Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: It's the Inside Scoop with FT senior insider Ken Rosenthal. Ken,
- 0:07Speaker 1: good to see you. Okay, let's start on a happy
- 0:10Speaker 1: note with labor talks. It's hard to do, but did
- 0:13Speaker 1: we find a little bit of synergy between MLB owners
- 0:17Speaker 1: and players in this first week of exchanged proposals? I
- 0:20Speaker 1: liked the one paragraph to point out like a little
- 0:22Speaker 1: bit of positive.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Well, my belief is there is a sliver of hope
- 0:27Speaker 2: based on one thing, which is both sides seem to
- 0:30Speaker 2: be acknowledging something that MLB has of course talked about
- 0:34Speaker 2: for a while, which is the small market teams need
- 0:37Speaker 2: more revenue. And I don't know that anyone would dispute
- 0:40Speaker 2: that who watches the sport no matter which side you're
- 0:43Speaker 2: on here, players or owners, Clearly there needs to be
- 0:46Speaker 2: something changed with regard to the way these teams get money,
- 0:50Speaker 2: the small market teams, and yes, the way they spend
- 0:53Speaker 2: it as well. So that's how I began my calum
- 0:55Speaker 2: today with that being a sliver of hope. The problem is,
- 1:00Speaker 2: and the problem that is going to persist for some
- 1:02Speaker 2: time now, is that the two sides are not talking
- 1:05Speaker 2: the same language.
- 1:06Speaker 3: The owners want to cap the players.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Do not want a cap, and the proposals are entirely
- 1:12Speaker 2: different because the structures that they are pursuing are entirely different. Obviously,
- 1:17Speaker 2: the players want to maintain the status quo and the
- 1:20Speaker 2: owners want to change it dramatically. So I don't know
- 1:24Speaker 2: how that changes until at some point, and it's not
- 1:28Speaker 2: going to be most likely for nine or ten months.
- 1:30Speaker 2: One side says, Okay, we'll do your structure, and I
- 1:34Speaker 2: just don't see that happening anytime soon.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Is it scary that the PA said this is the
- 1:42Speaker 4: most significant mentioning of a cap in the collective bargaining
- 1:47Speaker 4: agreement since nineteen ninety four.
- 1:51Speaker 2: That's true, It is the most significant, and we know
- 1:54Speaker 2: what nineteen ninety four led to. And my fear here
- 1:57Speaker 2: is that this is the we're going down, that the
- 2:01Speaker 2: lockout that is inevitable come December first will eat into
- 2:06Speaker 2: next season. And my position in this has been consistent.
- 2:10Speaker 2: I believe there can be changes made to the current
- 2:13Speaker 2: agreement that fall.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Short of a cap.
- 2:15Speaker 2: There are ways to address these various problems which exist,
- 2:19Speaker 2: no question, that exist without having a salary cap. And
- 2:23Speaker 2: I also do not believe salary cap is the answer.
- 2:27Speaker 2: The magic bullet for competitive balance. We see this in
- 2:30Speaker 2: other leagues as well. The teams that are run poorly
- 2:33Speaker 2: still struggle, and the teams that are run well still
- 2:36Speaker 2: do really well. Now, obviously a cap can level the
- 2:40Speaker 2: economic playing field, and that needs to happen in our sport.
- 2:45Speaker 2: I just believe there are other ways to do it.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Do the owners truly believe when they say words like, oh,
- 2:52Speaker 4: we hear the fans, we hear the fans that a
- 2:56Speaker 4: salary cap will create that or are they just cherry
- 3:00Speaker 4: picking it because of their you know that would that
- 3:03Speaker 4: would be great for their pocket book? Because fans are
- 3:06Speaker 4: also saying, we don't want to miss games, we don't
- 3:09Speaker 4: want to lose games. But that's the owners are like
- 3:12Speaker 4: talking out of this side of their mouth, and they're
- 3:14Speaker 4: completely disregarding what the fans truly don't want, and what
- 3:17Speaker 4: the players don't want is miss time.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Actually, there are some fans at least they will say that, yes,
- 3:24Speaker 2: it would be worth it to miss games to get
- 3:27Speaker 2: another system in place. I don't necessarily believe fans when
- 3:31Speaker 2: they say that because it's easy to say, and then
- 3:33Speaker 2: once games are missed, everyone misses the sport. We love
- 3:37Speaker 2: the sport that's why we are so passionate about this.
- 3:40Speaker 2: But the owners are acting in the owner's best interests,
- 3:45Speaker 2: and anyone who doesn't believe that is kidding themselves. And
- 3:48Speaker 2: why is a salary cap in the owner's best interest
- 3:51Speaker 2: because it fixes costs and almost inevitably raises franchise values. Now,
- 3:58Speaker 2: if you get more competitive balance as a side dish
- 4:01Speaker 2: to the franchise values rising, great, And it just seems
- 4:05Speaker 2: to me that they're using the competitive balance argument, which
- 4:08Speaker 2: is debatable.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Then okay, you're using that, but in the end, we
- 4:14Speaker 3: know what you really want.
- 4:15Speaker 2: It's latantly obvious what they really want, and that's fine.
- 4:20Speaker 2: But to get that, they're gonna have to make some
- 4:23Speaker 2: concessions to the players. And I don't even know if
- 4:26Speaker 2: they can ever get to that point because the players
- 4:29Speaker 2: so philosophically oppose a cap and have historically since they
- 4:34Speaker 2: were formed as a union in I don't know, the
- 4:36Speaker 2: early seventies, late sixties.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Godfather, I'm a last minutic guy. Sometimes you're a last
- 4:41Speaker 1: mintic guy where you all of a sudden see a
- 4:43Speaker 1: night open up and you want to go grab some tickets,
- 4:46Speaker 1: and you hadn't gotten them already, so you're gonna seek Geek,
- 4:49Speaker 1: and you're gonna go look for a green dot and
- 4:51Speaker 1: see where the good seats are and the good value
- 4:53Speaker 1: is and have a little knight with the fam.
- 4:55Speaker 5: Right without a doubt. And I'm looking for some of
- 4:58Speaker 5: the best seats. I'm looking for that green when I
- 5:00Speaker 5: get that. It's a simple plug it in, use your hands,
- 5:03Speaker 5: go right on your screen, your phone, whatever platform you
- 5:07Speaker 5: can get it on. And it's so simple. They make
- 5:10Speaker 5: it so easy for you to do. Even my son
- 5:13Speaker 5: can do it if I ask them. Hey, Blakester, let's go, man,
- 5:16Speaker 5: get on there for us, find us a couple of
- 5:17Speaker 5: seats so we can watch even that Subway series.
- 5:20Speaker 6: That would be fantastic. Seat Geek has it all there
- 5:23Speaker 6: for you.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Yeah, and the code for you. You should know it.
- 5:26Speaker 1: It's Territory ten. It just gets you ten percent off
- 5:28Speaker 1: your next set of tickets. It's eke ten percent off
- 5:30Speaker 1: any tickets with promo code Territory one zero. Make sure
- 5:33Speaker 1: you click the link in the description, download the app.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Then the code is automatically added to your account so
- 5:38Speaker 1: you can use it later.
- 5:39Speaker 6: You and I both know that, and you've said it before.
- 5:41Speaker 5: The salary cap is most likely ninety nine point nine
- 5:44Speaker 5: nine nine percent not going to happen. What would be
- 5:47Speaker 5: the next thing MLB would want if they can't get
- 5:51Speaker 5: a salary cap? What would be the most second most
- 5:53Speaker 5: important thing you think they would want out of this
- 5:55Speaker 5: whole thing.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Todd, I don't know that I would agree it's ninety
- 5:59Speaker 2: nine point nine nine percent not gonna happen, but I
- 6:03Speaker 2: do believe that it's still unlikely from a player in
- 6:08Speaker 2: my expectation, the players are just vehemently opposed to this.
- 6:12Speaker 6: Now.
- 6:13Speaker 2: I wrote a whole story, I believe it was in
- 6:15Speaker 2: February about how there are different mechanisms that can be employed.
- 6:21Speaker 3: I believe I had five or six of them to
- 6:24Speaker 3: ultimately fix some of these problems.
- 6:27Speaker 2: What I suggested included increased revenue sharing and included a
- 6:31Speaker 2: flexible salary floor soft floor, which is what was in
- 6:35Speaker 2: the player's proposal. So it seems to me that once
- 6:41Speaker 2: the owners get off this, if they do, and I'm
- 6:44Speaker 2: not saying they will, but if they do, they're going
- 6:46Speaker 2: to want certain things too because they want things fixed.
- 6:50Speaker 2: I would assume that would mean stiffer luxury tax penalties
- 6:54Speaker 2: and thresholds, And I assume assume also that deferrals would
- 6:59Speaker 2: be part of this. They maybe want to do something
- 7:02Speaker 2: with that. There are all kinds of levers that can
- 7:04Speaker 2: be pulled, it's just that the owners don't want to
- 7:07Speaker 2: pull them right now. What they want is the cap,
- 7:09Speaker 2: which in their mind would solve a ton of problems.
- 7:14Speaker 4: All right, Well, then, then my question is you had
- 7:17Speaker 4: a quote in your article you said for the hearts
- 7:22Speaker 4: and mind. They're fighting for the hearts and minds of
- 7:25Speaker 4: the fans through this. Do you think the PA has
- 7:29Speaker 4: done enough in the pr battle because MLB and Rob
- 7:34Speaker 4: Manfred has gone, oh, we're here for the fans. We
- 7:38Speaker 4: hear you want competitive bounds. We hear that. We hear that,
- 7:41Speaker 4: and the PA says nothing, We're not saying anything.
- 7:47Speaker 2: No. Actually, see this most recent development where both sides
- 7:53Speaker 2: released their proposals essentially as positive.
- 7:57Speaker 3: In that regard for the PA, the PA has been.
- 7:59Speaker 6: Like that in the past.
- 8:00Speaker 3: We're not saying anything. No, that doesn't work.
- 8:03Speaker 2: So it seems to me that they are being more
- 8:06Speaker 2: active in trying to promote their position. Now what I
- 8:11Speaker 2: see myself in comments on my articles and comments on
- 8:15Speaker 2: x wherever is people dug in fans dug in the
- 8:20Speaker 2: way people are dug in on politics and that there's
- 8:22Speaker 2: no other side, there's no nuance, and that's the way
- 8:26Speaker 2: our world is right now. It is with every topic,
- 8:29Speaker 2: it's either black, white, and there's no in between.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Obviously here there's.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Going to have to be some in between at some point,
- 8:35Speaker 2: and in my view, we need to get to that
- 8:38Speaker 2: point before we miss games. And missing games would be
- 8:44Speaker 2: at this stage of the sports evolution when so many
- 8:46Speaker 2: good things have happened, and yes, good things have happened
- 8:50Speaker 2: in part because of what the commissioner has driven the pitch.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Clock for instance, and the abs. Now all of these things,
- 8:57Speaker 3: they've done a lot of really good things, and that
- 8:59Speaker 3: needs to be acknowledged. I just don't want them to.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Screw it up, and I fear, frankly, both sides will
- 9:07Speaker 2: be so dug in that they will screw this up.
- 9:10Speaker 4: On Twitter, I got eviscerated AJ and pretty much any
- 9:14Speaker 4: ex player has gotten eviscerated because well, of course you're
- 9:18Speaker 4: against the cap as an ex player. I am also
- 9:21Speaker 4: a fan of the game, and I want to see
- 9:22Speaker 4: the game grow exponentially to be the greatest sport that
- 9:26Speaker 4: I believe it is. What do I need to know
- 9:28Speaker 4: about this whole process as an ex player that you
- 9:33Speaker 4: feel like players sometimes miss because you're so informed. You
- 9:37Speaker 4: and Ellen, Evan Drelk and everybody at the athletic You
- 9:40Speaker 4: guys see it from a different lens as ex players do.
- 9:44Speaker 4: What do we need to know that we can inform
- 9:46Speaker 4: fans on besides the fact that fans are leaning towards
- 9:52Speaker 4: billionaires and calling us greedy, and it's like, wait, oh, whoa, whoa,
- 9:57Speaker 4: So what we need to know as ex players?
- 10:00Speaker 2: In my opinion, what ex players would need to know
- 10:04Speaker 2: is that, yes, there is a revenue disparity in the
- 10:07Speaker 2: sport to where a team or a franchise like Cleveland
- 10:11Speaker 2: or Tampa Bay or Pittsburgh is not economically even close
- 10:16Speaker 2: to where the Dodgers, the Mets, the Yankees are. That's
- 10:18Speaker 2: because of the sports historic nature. It doesn't have an
- 10:24Speaker 2: economic model where all of the revenue is nationally driven
- 10:28Speaker 2: or most of it is. The NFL is like that,
- 10:30Speaker 2: most of the revenue is from the national television contracts.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Baseball is locally driven. So you have this disparity.
- 10:37Speaker 2: The disparity is wider than it's ever been, maybe not
- 10:40Speaker 2: as wide as MLB advertised it. To me, when they
- 10:42Speaker 2: include all the payments the teams make with luxury tax penalties.
- 10:46Speaker 3: But it's wide. We all can acknowledge that. So what
- 10:49Speaker 3: I would say to players or union officials or agents is,
- 10:54Speaker 3: and I've said this, I've written this, that yes, there
- 10:57Speaker 3: is a problem here, and the problem needs to be addressed.
- 11:00Speaker 2: And one thing I took out of the union statement
- 11:03Speaker 2: that I found encouraging, and this is how I began
- 11:05Speaker 2: my story today, is that they seem to be recognizing.
- 11:10Speaker 3: This is a problem.
- 11:11Speaker 2: And one of the first things in the union statement
- 11:13Speaker 2: is something saying we're going to get small market teams
- 11:16Speaker 2: a minimum of two hundred and forty million dollars each MLB.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Taking conception into what the union is proposing, they say
- 11:22Speaker 2: it's actually not that good for small markets. Okay, they
- 11:25Speaker 2: can fight all they want about that. That has to happen.
- 11:29Speaker 2: This compression in some form has to happen. Now, does
- 11:34Speaker 2: that require a cap I still say no. I still
- 11:38Speaker 2: say you can make it tougher at the top, impose
- 11:41Speaker 2: even harsher penalties that exist now in the luxury tax system,
- 11:45Speaker 2: bring up the bottom and make penalties there too. If
- 11:48Speaker 2: teams don't meet a certain level, which is essentially what
- 11:50Speaker 2: the union is proposing that can happen.
- 11:54Speaker 3: But that is what I would say.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Players need to recognize that this is a problem, and
- 11:59Speaker 2: it seems to me they are recognizing it now.
- 12:01Speaker 3: How you address it.
- 12:03Speaker 2: That is ultimately going to be where the rubber meets
- 12:05Speaker 2: the road here and we'll see what happens.
- 12:08Speaker 1: It's getting hot out there, people. Let's talk Mack Weldon
- 12:11Speaker 1: fashion show real quick. AJ's got the Pima crew neck
- 12:15Speaker 1: T shirt, frotheather is frost heather.
- 12:17Speaker 7: It's it's got a little pieces of gray heather in there.
- 12:20Speaker 7: It's nice, it's soft, it fits really well. It's great
- 12:24Speaker 7: for summer down here in Florida. And I got a
- 12:26Speaker 7: couple of linen shirts and linen pants that are gonna
- 12:29Speaker 7: look nice when I go to Europe here in a
- 12:30Speaker 7: couple of weeks.
- 12:31Speaker 6: Very nice.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Yeah, it's very smooth, very thin. I'm wearing the eighteen
- 12:35Speaker 1: hour jersey short and heather gray. I'll leave that down
- 12:38Speaker 1: here for you. And the Pema short sleeve Henley. The
- 12:42Speaker 1: color on mine is desert spring, but it really resonates it.
- 12:46Speaker 1: It fits in kind of matches with everything in the
- 12:50Speaker 1: wardrobe too. It's the classic look they know what they're
- 12:52Speaker 1: doing here, so check it out. We've got the code
- 12:54Speaker 1: for you to get moving with mack Weldon Comfortable anywhere.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Go to Mackweldon dot com get twenty percent off your
- 13:00Speaker 1: first order of one hundred and twenty five bucks or
- 13:02Speaker 1: more with promo code foul. That's m A C K
- 13:05Speaker 1: W E L d O N dot com code foul.
- 13:09Speaker 1: I'll conclude with my point that that ties into your story.
- 13:12Speaker 1: So we get the twenty two page report from MLB,
- 13:15Speaker 1: and I know you mentioned this. You know I'm paraphrasing
- 13:18Speaker 1: a little bit, but part of it reads in a
- 13:20Speaker 1: depressing way. Is the sport broken? I just have a
- 13:24Speaker 1: hard time seeing that the sport being completely broken, like
- 13:29Speaker 1: everything is auto. We know what's going to happen. Have
- 13:32Speaker 1: the Dodgers had a nice run right now? Yeah, but
- 13:34Speaker 1: the Dodgers were run by Frank McCort like fifteen years ago,
- 13:38Speaker 1: less than that, what twelve years ago, and they were
- 13:40Speaker 1: a mess, they were laughing stock. Things can change very quickly,
- 13:43Speaker 1: so this is some good timing to make a case
- 13:46Speaker 1: like this. But even still, like are we not entertained?
- 13:49Speaker 1: Was the World Series not competitive?
- 13:50Speaker 6: You know?
- 13:50Speaker 1: Stuff like that, And on the on the.
- 13:53Speaker 3: Team side, Scott, Yeah, this drives me crazy.
- 13:56Speaker 2: And for years, the way I've always understood the sport,
- 14:00Speaker 2: and I started baseball riding in nineteen eighty seven, is
- 14:04Speaker 2: that the regular season is the true measure of a
- 14:07Speaker 2: team's quality.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Of The playoffs are.
- 14:08Speaker 2: The playoffs, and you only have one World Series champion,
- 14:11Speaker 2: But what you do in the regular season matters, and
- 14:14Speaker 2: the sport is even while expanding the playoffs, has largely
- 14:18Speaker 2: been built around that. Now all of a sudden, oh
- 14:22Speaker 2: my gosh, if you can't win the World Series, then
- 14:24Speaker 2: the sport's broken. Well, okay, there has not been a
- 14:27Speaker 2: small market team win since twenty fifteen, but my goodness,
- 14:30Speaker 2: I'll say it again. The Dodgers were so close to
- 14:33Speaker 2: getting knocked out in twenty four, the way they were
- 14:36Speaker 2: knocked out in twenty three, d and knocked out in
- 14:38Speaker 2: twenty two, And had they lost to the Padres in
- 14:41Speaker 2: twenty four, and let's not forget they were down two
- 14:43Speaker 2: to one in San Diego throwing a bullpeng game. If
- 14:47Speaker 2: they had not won that series, Dave Roberts gets fired
- 14:50Speaker 2: and a whole lot is different. So what I look
- 14:53Speaker 2: at with competitive balands is the success of Milwaukee and
- 14:57Speaker 2: Cleveland and Tampa Bay almost a year after year their
- 15:00Speaker 2: ability to compete in the regular season, and maybe one
- 15:03Speaker 2: of these years they're going to be able to do
- 15:05Speaker 2: it and go all the way through in the postseason. Now,
- 15:08Speaker 2: does that mean the system is perfect and cannot be
- 15:11Speaker 2: fixed or should not be fixed. No, I am not
- 15:14Speaker 2: saying that. And again, I can't imagine anyone would say, hey,
- 15:19Speaker 2: this is great right now, this is just perfect. It's
- 15:21Speaker 2: not perfect, But does it need a salary cap that
- 15:25Speaker 2: could cost us games in twenty seven to be rectified.
- 15:29Speaker 2: I still believe the answer is no, and I will
- 15:33Speaker 2: be always believing the answer is no.
- 15:35Speaker 3: There are other ways, right.
- 15:38Speaker 4: Last one for me, Ken is the proposal that Major
- 15:42Speaker 4: League Baseball put out there truly a representation of the
- 15:47Speaker 4: fact that all the owners are in agreeance that they're
- 15:50Speaker 4: going to share local TV revenues equally with each other,
- 15:54Speaker 4: because that is a big, huge part of it that
- 15:57Speaker 4: I'm like, wait a minute, so this is new the
- 15:59Speaker 4: Yankee if he said, okay, I'm totally fine with it.
- 16:01Speaker 4: The Dodgers said, hey, we're getting ten times more than
- 16:05Speaker 4: some of the other team's local revenues.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Yes, and that is part of this, and it is
- 16:10Speaker 2: an incredibly meaningful part of this that this development has
- 16:14Speaker 2: even taken place that Rob Manfregot it to this point
- 16:17Speaker 2: with the owners where they are willing.
- 16:19Speaker 3: To do this if there is a cap.
- 16:22Speaker 2: And the reason the Dodgers and the Yankees and other
- 16:26Speaker 2: teams in their positions with these incredible TV contracts would
- 16:29Speaker 2: be willing to do it is because if you get
- 16:31Speaker 2: a cap, you've got fixed costs and you know exactly
- 16:34Speaker 2: what you're going to be spending, and there is a
- 16:37Speaker 2: limit on what you're going to be spending. In the end,
- 16:40Speaker 2: the Dodgers, Yankees, et cetera ultimately have it determined that
- 16:44Speaker 2: that is a better financial equation for them than even
- 16:47Speaker 2: what is going on now. Hard for me to put
- 16:50Speaker 2: my arms around the Dodgers thinking that way because they're
- 16:54Speaker 2: making so much money, But whether it's for the good
- 16:57Speaker 2: of the sport or they just believe long term, this
- 16:59Speaker 2: is the way it should be, that is the decision
- 17:02Speaker 2: they've made. And I actually took to someone this morning
- 17:05Speaker 2: who said, well, why don't they just share their revenue
- 17:07Speaker 2: without a cap.
- 17:09Speaker 3: Well, no, that's not going.
- 17:10Speaker 2: To happen because the enticement, it seems to me that
- 17:14Speaker 2: MLB has given these teams Dodgers, Yankees, etc.
- 17:18Speaker 3: Is do this if we get a cap.
- 17:21Speaker 2: And then the whole financial model changes and changes for
- 17:25Speaker 2: your benefit.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Boom and there it is. Both sides have issues, but
- 17:29Speaker 1: if you really cared about competitive balance, you would share
- 17:32Speaker 1: the money to make sure that the teams feel like
- 17:34Speaker 1: they can spend enough on the players. That is part
- 17:36Speaker 1: of it. But they're not going to do that in
- 17:37Speaker 1: that case, right and same thing. The players aren't giving

- 18:51Speaker 1: gold others here. He sees the Yankees a lot. We
- 19:00Speaker 1: haven't talked about them much because things are going well
- 19:02Speaker 1: for them, Todd. I mean, when there's nothing crazy good,
- 19:05Speaker 1: nothing crazy bad. You know, no records are being set.
- 19:08Speaker 1: They're just playing ball. They're playing good ball.
- 19:10Speaker 6: They look good.
- 19:11Speaker 1: They look like a playoff team. They look like a
- 19:13Speaker 1: contender for the Division and even for the World Series. Right,
- 19:17Speaker 1: but let's crack open the case for what they could
- 19:21Speaker 1: get better at. So we just run off the articles.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Brendan Coodi, who put out this article, it's too early
- 19:27Speaker 1: to look ahead to the trade deadline for the Yankees.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Just kidding, let's do it anyway. I like that, and
- 19:33Speaker 1: he pointed to the bullpen. He talked to one rival
- 19:37Speaker 1: evaluator who said, lots of bullpen help needed for the Yankees.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Remember last year they sought out many relief arms, Jake Bird, Dovall,
- 19:47Speaker 1: that's how they got Bednar. So let's start there because
- 19:51Speaker 1: I actually think that's by far the top topic with
- 19:55Speaker 1: a team that's trying to get themselves back into the
- 19:57Speaker 1: World Series. Do you agree, Todd Father or is there
- 19:59Speaker 1: something we're missing?
- 20:01Speaker 6: Yeah? I agree, I do.
- 20:03Speaker 5: I think I think every team needs better bullpen pieces
- 20:07Speaker 5: or could use a better bullpen piece. I mean, Doval
- 20:10Speaker 5: has been you know, hit or miss. Bednar hasn't you know,
- 20:13Speaker 5: fully been the same. He likes when people are on
- 20:15Speaker 5: base for some reason. Then he finally figures out how
- 20:18Speaker 5: to give people out. Hendrick's been okay, He's had his
- 20:22Speaker 5: ups and downs. Hill, Tim Hill, Yeah, you can always
- 20:26Speaker 5: I think for the Yankee sake, they can always use
- 20:28Speaker 5: another bullpen piece to get in there and go out
- 20:30Speaker 5: and dominate.
- 20:32Speaker 6: But they're winning. They're winning right now, so that that's
- 20:34Speaker 6: the thing.
- 20:35Speaker 5: If they're winning, not nobody talks about anything else until
- 20:37Speaker 5: they have to. They got their guns back, and Max
- 20:41Speaker 5: Fried still isn't pitching, which is okay. They've still been
- 20:45Speaker 5: doing fine without him. They got Garrett coleback and Rodin.
- 20:47Speaker 5: Rodin still finding himself a little bit. He's getting better
- 20:50Speaker 5: and better each start. But yes, I think a bullpen
- 20:54Speaker 5: piece would bode well for the Yankees moving forward or
- 20:57Speaker 5: later into the season.
- 20:59Speaker 4: Yes, Obviously, a good team is always gonna look to
- 21:02Speaker 4: upgrade their team they play, they keep playing like this,
- 21:05Speaker 4: they'll look to upgrade in some way. And but the
- 21:09Speaker 4: one part Brennan talked about was catching. I think they're
- 21:13Speaker 4: gonna use scouts. Think they're gonna use the next few
- 21:17Speaker 4: months to evaluate possibly a right handed hitting catcher. I
- 21:22Speaker 4: couldn't disagree more. I think j c Escara and Austin
- 21:26Speaker 4: Wells are giving them exactly the value that they want
- 21:32Speaker 4: out of their catching position. Can they find somebody that
- 21:34Speaker 4: receives just as well as two of the top fifteen
- 21:37Speaker 4: receivers in the game. Maybe, But I mean you're talking
- 21:41Speaker 4: about You're talking about like elite catchers that are just
- 21:45Speaker 4: gonna automatically stay with their team. So no, I don't
- 21:48Speaker 4: think it's gonna happen. I don't think they're gonna go
- 21:50Speaker 4: look for catchers. So fans, you know what, right now,
- 21:54Speaker 4: the catching position is a whole offensively in your lineup.
- 21:58Speaker 4: But you have two very elite catchers that the that
- 22:03Speaker 4: the Yankees like it or leave it. The Yankees love
- 22:07Speaker 4: the value that they're adding, and they're not adding to
- 22:09Speaker 4: anything there. So I think it's really a bullpen. And
- 22:13Speaker 4: I think obviously they would love to add based on
- 22:16Speaker 4: some type of injury, but look back in history, Brian
- 22:20Speaker 4: Cashman makes very very few monster moves at the trade deadline.
- 22:25Speaker 4: So let's just realize, is the team you got you
- 22:28Speaker 4: complained about at the beginning of the year. Your team
- 22:30Speaker 4: playing really well, and I think this team with a
- 22:32Speaker 4: few ads to the bullpen could be a World Series
- 22:36Speaker 4: contender in a weak American league.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean it's it's a team that values
- 22:41Speaker 1: catch a defense a lot, just like the Guardians do.
- 22:43Speaker 1: So they're going to focus on that. They're not going
- 22:45Speaker 1: to bring in a guy who hits the crap out
- 22:47Speaker 1: of the ball but has a terrible framing or some
- 22:49Speaker 1: other stat on the defensive side that doesn't work out well.
- 22:51Speaker 1: It's just not their style. So with that, it makes
- 22:54Speaker 1: it really hard to find the perfect guy, right like, yeah,
- 22:58Speaker 1: I mean you know, you know you're this one phone
- 23:00Speaker 1: call and then we'll break because we got our guests
- 23:02Speaker 1: ready on the local radio in New York and New Jersey. Hey,
- 23:06Speaker 1: let's get that Rutchman guy. They already have the other guy, Besio.
- 23:10Speaker 1: So so let's get Rutchman in. You know, we'll give
- 23:13Speaker 1: up somebody.
- 23:15Speaker 4: Nope, it's not happening. The Yankees would have taken Patrick
- 23:20Speaker 4: Bailey had the Guardians not and had had the Yankees
- 23:23Speaker 4: not had their receiving they would have taken them. I promise.
- 23:26Speaker 4: I've seen the meetings, I've heard the presentations. They would
- 23:29Speaker 4: have been like he's ours, thank you, whether you like
- 23:32Speaker 4: it or not. That's just how they were going to
- 23:33Speaker 4: run the organization.
