- 0:00The Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 2, verses 47 to 48, as translated
- 0:06by Sri Aurobindo states quote Thou hast a right to action, but
- 0:12only to action, never to its fruits.
- 0:16Let not the fruits of thy works be thy motive, neither let there
- 0:20be in thee any attachment to inactivity fixed in yoga, to thy
- 0:26actions having abandoned attachment, having become equal
- 0:31in failure and success. For it is equality that is meant
- 0:37by yoga. End Quote.
- 0:41For the most part, we act in the world an expectation of some
- 0:45result or benefit accruing to us.
- 0:48This benefit may be something tangible in the form of income,
- 0:53family or material possessions, or it may be something not
- 0:58directly tangible but perceived as a benefit to our ego or
- 1:03convertible over time into tangible results such as social
- 1:08power, prestige, fame, gratification of desires,
- 1:13etcetera. We become transactional in the
- 1:18way we perceive things. If we do something, we want to
- 1:22get something positive back sooner or later.
- 1:26The transactions can be quite subtle.
- 1:30In many instances, we enjoy praise and positive
- 1:33encouragement from others for what we do or how we speak or
- 1:37act. If we are seeking the fruits of
- 1:40our acts, we may tend to respond with a sense of anger,
- 1:44frustration or hostility of someone gives us back negative
- 1:49fruits or feedback such as direct criticism.
- 1:54We may then discontinue what we were doing in relation to those
- 1:57individuals since the feedback we received was not encouraging.
- 2:03The ego will try to ensure that it gets credit for what it does.
- 2:09Even anonymous actions can create a positive feedback to
- 2:12the ego for its selflessness. The same type of ego support
- 2:18that we seek for individually also applies to the group's
- 2:23functions and collective efforts we undertake.
- 2:27We desire to see the work we are doing recognized and supported.
- 2:33In each of these cases, while we may have larger aspirations,
- 2:37motives, and goals, the ego tries to insert itself and gain
- 2:41benefits, recognition, and support.
- 2:46If we become upset or despondent about a lack of positive
- 2:50recognition, we can be sure that the ego is involved.
- 2:57We train our children to do positive things through a
- 2:59process of reward and punishment.
- 3:01Generally, we define what is good and what is bad and assign
- 3:07results that align with these good or bad definitions.
- 3:11We thus create a transactional viewpoint that expects a return.
- 3:17We take this to our more mature reflections, either as our path
- 3:21to heaven or hell, or as a return of karmic consequence
- 3:26upon us, acting without expectation of any benefit to
- 3:31ourselves and regardless of possible negative consequences
- 3:35to ourselves, based solely on a principle to be upheld.
- 3:39To carry out the larger divine intention is the attitude of the
- 3:45divine worker as described in the Gita, the Mother writes
- 3:50quote. When you begin to advance
- 3:54towards inner and outer perfection, the difficulties
- 3:57start at the same time. I have very often heard people
- 4:01saying, Oh, now that I am trying to be good, everybody seems to
- 4:06be bad to me. But this is precisely to teach
- 4:10you that one should not be good with an interested motive.
- 4:14One should not be good so that others will be good to you.
- 4:18One must be good for the sake of being good.
- 4:21It is always the same. Lesson 1 must do as well as one
- 4:25can, the best one can, but without expecting a result,
- 4:30without doing it with a view to the result.
- 4:34Just this attitude to expect a reward for good action to become
- 4:39good, because one thinks that this will make life easier,
- 4:43takes away all value from the good action.
- 4:48You must be good for the love of goodness, you must be just for
- 4:53the love of justice, you must be pure for the love of purity, and
- 4:59you must be disinterested for the love of disinterestedness.
- 5:04Then you are sure to advance on the way.
