- 0:00Take your Bible, if you would please, and turn with me to 1st
- 0:03Thessalonians, chapter 5, verses 1 to 11.
- 0:06We're going to conclude this section this morning and move on
- 0:08to the final section beginning next week.
- 0:12But we're looking at what the Bible says concerning the model
- 0:14life and what it means to live a life of alertness.
- 0:18So I'm going to read to you these 11 verses to set them in
- 0:20your mind, and then we'll conclude them this morning.
- 0:24First one of chapter 5 says. Now as to the times in the
- 0:27epics, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written
- 0:30to you, for you yourselves know full well that the day of the
- 0:33Lord will come just like a thief in the night, while they are
- 0:37saying peace and safety. Then destruction will come upon
- 0:41them suddenly, like labor pains upon a woman with child, and
- 0:45they will not escape. But you, brethren, are not in
- 0:49darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief, For
- 0:53you are all sons of light and sons of day.
- 0:56We are not of night nor of darkness.
- 0:59So then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert
- 1:02and sober. For those who sleep do their
- 1:05sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night.
- 1:08But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the
- 1:12breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of
- 1:16salvation. For God has not destined us for
- 1:19wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus
- 1:23Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep,
- 1:30we will live together with Him. Therefore, encourage one another
- 1:35and build up one another, just as you also are doing.
- 1:43Paul wants them to understand their responsibility, so he
- 1:49tells them by way of reminder in the first 3 verses about the day
- 1:53of the Lord. And then he moves on and says,
- 1:57based on what I'm reminding you of, I want you to be responsible
- 2:02in three areas as a witness, as a watchman, and as a warrior.
- 2:08You are a witness because you're sons of the day, you're sons of
- 2:12the light. You are not sons of the night,
- 2:15nor are you sons of darkness. In other words, he contrasts the
- 2:20people who are saved versus the people that are unsaved.
- 2:25People that are in the light are born again.
- 2:27People that are in the darkness are not.
- 2:31And so he contrasts them and encourages them to live
- 2:34according to their witness as lights to the world.
- 2:39This is not a New Testament concept.
- 2:41It was widely proclaimed throughout the Old Testament.
- 2:45In fact, over in Psalm One O 7. Listen to the words of the
- 2:50psalmist in verse #10 There were those who dwelt in darkness and
- 2:55in the shadow of death, prisoners in misery and chains,
- 3:00because they had rebelled against the words of God and
- 3:03spurned the counsel of the Most High.
- 3:07Therefore He humbled their heart with labor.
- 3:12They stumbled, and there was none to help.
- 3:15Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble.
- 3:18He saved them out of their distresses.
- 3:21He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and
- 3:25broke their bands apart. Let them give thanks to the Lord
- 3:30for His loving kindness and for His wonders to the sons of men.
- 3:36So the psalmist describes those who live in rebellion against
- 3:40God, who those who spurn the words of God as those people who
- 3:45wander in darkness, who so desperately need the light of
- 3:49life to shine down upon them. And when God rescues them,
- 3:54that's exactly what he does, because he is the light of the
- 3:58world. He is the truth.
- 4:01And therefore, when he shines his light, the truth is spread.
- 4:06Earlier the psalmist would say these words in Psalm 43.
- 4:11He would say in verse 3, O send out your light and your truth.
- 4:16Let them lead me. Let them bring me to your holy
- 4:20hill and to your dwelling place. Then I will go to the altar of
- 4:24God, to God my exceeding joy, and upon the leer I shall praise
- 4:29You, O God, my God. In other words, when the Lord
- 4:33sends out His light, when He sends out His truth, it leads us
- 4:38in the proper direction. Psalm 119105 says that God's
- 4:42word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
- 4:47Therefore God's Word is a lamp as well as the light, and it
- 4:52leads us in the way of truth. And so Paul picks up on all that
- 4:57and says in First Thessalonians 5, listen, you are children of
- 5:00the day, you're children of the light.
- 5:03Therefore this is your witness, this is your testimony.
- 5:06Live this way because you are not in darkness anymore.
- 5:11In fact, the Bible says over in the book of Colossians, the 3rd
- 5:15chapter, these, these words, Colossians chapter 3, I'm sorry,
- 5:24class chapter one verse #13 For you rescued us from the domain
- 5:30of darkness and transferred us to the Kingdom of his beloved
- 5:35Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
- 5:41You see, the unbeliever is in the domain of darkness.
- 5:44That's where Satan dwells. And therefore they are sons of
- 5:48disobedience, not sons of obedience.
- 5:51But when God saves you, He transfers you from that domain
- 5:55of darkness into the domain of His light, His truth.
- 5:59So therefore we walk as children of the light and children of the
- 6:04truth. And so Paul admonishes those in
- 6:07Thessalonica to live in like manner.
- 6:11And then he says, not only are you a witness, but you're,
- 6:14you're a watchman. You're to, you're to be alert,
- 6:16you're to be sober minded. You are, you are to be vigilant.
- 6:19And then he says you are a warrior.
- 6:22And therefore, because you're, you're a warrior, put on the,
- 6:25the breastplate of of faith and love and put on the, the helmet
- 6:30as a hope of, of your salvation. Such a such an important
- 6:35aspects. And he wants us to understand
- 6:37that, that we're involved in warfare.
- 6:40And this is how you as sons of the of the day and sons of the
- 6:45light live accordingly. Remember, in Ephesians chapter
- 6:496, he talks about the armor of God.
- 6:51There he calls it the breastplate of righteousness.
- 6:53Here he calls it the breastplate of faith and love.
- 6:57There he called the helmet the helmet of salvation in Ephesians
- 7:006. Here in First Thessalonians 5,
- 7:02he calls the helmet the hope of salvation.
- 7:05They're both the same thing, just described in different
- 7:08ways. The the the breastplate of
- 7:11righteousness means that not my positional righteousness is in
- 7:14Christ, but the fact that I'm going to live practically a holy
- 7:17life. Well, how do I do that?
- 7:20By living in accordance with faith and love.
- 7:24The breastplate of faith and love.
- 7:25Faith is believing in what God has actually said, and because
- 7:29you believe in what God has actually said, you live in
- 7:32accordance to it. Love is living in admiration of
- 7:38who God is, because you love Him with all your heart, with all
- 7:43your soul, with all your mind, with all your strength.
- 7:45You want to obey the things that He says.
- 7:48So the breastplate of, of righteousness is the breastplate
- 7:51of, of love and the breast parade of, of faith.
- 7:55In other words, when we believe what God says, we walk by faith.
- 8:00We don't walk by sight. We believe in what God says, we
- 8:04don't believe in what we see. We believe in what God says
- 8:07because that's the truth. And so we live in accordance to
- 8:11the truth of the living God. Paul would say in first Timothy
- 8:146 verse #12 fight the good fight of faith.
- 8:19In secular 4 verse #8 he says I have fought the good fight.
- 8:25I've run the race right. But notice he calls the the
- 8:29fight always a good fight. It's a noble fight.
- 8:32Why? Because we're in warfare against
- 8:35Satan in the Kingdom of darkness and we are fighting for the
- 8:38truth of God's word, the gospel of God and the Kingdom of God.
- 8:43It is the noblest of all battles that were engaged in so many
- 8:47times we we wake up each day and don't realize that we're engaged
- 8:50in warfare, but we are every day is a battle.
- 8:53Why? Because we battle against the
- 8:56the forces of darkness. And so Paul says protect the
- 8:59most intimate part of your life. Protect your heart, put on the
- 9:02breastplate of faith and love. Remember Solomon says in
- 9:07Proverbs Sector 4, guard your heart for out of the flow all
- 9:11the issues of life. Proverbs 423 and how do we guard
- 9:15our heart by putting on the breastplate of faith and love.
- 9:20In other words, we believe what God says.
- 9:23You see, Satan is against you in all kinds of manners.
- 9:27And so he's going to attack you emotionally.
- 9:30He's going to attack you mentally.
- 9:31So Paul says put on the helmet as the as the hope of salvation.
- 9:35Why? Because he attacks the, the
- 9:38head, you're, you're thinking, he wants you to have doubts.
- 9:42He wants you to be discouraged. He, he wants you to be
- 9:44depressed. And Paul says, put on the helmet
- 9:46because that is your, your hope of salvation.
- 9:49You see, we, we were saved. We are, we're, we're justified.
- 9:53We are being sanctified. One day we will be glorified.
- 9:56And that is our hope. That is our assurance.
- 9:59That is our security. That's how we live our lives.
- 10:02We live our lives in anticipation of the
- 10:04glorification of our lives when we see him face to face.
- 10:08And Paul says when you do that, when you do that, you're able to
- 10:12ward off the attacks of the evil one.
- 10:14You'll live as children of the day, not children of the night.
- 10:18You will live as those who honor and glorify the name of the
- 10:21Lord. You will be alert, you will be
- 10:23sober, you won't be asleep. So be a warrior, be a watchman
- 10:29and be a witness. And they won't moves on to the
- 10:33next point. And that is, not only are you to
- 10:34be reminded and not only to be responsible, but you are to be
- 10:38relieved. Look what he says.
- 10:41He says these words in verse #8 But since we are of the day, let
- 10:47us be sober. Have you put on the breastplate
- 10:50of faith and love, and as a helmet with the hope of
- 10:51salvation? For God has not destined us for
- 10:55wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus
- 10:59Christ who died for us. So whether we are awake or
- 11:06sleep, alive or dead, we will live together with him.
- 11:13He says be relieved, for God has not destined you for wrath.
- 11:18Now we know that's not eternal wrath.
- 11:20Why? Because the context of First
- 11:22Thessalonians five is talking about the Day of the Lord.
- 11:24And the day of the Lord is called the day of God's fury or
- 11:27the day of God's wrath. You can read about it in
- 11:29Revelation 6 and Revelation 11, Revelation 16, Revelation 19,
- 11:33It's a day of God's wrath. It's a day of the Lord's fury.
- 11:38It's, it's that, it's that temporal time.
- 11:41We know that we're saved from eternal wrath because there is
- 11:44no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
- 11:47And the wrath of God abides upon those who live in disobedience
- 11:50to the Lord God. We understand that.
- 11:54But he's talking about that temporal wrath, that day of the
- 11:57Lord, that tribulation. This is so important, why?
- 12:01Christ is the bridegroom. We are the bride, and the
- 12:05bridegroom does not want to subject the bride to the day of
- 12:10God's fury. He's not going to do that.
- 12:14That's why the Bible says in Revelation 3 verse #10 these
- 12:18words, I will keep thee from the hour of trial which will come
- 12:23upon the whole world to try them that dwell upon the earth.
- 12:28Revelation 310 so important. I'm going to protect you.
- 12:32I'm going to keep you out of that hour, that hour trial
- 12:35that's going to come upon the whole world, right?
- 12:39Specifically designed for those who dwell upon the earth.
- 12:42That phrase those who dwell upon the earth is used over 10 times
- 12:46in the Book of Revelation. And it always refers to people
- 12:49of the world, not geographically, but people of
- 12:52the world morally. That's how they live their
- 12:54lives. That is their home.
- 12:56That's what they love. They love the world.
- 12:58And the hour tribulation is designed for the unbeliever, not
- 13:00the believer. It's going to come upon the
- 13:03whole world, those who dwell upon the earth.
- 13:05And the Lord says, I'm going to keep you from that hour.
- 13:07I'm going to protect you from that hour.
- 13:09Paul says here in First Thessalonians 5, listen, God has
- 13:12not destined you for wrath. He's not destined you for
- 13:16judgement. He's destined you for joy to be
- 13:20with Jesus forever. And that's what he says.
- 13:23It says this is just so wonderful.
- 13:25Listen, listen how he says it. He says that Jesus Christ verse
- 13:2910 who died for us that whether we are awake or asleep we will
- 13:36live together with him. Paul says he died for us.
- 13:42He died for us over in Galatians chapter one.
- 13:46This is how he says it Galatians one verse 3.
- 13:49Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus
- 13:52Christ, who gave himself for our sins so that he might rescue us
- 13:58from this present evil age according to the will of our God
- 14:03and Father, to whom he or to whom be the glory forevermore,
- 14:08Amen. He rescued us, He delivered us,
- 14:13He saved us. Paul says he died for us.
- 14:18And why did he do that? So that we could be with him.
- 14:26We could be with him earlier. Paul says in chapter 4 these
- 14:30words, and so shall we always be with the Lord for 17 of chapter
- 14:364. That's the essence of heaven.
- 14:39Heaven is a place. Heaven is a, a specific place,
- 14:44but it's more than just a place. Heaven is the presence of the
- 14:49living God. We, we, we tend to forget about
- 14:52that and we forget about what's going to happen when we get to
- 14:56heaven. We're always wondering, well,
- 14:57when we get there, what are we going to do when we get there?
- 15:01It's not about what you're going to do when you get there.
- 15:03It's about who you're going to see when you get there.
- 15:07And so many times because we, we think from an earthly
- 15:09perspective that when we get to heaven, we're going to see our
- 15:12our father or our mother or our brother or our sister, or, or
- 15:16maybe John MacArthur's going to see RC Sprole or, or Charles
- 15:19Spurgeon. You know what?
- 15:21You're going to see them, but that's not your purpose for
- 15:23going. You're not going to see them.
- 15:26You're going to see the Lord. You're going to be with the
- 15:30Lord. That's the most important thing.
- 15:32We forget that a glorified body, a perfect body dwelling in
- 15:37perfect righteousness does not have the same relationships it
- 15:41did while on earth, because every relationship that you have
- 15:44is tainted with sin. But in heaven there is no sin.
- 15:48Everything is perfect. There is no memory of what takes
- 15:52place on earth, in heaven. In hell, you have all the memory
- 15:57of what takes place on earth. That's why there's weeping and
- 16:00gnashing of teeth. But in heaven there is no memory
- 16:03of what happens on earth. Why?
- 16:05Because everything is new. There is no pain, there is no
- 16:08sorrow. There'd be so much sorrow if we
- 16:11remembered what happened on earth.
- 16:13But in glory, it's all about the Lord.
- 16:15It's all about being with the Lord.
- 16:17Think about this. John MacArthur wakes up in glory
- 16:21on on on Monday evening. He dies and and closes his eyes
- 16:25and wakes up in the presence of the living God.
- 16:29How great is that? That's what heaven is.
- 16:33It's the presence of God. To be in his presence is the
- 16:36hope and joy of all of our lives.
- 16:41And Paul knew that and we will be with him.
- 16:46He wants to encourage him that way.
- 16:48He wants to motivate in that way.
- 16:51When we die, whether we wake or whether we're asleep, when
- 16:55Christ comes again, we will be with him.
- 17:01That's the prize, that's the reward, that's the joy, that's
- 17:09the excitement. Yeah, there are crowns, but
- 17:13those crowns will be cast at the feet of the Lamb, at the feet of
- 17:18the Lord. Why?
- 17:20Because the only reason we have a crown is because of what
- 17:23Christ has done in our lives. And so we're just going to give
- 17:26him back to him because he receives all the glory and all
- 17:30the honor and all the praise. And Paul says God is not
- 17:36destined us for wrath. Why?
- 17:38Because he delivered us. He saved us.
- 17:41He rescued us so that whether we wake or sleep, that one day we
- 17:46will be with him. That's the greatest of all
- 17:53relief, knowing that Christ in his presence is my destiny.
- 18:01And then he says, I want you to be reliable.
- 18:04Verse 11. Therefore, encourage one another
- 18:06and build up one another just as you also are doing.
- 18:12Be reliable to be an encourager. Be reliable to, to edify others,
- 18:17to build them up to, to, to encourage them to have the
- 18:21strength and, and the stability that they need each and every
- 18:25day. And you're going to do that
- 18:26through the words that I've given to you.
- 18:28I want you to understand that these words are so important
- 18:31that you are to be engaged not in, in finding flaws in one
- 18:35another, but building up one another.
- 18:37Time is short. Life is so short.
- 18:40We only have this life before us and Paul says in the short
- 18:44amount of time that you have encourage one another, build up
- 18:48one another. That's why the right of Hebrew
- 18:49says don't forsake this so many of yourselves together.
- 18:53Why as you see the day approaching, the day of what the
- 18:57day of Christ that is coming, but to encourage one another, to
- 19:01stimulate one another to love and good deeds.
- 19:03That's why we gathered together to to be involved in each
- 19:06other's lives, to to motivate one another to move each other
- 19:10on to action. And then that's what that's what
- 19:14Paul is saying here in First Thessalonians chapter 5.
- 19:16And then he's going to embark on the very nick section and
- 19:20explain to you how you encourage and how you edify the body.
- 19:26Listen to what he says. He says these words in verse 12.
- 19:30But we request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who
- 19:34diligently labor among you, and have charge over you in the
- 19:36Lord, and give you instruction, and that you esteem them very
- 19:39highly in love because of their work.
- 19:41Live in peace with one another. We urge you, brethren, admonish
- 19:44the unruly, encourage the faint hearted, help the weak.
- 19:47Be patient with everyone. See that no one repays another
- 19:51with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good
- 19:54for one another and for all people.
- 19:56Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing.
- 20:00In everything give thanks for this is the will of God in
- 20:03Christ Jesus concerning you. That's how you encourage and
- 20:06build up one another. And so next week we'll we'll go
- 20:10into those verses and explain to you exactly how God wants to use
- 20:13each of us and each other's lives.
- 20:15But this is so important as to living the model life.
- 20:19Paul says listen in chapter 4. This is the will of God.
- 20:24Even your sanctification that you abstain from sexual
- 20:26immorality, you want to live a model life, live a life of
- 20:30abstinence. And then he says if you want to
- 20:33live a life, a model life, live a life of aspiration to loving
- 20:37abundantly and living appropriately.
- 20:40Verses 9 to 12 of chapter 4. And then he says, live a life of
- 20:43anticipation as to the day of Christ.
- 20:46He's coming again. Because one day the Lord will
- 20:49descend from heaven with a shout and with the voice of the
- 20:52Archangel, and the dead in Christ will rise 1st.
- 20:54And then we who are alive and remain shall be cut up together
- 20:57with them in the air. And so shall we ever be with the
- 20:58Lord. Live in anticipation of that
- 21:01event because it's a nixed event on God's prophetic calendar.
- 21:06And all the while, live a life of alertness.
- 21:09You're going to be sober. You're going to be vigilant.
- 21:11You're going to be a warrior, a watchman.
- 21:13You're going to be a witness. Why?
- 21:16Because you dwell among the people of the night need to be a
- 21:19testimony to them and as you do be an encouragement to one
- 21:22another and build up one another as you are doing.
- 21:26That's just so great because Paul recognizes the fact that
- 21:28they're already doing that. He says I want you to excel even
- 21:31all the more in doing that as you seek to honor the Lord.
- 21:37That's the model life and trust that God will give us the grace
- 21:40to live for the glory and honor of his name.
- 21:42Let's pray together. Father, we thank you for today.
- 21:45We thank you for all that you do.
- 21:46We thank you, Lord, that we can gather together to praise your
- 21:49glorious name. We thank you, Lord, that you're
- 21:51our God. And I pray Lord, for for us as a
- 21:54church, the Lord, we would be the kind of people that live a
- 21:58model life, that live the kind of life that brings glory and
- 22:01honor to your name, that lives the kind of life that truly
- 22:04wants to put you above ourselves, the kind of life that
- 22:07really wants to honor others above ourselves.
- 22:10And that, Lord, we would truly live in anticipation of your
- 22:13coming. Again, Lord, you are coming.
- 22:16We know it's going to be soon. We just want it to be even
- 22:20sooner than we can imagine. We pray that it be today, if not
- 22:25today, tomorrow. But Father, we know that when
- 22:28you come, we will be with you. Our prayer, Lord, is that if
- 22:33there's someone here today who does not know that when they die
- 22:37they'll be with you, the Lord you would burden their heart
- 22:43that they would know to confess their sin, to repent and turn
- 22:48from their evil ways. Give your life to the living God
- 22:52and follow you in obedience for the rest of their lives.
- 22:56Lord, we love you. Thank you for our time together.
- 22:59May this week be the greatest of all weeks because we want to
- 23:04live it for your glory in Jesus name, Amen.
