- 1:14[SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, we had to take a week off dealing with some dealing with some stuff, but hopefully it starts getting nothing we can talk about right now.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, they'll probably be some podcast episodes, maybe in the future.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, we can talk about it because it's wild.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_04]: Josh can attest to the wild.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_03]: It is.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_03]: Jack is Jack is going through some interesting, very interesting developments right now.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_03]: Jack's good.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_03]: His family's good.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_03]: Like, don't be worried about them.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_03]: They're safe, but
- 1:46[SPEAKER_03]: Just stuff that's just like, yeah, couldn't get to the recording last week, but we will definitely be sharing more as we know more.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_03]: So don't mean to sound super mysterious.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_03]: It's just the way it is.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_03]: Jack, I am up in my recording area once again.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_03]: And if you hear a low hum in the back, that is the air conditioner.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_03]: because I'm actually in some comfort this week.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_04]: So honestly, I'm sorry, it's going to deal with it because honestly right now, like it's not mad into coma like the zombies and I have both the windows open up in my upstairs and there's a good breeze coming through.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and I have an AC unit, but I just haven't played it in.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's like you better do that this week.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_03]: Hundred percent.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_03]: It's got a hundred percent.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_03]: Today's not bad.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_03]: Tomorrow the rest of the week is going to be absolutely awful.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm going to try to get some golf in hopefully tonight.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_03]: I had the best golf game of my life last week.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_03]: I went out with a wish Baker Mayfield and then another friend of ours shot an eighty five and anyone who golf's
- 2:56[SPEAKER_03]: Even just a little bit like eighty five like okay, I mean, obviously on a scale right compared to professionals eighty five's awful, but for me For the average Joe.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_03]: I was happy.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_03]: I was I was hit the ball well, so
- 3:12[SPEAKER_03]: happy about that.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_03]: But, Jack, before we get into our, uh, episode topic, before we even get into our instant grams, man, we've got a little business to conduct over the hiatus over our week break.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_03]: We had some, uh, some individuals, some amazing, amazing people.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_03]: decide to take the plunge and join the pod luck.

- 5:00[SPEAKER_03]: We do not make a habit of that.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_03]: We hopefully going forward will be just fine.

- 6:30[SPEAKER_03]: It's not heresy if you're believable, hard enough.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_03]: This is, don't forget to eat your Instagrams and remember, kids, it's not heresy.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_03]: If you believe it hard enough, that's how it works, baby.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_03]: And boy are we getting into some heresy today, Jack.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_03]: Our favorite Instagrammer is back.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_03]: Amen.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, no.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_03]: He's back with some more choice thoughts.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_03]: Amen.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_03]: And it's no longer just fundamentalism.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_03]: It is absolute rank heresy.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_03]: Amen.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_03]: Let's hear it.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_01]: The Trinity cannot be true.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_01]: Amen.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_01]: It is demonic.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: Amen.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_01]: One of the reasons why the Trinity cannot be true because I am one person.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: Amen.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I am not God, but I am made in the initial God.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_01]: Amen.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_01]: So that is one of the reasons why the Trinity cannot be true.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_01]: Amen.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_01]: God cannot be three persons.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_01]: It's one God reveals himself at different manifestations.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_04]: baby everyone said with me that's modellism Patrick you only knew it was a ticking time bomb before this guy said something like this right it's it was on the spectrum

- 8:27[SPEAKER_03]: That's that's that's that's pretty rough.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_03]: We got just let's finish off the video and then we'll we'll get into the next one But still the same god.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_01]: It cannot be three persons because that will be three guys Amen Repent from your wicked doctrine before First to lay amen

- 9:22[SPEAKER_03]: Repent from your wicked doctrine.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_03]: That's good stuff.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_03]: All right.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_03]: Well, not convinced home skillet.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_03]: Not convinced.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_04]: I'm going to join.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_04]: You can go join area in and as and as cronies over there.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_03]: You can go join.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_03]: Well, it's more like Benny Han where he's like.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_03]: I would like to shock you and maybe I should that is nine of them.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_03]: you're like, whoa, okay.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_03]: Every person of the Trinity has a Trinity in themselves.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, man, what are you been all by now?
- 9:55[SPEAKER_03]: All right, speaking about smoking, Jack.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_03]: these local churches out here be violent, maybe violent man.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_03]: There's some there's some there's some crazy stuff going on in some of these local churches in terms of the productions that's going on.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_03]: I was sent this video probably by four or five different people.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_03]: You might have seen it already.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_03]: It's one of those videos where I can barely make it through.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_03]: I can barely make it through, okay?
- 10:29[SPEAKER_03]: But this church, I believe it's their Easter service.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_03]: I think I could be wrong.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_03]: Just going off of the vibe.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_03]: I feel like it's their Easter service.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_03]: But this church thought that the best way to proclaim the truth.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_03]: of the death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ was not by simply having a service centered around the Word of God, the praying, the Word singing, the Word hearing it proclaimed and encouraging each other in the Word.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_03]: No, no, no.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_03]: They thought what if Easter was Star Wars?
- 11:03[UNKNOWN]: No.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_00]: and your father.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: You are a liar and a father of all lies.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_00]: Don't worry, Leah.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_00]: I have a plan.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_02]: Round control to master me.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_02]: Come and see Countdown and just fall.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_00]: That's why it's Christ in my life That's why it's Christ in my whole world
- 12:05[SPEAKER_03]: Wow.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_03]: So.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_03]: Wow.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_03]: There's that.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_03]: That happened.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_03]: That happened.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, man.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_03]: I don't really have much to say on that one except.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_03]: Stop it.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_03]: Stop it.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_03]: Stop it.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_03]: Just stop it.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_03]: It's not that hard.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_03]: Stop it.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_03]: Just don't do that.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_04]: How are you going to make, how are you going to make an Easter badge and musical with David?
- 12:40[SPEAKER_04]: Like, what did I do?
- 12:41[SPEAKER_04]: I just like, the creative like juices are all like over the place of ridiculous.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_03]: You're not making the gospel better.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_03]: You're making Star Wars worse.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, because the sequels already did that.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm impressed that you're doing it worse than them.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, well Jack that was the shenanigans going around in the local church world
- 13:04[SPEAKER_03]: these days, always fun to see kind of what's happening over, over on the other side of the overall, over on the other, in the other town, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in the normative, in
- 13:32[SPEAKER_03]: quickly it is it is a new favorite segment we we truly do enjoy that's a lot of fun jack my friend it is time at long last for us to get into back into our liturgy series so we have covered and I like I find myself my brain kind of just out out of whack because it's been a while since we've actually recorded so we did um
- 14:01[SPEAKER_03]: Let me find what we were doing here.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_03]: Where is it?
- 14:06[SPEAKER_03]: What did we do last?
- 14:07[SPEAKER_03]: Reading the word.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_03]: Reading the word.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_03]: That's what we did last.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_03]: We did a segment on why reading the word corpently within the Lord's disservice is important.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_03]: Why we think that that is a valuable thing to be included within the Lord's Day service in a liturgical service.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_03]: And today we are talking about
- 14:28[SPEAKER_03]: We're talking about a topic that I think gets a lot, there's a lot of misunderstanding around what we're talking about today and that is the confession of sins, right?
- 14:40[SPEAKER_03]: We believe as Christians that the practice of confessing one sins, both individually and corporately
- 14:49[SPEAKER_03]: within the Lord's Day is a good and biblical and sound, an important thing to do.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_03]: We believe it's healthy, right?
- 14:58[SPEAKER_03]: We believe that
- 15:00[SPEAKER_03]: living a life of confessing, being open and honest with our struggles, bringing those to the throne of grace, letting the gospel cover over those is a healthy and biblical practice.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_03]: And we believe that that practice should be modeled not only individually in our lives, but we should also have time within the Lord's Day.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_03]: to for a time for that to be set aside for that purpose as well.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_03]: So Jack, before we hop into the importance of what I believe
- 15:34[SPEAKER_03]: our services should include the confessing of sins.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_03]: I'd like to go into a little bit on what confessing of sins is not.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_03]: I had the privilege because as we are forming and with a reforming our liturgy for our own local church, I had the privilege of being able to put together a little booklet on the confession of sin and assurance of pardon portions of
- 16:05[SPEAKER_03]: of the Lord's Day service, what they are, what they aren't, why they're important, why we value them, why we're including them into our liturgy, right?
- 16:12[SPEAKER_03]: A lot of fun, I really enjoyed writing those.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_03]: It's not an academic thing, it's much more of a pastoral, I would say,
- 16:22[SPEAKER_03]: Layman view a very practical view of why we do that and I can make that available for people if they want a PDF of that I've already sent that out to quite a few people but I had fun reading it so I'm kind of using that as kind of the template so it's fresh in my head, right?
- 16:36[SPEAKER_03]: But something that I really wanted to make sure
- 16:39[SPEAKER_03]: that our people at Redeemer understood is that when we talk about the confession of sin, when we talk about confessing or confession, just in general, I think often what can happen for a lot of folks is they hear the word confess confessing confession of sins and their mind automatically goes to
- 17:01[SPEAKER_03]: you in a dark booth confessing your sins to Relatus to a Catholic priest, right?
- 17:07[SPEAKER_03]: And that thing that we've seen in so many movies and TV shows, you need to get in there and you know, do the Hail Mary and forgive me father for I've sinned.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_03]: It has been too long since my last confession, right?
- 17:22[SPEAKER_03]: And it's this time where they're bearing their soul and receiving absolution.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_03]: their sins are being absolved through the act of confession, right?
- 17:39[SPEAKER_04]: And they're also, they're also in penance as well, too.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_04]: There's a big difference between, and I'm sure Josh will talk about this confession of sins and and subsequently what we'll talk about in probably next week as well, too.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_04]: versus the the Roman Catholic Church practice of confession with the police.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, exactly exactly.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_03]: So what's often called the sacrament of reconciliation or the sacrament of penance, when when we think of confession in those terms, it is a Roman Catholic understanding of confession, which we in the reform tradition, the Protestant traditions would reject.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_03]: So first off, the confession of sins, especially as it's understood in Protestant and reform circles, it is not a sacrament.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_03]: It is not on the level of baptism and the Lord's supper.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_03]: We believe it's important.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_03]: We believe it's vital, but we do not hold them as sacraments as the Roman Catholic Church would.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_04]: It's also interesting.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_04]: I think this affects us more than you would think because in a state of Washington, at least, there is a law put in place.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_04]: to basically make clergy required participants if somebody comes, if like a church member or somebody comes to them and says, hey, I mean, they're experiencing abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and some sort of manner like that.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_04]: And the Catholic Church, dude, doubled down and said, there's no way on God's green earth that you're letting this law pass.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_03]: They didn't want the law of mandatory reporting to apply to confession to confession booths, right?
- 19:27[SPEAKER_03]: And it comes down, that's just because.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I mean, because people, I mean, the Catholic church says like between you and your priest, like that is the ultimate like nobody's nobody else is going to talk about that.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_04]: And if you've watched the godfather three, you will understand this.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_04]: You see the godfather's reading that scene where he's an Italy and he confesses like to all the freaking mafia murders and everything like that and he still gives him absolution.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_03]: It's yes, but it is it is it is and it's you Serving an authority that is not ours to give right and we will we will get into that a little later right, but
- 20:08[SPEAKER_03]: We confess in the reform tradition, I actually have this down here.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_03]: We in the reform, excuse me, the room Baptist tradition, hold that our Lord Jesus instituted two sacraments for the practice and good of His people.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_03]: Baptism and the observance of the Lord's supper to hold any other practice biblical or not to the level of sacrament is to step out of the bounds of Scripture.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_03]: that is something that we confess is true.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_03]: So to hold the practice, the biblical and good practice of confessing one sins to the level of sacrament is incorrect and unbiblical and placing weight upon that thing that is not meant to be placed.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_03]: What's up?
- 20:56[SPEAKER_03]: Go for it.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I was just gonna talk to you about just how, you know, in scripture, I believe it's first John.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_04]: If we confess our sins to one another, there's nothing about I don't think there's anything in that text that says you have to confess to a pastor or an elder.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_04]: No, remember of not like like an officer of the church.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_04]: No.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_04]: It's more along the lines of what is the practice?
- 21:26[SPEAKER_04]: Why is that important to us in our faith?
- 21:30[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, versus holding up this very official
- 21:35[SPEAKER_04]: Let me go in there and confess my sins and then also on top of the do penance.
- 21:43[SPEAKER_04]: Exactly, exactly.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_03]: And that leads into a second point of what the practice of confessing sins is not.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_03]: So it is not a sacrament nor second does it absolve one of their sins.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_03]: That is a Roman Catholic understanding of the confession of sins is that
- 22:03[SPEAKER_03]: Upon completion of sins being confessed and penance being completed, the confessor is pronounced absolved.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_03]: Other sins I'm reading from the pamphlet that I wrote.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_03]: And they are proclaimed to be in right standing with God.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_03]: This confession of sins is encouraged to be done often, so that the confessor does not live too long without, without absolution taking place.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_03]: There is a great emphasis placed on the individuals need to make sure that their sins are indeed covered through the quote unquote sacrament of confession.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_03]: As with our first point, please allow me to be abundantly clear when I say that this belief is absolutely rejected by Scripture, right?
- 22:47[SPEAKER_03]: And we can cite many verses within Scripture when it speaks about man's only hope for absolute.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_03]: The only person
- 22:57[SPEAKER_03]: that is able to absolve someone of their sins as our Lord saved your Jesus Christ and him alone.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_03]: And we know that from first Timothy chapter two, verses five and six, when it says, for there is one God and there is one mediator between God and man, the man Jesus Christ who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_03]: So when we talk about
- 23:23[SPEAKER_03]: Confessing one's sins and the importance of that.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_03]: We must make sure that we are doing so in the correct context and understanding of it and place it in the correct context and understanding.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_03]: I do not confess my sins in order to be absolved of the sins that I'm confessing.
- 23:42[SPEAKER_03]: I believe wholeheartedly with the apostle Paul, with a whole cannon of scripture, with the reformers that walked before me,
- 23:52[SPEAKER_03]: that the absolute of my sins has been taken care of once and for all through the sacrifice, the death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_03]: That is a truth that we confess, right?
- 24:06[SPEAKER_03]: That we say is true and does not change regardless of our standing, our our our our our our our social economic, our gender, whatever it is,
- 24:19[SPEAKER_03]: that this world would place as defining characteristics when it comes to the gospel of Jesus Christ, all are on equal playing field, and that all are dead in their trespassings and sins, and their only hope for salvation in this life is the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_03]: So when we confess our sins, it's important that we're doing so with the correct understanding of what that confession is, it is not meant to absolve you.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_03]: It is not meant to cleanse you, no priest or pope or pastor has the authority nor are they infused with enough righteousness to be able to absolve your sins.
- 25:00[SPEAKER_03]: That was handled on Calvary and we must have confidence in that absolution, right?
- 25:07[SPEAKER_03]: So that's what confession of sins is not.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_03]: But Jack, when we talk about the importance of confessing one sins to one another, let's get into why we believe confessing one sins.
- 25:21[SPEAKER_03]: Let's just go on on an individual basis.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_03]: Let's go between me and you, right?
- 25:25[SPEAKER_03]: Between two individuals, between two brothers or sisters in Christ.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_03]: Why is having a life that is marked by confessing one sins important and good for the soul?
- 25:38[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I would say part of it.
- 25:39[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, one part of it is accountability.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_04]: The other part of it is trust.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_04]: And then I would say also, too, it's really just living out of the commands of Scripture, too.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_04]: and what's given to us in the new testament.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, I think that those three things kind of working together.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_04]: That's why it's important.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_04]: Some tertiary things I would say is just that you're not living a double life.
- 26:11[SPEAKER_04]: That's very important.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_04]: If you've seen the landscape that we're dealing with in local churches across the nation,
- 26:18[SPEAKER_04]: It's that pastors are leading double lives.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_04]: And you wonder what mechanisms there are for pastors to even confess their sins.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_04]: Because just because they become a pastor doesn't mean they're sinless anymore.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_04]: And I feel like some of us in the United States have a hard time figuring that out or even coming to grips with that or terms with that.
- 26:43[SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, I would say that all of that is in part in order that we would be kind of
- 26:54[SPEAKER_04]: How should I say this?
- 26:57[SPEAKER_04]: Go did by each other to get back on the road to the celestial kingdom and using Pilgrim's progress language that we always use here on the reformatory level.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_04]: So, yeah, I think that confession really kind of glig goes you, especially if it's done in a community sense, like if it's you and I, it still goes us back on to that road.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_04]: in which we're pointed, we're oriented better towards the celestial city towards Jesus versus before we're in a ditch.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_04]: I can think of the illustration.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know if you all have seen this.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_04]: It's either on Instagram or somewhere else where that sheep is just stuck in that ditch and the farmer gets it out and just goes
- 27:49[SPEAKER_04]: Jim's right back into the right back in the bench gets stuck again.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_04]: That's that repeatedly has to happen with us and the church because we're prone to do that.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_04]: Just straight up, humanity is prone to keep repeating ridiculous ugly sinful mistakes over and over again.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_04]: So I think why the word gave us these commands in this sense is to be a people of community, a people of accountability, a people of trust, of a family and not one of, you're living out of fear that you exactly has something to somebody else.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and that's why we do it individually and corporately because the truth that we are proclaiming when we confess our sins to one another and we do that within the Lord's Day service is that we understand our condition.
- 28:40[SPEAKER_03]: We understand our position that without Jesus Christ, we have no hope that the sin that we have requires confession because it required the death of Jesus Christ in order to cover them.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_03]: Now, what we are not saying
- 28:54[SPEAKER_03]: or claiming is that the sacrifice for our sins has to be made a new every time we commit our sins or every time that we confess, right?
- 29:04[SPEAKER_03]: We do not believe in a transubstantiation where the blood of Christ is spilled a new and the sacrifice is spilled a new, every time we partake in the sacrament.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_03]: We don't believe that that is true with our confession either, right?
- 29:17[SPEAKER_03]: We do not believe that our standing with God changes when we sin.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_03]: So what we are not saying is that I am in bad standing with God until I confess the sins that I have committed this day, right?
- 29:34[SPEAKER_03]: God is not in heaven looking at you with his wrathful finger poised for destruction.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_03]: waiting for confession to happen so that he can relent.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_03]: The wrath of God, let's be very clear.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_03]: The wrath of God has been satisfied perfectly and in its entirety by the Lord Jesus Christ on Calvary.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_03]: We do not confess our sins in order that God would be happy with us again, or that He would look at us in favor again, or that He would love us again.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_03]: We confess our sins because we understand yet again our need for the gospel, our need for Jesus Christ.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_03]: But it's very important that we confess our sins correctly.
- 30:27[SPEAKER_03]: Right?
- 30:27[SPEAKER_03]: Because I think what often happens, Jack, this was how I understood confession of sin growing up, right?
- 30:33[SPEAKER_03]: And for a long time, is that I had a very penance-oriented view of confession growing up, that my confession was not true.
- 30:44[SPEAKER_03]: It was not real.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_03]: It was not complete.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_03]: Until I felt bad enough about my sin, and that I had flogged myself on the back enough.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_03]: Right?
- 30:55[SPEAKER_03]: That I had experienced so much grief that I understand the worm that I am before the eyes of God and and I now I have I have felt bad enough and I've paid enough inward spiritual penance that the confession that God looks at the confession and says, okay, okay, I'm convinced.
- 31:14[SPEAKER_03]: You feel bad.
- 31:15[SPEAKER_03]: I get it.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_03]: I forgive you, right?
- 31:17[SPEAKER_03]: That was my understanding of confession for a long time.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_03]: And that is frankly an unbiblical understanding of, yeah, passing our sins is, right?
- 31:27[SPEAKER_03]: Now, I'm not saying that our sins should not grieve us.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_03]: It should, our sins should grieve us.
- 31:32[SPEAKER_03]: It should cause us to wince and feel the sting, because your Savior died for that sin, right?
- 31:38[SPEAKER_03]: It should cause us remorse and grief.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_03]: But where do we go with that remorse and with that grief, right?
- 31:46[SPEAKER_03]: So then I wrote here,
- 31:48[SPEAKER_03]: was what we are saying is that the sacrifice for those sins has been accomplished once and for all in our confession.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_03]: We acknowledge this truth and trust in the work of Christ to cover the sins that we are confessing.
- 32:03[SPEAKER_03]: We, when we sin against the Lord, repentance and confession should be swift.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_03]: We should not wallow or dwell in the guilt in the shame of that sin, but rather we should let the weight of that sin drive us to the cross, where we are reminded yet again of the sacrifice Christ has made on our behalf.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_03]: The practice of confessing sins is one that causes us to continually confess our need for the gospel and the power of the gospel to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_03]: As we know from first John chapter one verses eight nine where it says if we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us if we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all on
- 32:49[SPEAKER_03]: righteousness.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_03]: When we confess our sins, it should be an acknowledgment of the law that we have broken, our inability to keep the law apart from Christ, and how Christ has perfectly fulfilled the law and paid for our sin.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_03]: And this is what I really want to kind of hone in on and kind of kind of cap it with.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_03]: No confession of sin should be without the triumphant proclamation of the gospel at its culmination.
- 33:17[SPEAKER_03]: That is the whole point of confessing our sins to be reminded of how much we need Jesus and how much Jesus has met our needs.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_03]: That is what we have to understand that when we confess in what we are proclaiming is the wonderful truth of the gospel, that this sin that I have committed as vile and treacherous and horrible and filthy and disgusting as it is.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_03]: It is in a front
- 33:47[SPEAKER_03]: to the eyes of holiness and I goes against God's law and I should hate it, I should despise it and look how Christ has covered over that sin and I'm reminded yet again of my need for Jesus.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_03]: Now, Jesus has supplied my every need and that's why we do it corporately.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_03]: That is why it is part of the Lord's Day service and part of the liturgical services because it is reminding the people
- 34:14[SPEAKER_03]: look at how unfaithful you have been, and let that unfaithfulness open your minds and your hearts and your eyes to see even deeper this Lord's day, the faithfulness of your Savior on your behalf, the mediation of Christ on your behalf, the active obedience of Christ on your behalf.
- 34:37[SPEAKER_03]: That's what a true confession of sin does.
- 34:41[SPEAKER_03]: is it drives us to the foot of the cross and it reminds us of how wonderful our Savior is.
- 34:47[SPEAKER_03]: And I don't know about you Jack, but that when I understood, when I came to understand that
- 34:54[SPEAKER_03]: I would say definition, if you will, of what a true confession of sin looks like that it should be swift, repentant should be swift, and we should go to the cross of Christ and be reminded of the gospel.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_03]: It changed the way that I thought not only of sin, but also how God views me.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_03]: It changed the way that I saw the gospel.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_03]: because I no longer was afraid that my confession of sin wasn't passionate enough or it didn't hurt enough.
- 35:25[SPEAKER_03]: It wasn't grievous enough that I didn't have to worry about convincing God that I was sorry.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, on top of it too, I think just the landscape that we find ourselves in in North America is going to advocate for more of a fundamentalist legalistic view of confession.
- 35:49[SPEAKER_04]: You can just see this and how churches operate, how they even just take the Lord's Supper.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
- 35:56[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 35:57[SPEAKER_03]: So, this really, and we'll get into it and we'll talk about the Lord's upper, but how you view confession of sin, extremely affects your view of the sacrament of the Lord's upper.
- 36:07[SPEAKER_03]: You are under percent correct.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, so I mean, do I have to immediately confess in before I take the Lord supper or else I'm gonna get smited?
- 36:17[SPEAKER_04]: Because that's the way in which I've always felt a majority of my Christian life.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_03]: Or do we feel like we need to approach the Lord's supper feeling bad enough about the week that we had, right, whipping ourselves, flogging ourselves to be worthy of taking the bread and the wine, right?
- 36:37[SPEAKER_04]: Very different since probably I think, two thousand one where I started to really get educated on your disposition of when you take the Lord suffer.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, it, yeah, it's
- 36:57[SPEAKER_04]: It'll affect the way that you view confession of sin.
- 37:02[SPEAKER_04]: It will affect your Lord's day and how you view the Lord in the congregation of God's people and even outside the congregation of God's people and just even how you view your disposition to God too.
- 37:17[SPEAKER_04]: Is he always watching over you just waiting for you to scrub so you can confess and he can relent his smiting
- 37:27[SPEAKER_04]: or, you know, are you just kind of, you know, put in fear factor mode so you can obey.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_04]: And I would say that I think a good tool.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_04]: It's just even like the shorter catechism questions that I've been going over with my son.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_04]: Just like who made you?
- 37:48[SPEAKER_04]: God made me.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_04]: What else did God make?
- 37:50[SPEAKER_04]: God made everything.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_04]: Yup.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_04]: He made all things.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_04]: Yup.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_04]: Why did God make me?
- 37:55[SPEAKER_04]: And all things for his glory.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_04]: How can we glorify it?
- 37:59[SPEAKER_04]: Like it leads into the how can we glorify it by loving him and doing an obeying his commandments.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 38:06[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 38:07[SPEAKER_04]: So like those questions really lead into a disposition that you should have.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_04]: and kind of knowing who God is and your disposition to him.
- 38:18[SPEAKER_04]: And what pleases him versus more kind of man-made legalism that, you know, North America has conjured up.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_04]: So mainly in, I think, a big thing is like quiet times.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, sure.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 38:38[SPEAKER_04]: If you don't do your quiet time, you know, get your quiet times.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_04]: I remember that.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_04]: If you don't wake up and do your quiet time, I'm not saying that in and of themselves, quiet times are bad.
- 38:47[SPEAKER_03]: No, quiet times are bad.
- 38:48[SPEAKER_03]: Reading your Bible is encouraged in biblical.
- 38:50[SPEAKER_04]: Let's, let's, let's, let's, let's say when you turn a, a, a, a biblical or a, or a spiritual discipline into a non-negotiable thing you have to do.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_04]: when we're to somehow maintain your status among the people of God and amongst them God himself.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_04]: That's one of its dangerous people.
- 39:12[SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_03]: Well, and we're really good at doing that.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_03]: We're good at taking like we are the best at taking the good gifts that God has given us and turning them into law.
- 39:25[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_03]: That's what we did in the garden.
- 39:28[SPEAKER_03]: All right, God, God gave, God gave all of this.
- 39:32[SPEAKER_03]: Look at all of these things that I have given you to eat and to enjoy and what did we turn it into?
- 39:38[SPEAKER_03]: Well, the one thing that he didn't, that he said, don't do.
- 39:42[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, that's what we're going to focus on, right?
- 39:44[SPEAKER_03]: We love creating law.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_03]: We do.
- 39:47[SPEAKER_03]: And we can do that with quiet times.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_03]: We can do that with our sanctification.
- 39:53[SPEAKER_03]: How we define that.
- 39:54[SPEAKER_03]: What does that look like?
- 39:55[SPEAKER_03]: And we can do that with a confession of our sins.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_03]: Do you believe that your confession of sin is what makes you righteous?
- 40:03[SPEAKER_03]: Or do you confess your sin because you know your righteousness has been given to you?
- 40:09[SPEAKER_03]: Right?
- 40:09[SPEAKER_03]: Those are two very different motivations for confessing our sin.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_03]: One will lead you to despair and give you constant anxiety to making sure that your confession is sincere enough.
- 40:23[SPEAKER_03]: Heart felt enough, grievous enough.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_03]: But the other will bring joy because it reminds you like yes.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_03]: I am a sinner.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_03]: I sin often.
- 40:33[SPEAKER_03]: I fail so much, but look at how Christ has met me and given me what I need.
- 40:40[SPEAKER_03]: Look at how he has supplied my every need.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_03]: That gives such a such a better, much, so much better of a context to confessing one sentence, why we do it individually and why we do it corporately.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_03]: It's important to do it together, to confess those things together, to remind each other, look, we need Jesus.
- 41:02[SPEAKER_03]: And look at how Jesus has given us what we need.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_03]: Last bit I'll read here is that it's important to remember the ways that we have fallen short of God's glory.
- 41:15[SPEAKER_03]: This remembrance keeps us humble and dependent.
- 41:18[SPEAKER_03]: It keeps us dependent upon the work of Christ for our righteousness and our daily sanctification.
- 41:24[SPEAKER_03]: It also keeps us dependent on one another.
- 41:26[SPEAKER_03]: This is why we confess our sins corporately together.
- 41:31[SPEAKER_03]: We confess together that the community of believers is one of the primary means that the Lord uses to sanctify His people.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_03]: We confess our sins to one another and in doing so, we confess our need for one another in this life.
- 41:45[SPEAKER_03]: This practice brings health and joy to the local church as we spur one another on toward love and good works to the glory of God alone.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_03]: That's why we confess our sins together, corporately, in the Lord's Day.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_03]: Because we need that constant reminder that we are all in the same playing field.
- 42:04[SPEAKER_03]: You sin, icing, you fail, I fail.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_03]: But we're worshiping the one that does not fail.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_03]: We're worshiping the one that does not sin.
- 42:13[SPEAKER_03]: We're worshiping the one that has the strength to cover our sins and to give us righteousness.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_03]: And that is what we confess together.
- 42:22[SPEAKER_03]: And that should be the culmination of every true and biblical confession of sin should always culminate in the joy of your salvation.
- 42:32[SPEAKER_03]: If it does not, then you are confessing wrong.
- 42:36[SPEAKER_03]: and you are viewing your confession through a legalistic Roman Catholic view of confession instead of a biblical one that exults Christ in his gospel.
- 42:47[SPEAKER_03]: So those are just some thoughts on the confession of sin.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_03]: Why we believe in some important?
- 42:52[SPEAKER_03]: Why we believe it should be a part of a biblical robust, Lord's Day liturgy.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_03]: And I love it when I see churches have those in their in their Lord's Day.
- 43:04[SPEAKER_03]: It's really, really encouraging to see.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_04]: You can, yeah, you can also do this in different ways, I think.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_04]: We do it.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_04]: I know that my local church does confession of sin.
- 43:14[SPEAKER_04]: in a colon response manner most of time.
- 43:18[SPEAKER_04]: Yep.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_04]: That's cool.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_04]: So sometimes sometimes you can have it part of your liturgy or incorporate it within a particular kind of dynamic of your liturgy as well, too.
- 43:29[SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely.
- 43:30[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I've seen the colon response.
- 43:31[SPEAKER_03]: I think that's really cool.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_03]: I've seen a a prayer of confession.
- 43:35[SPEAKER_03]: I actually put an example of a prayer of confession in the little pamphlet that I wrote where the church it's in the bulletin and they read it aloud.
- 43:42[SPEAKER_03]: They read it together, corporately.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_03]: I love that.
- 43:45[SPEAKER_03]: I really do believe that specifically that portion of the confession of sin, because of how important it is to confess together, should be read together.
- 43:56[SPEAKER_03]: And like Jack said, whether it's a call in response thing, whether it's up on the screen or in the bulletin you all read it together, doing it corporately, I think is really, really important and really valuable because of the truths that we confess together.
- 44:12[SPEAKER_03]: Lots of different ways of doing it, but very beneficial for the life, the health and the encouragement of the local church body.
- 44:22[SPEAKER_03]: Jack, my man, we're back.
- 44:24[SPEAKER_03]: It feels good.
