- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Gino as we get sent for Yukon and
- 0:03Speaker 1: USC and we're doing this today in person in his office.
- 0:06Speaker 1: And you know, I remember the show that HBO did,
- 0:10Speaker 1: and I think it was some of the early segments,
- 0:12Speaker 1: like the intros where you're sitting at your desk drawing
- 0:14Speaker 1: up plays. Well, I'm looking at Geno's off desk here
- 0:17Speaker 1: and he's got papers full of half court diagrams with
- 0:21Speaker 1: certain plays movements that players have. I'm sure you probably
- 0:26Speaker 1: have somewhere hundreds of these somewhere stashed the way, in
- 0:29Speaker 1: all the forty years that you've done this here at Yukon.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, they certainly pile up. Some are just concepts,
- 0:41Speaker 2: you know, some are just ideas, and some are actual,
- 0:45Speaker 2: you know, plays that you want, you know, you want
- 0:49Speaker 2: to incorporate at some point some years. The more plays
- 0:55Speaker 2: you have, the worse your team is. You know. I'll
- 0:58Speaker 2: give you a quick for instance. I remember when we
- 1:00Speaker 2: went to the Final four with Megan's team back in
- 1:02Speaker 2: nineteen ninety one. I think we had like four or
- 1:05Speaker 2: five things that we did. That's it. We never did
- 1:07Speaker 2: anything else. Stewey's teams, generally speaking, we did four or
- 1:11Speaker 2: five things, nothing else. You know. So if you can
- 1:18Speaker 2: find four or five things that you can execute really really,
- 1:22Speaker 2: really well, that's really all you need. But a lot
- 1:25Speaker 2: of times, if you've got fifteen things, twenty things, it's
- 1:28Speaker 2: because you're searching. And whenever you're searching, that's not a
- 1:31Speaker 2: good thing. But there's a couple favorites that we've had
- 1:35Speaker 2: over there's still some things that we do that we
- 1:37Speaker 2: did twenty five years ago, and people might say, oh,
- 1:40Speaker 2: that's not modern day basketball. Well, modern day basketball is
- 1:44Speaker 2: put the ball in the basket. That's why it's called basketball,
- 1:47Speaker 2: basket ball. Put the ball in the basket. So whether
- 1:50Speaker 2: it's you know, nineteen ninety four, or whether it's two
- 1:52Speaker 2: thousand and four or it's twenty twenty four, right, there's
- 1:57Speaker 2: there's a lot of ways to get the ball in
- 1:59Speaker 2: the basket, and some of them haven't gone away. And
- 2:02Speaker 2: I enjoy coming up with new ideas, but I also
- 2:05Speaker 2: enjoy bringing back the old stuff because people are forgotten
- 2:10Speaker 2: about it and all these young coaches didn't even know
- 2:13Speaker 2: it existed, you know, so it's kind of fun fun
- 2:17Speaker 2: to tinker with that stuff. Do you do it?
- 2:19Speaker 1: I mean, obviously you probably do all this stuff based
- 2:21Speaker 1: on what your personnel is too. I would think.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Yeah, And for instance, my ideas generally don't work very
- 2:29Speaker 2: well unless we have a four man that can really, really,
- 2:36Speaker 2: really play. I think that's why some of the stuff
- 2:39Speaker 2: that we do now our offense can look so good
- 2:41Speaker 2: is because you know somebody like Sarah. To me, the
- 2:45Speaker 2: big thing is your guards are going to have the
- 2:51Speaker 2: ball a lot, right, But here's where the defense goes
- 2:55Speaker 2: to die when you throw your ball. When you throw
- 2:57Speaker 2: the ball to one of your big guys, and if
- 3:00Speaker 2: all they can do is shoot it, then you're gonna
- 3:03Speaker 2: have a bad team. But if they can handle the
- 3:06Speaker 2: ball like a guard, you know, you can use them
- 3:09Speaker 2: as an inbounder. You put him in the middle of
- 3:12Speaker 2: you know, against the press, you you can put him
- 3:16Speaker 2: in the middle and run four people around them. You
- 3:20Speaker 2: can create spacing for your if you have you can
- 3:23Speaker 2: post anybody you want up because that guy's dragging the
- 3:26Speaker 2: other team's big guy out of the lane. So I
- 3:28Speaker 2: think even those years when you don't have a great guard,
- 3:33Speaker 2: if you have a great foreman. Let's go back to
- 3:37Speaker 2: nineteen eighty five, eighty six, eighty seven, eighty eight, right,
- 3:41Speaker 2: Megan Patterson, Rebecca Lobo to Carol Walters, you know, megan
- 3:48Speaker 2: to carry mayoed Tina Tuck to Stewie Stewie to Stephanie Dolson.
- 4:00Speaker 2: You know, you just keep going down the line and
- 4:03Speaker 2: you start to realize that when you do have somebody
- 4:08Speaker 2: like that, you've got somebody special and the other Sometimes
- 4:13Speaker 2: the other people don't realize it because the other guy
- 4:16Speaker 2: gets more attention. But it's actually that guy that makes
- 4:19Speaker 2: everything work. And I remember one time when somebody said
- 4:26Speaker 2: your team is unbeatable, and I said, well, I would
- 4:30Speaker 2: think so. I said, we have the best guard in
- 4:33Speaker 2: America renamed Montgomery. We have the best center in the
- 4:37Speaker 2: country in Tina Charles, and oh yeah, we have the
- 4:40Speaker 2: best player in the country in my war. So when
- 4:44Speaker 2: you can fill three spots, then you have a super
- 4:48Speaker 2: natural team two, you have a chance to win almost
- 4:52Speaker 2: a lot. The whole thing. You had a third guy
- 4:55Speaker 2: in there, man, and you become almost invincible.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Yeah, reason why they won seventy eight in a row
- 5:01Speaker 1: back to back underfeet a national championship. Speaking of Maya
- 5:05Speaker 1: and Sue, you're potentially going to have two of your
- 5:08Speaker 1: all time top five players in the Hall of Fame
- 5:11Speaker 1: this fall. That's a good problem to have.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, when I found out at first, I was like,
- 5:21Speaker 2: wait a minute, Sue can't get in. She hasn't been
- 5:23Speaker 2: down five years. And you know, I was I was
- 5:27Speaker 2: told that they changed the criteria. It was really like
- 5:35Speaker 2: a moment for me of wow that you know, when
- 5:45Speaker 2: they were seventeen and they decided to come to Yukon.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Who could ever predict this, Who could ever imagine this,
- 5:53Speaker 2: you know, who could say, yeah, yeah, yeah, this is
- 6:00Speaker 2: this is automatic. It's actually it's funny. It's actually a
- 6:08Speaker 2: better feeling than when I got a phone call saying
- 6:12Speaker 2: I was in, because it's like it's like when you're
- 6:16Speaker 2: a parent and something great happens to you, doesn't quite
- 6:19Speaker 2: feel as good as when something great happens to your kids.
- 6:22Speaker 2: You know, like when your kids are born, Yeah that's
- 6:26Speaker 2: a big deal, but when your kids have kids, that's
- 6:28Speaker 2: a huge deal. You know. So that's kind of how
- 6:31Speaker 2: I felt today.
- 6:32Speaker 1: All right, final segment with Gino. Oh yeah, there's a
- 6:35Speaker 1: big game tomorrow night. We'll preview that and we'll go
- 6:37Speaker 1: through the injuries. Because it's still a problem with the Huskies.
- 6:41Speaker 1: As you're listening to you kind of women's basketball coaches
- 6:43Speaker 1: show on Learfield to stay with us.
