- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back with Mike Nardi, you kind of assistant coach
- 0:03Speaker 1: Lynden New Jersey. We're gonna go to Jersey here for
- 0:06Speaker 1: a moment, went to Saint Patrick's. We were talking Dan
- 0:09Speaker 1: Hurley about the great rivalry of Saint Anthony Saint Patrick's
- 0:12Speaker 1: over the years. Uh, Mike, you were part of that.
- 0:16Speaker 1: That that was probably a baptism by five any basketball player.
- 0:21Speaker 1: I mean I was broadcasting some of this stuff, but
- 0:24Speaker 1: you guys on there, I mean, it was it was
- 0:28Speaker 1: pretty intense.
- 0:29Speaker 2: It was it was it was it was kind of like, uh,
- 0:32Speaker 2: we were playing football out there, you know.
- 0:34Speaker 3: It was.
- 0:35Speaker 2: It was always the you know, really grinded out rock
- 0:38Speaker 2: fight type of game, low scoring. You know, Coach Hurley was,
- 0:45Speaker 2: you know, obviously the best coach in the country at
- 0:47Speaker 2: the time, and anytime you're going into a game to
- 0:51Speaker 2: play against.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Them, you just knew what you were in for. And
- 0:55Speaker 3: and coach Boyle at St.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Pat's had a ton of respect for Coach Hurley, you know,
- 0:59Speaker 2: and I think as was part of kind of where
- 1:01Speaker 2: the relationship started to become, you know, something for myself,
- 1:07Speaker 2: because you know, coach Hurley was at Rutgers as an
- 1:09Speaker 2: assistant at the time, and he would come in to
- 1:12Speaker 2: watch practices at Saint Pat's and we kind of got
- 1:14Speaker 2: a chance to you know, know each other a little bit.
- 1:17Speaker 2: And then he ended up going to Saint Benedict's and
- 1:20Speaker 2: we started you know, playing against them because they came
- 1:23Speaker 2: became really good. Yeah, so, uh, it was just a
- 1:26Speaker 2: great rivalry and and New Jersey basketball at that time
- 1:30Speaker 2: was just, you know, I think at one of his
- 1:32Speaker 2: all time highest with with the coaching and the players
- 1:36Speaker 2: and just the competitive nature within the state. But always
- 1:40Speaker 2: a ton of respect and you know, going up against
- 1:44Speaker 2: coach Hurley senior and coach Early.
- 1:47Speaker 1: You went after college and played professionally in Europe, Netherlands
- 1:51Speaker 1: and Italy. Tell me a little bit about that, because
- 1:54Speaker 1: that was something that guys did quite a bit of
- 1:58Speaker 1: and still do these days. But that was a that
- 2:01Speaker 1: was a leap you had to go play, you know,
- 2:03Speaker 1: in another continent. What was that like?
- 2:06Speaker 3: You know what, Mike, it was an awesome experience.
- 2:09Speaker 2: You know, we all, I mean I say we all,
- 2:11Speaker 2: but as players, you want to play in the NBA,
- 2:13Speaker 2: right that was my dream.
- 2:14Speaker 3: That was my goal.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Obviously that didn't occur, and you know, I always felt
- 2:18Speaker 2: like I got the most out of my talent, but
- 2:21Speaker 2: I I had a backup plan.
- 2:23Speaker 3: I wanted to keep playing. I love the game.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Uh it was it was a way to to make
- 2:28Speaker 2: a great living as well, you know, financially. But it
- 2:31Speaker 2: really came down to I just wanted to continue, you know,
- 2:35Speaker 2: playing and I enjoyed it. And I got a chance
- 2:38Speaker 2: to play eight years in Italy, you know, and and
- 2:41Speaker 2: and my great grandfather through him, I became a naturalized citizen,
- 2:46Speaker 2: so that gave me an advantage over there as well,
- 2:48Speaker 2: becoming a you know, an Italian passport player.
- 2:52Speaker 3: So that was a great experience.
- 2:54Speaker 2: I got a chance to travel and and you know,
- 2:56Speaker 2: within Europe, and it really just opened my eyes to uh,
- 3:01Speaker 2: you know, another part of the world, my heritage, you know,
- 3:04Speaker 2: and where my family was from, and just being appreciative,
- 3:09Speaker 2: you know, of of everything that we do have here
- 3:11Speaker 2: in the States, because it is different, you know, they
- 3:14Speaker 2: move a little bit slower, they tend to relax a
- 3:18Speaker 2: little bit more, you know, And it kind of just
- 3:21Speaker 2: opened my eyes to where if you can find a
- 3:23Speaker 2: great balance of that, you know, you can you can live,
- 3:26Speaker 2: live a long time.
- 3:27Speaker 3: And really enjoy yourself.
- 3:28Speaker 2: So it was it was a fun experience and I
- 3:30Speaker 2: got a chance to meet a lot of great guys
- 3:32Speaker 2: and stay in touch with you know, players and friendships.
- 3:37Speaker 3: So it was fun.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Yeah, the afternoon nap is a daily thing.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Yeah, it's real.
- 3:43Speaker 1: And the red wine.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's real. It's real. Everything shuts down, you know.
- 3:49Speaker 2: I remember my first week I was there. I was
- 3:52Speaker 2: just asking, hey, can I get this? Can I get that?
- 3:54Speaker 2: And you know, everything was closed like the afternoon right, yeah,
- 3:59Speaker 2: well what do I do here? And yeah, everybody's just like, hey,
- 4:01Speaker 2: this is it. You know, this is the siesta. This
- 4:03Speaker 2: is where everyone rests and they get ready for you know,
- 4:06Speaker 2: the evening.
- 4:07Speaker 1: A little R and R in the middle of the day.
- 4:09Speaker 1: All right, Mike, we appreciate it. We'll be along on
- 4:12Speaker 1: the ride with you in this season with the Huskies,
- 4:14Speaker 1: and I'm sure we'll spend some more time together. We
- 4:17Speaker 1: appreciate you.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Thanks, yeah, and great to be here.
- 4:20Speaker 2: I'm really excited, you know, just to continue this journey
- 4:24Speaker 2: and you know, be in pursuit of another championship.
- 4:27Speaker 3: So go Huskies. Yeah, you got it.
