?
- 47:13Speaker 5: Yeah, cover not to win. I want to take the win.
- 47:15Speaker 5: I'm close, Paul. I wouldn't be shocked beyond shocked.
- 47:18Speaker 4: I will take Alabama given the 10. I don't think
- 47:19Speaker 4: it's going to be much more than that. I wish
- 47:21Speaker 4: it was 9.5, but I will take that. Let's get
- 47:23Speaker 4: to NFL, and this one was the one you loved
- 47:25Speaker 4: this weekend. Bills giving a point and a half to
- 47:28Speaker 4: the Texans. Could be low scoring. I don't have the over-under,
- 47:30Speaker 4: but it could be low scoring. Where do you want
- 47:32Speaker 4: this one?
- 47:32Speaker 3: I actually think the Bills come out a team on
- 47:34Speaker 3: a mission today because a lot of people have a
- 47:36Speaker 3: lot of questions about them.
- 47:38Speaker 5: They've got Joe Bradian as their new head coach.
- 47:39Speaker 3: I think Josh Allen is the one quarterback who can
- 47:42Speaker 3: maybe run through Will Anderson. So I think it's going
- 47:45Speaker 3: to be a great classic opening week game, but I
- 47:48Speaker 3: think Josh Allen wins the game in the final minute.
- 47:50Speaker 4: And this is the biggest test for their defense because
- 47:51Speaker 4: this is, like you said, the one quarterback who doesn't
- 47:53Speaker 4: care about the pressure because he can run through it.
- 47:55Speaker 4: All right, real quick, time for the feel good. What
- 47:58Speaker 4: happened in sports that makes you feel good? This one
- 48:00Speaker 4: for us. Here we go. Here's the feel good. We're
- 48:03Speaker 4: going back to Melbourne, of course. Look at this crew.
- 48:09Speaker 4: They're singing along to Sweet Caroline. Tarps are coming off.
- 48:11Speaker 4: Maybe some shouldn't.
- 48:13Speaker 5: Oh, boy.
- 48:14Speaker 1: Hello.
- 48:15Speaker 4: Mix in a salad and maybe lift a little. How
- 48:17Speaker 4: about a back raiser?
- 48:19Speaker 3: I mean, you have to admit, international fans get into it.
- 48:22Speaker 3: They always bring their age.
- 48:24Speaker 4: And this game is 10.30 a.m. That means they start
- 48:26Speaker 4: a tailgating, what, the night before?
- 48:27Speaker 5: Yeah. There's a Dolphins jersey.
- 48:29Speaker 3: The eclectic jerseys, they got to send it to one
- 48:33Speaker 3: of these games just to keep track of all the
- 48:35Speaker 3: different team jerseys.
- 48:35Speaker 4: We absolutely should.
- 48:36Speaker 3: We love that stuff.
- 48:37Speaker 4: That's it for us on Not So Fast Week 2.
- 48:39Speaker 4: Thanks for everybody who works on the show to make
- 48:41Speaker 4: it possible. Stick around. Monday, Dan Patrick Show. Wrap up
- 48:44Speaker 4: the NFL weekend every morning, 9 a.m.
- 48:46Speaker 2: Eastern.
- 48:47Speaker 4: That's it for us. Not so fast.
