- 0:00Welcome to Pick Up and Deliver, the podcast where I pick up my audio recorder as I
- 0:06step out for a walk and deliver an episode to you while I stroll around.
- 0:10I'm Brendan Riley.
- 0:15Well, good afternoon listeners.
- 0:22It's a lovely day here in suburban Chicago.
- 0:25The sun is out.
- 0:26The birds are chirping.
- 0:27I'm taking a walk and run some errands.
- 0:29I'm going to go to the hardware store.
- 0:30I'm going to swing by the board game store to see what new stuff they have and I'm going
- 0:34to head over to the library.
- 0:37It's going to be a great afternoon.
- 0:40You know it.
- 0:41Booya!
- 0:42Somebody just came the wrong way out of the parking lot at the nursing home.
- 0:45It drives me crazy when they do that.
- 0:47You're not supposed to go that way.
- 0:48Here we go.
- 0:49Well, it is June 2nd.
- 0:51That means it's the beginning of the month, which means it's the end of another month,
- 0:55which means it's time for top of the stack.
- 0:58[airhorn noises]
- 0:59"Top of the stack" is a monthly segment I do as ideally the first episode to come out
- 1:04in each calendar month.
- 1:05In which I talk about the last month's game plays, I give you some stats.
- 1:09Talk about my goals for the next month and we enjoy our time together.
- 1:12So that's what we're doing today.
- 1:14Top of the stack, maybe.
- 1:15Alright, so May 2025, final monthly play stats.
- 1:22Starting off strong.
- 1:23We had 65 plays of 45 different games.
- 1:26My running total for the year is 352 plays of 165 games.
- 1:31So I'm well on my way to a robust and delightful year.
- 1:34As you know, I'm always trying to reduce my shelf of opportunity.
- 1:37Well this month I totally screwed that up.
- 1:39At the beginning of the month I had 62 games on my shelf of opportunity and at the end of
- 1:44the month I had 77.
- 1:45That's right, I increased it by 15, but that's because I got a whole bunch of new games
- 1:50in a math trade.
- 1:52So I have a whole bunch of new games to try and I did that without buying a bunch of new
- 1:56games, which was nice.
- 1:58So my collection size, my goal is to reduce it and I did make some progress there.
- 2:04I started the year, I started the month with 620 games and I ended the month with 614.
- 2:10So even though I brought 20 new games into my collection or so, I got rid of I think 29
- 2:16and I guess not quite 29.
- 2:18But I got rid of a bunch and I brought fewer of them in.
- 2:21So my collection size is going down.
- 2:24I'll talk about that a little bit more at the end.
- 2:26My most played game this month was Free Radicals, which I played three times and my most played
- 2:31online game was 7 Wonders.
- 2:33Actually when I, the online one is in table and/or online.
- 2:37So if I played a mix it can count toward that.
- 2:407 Wonders I played once on the table and twice online.
- 2:43So three times.
- 2:44My top of the stack is the set of games that I'm hoping to play that month.
- 2:50This month I picked out three four games to play.
- 2:53If I play three of them it counts as a success.
- 2:55The four games I picked out were Sorcerer City, Badass Zombie Killers, Fallen Angel, and
- 3:01Pulsar 2849.
- 3:02Alas the only one of those that I got played is the one I had played before.
- 3:06Pulsar 2849 none of the other ones got played.
- 3:09I was trying to get Sorcerer City played pretty hard.
- 3:13I learned the rules, got it already and then I didn't get it played.
- 3:16Oops.
- 3:17The other two honestly I didn't even get a chance to try.
- 3:20I just never came up.
- 3:22So we'll see a lot of those coming back another time.
- 3:25But for now that was one out of three.
- 3:28Not great.
- 3:29Although now they look at that's my success level in both May and April as well.
- 3:33February I got three out of three, March I got four out of three.
- 3:36But it's been not great on the success level since then.
- 3:40I did however get to try a whole lot of new games this month.
- 3:43I'm just gonna blast through the list here.
- 3:46Coming into the month I had tried 36 new games.
- 3:49Going out I tried 50.
- 3:52So here are the games I tried this month.
- 3:54Free radicals, moon colony blood bath, ethnos, red rising, 51st state master set,
- 4:01Whitehall mystery, time bomb evolution, Madame Madora's House of Curiosity's, one night
- 4:06ultimate alien, nefarious Lord of the Rings, fate of the Fellowship, the great Zimbabwe,
- 4:11Trick Draw and Savor Nackie Forest as a lot of games.
- 4:15It was great.
- 4:17I also tried out one expansion this month.
- 4:20This was the innovation cities of Destiny expansion.
- 4:23Cities of Destiny is one of many expansions of innovation that I got when I got the ultimate
- 4:30innovation ultimate box set.
- 4:32So I have all of the different sets of innovation.
- 4:35I tried cities of destiny over on Yukata.
- 4:38Played with Gabriel.
- 4:40Hey Gabriel.
- 4:41Thanks for joining me for exploring innovation.
- 4:43I've been also dusting off some games.
- 4:45I dusted off Pulsar 2849.
- 4:48It had been one year, 11 months, and 15 days since I played that.
- 4:51I dusted off Cockroach Poker, two years, eight months, 29 days for that one.
- 4:56Crossfire, seven years, four months, 18 days for that one, seven years.
- 5:01Whew.
- 5:02A study in Emerald, two years, seven months, 19 days, Royals, five years, 11 months,
- 5:07stick stack, two years, one month, 13 days, and King Domino, six years, two months, and five
- 5:13days.
- 5:14Lots of games dusted off, and most of those actually pretty enjoyable.
- 5:17It was 33 games altogether.
- 5:20As you know, I'm going through my top 50 lists and I'm trying to pick out, trying to get
- 5:25one or two, ideally two games from my top 50 played on the table each month.
- 5:31Online plays do not count for trying out my top 50 again.
- 5:34They got to be on the table.
- 5:36And I did get three played this month.
- 5:38Pulsar 2849.
- 5:39A study in Emerald, we actually played twice, and 7 wonders.
- 5:43Pulsar 2849 was great, had a really fun time with that.
- 5:46Study in Emerald decidedly mixed.
- 5:48The first play went really quick, which was funny.
- 5:51The second play not as quick, but wasn't as fun.
- 5:54Just the balance of the characters came out, and one of the cards that came out let everybody
- 5:57know, publicly, who was on which team, and it just ended up not being super fun.
- 6:02So I think there's a level of experience there.
- 6:05I feel like the three of us that ended up on one team in that second game should have
- 6:10been fighting harder against each other to be in the lead.
- 6:15But we didn't do that well enough, so we just let one player kind of run away with the
- 6:18win, which was lame.
- 6:217 wonders was fun as always.
- 6:22I'm up to 17 out of my 50 games played on the table, which is pretty good.
- 6:28I really want to get to like 30, 35 of them this year because the more that I play, the
- 6:33other ones are just really hard to get to the table.
- 6:35So making good progress on that.
- 6:39Next up is my 10 for 10.
- 6:41As you know, a normal 10 for 10 is where you pick 10 games and try to play the meach 10 times
- 6:45in a year.
- 6:46What I would have done instead this year is I picked 10 categories, and I'm trying to play
- 6:5010 games that fit those categories in the year, or 10 game plays.
- 6:54So I can reuse a game if it fits a category more than once.
- 6:59So I only advanced one category this month, which doesn't, that's not great.
- 7:04That was the game's by color of the box.
- 7:08So I have 10 colors of the box picked out.
- 7:11We have Roy G Biv and then brown, black and white.
- 7:15And I did play a game where the box cover was primarily white.
- 7:18This was bomb busters.
- 7:19There's a game we've played a lot actually, but this is the first time I thought to apply
- 7:22it in this category.
- 7:24So I'm up to seven of the colors having been played thus far.
- 7:28We're at 44 out of 100 complete.
- 7:30So making good progress there, but I really am going to have to buckle down if I want to
- 7:34finish it by the end of the year.
- 7:36My painting challenge is pathetic and sad I haven't done any painting.
- 7:39I would like to, I keep meaning to just haven't gotten back to it.
- 7:43So the top priority of painting is to paint up frost haven minis.
- 7:46I think if I get rolling again, maybe I'll just paint all the frost haven minis and then
- 7:51I can get started on some other things.
- 7:53I really want to do that.
- 7:54I just haven't made the time.
- 7:56My shelf of opportunity has been very productive.
- 7:59As I mentioned before, it's beginning of the month.
- 8:01There were six two games.
- 8:03Now there are 77 on played, but you heard all of the new, all of the games I played.
- 8:08I also had several games that I dusted off that were on my shelf of opportunity that were
- 8:13removed.
- 8:14So like King Domino and Royals and those two for example are games that I had played before.
- 8:19So they're not new games, but they were added to my shelf of opportunity because of the
- 8:25acquiring a copy.
- 8:26That is one of my rules.
- 8:27If I buy a copy of a game, it goes on my shelf of opportunity until I play it.
- 8:31So I have made progress on that even though we did add a whole bunch of games to that list.
- 8:36My expansion list, I only added one game to the expansion list this month and that was
- 8:42Fresco.
- 8:43I got, Fresco is one of the games I got in the trade.
- 8:45And for some reason, the module number seven, the scrolls, was in the box.
- 8:52So I have one expansion module number seven for some reason.
- 8:56But that's added to expansions I have to play.
- 9:00My collection size, I wanted to give you share the update on my collection size and ended
- 9:04up being so funny, just yoyo up and down experience.
- 9:09My collection started at 623 games this month.
- 9:12Then I got rid of 27 games in the math trade, which was pretty cool.
- 9:17Actually had a whole bunch more games that I've offered.
- 9:19So I've got this big stack of games I've been meeting to sell.
- 9:21Actually, it might be something I could do this afternoon is post those up on Facebook
- 9:26Marketplace, see what I can get for them.
- 9:28And then I have 18 games that I got in the math trade.
- 9:32I actually got more than that.
- 9:34But several games I got, I got with the intent of donating them to the college board game
- 9:38club, which adonates the wrong word because they're still mine.
- 9:41I haven't actually yielded ownership of them, but I think of them as part of the board game
- 9:48club.
- 9:49I don't have them in my collection.
- 9:50I have them listed in the board game club collection.
- 9:53And so that's what we're doing there.
- 9:56I had several there, but I did end up with 18 new games added to my collection from that
- 10:01math trade.
- 10:02And then I purchased free radicals with points from my Amazon card.
- 10:06I got red rising.
- 10:07I actually had that game that I got a while back and I just had never marked it added to
- 10:12my collection.
- 10:13So I marked it added to my collection.
- 10:15And then the board game club, my college board game club was doing a giveaway, like a little
- 10:21drawing for some games.
- 10:23And so I put adorable panda ring and boss monster into that giveaway.
- 10:28I actually put in several games, but some of the other games had already been marked as
- 10:33removed from my collection, even though we still had them in the house.
- 10:36That was bad collection management on my part.
- 10:39So I didn't give away four or five games actually, but only three, only two of them were still
- 10:43marked in the collection.
- 10:44So those two.
- 10:46But then I went on a trip for school to a conference.
- 10:52As I often do then, I found a game shop to visit and I bought myself two small games, Savin
- 10:56Aki Forest and Time Bomb Evolution.
- 10:59So those are in my collection now.
- 11:00They're both cute little games.
- 11:03I've talked about them in an episode I've recorded already, which will come out two episodes
- 11:09from now.
- 11:10So one of the games I get, one of the games I got in trade was Crossfire, which is a low
- 11:15level social deduction game.
- 11:18We had a good time with it at the board game club, but I quickly figured out, I don't
- 11:21need this game in my collection at home.
- 11:23So it has been added to the board game club collection.
- 11:26So I removed it from mine.
- 11:28And then finally I got Madame Madora's House of Curiosity's, which is a one play puzzle
- 11:34game.
- 11:35So I gave Madame Madora's House of Curiosity's away after we finished it.
- 11:41And that marked one more game away, which got me down to 614.
- 11:46So overall, a productive effort in terms of the collection.
- 11:51And hopefully I'll continue that trend of reducing the collection size because that's
- 11:55one of the goals.
- 11:56Alright finally, what am I going to play next month?
- 11:59I picked out a couple two older games to play.
- 12:03I have Martin Wallace's Arrow Plains, which is a 2012 economic game.
- 12:07I think it looks pretty good.
- 12:09I bet I could get people to toggle the play if I set it up.
- 12:11So I'm hoping I can do that.
- 12:13I picked out in the year of the Dragon, which is a stuff and fell game.
- 12:18One of my friends at toggle enjoys it and has it.
- 12:21So I'm hoping that another night I can play that with him, if not maybe at home sometime.
- 12:26I have Xenoshift Dreadmire.
- 12:28This is a cooperative game, which I think my son kind of looked intrigued at when I was
- 12:35showing him the games I got in my trade.
- 12:36So I'm hoping I'll be able to play with him.
- 12:38And finally I picked out Ghost Stories, which I worse that can play by myself.
- 12:42But I know my son enjoys it, so I'm hoping I can play with him as well.
- 12:45I'd love to play a couple rounds of it so we can get it back in memory, maybe win one.
- 12:50And then try out the White Moon expansion, which I've had for a long time, is on my Expand
- 12:56Your Shelf list, but I haven't gotten a chance to play.
- 13:00So the White Moon expansion part is not actually part of my top of the stack goals, but I'm throwing
- 13:07my hat over the wall and saying, "I am hoping to do that."
- 13:10So that is my plan.
- 13:13Aeroplanes in the air of the dragon, Xenoshift Dreadmire and Ghost Stories.
- 13:17Well there are listeners.
- 13:18I'd love to hear what you've been playing.
- 13:19Head over to BoardGameGeek, Guild 3269, and share your game plays over there.
- 13:25Our friends and mine will join us in the podcast comment section and tell us what they've
- 13:30been playing as well.
- 13:33If you'd like to send me a message, you can do so.
- 13:35Wombat 929 on BoardGameGeek is my username.
- 13:38I'd love to hear from you there.
- 13:40You can also send me an email, breadin@radoboxgames.com.
- 13:43I will probably hear it at some point.
- 13:46Well that's about it for me today.
- 13:47I want to say thank you for joining me on my walk and I hope your next walk is a pleasant
- 13:51good mind loss.
- 13:52Bye bye.
- 13:53I've got an opportunity.
- 14:14No, I'll get hold on.
- 14:18I'm going to the train.
- 14:26But the acoustics in here are not good.
- 14:27I don't walk this way when I'm recording.
- 14:29So I don't know what I was thinking, but it sounds bad.
- 14:33So I'm holding off.
- 14:34This is a post credits blooper message I guess.
- 14:41[MUSIC]
