- 0:00Speaker 1: LibriVox dot org. The crews of the Noah's Ark by
- 0:04Speaker 1: David Cory repairs A Hoy, a hoy, mount ararat. Now
- 0:10Speaker 1: we know where we are at. Run the ark up
- 0:13Speaker 1: high and dry, close against the bright blue sky. Not
- 0:17Speaker 1: a bit of it, shouted Captain Noah, looking up at
- 0:21Speaker 1: the weather cock. I don't propose to take any chances
- 0:24Speaker 1: running up that mountain side. Suppose our motor gave out,
- 0:28Speaker 1: we'd be in a nice fix. We'll run up on
- 0:31Speaker 1: the shore and heave too. The ark, obeying Captain Noah's
- 0:35Speaker 1: guiding hand, swept upon the beach and came to a
- 0:38Speaker 1: standstill some two hundred feet from the water. We can
- 0:42Speaker 1: cut all the timber we need for repairs now, said Japhet,
- 0:46Speaker 1: looking over toward a big forest that lay back from
- 0:49Speaker 1: the beach. The animals, too, can have a nice frolic
- 0:52Speaker 1: on the sand. It will do them good after being
- 0:55Speaker 1: cooped up on board ship for so long. And in
- 0:58Speaker 1: a short time the ark was empty and all the
- 1:01Speaker 1: animals were having a fine time making castles in the
- 1:04Speaker 1: sand and picking up pretty sea shells. And after a
- 1:08Speaker 1: while Captain Noah got out his axe and saw, and
- 1:11Speaker 1: calling to mister Jonah and his three boys started off
- 1:15Speaker 1: for the forest, and as soon as he cut down
- 1:18Speaker 1: a tree, mister Jonah and the three boys sought it
- 1:21Speaker 1: up into logs. I guess we have enough now, said
- 1:24Speaker 1: Captain Noah. Guess we'd better start and split them into planks.
- 1:29Speaker 1: This was not such easy work, but after a while
- 1:32Speaker 1: they had quite a pile of lumber on hand. If
- 1:35Speaker 1: we only had a wagon to haul the logs to
- 1:37Speaker 1: the ark, said Captain Noah, wiping his forehead with his
- 1:41Speaker 1: red bordered handkerchief. And just then Marjorie came riding down
- 1:45Speaker 1: the gangplank in the Luloi autobile. I'll take them back
- 1:49Speaker 1: to the ark, she said, And after a while, not
- 1:52Speaker 1: so very long, they were all aboard. Well. By this
- 1:56Speaker 1: time it was pretty dark, and Captain Noah felt uneasy
- 2:00Speaker 1: about the animals, so he stood up on the bow
- 2:02Speaker 1: of the big boat and called out, all the board
- 2:05Speaker 1: for the night. All the board for the night. He
- 2:07Speaker 1: called out again, And then he turned to little Marjorie
- 2:10Speaker 1: and said, I'd never forgive myself if anything should happen
- 2:14Speaker 1: to any one of my passengers. But oh dear me,
- 2:18Speaker 1: when Captain Noah, who had stood by the gang plank
- 2:21Speaker 1: and checked off each animal. As he came aboard, found
- 2:24Speaker 1: that the little red squirrel was missing. He was dreadfully worried.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Goodness me, he exclaimed, If that squirrel has gone off
- 2:33Speaker 1: into the woods, how will we ever find him? Well,
- 2:37Speaker 1: there's no use in worrying, said Missus Noah, who just
- 2:40Speaker 1: then came up from below deck. Come down and get
- 2:43Speaker 1: a nice hot cup of tea. After you've eaten something,
- 2:47Speaker 1: you'll know better what to do. Well, after supper, everybody
- 2:51Speaker 1: felt better, so Captain Noah and his crew came up
- 2:54Speaker 1: on deck to look for the lost squirrel. The moon
- 2:57Speaker 1: was just coming up out of the east, making a
- 2:59Speaker 1: silver path across the water right up to the ark.
- 3:02Speaker 1: As Captain Noah looked over the railing to the sand below,
- 3:05Speaker 1: he saw a little figure walking directly in a silver moonpath.
- 3:10Speaker 1: It seemed to be carrying something heavy, for it paused
- 3:13Speaker 1: every now and then to rest. It's a little red squirrel,
- 3:17Speaker 1: shouted Marjorie. So it is, said Captain Noah. Hello there,
- 3:23Speaker 1: he shouted, Wait and I'll let down the gangplank. Show.
- 3:27Speaker 1: But I'm tired, panted the red squirrel as he crawled
- 3:30Speaker 1: up on deck. This bag of nuts is as heavy
- 3:33Speaker 1: as lead, and then he let the well fell bag
- 3:36Speaker 1: slip from his shoulders to the deck. Don't you ever
- 3:39Speaker 1: stay out as late as this again, sir, said Captain Noah,
- 3:43Speaker 1: pulling in the gangplank and making it fast for the night.
- 3:47Speaker 1: If you do, you won't get surely for a long time.
- 3:51Speaker 1: I'm glad you're back, whispered Marjorie, for we were all
- 3:54Speaker 1: dreadfully worried about you, and this so pleased the little
- 3:58Speaker 1: red squirrel, and gave her a handful of chestnuts. Come
- 4:03Speaker 1: along with me, said Captain Noah. I'm going below to
- 4:06Speaker 1: see what the boys are doing. So Marjorie and the
- 4:09Speaker 1: little squirrel followed the captain without a word, for they
- 4:12Speaker 1: saw that he was somewhat vexed. Below deck, all was
- 4:16Speaker 1: in confusion, for the animals, after finishing their supper, were
- 4:20Speaker 1: trying to find places to sleep. Although mister Jonah and
- 4:24Speaker 1: the boys had made the place as clean as possible
- 4:26Speaker 1: since the fire, they had, not, of course, been able
- 4:31Speaker 1: in so short a time to replace the bunks and
- 4:33Speaker 1: pins in which the animals had slept. Everybody was in
- 4:37Speaker 1: everybody else's way. The smaller animals were squeezed into corners
- 4:41Speaker 1: by the larger ones, and the elephant complained that the
- 4:44Speaker 1: red aunt kept treading on his toes. Order order, shouted
- 4:49Speaker 1: Captain Noah, What are you doing, Jonah? And where are
- 4:53Speaker 1: you boys? He called out, peering into the darkness, for
- 4:57Speaker 1: of course all the electric lights were out and the
- 5:00Speaker 1: hold was in total darkness. Here we are, answered mister Jonah.
- 5:05Speaker 1: We're doing the best we can, and he came out
- 5:08Speaker 1: of the darkness and rested his pitchfork on the floor
- 5:11Speaker 1: while he wiped the perspiration from his forehead. I was
- 5:14Speaker 1: spreading out the straw for bidding ham is giving the
- 5:17Speaker 1: pigs a drink before they go to bed. And just
- 5:20Speaker 1: then the other two boys appeared. What are you doing here,
- 5:25Speaker 1: Jeffe asked the mealy cow, which stood by quietly chewing
- 5:29Speaker 1: her cud. But the Muly cow only said oOoOO. Well,
- 5:34Speaker 1: come along with me. All the cows are at the
- 5:37Speaker 1: other end of the ark. Don't be impatient, said Captain Noah,
- 5:41Speaker 1: for the muly cow was a very gentle creature and
- 5:44Speaker 1: never tried to bud any one with her horns because
- 5:47Speaker 1: she didn't have any. You know, while all this was
- 5:50Speaker 1: going on, Marjorie and the little squirrel stood in the doorway.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Glad you weren't lost, said Sheen, patting the squirrel on
- 5:58Speaker 1: the back as if he were a little that dog.
- 6:01Speaker 1: The other squirrel said, they would go to bed until
- 6:03Speaker 1: you were found. Where are they asked the little red squirrel,
- 6:07Speaker 1: I'm pretty sleepy and would like to cuddle up for
- 6:10Speaker 1: the night. And then he swung his bag of DUTs
- 6:12Speaker 1: over his shoulder and followed shim. But before it went
- 6:16Speaker 1: he whispered to Marjorie that he'd give her some hickory
- 6:19Speaker 1: nuts in the morning. After a while, everything was made
- 6:22Speaker 1: snug and tight for the night. Mister Jonah put away
- 6:26Speaker 1: his pitchfork, and the boys hung up the water pails.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Then a lighted lantern was hung at each end of
- 6:32Speaker 1: the cabin, and the evening chores were done just the
- 6:35Speaker 1: same as if they had been on a farm, you know.
- 6:39Speaker 1: And after that, Margie went up on deck, where the
- 6:41Speaker 1: weathercock was sitting on the flag pole in the moonlight. Oh,
- 6:45Speaker 1: I love to be a sailor and sail the ocean blue.
- 6:49Speaker 1: And here the captain shout a hoy and ordered round
- 6:52Speaker 1: the crew. And when the waves are rolling high, the
- 6:56Speaker 1: wind is blowing strong, I sing my cockadoodle do just
- 7:00Speaker 1: like a sailor's song. Oh, I'm a sailor rooster, and
- 7:04Speaker 1: my name is Shanghai Joe, and I'll sail the sea
- 7:07Speaker 1: from A to Z. I'm a sailor bird. Heave ho. Well,
- 7:12Speaker 1: I'm glad you're so happy, said little Margery. And maybe
- 7:15Speaker 1: she felt just a little bit homesick, for she was
- 7:18Speaker 1: far away from home. And just then missus Noah came
- 7:22Speaker 1: on deck and said, come, madge, it's time for bed.
- 7:26Speaker 1: And then she picked her up and carried her in
- 7:28Speaker 1: your cabin and tucked her in for the night, as
- 7:31Speaker 1: comfortable as you please. And in the next chapter, I'll
- 7:35Speaker 1: tell you what happened in the morning. End of chapter seven,
- 7:39Speaker 1: read by Nancy Cochrane, Gergen, Gilbert Arizona o'gust sixteen, two thousand,
- 7:45Speaker 1: twenty three.
