- Shaun: Welcome back to the reset. am Shaun Tucker, human performance scientist and authority architect. We are here in the living lab, documenting the struggle, the science and the shift for every high performance dad and founder who is ready to bridge the gap between their ambition and their presence. Today, we're diving into the topic of just pick up the bar. The longer you wait, the heavier it gets. This came from the man Jason Khalipa, CrossFit Games winner all the way back in 2008, legend of a guy, and really I want to get into this topic because it is just so relevant to face things head on, to really reclaim and master the man underneath that performance or that drain, that burnout that we tend to get into. So for a long time, think I've been in the business of waiting for the right time. And if I reflect back five, no, I've been married longer than that. Seven years ago, seven years ago, I was planning obviously to go and get married over in Singapore to my beautiful wife or my beautiful girlfriend then wife now. And my business was starting to get a bit of traction. This is actually the time where I hired a mentor, a business. and personal training mentor basically to up level me and help my business really thrive. I was at a place of kind of desperation. I wanted to really prove that I would be the financial provider of the house, especially leaning into before we got married. So I had a determined goal of hitting a financial target, which I didn't meet, but I joined this program and went to Singapore. You my business was going okay. I actually had. a team member, another personal trainer underneath working for me. And, you know, took on the responsibility of taking care of my clients whilst I was away, which was fantastic. But then something happened. I came back from Singapore, happily married, enjoying the experience. My wife came back with me because we hadn't really been together physically for a long period of time for the last five years before that. We'd spend a couple of weeks or whatever together, but not an extended period of time. Now that I look back, it's been seven years we've been together, ⁓ which is longer than the long distance that we had, which is fantastic. But anyway, looking at that moment where I lost all that momentum that I built up. prior to getting married. And then I went overseas. had my clients being looked after by one of my team members and I came back and I just remember feeling so helpless. Cause I knew how much it took for me to get to that point. And I was like running around and then I'd find myself just stopping. in my thoughts, be like regretting that I got married, that I took a month off of work to go and get married to the girl of my dreams. What? I was stuck in my head thinking that taking a month off work was the biggest regret of my career. Are you serious? That was literally what was going on in my head. And I'm being openly serious and vulnerable about that. Because I know for you right now, you're probably looking back at those times where you struggled, you strained. You're wondering how you've lost yourself and you're starting to have the symptoms of, I don't know, maybe weight gain or you're starting to get rashes in places that you never had rashes before. Maybe it's eczema or dermatitis or little sores that sort of just don't go away. You're waking up feeling mentally foggy. Your energy's just not the same. You want to be there for your kids, but at the same time, you can't even show up for yourself. Right. And maybe you are starting to really show up for yourself, but things are just not what they used to be. Body's feeling a little bit heavier, feeling more tired. You're just not really sure what's going on. And Then fast forward to last night, well actually this morning I was on the Train Hard Men's Club virtual call which was at 2am for me anyway which is Thursday 9am PT Pacific Time. And Jason sent out a newsletter so Jason Khalipa, CrossFit Games winner all the way back in 2008, he started the Train Hard Men's Club over in the US of A and essentially He wrote this newsletter because he was talking to one of his buddies and he reflected back to the time where he was in the CrossFit Games. He wasn't focused on winning because he was talking about his own struggle ⁓ which was relating back and he reflected to that point where you just have to pick up the bar. Right, because as soon as you pick up the bar you know that that rep, that task is going to get done. But the thing is the longer you wait the heavier it gets. And so he put out this newsletter and was talking about this on the call this morning because it's so relevant. And I reflect back to that moment where, you know, I thought I lost my business. I just lost the momentum of the actions that it took. I was lifting really heavy weights on the bar and then took a month off, came back and I waited. in my thoughts longer and longer for that momentum and the action or the task to just not pick off from where it left but just getting back in the weights room and lifting the damn bar. I thought it was a 200 kilo bar that I was trying to pick up but really it was probably only a 15 kilo or 20 kilo bar. Much more manageable when it's in reality not coming from this place because your mind is not there to master you, it's actually there to serve you. But the longer you wait, the more entrenched you become in your thoughts, and the heavier the task or the thing becomes. So ⁓ maybe today is just a reflection point. Look back at those times where you have been really dialed in. You've been focused, you've had energy, you've been present with your family. You've felt the best you've ever felt. But then something happened. You stopped, you paused, you lost that momentum. And you found it really hard to get back on the horse or just pick up the damn bar. And that's okay if you've had a hard time picking up the bar again. Because the most important thing is... You have now, you can go and pick up the bar right now. And we can relate that bar to being your standards too. Lifting your standards up, bringing it back to the point where you are focused, you're energized, you are present. You're happy, you're enjoying the process of getting better every single day. It's not expecting yourself to be able to do what you could do. back when you were fully dialed in. But it's focusing on the process that gets you there. Because that's the only difference is it's the inputs. And if you think your inputs are going to be really, really heavy, it's only because you're thinking. So just get over to the dam bar, pick it up, and stop waiting. Because the longer you wait, the heavier it'll get. So that's it for today's episode of the reset. If you found value, I want you to share it with one person.
