- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode? We're doing something practical today. Luna: Oh, finally! I've been wanting to learn how to order food in German. Let's go! Lucas: Exactly what we're doing. So imagine you're at a restaurant in Berlin. You sit down, the waiter comes over. What do you say? Luna: Uhh... 'Ich möchte bestellen'? I think I've heard that before. Lucas: Yes! 'Ich möchte bestellen' — that means 'I would like to order.' Perfect. Say it once more? Luna: Ich möchte bestellen. Lucas: Great. Now let's say the waiter asks what you'd like. You want a coffee. 'Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee.' That's 'I'd like a coffee.' Luna: Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. Hmm, that's a bit longer. Lucas: Break it down: 'Ich hätte gern' — 'I would like' — and 'einen Kaffee' — 'a coffee.' Try it slowly. Luna: Ich hätte gern... einen Kaffee. Yeah, got it. Lucas: Awesome. Now after you eat, you want the bill. What do you say? 'Die Rechnung, bitte.' Luna: Die Rechnung, bitte. That sounds easy. 'The bill, please.' Lucas: Yep. And if you want to say 'keep the change,' you say 'Stimmt so.' It's common in Germany. Luna: Stimmt so. So that's like 'that's fine, keep it.' Lucas: Exactly. Now let's put it all together. You come in, sit, and say...? Luna: Ich möchte bestellen. Lucas: Waiter comes. You say... Luna: Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. Lucas: After the meal, you want to leave. You say... Luna: Die Rechnung, bitte. Lucas: And if you're paying cash and don't want change... Luna: Stimmt so. Oh, and 'Das war lecker' — that was delicious! For after the meal. Lucas: Right! 'Das war lecker.' You can say that to the waiter. Let's hear it. Luna: Das war lecker. Yeah, I can imagine saying that after a good meal. Lucas: Perfect. So today we have five phrases: Ich möchte bestellen, Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee, Die Rechnung bitte, Stimmt so, and Das war lecker. Let's do a quick review. Luna: Sure! Ich möchte bestellen. Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. Die Rechnung, bitte. Stimmt so. Das war lecker. Lucas: You nailed it. Now imagine you're at a café with a friend. You say 'Ich möchte bestellen.' Then you order two coffees. Luna: Ich hätte gern zwei Kaffee? Oh wait, it's 'zwei Kaffee' or 'zwei Kaffees'? Lucas: Good question. In German, it's 'zwei Kaffee' — no s. So 'Ich hätte gern zwei Kaffee.' Luna: Ich hätte gern zwei Kaffee. Got it. Lucas: And after you drink, you say 'Das war lecker' to your friend. Then 'Die Rechnung, bitte' to the waiter. And pay with 'Stimmt so.' Luna: That's a whole meal! I feel so prepared now. Lucas: That's the goal. Before we go, let's hear all five one more time, nice and clear. Luna: Ich möchte bestellen. Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. Die Rechnung, bitte. Stimmt so. Das war lecker. Lucas: Perfect. Practice those, and next time you're at a German restaurant, you'll be ready. Thanks for joining us on Fexingo's Learn German! Luna: Tschüss, bis zum nächsten Mal!
