Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: This Tuesday, President Trump meeting Venezuela's interim president at the U.N.
- 0:05Speaker 2: General Assembly for.
- 0:07Speaker 1: The first meeting since Maduro's capture back in January. It
- 0:11Speaker 1: comes as the administration finalizes a major oil deal with
- 0:15Speaker 1: Venezuela as they work to bring down gas prices. GOP
- 0:19Speaker 1: Senator Bernie Moreno sits on the Senate Homeland Security Committee,
- 0:22Speaker 1: and he joins us now.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Welcome, Senator. So let's get right into this.
- 0:27Speaker 1: There's a possibility, we don't know for sure, but there's
- 0:29Speaker 1: a possibility that when the president goes to the U.N.,
- 0:33Speaker 1: President Trump goes to the U.N. General Assembly, He could
- 0:36Speaker 1: do a set-aside meeting, right, a pull-aside meeting with the
- 0:41Speaker 1: interim dictator of Venezuela, Delce Rodriguez. If you were advising
- 0:44Speaker 1: President Trump, would you advise him to take that meeting?
- 0:48Speaker 1: Or would you say, no, better not, because she's so disliked,
- 0:52Speaker 1: despised by so many Venezuelans?
- 0:56Speaker 3: Well, she's not a legitimate leader of Venezuela. She was
- 0:58Speaker 3: part of the Maduro regime. She's responsible for the murder
- 1:02Speaker 3: of thousands and thousands of innocent Venezuelans. She has no
- 1:06Speaker 3: credibility in her home country. Obviously, she's been somebody who
- 1:11Speaker 3: does exactly what we tell her to do in the
- 1:14Speaker 3: case of the last few months since we've liberated Venezuela.
- 1:19Speaker 3: But I would caution President Trump. She's not our friend.
- 1:22Speaker 3: She's somebody who will tell us what we want to hear,
- 1:25Speaker 3: but doesn't always follow the instructions that she COMMITS TO
- 1:28Speaker 3: THE THINGS THAT SHE SAYS SHE'S GOING TO DO.
- 1:30Speaker 1: YEAH, I WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE DEAL, BUT LET'S
- 1:31Speaker 1: FIRST TALK ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED THIS PAST WEEK IN VENEZUELA.
- 1:35Speaker 1: WE DID LIBERATE VENEZUELA, AND YET IT APPEARS THAT THE
- 1:39Speaker 1: INFRASTRUCTURE OF REPRESSION IS STILL IN PLACE. AN OPPOSITION LEADER,
- 1:43Speaker 1: NOT MARIA, SOMEBODY ELSE, CAME BACK INTO THE COUNTRY AND
- 1:46Speaker 1: HE WAS IMMEDIATELY ARRESTED. AND THEN THERE WAS SUCH AN
- 1:50Speaker 1: OUTCRY THAT SOMEBODY, I DON'T KNOW IF IT WAS MARCO
- 1:52Speaker 1: OR SOMEBODY, DEMANDED HE BE RELEASED. BUT WHAT DOES THAT
- 1:56Speaker 1: TELL YOU ABOUT about what's happening with that repression infrastructure
- 2:01Speaker 1: inside of Venezuela, that that even happened.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Well, it tells you that they're trying to buy their time.
- 2:10Speaker 3: This is obviously a brutal regime. Delcio is at the
- 2:12Speaker 3: center of all this. Cabello is another one. Maduro is
- 2:15Speaker 3: the one guy that's in jail. But, look, the president
- 2:18Speaker 3: understands this. We obviously need them to do the things
- 2:22Speaker 3: that they're doing. And it's only been eight or nine months.
- 2:25Speaker 3: In that eight or nine-month period of time, we've brought
- 2:28Speaker 3: an enormous amount of investment into Venezuela getting it on
- 2:31Speaker 3: the right track. But, again, I'll go back to what
- 2:32Speaker 3: I said earlier, Rachel. Delce is no friend of the
- 2:35Speaker 3: United States, and we should be very, very careful in
- 2:37Speaker 3: dealing with her.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Yeah, it seems like she still hates the United States.
- 2:41Speaker 1: She's probably just waiting out for Trump to leave. So
- 2:44Speaker 1: then let's talk about this deal and its legitimacy, since
- 2:48Speaker 1: it's being made with a communist who hates us, who
- 2:51Speaker 1: doesn't have legitimacy with her own people. Do you think
- 2:54Speaker 1: that the deal is in any jeopardy in the future
- 2:57Speaker 1: because of that? And then wouldn't it be better to
- 3:02Speaker 1: have this deal with a legitimate leader?
- 3:03Speaker 2: Like, why not call for elections? And and and see
- 3:07Speaker 2: who gets elected.
- 3:08Speaker 1: I predict it would probably be Maria Karina. But wouldn't
- 3:11Speaker 1: that bring more legitimacy? Because a lot of people are
- 3:13Speaker 1: concerned about this deal.
- 3:14Speaker 2: There's not a lot of transparency.
- 3:16Speaker 1: There's not a lot of input from the Venezuelan people.
- 3:19Speaker 2: So what do you say?
- 3:21Speaker 3: Well, it's definitely a phenomenal deal for the people of
- 3:23Speaker 3: Venezuela and, more importantly, from our perspective, for the people
- 3:26Speaker 3: of the United States. But to your point, absolutely, we
- 3:30Speaker 3: need to have elections in Venezuela. Obviously, they're not ready
- 3:33Speaker 3: for elections today, but I think it's extremely important to
- 3:36Speaker 3: set a date. I've suggested July 24th of next year.
- 3:40Speaker 3: That's Simón Bolívar' s birthday. Previous elections had it being Chávez' s birthday,
- 3:45Speaker 3: as you know. SIMON BOLIVAR WAS THE LIBERATOR OF VENEZUELA
- 3:49Speaker 3: AND LATIN AMERICA. YES. AND PRESIDENT TRUMP IS THE MODERN
- 3:52Speaker 3: LIBERATOR OF VENEZUELA.
- 3:55Speaker 2: YES.
- 3:55Speaker 3: MARIA SAID THAT. LET'S GO.
- 3:59Speaker 1: MARIA CARINA, WHEN SHE GAVE HIM HIS NOBEL PRIZE, SAID
- 4:02Speaker 1: HE WAS THE.
- 4:02Speaker 2: MODERN DAY SIMON BOLIVAR.
- 4:04Speaker 1: YOU'RE SAYING THAT YOU THINK THE PRESIDENT SHOULD CALL FOR
- 4:07Speaker 1: ELECTIONS ON HIS BIRTHDAY, WHICH WOULD BE WHAT, IN JUNE
- 4:11Speaker 1: OR JULY?
- 4:13Speaker 3: Yeah, Simón Bolívar' s birthday was July 24th, so let's do
- 4:16Speaker 3: it July 24th of 2027. Set that date so everybody
- 4:21Speaker 3: can shoot for that date to.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Get things done. One last question.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Maria Karina Machado spoke with The Wall Street Journal.
- 4:27Speaker 2: She says that she plans to return.
- 4:29Speaker 1: To Venezuela in order to campaign for whenever those elections are.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Do you think she should do so? And if so,
- 4:35Speaker 2: when should she return?
- 4:37Speaker 3: She should go back whenever she feels she wants to
- 4:40Speaker 3: go back. I mean, she's a free person. It will
- 4:42Speaker 3: certainly test the regime's grip on power. You know, they've
- 4:46Speaker 3: gotten dramatically unpopular since the earthquake. If not for the U.S.,
- 4:51Speaker 3: Venezuela would be completely a nonexistent nation. And Delcy, again,
- 4:56Speaker 3: I think is somebody who smiles and waits for the cameras.
- 4:59Speaker 3: tells us what we want to hear. But ultimately, she's
- 5:02Speaker 3: trying to bide her time, hoping that there would be
- 5:05Speaker 3: some crazy Democrat administration that would restore socialism in Venezuela.
- 5:09Speaker 3: It's not going to happen. I think setting that election
- 5:12Speaker 3: date is the most important thing we can do. But
- 5:14Speaker 3: it's also important for everybody to understand, had President Trump
- 5:17Speaker 3: not acted, Venezuela would be a completely failed nation. So
- 5:21Speaker 3: the absolute opportunities for the people of Venezuela, for the
- 5:25Speaker 3: United States, with this oil deal are immense. But we
- 5:28Speaker 3: need to have that election date. All right.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Senator Bernie Marino, thank you so much for joining us.
