- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday.
- 0:14It's the 23rd of October. And thank you for tapping on
- 0:18play and saying come on, Sean, come in.
- 0:20Let's read a chapter of God's Word together because something
- 0:23went very wrong yesterday. Yes, yesterday's the ending of
- 0:26the reading. I don't know whether many of you
- 0:28heard the ending of thought. Hang on, there's been a
- 0:31technical glitch. Something's gone terribly wrong.
- 0:33Sean just cut out halfway through like an opening sentence
- 0:37to a new paragraph. But that, in their wisdom, is
- 0:40where the editors of this book chose to put the new chapter.
- 0:44So I am just reading the word the way it comes to me.
- 0:49And we made it through that long list of exiles who returned to
- 0:53Jerusalem, which is in fact pretty much bang on identical
- 0:58almost to the list that we went through in Ezra not long ago.
- 1:03So we returned to the story where we left it with Ezra, and
- 1:06now we read it from a slightly different angle, through a
- 1:08different viewpoint, this time from the viewpoint of Nehemiah
- 1:12as we see what goes on. And I am going to start with
- 1:15that last half sentence of Chapter 7 before we begin
- 1:19today's reading, just so that it all makes sense as we read it
- 1:22together. You ready?
- 1:25Let us hear what is going to happen to God's people once they
- 1:29have rebuilt that wall, confirm that God's people had returned,
- 1:34and then set themselves up to live as people of God.
- 1:38So let's read together Nehemiah chapter 8.
- 1:51In October, when the Israelites had settled in their towns, all
- 1:56the people assembled with a unified purpose at the square
- 1:59just inside the Watergate. They asked Ezra the scribe to
- 2:03bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had given
- 2:07for Israel to obey. So on October 8th, Ezra the
- 2:11priest brought the Book of the Law before the assembly, which
- 2:15included the men and women and all the children old enough to
- 2:18understand. He faced the square just inside
- 2:21the Watergate from early morning until noon and read aloud to
- 2:25everyone who could understand. All the people listened closely
- 2:29to the Book of the Law. Ezra the scribe stood on a high
- 2:34wooden platform that had been made for the occasion.
- 2:37To his right stood Matataya Shema, Anaya, Uriah, Hilkiah and
- 2:44Marseille. To his left stood Padaya,
- 2:49Michel, Malkajah, Hashem, Hashbadana, Zechariah and
- 2:54Meshalam. Ezra stood on the platform in
- 2:58full view of all the people. When they saw him open the book,
- 3:02they all rose to their feet. Then Ezra praised the Lord, the
- 3:07great God, and all the people chanted Amen, Amen as they
- 3:13lifted their hands. Then they bowed down and
- 3:16worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
- 3:20The Levites, Joshua, Barney, Sharabaya, Jaemin, Akab,
- 3:26Shevataya, Hodaya, Marcia, Kalita, Azariah, Josebad, Hanan,
- 3:34and Pelaya then instructed the people in the law while everyone
- 3:38remained in their places. They read from the book of the
- 3:42Law of God and clearly explained the meaning of what was being
- 3:46read, helping the people understand each passage.
- 3:50Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the
- 3:55Levites who were interpreting for the people said to them,
- 3:59don't mourn or weep on such a day as this, for today is a
- 4:04sacred day before the Lord your God.
- 4:07For the people had all been weeping as they listened to the
- 4:10words of the law. And Nehemiah continued, go and
- 4:14celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and
- 4:19share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared.
- 4:22This is a sacred day before our Lord.
- 4:25Don't be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your
- 4:29strength. And the Levites, too, quieted
- 4:33the people, telling them, harsh, don't weep, for this is a sacred
- 4:38day. So the people went away to eat
- 4:42and drink at a festive meal, to share gifts of food, and to
- 4:45celebrate with great joy, because they had heard God's
- 4:49words and understood them. On October nine, the family
- 4:53leaders of all the people, together with the priests and
- 4:56Levites, met with Ezra the scribe to go over the law in
- 4:59greater detail. As they studied the law, they
- 5:03discovered that the Lord had commanded through Moses that the
- 5:06Israelites should live in shelters during the festival to
- 5:10be held that month. He had said that a proclamation
- 5:13should be made throughout their towns and in Jerusalem telling
- 5:17the people to go to the hills to get branches from olive, wild
- 5:21olive, Myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees.
- 5:25They were to use these branches to make shelters in which they
- 5:29would live during the festival, as prescribed in the lore.
- 5:33So the people went out and cut branches and used them to build
- 5:36shelters on the roofs of their houses, in the courtyards, in
- 5:40the courtyards of God's temple, or in the square just inside the
- 5:44Watergate and the Ephraim Gate. So everyone who had returned
- 5:49from captivity lived in these shelters during the festival,
- 5:53and they were all filled with great joy.
- 5:57The Israelites had not celebrated like this since the
- 5:59days of Joshua, son of Nun. Ezra read from the book of the
- 6:05Law of God on each of the seven days of the festival.
- 6:09Then on the 8th day, they held a solemn assembly, as was required
- 6:14by law. Ah, Lord, thank you for your
- 6:26word. Thank you that in it is this
- 6:29truth and this clarity of your message to us.
- 6:34And we hear the reaction of these people long ago when they
- 6:37heard your word after not hearing it for so long.
- 6:41Their response was to weep, for they knew that their people had
- 6:46sinned and turned against you. But here we hear your words of
- 6:51comfort given through Nehemiah and the Levites, telling them
- 6:56not to weep, but to rejoice and to go away and to celebrate
- 7:01together, making sure that they look after those who don't have
- 7:05enough. Oh Lord, thank you for the
- 7:10richness and clarity of your message for us.
- 7:14But for more than that, when we hear your message for us, we can
- 7:18be filled with joy to go and celebrate.
- 7:22Celebrate all you have done for us, for your faithfulness for
- 7:25us, and that as we celebrate, we always have an eye for those who
- 7:30don't have what they need so that we can provide for them as
- 7:34well. Thank you for all you've done
- 7:37for us, for when we were lost to our sin and without the
- 7:41provision to save us. You sent us your Son, and you
- 7:48saved us, and you invited us to your party.
- 7:53Our Lord, continue to shape us. Shape us with hearts of joy and
- 7:59hearts of service. You're a wonderful God with
- 8:04goodness beyond comprehension. And we praise you.
- 8:07And we pray all of this in the loving name of Jesus, Amen.
