- 1:01That sounds amazing.
- 1:03The Christmas horror film Sheld,
- 1:05and co-produced films like A Night of the Living Dead,
- 1:08The Final Act, and New Blood Awakening.
- 1:11Michael Co-host, the podcast, All Too Real To.
- 1:15A look at the Wild and Wacky Realm of Pop Culture.
- 1:19Welcome to the show, Michael.
- 1:21- Thank you, thanks for having me.
- 1:22- Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:23That was quite the introduction
- 1:25and I wanna know more about Pi Day Die Day immediately.
- 1:28(laughing)
- 1:30- Good thing is, is you can actually watch it right now
- 1:32on Toobie.
- 1:33- Ooh, it's on Tubi, that's amazing.
- 1:36- Yeah, it's a, we shot it back in, like, mid-2010,
- 1:41around there and it's a film that takes place
- 1:45on Pi Day on March 14th, where small Ohio town
- 1:49and a bunch of murder start happening
- 1:52and it's up to the high school math teacher
- 1:56and a couple of detectives to try to figure out,
- 2:00you know, who the killer is and what's going on.
- 2:04- That's amazing.
- 2:05- Sadly recently, our star of the movie
- 2:07who played the high school teacher passed away.
- 2:09So yeah, he was only 50 years old and passed away,
- 2:13I don't know where.
- 2:14So one of my best friends, he was a really good guy,
- 2:16Mark Klein, his name, so yeah,
- 2:18but you can check that out on Toobie.
- 2:19As an honor to Mark, I recommend doing it.
- 2:22So yeah, it's a really,
- 2:23Pi Day's in a couple days from when we're recording this,
- 2:25so we're gonna have to watch it.
- 2:28- It's a, you know, it's a real low budget,
- 2:31so don't go in expecting anything spectacular.
- 2:34- I love a good low budget fest, I love that.
- 2:37- That's amazing.
- 2:39I saw Christmas horror and I was immediately interested.
- 2:43I made a stew and episode actually about Christmas horror,
- 2:47so that really speaks to me on that note as well.
- 2:51- Shelf, Shelf is the follow up.
- 2:53We're trying to get that on Toobie soon,
- 2:56but that is a movie about a little elf on a shelf dial sort of thing.
- 3:01(laughing)
- 3:02The horror comedy as well,
- 3:03and it paralyzes a family little girl and mom and dad
- 3:08and everything, and then there's a psychiatrist
- 3:09and everything trying to figure out what's wrong.
- 3:11And you know, I feel like most parents
- 3:16who participate in the elf on a shelf, Christmas,
- 3:21Jabaka would really love that Christmas movie.
- 3:24- They probably feel like the elf terrorizes them anyway
- 3:28'cause they have to wake up and remember to move it every day.
- 3:31- Yeah, literally.
- 3:32Some of the ones that you see on TikTok are like,
- 3:34"We made a production.
- 3:36"We had to clean the whole kitchen after this."
- 3:38- Oh my god.
- 3:38- They're quite crazy, so for any parents,
- 3:42couldn't do it.
- 3:43- Yeah, I think it's good.
- 3:44It's good, I would never do that.
- 3:45Yeah, my best friend, Lindsay LaForest,
- 3:49wrote both of those movies too, so any of the humor,
- 3:52I will give credit to her, so.
- 3:54- That's awesome.
- 3:55- Yeah.
- 3:56- I love that.
- 3:57So how did you get started in your passion
- 4:00of making films?
- 4:01I mean, what kind of sparked that interest in you?
- 4:04Was it from a young age?
- 4:05- Yeah, I mean, I've always loved movie and theater
- 4:07and stuff of that nature since I was a little kid.
- 4:11Probably, I mean, like, I'm in my 40s,
- 4:14and when I was a kid, I would watch American movie classics,
- 4:17which is now AMC.
- 4:19And there were old movies on there,
- 4:20and I'd watch those all the time.
- 4:21Like, I remember one night watching Rubble Without A Cause,
- 4:24and that kind of just like blew my mind,
- 4:27and I was like, okay, I need to do that somehow.
- 4:30I don't know what that is, but I need to do that,
- 4:32'cause I was probably about nine years old when I saw it,
- 4:34and I was like, yep, that's something I need to do.
- 4:37And I had a little like, real cheap video camera as a kid,
- 4:41and we made movies in my backyard and stuff
- 4:44that, you know, I don't know where they are now,
- 4:46but the first one was like a horror movie.
- 4:48I'm not even into horror movies,
- 4:49but we did a horror movie when I was a kid
- 4:51called the Unknown Paperboy,
- 4:52and I played the Paperboy,
- 4:54and then my cousin played the Paperboy,
- 4:55and both of us have completely different frames, body frames.
- 4:59Just no continuity at all.
- 5:01I love that.
- 5:03That's amazing.
- 5:07Very cool.
- 5:08Yeah.
- 5:09And so what was the first film that you professionally
- 5:12directed or produced?
- 5:14The side's obviously the Paperboy.
- 5:16Hey, hey, hey.
- 5:17Oh, and probably, like when I got into college,
- 5:20I started doing things, and I probably,
- 5:24I mean, I made some like real short little films and stuff,
- 5:27and I made short films,
- 5:28I mean, most of them are short films in college,
- 5:30and probably the first one was a weird movie
- 5:32called The Book of Life,
- 5:33where it was about a guy missing in the woods,
- 5:37and his friends go off to look for him,
- 5:40and he, it was like real surreal and weird,
- 5:43and kind of, I was told it was David lynching in,
- 5:45but I didn't even know what that meant at the time,
- 5:48'cause I hadn't seen a lynch movie.
- 5:50Thank you, I guess.
- 5:52Yeah.
- 5:53And then, yeah, it was like, he goes into the woods
- 5:56and finds a book that supposedly has the meaning of life in it,
- 5:59and then, and it's all this time in there,
- 6:02and yeah, it was, it was bad, but yeah, it was.
- 6:06I'm sure it was amazing.
- 6:07That's awesome.
- 6:08[LAUGHTER]
- 6:10I love that.
- 6:10So it's interesting.
- 6:11You said you're not a big horror fan,
- 6:13but we've made a few horror films.
- 6:15I kind of brought you into that.
- 6:17I mean, I like horror.
- 6:19It's not that I don't like it.
- 6:20It's just not my favorite genre.
- 6:22I don't even know if I really have a favorite genre,
- 6:24but it's, I think I like more of like, you know,
- 6:29what I want to go into now, because I just
- 6:31wrote a screenplay that's kind of a coming of age film
- 6:34that takes place in the '90s, and with some teenagers,
- 6:38I don't want to get away too much else.
- 6:40But that's kind of more of my like, when I watch movies,
- 6:44that, or like I really like, you know,
- 6:46movies based on true stories and stuff.
- 6:48So that too.
- 6:49But I don't know.
- 6:51It's just horror kind of just fell into my lap,
- 6:54because around in Toledo, where I lived,
- 6:57I lived, I don't live in Toledo anymore,
- 6:59but where I lived, there was the film community.
- 7:02Everybody was making horror movie.
- 7:04So it was just easy to like get on a crew to that,
- 7:07and then eventually we filmed a movie at my best friend's
- 7:11house, and she had never written anything.
- 7:13And she's just like, I could write a movie,
- 7:15and I'm like, I'll go for it.
- 7:17And then so we made the two that I directed.
- 7:19So yeah.
- 7:20It's a real Matthew McConaughey moving into more films, right?
- 7:26Everybody starts in horror.
- 7:27So--
- 7:28Oh, yeah.
- 7:28Yeah.
- 7:29We talked about that too on one of our episodes
- 7:31was how many famous actors and producers have
- 7:35gotten their start in horror movies.
- 7:37And how it's like, horror doesn't usually
- 7:39get the respect that it deserves sometimes,
- 7:41because there's some masterpieces out there.
- 7:44I like a lot of horror movies, but like I said,
- 7:47it's not my favorite genre, but it's
- 7:50they're easy to make to a lot of time.
- 7:52They're fun.
- 7:53It's not anything in horror is ever taken too seriously,
- 7:57so it's kind of easy.
- 7:59People will forgive mistakes in horror more
- 8:01than they would in like a drama.
- 8:04So you are also the host of a podcast called All Too Real Two.
- 8:09Tell us a little bit about that.
- 8:11What do you guys talk about in the show?
- 8:13It's kind of just like a catch all pop culture show,
- 8:16probably similar to yours.
- 8:17But we talked-- we started out--
- 8:19it's a sequel to another podcast.
- 8:21That's why the two--
- 8:22I was wondering what the two was there.
- 8:23OK.
- 8:24We used to have a podcast called All Too Real,
- 8:27where we watched movies based on true stories.
- 8:30But we got bored with that.
- 8:31So we created a sequel podcast to do on the side.
- 8:35And then we just stopped doing the original podcast.
- 8:37Just stuck with the name.
- 8:40We kind of started out originally doing movies
- 8:42that were like directive video sequels, like Honey
- 8:45We Shrunk ourselves or--
- 8:47Oh my god.
- 8:48I remember that movie.
- 8:50Like, "2/3/2, Jingle All the Way, 2, both starring."
- 8:53We can't get any of the original cast on there.
- 8:58We have an ongoing hatred towards Larry the Cable Guy
- 9:01on our podcast because--
- 9:02Oh my god.
- 9:03It's movies.
- 9:04Yeah.
- 9:05But-- or Dan Whitney was--
- 9:08who's Daniel Whitney is his real name.
- 9:10But my co-host is named Matthew Haas.
- 9:15He goes by Sesame and Carter on our podcast, though,
- 9:18because he just is him.
- 9:20And Don--
- 9:21Yeah.
- 9:22Yeah.
- 9:23Yeah.
- 9:24We need nicknames, Olivia.
- 9:25I know.
- 9:26We're just out here being boring.
- 9:28We're going to live in our names.
- 9:32Sesame and Carter.
- 9:33Sesame and Carter.
- 9:34Our early episodes were--
- 9:37He went by his real name, and then eventually he just decided,
- 9:39hey, I'm going to change my name.
- 9:40And I'm like, OK, you go.
- 9:42I'd go for it.
- 9:43And Carter, isn't that like the old disk
- 9:47we used to get as kids?
- 9:49Like the--
- 9:50That's what you're talking about?
- 9:51Yeah.
- 9:52Oh my gosh.
- 9:53That might have been before your time, Olivia.
- 9:55It was like an encyclopedia, and you could get it
- 9:58like a DVD or a disk and put it in your computer.
- 10:01And that's how you research stuff.
- 10:04It was like, whoa.
- 10:05But not online.
- 10:07Yeah.
- 10:08You had to buy the disk.
- 10:09And you couldn't edit it.
- 10:11It was kind of like an encyclopedia books that are encyclopedia,
- 10:14but it was a disk.
- 10:14Yeah.
- 10:15Yeah.
- 10:15That's amazing.
- 10:16Yeah.
- 10:16That's amazing.
- 10:17Shana could tell by the glazed-over look in my--
- 10:20Yeah, you were like, yeah, no idea that it is.
- 10:24The head was nodding.
- 10:25It's not.
- 10:25You can't tell on a podcast, but there was nodding.
- 10:29That's when the age gap comes out just a little bit.
- 10:32Just a little bit.
- 10:33So you mentioned making a movie about kids in the '90s.
- 10:38And you also mentioned during your 40s,
- 10:41that's kind of when you grew up watching pop culture.
- 10:44What were some of the stuff that you grew up watching
- 10:46and that you were into?
- 10:47Well, I mean, if we go into when I was in high school
- 10:49and stuff, it was like Kevin Smith movies and things
- 10:52of that nature that got me--
- 10:55I'm friends with a lot of people that are in his universe now,
- 10:58just randomly.
- 10:59I interviewed a couple of people from his films.
- 11:02Yeah, it's interesting.
- 11:07That kind of indie films is what kind of got me going back then.
- 11:11But I mean, there was also when I was really young,
- 11:14I was like Star Wars and stuff like that.
- 11:18A lot of sci-fi.
- 11:19I was really into sci-fi as a kid.
- 11:21So I was basically under the nobody's eye too.
- 11:24So sci-fi.
- 11:25[LAUGHTER]
- 11:27Well, that is the perfect segue then,
- 11:29because we are going to talk about a sci-fi show that was made
- 11:35definitely before I was born.
- 11:371983's V, V, the original series.
- 11:41Is that what we call it?
- 11:42Or V, the mini series?
- 11:43V, the mini series.
- 11:44Because then there's the final battle
- 11:46and then the TV series after that.
- 11:47That's right.
- 11:49So let's take a quick break and get into some sci-fi, 80s,
- 11:53nerd dumb.
- 11:59Welcome back.
- 12:00So as we mentioned, Michael is joining us today
- 12:02to talk about V. In 1983, NBC Television,
- 12:06mini series about an invasion of seemingly friendly aliens
- 12:10here on Earth.
- 12:12The two-part mini series was the second most popular program
- 12:15the week it was released and was followed by a sequel like Michael
- 12:18mentioned called V, the final battle, which
- 12:21came out a year later in 1984.
- 12:24So now that I watched V, the mini series, really
- 12:29want to watch the final battle.
- 12:32I loved it.
- 12:34I did too.
- 12:35I hadn't seen it in decades.
- 12:38Yeah, so you watched it all the way through before.
- 12:41This was your second viewing then?
- 12:43Yeah, probably.
- 12:44I mean, I think-- so OK, with my age-- and I'm 47.
- 12:48So when it came out, I was probably about five or six.
- 12:50Yes, that you were a kid.
- 12:52Theygly remembered my parents watching it
- 12:55and freaking out when you could see the aliens being revealed
- 13:01and--
- 13:01Yes.
- 13:02Yeah, I know.
- 13:03--and nightmares for the longest time after that.
- 13:06Yeah.
- 13:07They're creepy.
- 13:09They're creepy as hell.
- 13:10It is really interesting to see how that piece of media
- 13:16really kind of comes into popular day today.
- 13:19When I was watching it, I was like, oh, is this where
- 13:21lizard people started?
- 13:23Like, amongst-- the lizard people are among us.
- 13:26Like, that kind of seed and kernel within conspiracy theories.
- 13:30Like, did it originate here?
- 13:31Was that an original idea within the show?
- 13:35That's something in the Los Angeles sewer system.
- 13:38I don't remember it there.
- 13:39I feel like I learned the backstory of that at one point.
- 13:42I don't remember what it was.
- 13:44The reason-- there is a conspiracy theory that
- 13:46is really popular by a British former sportscaster.
- 13:51And soccer player named David Ike about people usually
- 13:55hire up in society like the queen or the president's.
- 13:59Those are people wearing fake faces and stuff like that.
- 14:02Yes.
- 14:03But I guess the conspiracy theory actually
- 14:06dates back to about the 1700s originally.
- 14:09So yeah, but I don't know the whole history of it
- 14:12that I was reading a little bit on it the other day.
- 14:14So yeah.
- 14:16I still feel like it's a thing.
- 14:18I remember even when Hillary Clinton
- 14:19was running for president, people look,
- 14:21you see her being a lizard person.
- 14:23She's so stupid.
- 14:26Yeah, there was--
- 14:27see, you're thinking Hillary Clinton.
- 14:29I was like, there was this Justin Bieber-like-faked video
- 14:33of him turning into a lizard person in the 2010s.
- 14:38So yeah.
- 14:40So everyone-- everyone's a lizard person.
- 14:42Everyone's a lizard person.
- 14:43I can't help her.
- 14:44Anybody except for Donald Trump or something.
- 14:47But yeah.
- 14:48Oh yeah, no.
- 14:48He's perfect.
- 14:49He could never possibly be a lizard person.
- 14:51He could never lizard.
- 14:52Never lizard.
- 14:52No.
- 14:54So people who have-- I had never heard of V before.
- 14:58We decided we were going to watch the show and discuss it.
- 15:01So for other people like me, who might not have heard of it
- 15:04before, it begins when a massive alien spacecraft of peers
- 15:08over multiple cities worldwide.
- 15:11The aliens called visitors--
- 15:13or that's what people kind of colloquially start calling them--
- 15:16look human, but wear sunglasses and speak with kind of a weird
- 15:20inner vocal effect in their throats.
- 15:23They are led by their supreme commander, Diana,
- 15:26who is hot as hell.
- 15:28Oh my god.
- 15:29Yeah.
- 15:29Beautiful.
- 15:30What a fox.
- 15:32Even eating that guinea pig, I was like, I'm
- 15:34like, I'd let you eat me.
- 15:37You can eat my guinea pig any day, Diana.
- 15:39Listen.
- 15:40Sorry, Michael.
- 15:44Oh, no, you're little.
- 15:45This is us.
- 15:46This is us.
- 15:49So the visitors claim to come in peace, seeking chemicals
- 15:52and minerals to save their dying planet.
- 15:55And initially, everybody's like, oh my god, the visitor is
- 15:58yay, and there's action figures made.
- 16:00And slowly but surely, they start to take over the government
- 16:06and take over the media, brainwash people.
- 16:11The visitors are not our friends.
- 16:13You guys?
- 16:14No.
- 16:15Yeah.
- 16:15No.
- 16:16Well, and I think it's important to kind of say,
- 16:19like how they got us to believe them, just knowing what we
- 16:23know today about the way that we embrace new cultures is they
- 16:28come in and say, like, if you give us resources,
- 16:30we will cure you of all of your problems, all of your resource
- 16:35issues, help you heal the earth, help you cure diseases.
- 16:39And so they really kind of promise, like, hey, we have all the
- 16:41answers.
- 16:42And we'll give them to you if you just give us some of your resources
- 16:46from your factories.
- 16:47I mean, they make it seem like it's going to be a peaceful kind
- 16:51of quid pro quo situation.
- 16:54But I think it's just-- it speaks obviously in allegory
- 16:59for just the rise of fascism, right?
- 17:01And they even have the grandfather who
- 17:03was a survivor of the Holocaust, who
- 17:06can see his dumb ass grandson--
- 17:10God, that grandson's the worst character.
- 17:12I hate it, though.
- 17:14Oh, I don't even remember his stupid name, but he was the dumb--
- 17:17The dumb jock.
- 17:18The dumb jock.
- 17:19Daniel, I think it was.
- 17:21Yeah.
- 17:21Daniel, what a dumb jock name.
- 17:23I'm just kidding.
- 17:23If your name is Daniel, we love you.
- 17:25Love you, Daniel.
- 17:28Join Patreon, Daniel.
- 17:30His grandfather has to watch his grandson join this fascist
- 17:34movement.
- 17:36And like, he's basically seeing history repeat itself
- 17:40from Naziism that he survived and that heroingly
- 17:44tells his wife die.
- 17:46I got a little misty when he was talking about his wife dying
- 17:49in the Holocaust.
- 17:51And I mean, it's basically--
- 17:52he was part of the visitor youth, which
- 17:55is the Hitler youth.
- 17:57He's exactly.
- 17:58So yeah.
- 17:59And even their symbol looks quite a bit like a swastika.
- 18:04And the uniforms are very like Utah.
- 18:06It's Harry, and I guess is the word.
- 18:08And it's very much symbolic.
- 18:11I mean, in Grandpa Clark's at the minute he sees them.
- 18:14He's like, nah.
- 18:15That was reading though.
- 18:17I was reading something, Robert England, who
- 18:20was better known as Freddie Krueger.
- 18:21He was the visitors in this, and he was Willie.
- 18:25And he said that he was at a convention.
- 18:29And somebody came up to him, and they
- 18:30had that symbol tattooed on their chest.
- 18:32Oh, no.
- 18:34And he had to try to explain to them.
- 18:35He's just like, yeah, you might not
- 18:37want to do that.
- 18:39Yeah, that's not what you think it is.
- 18:42It reminds me of when people were getting the death mark
- 18:44or whatever from Harry Potter.
- 18:46And I'm like, it's kind of like a Nazi symbol.
- 18:50Yeah, like a magical Nazi.
- 18:53Maybe you don't stop me that.
- 18:56Oh, man.
- 18:57I did like Robert England as Willie.
- 18:59And Willie was definitely like--
- 19:00you got a soft spot for him.
- 19:02So it was kind of nice to see that some of the visitors
- 19:06were trying to break away from the, you know,
- 19:10authority or the government and stuff
- 19:12that they didn't agree with.
- 19:13Like the one visitor who was helping our main character,
- 19:16Mike, throughout the movie.
- 19:18For the mini series, I guess.
- 19:20Yeah.
- 19:21It was really interesting to see how they kind of--
- 19:25like, I was just analyzing like the 1980s character tropes
- 19:30within the humans as well.
- 19:32And I think that one of the things they really had
- 19:35was like the career woman.
- 19:37It was just like so self-serving.
- 19:40And like, is only looking to move herself forward
- 19:44versus like the angelical, like mom, who just wants
- 19:48to save everyone.
- 19:49I thought that juxtaposition.
- 19:50Whereas now, like, if they adapted it
- 19:53and I know they did it in the 2000s,
- 19:55like, would that be such a, you know,
- 19:57clear, like self-serving business woman trope,
- 20:00like the with the reporter?
- 20:02Yeah, it's like the--
- 20:03I think the adaptation in 2011, the like spokesperson
- 20:11for the aliens is a man.
- 20:13Oh, interesting.
- 20:14So yeah, I think Scott Wolf plays like a reporter in it
- 20:18from what I remember reading.
- 20:19I only watched it once or something when it was on.
- 20:21I would didn't really get into it.
- 20:23So yeah.
- 20:24I don't even remember it being on.
- 20:25But I definitely want to continue at the '80s series.
- 20:28I'm like, I got to see what happens next.
- 20:30I do-- I think that's interesting, Olivia.
- 20:32Like, there are some intense stereotypes in this movie,
- 20:37right?
- 20:38There's intense racial stereotypes.
- 20:40And I think it's just a product of its time being in 1983.
- 20:45But it was still so progressive for its time
- 20:49and what it was speaking to.
- 20:50I was like, I'll give it some grace
- 20:52for some of these more like moment.
- 20:56Yeah.
- 20:58The two African-American brothers were the ones kind of,
- 21:00like, jive talking, I guess.
- 21:02And then the other one's kind of smart doctor.
- 21:05Like, it can't be those two, I guess.
- 21:08No, it has to be one or the other.
- 21:09And then like the Hispanic Gardener guy
- 21:13with his cowboy hat on the whole time.
- 21:15Yeah.
- 21:17But I think what they're speaking to
- 21:20and what they're getting at in the series
- 21:22is so progressive for the '80s and something
- 21:26that needed to be heard.
- 21:28So I was like, all right.
- 21:29Sadly, really, really holds up.
- 21:31And a lot of the things that are going on now,
- 21:33where you've got like these people
- 21:35that were just disappeared on there.
- 21:37And then recently we had
- 21:40McMood, Colliel, a protester from Columbia
- 21:45who just was disappeared.
- 21:48And eventually, but you know, things like that
- 21:50are just happening with our government.
- 21:52So I meant to mention all the concentration camps,
- 21:56but that's what they are.
- 21:57Yeah.
- 21:58No, 100%.
- 21:59I think it's sad how much
- 22:01it stands up today.
- 22:03And like I remember Mark was on,
- 22:05or I'm sorry, Mike.
- 22:06The actor's name is Marcus Characters Mike.
- 22:09Mike was on the ship at one point and was like,
- 22:11how did you guys even let somebody
- 22:13that terrible get into power in the first place?
- 22:16And he, the visitor was like,
- 22:20I don't know, people didn't realize it at first
- 22:23or he made a lot of great promises
- 22:25or he had a big personality and was charismatic.
- 22:28And I was like, no, that's weird.
- 22:30Sounds a little familiar.
- 22:32But no, yeah, the people going missing
- 22:33is definitely a little on the nose right now.
- 22:37And it's really scary.
- 22:39I mean, I know for me,
- 22:39I'm very outspoken about progressive issues.
- 22:42Oh, same.
- 22:43Us too.
- 22:45I knew we'd like you, Mike.
- 22:46Okay.
- 22:48I'm just really worried.
- 22:49I'm like, okay, should I say any of this stuff
- 22:52I'm lying anymore or not?
- 22:53Because who knows?
- 22:55But yeah, I'm gonna still do it regardless.
- 22:58If they want to put me in a camp, go ahead.
- 23:00I mean, and it just, it's like the letter in the movie
- 23:03that I keep calling it a movie,
- 23:05but it felt like you know, just two movies,
- 23:07the way we watched it.
- 23:08The letter that Grandpa wrote and was like,
- 23:12you guys need to stand up and fight.
- 23:14This is what's right.
- 23:15When his granddaughter was like,
- 23:17I don't know, I don't, this seems dangerous.
- 23:19We were already kidnapped.
- 23:20We got away barely with our lives.
- 23:22And it was like, no, I mean,
- 23:24it's like that famous quote and I'm gonna butcher it,
- 23:27but it's like, first they came for the communists
- 23:30and I didn't stand up 'cause I'm not a communist
- 23:32and then they came for the Catholics
- 23:34and I didn't stand up 'cause I'm not a Catholic.
- 23:36And then they came for me
- 23:37and there was no one left to stand up for me, right?
- 23:40So.
- 23:41- It's funny too.
- 23:43Like even with that, they censored that poem
- 23:44when it first came out.
- 23:45It was originally, they said socialists
- 23:47instead of communists.
- 23:49- Interesting.
- 23:50- 'Cause they didn't want to put any emphasis
- 23:52on communism until they needed to.
- 23:54Like basically they already were setting up
- 23:56the whole idea for the Red Scar,
- 23:58which is another thing that's very similar
- 24:00to what's happening here.
- 24:01So yeah. - Yeah.
- 24:02- Yeah.
- 24:03- That's so interesting.
- 24:04So have you watched the rest of the mini series?
- 24:07Did you want, or the final battle?
- 24:10- I probably did.
- 24:11I just don't remember it.
- 24:13So yeah. - Yeah.
- 24:14I'd be very interested to see how they wrap it all up
- 24:17and if they continue with like the political allegory
- 24:22and if it's, you know, how did they save it?
- 24:26Maybe we could take some notes.
- 24:27(laughing)
- 24:28How did they stop fascism?
- 24:30- I was doing some research on like what it happened.
- 24:34Like Kenneth Johnson who created,
- 24:36he wrote the mini series and created it.
- 24:38He was, he had creative differences with them
- 24:42for the final battle. - Yeah.
- 24:44- And were taken off the project.
- 24:46They basically rewrote a lot of the stuff.
- 24:50They still had to give him credit,
- 24:52but he decided to change his name to Lilian Weezer
- 24:55for some reason.
- 24:56- Interesting, fan name.
- 24:58He went on to create the series afterwards though, right?
- 25:02- He still gets creative credit,
- 25:03but he had nothing to do with it.
- 25:05- Interesting.
- 25:06Did he come back for the 2009 one?
- 25:08- He gets creative credit,
- 25:09but he had nothing to do with it.
- 25:10- Nothing with that one either.
- 25:11- He's like, he's in his 80s now
- 25:13and he's still trying to do a movie remake of the original.
- 25:17- He's said it was, it was a good idea.
- 25:20I'm gonna keep it going.
- 25:21- It was a good idea, but come on bro.
- 25:23- Come on.
- 25:24- I know there were some comic books as well,
- 25:26but I didn't go a chance to pick it.
- 25:28- So what I understand, the TV series
- 25:30just was real lower budget.
- 25:32And it was turned into kind of like a,
- 25:36like they said dynasty with aliens.
- 25:39Like it was like,
- 25:40like a nighttime soap opera, but with an alien.
- 25:42- Oh god.
- 25:43I definitely got that.
- 25:45Like between the love interests
- 25:47and the main guy in it,
- 25:49where he's just like this Casanova,
- 25:51who's like he was making everyone fall in love with him.
- 25:56And yeah, I think that one of the most interesting things
- 26:01about this show and how prophetic it was
- 26:04was them really just straight going for the scientists.
- 26:07And of course we, we all lived through 2020.
- 26:10We've seen it continue into other things,
- 26:14but it was really, it wasn't necessarily people
- 26:18that could physically overthrow them
- 26:20or physically fight them,
- 26:22but mentally would ask questions.
- 26:24And it really just kind of like spoke to this target demographic
- 26:29that people would go after,
- 26:32which are people who are making educated questioning
- 26:35and things like that.
- 26:36- Yeah, anybody willing to stand up and like fight back
- 26:39and actually question the things that they see
- 26:41around them for sure.
- 26:42- And it's like right now,
- 26:43we're they're trying to dismantle
- 26:44at the Department of Education.
- 26:46And we've stuck up a thing where everybody just,
- 26:49you know, somehow thinks that Dr. Fauci was an evil person.
- 26:53- Am I right?
- 26:54- I had a, I mean, it's just yesterday at my work,
- 26:58we have like a meeting every night
- 26:59and there's this older guy, he's like in his 70s.
- 27:02And he started saying some outlandish COVID conspiracies.
- 27:07I'm like, dude, it's 2025.
- 27:09- Yeah, man, get a new conspiracy, come on.
- 27:13- Maybe don't though, 'cause I don't want to see
- 27:15what they come up with next.
- 27:17(laughing)
- 27:18- This guy has all these alt right conspiracy
- 27:22of the party. - He's a gate bullshit.
- 27:24Yeah.
- 27:25- But he was, he scared me because I corrected him
- 27:29and he was yelling at me.
- 27:32Like I literally felt like a little kid all of a sudden.
- 27:36I was just like,
- 27:37- I hate that feeling.
- 27:38I hate that. - He got that crazy eyes going.
- 27:40- My boss had to like calm him down
- 27:42because he was just going off like crazy.
- 27:44You know, that's the type of thing
- 27:47where people get so baked into their conspiracies.
- 27:50- They're confronted with the truth
- 27:52and don't know how to handle it, right?
- 27:54And it's like, and then we get,
- 27:57it's very rare as an adult that you get yelled at like that.
- 28:01Right?
- 28:01So that's why you're like, oh God,
- 28:02you start to feel like a kid again.
- 28:03But then you have to be like, wait a minute, I'm right.
- 28:06Wait a minute.
- 28:07(laughing)
- 28:08- I was like, this guy's the dumbass.
- 28:09- And he's like yelling at me and I'm like,
- 28:11my parents never even yelled at me like this.
- 28:13- Yeah.
- 28:13(laughing)
- 28:14- It's like when the truth is right in front of you.
- 28:17It reminds me of that movie, don't look up.
- 28:20That came out two years ago and God,
- 28:23that was for the most fucking frustrating movie
- 28:25I've seen in so long because the truth is literally
- 28:29just right there if you raise your head and look at it.
- 28:31But that was such a conversation of just,
- 28:34you know, the MAGA movement too,
- 28:36that it's just like it's right there guys.
- 28:38Come on.
- 28:39- Yeah, you can, I mean, my father who is in his late 70's,
- 28:44he's very much a Trump supporter and he,
- 28:48I will tell him something and he, I'll show him facts
- 28:53and he's like, are you sure that wasn't like AI or something?
- 28:59And I'm like, you don't even understand how AI works.
- 29:02(laughing)
- 29:04- But then when they see something that is AI,
- 29:06like a picture of Jesus surrounded by like ducks
- 29:08and scarlet joeants and they're like,
- 29:10oh, hashtag blessed.
- 29:11Amen.
- 29:12- Comment amen for blessings.
- 29:14- Yes.
- 29:15- Okay.
- 29:16(laughing)
- 29:18- Jesus is just hanging out with an Avenger.
- 29:20Yeah, they're basically.
- 29:21- Yeah.
- 29:22(laughing)
- 29:23- Oh, hashtag blessings.
- 29:24I got that viral video a couple years ago where she's like,
- 29:27mom, mom, they found Jesus, he came back and the mom's like,
- 29:31she'll be the video.
- 29:32I want to see you.
- 29:33- Show it to me right now.
- 29:34- Yeah.
- 29:35- She starts a weepie.
- 29:36- Oh my God.
- 29:38- Sometimes I regret the day we,
- 29:40we taught parents how to access Facebook and Instagram.
- 29:43- How to internet.
- 29:44- Yeah, how to internet.
- 29:45Like, would we have been better off
- 29:48would this have ever happened?
- 29:49That's like that butterfly effect of,
- 29:51if we just didn't give them the information,
- 29:54like would this have ever happened?
- 29:56But, you know.
- 29:57- It was like a year ago that my dad found out
- 29:59that there was more to the internet than Facebook.
- 30:02- Oh gosh.
- 30:04I can actually look at facts on here.
- 30:06- I can.
- 30:07- He's like, he just thought that the internet was Facebook
- 30:09and I'm just like, that's adorable.
- 30:12- You sweet, sweet summer child.
- 30:14(laughing)
- 30:16- Good man.
- 30:18It can be used for good, it can be used for evil.
- 30:20It's like, yeah, honestly, anything
- 30:23because there's been so many ways
- 30:25that I've organized over Facebook
- 30:27for progressive movements and causes
- 30:29and for abortion rights over the summer
- 30:31and then it can be used to spread some fascism
- 30:35and some visitors style propaganda.
- 30:39- Yeah, and this movie, let's what's said,
- 30:42this mini series or movie or what I'm gonna call it,
- 30:44it's a very poignant,
- 30:47I actually think people should watch it.
- 30:49- I totally agree.
- 30:51- But it's available, I mean, it's on Plex
- 30:52or something that's where I found it.
- 30:53- Plexi, me too, yeah.
- 30:55- Something's like a film.
- 30:57- You've been in prime video, I think.
- 30:58- Oh, Plex and Prime, okay.
- 30:59- Like, I think I'm a prime, you have to pay for it.
- 31:02- Oh.
- 31:03- Pretty sure, but yeah, so yeah.
- 31:04- Plex, pluck it up.
- 31:05- Yeah.
- 31:06(laughing)
- 31:07- Yeah.
- 31:08- Well, I definitely recommend it to anybody who,
- 31:11I don't know, anybody who's a fan of sci-fi
- 31:14or who just, I mean, anything that you've listened to
- 31:17I say and you go, okay, yeah, that sounds like something
- 31:19that I would be interested in wanna support too.
- 31:22Check out V, 1983.
- 31:25Watch a lady swallow a guinea pig hole.
- 31:28- It's hot.
- 31:28- It's hot.
- 31:29- It's what's metal.
- 31:30(laughing)
- 31:31- That's it, just watch that.
- 31:32- Honestly, like Diana just, oh, so beautiful.
- 31:36- Take that part.
- 31:37- So beautiful, but so beautiful.
- 31:39- So evil and so beautiful.
- 31:41- Yes.
- 31:41- Sometimes I go hand in hand, you know?
- 31:43- Yes.
- 31:44- Yeah.
- 31:45(laughing)
- 31:47(dramatic music)
- 31:50- So besides old 1983 mini series,
- 31:56what else have you been into lately, you guys?
- 31:59What are you watching, reading, listening to?
- 32:02- Yeah, so on the note of anti-science,
- 32:06I actually have been watching this new Netflix TV show.
- 32:11It's called Apple cider vinegar.
- 32:15It's also based on this documentary
- 32:19or this woman named Belle Gibson, who in the 2010s,
- 32:24she came to popularity over being an influencer
- 32:28on Instagram who had a malignant brain tumor
- 32:33and cured herself via juice.
- 32:38- Jesus.
- 32:39(laughing)
- 32:40- And so she built this huge brand.
- 32:43- Olivia put cured herself in quotes, by the way,
- 32:45for anyone just listening.
- 32:47- Yes.
- 32:47- Heavy finger parts.
- 32:49- She used to use herself.
- 32:50- Yes, yes.
- 32:51And so it's, she really blew up.
- 32:54She had an app called The Whole Pantry
- 32:56and really was one of these like original wellness,
- 33:00health gurus who built a brand around it
- 33:03and then created like a productized service.
- 33:05She was very, very well known.
- 33:07She was an Australian influencer.
- 33:09And ultimately it came out that she lied
- 33:13about having cancer, the entire time.
- 33:15- I shocked.
- 33:16- Right, exactly.
- 33:18And so the documentary kind of tells the story
- 33:21of how she did it, how like she was found out
- 33:24and all this stuff.
- 33:26And then Apple cider vinegar is based on that
- 33:29and that Netflix made it.
- 33:30And it's a dramatized version of that story.
- 33:33I'm only a few episodes in so far,
- 33:36but it's really, really good.
- 33:37I like the way that they do it.
- 33:39They kind of break the fourth wall
- 33:41and have each of the characters talk to the camera
- 33:43and kind of be like a, you know,
- 33:47sly bag style, I would say.
- 33:49And it's really, really good.
- 33:51And so I would definitely pop that.
- 33:53And then Netflix is just putting out
- 33:55some crazy documentaries right now.
- 33:57- Yeah.
- 33:58- Did you watch the Gabby Patsito one?
- 34:00- Yes, I do.
- 34:01- I knew you'd would, I knew you would.
- 34:03That was good.
- 34:04But they actually just came out with this documentary
- 34:07called Chaos, a Manson murder story.
- 34:10I think this one is called Manson Murners.
- 34:12And it's based on this book called Chaos by Tom O'Neill.
- 34:16And the book itself alleges that Charles Manson
- 34:21was a part of the MK Ultra Study
- 34:24and that he was actually used by the CIA
- 34:29to and taught these tactics.
- 34:31And that's ultimately how he gained divine control.
- 34:34I read the book, like four years ago.
- 34:36The book is amazing, Chaos by Tom O'Neill.
- 34:39And the documentary is based on that book.
- 34:42It's super interesting.
- 34:44It goes into how Charles Manson was connected
- 34:47to Jolly West, or Dr. Jolly West,
- 34:50who's really big in the MK Ultra side.
- 34:52And very, very interesting.
- 34:54If you don't wanna read a, you know,
- 34:56a 24 or 12 hour book, then you can watch the documentary.
- 35:00And it can be--
- 35:01- Michael Olivia reads like 45 books a month.
- 35:03It's insane.
- 35:04(laughing)
- 35:05- Hey, I'm on 18 books this year so far.
- 35:09- Sure.
- 35:10- I've been an avid reader, but--
- 35:13- Far more than me too.
- 35:14- Yeah.
- 35:15(laughing)
- 35:16- I think, I mean, I find Manson is interesting too.
- 35:18It's like, I know he has connections to Scientology too.
- 35:22So-- - Yes.
- 35:23- So yeah, it's really interesting.
- 35:25- There's an author, I think, I don't know if it's in Blue Sky,
- 35:30but there's an author who wrote Blue Sky.
- 35:33I can't remember his name right now,
- 35:34but he makes a big argument that he wasn't a part of MK Ultra.
- 35:39He was actually a part of Scientology.
- 35:41- Which I've never heard that conspiracy before.
- 35:44I don't know if that's what you wanna call it,
- 35:45but that's interesting.

- 36:12So, oh, God.
- 36:14You watched all this, like, deep shit.
- 36:16Mind's not gonna be--
- 36:17(laughing)
- 36:19(laughing)
- 36:21Well, now that we got the smart junkie out of the way,
- 36:25I watched the first two episodes of Daredevil Born again
- 36:29on Disney Plus.
- 36:31I am a huge Marvel fan girl.
- 36:35Like, I will consume any and all of the MCU
- 36:39and be an apologist for most of it.
- 36:42But for those who don't know, Daredevil Born again is,
- 36:47there was a devil series on Netflix.
- 36:50It's gosh, 10 years ago, that was amazing.
- 36:54And after the invention of Disney Plus,
- 36:59those Netflix shows for a minute kind of seemed
- 37:02like they weren't gonna be canon.
- 37:04And now they are.
- 37:05And we've seen Matt Murdock, a K.A. Daredevil,
- 37:08make his way back into the MCU.
- 37:11And so finally, this is his revival slash continuation
- 37:15of his story that we left off
- 37:18when the Daredevil show stopped on Netflix.
- 37:21The first two episodes, I will not spoil it
- 37:23for anybody who hasn't watched yet.

- 37:51(laughs)
- 37:52What did you think about it?
- 37:54- I knew it was gonna happen.
- 37:56I had a feeling and then I was disappointed though
- 37:59at the same time.
- 38:00I was like, okay, but yeah, it's Marvel.
- 38:03They'll do what they do.
- 38:04- They will do what they do.
- 38:05There is also a comic book storyline
- 38:08where that is--
- 38:11- Part of the first.
- 38:12(laughs)
- 38:12- Part of the first.
- 38:13- Yeah, like how do I say this without spoiling it?
- 38:16So maybe they'll go that way.
- 38:17- Hopefully they do.
- 38:18I mean, who knows?
- 38:19- Yeah, I hope so.
- 38:21- I'm not supposed to happen in season two with that,
- 38:24but so yeah.
- 38:25(laughs)
- 38:25- Oh God, I love that we both know exactly
- 38:28what we're talking about, but try to so hard not to spoil it.
- 38:31- I have anything, but yeah.
- 38:33(laughs)
- 38:34- Yeah, I was actually gonna,
- 38:35I was gonna actually mention that
- 38:37as something I've watched recently,
- 38:38but also more on the line of faking cancer.
- 38:42I watched Scamanda.
- 38:44- What's that?
- 38:46- Documentary on Hulu.
- 38:48I think it was on ABC or something,
- 38:49but I had listened to the podcast years ago when it came out.
- 38:54It's about this woman who was like a internet blogger.
- 38:59I think it was before like Vity.
- 39:04- There were influence services.
- 39:05- Yeah, influence her.
- 39:06And she faked having cancer for years
- 39:11and got all this money out of people.
- 39:13They would pay for trips to her to go to Broadway
- 39:16and see Hamilton and whatnot.
- 39:19- Oh my God.
- 39:19- For that.
- 39:20Yeah, and she just faked this whole thing for years and years
- 39:25and got a lot of money out of people at her church
- 39:28and different things.
- 39:29It was interesting that that was interesting.
- 39:32And then I also watched another documentary.
- 39:36It was about this, oh my God, about this woman who's in jail now.
- 39:42I can't remember the name of the documentary,

- 40:11- I watched that.
- 40:12Well, I think of this documentary from back in the day
- 40:16that I, back in the day, was probably like 10 years ago.
- 40:19Called The Woman Who Wasn't There.
- 40:22- Oh yeah, yeah.

- 40:25If you haven't watched this one,
- 40:26she has this whole fake ass story
- 40:29that she was in one of the towers of September 11
- 40:33with a plane hit.
- 40:34And she gets tons of money, tons of sympathy

- 40:42And as the title suggests, she was not there.
- 40:46- Yes, yeah, I have seen that.

- 40:55but it's really intriguing.
- 40:58Yeah.
- 40:59- I think it's like, how do you get to that point?
- 41:02Like I am someone who is obsessed with colds.
- 41:05And I just find it so interesting, like manipulation.
- 41:09And it's also like, how do you get manipulated like that?
- 41:12And then also what type of person can manipulate
- 41:15in that way?
- 41:16I think it's just so interesting.
- 41:17And I think scammers really follow into that,
- 41:20but on like a one-to-one basis as well.
- 41:23- Everything that you just said brought us right back to V.
- 41:26- Yeah.
- 41:27(laughing)

- 41:28Who scams?
- 41:30Who has the power to manipulate people like that over time?

- 41:38- I also recently listened to a podcast.
- 41:41It's called The Opportunist,

- 41:53- The guy trying to fight petafiles who,

- 42:00- Yeah.
- 42:01- Oh my gosh.
- 42:02I am not familiar with this.
- 42:04- Interesting.
- 42:05- If you wanna go down the craziest rabbit hole.
- 42:08So Mormon Stories podcast does a whole series
- 42:13about Tim Ballard and who he's connected to

- 42:18And then he's like two or three degrees separated
- 42:22from Laurie Valow and Chad Daybell,
- 42:26as well as Jody Hildebrand,
- 42:28who's the therapist for Ruby Frankie.
- 42:31- Like you get, you see the spider graph of Mormon,
- 42:36Mormon like influencers,
- 42:38and ultimately like Doomsday individuals.
- 42:42And yeah, it's crazy.
- 42:44Mormon Stories has some really good ones.
- 42:45I'll have to check out The Opportunist,
- 42:47but yeah, he's a crazy person.

- 42:53and she used to tell me all these crazy stories
- 42:55about just growing up Mormon and, yeah,
