Speaker 1: Welcome to Dirty Rush, The Truth about Sorority Life with
• 0:04
Speaker 1: your hosts me Gia, Judaice, Daisy.
• 0:07
Speaker 2: Kent, and Jennifer Kessler. Welcome back to another episode of
• 0:14
Speaker 2: Dirty Rush. I'm Shelby and today is another producer hosted episode.
• 0:19
Speaker 2: Today we are talking all about joining a sorority for
• 0:22
Speaker 2: the right reasons or so we think, let's jump right in.
• 0:27
Speaker 2: So today we're actually going to be talking about a
• 0:29
Speaker 2: post we saw on Instagram that's by at Sorority Standards.
• 0:34
Speaker 2: They posted the top ten reasons women joined sororities. The
• 0:39
Speaker 2: source is from the National Panhalenic Conference Sorority Belonging, Diversity,
• 0:45
Speaker 2: well Being and Joining Survey twenty twenty two to twenty
• 0:48
Speaker 2: twenty three and a qualitative study of why women join
• 0:52
Speaker 2: panalytic organizations. So we're going to discuss if we all
• 0:56
Speaker 2: agree or if we disagree with these ten reasons why
• 1:00
Speaker 2: women joined swarties. Before we jump in, can you guys
• 1:04
Speaker 2: like tell me a little bit about why you joined
• 1:07
Speaker 2: a sorority without knowing the ten reasons yet when you
• 1:10
Speaker 2: went into a sorority, maybe give me like the top
• 1:12
Speaker 2: three two to three reasons why it was like important
• 1:14
Speaker 2: for you to join Creek life.
• 1:17
Speaker 1: For me, this might be like I don't know a
• 1:20
Speaker 1: nicheuer thing for some groups. But so I rushed my
• 1:24
Speaker 1: sophomore year, and I'm an athlete at my school. Anyone
• 1:28
Speaker 1: who's an athlete just knows that athlete culture is just
• 1:31
Speaker 1: so tight knit and it's very hard to get out of.
• 1:35
Speaker 1: And especially going to like a super large school too,
• 1:37
Speaker 1: it kind of just sometimes feel like a school within
• 1:39
Speaker 1: a school. So for me, and like I come from
• 1:42
Speaker 1: a very very small team. We only have about like
• 1:45
Speaker 1: twenty girls and guys. So like I kind of had
• 1:48
Speaker 1: a huge reflection sophomore year, like going into my sophomore
• 1:52
Speaker 1: year that like I just I needed to like meet
• 1:54
Speaker 1: more people. I needed to branch out more, Like I
• 1:56
Speaker 1: needed to have kind of a group of friends who
• 2:00
Speaker 1: so kind of gave me like something different compared to
• 2:03
Speaker 1: just like athlete culture. And I felt like kind of
• 2:06
Speaker 1: rush was like the easiest thing to kind of like
• 2:09
Speaker 1: jump into, especially if you go to like a super
• 2:11
Speaker 1: large public school, Like it's hard meeting friends just in
• 2:14
Speaker 1: like classes or I don't know, just walking around. So
• 2:17
Speaker 1: like I felt like rush was definitely like the best
• 2:19
Speaker 1: way to see, like, let's see if I can fit
• 2:21
Speaker 1: in anywhere and like kind of going through it. Like
• 2:25
Speaker 1: I think the one thing that like really helped me decide,
• 2:28
Speaker 1: especially like choosing a house, was just like who can
• 2:30
Speaker 1: I really see myself like being friends with outside of
• 2:34
Speaker 1: just like a surface level can like like relationships of
• 2:38
Speaker 1: like who are these like who are going to be
• 2:39
Speaker 1: the people who like I'm still friends with after college,
• 2:41
Speaker 1: Who are gonna be the people that I want to
• 2:43
Speaker 1: like hang out with mornings and nights, et cetera, and
• 2:47
Speaker 1: also like have fun like living in a house too,
• 2:49
Speaker 1: and like see if that's something that like I'd ever
• 2:52
Speaker 1: really want to experience as well. So kind of just
• 2:55
Speaker 1: like it's like more of a branching out into a
• 2:57
Speaker 1: different community in a different space when you go to
• 2:59
  Speaker 1: like a huge.
• 3:00
Speaker 3: I completely agree with everything you said, and for me,
• 3:03
Speaker 3: one of the biggest reasons why I joined because SECU
• 3:07
Speaker 3: is just such a big school and coming as a freshman,
• 3:10
Speaker 3: I feel like it's always so so overwhelming, and like
• 3:12
Speaker 3: I knew I wanted to make it feel smaller by
• 3:15
Speaker 3: kind of finding a community where like people genuinely like
• 3:18
Speaker 3: knew me, cared about me, and like having those long
• 3:20
Speaker 3: lasting friendships like you said, as well as just like
• 3:23
Speaker 3: having that connection like outside of school, like going to
• 3:25
Speaker 3: classes every day. And I felt like I also now
• 3:29
Speaker 3: like after joining a stority, I felt like I could
• 3:30
Speaker 3: walk across campus and like recognize so many familiar faces
• 3:34
Speaker 3: instead of just being like any other student.
• 3:36
Speaker 4: So I really like that.
• 3:38
Speaker 3: I also felt like being in a stority like would
• 3:40
Speaker 3: push me out of my comfort zone and like also
• 3:42
Speaker 3: like forced me to go out to like all the
• 3:43
Speaker 3: pre parties in exchanges and there's always something to look
• 3:46
Speaker 3: forward to each week and like our themed parties and
• 3:48
Speaker 3: all that stuff. And then also just kind of like
• 3:51
Speaker 3: be inspired by other people. I feel like a lot
• 3:53
Speaker 3: of my friends later on, like throughout college took on
• 3:57
Speaker 3: a minor and I was like maybe I will. And
• 3:59
Speaker 3: then also like join like kind of helped me like
• 4:01
Speaker 3: expand and want to go abroad. So I feel like
• 4:03
Speaker 3: starting off, like just joining it leads you to so
• 4:06
Speaker 3: many different experiences and like there's so many different people
• 4:09
Speaker 3: like that want to do different things, and it kind
• 4:11
Speaker 3: of inspires you to kind of step by your comfort
• 4:14
  Speaker 3: zone totally.
• 4:15
Speaker 2: I feel like I was going to school in the
• 4:18
Speaker 2: South from California, and I was like really excited for
• 4:22
Speaker 2: like that whole recruitment process that like I had heard
• 4:25
Speaker 2: was such a big deal, so I just wanted to
• 4:28
Speaker 2: be a part of the process. I always felt like
• 4:30
  Speaker 2: I was a social butterfly, so I like wasn't like
• 4:33
Speaker 2: really fearful of the process, but I didn't really know
• 4:37
Speaker 2: what to expect because my mom wasn't in a swarty.
• 4:39
Speaker 2: But I think, just like like everyone always says, making friends,
• 4:43
Speaker 2: being involved in something, I feel like in college, a
• 4:46
Speaker 2: swarty gives you a big sense of purpose because sometimes
• 4:48
Speaker 2: with like school and like going out and partying like
• 4:51
Speaker 2: kind of can't feel like a cycle and it feels
• 4:54
Speaker 2: like every day is kind of the same at some point,
• 4:56
Speaker 2: and I feel like a swarty like especially having the
• 4:58
Speaker 2: opportunity to like get involved with whatever like that is
• 5:01
Speaker 2: like you can literally be running the Instagram if you're
• 5:03
Speaker 2: into that, or you could be the president. Like there's
• 5:05
Speaker 2: so many different like ranges of things to be involved in,
• 5:08
Speaker 2: like lead a position and people would like literally just
• 5:09
Speaker 2: get birthday gifts for everyone, Like there's so many positions
• 5:12
Speaker 2: you could do anything. And I feel like having that
• 5:14
Speaker 2: sense of purpose outside of like school and just like
• 5:17
Speaker 2: partying is like so important and those would probably be mine,
• 5:23
Speaker 2: I think yeah, and just making friends I think, oh,
• 5:27
Speaker 2: also another big one at the sorties, Like I loved
• 5:29
Speaker 2: having upperclassmen friends like to look up to, and like
• 5:33
Speaker 2: I made so many older friends, like all me and
• 5:35
Speaker 2: my friends and my PCs bigs were all very close
• 5:37
Speaker 2: to They'd invite us to do so much stuff, and
• 5:39
Speaker 2: like having that relationship with older girls, and like for
• 5:42
Speaker 2: me older sisters was like huge when I was a freshman,
• 5:45
Speaker 2: because I feel like I really needed that guidance at
• 5:47
Speaker 2: like a new school, being so far away from home.
• 5:49
Speaker 2: It was like so important to me. So I feel
• 5:51
Speaker 2: like all those like older sisters and the sorority family
• 5:54
Speaker 2: was like a really big reason I wanted to join.
• 5:57
  Speaker 5: I think for me, I'm I was in a dual
• 5:59
Speaker 5: degree program, so I spent my first two years of
• 6:01
Speaker 5: college abroad, and I am from California. So when I
• 6:05
Speaker 5: was able to come back to California, I knew I
• 6:07
Speaker 5: wanted to have that more traditional, like true American college experience.
• 6:11
Speaker 4: And my sister was in a sorority and that was.
• 6:13
Speaker 5: A huge pivotal part of her four year experience, and
• 6:16
Speaker 5: so I kind of always had even when I was abroad.
• 6:18
Speaker 5: But when I got back, I wanted to really like
• 6:21
Speaker 5: take full advantage and just try it. And so I
• 6:24
Speaker 5: think for me, it was really about being able to
• 6:27
Speaker 5: like mold my college experience, to have two completely different
• 6:32
Speaker 5: like two years that were one way and two years
• 6:34
Speaker 5: that were another. And I wanted to like allow myself
• 6:38
Speaker 5: just to try it, just to see if it would
• 6:39
Speaker 5: be something that I liked. And I had no hesitations
• 6:42
Speaker 5: doing it even as a junior, and I just felt
• 6:46
Speaker 5: really like supported throughout the entire experience, and I knew
• 6:49
Speaker 5: like basically on day one that it was something that
• 6:51
Speaker 5: I was going to really enjoy. And just meeting everyone
• 6:55
Speaker 5: kind of similar to what everyone has said, just the
• 6:57
Speaker 5: opportunity to meet so many people. And I went to
• 7:00
Speaker 5: a school with a really large underclass, a really large
• 7:04
Speaker 5: undergraduate population, and I wanted a wait to make my
• 7:07
Speaker 5: school feel smaller. So Greek life was just like one
• 7:09
Speaker 5: of the easier ways to do that totally.
• 7:12
Speaker 6: Do you guys feel like from talking to friends and
• 7:14
Speaker 6: like hearing from other people that people join sororities for
• 7:17
Speaker 6: like the wrong reasons sometimes or do you think that
• 7:20
Speaker 6: people go in with like the right reasons usually?
• 7:23
Speaker 1: I think it kind of depends, like your school at least,
• 7:28
Speaker 1: like I know, like it's such a huge thing with
• 7:30
Speaker 1: like the Southern schools of like if I don't get
• 7:32
Speaker 1: a sorority, like my college life is over with and
• 7:35
Speaker 1: like that definitely shouldn't ever be the case.
• 7:39
  Speaker 2: But I don't.
• 7:39
Speaker 1: I mean, I think it kind of depends on like
• 7:42
Speaker 1: if your intentions are to be part of a top
• 7:45
Speaker 1: house or like you think that it's gonna like get
• 7:47
Speaker 1: you into all the frat parties and gonna get you
• 7:50
Speaker 1: like little I don't know, social media like g limb Spotlight,
• 7:53
Speaker 1: Like you shouldn't do it just to have like the
• 7:56
Speaker 1: sorority name in your Instagram bio and like those little
• 7:59
Speaker 1: like kind of other perks. I guess it should be
• 8:03
Speaker 1: more about, like I'm joining because like I need to
• 8:06
Speaker 1: know that I'm having like a close knit group of
• 8:09
Speaker 1: friends who I can rely on and trust and are
• 8:12
Speaker 1: gonna essentially help me get through college. College is not
• 8:15
Speaker 1: fun all the time, and like you need the people
• 8:17
Speaker 1: to back you up and be there for you through it,
• 8:19
Speaker 1: and it's like you're not doing it for those reasons,
• 8:20
Speaker 1: then I would look elsewhere totally.
• 8:24
Speaker 2: Margot. I feel like SDS is so interesting to me
• 8:28
Speaker 2: because the top housing is like huge there. Like when
• 8:31
Speaker 2: I visited my friend, I had to like have a
• 8:34
Speaker 2: fake pi fi like group me, that's what it was called,
• 8:37
Speaker 2: group me account to like get in. Yeah, do you
• 8:40
Speaker 2: feel like that makes people there like overly care about
• 8:43
Speaker 2: the top house considering you can like only go into
• 8:45
Speaker 2: parties if you're like in one of those top.
• 8:47
Speaker 3: Houses on that kind of leads into what you just
• 8:50
Speaker 3: asked too, because I feel like a lot of people
• 8:53
Speaker 3: at SDC like, in order to have a social life
• 8:55
Speaker 3: and like go out, you need a group me and
• 8:57
Speaker 3: if it's not the top three houses and you kind
• 8:59
Speaker 3: of you literally can't go out. And it's so interesting
• 9:02
Speaker 3: because one of my best friends, so I went to
• 9:03
Speaker 3: high school with, we went to SDSU together and we
• 9:06
Speaker 3: went through recruitment and whatever, and she didn't get in
• 9:08
Speaker 3: to any of the houses and honestly led us to
• 9:11
Speaker 3: like not being friends because she could never go out
• 9:13
Speaker 3: and we had her sign into our group meeting and stuff,
• 9:16
Speaker 3: but literally like she just could never get in ever
• 9:18
Speaker 3: because they like knew because we'd go to the pre
• 9:20
Speaker 3: parties and then she'd like come late and it was
• 9:22
Speaker 3: just like so bad. But honestly, to me, like that
• 9:24
Speaker 3: was like one of the things that I hated the
• 9:26
Speaker 3: most about my school because it just sucks, Like there
• 9:28
Speaker 3: were so many great cool girls that like just didn't
• 9:31
Speaker 3: get into sorties that either had a bad experience or
• 9:34
Speaker 3: like you talked to the wrong person during work week
• 9:36
Speaker 3: and like you just don't bomb with that person. It
• 9:37
Speaker 3: kind of like messes up your whole experience. But it's
• 9:40
Speaker 3: definitely extremely competitive and kind of a bummer, like if
• 9:44
Speaker 3: you don't get into the top three, but a lot
• 9:46
Speaker 3: of people to it SDSD, like didn't even rush and
• 9:49
Speaker 3: still had a great time. So I feel like it's
• 9:51
Speaker 3: not like do you orde to join authority, but you
• 9:53
Speaker 3: definitely get perks, I mean going out and stuff to
• 9:57
  Speaker 3: the frats.
• 9:58
  Speaker 4: But yeah, I.
• 10:00
Speaker 5: Think maybe it's just a little bit different in my
• 10:01
Speaker 5: experience joining later, But I definitely when I graduated high
• 10:06
Speaker 5: school and like saw all my friends like joining sororities,
• 10:09
Speaker 5: I definitely think that the bigger consensus was joining just
• 10:12
Speaker 5: to meet people. And then obviously there was a couple
• 10:15
Speaker 5: of people that joined specifically because they wanted to be
• 10:18
Speaker 5: like in that sort of status position and like have
• 10:21
Speaker 5: like the name or like the Instagram bio change and
• 10:25
Speaker 5: like they cared a lot more about that. But I
• 10:28
Speaker 5: don't have a lot of friends who went to schools
• 10:30
Speaker 5: where Greek life was like a make or break thing.
• 10:33
Speaker 5: And I do have One of my best friends also
• 10:35
Speaker 5: went to San Diego State, and she ended up joining
• 10:38
Speaker 5: AKIO in her sophomore year only because all of her
• 10:41
Speaker 5: friends were in it, and it just became this type
• 10:43
Speaker 5: of thing where like she didn't she had.
• 10:45
Speaker 4: She's like the least.
• 10:46
Speaker 5: Sorority girl ever, but because she could never go out
• 10:48
Speaker 5: with them, she did it just to like be able
• 10:51
Speaker 5: to hang out with her friends that she had made
• 10:52
Speaker 5: freshman year. She didn't care about like the parties themselves,
• 10:55
Speaker 5: but just because she was never able to like go
• 10:57
Speaker 5: to the same events as them. So I feel like
• 10:59
Speaker 5: maybe for that reason, it's like it sucks that it
• 11:02
Speaker 5: matters that much. But I think it is definitely like
• 11:04
Speaker 5: a social like kind of like a social hierarchy thing,
• 11:07
Speaker 5: especially when you're a freshman and you want to like
• 11:09
Speaker 5: have that like thing in your bio.
• 11:11
Speaker 1: I remember, like the party thing when I was in
• 11:15
Speaker 1: a storty compared to when I was even at like
• 11:18
Speaker 1: such a like non party school is just so dumb
• 11:22
Speaker 1: of if you were in a sorority, like you technically
• 11:24
Speaker 1: like weren't allowed into the frats or if you didn't
• 11:26
Speaker 1: have like a bid, you weren't. And like my teammates
• 11:29
Speaker 1: and I like we would literally go to the frats
• 11:31
Speaker 1: and be like, we're athletes, Like we can't be in
• 11:33
Speaker 1: Greek life. Can we just like please come in, like
• 11:35
Speaker 1: we're not a liability or whatever, and like they would
• 11:38
Speaker 1: go like down to the wire and like make a
• 11:40
Speaker 1: show our roster photos like in line to get into
• 11:42
Speaker 1: the frats and like be like I don't believe you,
• 11:44
  Speaker 1: Like I don't believe that this isn't you. And we're
• 11:45
Speaker 1: like we literally go to Berkeley, like this is not
• 11:47
Speaker 1: a party school, Like these frats are not that good,
• 11:50
Speaker 1: and like the hierarchy that like gets made like through
• 11:53
Speaker 1: all that like and through all those like rules and
• 11:55
Speaker 1: everything is just like so ridiculous. But like at the
• 11:58
Speaker 1: end of the day too, like if you're I have
• 12:00
Speaker 1: plenty of friends, A lot of my friends are not
• 12:02
Speaker 1: in Greek life, and it's just like it's not that
• 12:05
Speaker 1: big of a deal. Like you'll be able to get
• 12:06
Speaker 1: in places. There's bars too, and like you become an
• 12:09
Speaker 1: upper classman, et cetera. But I do think that that's probably, yeah,
• 12:13
Speaker 1: like one of the biggest Like don't just join just
• 12:15
Speaker 1: so that you can get into the frats. They're not
• 12:17
Speaker 1: that great all the time.
• 12:19
Speaker 2: So that's like crazy because at my school it's like
• 12:21
Speaker 2: not like that at all, Like literally anyone can go
• 12:23
Speaker 2: to any party, and so I just have always thought
• 12:25
Speaker 2: that that concepts like crazy. I mean, it's like fun
• 12:28
Speaker 2: to say, like freshman, you're like what swere do you?
• 12:31
Speaker 2: Were you? And if a guy was like asking is
• 12:32
Speaker 2: like conversation, But like besides that, I feel like it
• 12:35
Speaker 2: literally doesn't matter. Let's move on to the top ten
• 12:52
Speaker 2: reasons according to this article. So I'm gonna go through
• 12:56
Speaker 2: all ten and we can just kind of talk about
• 12:57
Speaker 2: if we agree or disagree, and like how we would
• 13:00
Speaker 2: rank that on like our one to ten ranking. I
• 13:04
Speaker 2: feel like you guys are going to all agree that
• 13:06
Speaker 2: this one goes at number one. But to find life
• 13:08
Speaker 2: long friendships? Do you guys all like agree that that's
• 13:11
Speaker 2: number one? I feel like that's like what we are
• 13:13
Speaker 2: all just saying that's the main reason people join.
• 13:17
Speaker 4: Yeah, I completely agree, Okay.
• 13:19
Speaker 2: And then this next one is to feel a sense
• 13:22
Speaker 2: of belonging, which I feel like was what I was
• 13:24
Speaker 2: kind of talking about with like the purpose. I don't
• 13:26
Speaker 2: know if this would go at number two for like
• 13:28
Speaker 2: most people I know, but like I definitely think this
• 13:30
Speaker 2: is important and like what I was talking about, and
• 13:35
Speaker 2: like I'm curious what you guys have to say.
• 13:38
  Speaker 3: I feel like, honestly, it's a great number two. I
• 13:40
Speaker 3: feel like it kind of like we all kind of
• 13:41
Speaker 3: mentioned before, like it makes your school feel a lot smaller,
• 13:45
Speaker 3: and it feels like you can have those friendships and
• 13:47
Speaker 3: like people to relate to. So to me, I feel
• 13:49
Speaker 3: like number it would be a great number two.
• 13:51
  Speaker 4: I think it's a great number two.
• 13:53
Speaker 1: Knowing though that like just because you join a sorority,
• 13:56
Speaker 1: like you still need to put in like what you
• 13:58
Speaker 1: want to get out of it, especially like if you
• 14:01
Speaker 1: need to like go out of your way to like
• 14:03
Speaker 1: make friends and like be social and go to events
• 14:05
Speaker 1: and go to those things, and like if you really
• 14:07
Speaker 1: put yourself out there, then it does definitely I feel like,
• 14:09
Speaker 1: give you like a really good purpose and like a
• 14:13
Speaker 1: really good reason as to why you're in the house.
• 14:16
Speaker 1: But yeah, like definitely like put yourself out there in
• 14:19
Speaker 1: order to like make that a number two reason.
• 14:21
  Speaker 4: Totally Okay.
• 14:23
Speaker 2: The next one is to grow as a leader. So
• 14:25
Speaker 2: obviously I feel like this is important because I got
• 14:28
Speaker 2: very involved in my a sorority. But do you guys
• 14:30
Speaker 2: agree with this one?
• 14:31
Speaker 5: I think this one's probably different for different personality types,
• 14:34
Speaker 5: but I do think overall, generally speaking, by joining a sorority,
• 14:39
Speaker 5: you do grow those sorts of traits about yourself without
• 14:42
Speaker 5: even really realizing it. And I think it's just from
• 14:45
Speaker 5: the fact of spending so much time with so many people,
• 14:48
Speaker 5: you do kind of improve, like your social skills and
• 14:53
Speaker 5: your communication skills, and therefore you improve your ability to
• 14:55
Speaker 5: be a leader in like your friend groups or whether
• 14:57
Speaker 5: it be like you joining zech so I think it's
• 14:59
Speaker 5: my It could be like it's like a more unexpected
• 15:02
Speaker 5: benefit of joining a sorority, unless like your main goal
• 15:05
Speaker 5: is to be like in one of those exact positions.
• 15:08
Speaker 5: But I do think I would definitely have that in
• 15:11
Speaker 5: my top five, just because I feel like the ability
• 15:14
Speaker 5: to be a leader not only in the sense of
• 15:17
Speaker 5: like what it actually means to stand up in front
• 15:18
Speaker 5: of a group and talk, but also what it means
• 15:20
Speaker 5: to be a role model for people, and I feel
• 15:22
Speaker 5: like that is a sort of role that I've been
• 15:25
Speaker 5: able to have in that, Like I'm friends with a
• 15:27
Speaker 5: lot of underclassmen through being in a sorority, and I've
• 15:29
Speaker 5: been able to improve my ability to be like someone
• 15:31
Speaker 5: that they look up to and someone that they ask
• 15:33
Speaker 5: questions too. And that's been like probably one of my
• 15:36
Speaker 5: favorite parts. So yeah, I would say probably that's like
• 15:38
Speaker 5: my number two. Honestly for me, I.
• 15:41
Speaker 3: Feel like, like Sabina said, it's kind of like to
• 15:43
Speaker 3: each their own, but for me, I never was on
• 15:45
Speaker 3: EXAC and I never like even have a little so
• 15:47
Speaker 3: I never really felt like a leader in my sorority.
• 15:50
Speaker 3: I feel like it was kind of like on my own,
• 15:52
Speaker 3: but I definitely looked up to like my friends who
• 15:54
Speaker 3: were the president, all the work that they put in
• 15:55
Speaker 3: to like grow our chapter and like lead our chapter.
• 15:59
Speaker 3: But to me, it being a leader like or being
• 16:01
Speaker 3: on exec was never like my top choice or even
• 16:03
Speaker 3: like wanting to do it. So not my top three,
• 16:08
Speaker 3: but maybe my top like five or six.
• 16:11
Speaker 2: Okay, I'm go into the next one. Number four is
• 16:14
Speaker 2: to give back through philanthropy.
• 16:17
Speaker 1: I definitely think that this needs to be much higher
• 16:20
Speaker 1: up there. I would say that was probably like within
• 16:22
Speaker 1: my top three especially when choosing a house, like really
• 16:26
Speaker 1: like think about, like when you're going into philanthropy day,
• 16:28
Speaker 1: like really think about like which one like you feel
• 16:32
Speaker 1: like you can really like want to like embody and
• 16:34
Speaker 1: represent and like give back to and like which one
• 16:37
Speaker 1: you really resonate with, Like I know with Kapa, like
• 16:39
Speaker 1: being mental health, that just like went across for so
• 16:42
Speaker 1: many different people in so many different ways, and philanthropy
• 16:45
Speaker 1: was definitely what sold me already on to join Kappa.
• 16:49
Speaker 1: So yeah, like it's it may seem like something that
• 16:52
Speaker 1: like you have to do, but like if you really
• 16:54
Speaker 1: can resonate with it and want to give back in
• 16:57
Speaker 1: that way, like it makes it so much more rewarding
• 16:59
Speaker 1: and it's like some that's really great to like look
• 17:01
Speaker 1: back on of just like bigger than I went out
• 17:04
Speaker 1: and we did this and we did that. Like no,
• 17:06
Speaker 1: like you guys like really made a charitable difference for
• 17:09
Speaker 1: those four years that.
• 17:10
Speaker 4: You were there. I agree.
• 17:12
Speaker 5: I think at our school and specifically in my storty
• 17:15
Speaker 5: in dg are planthropy of service for site and a
• 17:18
Speaker 5: lot of the girls, I didn't because I had another
• 17:21
Speaker 5: like volunteer hours that I was doing outside of my sutorty,
• 17:24
Speaker 5: but a lot of the girls spent hours and hours
• 17:27
Speaker 5: on end, like going to events where they were able
• 17:30
Speaker 5: to help out people without people who are blind, and
• 17:34
Speaker 5: like they benefited a lot from that, and it ended
• 17:38
Speaker 5: up being something where I know a lot of the
• 17:39
Speaker 5: girls that are older than me, once they graduated, they
• 17:42
Speaker 5: actually continued to be a part of those organizations. So
• 17:45
Speaker 5: I do think that there's definitely like an influence, a
• 17:48
Speaker 5: really positive influence, especially on a local level, that the
• 17:51
Speaker 5: girls were able to participate in totally.
• 17:54
Speaker 2: So this next one I feel like is lower for
• 17:55
Speaker 2: me just because I was so involved in my southrority specifically.
• 17:58
Speaker 2: But number five is to become more involved on campus
• 18:02
Speaker 2: like in general. So I just think this is different
• 18:04
Speaker 2: for everyone. Like you were just saying you were like
• 18:07
Speaker 2: super involved in out of your sorority organization, so this
• 18:10
Speaker 2: one probably resonates with you more, But I think it
• 18:12
Speaker 2: would more be in the sense of like connecting with
• 18:15
Speaker 2: other people and your sworty and what they're evolved outside
• 18:17
  Speaker 2: of the sorority.
• 18:18
Speaker 5: I think it definitely helped my ability to I don't know,
• 18:21
Speaker 5: maybe again this is like one of those like subconscious things,
• 18:25
Speaker 5: but like I think it definitely helped my confidence in
• 18:27
Speaker 5: feeling like a part of the like student body on campus,
• 18:33
Speaker 5: because I obviously, like I got to school late, I
• 18:35
Speaker 5: didn't have those same like two extra years of creating
• 18:38
Speaker 5: connections with other students that like, when I joined a sorority,
• 18:41
Speaker 5: I felt way more confident in my own role on campus.
• 18:44
Speaker 5: But I don't think that that was through like I
• 18:47
Speaker 5: didn't join any other clubs or organizations other than being
• 18:49
Speaker 5: in Greek life. But I do feel like, similar to
• 18:51
Speaker 5: what Margot had mentioned earlier, of feeling like I could
• 18:54
Speaker 5: walk on campus and recognize faces, that was definitely like
• 18:56
Speaker 5: a huge part of things.
• 18:57
Speaker 4: So maybe that kind of like answers that a little bit,
• 19:01
  Speaker 4: But I.
• 19:02
  Speaker 5: Don't think it made a I don't think it necessarily
• 19:05
Speaker 5: influenced my ability to like feel more confident in like
• 19:08
Speaker 5: joining other clubs, but maybe just in like feeling like
• 19:12
Speaker 5: I was more like a Berkeley student.
• 19:14
Speaker 2: Totally Okay. The next one is like, I don't agree
• 19:32
Speaker 2: with this one, but to build a professional network. I
• 19:34
Speaker 2: didn't join my sorority to build a professional network, but
• 19:37
Speaker 2: I'm curious if you guys felt like that in any way.
• 19:41
Speaker 3: I definitely enjoin it to build a professional network. But
• 19:45
Speaker 3: I feel like there's so many smart, amazing girls that
• 19:48
Speaker 3: are in my chapter that have done like amazing things
• 19:50
Speaker 3: now postgrad that I feel like I could message or
• 19:53
Speaker 3: like ask them how they're doing it their job. And
• 19:55
Speaker 3: I feel like to like looking at the upper class
• 19:57
Speaker 3: and like coming in freshman year and like not really
• 20:00
Speaker 3: knowing and like seeing where they're going, and like kind
• 20:02
Speaker 3: of like messaging people I feel like will always be
• 20:04
Speaker 3: super beneficial as well too, like if you're like trying
• 20:07
Speaker 3: to get a minor and you're curious about like what
• 20:10
Speaker 3: it's going to be, or what the classes took, or
• 20:12
Speaker 3: like if they went abroad, and like what good colleges
• 20:14
Speaker 3: that you could go to. Like I studied abroad in Paris,
• 20:16
Speaker 3: and another girl who was my big she went to
• 20:20
Speaker 3: the Para School business, so I kind of got to
• 20:22
Speaker 3: talk to her all about that. And then another girl
• 20:24
Speaker 3: I was interviewing for a company like post grad at
• 20:27
Speaker 3: Pottery Barn, and she had worked there and kind of
• 20:29
Speaker 3: helped me. So I feel like in the long run
• 20:31
Speaker 3: of things, like you could definitely use it to like
• 20:32
Speaker 3: your ability, and like you'll always be in the chapter
• 20:35
Speaker 3: like forever, so basically, so it would be good to
• 20:38
Speaker 3: like use that as like your benefit to your benefit,
• 20:40
Speaker 3: especially if people are like doing exciting, fun things.
• 20:43
Speaker 1: I definitely don't think that it should be a like
• 20:46
Speaker 1: large reason and as to you join. I think it
• 20:48
Speaker 1: should be something that like maybe after or like you
• 20:50
Speaker 1: start to realize that, like you're just surrounded by so
• 20:52
Speaker 1: many like really smart intelligent women that like aren't really
• 20:55
Speaker 1: driven and have a lot of things like kind of
• 20:57
Speaker 1: going for them and just like either use it to
• 20:59
Speaker 1: like ask them advice. I used to ask them questions
• 21:01
Speaker 1: or ask how they got there, et cetera. I remember
• 21:04
Speaker 1: when I was rushing going down to my two houses,
• 21:07
Speaker 1: there was kind of one house that almost just like
• 21:10
Speaker 1: made me feel like I was getting like recruited. Like
• 21:12
Speaker 1: I kind of felt like every time I was going
• 21:14
Speaker 1: in there, it was like almost a job interview, and
• 21:16
Speaker 1: like they were really like showing like all the inter
• 21:19
Speaker 1: summer internships that they've done and like a lot of
• 21:21
Speaker 1: the things, and it's like this is great and all,
• 21:23
Speaker 1: and like you guys are have so much going for
• 21:26
Speaker 1: you guys. But I think when I was like rolling
• 21:29
Speaker 1: down to it, I was like, I'm doing this to
• 21:30
Speaker 1: make friends. I'm not doing it to like have LinkedIn
• 21:33
Speaker 1: connections and like whatever house that you're gonna go into,
• 21:37
Speaker 1: like there's gonna have like you're gonna be surrounded with
• 21:40
Speaker 1: girls that have a lot of things going for them.
• 21:42
Speaker 1: So I think more so like maybe after you join,
• 21:45
Speaker 1: like get to know the girls and like see where
• 21:47
Speaker 1: they're at and like see like kind of like what
• 21:48
Speaker 1: they've done and like learn and like you guys are
• 21:50
Speaker 1: there to motivate one another.
• 21:52
Speaker 5: I definitely I completely agree, and I think that once again,
• 21:55
Speaker 5: this is one of those things where it's like an
• 21:57
Speaker 5: unexpected benefit, but it shouldn't be like the reason that
• 21:59
Speaker 5: you do it For me, Like I actually got my
• 22:01
Speaker 5: job through my sorority because of one of my like
• 22:05
Speaker 5: sorority sisters was leaving, and like I had managed to
• 22:09
Speaker 5: kind of like ask around like if anyone had had
• 22:11
Speaker 5: any jobs in an industry I was really interested in,
• 22:14
Speaker 5: and next seen, you know, like I got her job.
• 22:16
Speaker 5: So like I feel like I'm a maybe unique case
• 22:19
Speaker 5: because I do feel like I owe a lot of
• 22:21
Speaker 5: like DG for being the reason that I like have
• 22:24
Speaker 5: the job that I have now postgrad. But again, it's
• 22:26
Speaker 5: like one of those like benefits that I think if
• 22:29
Speaker 5: you go into it with that expectation, it could be
• 22:32
Speaker 5: a little bit superficial. Not superficial, but like you shouldn't
• 22:35
Speaker 5: be joining a sorority to get LinkedIn connections, Like I
• 22:37
Speaker 5: completely agree with that. I think it's like the ability
• 22:40
Speaker 5: to just like know that there's so many people in
• 22:42
Speaker 5: like your quote unquote network of just like your alum
• 22:46
Speaker 5: like your big alumni group, which I think is really cool,
• 22:49
Speaker 5: and like we had a lot of really incredible opportunities
• 22:51
Speaker 5: where moms would come in and talk in our sorority
• 22:54
Speaker 5: about like what they've been doing since they graduated. And
• 22:56
Speaker 5: I actually really benefited from that and really appreciated that
• 22:59
Speaker 5: sort of mentor shit. But it's like it's kind of
• 23:02
  Speaker 5: a perk that isn't I don't think it should be
• 23:03
Speaker 5: like a huge priority.
• 23:05
Speaker 2: Agreed. Okay, Another one I don't agree with, Sorry, to
• 23:09
Speaker 2: receive academic support. Did not join my sworty for that reason. Again,
• 23:13
Speaker 2: could just be me, but I did not join my
• 23:16
Speaker 2: swarty to receive academic support, And I don't know anyone
• 23:19
  Speaker 2: who has.
• 23:20
Speaker 4: Do you guys, not at all? You're negative.
• 23:24
Speaker 5: Probably you probably took away for my studying time, But
• 23:27
Speaker 5: like any good way, I.
• 23:28
Speaker 3: Feel like honestly, it was like a negative thing because
• 23:30
Speaker 3: if people had bad groods, they like couldn't go out
• 23:32
Speaker 3: and we're on probation and had to like prove their
• 23:34
Speaker 3: grades for like the rest of the semester. So I
• 23:37
Speaker 3: feeling I came back to like get people if their
• 23:39
Speaker 3: grades weren't so good.
• 23:41
Speaker 1: Yeah, kind of like one of those things of like
• 23:43
Speaker 1: especially when like you live in the house, it's like,
• 23:44
Speaker 1: oh my god, like I need all of you guys
• 23:46
Speaker 1: to like get away from me right now so that
• 23:48
Speaker 1: I can like focus and do my homework kind of thing.
• 23:52
Speaker 2: So definitely not Yeah, And I just feel like like
• 23:56
Speaker 2: once you are in college, like you're only gonna like
• 23:59
Speaker 2: study and care about school. Like if you do, like
• 24:01
Speaker 2: I feel like you're like an adult at that point,
• 24:03
Speaker 2: Like no one needs to be telling you to study,
• 24:05
Speaker 2: like you're going to do it because.
• 24:06
Speaker 4: It's important to you.
• 24:07
Speaker 2: So I just personally feel like that's kind of on
• 24:10
Speaker 2: your own. The next one, I'm not really sure I
• 24:12
Speaker 2: quite understand, but it's to develop personally, and I'm I'm
• 24:15
Speaker 2: just gonna take that as like grow like yourself is
• 24:18
Speaker 2: you're just going to grow from being in authorty, which
• 24:23
Speaker 2: I agree with but also like I don't know how
• 24:25
Speaker 2: much that was specifically my Sowarty. Like, I just feel
• 24:28
Speaker 2: like college are just like big years you like go
• 24:30
Speaker 2: through a lot for the first time after like living
• 24:32
Speaker 2: at home with your parents and like moving to a
• 24:37
Speaker 2: new place and like making all new friends. I don't know,
• 24:40
Speaker 2: I just feel like there's a lot of like obstacles
• 24:41
Speaker 2: you go through to grow, and like I think sorority
• 24:43
Speaker 2: is part of it, but I don't know if it's.
• 24:44
Speaker 6: Like the whole aspect of like growing.
• 24:47
Speaker 2: So I don't know, but I agree with that placed
• 24:49
Speaker 2: at number eight, Like I feel like that's like accurate
• 24:51
  Speaker 2: to me.
• 24:52
Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that there's just so many situations that
• 24:55
Speaker 5: you're put in being in a sorority that you have
• 24:57
Speaker 5: to be forced to grow that I don't necessarily think
• 25:00
Speaker 5: you would be experiencing otherwise. And maybe that's like learning
• 25:03
Speaker 5: how to live with sixty other girls, that's like a
• 25:06
Speaker 5: growth that like you've never expect or learning how to
• 25:10
Speaker 5: navigate like a social obligation while also needing to like
• 25:14
Speaker 5: finish an assignment, like those sorts of like kind of
• 25:18
Speaker 5: just things that you have to navigate. I think you
• 25:21
Speaker 5: learn probably a lot of like social skills and communication
• 25:26
Speaker 5: skills and like loyalty and you know things like that
• 25:29
Speaker 5: that I think necessity will learn those in college in general.
• 25:32
Speaker 5: But like being in a story kind of like helps
• 25:34
Speaker 5: you kind of nourish them. So I think eight, maybe
• 25:37
Speaker 5: like seven or eight, maybe swap it with the other one.
• 25:40
Speaker 2: Totally, Okay. Number nine is which I touched on a
• 25:44
Speaker 2: little bit earlier to find mentors in role models, which
• 25:47
Speaker 2: I think I would have put higher up on my
• 25:49
Speaker 2: list personally. What did you guys think?
• 25:51
Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like that deserves to be a bit
• 25:54
Speaker 1: higher up for sure, of just like especially like your
• 25:57
Speaker 1: bigs or like your grand big, et cetera. Like I
• 26:00
Speaker 1: think knowing that like you're joining a house that like
• 26:03
Speaker 1: you joined it for reasons of like you kind of
• 26:06
Speaker 1: have admiration for those girls and like like really like
• 26:10
Speaker 1: kind of like want to support like what they have
• 26:11
Speaker 1: going on kind of like follow into those footsteps. So
• 26:14
Speaker 1: like those should be people that like you look up
• 26:16
Speaker 1: to and like people who you want to surround yourselves with.
• 26:19
Speaker 1: Then I feel like even if they're the same age
• 26:21
Speaker 1: as you, even if they're younger than you, like it
• 26:23
Speaker 1: really doesn't matter. Of just like having a lot of
• 26:26
Speaker 1: just like off or like the girls that like you're
• 26:28
Speaker 1: surrounding yourself with and like knowing that like you can
• 26:31
Speaker 1: are in a space where like they can give you advice,
• 26:34
  Speaker 1: be a mentor. I feel like that's like something that's
• 26:37
Speaker 1: like majorly contributes to the whole, Like sisterhood kind of
• 26:40
Speaker 1: term of it all is like you're surrounded by girls
• 26:43
Speaker 1: who are always going to have your back and like
• 26:45
Speaker 1: guide you through whatever.
• 26:47
Speaker 2: Okay, last one, which I think we're all gonna agree
• 26:49
Speaker 2: with again, I think I would have ranked it higher,
• 26:52
Speaker 2: but totally agree with it being on the list. To
• 26:54
Speaker 2: create lasting memories, I think is like for a lot
• 26:58
Speaker 2: of people to number one reason why they're joining us
• 27:00
Speaker 2: sorority along with lifelong friendships.
• 27:01
Speaker 4: But I think like.
• 27:04
Speaker 2: Your memories in a sorority house and like living in
• 27:07
