- 0:58Speaker 1: one to eleven tears.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Kevin McCullough, Welcome in. It's just after seven o'clock. Kevin McCullough,
- 1:06Speaker 2: glad to be with you. Christine Nicholas is back, and
- 1:09Speaker 2: you know what, Christine, it's turning into a regular occasion
- 1:12Speaker 2: on which I am now seeing you multiple times a week,
- 1:15Speaker 2: so I know this is getting to be kind of fun.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Thanks for the invite, By the way, earlier this week,
- 1:20Speaker 2: we got to go sail around the tall ships of
- 1:23Speaker 2: New York and see them up close, a little more
- 1:26Speaker 2: up close than we saw him on Saturday, including the
- 1:29Speaker 2: Amerigo Vespucci, which is being set around my house with
- 1:32Speaker 2: great emphasis. My half Italian wife and my one fourth
- 1:36Speaker 2: Italian kids running around the house going Amergo Vespucci, the
- 1:40Speaker 2: most beautiful boat in the world.
- 1:44Speaker 3: They say that, Well, I loved spending time with your family.
- 1:47Speaker 4: What a beautiful family. You have never been.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Been around the spawn before, so this was like a
- 1:52Speaker 2: first time for nab both and I was like, Lord,
- 1:55Speaker 2: just please let him be good tonight.
- 1:57Speaker 4: No, they were exceptional.
- 1:59Speaker 3: I mean, look, this is this was a wonderful cruise,
- 2:01Speaker 3: and thank you to Morgan and to Travis and to
- 2:05Speaker 3: Ben and Connor, all the wonderful folks from sail Forth
- 2:09Speaker 3: and New York City Water Cruises that really gave us
- 2:13Speaker 3: this wonderful front row seat to these beautiful ships that
- 2:18Speaker 3: are now fortunately no longer in our harbor. They're heading
- 2:21Speaker 3: up to Boston right now, many of the tall ships.
- 2:25Speaker 3: But this was just such a wonderful week that we
- 2:28Speaker 3: had to kick off the celebrations for July fourth, and
- 2:31Speaker 3: then to be able to get on the water and
- 2:33Speaker 3: see these boats up close and have a fabulous meal
- 2:37Speaker 3: by the way too, So it gives you a bit
- 2:40Speaker 3: of a glimpse of what New York City water cruises
- 2:42Speaker 3: can do. They operate out of Peer thirty six. They
- 2:44Speaker 3: have three different operations. They are going to be launching
- 2:48Speaker 3: a sunset cruise I think Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, so
- 2:53Speaker 3: for the weekends we'll maybe we'll have Mergan on or
- 2:57Speaker 3: Travis on to talk more about that, to give the details,
- 3:00Speaker 3: because I think they're ironing them out. But that's going
- 3:02Speaker 3: to be exciting because what better place to see the
- 3:04Speaker 3: sunset than the majestical skyline of New York City.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Yeah. No, I've seen a few of them from dinner cruises,
- 3:12Speaker 2: and there's nothing like being on the water as that
- 3:14Speaker 2: goes down, and especially if you get to go past
- 3:16Speaker 2: Lady Liberty at some point. That's that's always fun and
- 3:21Speaker 2: amazing pool and getting to do so with the beautiful
- 3:26Speaker 2: tall ships in port really was special. So thank you
- 3:29Speaker 2: for making that happen. And Charlotte could not have been
- 3:32Speaker 2: more tickled than to get to spend some time with
- 3:35Speaker 2: you and miss ab You're like booking her for like
- 3:39Speaker 2: modeling gigs and stuff, and I'm like, does Christie ever
- 3:42Speaker 2: just like turn it off? Like what do you do
- 3:45Speaker 2: to relax? Like just through the yellow pages, I can.
- 3:48Speaker 4: See the talent. I can see the talent, and she's
- 3:51Speaker 4: got it. My goodness. Yeah.
- 3:52Speaker 3: But by the way, I mean, she is really interested
- 3:55Speaker 3: in seeing more shows. So I would recommend the Harry
- 3:59Speaker 3: Potter Curse Child. And her eyes grew real wide when
- 4:02Speaker 3: I mentioned that, because I got to see that last
- 4:04Speaker 3: week and shout out.
- 4:06Speaker 2: To the entire series, which was Mom's thing. Before you
- 4:10Speaker 2: watch the movies, before you see the musical, you need
- 4:13Speaker 2: to read the entire series. And so she's completed that
- 4:17Speaker 2: task a couple of times over and I think she's
- 4:20Speaker 2: going to be excited to see Chirstchild.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Yeah. That has a lot of twists and turns in it,
- 4:25Speaker 3: and it's really beautiful and Megan Burn is one of
- 4:27Speaker 3: the stars in that. Our good friend Jerry Byrne, who
- 4:30Speaker 3: is you know, been very involved with Gary Sinise Foundation,
- 4:34Speaker 3: involved with Veterans Causes, the Marine Corps, just an amazing
- 4:39Speaker 3: American who we often have on during the Veterans day time.
- 4:44Speaker 3: But his daughter is one of the stars in Chris Child.
- 4:46Speaker 2: She played what role?
- 4:48Speaker 3: Oh, I knew you were going to ask me that
- 4:49Speaker 3: she played the headmaster, the headmistress.
- 4:52Speaker 4: And she plays two.
- 4:54Speaker 3: I don't want to tell you the other one because
- 4:55Speaker 3: you'd be shocked, but you know, the good in the
- 4:57Speaker 3: bad Maggie Smith. Yeah, it's surprising because she's so young,
- 5:05Speaker 3: and it's amazing how you know the makeup can make it.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Well, that's what they do, right, I mean, that's what
- 5:09Speaker 2: they're used to. Yeah.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Yeah. And then the other one she wants to see
- 5:12Speaker 3: is Amaze with Jamie Allen, who.
- 5:15Speaker 2: We're going a week from tomorrow.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Oh really, okay, terrific.
- 5:20Speaker 2: We've got our tickets where uh yeah, yeah. Jamie came
- 5:22Speaker 2: on the syndicated show and we talked about it to
- 5:25Speaker 2: the whole nation and he's really excited. And you know,
- 5:29Speaker 2: there's a piece of me that's still a kid when
- 5:31Speaker 2: I get around magicians, like I just how'd they do that?
- 5:34Speaker 2: It just like fascinates me.
- 5:36Speaker 4: He's not just only a magician, he's a mentalist.
- 5:39Speaker 3: He's a an entertainer. And by the way, I believe
- 5:44Speaker 3: he's going to be at our grand opening for House
- 5:46Speaker 3: of Spells, which is going to be on July.
- 5:50Speaker 2: You were also my kids with and now I guess
- 5:53Speaker 2: put that on the calendar.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Yes, I would love for them to be there. I
- 5:56Speaker 3: know it may not work that date, but there'll be
- 5:58Speaker 3: a lot of things.
- 5:59Speaker 4: So House of.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Spells, I'll just give folks a little bit of a
- 6:02Speaker 3: peak sneak if you know where Model's was on forty
- 6:06Speaker 3: second Street, so it's west two thirty four west forty seconds,
- 6:10Speaker 3: so right before you get to the Port Authority bus terminal,
- 6:13Speaker 3: very busy traffic area. But this is a twenty thousand
- 6:16Speaker 3: square foot retail immersive experience and it's all about the
- 6:20Speaker 3: mystical spells, the fandom. It's really going to be fantastic,
- 6:26Speaker 3: and Jamie Allen is going to join us when we
- 6:30Speaker 3: either cut the ribbon or maybe make the ribbon disappear.
- 6:33Speaker 3: We're not quite sure what Jamie's planning on doing on
- 6:36Speaker 3: the twenty ninth, but Tom Harris from Times Square Alliance
- 6:39Speaker 3: will be there because it is one of the largest
- 6:43Speaker 3: retail establishments opening in Times Square. There's been a bunch
- 6:47Speaker 3: opening in Times Square, but they're all about like four
- 6:50Speaker 3: thousand square feet. This one's twenty thousand square feet.
- 6:53Speaker 2: So you and it's a magnet like he somehow he
- 6:56Speaker 2: just gets people to come to Times Square and just
- 6:59Speaker 2: buy stuff. Stay.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Well, they had the Pokemon Go Convention or I don't know.
- 7:05Speaker 3: It was insane last night when I was going to
- 7:07Speaker 3: see this off Broadway show last night, which we're going
- 7:11Speaker 3: to hear more about in our show because Francine Lefreck
- 7:14Speaker 3: is going to be in our is going to be
- 7:16Speaker 3: our special guest. Who's the producer of Music City, Beautiful Show.
- 7:20Speaker 4: Beautiful show.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Rhyme was a bit of a challenge to find the
- 7:24Speaker 2: Pokemon's around.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, But it was beautiful to see
- 7:27Speaker 3: all these young kids, you know, young kids, teenagers, fandom kids,
- 7:31Speaker 3: you know.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Mix that in with the World Cup folks.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Mix that in with the folks here that are still
- 7:37Speaker 3: enjoying the bi centennial because yesterday was also a very
- 7:40Speaker 3: special day, Kevin.
- 7:42Speaker 4: July ninth was the first time in New.
- 7:44Speaker 3: York City that the Declaration of Independence was red, So
- 7:49Speaker 3: we did a bit of a reenactment yesterday where it
- 7:52Speaker 3: was red originally at City Hall Park was before the troops.
- 7:56Speaker 3: General George Washington directed his leaders to read it in
- 8:00Speaker 3: different cities around the same time. So five pm they
- 8:03Speaker 3: read this, of course when you actually read it aloud,
- 8:07Speaker 3: as we did with twelve different historians. Elected Council member
- 8:13Speaker 3: Chris Marte. We had the guys from the Cuney Gotham Center,
- 8:17Speaker 3: Peter Christian Eigner and Ted Knutsen, who created this Echoes
- 8:21Speaker 3: of Revolution. We've had former City Council member Ken Fisher.
- 8:25Speaker 3: We had Tonio Burgess, who represents the federal two fifty.
- 8:29Speaker 4: I got to read because.
- 8:30Speaker 3: It was on representing the Governor's two fifty for the
- 8:33Speaker 3: New York State. Julie Kocher was there from New York
- 8:35Speaker 3: City Tourism. Just a terrific mix of folks. We read
- 8:38Speaker 3: the Declaration of Independence, which is a very passionate document
- 8:43Speaker 3: that really sets forth why these grievances, these injustices, this
- 8:48Speaker 3: oppression from King George the Third made us separate and
- 8:54Speaker 3: declaring our separation. And after the troops, I think there
- 8:58Speaker 3: were eight thousand assembled heard these words. They then marched
- 9:01Speaker 3: down Broadway. They went to Bowling Green, which still exists.
- 9:05Speaker 3: It's a beautiful park in Lower Manhattan, right below where
- 9:07Speaker 3: the bull is on Broadway, and they took down, they toppled.
- 9:12Speaker 4: They said, lead statue.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Yeah, get a rope, they pulled it down, they chopped
- 9:17Speaker 3: it up, They turned that lead into bullets, and guess what.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Those bullets took care of a lot of our problems.
- 9:23Speaker 3: They started, you know, the Revolutionary War here in New
- 9:27Speaker 3: York City.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Well, it's just another We're going to have about what
- 9:30Speaker 2: eight years, eight nine years.
- 9:32Speaker 4: Of Yeah, we were an occupied city for seven and
- 9:34Speaker 4: a half years.
- 9:35Speaker 2: There'll be more, there'll be more thresholds along the way
- 9:38Speaker 2: to mark two fifty. But July ninth the very important one,
- 9:41Speaker 2: and mister Eigner was kind enough to come on my
- 9:43Speaker 2: National show yesterday as well, and he really gave us.
- 9:47Speaker 2: We just went history, like from the top boom, just
- 9:49Speaker 2: right into the history of it. And of course I'm
- 9:51Speaker 2: just sitting there like soaking it all in because I'm
- 9:54Speaker 2: a geek that way. When we come back, we're going
- 9:57Speaker 2: to talk about music city, not necessarily Nashville, but not
- 10:01Speaker 2: not Nashville. We'll tell you and if there's some hot
- 10:04Speaker 2: wings included, we'll let you know.
- 10:06Speaker 3: About his brod.
- 10:11Speaker 1: From New York. It's Radio night Life with Kevin McCullough.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Welcome back. It is the Friday edition of Radio night Live.
- 10:19Speaker 2: We call that fun Friday. Around these parts, she's Christine Nicholas.
- 10:23Speaker 2: I'm Kevin McCullough. And after I don't know a little
- 10:25Speaker 2: bit of an exhale, Christine, we took the two fifty
- 10:29Speaker 2: thing to the max. We're still going to celebrate two fifty,
- 10:32Speaker 2: but we've just been blowing out everything for two fifty
- 10:35Speaker 2: in recent days. And it's fun to get back to
- 10:37Speaker 2: Broadway and kind of the everyday fun stuff that we
- 10:40Speaker 2: have in New York.
- 10:41Speaker 4: It is, indeed, and remember there's a lot of great.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Offerings on off Broadway, and that's what I wanted to
- 10:48Speaker 3: talk to you about.
- 10:49Speaker 5: Today.
- 10:51Speaker 3: I had the pleasure to go see a new off
- 10:55Speaker 3: off Broadway musical.
- 10:57Speaker 4: It's called Music City.
- 10:58Speaker 3: It's playing at the Saint Luke's, which is really for anyone.
- 11:02Speaker 3: It feels like Broadway because it's on forty sixth Street,
- 11:05Speaker 3: just west of Eighth, but it's at like a church basement.
- 11:09Speaker 3: But when you walk in to Music City, you feel
- 11:12Speaker 3: like you're walking into Music City, which, of course, Kevin
- 11:15Speaker 3: you know as a musician, is Nashville.
- 11:18Speaker 4: So and it's one of those honky tonk bars.
- 11:21Speaker 3: They've set it up like that and it's a wonderful
- 11:23Speaker 3: story and we have with us the producer Francine Leftfreck,
- 11:27Speaker 3: who is a dear friend. So I'm so glad that
- 11:29Speaker 3: we've reconnected through off Broadway. Franccene in her early years
- 11:34Speaker 3: was very much involved with producing Broadway shows, off Broadway
- 11:37Speaker 3: shows and has been spending most of for a recent
- 11:41Speaker 3: time really helping so many women just being with entrepreneurship
- 11:47Speaker 3: through her a not for profit, Same Sky.
- 11:50Speaker 4: You really should look that up.
- 11:52Speaker 3: It's a beautiful not for profit. It has become a
- 11:55Speaker 3: jewelry business. Gorgeous jewelry. By the way, Kevin, Hint, hint.
- 12:00Speaker 3: If Amy's listening tonight, but we can.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Get down Tuesday, so you know it's never too late.
- 12:08Speaker 3: But Francine, welcome to Radio Night Live, and tell us
- 12:10Speaker 3: what inspired you to get behind this really fun show,
- 12:14Speaker 3: Music City the musical.
- 12:16Speaker 5: What inspired me was talent, talent, talent.
- 12:21Speaker 6: I am a sucker for talent, and when I see it,
- 12:25Speaker 6: it speaks to a very deep place in me and
- 12:29Speaker 6: I can't get it out of my head. And this troop,
- 12:33Speaker 6: which started at Bedlam Theater, was so talented. Every aspect
- 12:41Speaker 6: of it just reaped of this talent that you couldn't
- 12:45Speaker 6: get out of your head, and it became like a
- 12:48Speaker 6: little bit of an obsession.
- 12:50Speaker 5: And when it was in a tiny, tiny.
- 12:53Speaker 6: Theater a church on the third floor on West eighty
- 12:58Speaker 6: sixth Street, and I got to see it, I just
- 13:02Speaker 6: and it was supposed to have a very short run.
- 13:05Speaker 5: As you know, my.
- 13:07Speaker 6: Philanthropy in me said I have to keep this show
- 13:11Speaker 6: running and you know, support this talent, which we did
- 13:15Speaker 6: for three months. And then I said, well, if you
- 13:18Speaker 6: want to go to off Broadway, please let me know.
- 13:21Speaker 6: And here I am at the Saint Luke's Church with
- 13:25Speaker 6: this show that everyone should see because the talent is
- 13:30Speaker 6: extraordinary and if you see some of these actors, like
- 13:35Speaker 6: Stephen Michael Spencer, he will be historic.
- 13:40Speaker 5: I mean, that's how good he is. He is, I mean,
- 13:44Speaker 5: but the talent is such.
- 13:46Speaker 6: They play musical instruments, they play multiple parts, and it's
- 13:51Speaker 6: an immersive experience. So you walk in and you arrive
- 13:55Speaker 6: at the Wicked Tickle Bar in the middle of East Nashville,
- 14:00Speaker 6: and you immediately succumb to where you are.
- 14:04Speaker 5: You don't think you're in New York anymore.
- 14:06Speaker 6: You're at a table in chairs, having a beer or
- 14:09Speaker 6: a drink and experiencing this unbelievable music and fabulous singing
- 14:19Speaker 6: and immersive experience that you don't get in other places.
- 14:25Speaker 5: In fact, there's an open mic.
- 14:27Speaker 6: That starts the show, and I heard last night like
- 14:30Speaker 6: a twelve year old girl sang and she just knocked
- 14:33Speaker 6: that out of the park. So for people that want
- 14:36Speaker 6: to have that big break, you can sing on Broadway
- 14:41Speaker 6: at Music City.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Francine, I have to admit, when it comes to musicals
- 14:48Speaker 2: as a whole, I'm a big fan. But a few
- 14:52Speaker 2: years ago there was a little show that was based
- 14:55Speaker 2: on a movie called Once that had an incredible run
- 14:58Speaker 2: on Broadway. I think it won Best Musical its first year.
- 15:04Speaker 2: And the stuff that made that show separate from everything
- 15:09Speaker 2: else that was on Broadway was this immersive factor that
- 15:11Speaker 2: you're talking about, the way you were in the pub
- 15:14Speaker 2: and the musicians were playing. And if it captures even
- 15:18Speaker 2: ten percent of that kind of magic, every person that
- 15:21Speaker 2: comes to New York I will take to see this
- 15:23Speaker 2: show because I am just a sucker for the real
- 15:25Speaker 2: stuff being played in real time.
- 15:27Speaker 6: I didn't think this would happen to me, but frankly,
- 15:31Speaker 6: I can't see the show enough.
- 15:35Speaker 2: And you've probably seen it more anybody else.
- 15:37Speaker 6: And my husband says to me, when are we going
- 15:41Speaker 6: with the show again. It's shocking how many shows have
- 15:45Speaker 6: you seen that you actually.
- 15:47Speaker 5: Say, I can't wait to see it again. I can't
- 15:50Speaker 5: wait to see it again.
- 15:52Speaker 3: I well, I want to stay again because the music
- 15:55Speaker 3: is so good Kevin, and they're all original songs, but
- 16:00Speaker 3: you know, you feel like you're watching Blake Shelton or
- 16:02Speaker 3: you know, Leanne like some of these up and like
- 16:05Speaker 3: not up and coming, but as they were up and coming.
- 16:09Speaker 3: It's really a story about the talent that Francine mentions
- 16:13Speaker 3: and this open mic night that takes place. The owner
- 16:18Speaker 3: of the bar, you know, the fictional bar, is just
- 16:22Speaker 3: a fabulous She's an amazing actor, and she brings you
- 16:26Speaker 3: in and when you first walk in, they treat you
- 16:29Speaker 3: like you're at like a Nashville dive bar, and you're
- 16:33Speaker 3: not quite sure. And there are a couple of surprises
- 16:36Speaker 3: with the open mic, where like we had this young
- 16:40Speaker 3: girl and she had an audition next week. She was
- 16:43Speaker 3: in town, so she wanted to practice the audition.
- 16:46Speaker 4: It was so lovely.
- 16:47Speaker 3: The audience really got behind her and it was beautiful.
- 16:50Speaker 3: And then you had another piano player who happened to
- 16:53Speaker 3: be sitting next to us. He's from Indiana, and we
- 16:55Speaker 3: got to meet him and just chit chat with him,
- 16:57Speaker 3: and then they called him up.
- 16:59Speaker 4: And then there was a third guy.
- 17:01Speaker 3: I'm not going to blow it, but you know, he
- 17:04Speaker 3: seemed a little off right, but he ends up being
- 17:09Speaker 3: sort of the villain in the show. Right, So, like
- 17:12Speaker 3: all of a sudden, you're in the show. So it
- 17:15Speaker 3: goes from like amateur night with people that sign up,
- 17:21Speaker 3: and I know, Kevin's got a daughter, Charlotte, who is
- 17:23Speaker 3: an amazing singer and an aspiring young actress, and this
- 17:27Speaker 3: little girl reminded me a lot of Charlotte, And then
- 17:31Speaker 3: all of a sudden, the show takes off. It just
- 17:33Speaker 3: rolls right into it. So that to me, I thought
- 17:36Speaker 3: was very clever and different.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Princin does the does the story also contain a degree
- 17:41Speaker 2: of a narrative? I think the other thing that was
- 17:43Speaker 2: very charming about something like once is you had you
- 17:46Speaker 2: had the group making the record, which was part of
- 17:48Speaker 2: the storyline, but then there was also this relational stuff.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Is it is it a narrative like that or is
- 17:53Speaker 2: it like a just a talent show night.
- 17:55Speaker 6: At the It's actually a very very strong narrative and
- 18:01Speaker 6: a wonderful, challenging story love at a wonderful love affair,
- 18:11Speaker 6: a Faustian kind of a plot, and a lot of
- 18:15Speaker 6: decisions that the actors have to make. The story involves
- 18:21Speaker 6: what would you do to have a career really in Nashville?
- 18:25Speaker 5: And how much do you have to pay? And a
- 18:28Speaker 5: lot of moral questions.
- 18:29Speaker 2: But I actually know a ton of people that have
- 18:32Speaker 2: gone through that machinery because I've worked in the music
- 18:35Speaker 2: industry for a long time on the other side of
- 18:38Speaker 2: the life, and I cannot wait to see this now.
- 18:41Speaker 2: I haven't seen it, and I'm sorry that I haven't,
- 18:43Speaker 2: but we will go see it. By the way, we've
- 18:45Speaker 2: got to take a quick break. Francine's going to stay
- 18:46Speaker 2: with us. But if Zachary Stewart says Music City returns
- 18:50Speaker 2: and it's better than ever, you got to go see it.
- 18:53Speaker 2: There's just no other there's just no other explanation for that.
- 18:56Speaker 2: She's Christy Nicholas on Cavin McCullum.
- 18:58Speaker 1: We're coming right back, and now I'm from New York
- 19:08Speaker 1: back to radio night Life.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Here's Kevin McCalla. Welcome back. It's that radio night Live show.
- 19:14Speaker 2: That's what it is. She's Christine Nicholas. I'm Kevin McCullough.
- 19:17Speaker 2: It's fun Friday. We're talking about Music City, which, as
- 19:21Speaker 2: you may guess from the name, is about a place
- 19:24Speaker 2: in Nashville, specifically East Nashville. And our guest is Francine Lefreck,
- 19:30Speaker 2: who is one of the producers in Francine, it's been
- 19:33Speaker 2: a joy to have you on the show and talking
- 19:34Speaker 2: about this. When you when you when you have criteria
- 19:40Speaker 2: in front of you and you're saying do I want
- 19:42Speaker 2: to be involved in this project or not? Is talent
- 19:47Speaker 2: the overriding thing that usually gets you to pull out
- 19:49Speaker 2: the check book? I mean, and if so, there was
- 19:53Speaker 2: something about this that just spoke to you in a
- 19:55Speaker 2: way that nothing else had for a while.
- 19:59Speaker 5: Well, I'm I mean the music.
- 20:02Speaker 6: The music was recorded a number of the songs by
- 20:05Speaker 6: Blake Shelton and Keith Urban. The music and the ability
- 20:13Speaker 6: to put the music together, the musicology of it as
- 20:18Speaker 6: it were, I mean, are so powerful that I have
- 20:22Speaker 6: a sickness now where I can't stop humming the songs
- 20:26Speaker 6: in my head, and I have a jukebox in my
- 20:30Speaker 6: head and I don't know which song is going to
- 20:32Speaker 6: come on. I have no control over it, and it's
- 20:35Speaker 6: out of control and it keeps going and going and going,
- 20:38Speaker 6: and all I want to do sing the lyrics and
- 20:41Speaker 6: go because that's how.
- 20:42Speaker 5: Good the music is.
- 20:43Speaker 6: So it's the full package, Kevin, to answer your question,
- 20:48Speaker 6: it's the full package, and this show had it, and
- 20:51Speaker 6: I really haven't seen anything. You know, when you see
- 20:54Speaker 6: talent like that, it's like lightning striking. Now, if you remember,
- 20:59Speaker 6: in my history, I produced the show nine, and the
- 21:03Speaker 6: show My One and Only, and the original Crimes of
- 21:08Speaker 6: the Heart and Noises Off, and a lot of amazing shows,
- 21:13Speaker 6: and each one had that formula, each one had that
- 21:18Speaker 6: wow factor.
- 21:19Speaker 5: And you know, I.
- 21:20Speaker 6: Remember casting Holly Hunt in Crimes of the Heart. You know,
- 21:25Speaker 6: I just remember all of these things.
- 21:27Speaker 2: So basically, you're warning us we need to be ready
- 21:30Speaker 2: to be humming these tunes for a long time after
- 21:32Speaker 2: the show.
- 21:33Speaker 5: It's a sickness that we all get.
- 21:36Speaker 3: So well, it's a good one to have had.
- 21:40Speaker 5: It's a good sickness. It's a good sickness because it helps.
- 21:45Speaker 3: I mean, I saw Lauren Lolow Pritchard last night as
- 21:48Speaker 3: the lead. She is the understudy, and you would think, well,
- 21:52Speaker 3: it's a she was fantastic the voice. And this is
- 21:56Speaker 3: the type of talent that they have performing in this
- 21:59Speaker 3: show music. Because if you're the understudy and you can
- 22:02Speaker 3: perform the way she did, I can only imagine if
- 22:04Speaker 3: I go back and you know, and I see, I'm
- 22:08Speaker 3: trying to see.
- 22:08Speaker 5: Who she's now taken over the part. Ah, we lost
- 22:15Speaker 5: the we lost the lead two nights before the first preview.
- 22:20Speaker 6: Oh well, and Lolo, who starred in Spring Awakenings, who's
- 22:25Speaker 6: a great talent, literally flew on a Tuesday night, learned
- 22:30Speaker 6: the show Wednesday and Thursday, when in the show on
- 22:33Speaker 6: a Friday, and since that time has been doing an
- 22:37Speaker 6: unbelievable job.
- 22:38Speaker 5: And she's a great singer. And I don't know how
- 22:41Speaker 5: they do it.
- 22:42Speaker 6: How do you learn an entire show with eleven songs,
- 22:46Speaker 6: you know, in two and a half days.
- 22:48Speaker 5: Can you explain that to me?
- 22:50Speaker 4: I don't know. Well, they're also musicians. She's playing the
- 22:53Speaker 4: piano and you had the other guitar.
- 22:56Speaker 5: They do everything.
- 22:57Speaker 6: They played the violin, the piano, the guitar, and it's
- 23:01Speaker 6: it's it's that kind of talent that makes you excited
- 23:05Speaker 6: and proud and proud to be an American. And you know,
- 23:10Speaker 6: proud of our history and legend of music and what's
- 23:15Speaker 6: going on in Nashville, and it's it's great.
- 23:19Speaker 2: So it's playing now. And do we know how long
- 23:22Speaker 2: it's currently slated to be there?
- 23:24Speaker 5: Well, I'm hoping.
- 23:25Speaker 6: I'm hoping it lasts as long as The Fantastics, which
- 23:29Speaker 6: was forty.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Years Okay, very good.
- 23:33Speaker 5: You know if you go go big or go home?
- 23:36Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I like I like you. You're my kind
- 23:38Speaker 2: of girl, Friencceine, this is cool stuff. Musiccitythemusical dot com
- 23:42Speaker 2: is the website Music City the Musical And again it's
- 23:45Speaker 2: at Saint Luke's and there are shows this weekend two
- 23:50Speaker 2: and seven thirty on Saturday, two and seven pm on Sunday,
- 23:54Speaker 2: and I'm going to have to get there, Francine. I
- 23:57Speaker 2: just I'm such a geeked out music fan and I
- 24:02Speaker 2: love stuff that's really well done. I love immersive stuff,
- 24:04Speaker 2: I love live stuff. So you've got you've got me
- 24:06Speaker 2: and my family written all over this and we will
- 24:08Speaker 2: we will definitely be doing that.
- 24:10Speaker 3: Well.
- 24:11Speaker 6: The reviews said best music on Broadway without any competition.
- 24:18Speaker 2: So yeah, well, and as I said at the beginning
- 24:20Speaker 2: of this, if Zachary Stewart says it's the best ever.
- 24:23Speaker 2: You got to go see it, because Zach doesn't hand
- 24:24Speaker 2: out those words very often. Thank you for being with us, Francine.
- 24:28Speaker 2: We appreciate it.
- 24:29Speaker 5: And I can't wait to hear what you think.
- 24:33Speaker 2: I will send. I'll make sure I email you and
- 24:35Speaker 2: give you my thoughts on it.
- 24:36Speaker 5: I would love to hear.
- 24:38Speaker 2: We'll do a review maybe on the show as well.
- 24:40Speaker 2: All Right, we got a lot more to get to.
- 24:42Speaker 2: A little place called the Frick is calling us. We'll
- 24:45Speaker 2: go there next.
- 24:51Speaker 5: What a little Moonlight Can Do.
- 24:52Speaker 1: It's Radio Night Life.
- 24:54Speaker 5: Here's Kevin mccollor.
- 24:57Speaker 6: What a little moon like can do.
- 24:59Speaker 2: Welcome back to Fun Friday. It's Radio night Live. She's
- 25:02Speaker 2: Christine Nicholas. I'm Calvin McCullough and Christine. We're really excited
- 25:06Speaker 2: about our next guest. My bride was asking me weeks ago, hey,
- 25:09Speaker 2: can we can you get somebody on from the Frick
- 25:11Speaker 2: to talk about the Marie Antoinette stuff and leave it
- 25:14Speaker 2: to ab a little engine that can. She just goes
- 25:17Speaker 2: and gets some and so I'm gonna give you the
- 25:19Speaker 2: honors of introducing our guests. But we're really looking forward to.
- 25:21Speaker 3: This fantastic and thanks so much, first time on Radio
- 25:25Speaker 3: Night Live. Yfulu, the Anpullet curatorial fellow at the Frick
- 25:30Speaker 3: Collection and the organizer of Ruffles and Ribbons fashion plates
- 25:36Speaker 3: from the time of Marie Antoinette. This is very exciting.
- 25:40Speaker 3: This is something that we haven't seen before. So walk
- 25:44Speaker 3: us through the exhibit and what inspired the timing of
- 25:48Speaker 3: having it now as we are celebrating our two hundred
- 25:51Speaker 3: and fifty So I'm.
- 25:52Speaker 7: Just curious, Well, it's I will actually return to the
- 25:57Speaker 7: American to fifty because actually there's a great point of
- 26:02Speaker 7: connection between the exhibition and the celebration. So the show
- 26:08Speaker 7: really came about because we just had our wonderful big
- 26:12Speaker 7: oil painting exhibition Thomas Ginsborough the Portraiture, the fashion of portraiture,
- 26:17Speaker 7: So we really want to examine in a closer detail
- 26:21Speaker 7: the exquisite fashions of the late eighteenth century, where that
- 26:26Speaker 7: when that painter was working. And we have three hundred
- 26:31Speaker 7: and seventy original fashion plates from the late eighteenth century
- 26:35Speaker 7: in our library collection, and we thought it was an
- 26:38Speaker 7: amazing opportunity to finally showcase them to compliment the oil
- 26:43Speaker 7: painting exhibition, but also to allow our audience to have
- 26:47Speaker 7: a better understanding of the many eighteenth century portrait paintings
- 26:51Speaker 7: that we have in the collection. So the elevator pitch
- 26:55Speaker 7: of these prints would be that they are the ancestors
- 27:00Speaker 7: of fashion magazine. So during the late eighteenth century, Marie
- 27:04Speaker 7: Antoinette became the ultimate fashion icon. Everyone in the French
- 27:08Speaker 7: court was we're looking at her for fashion inspiration, and
- 27:12Speaker 7: then all the other courts in Europe, even in America,
- 27:15Speaker 7: they were looking at the French court for fashion inspiration.
- 27:19Speaker 7: So France, in particular Paris and Versailles became the fashion
- 27:23Speaker 7: capital of the world. So then ladies around the world
- 27:26Speaker 7: wanted to know what was the latest trends, so then
- 27:29Speaker 7: they were looking for things to stay informed. So that's
- 27:33Speaker 7: how these fashion images were created.
- 27:36Speaker 2: It's not really that different when you think about, like
- 27:39Speaker 2: in the era of Princess die in Kate Middleton, I
- 27:42Speaker 2: hear a lot of you know, women in that kind
- 27:45Speaker 2: of age range talk about you know, oh, what is
- 27:48Speaker 2: she wearing this season and that sort of thing. That
- 27:51Speaker 2: still kind of holds true for the fashion taste of
- 27:55Speaker 2: today exactly.
- 27:58Speaker 7: And also in the eighteenth century, the entire fashion industry,
- 28:02Speaker 7: including textile fashion boutiques everything. They were heavily controlled by
- 28:07Speaker 7: the state because they recognized how big of the revenue
- 28:12Speaker 7: the fashion industry brought into the state. So then they
- 28:15Speaker 7: really utilized Marie Antoinette's celebrity to the fullest advantage. She
- 28:22Speaker 7: was basically a walking billboard for the French fashion industry,
- 28:26Speaker 7: so the more fashions she put on, the more they
- 28:29Speaker 7: could sell to other countries. Obviously, that had an implication
- 28:33Speaker 7: that later on during the revolution, because of how visible
- 28:36Speaker 7: her fashions and her spendings on luxury was, that she
- 28:39Speaker 7: became this kind of scapegoat for the kind of unraveling
- 28:45Speaker 7: of the monarchy. So there is a very interesting, multi
- 28:49Speaker 7: layered history to the fashion of the time.
- 28:51Speaker 3: So there are twenty four hand colored engravings that depict
- 28:55Speaker 3: the French fashion in the late eighteenth century.
- 28:57Speaker 4: Yes, and then there are many.
- 28:59Speaker 3: Other artifacts what must like if you want to give
- 29:04Speaker 3: us the version that we have to definitely see. In
- 29:07Speaker 3: addition to the plates, the fashion plates tell us a
- 29:12Speaker 3: little bit more about what to expect.
- 29:13Speaker 4: To the exhibit.
- 29:15Speaker 7: When you walk in and pay attention to the first
- 29:17Speaker 7: two fashion plates that greet you, it's two images related
- 29:21Speaker 7: to Marie Antoinette. The first one is her in a
- 29:24Speaker 7: royal court gown. That was the first time the French
- 29:27Speaker 7: Queen ever appeared in a fashion publication, so that's the
- 29:30Speaker 7: first time the queen has had done it. And then
- 29:34Speaker 7: right next to it is the Queen in the informal
- 29:37Speaker 7: casual daywear. So this very casual, toned down chemise that
- 29:42Speaker 7: later became known as the Queen's chimise. That really started
- 29:46Speaker 7: the trend for women around the world to wear wide
- 29:48Speaker 7: column dresses that later became a part of the revolutionary fashion.
- 29:53Speaker 7: Even so, we really just by looking at the first
- 29:56Speaker 7: two images you get a great sense of the te layered,
- 30:00Speaker 7: maltifaceted nature of her fashion and how influential it was.
- 30:05Speaker 2: For people that haven't been to The Frick explain kind
- 30:10Speaker 2: of what the mission of the Frick is.
- 30:14Speaker 7: So The Frick was founded by Henry Clay Frick, who
- 30:17Speaker 7: was a business tycoon who got his start in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,
- 30:22Speaker 7: dealing in coal and the steel industry, and then he
- 30:26Speaker 7: moved to New York and he was influenced by contemporary
- 30:29Speaker 7: art collectors like the Vanderbilts and JP Morgan in particular,
- 30:33Speaker 7: and he really wanted to leave a legacy of this
- 30:36Speaker 7: public museum after he passed away. So he designed this
- 30:40Speaker 7: mansion both as his residence and also especially the first
- 30:46Speaker 7: world was designed with a museum in mind. So he
- 30:50Speaker 7: passed away in nineteen nineteen, and then his daughter and
- 30:53Speaker 7: wife continued to live there until in nineteen thirty one,
- 30:56Speaker 7: and when the wife, Adelaide, passed away, the daughter, Helen
- 31:00Speaker 7: clay Frick, decided to expand and renovate the entire space,
- 31:04Speaker 7: which led to the opening of the museum in nineteen
- 31:07Speaker 7: thirty five.
- 31:08Speaker 3: Right, and then I believe, wasn't it just reopened again?
- 31:10Speaker 3: Didn't they close it for a major renovation recently?
- 31:14Speaker 7: Yes, So during the COVID a few years we closed
- 31:17Speaker 7: the museum and we had this extensive renovation renovation project.
- 31:23Speaker 7: So one of the big things is that we opened
- 31:26Speaker 7: up the entire second floor, which used to be our offices,
- 31:29Speaker 7: and now the entire second floor is open to the
- 31:32Speaker 7: public for the first time in almost a century, and
- 31:35Speaker 7: you can walk through all of the rooms to see
- 31:38Speaker 7: even more things on display now.
- 31:40Speaker 3: And that must have been able to expand the collection
- 31:43Speaker 3: so much more so that.
- 31:44Speaker 7: Yes, that's with the yes. So with the renovation we
- 31:48Speaker 7: have the new Lauder special exhibition space as well, so
- 31:54Speaker 7: we don't have to take down our old master paintings
- 31:57Speaker 7: whenever we want to have a big exhibition. So every
- 32:00Speaker 7: time now that the visitor comes back to the Frick,
- 32:03Speaker 7: they will expect to find their favorite pieces always there
- 32:08Speaker 7: to greet them.
- 32:09Speaker 2: Very cool. All right, IFULU, thank you so much for
- 32:13Speaker 2: what you're doing. And my bride is a big Marie
- 32:18Speaker 2: Antoinette and fashion fan all around, so I have a
- 32:21Speaker 2: feeling I might have a feeling. I'm gonna come see
- 32:23Speaker 2: you face to face very soon.
- 32:24Speaker 7: Yes, looking forward to it.
- 32:25Speaker 2: We'll do that. But thanks for spending some time with us.
- 32:28Speaker 2: Thank you so much. Christine and Kevin, you got it.
- 32:31Speaker 2: When we come back, Christine's got a whole list of
- 32:33Speaker 2: fun things for you to do this weekend. Don't go anywhere.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Once again from New York here's Radio night Life and
- 32:44Speaker 1: Kevin McCullough.
- 32:46Speaker 2: Welcome back, Kevin McCullough. Glad to have you with us.
- 32:49Speaker 2: We're talking about all things fun on Fun Friday. Christine Nicholas,
- 32:53Speaker 2: my partner in crime on this. We're here with another

- 33:25Speaker 3: so much for the information from Yfulu from the Frick Collection.

- 34:06Speaker 3: which is one of the largest yachts that they have,
- 34:09Speaker 3: but they also have the Luisa of the Seas, which
- 34:12Speaker 3: is beautiful and that's a bit of a higher end
- 34:15Speaker 3: experience if you will. But you can check out their website.
- 34:18Speaker 3: They have all different types of tours. I want to
- 34:21Speaker 3: give a shout out to our fellow radio night Liver
- 34:23Speaker 3: your Tuesday Travel Tuesday with Linda Perillo. She of course
- 34:28Speaker 3: is still working on her book. Your payment method has
- 34:31Speaker 3: been declined. She's got a couple of New Jersey based
- 34:35Speaker 3: book signing There's one Saturday, July eighteenth from five thirty
- 34:39Speaker 3: pm at the Barnes and Noble in Clark Commons. There's
- 34:42Speaker 3: one later in the month Friday July thirty first in
- 34:45Speaker 3: Milbourne at the book House and then Saturday, September nineteenth
- 34:52Speaker 3: the Barnes and Noble in Woodland Park, New Jersey.
- 34:54Speaker 4: And by the way, she's going to come up with us.
- 34:56Speaker 3: We're going to be doing a remote up on Arthur
- 34:58Speaker 3: Avenue on two Tuesday, September one with Linda Perilla. So
- 35:03Speaker 3: we'll start it off with a book party and then
- 35:04Speaker 3: we're going to go right into our remote, which I'm
- 35:06Speaker 3: very excited about Radio Nightline will finally be on Arthur
- 35:10Speaker 3: Avenue with Peter Modonia, all of our friends up there,
- 35:13Speaker 3: John Kelvelly from the from the Zoo. We hope to
- 35:16Speaker 3: have the new president. She's not so new anymore, but
- 35:19Speaker 3: she's really fascinating of Forlordham University. So put that on
- 35:23Speaker 3: your calendar's folks. It looks like we're going to be
- 35:25Speaker 3: at Mario's, but we're still ironing out the details, but
- 35:28Speaker 3: that's going to be fun.
- 35:29Speaker 4: And by the way, Little Italy still exists.
- 35:32Speaker 3: If you saw what Paul had to put out that
- 35:39Speaker 3: Little Italy in the Bronx and Little Italy downtown, they
- 35:42Speaker 3: still exist and we are very proud of it. Staten
- 35:45Speaker 3: Island is also the largest county in the nation of
- 35:48Speaker 3: Italian Americans. We're very proud of our heritage. There's also
- 35:53Speaker 3: Irish Americans. There's if you look at Brooklyn and Borough Park,
- 35:57Speaker 3: very proud Jewish Americans. But somehow now that we missed
- 36:01Speaker 3: the map of the immigration clusters for New York City,
- 36:06Speaker 3: so don't take that word for it.
- 36:07Speaker 2: Just coming to our Irish we're depleted as well. So
- 36:10Speaker 2: my people were gone to your people were gone. My
- 36:13Speaker 2: people were gone. Yes, my Jewish friends were gone. Everybody
- 36:16Speaker 2: was gone. Who did he have left? Like Latinos, I
- 36:21Speaker 2: don't know.
- 36:21Speaker 3: Like, is that it great to celebrate It's great to
- 36:24Speaker 3: celebrate all immigration because we are a nation that people
- 36:28Speaker 3: are trying to get in, not trying to get out,
- 36:30Speaker 3: unlike you know, so many other countries. And that's what.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Those nobody's ever lost their life trying to leave America.
- 36:38Speaker 2: That's just not how it works. Christine, great show as always,
- 36:42Speaker 2: Thank you for being here. Friends, join us next week
- 36:45Speaker 2: and we will see you then
