On this podcast, we're gonna be talking about the books we've read recently, what's on our Book Radar, we're gonna spill any bookish tea that we may have, and we're also going to be talking about our most recent buddy reads, and we're going to be doing some deep dives into favorite books, series, authors, tropes, anything that strikes out fancy that week. Um... 02:21 [Other BRats laughing] 02:25 J: [Laughing] My husband broke his toe real bad, and I almost passed out when I saw it. 02:29 [Other BRats laughing] 02:32 J: I did not...expect...to...to feel that way about it, cuz...I've passed out in my life, but mostly it's when I get hurt, not when somebody else does, so maybe my empathy is just really growing as I get old. 02:49 K: [Guffaw] 02:50 C: You were just really concerned for his feet. 02:53 K: Yes! 02:53 M: I was gonna say, or it was because it...it was his foot? 02:57 J: [Laughing gasp] I dunno, I dunno what it was, but...wheew-whee, I...I almost lost myself...[giggle] to the abyss. 03:05 K: [Chuckles] 03:07 J Lucky for me, um, my wifey is not squeamish like that, and she was able to take him to the ER. Cuz if was just me here...uh, we probably would've had a problem. Cuz I...oof. Yeah. It was not a fun time. I felt really bad for him, too, because he was coming in...[laughs] with his food to eat dinner, and he just like...kicked the chair... 03:30 M: Oh nooo! 03:32 J: And he didn't get a single bite in. 03:34 All: Aww... 03:34 C: Oh no... 03:35 J: So...and then he was gone...the both of them, actually, didn't get to eat any dinner, and they were gone for like, a little over three hours, and it was 8:30pm, so...[laughs] 03:37 K: [Sad noise] 03:46 C: Oh my gosh. Did you eat their dinners? 03:48 M: I was just gonna ask that. 03:49 J: Noooo! 03:50 [Other BRats laughing] 03:52 J: Okay, I had like, four bites of my dinner, and then I couldn't even finish my dinner because I was so like...spiral eyes. 03:54 M: [Diabolic laughter] 03:59 C: Concerned? 04:00 Like, "Oh my gahhhhd." 04:01 [Other BRats laughing] 04:04 J: Well...I mean...yeah...okay yes...I was very concerned...um...about the foot. Not because...not because I was just passing out. [Laughing] 04:13 K: [Chuckles] 04:14 J: Yeah, I couldn't eat any more, so I put all of our stuff in the fridge, and then I went to Dairy Queen and got us all Blizzards instead. [Laughs] 04:20 C: [Laughs] 04:22 K: [Breathless laughing] 04:24 M: You were like- 04:26 J: [Laughs] After I was okay enough to drive, that is. I did not drive while I was still feeling dizzy, but, once I came down from that, I was like, "You know what? I really need ice cream right now." 04:35 M: [Laughing hard] 04:37 C: [Coughing laugh] 04:37 K: [Breathless laughing continues] 04:38 So I went to Dairy Queen and I got us all Blizzards. And I put theirs in the freezer. 04:41 C: [Laughing] That's well-deserved after that day. 04:44 J: I agree! I couldn't agree more. Yeah, so that's um...that's the fun times that happened to me this week. [Laughing] Woohoo! Kit, anything...anything going on over there? 04:58 K: As you guys know, but, other people may not know, I am putting together a tank; ready to adopt some hermit crabs from people who are looking to re-home them. 05:07 [Yay in the background] 05:07 K: And we had the saga of The Beast... 05:11 [Group murmurs] 05:11 J: [Distressed noises] 05:13 K: [Laughing] ...where I had recently bought some fresh moss, because I'm planting it up a bit, and I woke up at 7am to feed my dog, and there just staring at me through the glass nearest to my bed was this giant beetle. 05:29 J: [Fake sobbing sounds] Nooo... 05:31 K: [Chuckling] 05:32 M: [Diabolic Laughter] 05:34 J: Nope. No. 05:34 K: And it was terrifying. And I had to live with the fact that it was there...for like... 05:40 C: [Breathy laugh] 05:41 K: ...eight hours. Because I couldn't catch it. I pretended that it didn't exist and did some other things in the tank, and then I accidentally touched it! 05:48 M: [More diabolic laughing] 05:49 J: No. No! 05:52 K: Normally, I am not squeamish. For some reason, this just...it just got me. [Laughs] 05:59 J: Maybe you were absorbing my squeamishness as you told me about it. 06:03 K: [Laughing] 06:03 M: Waking up to your guys' messages was the fucking funniest thing ever. It was like the equivalent of that Community meme where Troy walks in with the pizza and everything is on fire and people are running around. 06:16 K: [Laughs] 06:18 J: Seriously though, yes, because I was like, "BURN IT!" 06:21 K: Yes. 06:21 M: [Wheezing laugh] 06:21 J: "Light your house on fire! No, You're moving in with me! 06:24 M: [Continues laughing] 06:25 K: Yeah. 06:26 J: "You gotta get out of there! It's not safe!" [BRats laughing together] 06:29 M: Kit's looking up all the information about it. [Laughs more] 06:32 K: Yeah, I'm just like, "They fly! I don't want it flying!" 06:35 M: [Laughing so much] 06:36 J: Yeah, they're just learning more facts that are making it even more horrifying, and I'm just like, "No...NO...NOOO!" [Distraught laughing] 06:43 All: [Gasping laughter] 06:46 K: [Deep breath] So, after accidentally touching it, I did, in fact, manage to catch it... 06:50 C: [Fake gagging sounds] 06:50 K: ...in a glass. Didn't have to touch it. Uh...yeah. Safely removed. [Deep sigh] 06:56 J: Thank goodness. 06:57 K: So yes, it was a whole saga. [Chuckles] 06:59 J: It really was. 07:00 K: I'm still not recovered. 07:01 J: Me either. 07:02 K: But yeah, that was... 07:02 C: [Giggles building] JD's so traumatized. 07:08 J: I'm so traumatized by your trauma. [Unhinged laughter] 07:11 K: [Chuckles] Caity was like, "I wanna see!" 07:12 C: [Laughs] 07:13 M: [Laughing so hard] 07:14 K: "Send me a picture!" And JD was like, "Nooooo!" [BRats continue to gasp for air] 07:17 J: "Spare me!!" 07:18 C: I was gonna ask JD to send me a picture of the husband's foot. 07:22 M: [Big laugh] 07:23 K: [Laughing] 07:23 J:Oh...I did not take a picture of that. Eugh. No no noo. 07:26 C: [Gremlin laugh] 07:29 J: I shouldn't even think about it, honestly, I'm too scared of what'll happen. 07:33 C: How is his foot now? 07:35 J: He's in a boot now...so...that's been...shitty. [Megan and Kit laughing together] 07:42 J: It's just really awkward, but uh...as far as the actual pain, it's not been too bad. He said mostly he can't really feel it until like...the end of the day. [Gremlin laughing again] 08:25 M: [Prolonged chuckling] This week, I had a lot that happened. The thing I wrote down...[wheezing laugh]...down...about my week was how JD's week got worse when we sat down on uh, what was that? Friday? 08:41 [BRats laugh] 08:43 M: [Still laughing at JD's expense] To edit the podcast together. 08:46 J: [Pained groan, rising in pitch] 08:47 M: And I was gonna...[Laughing still] I was gonna show them how to do it. Um...[Giggles] and then almost four hours later...[Laughing] 08:54 J: Nothing. Nope. 08:55 M: Nothing. 08:56 All: [Laughing] 08:58 M: So yeah, we couldn't even get the files downloaded first. And then I finally got them downloaded. And then I uploaded them. And then...yeah, and then they just learned that there wasn't enough memory space on their computer. And um... 09:11 C: [Exhales a laugh] 09:11 J: Yep. And after I had...also tried, you know, getting everything downloaded...I had to wait forever...And then my mic stopped working a couple of times. So...I couldn't talk to Megan anymore. And I was just like... 09:25 M: [Diabolic laughing] 09:26 C: [Sympathetic chuckles] 09:28 J: "Why is this happening??" It was a disaster. It...It truly...uhh...I was ready to...just...shove everything off...the desk... 09:39 M: Yeah. 09:40 J: And...right into the garbage. 09:42 [Megan and Kit laugh together] 09:43 J: [Sardonic laugh] I just wanna help! [Whining] I just wanna help. 09:48 M: [Imitating JD] "Let me help youuuu." 09:48 J: [Still whining] I wanna learn. But noooo, the universe says noooo. 09:52 M: I know, I'm sorry. 09:54 J: [Sad baby whine] Yeah, that felt like a complete waste of time. That was very frustrating. Godddd. And I mean, it's a little bit funny thinking back about it now, it is a little bit funny, because I am cursed. 09:57 M: [Breathy laughter] 10:05 J: But um... 10:05 M: [Laughing] 10:05 J: If you can't laugh about a curse, then... 10:08 M: Then you're gonna cry about it. 10:10 K: [Somber chuckles] 10:10 J: Then you cry about it. And I don't want to do that. 10:12 [Megan and Kit chuckling] 10:14 J: So... 10:15 M: What about you, Caity? What'd you do this week? 10:17 C: I'm trying to think of what I did this week, and literally drawing a blank. 10:20 M: [Laughing] 10:21 C: I... 10:22 K: [Giggles] 10:23 C: All I know is it snowed so much yesterday and I keep thinking, like, "It's March. It's supposed to be spring! And I'm so upset about this. But...I mean, it was a fine...I went to Michael's and I got craft stuff, which I'm very excited about. I follow this Instagram account, and they do like...you know when people go hunting, and they take the head of the animal and put it on a plaque? It's really weird? 10:45 K: [Laugh gets stuck in the back of his throat] 10:46 C: Well...[Laughs] There's this account, and they do that... 10:47 K: [Gremlin energy] Yeh... 10:48 C: ...but with stuffed animals. 10:49 J: My friend does that! 10:52 C: Yes! I'm obsessed with it! Like, lots of lace, and little clown hats, and I just...it makes me so happy. And I decided I could do this. So I went, and I bought a bunch of ribbons, and a little plaque thingy, and I'm gonna go to the thrift store, I'm gonna find myself a stuffed animal whose head I can put on a wall. 11:08 J Yaaaaas. 11:10 K: [Disbelieving exhale] Oh my god! 11:11 C: And I'm gonna make it! 11:12 M: [Giggles] 11:13 J: That's amazing. My friend made one with a stingray. Like a little stuffed stingray. 11:17 C: Awww! That's so cute. I thought about trying to needle felt something, cuz I could needle felt my own little head, and then I was thinking it would be cool to do a worm.But I worry that if I did a worm coming out, it would just look like a penis, and... 11:30 M: A penis! 11:31 [All the BRats guffaw like immature 3rd graders] 11:32 J: There's always that. 11:33 C: Yeah. 11:34 J: You gotta be careful. 11:35 K: [Laughing] 11:36 C: Yeah. 11:36 K: [Cackling] 11:37 C: The worm-to-penis pipeline is...you know... [Everyone laughs loudly] 11:41 K:It's fine. It would have a smiley face. 11:43 J: Aww! That's true... 11:44 C: Happy penis! Circumcised, yes. 11:47 J: Well, now I think you should do it. 11:49 [Caity and Megan both laugh] 11:50 C: Yeah. 11:51 K: This is so not where I thought you were going with this. [BRats all laugh again] 11:55 C: So that was my week. [Giggles] 11:57 J: Alright, so, let's move on to talking about some of the books that we read. So, my favorite read...or I guess reads...from the past couple of weeks has been the Dark Trails series by Em Jae Black, which starts with Jack Rabbit. And then it also has Rabbit Hole, and Rabbit Hunt. 12:20 M: That word is banned. 12:22 K: [Breathless laugh] Holes. 12:22 J: Yeah, sorry. Sorry about that, but it is the name of the book...ummm... 12:26 M: [Giggling] 12:26 ...Rabbit Hole. 12:28 K: I don't mind the word. 12:29 J: [Deep sigh] Yeah, and it's...Rabbit Hole is actually the longest of the three books, so...it's powerful. That's a powerful hole. Okay! Umm... 12:38 C: [Busts out laughing] 12:39 M: [Trying to keep in big giggles] 12:40 J: My favorite of the weeks: Dark Trails. I have been seeing people posting quotes about this series for so long, and basically like, from the first time I read one, I added it to my TBR. [Laughs] I was like, "WHOA that sounds really good. I'm gonna like that." But it's been a long time since I added it to my TBR, since I've been seeing all the quotes and everything. I definitely get the hype now, and I wish I'd read it sooner. But, the thing that I think is...a little bit of an injustice...in a way...is that I didn't realize that it was like an- and don't take this the wrong way, but I didn't realize it was like an actual story? 13:25 K: [Pronounced chuckling] 13:25 M: [Evil villain laughter] 13:27 J: Like, I was under the impression that it was pure erotica, basically. Because every time anyone ever talks about it, they're basically just like, "Oh my gosh, yes, it's so hot! Blah blah blah!" Which, yes. Yes it is. But! It's also so sweet! Like, there's...sweet...relationship...stuff happening in it, too, and I...I didn't know...to expect that. Like, I was not expecting a relationship between these two characters. Because, I mean, if you've read the quotes from these books, um...degradation and humiliation are some of the biggest themes. So...Jack is...is very, very mean [sadist giggle] to Addy. 14:09 M: Aww. 14:10 J: Very cruel. to him. But he likes itttt. 14:13 M: [Diabolic giggle] 14:15 J: [Exhaling laugh] Um, but like, because of that, and those pretty much being like the only exposure that I had to the series, and the fact that no one ever talks about how sweet it actually is?? Like, I did not expect there to be relationship building? And background stuff to this book? And like, as I was reading the first one, I was like, "Wait a minute...are we...wait a minute...are we gonna...[gasp] are they gonna date??" [Laughs] 14:42 [Kit and Megan laugh] 14:43 M: [Imitating JD] "This isn't smut!" 14:44 J: I didn't know! [Laughs again] 14:47 M: This has plot! [Giggles] 14:48 J: I just...didn't know! Yeah! It totally has plot! And I just didn't know that it did, and I'm just like, I dunno, I loved it so much. 14:58 M: You know how..you know how plot...plot is uh...is a trope...um...surprise plot should be a trope, too. [Giggling] 15:05 J: Yeah! I mean, I just was...maybe I'm...maybe it's weird? That I didn't know that? I dunno. It feels kinda weird that I didn't know that? But, I didn't! And I was just pleasantly surprised. So, basically, um, I guess I'll tell you now what the book is about. 15:20 M: [Chuckles] 15:20 J: Instead of just telling you how much I liked it. 15:23 K: Oh, well, don't worry, it's downloaded on my kindle. We're good to go. 15:26 J: Yaaaayyyy! Okay, so... 15:28 M: [Laughs like a goof] 15:29 J:...so pretty much...lowdown of the plot: this book is about Addy, who...works in a coffee shop, and kind of like- I wouldn't say that he's like...well...down on his luck? But like...his life isn't the greatest. He was raised by a single mom who...didn't really pay that much attention to him. They're not super close. He's just kind of by himself in the world. 15:56 M: We love a lonely boy. 15:57 K: [Sad noise] 15:58 J: Yeahhh, he's working at a coffee shop, trying to save money to go back to school, because he had to drop out of school...um, because he just couldn't afford it anymore. He's living in like...this garbage apartment. 16:12 M: Aww. 16:12 J: Just...you know. Straight up not having a good time. But he's still...really sweet. And his big thing is that he loves to read romance. [Giggles] And he's big into this one romance series that's about Werewolf Mafia Bikers. [Laughs] 16:29 [Caity and Megan laugh] 16:31 K: [Cackles] 16:32 M: Uhh, authors? Authors, please? 16:34 J: Please? Where are they? 16:36 M: Take note? 16:37 J: Yeah. 16:38 C: [Giggles] 16:38 J: Oh, and he really likes hiking and being in the forest and stuff because his grandpa watched him while his mom was always working, and he was really into camping and stuff, so he, like, took him out camping. And so he has like, a big appreciation for nature. And he goes to the...national forest a lot. So, at the beginning of this book, he gets off from work and decides he's gonna go read at the national forest. At the park. So...he goes there and he's reading his...his werewolf smut. [Laughs] 17:08 M: [Evil villain laughter] 17:09 J: And he's just getting so engrossed in it that he...he doesn't realize that he's like, slowly inching a hand down his pants. 17:19 C: Oh my gosh. 17:20 [Megan and Kit laugh] 17:22 J: [Gasps in air] And...he's in public, okay? And that's like, he can't be doing that. 17:26 M: [Laughing more] 17:27 J: And normally, he would know that. But he just got swept up in the moment, and...who finds him like that, but Jack? Who is the park ranger. And...he's furious [giggle] when he sees him. 17:34 M: [Soft gasp] 17:39 M: [Diabolic cackle] 17:41 K: Desecrating the forest! 17:42 J: Yeahhh. Yeah! And he like, notes that he's seen Addy in the park before, and he thinks that he's some snobby rich kid? Because whenever he comes to the park, he always has like, a fancy coffee drink with him? But it's just cuz he works at that coffee shop, ya know? 17:58 C:Oh my...what a...let a guy enjoy a little drink! [Laughs] 18:02 Megan and JD: I know! 18:04 K: [Laughing] 18:05 J: Let him have his little treat! Yeah, so, Jack already thinks that he's like, some stuck-up rich kid, and then he finds him...hand down his pants...uhhh... 18:13 C: [Giggles more] 18:16 J: [Scowly Jack voice] Desecrating the forest...in broad daylight! And he's...pissed! So he comes up to Addy, and Addy's like, "Oh my god! Ahhh!" [Laughing] 18:24 M: [Laughing more] 18:24 J: "I'm so sorry!" And he just starts ripping him a new one, basically, and... 18:28 M: [Smarmy tone] Or literally... 18:29 J: [Ignoring Megan's perving] Addy gets like, scared. Because he doesn't want to get in trouble. So he just runs. [Laughs] 18:33 C: Oh my god. [Giggles] 18:34 M: [High-society guffaw] 18:36 J: [Gasping laughter] He just runs, back to his car, and then he gets in and he's like, [Sad Addy voice] "No, my taaableeeettt." [Laughs] 18:42 M: [Laughing harder] 18:43 K: [Chuckling] 18:44 J: He left his tablet. On the park bench. Where he just was. 18:48 M: You gotta go back for the kindle! 18:50 J: Exactly. So he goes back to get his tablet, I guess he's expecting it not to be there anymore. But Jack is there...with the tablet. Because he's like, "He's gonna come back for it," right? 19:03 M: [Agreeing cackle] 19:03 J: So, he goes back to get his tablet, Jack is there, and Jack, basically, like when he ran away from him, Jack was like, "Ooooo....[smarmy chuckle]" 19:11 M: [Triumphant cackle] 19:12 C: [Laughing] He's like, "Oh, I like this." 19:14 J: [Gasping laughter] 19:15 K: Kink unlocked. 19:16 J: "What do we have here?" So he...his interest is piqued anyway. Oh, and then when Addy comes back, he can kinda see like, that Addy thinks he's attractive anyway. So pretty much, it turns into an encounter of...Jack...purposely trying to...scare him...into running away...and not coming back? So after they have this encounter, Jack hints at the fact that he...he might be interested in...hooking up with him...like doing a primal scene. In the forest with him. And like, if he wants to do that, he can come back and meet him at this picnic table. At night. And they'll do that. And he doesn't think Addy's gonna do it, because he's just trying to scare him off. But he does. [Laughs] 19:58 C: [Giggling] 19:59 M: [Sinister laughing] 20:00 J: And...uh, yeah. 20:02 K: And that's how you get murdered. 20:04 C: [Laughs] 20:04 J: My god. Yeah, it is sometimes. But this time? Hah hah. 20:08 M: He gets fucked. 20:09 J: This time...[Exaggerated Sadistic giggle] he didn't get murdered. [Giggling again] 20:13 M: [Joyous laugh] His ass got murdered. 20:15 C: Oh my god. 20:15 J: [Still giggling] Yeah-hah-hahhh... 20:17 All: [Uncontrollable laughter at their own jokes] 20:20 J: Um...yeah. There's a...there's a primal scene...they don't actually have sex, but...not the first time, but Jack spanks him, and... 20:29 M: Oooooo! 20:30 J: ...gets him with his belt, and...it's... 20:32 M: Oh damn! 20:33 J: Yeah, it's...it's really somethin'. [Little giggle] It's a very big discovery to him that he is. 21:17 M: [Background ooOOooo] 21:18 J: But he's very into it? Pretty much like, throughout this book, they hook up a couple more times, like...in the woods. It's...it's all...delicious. [Big sigh] It's all delicious, ummm...but they hook up a couple of times, and...pretty much every time they do, Jack is like...kind of escalating the intensity of it? To try to get Addy to...back down? 21:43 M: Ohhhhhh. 21:43 J: Because he's trying to like...emotionally...remain closed off? And Jack thinks...that there's no one who can...match his freak? [Giggling] 21:54 M: [Mustache-twirling chuckle] 21:56 J: And so...he's tired of being disappointed by people who think they cane. Or, by people who don't really want to. So like, all of his exes, and his most recent ex, basically like...they...they're like, "[Bummed out tone] Yeah, I guess you can spank me." 22:12 M: [Disappointed tone] Ohhhh... 22:12 C: Oh, but they're not into it. 22:14 J: They're not into it. But they're like, "I'll let you do it because I know you like doing that." 22:17 All: [Heartbroken aww's and ohh's] 22:18 J: But that's not what he wants to do. 22:19 C: [Bummed out voice] Yeah. 22:21 J: And it's really...it is really sad. He has...so many of these desires? That he has just been...tamping down...because nobody that he ever meets...is interested in doing that? 22:34 C: [More sad noises] 22:35 J: And, yeah, it is really sad, but he's like a Super Sadist. 22:39 M: [Breathy whooping] We love a Super Sadist. 22:41 J: Uh-huh, yeah. And he just has not found his perfect...masochist yet. 22:46 M: Yet! 22:46 J: Until... 22:47 K: [Pointed chuckling] 22:48 J: Until he meets Addy, so, throughout the book, each scene that they do together- Oh, and by the way, he's sure to give Addy a safe word...before they do anything the first time. 23:01 M: [Cheering for consent] Yeeessss! 23:02 J: And makes sure that he understands that he can use that. And...the aftercare in this book is also really good. Except for the first scene, because Addy is so freaked out by the fact that he enjoyed that so much, and he's so unsure about where he stands, that he basically just runs off as soon as they're done. 23:18 K: [Sad aww] 23:18 C: [Sad groan] 23:19 J: He sees Jack go into a building, and he's like, "Well, I guess we're done, okay bye, oh my god." 23:24 C: [Soft giggle] 23:25 Megan and Kit sympathetic laughing] 23:26 J: But Jack is going inside to get aftercare supplies. And when he comes back out... 23:30M: [Adoring awww] 23:31 J: ...Addy's gone. So... 23:32 M: [Pained awwwww] 23:33 J: Yeah, so, there is a little lack of aftercare in the first scene, but it's just because Addy ran...and Jack didn't vocalize that that's what he was doing. So, um...the aftercare in these books is very good. 23:45 M: [Content chuckle] 23:46 J: Jack is basically escalating every scene to try to get Addy to safe word out of it, because he's like, "There's no way someone can actually enjoy these things as much as I do..." 23:58 [Megan and Caity sad aww again] 23:58 J: "...and I'm gonna prove it." 24:00 C: Oh my goshhh. 24:01 J: But every time he tries, it backfires, because Addy's so into it! [Laughing] All: [Laughing along] 24:10 J: So...like, I dunno. Jack is like, really really mean to him, and Addy spends the entire book thinking that Jack hates him. 24:18 [Megan and Kit sadly Awwww together] 24:20 J: Because of the way that they met, you know, he just spends the whole book thinking that Jack hates him, but throughout the book, Jack is just like, doing little things for Addy. Like...his car doesn't start after the second time that they hook up, in the parking lot, and so...he has to leave it in the lot over night, which you're not really allowed to do. Like, it could get towed. And Jack is the park ranger, so he could have towed it, but he didn't. And he wakes up the next morning super early so he can go to the...auto store and buy a new battery for him. 24:50 M: [Soft awww] 24:51 J: And he replaces the battery...in the car... 24:53 K: [Affectionate sigh] 24:53 C: [Soft awww] 24:53 J: ...without telling him. Because Addy's like, freaking out. That was actually the night that Jack finds out that it's not true that he's a rich asshole. He finds out that he's actually quite...poor...and umm... 25:03 M: [Agonized awww] 25:04 C: I bet he feels bad. 25:06 J: Yeah, he's freaking out about having to hire a tow truck, because they're so expensive, and he's like, "[Smug asshole voice] Oh, why don't you just get mom and dad to pay for it?" He's being really mean. 25:14 C: [Sad noises] 25:14 J: And he's like, "What do you mean??" [Disbelieving laugh] So, they talk that out, and he's like, "[Chastised voice] Oh, well, now I feel like an ashole." So the next day he gets up super early and...and buys a new battery for the car. And replaces it. So he's like, doing little, sweet things like that throughout the book that are just like, care taking, basically, but in secret because he can't know. 25:34 K: [single chuckle] 25:35 J: And it's just so sweet! It's so sweet! And...the whole series is a lot of emotional turmoil for both of them, because, you know, again, Jack is trying to convince himself that no one could ever want what he wants, he's really hurt by past relationships that he's had, and Addy is just really unsure about if Jack genuinely is into him or not? Even though, at the end of the first book, Jack pretty much makes it clear that he is. But just like, his general attitude and meanness kind of makes Addy weary, and he's... 26:11 C: [Sad aww] 26:12 J: Yeah. It's...the whole series is just like a...it's just like a big emotional journey and it's...[dreamy voice] it's beautiful. 26:19 C: [Sweet hum] It's just so beautiful. 26:19 M: [Chuckling] 26:20 J: I loved it so much. There's like, a lot of vulnerability, and there's a lot of really sweet moments. There's like one pretty big breakup that happens that's...devastating. [Uncomfortable laughter] But...at the same time, even while devastated, I knew that it was gonna be okay? 26:42 M: [Indulgent chuckle] 26:42 J: Like, I dunno. I just...I loved...I loved the series. I really want everybody to read it, and I want to talk to you about it. 26:49 C: You've already talked me into it. I have it...I actually have it listed as one of the books I've recently added to my TBR, because I had talked to you about it cuz I was like, is it gonna be too dark for me? But, I feel confident, and I'm excited to check it out. 27:01 J: Yeah. It's so, so, so good. I really loved it, so. [Big content sigh] Yeah, that's my...that's my book that I had to tell you guys about. [Giggle] 27:11 M: [matching giggle] 27:12 K: It sounds really good. [Slow chuckle] So, I've got a few that really stood out to me this fortnight. Um, so I read Designation Prey which is by Jamie Kassel, who also wrote His Sex Therapist, which I know is quite popular. Um, that is part of a series, so Designated Prey, so...but, you can read it stand-alone. I did. It's Omegaverse, but it's not just Alpha, Beta, Omega. It's more like a continuum in this universe. Um, like, at this extreme, the Omega is a Prey Omega, so he needs like, a really dominant Alpha who will...kind of...It's not necessarily about primal play, It's more just about needing to be dominated...with someone who's like, a strict dominant. Needing quite severe pain...involved. Needing maybe some CNC, and maybe some primal as well. 28:13 M: [Giggles] 28:14 K: And essentially, also, although this is one of the most recommended books for Bio-Kink, people are not born Omegas, etc. 28:24 [One of the BRats hums in interest] 28:24 K: They are genetically modified. 28:27 J: [Interested tone] Ohhhhh... 28:28 K: They go through a process. Yeah. 28:32 J: By choice? 28:33 K: So, essentially...uhh, well...Hah...Ususally? But in this case, his father is like, really high up in the military, and he's also in the military. It's usually military people who go through the process. And he was kind of forced into it by his father. 28:49 M: [Sad aww] 28:50 K: And...yeah. So there's like a...they give him the stats as to how likely they are to become dominant, which obviously is what supposedly you want in the military, because they'll become more aggressive and blah blah blah, gain muscle. And he was only like, 8% likely to become submissive... 29:06 C: [Sad noise] 29:06 K: But obviously he became like...the most submissive. 29:08 M: [Lengthy diabolic laugh] 29:09 J: [Interested Oooo] 29:11 K: Yeah. So...he basically can't serve on the front lines, and they spend, I think it's three years, trying all of these experimental tests on him to try and turn him dominant. 29:28 J: [Sad aww] 29:29 M: [Sad noise] 29:29 K: And it's really messed with him. It's really, yeah, it's really sad. Because he doesn't want any of it. He would quite like to just leave the Army and be left alone. But his dad's a bastard. 29:38 M: [Sad crying awww] 29:38 K: Anyway...so basically the premise is, his dad has a stroke, and is in a coma, and...the guy's name is Daniel, the Omega. Daniel's doctor takes the opportunity to call in a dominant for the first time, to give Daniel what he actually needs. 29:57 M: Ooooo. 29:59 K: Yeah. 30:00 M: [Excited chuckle] 30:00 K: And so then...they basically have like, a week to try and give Daniel...the kind of domination...and like, he's also severely touch-starved. He's not been allowed any dominant at all. 30:14 [BRats make pained aww's and sad noises] 30:16 J: Saaad! 30:18 K: Yeah. 30:18 M: All these sad boys! 30:21 K: I know! Sad boys are best boys. 30:23 M: Yes, they are. 30:24 K: Yeah. So, they have a week to try and level him out, basically, by giving him what he needs. And he's never been touched before. He's not been allowed anything. 30:34 C: [Extra sad noise] 30:36 K: And they get that, and they fall in love, but in a very like, physical way. Most of their connection is physical. And then, I won't spoil, but like...well...okay, a little bit of spoiling. 30:47 [Megan and Caity laugh] 30:47 K: It becomes a second chance romance. 30:48 M: [Gleeful] Yaaaaaay! 30:49 K: Yeah. So, like there's two halves to the book, even though it's a novella. 30:53 C: [Following-the-plot Ooooohhh] 30:53 K: Yeah. The spice...is excellent. But you really feel for both characters, as well. And it's just a really, really good book. There are maybe some small issues, I'm not gonna pretend it's perfect. But it is a really good, quick read if you want something that is easy to read, and also spicy. 31:14 M: [Gremlin giggles] 31:14 K: But with plot and heart. So, yeah, I definitely recommend that one. I read...another novella. I read Touch Starved by Becca Vale, which is a taboo novella. It's Brocest. 31:29 M: [Eyebrow waggling OooOOooo] 31:30 K: So, okay, weirdly, it's been like, the military fortnight. I don't know why. 31:34 [Megan and JD laugh] 31:35 K: I'm not into military. [Chuckles once] But, you've got like, this little brother, right? A total golden retriever. But he's really hiding how vulnerable he is and how much he is struggling...to like...just keep afloat. He...works as like, a delivery driver, just on a bicycle, um...he...is renting a room that he can barely afford. He can hardly meet his bills. His parents...I think they are both dead? And he's been passed around family members growing up, but he keeps- he has this really chipper attitude. And he just hides all of his pain. 32:13 J: [Sad noises] 32:13 K: And the only person who was ever there for him was his big brother. 32:16 M: [Sad awwww] 32:17 K: But his...yeah. And he's like...he hero worships his big brother. But, in order to survive, big brother went into the Army as soon as he could. And they haven't seen each other for ten years or something. Possibly even more? 32:31 J: [Sad noise] That's sad... 32:34 K: The Army bro has no idea how much his little brother is struggling. And even though they've been pen pals all that time... 32:41 C: [Pained sad noise] 32:41 K: And they finally meet, and...at first, the little brother hides how badly he is struggling. And then the big brother finds out, and he's like, "I'm going to spoil you and protect you because nobody else ever has." 32:55 [BRats all "Yaaaaay" in sync] 32:56 K: And...yeah. [Laughs] But there's also, obviously it's Becca Vale,the spice is excellent. You get a hair-trigger virgin. But like, it adds something to the story, okay? It does. And...it's just...there's a lot of coming early. [Laughs] 33:12 M: OooOOooo! 33:12 K: There is a lot of coming early. 33:13 C: I love that. 33:15 K: He's completely touch starved. And he will come from his brother literally touching him. Like...not sexually. So that was really good. And the last book I want to talk about...is Once Bitten by A.M. Rose. 33:26 [Megan and Caity excitedly cheer] 33:27 K: Which is...[excited gremlin sound] [laugh] It is the fourth book in the Curse Breakers Inc. series. It is a second chance romance. They were in love, um... 33:40 C: [Sad noise] 33:40 K: ...when they were young. They were torn apart years ago. And now, they're finally getting the chance to see each other again as adults, but it's forbidden. It's an urban fantasy romance with a mystery sub-plot. A.M. Rose are absolutely amazing at their mystery sub-plots, and their romances. 33:59 M: Yes. 34:00 K: Yeah. All the little...little details. I never get it right, what's happening. But it's always really good how they tie it all together. 34:09 M: Yes. 34:11 K: Um...Megan and I are absolutely...we just love this series. 34:15 M: [Happy laugh] Well, and...and at the end of this one, I thought I knew the answer to one of the biggest like...um... 34:22 K: Mmmhmmm! 34:22 M: ...mysteries in the series. And I thought, like, I knew, like...I was so sure I knew the answer. And at the end of this one, we were talking and I was like, "I don't think that's...I don't think that's the answer to it." 34:32 [Kit and Megan laugh together] 34:33 J: Surpriiise! You're wrooong! 34:36 M: [Laughing again] 34:37 K: And I was trying to come up with increasingly desperate ways it could be right. 34:42 [Megan and Kit laugh more] 34:43 K: And there's always...I mean, A.M. Rose, they tend to write found family, and they throw in lots of banter...between the found family. And it's just...brilliant. A.M. Rose tend to write serous, heartbreaking, angsty romance, which this one is. And they tend to write really funny, chaotic romances as well. And I love that they have that range. But yeah, this one is... 35:06 M: Yes. 35:07 K: ...is...I cried so much. So, the...the previous two, maybe two and a half books, have been a little bit on the more angsty side. 37:54 K: Yeah 37:55 M: Yeah, and this one is...it's very little angst in it. Like, so, Sebby's character is a nurse. And he works at hospice. And he's always, like, in the previous books, has always talked about how he's just...everybody... [laughing] everybody around him dies. Like, he'll go on a date, and then his date will like, choke. Or something like that. [Laughing more] And then die! Um...and so for being somebody that's constantly surrounded by death, he's such a sweet, sunshiny character. And then...uh...Corbin is like, he's half hellhound, half witch, and he's got Crow, who is his familiar. It's a crow named Crow. [Laughing] 38:33 J: [Cracking up] 38:33 M: It's his familiar... 38:34 K: [Gremlin chuckles] 38:36 M: And he's got a murder of crows that are always in his vicinity, and a lot of the times, he sends Crow and his murder of crows to go check on Sebby. And Sebby also will feed them, and like, they'll bring him shiny trinkets and toys. And it's just...it's just so...it's such a cute, like...sweet sunshiny story. And he gets...he starts streaming because he's raising money so mental illness charities because his brother killed himself. Um, he gets a prototype VR headset, and he puts it on, and it drops him in the middle of a video game. But it's not a video game. There's several times where he talks about how he like...puts his hands on his face to try to remove the headset, and he can't feel anything except for his face. So it starts off with him camping with a bunch of friends. And then, a murderer shows up and starts murdering his friends. [Laughing again] And...the murderer...is Asher! [BRats all Yayyyyy in unison] 40:55 C: [Laughs] 40:55 M: [Unintelligible murmur] The golden retriever psycho boyfriend! 41:00 J: Oh nooooo... 41:02 K: He's just a puppy! 41:04 M: Yeah! And one thing I love about Gale Ian Tate, I mean, granted, this is only the second book of hers I've read, but, she does a really good job of writing these horrible characters that like...you kinda can't help but love? Like, feel sorry for them, or kind of...sort of root for them, because you know...life isn't black and white, right? But you do end up liking them anyway. 41:45 M: Exactly. So then I went from that to reading Ugly. Which was...the start of the tears. 41:51 K: [Diabolic chuckle] 41:52 M: Omegaverse, you know, lots of hurt comfort, and then just devolved into like...mad fucking, right? Like just non-stop... 42:02 J: Yeah, hell yeah. 42:03 M: ...heat, rut, like...all of the things that come with his books. But this one, the main character, he's got no self-esteem and he's unhoused, uhh...and so I'm sobbing through that. 42:14 J: Aww...this is the week of the Sad Boys. 42:16 M: [Agreeing laugh] Burke is the other main character who's the Alpha. And he goes to Burke's pub a lot because he'll like, offer to help Burke around the pub in exchange for a free meal. 42:29 C: [Sad awww] 42:29 M: And Burke always helps him. And Emerson is the Omega's name. Burke also like, has scars on his face from an accident. Which, if you've read, is so so sweet and cozy.And they're not super horny books? There is intimacy in it, but it's not like...it's not super kinky or anything like that, and...um, these books? Like, it is...just like Alice Winters where it's like, unhinged and crazy, there are moments where you actually see that they...they do have feelings and they care about each other, even if it is super fast-paced, and insta-love. 57:03 K: Yeah. 57:03 C: They have genuine feelings. And it's cute, cuz in the end, it does and with an engagement epilogue. And it's a fun series. This is the same couple for all three books. And it's like, Liam, who is the...he's like, a serial killer who works as a detective for a police department. I think it's April 24th. So, Caleb is from Whit's point of view. So...Whit is from Caleb's point of view. Which, he's the himbo golden retriever, and Whit is the black cat...um, kind of reluctant partner. And so I'm excited to kind of see...he's the grumpy on. So I'm kind of excited to see what his feeling are on this himbo who just decides that he's gay now. [Laughing] And...um...how he handles that.
