- 1:44This is the third final in rubber game between these two clubs.
- 1:50Here is Milt Pappas, first pitch of the ballgame. He bonds but pops it in the air. It's going to be an easy out. Pappas is under the ball and has it.
- 1:57Richard on the first pitch tried to bond and popped the ball to the pitcher Milt Pappas.
- 2:02That's one out and here's Walt Williams playing on field and batting second today.

- 3:29Out at first base. Play went from Hickman to Pappas covering on a close play.
- 3:36That's two gone and brings up Mike Andrews. And this will give you an idea.
- 3:41How Andrews is rated by his manager Chuck Tanner. The fact that he is batting third. Usually the best hitter of a ball club is the third place hitter.
- 3:49For example Billy Williams hits third for the Chicago Cubs. Two men are out. Nobody on base. Mike Andrews at the plate. Andrews hitting 385 for the spring game.
- 4:00Had one homer. Twelve runs batted in. Big handsome right handed dotter. Here's a windup by Pappas. The pitch on the way. Swung at a fastball and he missed it.
- 4:10This baseball field. The Cubs home training base. The field is encircled by a range of mountains. Very picturesque setting.
- 4:19Now the pitch. Change of pace. Swung on. Little pop fly. Behind second base. Kessinger going out. Bechard going out. Bechard makes the catch.
- 4:27And that retired was on. Andrews popped to Bechard and short center. One two three nothing across. We move now to the bottom of the first inning. The White Sox nothing. The Cubs coming to bat.
- 4:50I'm going to run down and get a Coke carry. For a beer I think. Going out to the respective coaching boxes now. Down the first base line of the five. Joey Amal-Peteno. The third base number seven.
- 5:04The fourth rally.
- 5:20We're going to the bottom half of the first inning.
- 5:48The fourth inning. Don Kessinger's switch hitting shortstop will be the leadoff man as 24 year old Tom Bradley who stands 6'3", weighs 195 pounds, is taking his warm up tosses.

- 6:44Bradley looks down gets his sign.
- 6:50Ed Herman in the crouch behind the plate.
- 6:53Now Kessinger steps out of the batter's box.
- 6:56Kessinger's had a good spring.
- 7:003-3 11. Now the sign into the wind up here's the pitch on the way.
- 7:05And it's a curveball in the first strike call Bradley started off starting them off with a breaking ball and caught that outside corner. We have another crowd in excessive capacity today.
- 7:17It's a very small seating accommodations here at Scottsdale Park.

- 7:58Two strikes and nothing even really buzzed a fastball caught that inside corner at the belt.
- 8:04Two strikes and nothing.
- 8:06Nobody on nobody out Don Kessinger left handed batter against Bradley.

- 10:00Walt Williams is there and he makes the catch.
- 10:03Kessinger popped to Williams and short left.
- 10:06I told Walt Williams you know yesterday we were assuming it was the wind and the sun that was causing all the outfielders the trouble.
- 10:14But that wasn't it at all. It's this high sky with the ball.
- 10:19There's no background. The ball comes off the bat.
- 10:22The background is a lot of white shirts.
- 10:24And because of this high sky there's no clouds at all to serve as a background.
- 10:30And the players don't see the ball come off the bat.
- 10:34They're more or less groping and searching for it.
- 10:37Never having seen it leave the bat.
- 10:40One out nobody on the pitch on the way.
- 10:42Beckard hits one hard in the left field.
- 10:44A base hit.
- 10:45Glenn Beckard is on there.
- 10:48He really slashed that ball hard.
- 10:50So Beckard on his first base with one out.
- 10:55And here is Billy Williams.
- 10:57What a hitter.
- 10:59Over yesterday.
- 11:03Our engineer Tom Kenfield.
- 11:06Popping with the drinks today.
- 11:09Too bad we don't have a beer sponsor.
- 11:11We could sure add liver plug right now.
- 11:18See what you're missing.
- 11:20Breweries everywhere.
- 11:23Runner at first base one out.
- 11:26Billy Williams digs in.
- 11:28The pitch on the way.
- 11:30Curveball a little bit low.
- 11:31One ball no strikes.
- 11:33One out one on.
- 11:34Bottom of the first inning.
- 11:36Ah there's that great cabrán.
- 11:38Over here to the left.
- 11:39Mamie Hurt.
- 11:41Cheering her heroes on.
- 11:45Now the pitch on the way.
- 11:46We're going bounce ball.
- 11:47Boy what a cut this guy gets every time up there.
- 11:50Billy Williams.
- 12:00Billy hit three twenty two last year with forty two homers and one hundred and ninety hundred twenty nine RBI.
- 12:07He'll go over the three hundred mark in career home runs this year.
- 12:12Left handed batter is Bradley throwing the ball over to Carlos May.
- 12:16Wasn't actually on the back.
- 12:21Now Bradley ready.
- 12:23The outfield plays deep.
- 12:24Here's the stretch the pitch and a fastball is high.
- 12:29Dave.
- 12:30Dave Nightingale.
- 12:31He lost his Florida tan two days in Chicago.
- 12:35He's just rejoined the White Sox to cover for the Chicago Daily News.
- 12:43What do you call that scarf you're wearing around your neck.
- 12:45Apache.
- 12:47I'll blow a kiss at you the way you look at the pitch.
- 12:50Apache country.
- 12:52What's that.
- 12:53This is Apache country.
- 12:54You wear Apaches.
- 12:55I will say you do look sweet there.
- 12:58Oh as he dressed funny.
- 13:05Billy Williams the batter here's the stretch the pitch on the way and at the slow curve outside he walked him and the Cubs have something going here.
- 13:13Runners at first and second with one out and here's the next set of number five.
- 13:18That's all.
- 13:21Santos had a great spring.
- 13:23He hit two sixty seven last year with twenty six homers.
- 13:26He drove in one hundred and fourteen runs the year before he hit twenty nine homers drove in one hundred and twenty three runs.
- 13:33This guy's always around that hundred mark on RBI's.
- 13:37Santo thirty one years old.
- 13:39He's been with the Cubs since 1960.
- 13:41So this is 12th year.
- 13:43Runners at first and second one out.
- 13:46Here's Bradley getting ready to pitch on the way.
- 13:48Swung at a curve ball and he fouled it back and he had a good cut.
- 13:57One strike and over.
- 13:59Beautiful afternoon.
- 14:04The baseball season opens tomorrow in the nation's capital.
- 14:09The senators entertain the Oakland A's.
- 14:12Here's the stretch the pitch on the way.
- 14:14Curving to the dirt blowing outside even the count of the ball on the strike.
- 14:18Baltimore's Orioles like Chicago's White Sox don't open their season until Wednesday.
- 14:26Maybe there's a good old man there.
- 14:28White Sox opening the same day that the world champion do one ball one strike.
- 14:35One Santa waiting Tom Bradley's pitch off the stretch here it is curveball bounced on the ground to melt his play will be the second day for one.
- 14:44And that's the only play they can get as Andrews came up with a low throw.
- 14:48Santo forces Williams from Melton to Andrews.
- 14:52That's to go on.
- 14:56There's a fellow who's come into greatness late in his career.
- 15:00After years of mediocrity.
- 15:02He started back in 1956 with Albany.
- 15:06There's a guy never hit 300 in the minor leagues.
- 15:15Last year though he had some kind of year he had 315 32 homers 115 runs batted in Jim Hickman right handed batter the stretch the pitch.
- 15:25It's a fastball a little bit low.
- 15:28These are the kind of situations Hickman was great in for the Cubs.
- 15:33With two outs the difference between having an ending and being scoreless many of the two out hit he got runners at first and third Tom Bradley 24 year old right handed getting set.
- 15:45Now the stretch the pitch on the way here it is curveball a little bit low and outside.
- 15:52Two balls no strikes. Hope you're enjoying the broadcast wherever you might be.
- 15:58Now the signal given the pitch on the way here it is high.
- 16:06At this point the cassette tape broke.
- 16:09We've missed about an inning during which the White Sox scored a couple runs.
- 16:16We pick it up now with Kenny Holtzman pitching for the Cubs and Joe Pepitone at first.
- 16:25On the suicide squeeze he starts running with the pitch.
- 16:31And the responsibility belongs to the hitter to be sure to bump the ball.
- 16:34Here it is he bumps but foul on his safety squeeze again.
- 16:42One ball one strike. There's a lot of beautiful scenery here on Scottsdale.
- 16:48And the trees and the grass and the foliage and the mountains and some rather pretty girls in attendance also.
- 16:57One ball one strike here's the pitch. He was going to bump but low and outside.
- 17:02What was that Mrs. Hunt what'd you say.
- 17:06I wonder when you're going to get around to a pretty girl.
- 17:12You can't get away with anything up here.
- 17:16I was namely a hunt this great cup fan sitting up before.
- 17:19Here's the pitch.
- 17:20Bump and foul in the air.
- 17:23And what Chuck Tanner is doing here is he wants to stay away from the double play.
- 17:29And so even though he doesn't have the suicide squeeze on.
- 17:32He has had Bradley Bunning hoping that he'll sacrifice Herman the second.
- 17:36And put it all up to B.B. Richard to get both runners home.
- 17:40Now the stretch by Pappas the pitch he's going to run again but it's outside.
- 17:45And it goes to three and two.
- 17:47Ray balls two strikes.
- 17:50Bradley takes a look over at Joe Larnette.
- 17:53One thing you will notice.
- 17:56The White Sox this year.
- 17:58Here's the pitch.
- 18:00And the first baseline.
- 18:02And let it all stay.
- 18:03Now they go to first.
- 18:06That was a smart play by Rudolph.
- 18:07He left the ball rolling hoping it would go foul which would make it a strikeout.
- 18:11But Bradley is credited with a sacrifice.
- 18:14From Rudolph to Becker covering.
- 18:17And it's runners at second and third now will pass quickly for identification.
- 18:21This is the Chicago White Sox baseball.
- 18:24And now Lee Richard starts up.
- 18:30Gary look at that girl down there.
- 18:38This is Harry Carrey with Ralph Poucher.
- 18:40B.B. Richard up there the pitch low and outside.
- 18:43He's got a chance to drive in two runs.
- 18:45White Sox out in front.
- 18:46Runners at second and third.
- 18:47Two away.
- 18:48One ball no strike on B.B. Richard.
- 18:50Chokes up on the bat.
- 18:5321, 22 year old infielder.
- 18:55Now the wind up.
- 18:56Here's the pitch on the way.
- 18:58Swings and he fouls tips and he had a good cut at that one.
- 19:01The count evened up.
- 19:03B.B. from Austin, Texas.
- 19:05He makes his home there.
- 19:06Born in Lafayette, Louisiana.
- 19:09He'll be 23 in September.
- 19:12Louis Alvarado is 21 years old.
- 19:16B.B. Richard was in college at Southern University a year ago at this time.
- 19:21Now the signal given.
- 19:22The wind up.
- 19:23Here's the pitch on the way.
- 19:24Swings and he fouls tips.
- 19:26He's in the hole.
- 19:30B.B. Richard waiting.
- 19:31Two strikes and a ball.
- 19:38Now the signal given.
- 19:42Waiting for the signal is Pappas.
- 19:45Two strikes and a ball on B.B. Richard.
- 19:47The wind up the pitch.
- 19:49Swung on high pop fly.
- 19:50Short left field should be caught.
- 19:52Kessinger going out.
- 19:53Williams coming in.
- 19:54Billy calls for the ball and makes the catch.
- 19:56Richard Pappas.
- 19:58Billy Williams.
- 19:59Two runs scored.
- 20:00There were three hits.
- 20:01No errors.
- 20:02Two men left.
- 20:03And we go now on the bottom of the second with a score.
- 20:06White Sox 2.
- 20:07The Cubs nothing.
- 20:16This will be your last chance to purchase the 1971 Chicago Cup roster.
- 20:21For complete information all the players was old time Chicago Cup records and modern records.
- 20:28All this book many died mainly for gold.
- 20:32The 1971 roster book now on sale at the ticket booth in front of the main entrance to the grand.
- 20:38I died mainly last night.
- 20:40For a guy that was talking about all these 18, 19 year old girls.
- 20:46How come you wound up with two runs 67.
- 20:48That's all I was saying.
- 20:50That guy talking about all these places where you're in and all these things.
- 20:54I'll take you out there tomorrow.
- 20:56Gee I was really disappointed in you.
- 21:01I just found out I talked about this range of mountains.
- 21:24Which encircles the ballpark and making for this most picturesque setting.
- 21:28One range is called the superstition.
- 21:31Well the lost Dutchman goal range.
- 21:40Now many died mainly searching for gold in this range of mountains.
- 21:44I guess that's why they so named it the lost Dutchman goal.
- 21:51Be surprised what you can learn on this program.
- 21:55Here we go bottom of the second inning Johnny Callison leading off for the Cubs first pitch.
- 21:59He swings at a curve and he misses.
- 22:01One strike to no ball.
- 22:03Nobody on and nobody out.
- 22:05An old friend and a great umpire some years ago.
- 22:10Jaco Conlon on hand here.
- 22:12Here's the pitch on the way.
- 22:14Swing off, fly ball.
- 22:15Looping in the left center field for a base hit.
- 22:18Here's Callison around first base hill hole.
- 22:22Callison loops a single in the left center.
- 22:25That will bring up Jose Ortiz who seemingly has won the regular center field job.
- 22:31The next batter number 20 Jose Ortiz.
- 22:34Joe Pepa down.
- 22:38Being ill the last few days or week or so.
- 22:41Ortiz has been outstanding.
- 22:44Three games in a row.
- 22:46He has had three hits in each contest.
- 22:49He's totaled nine hits in the last three games.
- 22:52One at first base, nobody out.
- 22:53Ball game at the bottom of the second.
- 22:54White Sox out in front.
- 22:56Two to nothing.
- 22:57Here's a quick throw to first.
- 22:58The runner is back.
- 23:02Now the signal given.
- 23:06Right hand hitter waits.
- 23:08Here's the pitch on the way.
- 23:10Swung off, fly ball.
- 23:11Center field.
- 23:12Deep going back.
- 23:13Riker.
- 23:14He's there now.
- 23:15Makes the cap.
- 23:17Ortiz flies deep to Rick Riker in straight away center field.
- 23:20One out.
- 23:21And that will bring up the catcher Ken Rudolph.
- 23:24Pressed into regular duty as a result of the injury to Randy Oddly.
- 23:28The Cubs number one receiver.
- 23:30Ball game bottom of the second.
- 23:32Two to nothing in favor of the White Sox.
- 23:36Now the signal given.
- 23:38Ken Rudolph.
- 23:40Right hand batter.
- 23:42Went through the entire season last year without hitting a home run.
- 23:44Here's the pitch.
- 23:46And it's a fastball outside.
- 23:52Rudolph straddles the plate.
- 23:58Now the stretch by Tom Bradley.
- 24:00Here's the pitch.
- 24:01There's a base hit in the center field.
- 24:03Johnny Caligale is rolling deep out there.
- 24:06Riker cuts it off.
- 24:07Throwing in the second base it will be a double.
- 24:11Rudolph doubles into right center field.
- 24:14Riker made quite a play to keep the ball from rolling to the wall which would enable the run to score.
- 24:20And now that brings up a pretty good hitting pitcher in Mill Pappas.
- 24:23With runners at second and third and only one out.
- 24:28Rudolph last year was with the Cubs for part of the season with San Antonio for the rest of the year.
- 24:40So he came through with a double in the right center field.
- 24:43That leaves runners at second and third now with one away and Tom Bradley is going to have to go to work.
- 24:48Mill Pappas will be the batter and he's a good hitting pitcher.
- 24:54Bradley gets set.
- 24:55Here's the pitch.
- 24:56Curveball of beauty in there.
- 24:58Strike his golf.
- 25:00Pappas makes his home and weakens Illinois.
- 25:05Started the year with Atlanta last year with two loss two and then with the Cubs one ten loss eight.
- 25:09Here's the pitch.
- 25:11And it's a little bit low.
- 25:12That evens it up in a ball on a strike.
- 25:16Pappas was a member of the American League All-Star team three different times.
- 25:23Runners at second and third the infield playing back.
- 25:27Here's Bradley pitching off the stretch the pitch on the way.
- 25:30He swings and he misses a curveball.
- 25:33Bradley going for that strikeout here.
- 25:35Don Kessinger will be up there next.
- 25:38We're in the bottom of the second White Sox lead two to nothing.
- 25:42Peanuts Lowry who used to star for the Cubs and then other clubs coaching at third base.
- 25:49Joey Amalfatano who used to be with the Giants coaching at first base.
- 25:55Now to signal Gibbon.
- 25:57Two strikes and a ball.
- 25:59Bradley wants that strikeout here.
- 26:01Here's the pitch.
- 26:02Swings and he foul tips.
- 26:04He's still alive.
- 26:05Two strikes and a ball.
- 26:08Hot sunshine.
- 26:10You don't seem to get a tan here though for some strange reason.
- 26:12It's 105 degrees.
- 26:14You sit out there eight hours and nothing happens.
- 26:17In Florida you get to sit in the sunshine about five minutes and you blister.
- 26:21Wait until they see you, I.
- 26:26Two strikes and a ball.
- 26:28Runners at second and third one out.
- 26:31Infield playing back.
- 26:33Here's Tom Bradley getting ready.
- 26:34Here's the pitch.
- 26:36He struck him out on a high fastball.
- 26:40Pappas goes down swinging.
- 26:42So there's the first strikeout and he got it when he really needed it.
- 26:46Now he's got a tough left handed batter to face and Don Kessinger who's a switch hitter.
- 26:53Two men are out.
- 26:54Runners at second and third.
- 26:57Kessinger with a chance to tie up the ballgame here.
- 27:01The outfield shades Kessinger towards left.
- 27:05They give him a lot of room in right center.
- 27:08Kessinger chokes up on the bat.
- 27:11This fellow's made himself quite a ball player.
- 27:14One of the best shot stops in the game.
- 27:16The pitch swung on late and fouled out of play off to the left field side.
- 27:21One strike and a ball.
- 27:23Kessinger from Forest City, Arkansas.

- 29:00And they called Scottsdale.
- 29:02It's a title we are sure you'll enjoy.
- 29:04And it's for sale in front of the grandstand for only $1.
- 29:08Is that right?
- 29:10Okay, watch it.
- 29:19We're going to the top of the third.
- 29:22Tom Dunleavy used to be a Andy Frayn usher in Chicago.
- 29:28Now works for Senator Barry Goldwater out here.
- 29:32Just give me some information.
- 29:34Number one, they call Scottsdale Chicago Annex, he tells me.
- 29:39There's a tiny people from Chicago making their home here.
- 29:42The most famous range of these mountains I've been talking about is Camelback.
- 29:47Then there's another range called the Mummy Mountains.
- 29:49Another one called the McDowell.
- 29:53We learned something.
- 29:54Here's Wal Williams, first pitch and there's a strike off.
- 29:57One strike and no balls.
- 29:58Nobody on, nobody out.
- 30:00We're on the top of the third.
- 30:01White Sox out in front, 2 to nothing.
- 30:06Hey, a knuckleball inside.
- 30:09That's something that Pappas has developed, apparently.
- 30:19Now the signal given, one, one pitch.
- 30:22It's in there, a strike is called.
- 30:26Wal Williams in the hole now, two strikes and a ball.
- 30:28Nobody on, nobody out.
- 30:30Top of the third.
- 30:31White Sox out in front, 2 to nothing.
- 30:36They could claim the baseball championship of Chicago with a victory here where it comes today.
- 30:41Here's the pitch.
- 30:42Smashed on the ground, second baseman Bechran has it over to first, easy out.
- 30:46One gone.
- 30:48Here's Mike Andrews, he popped up his first time.
- 30:54Former Chicago sports writer in retirement out here.
- 30:59Ed Prel who used to write for the Chicago Tribune.
- 31:03Wonderful gentleman, good writer, good sports writer, making his home out here now.
- 31:10Rick Talley of the Chicago Today along with his running mate Jim Enright of the same paper.
- 31:17Eddie Munzell.
- 31:20On hand, Dave Nightingale.

- 31:44Swings and he fouls it back and boy he had a good cut.
- 31:47Two strikes and a ball, he's in the hole.
- 31:50Beautiful day.
- 31:55In Scottsdale.
- 31:58If my friend Bill Maybeck is listening at the Ambassador East.
- 32:02Have the room ready about 2 o'clock in the morning.
- 32:06Wednesday, technically Thursday AM.
- 32:08Here's the pitch swung on, long drive, center field.
- 32:10Ortiz way back, drifting, waiting now, makes the cut.
- 32:14Ortiz went about 400 feet away for Andrews long drive.
- 32:19Two up, two down.
- 32:21And here's Bill Melton who started things off with a double of a second.
- 32:25Right hand and back.
- 32:27This fellow by the way has had a good spring.
- 32:33He's the best kept secret in baseball.
- 32:36He has 14 RBIs this spring.
- 32:39Here's the pitch foul on a play out of his 20 hits.
- 32:4211 have been for extra bases.
- 32:44Making now 12 of his 21 hits for extra bases.
- 32:49Last year he hit 33 homers, drove in 96 runs and nobody even knew he was around.
- 32:56And like he says, all he ever heard about was the errors he made.
- 33:02And never about what he hit.
- 33:05Not many men hit 33 home runs.
- 33:11Here's Joe DeRoscia, the manager of the Cubs sitting out in the sunshine at the moment.
- 33:15Two out, nobody on, the wind up, the pitch.
- 33:18A little bit inside.
- 33:20Bill Melton, strong right hand hitter.
- 33:26White Sox leading.
- 33:28Out of signal, here's the pitch by Pappas.
- 33:30Swung on, a long drive, deep left field, way back.
- 33:34Might be out of here, it could be.
- 33:36It is a home run.
- 33:39Holy cow, did he give that ball a run.
- 33:42Bill Melton clears the left field wall at the 380 mark.
- 33:46And the White Sox now lead 3 to nothing.
- 33:52As my good friend Jack Brighouse would say, hey, hey.
- 33:57That's better, we're starting to see Carlos Bay first base.
- 34:00Hey Jack, how are you?
- 34:03Get out of here a minute.
- 34:05Jack O'Connor, I was just talking about you a few minutes ago.
- 34:10And the White Sox lead 3 to nothing.
- 34:12Here's Carlos May, takes the pitch inside.
- 34:15One ball, no strikes.
- 34:17Jack, oh, your friends in Chicago will be tickled to death to know how good you look.
- 34:21You look marvelous.
- 34:23I feel pretty good, Harry.
- 34:25That old sunshine is terrific out here.
- 34:28One ball, no strikes.
- 34:30Two men out, a run in, the pitch.
- 34:32Slider a little bit inside.
- 34:34Your son is a big, what is it, a congressman here, isn't he?
- 34:38No, no, a state senator.
- 34:40A state senator.
- 34:43Little did you dream when you were breaking your leg for the White Sox as a player that you'd have the career that you've had and raise a son to be a state senator.
- 34:52Nice things have happened.
- 34:54Yeah, he's a good boy.
- 34:56The only thing I'm interested in right now is the results of Tuesday's election for my good pal Dick Daly.
- 35:03He's been here about seven or eight in a while against that switch hitter.
- 35:07Here's a ground ball hit to the second base, went up with it over to first base in time to retire the side.
- 35:12Hey, Jack, oh, I didn't.
- 35:14You're entitled to your personal opinion, but they can't get equal time because this is our last broadcast and the election will be on.
- 35:21So we'll just forgive you talking in the zeal of the moment because Mayor Daly must be a friend of yours.
- 35:29All we were raised together is the greatest living American in my book.
- 35:35Jack, we were going to talk baseball and we'll be back.
- 35:39Hey, that's a make a swing that's actually good.
- 35:43Let me give the totals here for a moment.
- 35:45One run, one hit, no errors, nobody left.
- 35:48We moved on to the bottom half of the third inning with a score.
- 35:51The White Sox three, the Cubs nothing.
- 35:56Oh, that's great.
- 35:59That's a good one.
- 36:03Wait, is that Miss Dan?
- 36:08Is that her?
- 36:12Hey, Jack, he doesn't need their own.
- 36:16That's kind of a wooden thing.
- 36:20What's this?
- 36:26Something like that.
- 36:31It's warming up in Chicago. It's now 38 degrees.
- 36:39My wife said yesterday it was snowing in Chicago. She's driving on the street and the sun was shining.
- 36:51The batter number 18, Glenn Beckard, second pitch.
- 37:00We're going to the bottom of the third. White Sox out in front, three to nothing.
- 37:04Glenn Beckard will lead it off for the Chicago Cubs.
- 37:06Any political opinions expressed on this program are strictly those of the man expressing them.
- 37:13Here's the pitch swing on a bouncing ball, melting in foul territory fields at strike one.
- 37:19Jacko, I guess the thing you watch when you see a ball game, you watch the work of the umpires more than the players, don't you?
- 37:27That's right. I do. Since I retired playing ball, my whole life was umpiring.
- 37:34And I really love the game and I miss it.
- 37:37But you know, I would love to see the Cubs and White Sox win.
- 37:42Oh, I'd love to see them.
- 37:44It would not be a tremendous series.
- 37:45Oh, it would be tremendous.
- 37:47Here's the pitch to Glenn Beckard now. It's a curveball low and outside.
- 37:52That evens it up at a ball and a strike.
- 37:55Nobody on, nobody out. Bottom of the third.
- 37:58Three to nothing in favor of the White Sox.
- 38:00Bill Melton hit a homer. The pitch.
- 38:03Slow curveball outside. Two balls and a strike.
- 38:08The Cubs, that Pittsburgh ball club, Jacko, you know, they train over in Florida.
- 38:13We saw them all spring long and they're going to be tough to beat.
- 38:16They got some bombers up and down the lineup.
- 38:18Here's the pitch on the way. Swung on a fly ball.
- 38:20Deep right center field going over for McKinney. Going deep, deep, deep. Reaches up and makes the catch nicely.
- 38:27Beckard flies deep to Rich McKinney in right center. One away.
- 38:32Did you know Chuck Tanner, John?
- 38:35Yeah, I did a while ago. Great kid.
- 38:38I remember when he broke into the National League and he's been a high class fella.
- 38:44And I saw him manage out here in Pacific Coast League last year because I go to all the games at night here.
- 38:51And he's done a real good job and he's a very real persona of a young fella.
- 38:58I wish him a lot of luck. He's a kid that had a lot of class about him all the way.
- 39:03I'm sure the White Sox fans are going to like him real well, too.
- 39:07Here's Billy Williams. A pitch. Swung on. Long drive. Deep center going back. Reichard, he's got it.
- 39:12Hey, that ball was really hit on the nose.
- 39:14Jacko, you've seen many great stars.
- 39:19This Billy Williams is a hitter. Must be as good as any of them.
- 39:22He's got a lot of even a swing as you'd ever want to.
- 39:28And Aaron.
- 39:30Enter Aaron, yeah.
- 39:31You know Aaron, I stopped the game a couple of times because I thought he was taking a nap between pitches.
- 39:37He put the bat under his shoulder and I said, you awake, Henry? He said, who? I said, you. He said, what?
- 39:45But with the ball comes over the plate, those eyes pop open.
- 39:48Oh man, how he can swing that bat.
- 39:50Here's Ron Santo, the fine third baseman of the Cubs. Two out, nobody on. Ball game in the bottom of the third.
- 39:56White Sox leading a three to nothing. Here's the pitch on the way.
- 39:59Fastball is in there a beauty of strike is gone.
- 40:02He's having a great year, Harry.
- 40:04This kid looks good.
- 40:05He's a good golf player. He's done it steady. Real good ball fair since he came in the league.
- 40:10Two men out. Santo waiting.
- 40:12He's had a real good spring, as Jacko mentioned. The delivery now.
- 40:15Curbball hit on the ground to the left of Richard. On the run, he's got it one handed. Here's the peg.
- 40:19Nice play to retire the side.
- 40:22One, two, three. A sparkling play by B.B. Richard.
- 40:26Nothing across and at the end of three full innings, the score, White Sox three, Cubs nothing.
- 40:31Yeah, two is going to be good golf here.
- 40:34Chicago White Sox three.
- 40:36Chicago Cubs seven.
- 40:38Make a little money.
- 40:42Folks, we certainly hope you enjoyed.
- 40:45We're going to be right here in Scottsdale.
- 40:49We might be right now.
- 40:51Hardworking.
- 40:56Five years ago, we lost.
- 40:59Whatever you want.
- 41:01Chicago brought the Cubs back here.
- 41:03They're part of the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce.
- 41:06They call themselves the Scottsdale Chargers.
- 41:08A lot of our attendance right now.
- 41:11We're going to stand up and be recognized. The Scottsdale Chargers, please.
- 41:15I'm going to stay at the Ambassadors.
- 41:28I'm going to stay at the Ambassadors to provide as a manager.
- 41:31Make a deal.
- 41:33Well, that's big league now.
- 41:39We're going to the top of the fourth, the White Sox.
- 41:42Right in front, three to nothing. Here's Rick Riker to lead it off.
- 41:44Jaco, naturally I'll be living in Chicago all summer long.
- 41:48You better make a list of places for me to go.
- 41:51Well, I can take you on on that.
- 41:53But well, those fans hear you in Chicago for a while.
- 41:56They'll think they're doing right back there in St. Louis.
- 42:00Those fans love you there. They love you all over the country.
- 42:03And he's going to make it exciting, folks,
- 42:05when he gets down to business and broadcast that ballgame.
- 42:10You think you're in your living room. You think you're right on the ballpark.
- 42:14Thank you, Jaco.
- 42:16The people out here can hear him. When I was up front, I could hear him up there.
- 42:22Are you insinuating I'm allowed?
- 42:24No, no. It's got a good way of delivering.
- 42:27Hey, Pat, how are you?
- 42:29You're exciting. You give them something to think about when the ballgame's on.
- 42:35Not one of those strike and then about two minutes later, ball.
- 42:40When I retired, I'm fine.
- 42:43When I'm out here, I said, who's playing? You know?
- 42:48And ball.
- 42:50Strike.
- 42:53Jaco, you're really too much, you know?
- 42:55Riker just flied out to center field. There's one gone. There's Richmond-Kinney hitting a high pop fly.
- 43:00Callison coming in, makes the catch, and short right.
- 43:03Two up, two down. Jaco, I appreciate the nice words.
- 43:06We've known each other a long time.
- 43:08I've known you for 30 years.
- 43:10I started at 12 and...
- 43:12Of course you know I started when I was only 8 years old, right?
- 43:15I know. You're 38 and I'm now. You and Benny.
- 43:19Jaco, it's sure a pleasure to see you. A real joy. Thank you for dropping by.
- 43:22I really enjoyed being here with you. This is great.
- 43:25Thank you very much. Jaco Conlon.
- 43:28Take me out of Chicago, but you can't take Chicago out of me.
- 43:32He's the greatest advertisement for the city of Chicago I've ever heard.
- 43:36Two men are out. Ed Herman the batter, here's the pitch on the way.
- 43:39And he takes a sinking fastball low.
- 43:42And one of the great men out here in Arizona, one of the great sportsmen, so responsible.
- 43:47He's had so much to do with the team's training out this way.
- 43:51An old friend and a great guy, Pat Patterson, just dropped by.
- 43:55And a pleasure to say hello. Here's the pitch swung on and foul back.
- 43:58How you doing, Pat? Good to see you.
- 44:01Two men are out.
- 44:05Ed Herman the batter. The score, 3-0. Jaco, thanks again.
- 44:09Alright. Okay, buddy.
- 44:12Two men gone. Here's Papas getting ready.
- 44:16The White Sox have a 3-0 lead. Bill Melton, the homers.
- 44:20Melton doubled also. Here's the pitch.
- 44:23Swung on, bouncing ball, and he is fouled on the first baseline.
- 44:26Melton started our two run ending in the second with a leadoff double.
- 44:30Scored when May tripled. May scored when Ryker doubled.
- 44:34Then Melton the homer with two out on the third.
- 44:37So, Big Bill Melton, the White Sox slugging third baseman,
- 44:40has played an instrumental role in the current 3-0 lead.
- 44:45Now the sign given. Here's Papas' pitch.
- 44:48Swung and a high pop foul back and out of play.
- 44:53Two strikes and a ball. You know, Ed Herman lost about 30 fouls during the winter.
- 44:58He can run faster, he can throw better, he can catch better,
- 45:01but he hasn't hit as well.
- 45:05I don't know if there's any analogy to be drawn.
- 45:10Two strikes and a ball. Here's the pitch.
- 45:13Swung on and fouled out of play.
- 45:17Beautiful afternoon.
- 45:22There'll be some big days for the youngsters coming up at White Sox Park this season,

- 47:09And we move along down to the bottom half of the fourth inning
- 47:12to score White Sox three and the Cubs nothing.
- 47:21We're having a broken-edge windshield.
- 47:23You know, I'm worried, though. I was telling these guys about that.
- 47:26Unbelievable odds.
- 47:28And yesterday when I went down, I was sure I was going to see a broken windshield.
- 47:33Two in two days.
- 47:36How you been, Pat? Pretty good.
- 47:38How's everything at Mason? Same old two and three.
- 47:40Yeah.
- 47:42Yeah, the weather's been great.
- 47:44It's been a little better than this. Yeah, you look pretty clean.
- 47:47Hey, Pat, how's the weather?
- 47:49Is Charlie down? Good.
- 47:51Oh, that's a big broke camber.
- 47:53Yeah, they left last night. He didn't really come down.
- 47:55He wasn't down all season?
- 47:57What's so exciting about him going to the game today?
- 47:59It's all right? I'm worried for him.
- 48:01Do you still stay at Mason?

- 48:06Yeah.
- 48:13Boy, this weather has been great.
- 48:19Okay, Pat, you're good to see you.
- 48:24Let's pause for identification.
- 48:26This is the Chicago White Sox Baseball Network.
- 48:33Hey, could I send a message back to Chicago?
- 48:35Could you say hello to all White Sox friends from Johnny Falcon?
- 48:40Johnny who? Falcon.
- 48:42P-A-L-K-A. P-E-L-K?
- 48:44P-A-L-K-A. Falcon.
- 48:46Falcon, all right. Sure.
- 48:48Okay.
- 48:50This is Harry Carey with Ralph Foucher from Scottsdale, Arizona.
- 48:55As we go into the bottom half of the fourth inning, Jim Hickman will be leading off.
- 48:59A young White Sox fan named Johnny Pelka wanting to be remembered.
- 49:04The batter is number 28, Jim Hickman.
- 49:08Here's Hickman. Fouled out his first time up.
- 49:11Ball game of the fourth.
- 49:13Rick Talley of Chicago today will be Ralph's guest on the postgame show today.
- 49:21Here's Hickman leading it off.
- 49:26Remember, the White Sox led 2-0 yesterday until the Cubs exploded.
- 49:30Here's a bouncy ball to Melton.
- 49:31Charges, nice pick up.
- 49:32Hopskip and throw. He's out. Good play.
- 49:36White Sox looking sharp out there.
- 49:39Melton had a tough play. The ball sharply hit.
- 49:41He charged. He hit it on the shorthop.
- 49:44And then threw it perfectly.

- 50:55Here's Jose Ortiz now.
- 50:58Two better outs, nobody on.
- 51:00White Sox leading three to the end.
- 51:03Come on, Dave.
- 51:10Did you ever think of being a nurse when you were a kid, Dave?
- 51:14What did you say, Commander?
- 51:21Two better outs, nobody on base. Ortiz, the hitter.
- 51:25Used to be with the White Sox organization.
- 51:27The pitch, swung on, bouncing ball to short.
- 51:29Maybe we'll get him with a good throw, and he's out.
- 51:33From Richard to May.
- 51:351-2-3 again.
- 51:37Boy, this kid rolling right along.
- 51:39He's retired the last eight in a row that he's faced.
- 51:41And at the end of four innings that remain, White Sox 3, Cubs nothing.
- 51:47Here's the change in the Chicago Cubs lineup.
- 51:50Now going out to pitch, number 30, Ted Holtzman.
- 52:04And here's the scorer late in the fourth quarter.
- 52:07The NBA playoff, the Chicago Bulls 110, Los Angeles 95.
- 52:15And here's another break in the action as I repaired and then changed another cassette tape.
- 52:24Runner at first, two out, ball game of the fifth.
- 52:27There goes the runner. Strike call, there's the peg, and he is into the stolen base.
- 52:32Wild throw on his way to third base is B.B. Richard.
- 52:35There he goes again.
- 52:38Rudolph threw the ball badly, the ball skipped into center field, and Richard came all the way around to third.
- 52:44And how many has he stolen so far this break?
- 52:49That's his 12th stolen base.
- 52:52He's been in 25 games.
- 52:56How you doing, how are you?
- 53:00Charlie, how are you?
- 53:07Here's the pitcher, Mike Andrews, and the curveball is low.
- 53:11One ball, no strikes.
- 53:15The pride of the pink pony, a very popular place in Scottsdale, Charlie Bryant.
- 53:20On hand, here's the pitcher, curveball inside.
- 53:24I don't know whether I should give him that plug, because he's got a great big cub banner in that place.
- 53:33Boy, this is really, that's quite a name, Chicago NX.
- 53:39There are a lot of Chicago people here.
- 53:41Mike Andrews trying to get the run home, the pitch.
- 53:44Bouncing ball to the shortstop's left, Kessinger has it, throws, in time to retire this time.
- 53:50So it is, no runs, no hits, one error, one pass.
- 53:53We move now to the bottom half of the fifth inning with the score still White Sox 3, Cubs nothing.
- 53:59Here's a couple of scores from the NBA Playoffs, both finals.
- 54:03Milwaukee 136, San Francisco 87.
- 54:07Here's another final score, the Chicago Bulls 113, St. Paul, Los Angeles, 99.
- 54:17The Jack Kent Cook probably told them to make it go seven games.
- 54:47Here's some final scores from the NBA.
- 55:10The Chicago Bulls have extended the playoffs into the seventh final and decisive game which will be played in Los Angeles this week.
- 55:18They beat the Lakers 113 to 99 this afternoon in Chicago.
- 55:24Milwaukee won its playoffs, and listen to this, they wallop the San Francisco Warriors by 49 points.
- 55:31They beat them 136 to 87.
- 55:35What are the odds on Luau Cinder being scoreless in that game?
- 55:39He probably got 100 himself.
- 55:44Here's Rudolph who doubled his first time at bat, leading it off to the Cubs in the bottom of the fifth.
- 55:49First pitch a little bit low.
- 55:51Tom Bradley has pitched four brilliant innings.
- 55:55He's got a three to nothing lead.
- 55:57Yesterday the White Sox were leading two to nothing in the bottom of the fifth.
- 56:01And then the Cubs exploded. Here's the pitch low.
- 56:06No balls, no strikes, nobody on, nobody out.
- 56:09Joe Pepitone will be next.
- 56:13We're in the bottom of the fifth.
- 56:16Boy, is that here for real?
- 56:20Now they'll wind up the pitch.
- 56:22Bouncing ball to his left, Milton to his right, Richard a long throw.
- 56:28Out at first base, holy cow.
- 56:32He comes to arguing about it. B.B. Richard went far to his right behind Milton.
- 56:36It didn't look as if he had any chance to throw him out.
- 56:39Then fired the ball across the diamond on the pick up to Carlos May who came up with the ball.
- 56:45For the out.
- 56:48They're arguing about it. Leo De Rocha comes out now.
- 56:53But it will not affect the decision.
- 56:56The photo is thrown out on the great play from B.B. Richard in the hole to Carlos May who came up with a bad throw.
- 57:07The Cubs are claiming that May was off the bag when he took the low pick up.
- 57:12Leo De Rocha and Pienaar's Lowry are talking to Larry Burnett, the plate umpire.
- 57:21I guess they feel that Burnett should overrule the first base umpire.
- 57:25Feeling that he would have seen that May was off the bag.
- 57:29Whatever, Rudolph is out.
- 57:32And here's Joe Pepito.
- 57:35The discussion now, Leo De Rocha, he's calling the first base umpire down the line.
- 57:41And the umpire's making him walk towards him.
- 57:45The umpire at first base is Harold Vann.
- 57:50Now he's talking to De Rocha, Leo with a big two on the back of his uniform.
- 57:55The score three to nothing in favor of the White Sox.
- 57:59Does anybody have a seat?
- 58:02One man out, nobody on.
- 58:04Ball game in the fifth.
- 58:07Joe Pepito waiting to hit next.
- 58:10This gives us a chance to remind you that the White Sox in cooperation with the Chicago Tribune
- 58:17are again offering free White Sox tickets to straight A and perfect attendance students.
- 58:23So if you had perfect attendance during the fall semester or straight A's during the last marking period,
- 58:30be sure to see your school principal for a ticket request bar.
- 58:34The White Sox Tribune straight A program includes Cook County, DuPage County, and all Chicago schools.
- 58:45So Leo De Rocha comes back to the dugout now.
- 58:51Here's Joe Pepito.
- 58:55One out, nobody on.
- 58:59Pepito, very unhappy with the Yankees, very unhappy with Houston.
- 59:05Tickled to death to be in Chicago.
- 59:08Born in Brooklyn, New York.
- 59:11Pepito, 31 years old.
- 59:14Comes get a lot of guys in that 30 bracket.
- 59:18Here's a curve ball and there's a strike off.
- 59:21One strike, no balls.
- 59:23And many people feel that this has got to be the year they win or else it's going to be the last who are off for a while.
- 59:31Because so many of the ball players are right at that same 32, 33 age level.
- 59:45Pepito with a count of one ball, one strike.
- 59:49One out, nobody on.
- 59:51Now the fifth. Curve ball hit on the ground. Bouncing ball, Andrews in. Big hop.
- 59:55Throws to first, easy out.
- 59:57Boyd as Bradley has handcuffed him so far.
- 1:00:01Cubs with their regular lineup in there.
- 1:00:05Now coming to bat, number 11, John Holtzman.
- 1:00:09Both of them are starters.
- 1:00:12And here's Kessinger with two out, nobody on.
- 1:00:17All game in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:00:20Bill Melton will be leading off the sixth for the Cubs and he's been red hot, rather for the Whitesides, and he's been red hot with a double and a homer.
- 1:00:26Yesterday he had three hits, a couple of doubles.
- 1:00:30So here's Kessinger, two away.
- 1:00:33Here's the wind up the pitch. He was going to bump the fastball as high.
- 1:00:43Two men are out. Ball game in the fifth.
- 1:00:49Now the signal given.
- 1:00:52Tom Bradley.
- 1:00:5424-year-old youngster went to Maryland University. Here's a bouncing ball hit to B.B. Richard.
- 1:00:58Hopskipping through, end time. Easy inning again.
- 1:01:02That's a third straight perfect inning for Bradley as pitched.
- 1:01:05He has retired the last 11 men that he's pitched.
- 1:01:08So it's nothing across, and at the end of five to score, the White Sox three, the Cubs nothing.
- 1:01:19Right.
- 1:01:24She's got her knees out there.
- 1:01:27Right on the other side.
- 1:01:34No, no, no.
- 1:01:59Yeah, sliding.
- 1:02:14The batter for the 14, Bill Melton, third base.
- 1:02:23We're going to the sixth. The hitting star of the game so far, Bill Melton will lead it off.
- 1:02:26And now to tell you all about it, here's Ralph Poucher.
- 1:02:29All right, Harry, the top of the sixth inning in Melton, as Harry mentioned, has been one of the hitting stars in this ball game today.
- 1:02:35He doubled and scored in the second inning, and he homered with the bases empty in the third.
- 1:02:41Bill Melton.
- 1:02:45Ken Holtzman came in in the fifth inning.
- 1:02:49The ground ball shot through to third base Saturday. 12 across the infield, and Melton was out in the first.
- 1:02:58You know, the more we see this youngster, Tom Bradley pitch, the more we want to see.
- 1:03:03The batter for the 17, Carlos May, first base.
- 1:03:08That's on Friday afternoon, Good Friday. He is a dander.
- 1:03:13One down. Carlos May.
- 1:03:16He tripled. So did he run, and scored a run in the two on the second.
- 1:03:23All the scoring in the ball game, done in the second inning and the third. Two in the second for the sock and one in the third.
- 1:03:28Three nothing.
- 1:03:31The white side. May takes a strike called.
- 1:03:36Ken Holtzman has not had the kind of spring he'd liked to have.
- 1:03:39He's appeared in five ball games. He is one and four high inside the May.
- 1:03:46With a 5.63 earned run average.
- 1:03:51Ken Holtzman. 117 last year. 117 the year before.
- 1:03:57They've swung on. Melton beat Brightfield. Brightfield are coming on.
- 1:04:00Callison calling for it. Has to lead him on this one. And he's got it on the line.
- 1:04:06Divider number 48 Rick Leiter.
- 1:04:09Callison had to hurry. His pace cuts a little bit.
- 1:04:12Two away here in the top of the sixth inning. Things up center fielder Rick Leiter.
- 1:04:19Doubled in a run in the second inning. And hit the ball well.
- 1:04:24As he flied out in the fourth inning.
- 1:04:31Rick Leiter. Who's the bad next?
- 1:04:36McKinney is right back there. Ken Holtzman said here comes the next pick.
- 1:04:40Fastball stop at step two.
- 1:04:51Kenneth Dale Holtzman from St. Louis.
- 1:04:59He blows the string just a little bit of time outside.
- 1:05:02A ball one strike two count. Rick Breikart.
- 1:05:07Playing in center field in this ball game today with Walt Williams and Leiter.
- 1:05:11Holtzman are making a couple of changes.
- 1:05:17A powerball out of play off the right side.
- 1:05:23Probably will be their opening lineup.
- 1:05:30When they open it home on Tuesday. Let's hope the weather.
- 1:05:34Down ball. Pass the ball. Shortstop.
- 1:05:37It blows. In time he got it by two steps.
- 1:05:41In the inning.
- 1:05:46Three up three down. No runs. No hits. Nobody left down.
- 1:05:49The end of five and a half. It's still the White Sox three and it comes nothing.
- 1:05:56Right to the ice out.
- 1:06:01Oh yeah.
- 1:06:03That's good.
- 1:06:05Right to the pool after the game.
- 1:06:10Right to the pool after the game.
- 1:06:13Whatever it is.
- 1:06:16Right to the white.
- 1:06:19Oh.
- 1:06:24Oh.
- 1:06:29Oh.
- 1:06:51Nice.
- 1:07:02Last seven six things coming up now.
- 1:07:04At Scottsdale Stadium here under sunny skies.
- 1:07:07The temperature from the 80s in Scottsdale Arizona.
- 1:07:10Joel Horland is on the mound now for the White Sox.
- 1:07:15Tom Bradley pitched a brilliant five innings.
- 1:07:19No runs. He allowed three hits. Walk one. Stuck out one.
- 1:07:22And Horland with two spring wins and no losses.
- 1:07:27He's been in five ball games. Pitched 22 innings.
- 1:07:30Earned run average of two point eight six.
- 1:07:33Horland the new Sox pitcher.
- 1:07:35Throwing in some normal crosses.
- 1:07:37Had a note handed to us earlier saying that.
- 1:07:40He mentioned.
- 1:07:42I believe it's the Cubers in Cissna Park, Illinois.
- 1:07:47I have a notice from.
- 1:07:50Randy's parents.
- 1:07:53The number 18.
- 1:07:55One Becker.
- 1:08:04Bottom to six.
- 1:08:06White Sox lead.
- 1:08:09Take home 20 spring wins.
- 1:08:14It's a one to one basis.
- 1:08:25It's a long.
- 1:08:35and he's got Richard and Alvarado and he's rolling.
- 1:08:38He's got a preview of Joe and Harry.
- 1:08:41But Janet Cromwell hasn't made up his mind
- 1:08:44as to which will be number one.
- 1:08:46They're both playing and they're both number one.
- 1:08:48They're going to get the equal sign.
- 1:08:51Billy Williams, wide wall.
- 1:08:53The right side is going to be on play, I believe,
- 1:08:55back in the stands.
- 1:08:57He's got a cut.
- 1:09:03Williams has played in 24 ball games,
- 1:09:06hitting 397.
- 1:09:08Five doubles, two trips, four home runs, 12 RBI.
- 1:09:17A ball player, ball player.
- 1:09:19He's got a special RBI, five points.
- 1:09:22One out, last to the sixth.
- 1:09:25A wide shot leads the club in this weather game.
- 1:09:29Nothing, one ball is short.
- 1:09:31Andrews has made easy toss, easy out, two away.
- 1:09:36Moving up to this from Lonsanto.
- 1:09:42The answer is one of the ten, Rob Beckel.
- 1:09:46Two home runs, 16 RBI.
- 1:09:52The club leader in that little apartment.
- 1:09:55A lot of RBI.
- 1:09:57That's a film with 14 RBI.
- 1:10:02Allison has 12.
- 1:10:04Billy Williams has 12.
- 1:10:06Hal Breeden, 11.
- 1:10:09Hal Breeden.
- 1:10:11A good power winner.
- 1:10:13Danny, I guess, was cut from the club last year's day.
- 1:10:16He's a catcher.
- 1:10:30The next player, number 38, Kenny Holtzman.
- 1:10:34He's a good guy, Joe Hannon, and only the fourth come into the ballgame.
- 1:10:41Mark Ken Holtzman.
- 1:10:43Holtzman is batting in the number five spot.
- 1:10:47When Pepperton and Holtzman came into the ballgame,
- 1:10:49Pepperton batted in the number nine spot in the fifth inning,
- 1:10:53and Holtzman goes in the number five spot.
- 1:10:57Holtzman is not a bad hitting pitcher.
- 1:11:00Two away, running at first base.
- 1:11:04In the last of the sixth.
- 1:11:06Fastball is low.
- 1:11:08Walt Williams in left field for the ballgame,
- 1:11:10Rick Wright in the center, Rich McKean in the right.
- 1:11:14Bill Melton, Zee Richard, Mike Andrews,
- 1:11:17Carlos May around the infield, the catcher is Ed Newman.
- 1:11:20It will open 315 broadcast time on Wednesday afternoon.
- 1:11:25It started as when you tried to check,
- 1:11:27hit the bat, went to the back side.
- 1:11:31Ball to strike one.
- 1:11:38Johnny Callison blew up next.
- 1:11:42Any chance he gets.
- 1:11:45Stop at Sox Park, they've got tickets for this coming season.
- 1:11:48Down ball, third baseman,
- 1:11:50takes the easy toss over to Andrews at second for the force play on Saddle to retire to Sox Park.
- 1:11:55In the sixth.
- 1:11:57No runs, one hit, no hitters.
- 1:11:59One man at front base.
- 1:12:01He had a six inning, Chicago White Sox.
- 1:12:03Three, the Chicago Sox nothing.
- 1:12:05Three, the Cubs nothing.
- 1:12:11Holtz, this year's spring exhibition season is almost over.
- 1:12:15We sure enjoyed having you out here this spring.
- 1:12:18We hope to see you next year.
- 1:12:20Today's payday attendance, 4,158.
- 1:12:24Thank you very much.
- 1:12:264,158.
- 1:12:28That's even bigger than yesterday.
- 1:12:30Doesn't look as big as yesterday.
- 1:12:32Yeah, they seem to be almost about 3,205.
- 1:12:36I think it's friendly and moves close.
- 1:12:42Need a break?
- 1:12:44I can't break it.
- 1:13:10I don't know how you're going to get by.
- 1:13:12Oh, really?
- 1:13:14So proud of you.
- 1:13:16Come back again with this.
- 1:13:18Down to the seventh inning now, the White Sox.
- 1:13:20We'll send up Rich McKinney.
- 1:13:22Followed by Ed Herman.
- 1:13:24And we will see if Portland will bat.
- 1:13:32First batter number 26, Rich McKinney, right field.
- 1:13:36Kenny Olsen, number 30 in the back of his uniform out of the round.
- 1:13:40Scottsdale, Arizona.
- 1:13:46All of our network stations will be looking for identification just a couple of moments.
- 1:13:50Here comes the pitch.
- 1:13:52A swing and a miss.
- 1:14:04Some big days for the kids at White Sox Park.
- 1:14:10When you're coming in, you want to reflect on the pitch.
- 1:14:14When Kenny hits the ball well, he has climbed to left field, to center field,
- 1:14:18and run into left field and right field, now him to left field.
- 1:14:20The next batter number 12, Ed Herman, catch it.
- 1:14:24Feature day is Sunday, May 9th.
- 1:14:26Batting rough day is Sunday, May 30th.
- 1:14:28Bat day is Sunday, June 6th.
- 1:14:30Elm of day is Sunday, July 11th.
- 1:14:32The young students will receive new White Sox colorful red batting helmets.
- 1:14:36We talk about color, White Sox have it in their uniforms.
- 1:14:40Outstanding.
- 1:14:42Drop of the 7th inning, one away.
- 1:14:44Batter Herman.
- 1:14:48Herman has not had a strong spring with the bat.
- 1:14:54Nobody is really worried about that.
- 1:14:56He's pregnant with this, as he certainly is due to come around.
- 1:15:02Olin, too, on the batter.
- 1:15:04Walked and struck out in this ball game so far.
- 1:15:08Olin due to bat next.
- 1:15:10Lefty, Kenny Holston.
- 1:15:12He's in the pitch.
- 1:15:14He's caught up in the short center field.
- 1:15:16Center field, Olin, catch it.
- 1:15:18He's got it.
- 1:15:20He's come a long way.
- 1:15:22Beckard went out, Kessinger went out, and Ortiz made the play.
- 1:15:24Two up and two down in the top of the 7th inning.
- 1:15:28Now Joel Horland.
- 1:15:30Talents pause.
- 1:15:32Pause station identification.
- 1:15:34On the bat of the point, Joel Horland.
- 1:15:36That's it.
- 1:15:38Olin on the first pitch swings and drives a...
- 1:15:58Batter number 9, please.
- 1:16:00This is shortstop.
- 1:16:02Olin gets his number 1.
- 1:16:08Kenny Holston brings up the top of the batting order now.
- 1:16:10Levy-Richard.
- 1:16:14Richard in the first and he tried to bump.
- 1:16:18And popped it up to the pitcher.
- 1:16:20Then he flied it.
- 1:16:22There's a ground ball over the pitcher's head.
- 1:16:24It is Olin.
- 1:16:26He's got it.
- 1:16:32Olin on the second base.
- 1:16:34Ken Holton on the back as he went sliding back in.
- 1:16:36He said he's okay.
- 1:16:38Levy-Richard is on with a base hit.
- 1:16:42And Holton, rounding second base, got halfway to third base and decided he better go back.
- 1:16:48Two hits given by Ken Holston.
- 1:16:50Hit number 6 for the front.
- 1:16:52The white...
- 1:16:56White's off with a cut-fit pitching.
- 1:17:00For Alpha, we may have our first injury of the season here.
- 1:17:04Joel Horland was hit.
- 1:17:06And apparently hitting the leg.
- 1:17:08Back of the leg as he's getting back in the second base.
- 1:17:12A whole group.
- 1:17:14Boy, he's in pain out there.
- 1:17:16You know, the funny thing is, he got up right away.
- 1:17:18Indicated that he was okay.
- 1:17:20Charlie Saad, the trainer of the White Sox, is administering to him.
- 1:17:26But he seems to be in quite a bit of pain.
- 1:17:30And now, a little activity in the White Sox bullpen.
- 1:17:34With the season opening Wednesday afternoon, it's a tough time to get hurt.
- 1:17:44Right-hander Steve Keeley is throwing down the right side.
- 1:17:50And the White Sox bullpen.
- 1:17:52And out of the mound once again for the...
- 1:17:54Still remember, Kenny Holston throwing the...
- 1:17:57Ken Rudolph.
- 1:18:01That big be richard, how are you going to keep him out of the lineup?
- 1:18:04Harry, it's almost impossible.
- 1:18:05And of course, when the coach has to, the problem that Chuck Tanner has with two flying shortstop,
- 1:18:10he's not going to worry too much.
- 1:18:12The big problem is where he plays Richard against certain pitchers over the El Dorado.
- 1:18:19It's a big problem to have.
- 1:18:21I would imagine with opening up with a double header,
- 1:18:24I would be a bit surprised to see El Dorado start the first game at charge stop,
- 1:18:28and maybe Richard start the second game.
- 1:18:31Either way, I think that we've got a fine infield.
- 1:18:35The White Sox, the way we've seen them now in the last couple of weeks, certainly,
- 1:18:40they're going to start the regular season with a strong roll,
- 1:18:42but there's no doubt about it.
- 1:18:44The more we urge people to get their season tickets,
- 1:18:46the more we're serious about that.
- 1:18:48Get out to Sox Park and get those tickets as soon as possible.
- 1:18:56Well, there's one of our big four in that pitching department, Joe Horlitt.
- 1:19:02From up here, it looked like he was hitting the back,
- 1:19:04but he was going into his side, going back into second base.
- 1:19:09That's what we tell.
- 1:19:18Opening day, White Sox Park, Friday, the 9th.
- 1:19:22Of course, it's the Sox against the powerful Minnesota Twins.
- 1:19:27They'll get good tickets.
- 1:19:29Oh, man, he's hurt. He's hurt.
- 1:19:33You know, it could have been that he may have been hit in the back
- 1:19:37or he was sliding back, but he may have hurt his leg while sliding.
- 1:19:58He and Keely have been warming up for the White Sox.
- 1:20:01I hope it's not serious.
- 1:20:03This guy's certainly got it on him.
- 1:20:06Big things this year.
- 1:20:13Boy, I bet he's saying to himself now,
- 1:20:16why didn't I just stop at second base?
- 1:20:19Where did I think I was going?
- 1:20:21It would be easy to second-guess yourself.
- 1:20:24He had rounded second as if to try for third
- 1:20:26and realized that Ortiz's thrill would get him easily,
- 1:20:29so then came to a sudden stop and retraced,
- 1:20:32went back to second base when Sampdall...
- 1:20:34...for Joe Horland.
- 1:20:36Never enough.
- 1:20:38Chuck Brinkman is trying to run for Horland.
- 1:20:43Brinkman is running for Horland.
- 1:20:49We're in the top of the seventh inning.
- 1:20:51The White Sox lead the ballgame 3-0.
- 1:20:55Right about now, with Horland being carried off on the stretcher,
- 1:20:59I would imagine Vicente Romo has moved in to be a starter
- 1:21:02rather than a relief pitcher.
- 1:21:06All right, we're all set to go.
- 1:21:08Walt Williams, the batter, swings, and hits a fly ball out of play
- 1:21:11down the right field side in the stands.
- 1:21:13Walt Williams...
- 1:21:16...the only one that counted.
- 1:21:18Runners of first and second two away here in the top of the seventh.
- 1:21:21Ken Holston, second cup pitcher of the ballgame.
- 1:21:25Bill Pappas went for innings, he looked three runs, four hits.
- 1:21:30Walk one, step out, one.
- 1:21:38Ball one, strike one, they count on.
- 1:21:41Wally Williams, a very, very popular guy in spring training,
- 1:21:45and of course in Chicago.
- 1:21:47Next pitch from Kenny is...
- 1:21:49...a foul out of play back over on his.
- 1:22:01Williams has been one of the hitting stars for the White Sox
- 1:22:04with a winning 3-51 coming into this ballgame.
- 1:22:06He must play the quarter-run game.
- 1:22:09He's back.
- 1:22:13I believe this...
- 1:22:15...many a graph sheet there's 71 times.
- 1:22:1926 base hits.
- 1:22:24...the right side, and a two-nil for an eight hit.
- 1:22:28Right field at Towson, but it's thanks to the foul line again.
- 1:22:30Throw back in, Williams is on second to the double,
- 1:22:33and the run comes in to score.
- 1:22:35Two runs to the score, second to the one run score.
- 1:22:38So Williams is on second base to the double, and the ball is gone.
- 1:22:42Run number four hits for...
- 1:22:44...the batter is number two, Mike Hadroos, second base.
- 1:22:48...second and third.
- 1:22:50...he's got the third base, he rounded him.
- 1:22:53The two came back in third, 10 space.
- 1:22:56By that time, he didn't hit the second.
- 1:22:58Run and it's gone.
- 1:23:00Hadroos has been about three times
- 1:23:04without a base hit.
- 1:23:08Popped out to the second baseman, fly to center,
- 1:23:11rounded it short.
- 1:23:13Here comes the pitch.
- 1:23:15A beautiful third ball between their first strikes.
- 1:23:18One...
- 1:23:20Melty's due to bat next.
- 1:23:28Drop of the seventh inning.
- 1:23:30Now they're going sharply down the third base line, but it's full power.
- 1:23:34Of course, the folks on the third base side and the left field side
- 1:23:38thought the two might fall and land it.
- 1:23:41Might have been a fair ball.
- 1:23:45Mike Hadroos.
- 1:23:49Holton's out of the mound, looks like he's getting a move on.
- 1:23:52Hubs are up.
- 1:23:54After win number 20
- 1:23:57of the spring season, to wind it up.
- 1:23:59Sox are looking for number 20 as of the moment.
- 1:24:02Four helping, White Sox, after seven.
- 1:24:06Ball one, strike two on the bat.
- 1:24:08Mike Hadroos.
- 1:24:10Takes the ball right inside.
- 1:24:13Even up to two and two.
- 1:24:16Two away.
- 1:24:18We have runners at second and third.
- 1:24:24Williams on second.
- 1:24:25D.E. Richard at third base.
- 1:24:29Brinkman running for ball in the score.
- 1:24:32Here's the miss on the outside corner.
- 1:24:34It's filled up at three and two.
- 1:24:393.15 is broadcast time for that double header from Oakland.
- 1:24:43Opening the 1971 season for the White Sox.
- 1:24:46They'll be at home on Friday.
- 1:24:49For the home opener against the Minnesota Twins.
- 1:24:52Ralph, there's a lot of division of opinion as to what happened to Harlan.
- 1:24:56It wasn't the throw, I think it's sliding back into the bag that he jammed his ankle or knee.
- 1:25:03Three, two, pitch.
- 1:25:16He's all about the left field line.
- 1:25:18We'll have to get behind the set.
- 1:25:20White Sox are out in front.
- 1:25:22Over the dump by a score of four to nothing.
- 1:25:26Oh, what a shame.
- 1:25:29Any pitcher for the Chicago White Sox?
- 1:25:32Number 23, Steve Steely.
- 1:25:35Oh, no.
- 1:25:38100 percent to me and three.
- 1:25:41Yeah.
- 1:25:44No, I'm trying it out.
- 1:25:47Can we have your attention please?
- 1:25:50It seems to happen every stretch.
- 1:25:52What should I say?
- 1:25:53There's a purple and white 9271 Cadillac convertible light.
- 1:25:56It's 2314.
- 1:25:58They're blocking a driveway.
- 1:26:00Mark, it's too close to a water hydrant.
- 1:26:02Your windshield wipers are on, your motor's running, your keys are in the ignition, and your doors are locked.
- 1:26:13Will the ladies and those with cars please move in?
- 1:26:19Look at him.
- 1:26:20What's that?
- 1:26:21Move that up that block and make that a black painting.
- 1:26:25I won't have that out of you.
- 1:26:32Ladies and gentlemen, please step to your places.
- 1:26:35All right, about the...
- 1:26:37I made it for my dad.
- 1:26:39The doors are locked and the key is in the ignition.
- 1:26:43Will the ladies and those with cars please move in?
- 1:26:47Ladies and gentlemen, please step to your places.
- 1:26:55The leadoff for the bottom of the seventh inning for the Cubs, Johnny Carlson.
- 1:27:19Back to the pitcher Tom Bradley.
- 1:27:26The batter is number 20, Oceania Orsi, center field.
- 1:27:33The number one given up by Steve Peely and fifth, Chicago Cubs, Ainsley.
- 1:27:49Leadoff double for Johnny Carlson, last half of the seventh inning, 4-0.
- 1:27:54The white sides looking to win number 20 to wind up the screen training season.
- 1:27:58As opposed to nine losses, fastball stretch.
- 1:28:04The team is 0-2-2, five to center, ground is a short.
- 1:28:12Peely, the third white side pitcher of the ballgame.
- 1:28:18Let's see who this catcher, Ed Herman, right-handed batting Jose Ortiz.
- 1:28:22Starts the swing on the pitch, holds up, it's low.
- 1:28:25Ball one, strike one. Catcher Kenny Rudolph, two off-mack.
- 1:28:30Last half of the seventh inning from Scottsdale, Arizona where the weather is absolutely perfect.
- 1:28:38Those mountains here look like they're three blocks away and they're probably 20 miles.
- 1:28:44Ground ball, to the short stop, Richard Wage picks it up, throws, holds that woman second base beautifully.
- 1:28:51Ortiz is off-needle watch.
- 1:28:54Number 15, Ken Rudolph.
- 1:28:57As Harry mentioned, the more we see keeping Richard at short.
- 1:29:00The more we like him, the luckier he is.
- 1:29:03We've been seeing that about all of our side players at the screen and that's exactly how we feel.
- 1:29:07An exciting ball call.
- 1:29:09Ken Rudolph.
- 1:29:14Declan Taylor, he's really following Rudolph.
- 1:29:18On scoring position on second base, it comes to pitch and the swing is far off the right side out of play.
- 1:29:25Rudolph doubled in the second.
- 1:29:29It's thrown out by Richard in the fifth inning.
- 1:29:34We're in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 1:29:36From Scottsdale Stadium, there's a jam-packed house of 4,158.
- 1:29:42The place holds 35, so you can imagine how many people are squeezed in today.
- 1:29:47They don't mind it at all.
- 1:29:50It's better to put these people out, either Chicagoans out here on a vacation
- 1:29:55or Chicagoans previously in our living here in this beautiful area.
- 1:30:00Good luck today.
- 1:30:02Here comes the pitch.
- 1:30:03Oh boy, what a play.
- 1:30:24Boy, oh boy, Ralph, what a play.
- 1:30:26Ed Herman made one of the greatest plays I've ever seen at Catcher Make.
- 1:30:30Walt Williams charging that base hit, took it on one bounce,
- 1:30:33and then fired all the way to home plate on the fly, and the throw was high.
- 1:30:37Ed Herman had a leap high into the air and caught the ball with one hand.
- 1:30:41Look at his glove.
- 1:30:42And all in the same motion on coming down, he flapped that glove on to the sliding spikes of Johnny Callison for the out.
- 1:30:51Boy, what a play.
- 1:30:52Another example of what we're going to see here at Sauk Park.
- 1:30:57When Williams came in on that ball, the bounce in front of him, he grabbed it,
- 1:31:02and his throw was just a little high to Herman, but from a distance, of course,
- 1:31:07it turned out to be a spectacular play.
- 1:31:10Herman went up into the air as a very steady.
- 1:31:12He held onto it, and as he came down, Callison had to slide on the infield side of home plate,
- 1:31:19and Herman came down and made the drive and went home plate.
- 1:31:23That's how he was out.
- 1:31:28All in one, they count.
- 1:31:32Rudolph on second base.
- 1:31:36Two hits here in the inning, and they're two away.
- 1:31:42It's not forever.
- 1:31:44Roland.
- 1:31:46Hey, Roland.
- 1:31:51Steve Keely on the bounce, the third start pitcher of the ballgame, Bradley Starry,
- 1:31:57wins five for the inning.
- 1:31:59He has now pitched 33 innings in the drive.
- 1:32:04And he's out.
- 1:32:07And he's out.
- 1:32:10And he's out.
- 1:32:12And he's out.
- 1:32:14And he's out.
- 1:32:16He pitched 33 innings in the drive.
- 1:32:24Oh my God, and we all can't believe that he played for the
- 1:32:32score.
- 1:32:34He's the fifth wish of the fourth set of games.
- 1:32:38a seven score in the game.
- 1:32:44That brings us over to the top of the batting
- 1:32:46where the fans catching you.
- 1:32:48Well the Cubs fans here in
- 1:32:50Johnson, Minnesota
- 1:32:52are waiting home for the Chicago Cubs
- 1:32:54they want to see the Cubs get that thing started
- 1:32:56to wind up their
- 1:32:57pin-playing season now
- 1:32:59with a victory.
- 1:33:00That's a particular moment the lifeguards have
- 1:33:02something to say about that. They lead 4-1
- 1:33:04first victory campaign year.
- 1:33:06Ralph I just saw Roland Heeman
- 1:33:08come over to talk to John Holland
- 1:33:10the general manager of the Cubs.
- 1:33:12Now the Cubs are going home right after the game
- 1:33:14in Chicago and I would imagine that maybe
- 1:33:16he was discussing with John the possibilities
- 1:33:18of Holland accompanying the Cubs
- 1:33:20and flying right into Chicago
- 1:33:22tonight to get medical attention there.
- 1:33:26Well we said it before we'll say it again
- 1:33:28let's pray that it's not
- 1:33:30anything serious.
- 1:33:32The Cubs are back.
- 1:33:34Kessinger the batter
- 1:33:36on her first base one run in
- 1:33:38last to the seventh.
- 1:33:40The Cubs are back the stock leads 4-1.
- 1:33:42Steve Peely
- 1:33:44on the mound the pick.
- 1:33:46So now the ball up here Williams
- 1:33:48goes to his left a couple of steps
- 1:33:50on Goodlock he's got it.
- 1:33:52The retire the stock.
- 1:33:54Well in the last half of the seventh
- 1:33:56inning for the Cubs one run
- 1:33:58the end of the seventh inning the Chicago White Sox
- 1:34:00get four, one, one.
- 1:34:30Look at this brother.
- 1:34:32That's the other side.
- 1:34:34Watch your down there.
- 1:34:40Boy that's a shame.
- 1:34:42Boy they really need him too.
- 1:34:44Okay what do you think?
- 1:34:50That's the big one.
- 1:34:52That's the big one.
- 1:34:54That's the big one.
- 1:34:56That's the big one.
- 1:34:58That's the big one.
- 1:35:08The next batter number 14 Bill Melton
- 1:35:10third base.
- 1:35:14We're going to the top of the eighth inning
- 1:35:16the White Sox are out in front 4-1.
- 1:35:18Bill Melton will lead it off he's had a double
- 1:35:20in the homer and bounced down two out of three.
- 1:35:22Had three hits yesterday.
- 1:35:24He's had himself quite a spring.
- 1:35:26Veteran left hander the Chicago Cubs
- 1:35:28a youthful veteran by the way here's the pitch.
- 1:35:30First pitch in there a good curveball
- 1:35:32a strike is called.
- 1:35:34One strike and no ball.
- 1:35:36Boy the first bad thing that's happened
- 1:35:38all spring long just occurred
- 1:35:40a few minutes ago.
- 1:35:42Here's the pitch curveball outside.
- 1:35:44Don what is it here?
- 1:35:46Harry Joe covered damage to his left knee
- 1:35:48and it may be a cartilage injury.
- 1:35:50We're taking him over to the hospital here
- 1:35:52for x-rays and
- 1:35:54if the x-rays show anything serious
- 1:35:56he's going to go back tonight
- 1:35:58on the plane to Chicago.
- 1:36:00So it looks like
- 1:36:02he won't be going with us to
- 1:36:04Oakland. The Cub doctor Dr.
- 1:36:06Zucker looked at him and is going over
- 1:36:08to the hospital with him and we're going to take
- 1:36:10x-rays there. The doctor feels he'll be negative
- 1:36:12but he wants to make sure.
- 1:36:14He's had a cartilage injury
- 1:36:16last year didn't he? Yes but that was in the
- 1:36:18other knee. This is in the left knee
- 1:36:20he had a knee operation last August
- 1:36:22on his right knee but this is the other knee
- 1:36:24and he twisted it when he slipped back into second base.
- 1:36:26I see. Thank you very much Don.
- 1:36:28Don, I'm giving you the report
- 1:36:30on the Joe Harlan thing. Meanwhile
- 1:36:32Bill Melton has had his third hit of the day
- 1:36:34single left. Carlos May
- 1:36:36miles off the first pitch.
- 1:36:38One strike and no balls.
- 1:36:40So Joe Harlan
- 1:36:42sliding back into the bag
- 1:36:44and the injury did not come from being hit by the
- 1:36:46throw. It came in sliding
- 1:36:48back into the bag.
- 1:36:50He twisted his left knee.
- 1:36:52Here's the pitch to Carlos May
- 1:36:54curveball low.
- 1:36:58He will not be with the White Sox as Don
- 1:37:00and Perth just told us in Oakland
- 1:37:02at all. And
- 1:37:04my surmise about Roland
- 1:37:06Heeman talking to John Harlan that's
- 1:37:08apparently what it was all about. Here's the pitch
- 1:37:10swung on high fly ball shorts on the field.
- 1:37:12Ortiz coming in. His cap
- 1:37:14falls off but he makes the cap.
- 1:37:16Carlos May flies
- 1:37:18to Ortiz. Joe Harlan
- 1:37:20was out. Watch your last
- 1:37:22back in the hall with
- 1:37:24a knee injury.
- 1:37:28He had to undergo surgery on his right knee
- 1:37:30on August the 4th for removal of torn
- 1:37:32cartilage. He made a remarkably
- 1:37:34speedy recovery and was back in action on
- 1:37:36September the 7th. Just about
- 1:37:38a month later. So
- 1:37:40we'll have to wait
- 1:37:42and see how badly his other knee has
- 1:37:44been hurt today. Here's Rykert the curveball
- 1:37:46low.
- 1:37:48One ball and no strikes. Rick has had a double
- 1:37:50one out of three. Ball game in the
- 1:37:52top of the eighth. Four to one and save with the Cubs
- 1:37:54and save with the Whiteside.
- 1:37:56Here's Holtzman with the Cubs
- 1:37:58firing. Swung to the fastball
- 1:38:00and he missed it. That evens it up to the ball
- 1:38:02on the stretch. The White Sox
- 1:38:06scored two in the second on a
- 1:38:08double by Melton, a triple by May and a double
- 1:38:10by Rykert. Got another
- 1:38:12one on the third on a home run by Melton.
- 1:38:14Picked up one on the fourth with two out on a
- 1:38:16single by Harlan. And then
- 1:38:18back to back singles by B.B.
- 1:38:20Richard and Walt Williams.
- 1:38:22Now Melton has opened again
- 1:38:24with a base hit. One out. Rick
- 1:38:26Rykert the batter. Two balls and a strike.
- 1:38:28Here's the stretch by Holtzman.
- 1:38:30The pitch on the way. Swung on.
- 1:38:32Drive into the right field corner but stays
- 1:38:34there. It'll be trouble. It is.
- 1:38:36Ball ball by about a foot and a half.
- 1:38:38Rykert going to the
- 1:38:40opposite field. Bows it
- 1:38:42off.
- 1:38:44That evens the count of two balls, two strikes.
- 1:38:46Four thousand one
- 1:38:48hundred and fifty-eight paid here today.
- 1:38:50They only seed around thirty-two
- 1:38:52hundred.
- 1:38:58Rick Rykert returning to
- 1:39:00the plate.
- 1:39:02All set to go now.
- 1:39:04Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:39:08Runner at first base one out.
- 1:39:10Four to one and save on the white side.
- 1:39:12Holtzman is ready.
- 1:39:14Now the pitch.
- 1:39:16Here it is. Curve ball.
- 1:39:18He's struck him out swinging.
- 1:39:20Holtzman really snapped
- 1:39:22one off.
- 1:39:24That's two away.
- 1:39:26Rich McKinney the right
- 1:39:28fielder comes out.
- 1:39:34Right hand batter waiting.
- 1:39:36Rich McKinney. He's nothing out of
- 1:39:38the game today.
- 1:39:40Flied out every time. The pitch.
- 1:39:42Curvin, a beauty, a strike call. Holtzman very
- 1:39:44sharp.
- 1:39:46Milt Pappas the last three of the runs. Holtzman the other one.
- 1:39:48Holtzman relieved in the fifth inning.
- 1:39:50So this is
- 1:39:52his fourth inning of work. The pitch.
- 1:39:54Bounces in front of the plate. A good
- 1:39:56stop by Rudolph.
- 1:40:00And the count evens up. A ball and a strike.
- 1:40:02Two men around. Eighth inning.
- 1:40:04Overflow crowd on hand.
- 1:40:08Now the pitch. Here it is.
- 1:40:10Swung on and popped up on the
- 1:40:12infield. Kessinger backing out
- 1:40:14under the grass shading his eyes.
- 1:40:16Makes the catch.
- 1:40:18To his father's side.
- 1:40:20One left. We move down to the
- 1:40:22bottom of the eighth. White Sox
- 1:40:24four. Cubs one.
- 1:40:30Boy that's a shame. Yeah.
- 1:40:32Very deep here too.
- 1:40:38There's the one
- 1:40:40we talked about.
- 1:41:02Boy I'm not too high on this
- 1:41:04keeling.
- 1:41:06I'm not too high on this keeling.
- 1:41:34What's false for identification. This is the
- 1:41:36Chicago White Sox baseball network.
- 1:41:50Harry Carrey back at Scottsdale
- 1:41:52Stadium as we go into the bottom half of the eighth inning.
- 1:41:54Steve Keighley came on
- 1:41:56when Joe Haaland was hurt. And was
- 1:41:58really hit hard at the summer inning.
- 1:42:00And it
- 1:42:02took a sensational play by catcher
- 1:42:04Ed Herman. Cutting a runner off at the plate.
- 1:42:06To keep the cubs from
- 1:42:08really having a good inning.
- 1:42:10As it is the score now
- 1:42:12four to one and save it to the White Sox.
- 1:42:14Here's Glenn Beckard who's one out of three so far.
- 1:42:16Right handed hitter.
- 1:42:18Steve Keighley who used to be with the Angels.
- 1:42:20These spectacle right handed
- 1:42:22delivers. Curveball under a beauty of
- 1:42:24strike call. One strike to no ball.
- 1:42:26Nobody on nobody out.
- 1:42:28Joe Haaland was injured
- 1:42:30sliding back in a second base.
- 1:42:32Being taken to a hospital
- 1:42:34for x-ray.
- 1:42:36Out of line to delivery. Here it is.
- 1:42:38Half ball a little bit low.
- 1:42:40Funny thing Haaland got up.
- 1:42:42And then his knee must have collapsed.
- 1:42:46Caved in under him
- 1:42:48and he fell to the ground.
- 1:42:50Out of signal given. One ball
- 1:42:52one strike. The pitch.
- 1:42:54Beckard swings and there's a fly ball.
- 1:42:56Short right field. Should be caught. McKinney
- 1:42:58coming in. Down with the sunglasses.
- 1:43:00Makes the catch.
- 1:43:02Beckard flies to McKinney.
- 1:43:04One out here is Billy Williams.
- 1:43:06Walked in the first and he landed
- 1:43:08in the third. Rolled out to
- 1:43:10second and second.
- 1:43:12One out. Nobody on. Ball game in the eighth.
- 1:43:16Billy Williams taking in.
- 1:43:18Steve Keighley.
- 1:43:20Here's Roland
- 1:43:22Heeman who should be given
- 1:43:24should be able to give us an up to date report on
- 1:43:26Haaland. Joe jammed his knee
- 1:43:28sliding back into second base.
- 1:43:30Had some soreness inside
- 1:43:32the knee. Had difficulty
- 1:43:34maneuvering the knee as well as he would like
- 1:43:36naturally. Dr. Suker
- 1:43:38the Cubs position.
- 1:43:40Fortunately he was here in the ball park.
- 1:43:42Gave Joe some attention
- 1:43:44and recommended that we fly him back
- 1:43:46to Chicago. So through the
- 1:43:48courtesy of John Haaland and Chicago Cubs
- 1:43:50Haaland will fly back to Chicago
- 1:43:52this afternoon on their flight.
- 1:43:54And then our Cubs position
- 1:43:56Dr. Jerome Loftus will examine
- 1:43:58him and hospitalized him immediately.
- 1:44:00What is it first
- 1:44:02for my eyes about the injury? Is it anything
- 1:44:04you know
- 1:44:06very serious? We hope it isn't
- 1:44:08it's difficult to see immediately.
- 1:44:12It's like a home run foul ball off the bat
- 1:44:14of Billy Williams so don't get excited.
- 1:44:18Dr. Suker simply
- 1:44:20mentioned that he felt that tomorrow
- 1:44:22naturally it would be great soreness and it was
- 1:44:24severe enough that he felt that he should
- 1:44:26get the immediate attention and
- 1:44:28recommended he fly back to Chicago.
- 1:44:30So we hope that
- 1:44:32it's not as serious as we might
- 1:44:34have feared initially. It is
- 1:44:36not the knee that Joe
- 1:44:38underwent our surgery for last year
- 1:44:40so this may be a plus in that
- 1:44:42regard because it's the knee which
- 1:44:44he had suffered the operation last year
- 1:44:46has been re-injured and I think we have more fear.
- 1:44:48Roland thanks so much for coming up.
- 1:44:50Roland Heeman
- 1:44:52Director of Player Personnel for the White Sox
- 1:44:54giving us the up to minute report on
- 1:44:56the conditions Joe Horlick. Here's Billy Williams
- 1:44:58up there now swings and he fouls the pitch back.
- 1:45:00Funny thing I just
- 1:45:02guessed at things when I saw Roland go over
- 1:45:04to talk to John Holland I just
- 1:45:06guessed that that might be what he was talking
- 1:45:08to him about and of course as we had
- 1:45:10mentioned the Cubs fly home right after the game
- 1:45:12so this will be advantageous.
- 1:45:14Joe will be back home in Chicago to get
- 1:45:16proper care. Here's the wind
- 1:45:18up and he's going to span the pitch.
- 1:45:20Billy Williams fouls it back to the screen.
- 1:45:22Well this spring training
- 1:45:24was just absolutely too perfect not
- 1:45:26to have something happen.
- 1:45:28Everything has gone too smoothly and
- 1:45:30we're sorry to say that it had to be stopped
- 1:45:32that's picking a situation with an
- 1:45:34accident like this.
- 1:45:36Billy Williams waiting two strikes
- 1:45:38and a ball. Steve Keely into the wind up.
- 1:45:40Here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:45:42Flat ball. He aimed for that outside corner and missed
- 1:45:44with it and the count is evened up.
- 1:45:46Two balls two strikes one out.
- 1:45:48Bottom of the eighth. The White Sox hoping
- 1:45:50to win the city championship in
- 1:45:52this rubber game. They won the first game
- 1:45:54nine to two lost yesterday nine to four
- 1:45:56and are leading all the way today.
- 1:45:58The score being four to one at the moment.
- 1:46:00Two balls two strikes.
- 1:46:02Billy Williams digging in. Here's the
- 1:46:04pitch by Keely.
- 1:46:06Smash foul out down the right field corner.
- 1:46:08Boy this Williams
- 1:46:10even his foul ball
- 1:46:12for his part.
- 1:46:14He just pops that ball.
- 1:46:16Two balls two strikes.
- 1:46:18Billy Williams digging in.
- 1:46:20Down the side.
- 1:46:22Keely getting ready.
- 1:46:24Here's the pitch.
- 1:46:26Ball three is
- 1:46:28ball four rather high.
- 1:46:30So Billy Williams draws the
- 1:46:32base on ball.
- 1:46:34Santos had a great spring.
- 1:46:36Santos had a great spring.
- 1:46:42That's only the second walk
- 1:46:44this young man is giving up all strength.
- 1:46:46He has good control.
- 1:46:48He's around the plate all the time.
- 1:46:50Back the entire White Sox pitching
- 1:46:52staff has been able to
- 1:46:54avoid that old
- 1:46:56play based on ball.
- 1:46:58Two center one out one
- 1:47:00on. The stretch
- 1:47:02from the belt to the pitch. Here it is.
- 1:47:04It's a little bit inside.
- 1:47:06Kenny Holtzman the pitcher will be up there next.
- 1:47:10They start a
- 1:47:12right hander warming up on the both end. The left
- 1:47:14hander starts to limber up.
- 1:47:16He's going to warm up too.
- 1:47:18One on one out.
- 1:47:20Right hander waiting.
- 1:47:22Here's
- 1:47:24Keely getting set.
- 1:47:26The pitch on the way to Santos.
- 1:47:28Curve ball is high.
- 1:47:30Keely is struggling out there.
- 1:47:32A runner at first base
- 1:47:34went away.
- 1:47:36Bottom of the eighth.
- 1:47:38The Cubs trying to come from behind.
- 1:47:42Now the signal to give it.
- 1:47:44Hal Breden
- 1:47:46is going to be a pinch hitter.
- 1:47:48Now the stretch.
- 1:47:50Here's the
- 1:47:52pitch on the way.
- 1:47:54Swung over and popped up.
- 1:47:56In foul territory who's going to get it? Bill Melton
- 1:47:58calling for the ball. Make
- 1:48:00a juggle before it hits the ground.
- 1:48:02Bill Melton
- 1:48:04fumbled that ball but he was catching
- 1:48:06it up by his head.
- 1:48:08And when it popped out of his glove
- 1:48:10he had time to grab it again.
- 1:48:12So Santos
- 1:48:14fouls to Melton.
- 1:48:16Two out in here
- 1:48:18is Hal Breden who hit a free run
- 1:48:20homer yesterday. He's batting
- 1:48:22for Holtzman. Breden had
- 1:48:2437 home runs in Richmond last year.
- 1:48:26And apparently
- 1:48:28he has made the club
- 1:48:30a pinch hitter.
- 1:48:32Hal Breden
- 1:48:38Breden getting ready.
- 1:48:42Healy trying to pitch out of trouble.
- 1:48:44Breden
- 1:48:4627 years old
- 1:48:48from Albany, Georgia. Here's the pitch.
- 1:48:50There's a line, spare, spare
- 1:48:52into the corner. That's the base.
- 1:48:54He's got a chance to score a run.
- 1:48:56Today a fan touches the ball.
- 1:48:58Hey, they're going to have to stop them to win for the score.
- 1:49:00But let's see what they're going to give them.
- 1:49:02A fan reached over the railing
- 1:49:04to touch the ball.
- 1:49:08Hillie Williams is allowed to score.
- 1:49:10Chuck Tanner comes out
- 1:49:12to talk to the umpire.
- 1:49:14In the judgment of the umpire
- 1:49:16Walker
- 1:49:18Hillie Williams with a score for first base.
- 1:49:20And so Chuck Tanner
- 1:49:22is arguing with the
- 1:49:24plate umpire that if it's a
- 1:49:26ground rule double, Hillie Williams
- 1:49:28should be stopped at third base.
- 1:49:30Larry Barnett is the plate umpire
- 1:49:32and he is saying, I think, that in his opinion
- 1:49:34Williams would have scored
- 1:49:36and that he shouldn't be deprived of the run.
- 1:49:38And Chuck Tanner is bringing up
- 1:49:40a point of order. If it is a
- 1:49:42ground rule double because of
- 1:49:44the fan touching the ball, why
- 1:49:46shouldn't Williams be forced
- 1:49:48to stop at third base?
- 1:49:50So Breden again comes in with a
- 1:49:52very significant
- 1:49:54pitch hit. And now the Cubs
- 1:49:56trail only by one. It's 4-2.
- 1:49:58Keely is not at all
- 1:50:00sharp.
- 1:50:02Here's a stretch.
- 1:50:04The pitch to Callison.
- 1:50:06Here it is. Swung on a high
- 1:50:08fly ball. Right field.
- 1:50:10McKinney coming in.
- 1:50:12And if our territory
- 1:50:14nobody can reach the ball.
- 1:50:18And Mr.
- 1:50:20Keely can feel very lucky
- 1:50:24that that ball wasn't hit out of the ball park.
- 1:50:26He threw Callison
- 1:50:28a hanging lollipop curveball.
- 1:50:30Callison just
- 1:50:32happened to pop the ball up in foul
- 1:50:34territory. It might have been
- 1:50:36caught by either Andrews or McKinney
- 1:50:38but neither one did reach the ball.
- 1:50:42Wilbur Wood
- 1:50:44starting to
- 1:50:46warm up.
- 1:50:48Keely was lucky to get out of the seventh
- 1:50:50with only one run.
- 1:50:52And he's already
- 1:50:54permitted one in the eighth.
- 1:50:56And he doesn't seem to have
- 1:50:58too much out there at the moment.
- 1:51:00He needs this out badly here.
- 1:51:02Johnny Callison who's had two out of three
- 1:51:04so far. Here's the pitch.
- 1:51:06Wings and he misses a fast ball.
- 1:51:08He's in the hole two strikes and
- 1:51:10nothing.
- 1:51:12Callison, the only time he was retired
- 1:51:14was on a line drive right back
- 1:51:16to the pitcher.
- 1:51:20Four to two in favor
- 1:51:22of the white side.
- 1:51:26Now the signal.
- 1:51:30Keely getting ready.
- 1:51:32Here's the pitch.
- 1:51:36Fastball outside.
- 1:51:38Two strikes on the ball. Keely is primarily
- 1:51:40a fastball pitcher.
- 1:51:42Let's see who's that warming up
- 1:51:44down there.
- 1:51:48Left-hander for the Cubs.
- 1:51:50Wilbur Wood I guess.
- 1:51:52Two strikes on the ball.
- 1:51:56There's B.B. Richard cutting behind the runner to pitch.
- 1:51:58High curveball inside.
- 1:52:00The count evens.
- 1:52:02Johnny Callison
- 1:52:04is the play.
- 1:52:06Runner at second base. Two men are out.
- 1:52:08Whedon pinch hit a
- 1:52:10three run homer yesterday.
- 1:52:12And today he's doubled
- 1:52:14in a run.
- 1:52:16Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:52:18Here's the pitch.
- 1:52:20There's a smash. Carlos
- 1:52:22May a beautiful stop races to the back
- 1:52:24and wins to retire the
- 1:52:26side. Holy cow what
- 1:52:28a play.
- 1:52:30Johnny Callison really hit
- 1:52:32a bullet down the first base
- 1:52:34line. Carlos May was
- 1:52:36playing him to full. He
- 1:52:38took a dive for the ball at the foul
- 1:52:40line, came up with it. Then he was
- 1:52:42lying on all four. He had a scramble
- 1:52:44into position. The ball was hit so hard
- 1:52:46that the pitcher clearly never had a chance
- 1:52:48to cover. So Carlos May
- 1:52:50had nobody to throw the ball to.
- 1:52:52He had to engage in a foot race
- 1:52:54with Johnny Callison
- 1:52:56and he won it by a strike.
- 1:52:58Beautiful play by May.
- 1:53:00So the total's only any one run.
- 1:53:02One hit, no air.
- 1:53:04One left. And at the end of eight
- 1:53:06very interesting innings to score.
- 1:53:08The Chicago White Sox four.
- 1:53:10The Chicago Cubs two.
- 1:53:16Hey Charlie, just gave your place a plug.
- 1:53:18Hey.
- 1:53:20Now 15 for the
- 1:53:21number 48 Jim
- 1:53:23Colemore.
- 1:53:25You're going to have to wait there.
- 1:53:27You should have been.
- 1:53:29I've seen. Somebody said you were in there.
- 1:53:31I went over there.
- 1:53:33You're sharing the way. I thought that was
- 1:53:35the way. Are you guys open tonight?
- 1:53:37Yeah. Go.
- 1:53:39We'll see you tonight.
- 1:53:41Oh,
- 1:53:50yeah.
- 1:54:00Big ball.
- 1:54:02There's Dave on the.
- 1:54:04The table.
- 1:54:06Dave.
- 1:54:08Oh,
- 1:54:10thanks Charlie.
- 1:54:19Well, the amenities of the season.
- 1:54:21Chuck Tanner comes over, talks with Leo
- 1:54:23DeRosier, they chat for a little bit.
- 1:54:25Then pat each other in the back.
- 1:54:27Shake hands. You can almost
- 1:54:29mind read what they're saying.
- 1:54:31Have a good year.
- 1:54:33I know the
- 1:54:35White Sox to a man.
- 1:54:37Hope that the Cubs will win the
- 1:54:39National League pennant.
- 1:54:41And I'm sure that the Cubs
- 1:54:43wish the White Sox nothing
- 1:54:45but the very best.
- 1:54:49It is a utopian thought.
- 1:54:53But nevertheless,
- 1:54:55maybe not an impossible
- 1:54:57dream.
- 1:54:59That perhaps someday these two clubs will
- 1:55:01engage in an all Chicago
- 1:55:03World Series. There is
- 1:55:05first man up there.
- 1:55:07Ed Herman, first pitch he drills in the
- 1:55:09right center field for a base hit.
- 1:55:11Herman gets his first hit of the day
- 1:55:13as he lines a single in the
- 1:55:15right center. We have a new pitcher in there
- 1:55:17for the Chicago Cubs.
- 1:55:19Kim Colburn.
- 1:55:21Colburn, a
- 1:55:23right hander.
- 1:55:25At his very first pitch, Ed Herman
- 1:55:27wrapped in the right center for a base hit.
- 1:55:31Here's Keely now.
- 1:55:33Turner at first, nobody up.
- 1:55:35Holtzman, pitch four innings.
- 1:55:43He allowed only one run.
- 1:55:47Permitted four hits.
- 1:55:49Kim Colburn, a right hander
- 1:55:51from Santa Paula, California.
- 1:55:5324 years old, he throws over the first base
- 1:55:55to Pepitone.
- 1:55:57But Herman is on the back.
- 1:55:59Colburn last year for the Cubs, one three
- 1:56:01and one miss one.
- 1:56:05Here's the pitch.
- 1:56:07Run and foul back and out of play.
- 1:56:09It was a fan, a souvenir for somebody.
- 1:56:11Colburn, graduated from
- 1:56:13Whittier California College and is now
- 1:56:15working on his master's degree in sociology
- 1:56:17at the University of Washington.
- 1:56:21So he's a brain.
- 1:56:25Leo DeRosier will trade all that gray matter
- 1:56:27for a good pitching arm.
- 1:56:31So here's Keely trying to advance the runner.
- 1:56:33Four to two in favor of the white side.
- 1:56:35Throw to first, runner back.
- 1:56:39Rick Talley of the Chicago Today
- 1:56:41will be the post game
- 1:56:43guest with Ralph.
- 1:56:47Immediately following, so I hope you'll stay tuned.
- 1:56:49Here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:56:51Spike is called.
- 1:56:53Two strikes and nothing.
- 1:56:55Keely is in the hole.
- 1:56:57Trying to advance Ed Herman.
- 1:56:59B.B. Richard will be up there next.
- 1:57:01Richard has played a sparkling game
- 1:57:03at shortstop.
- 1:57:05He's had one out of three at the plate.
- 1:57:07Contributed a stolen base.
- 1:57:11Not much more than anybody
- 1:57:13can do with this youngster.
- 1:57:15And likewise, Louis Alvarado
- 1:57:17is rival for the position.
- 1:57:19Pitch to Keely.
- 1:57:21He bonds beautifully.
- 1:57:23The only A, the only play, first base.
- 1:57:25And inbound.
- 1:57:27Becker took the throw from Ken Rudolph.
- 1:57:31It's a perfect sacrifice by Steve Keely.
- 1:57:35And with one out, here's B.B. Richard.
- 1:57:41Richard, one out of three today.
- 1:57:43The batter to an eye.
- 1:57:45So Richard and World Williams
- 1:57:47will have a shot at driving in another run.
- 1:57:49White Sox out in front.
- 1:57:51Four to two were in the top of the ninth.
- 1:57:53The Chicago Bulls evened up
- 1:57:55the basketball playoffs.
- 1:57:57And now it'll all be decided Thursday night
- 1:57:59in Los Angeles.
- 1:58:01Here's the pitch.
- 1:58:03Swung and far back and out of play.
- 1:58:05The Lakers will have the home
- 1:58:07court advantage.
- 1:58:09The playoffs tie
- 1:58:11three games to three.
- 1:58:13And will be decided at the forum.
- 1:58:15Jack Kent Cook's Palace.
- 1:58:17Next Thursday night.
- 1:58:19Here's the stretch.
- 1:58:21The pitch.
- 1:58:23Well, we'll be home.
- 1:58:25It's an off date next Thursday night in Chicago.
- 1:58:27Sit at the Ambassador East Hotel.
- 1:58:31And watch the game.
- 1:58:33And pull for the Bulls to
- 1:58:35upset the Lakers.
- 1:58:39Now the stretch.
- 1:58:41Here's the pitch.
- 1:58:43Into the dirt.
- 1:58:45Pounces on the ball.
- 1:58:49Lovely afternoon and overflow crowd
- 1:58:51of 4158.
- 1:58:53As these two teams end
- 1:58:55spring training.
- 1:58:59The White Sox are shooting for
- 1:59:01their 20th victory of the spring
- 1:59:03campaign. They've lost only nine times.
- 1:59:05But they suffered a very
- 1:59:07telling injury today
- 1:59:09when Joe Horland was hurt.
- 1:59:11Two balls and a strike.
- 1:59:15The glance at second base.
- 1:59:17The pitch to Richard.
- 1:59:19Ground ball to the shortstop.
- 1:59:21Herman trying for third.
- 1:59:23Kessinger's play. Very close but he's out.
- 1:59:25So Kessinger
- 1:59:27throws out B.B. Richard.
- 1:59:29Ed Herman.
- 1:59:31Maybe Kessinger might
- 1:59:33take a shot at him.
- 1:59:35But he took the sure play.
- 1:59:37Two out. Here's Walt Williams who drove in
- 1:59:39the run on the seventh.
- 1:59:41Walt Williams has won
- 1:59:43the regular job in the outfield
- 1:59:45at least to start the season.
- 1:59:49When Chuck Tanner took over during the winter
- 1:59:53Walt Williams didn't even figure in Chuck's
- 1:59:55opinion
- 1:59:57on even making the team.
- 2:00:01But there was insight to Tanner that
- 2:00:03he feels this guy through his
- 2:00:05performance this spring must be rewarded.
- 2:00:09And therefore he has given him the
- 2:00:11starting job.
- 2:00:13Here's the pitch to Walt.
- 2:00:15Swung on a high fly ball right field.
- 2:00:17Here's Callison coming in under the ball.
- 2:00:19He's got room. Makes the catch to
- 2:00:21retire to south.
- 2:00:23Don't go runs. One hit to the air. One left.
- 2:00:25We go into the bottom of the ninth
- 2:00:27with a score. White Sox
- 2:00:29four comes to.
- 2:00:37Ladies and gentlemen this time the
- 2:00:39Scottsdale Charo's would like to
- 2:00:41thank you very much for
- 2:00:43majorizing our ballgames this spring.
- 2:00:45Making it another successful spring.
- 2:00:47The second year in a row the
- 2:00:49Scottsdale is led the Cactus League
- 2:00:51in attendance. Thank you very much.
- 2:00:53We'd also
- 2:00:55like for you to join us. We're
- 2:00:57sure you do. We're wishing the Chicago
- 2:00:59Cubs the best of luck
- 2:01:01when they leave here today and go in
- 2:01:03search of the National League.
- 2:01:05Thank you.
- 2:01:35We're going to the bottom of the ninth
- 2:01:37inning and Jose Ortiz
- 2:01:39will lead it off against Steve Keely.
- 2:01:41The White Sox holding a four to two
- 2:01:43lead in this rubber game of the three
- 2:01:45game series.
- 2:01:47For the Mythical
- 2:01:49Baseball Championship of the city of
- 2:01:51Chicago.
- 2:01:53The first batter at the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:01:55Ortiz is nothing out of three today.
- 2:01:57Jose Ortiz center field.
- 2:01:59It's the first time in the last four
- 2:02:01days that he's been in the
- 2:02:03first time in the last four days
- 2:02:05that he hasn't
- 2:02:09had three hits.
- 2:02:11It will be Ortiz
- 2:02:13Rudolph and Pepa Tone in this
- 2:02:15inning.
- 2:02:17Nobody on nobody out.
- 2:02:19Ortiz leading it off.
- 2:02:21Steve Keely gets set. Here's the
- 2:02:23pitch on the way and it's high.
- 2:02:25One ball no strike.
- 2:02:27Two left handers are
- 2:02:29in the bullpen.
- 2:02:31For the White Sox. Wilbur Wood is one
- 2:02:33of them. Looks like Forster is the
- 2:02:35other one.
- 2:02:37One ball no strike.
- 2:02:39Ortiz
- 2:02:41digging in waves that bat around. Here's the
- 2:02:43pitch.
- 2:02:45Right down the middle of a good fastball a strike off.
- 2:02:47That evens it up with a ball and a
- 2:02:49strike.
- 2:02:51Nobody on nobody out. White Sox
- 2:02:53leading four to two bottom of the ninth.
- 2:02:55The Chicago Cubs lead
- 2:02:57after the game to go home to Chicago.
- 2:02:59Where they open up against the Cardinals
- 2:03:01Tuesday afternoon.
- 2:03:03Here's the pitch. One on bouncing ball
- 2:03:05melting to his right in foul territory.
- 2:03:07It isn't fair to throw. He would have been out
- 2:03:09but it's a foul ball.
- 2:03:11So Ortiz
- 2:03:13will return to the back.
- 2:03:15The White Sox stay right here in
- 2:03:17Scottsdale for a couple more days of practice
- 2:03:19because they don't open the season
- 2:03:21until Wednesday afternoon and then with a
- 2:03:23double header in Oakland.
- 2:03:25Our broadcast time over all these
- 2:03:27stations will be 3 15
- 2:03:29Chicago time
- 2:03:31Wednesday afternoon.
- 2:03:33I sincerely hope you'll be with us.
- 2:03:37And then the home opener
- 2:03:39Friday afternoon April the ninth
- 2:03:41at White Sox Park against
- 2:03:43the division champion
- 2:03:45Minnesota twin. Harmon Killibrew
- 2:03:47Tony Oliva and company.
- 2:03:49Here's the pitch. Swung on
- 2:03:51fly ball left center field. It may drop
- 2:03:53may drop may drop may drop may drop.
- 2:03:55It does.
- 2:03:57Walt Williams made a long
- 2:03:59run for that ball but couldn't get to
- 2:04:01it. So the Cubs are alive
- 2:04:03in the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:04:05And here is Rudolph.
- 2:04:07The next batter number 15
- 2:04:09Ken Rudolph. That was a
- 2:04:11blue pin.
- 2:04:13Walt Williams gave it quite a try.
- 2:04:15Made a one handed pick up of the ball.
- 2:04:19And now here is
- 2:04:21Rudolph.
- 2:04:25Right handed hitter.
- 2:04:29Big guy. Here's Keely getting
- 2:04:31ready. And the
- 2:04:33pitch. Here it is.
- 2:04:35Everything he's throwing is high. High
- 2:04:37curve ball. One ball no strike.
- 2:04:39He wants to get the ball
- 2:04:41down.
- 2:04:43He'd like to get Rudolph to hit it with
- 2:04:45double play. Rudolph is not fast.
- 2:04:47Not a stretch.
- 2:04:49Here's the pitch on the way.
- 2:04:51High curve
- 2:04:53again. Can't get the ball down.
- 2:04:55And he's in a hole. And the
- 2:04:57activity in the bullpen
- 2:04:59becomes more energetic.
- 2:05:01Now the
- 2:05:03signal given.
- 2:05:05Two balls no strike.
- 2:05:07Rudolph waits.
- 2:05:09Steve Keely delivers.
- 2:05:11Here it is. Right down
- 2:05:13the middle of good fastball.
- 2:05:15And Rudolph was taking two balls
- 2:05:17and a strike. Four to two
- 2:05:19in favor of the white side.
- 2:05:21Where in the ninth?
- 2:05:23The Cubs trying to pull it out of the
- 2:05:25fire.
- 2:05:27Now Keely gets ready.
- 2:05:29And the pitch. Here it is.
- 2:05:31He swings and misses.
- 2:05:33And the count evens up.
- 2:05:35Two balls. Two strikes.
- 2:05:37Rudolph had a good pitch to hit.
- 2:05:39A letter high fastball.
- 2:05:41And he swung right through it.
- 2:05:43Peanuts Lowry coaching a third base
- 2:05:45for the Cubs.
- 2:05:47Joey Amalfatano at first base.
- 2:05:49Bright sunshine. A red hot
- 2:05:51sun. Temperature in the mid
- 2:05:53eighties.
- 2:05:55Now the stretch. Here's the pitch.
- 2:05:57Ground ball by B Double Play.
- 2:05:59Melnard. Hey! Right throw there.
- 2:06:01Here's the runner racing at third.
- 2:06:03And there goes Rudolph
- 2:06:05for second.
- 2:06:07And he runs it all with nobody else.
- 2:06:17That ball was hit
- 2:06:19medium speed. It just never
- 2:06:21came up for Melton.
- 2:06:23Who was trying to rush
- 2:06:25the play to get the double play.
- 2:06:27Knowing that Rudolph is very slow.
- 2:06:29That's going to be off for
- 2:06:31Keely.
- 2:06:33And Wilbur Wood I believe is going to be
- 2:06:35brought in here to pitch to Joe Pepitone.
- 2:06:37And the Cubs now have a great
- 2:06:39chance
- 2:06:41to pull this one out of the fire.
- 2:06:43The tying runs are at second and third
- 2:06:45with nobody out.
- 2:06:47A bloop single
- 2:06:49off the bat of our T's.
- 2:06:51And a slow dribbler off
- 2:06:53the bat of Rudolph which went through
- 2:06:55Melton.
- 2:06:57Runners at second and third. Nobody out.
- 2:06:59And Wilbur
- 2:07:01Wood
- 2:07:03comes into relief.
- 2:07:05Nobody out.
- 2:07:07Down to middle fifth for the
- 2:07:09White Sox. Number
- 2:07:1128 Wilbur Wood.
- 2:07:13Keely this was not one of his good outing.
- 2:07:15He pitched two innings.
- 2:07:17He was in trouble on every inning.
- 2:07:19Everything he threw was up high.
- 2:07:23He allowed five hits while he was
- 2:07:25in there.
- 2:07:27He allowed the first two runs
- 2:07:29they made.
- 2:07:31He had a shutout going when he came
- 2:07:33into the contest.
- 2:07:35But the Cubs
- 2:07:37took a very very fun
- 2:07:39liking to his pitching.
- 2:07:41So he permitted
- 2:07:43five hits.
- 2:07:45The responsibility for these two runs belongs
- 2:07:47to him. There is no way he
- 2:07:49could be the losing pitcher.
- 2:07:51Because the very worst that he could
- 2:07:53be charged with would be four runs
- 2:07:55which is the total the White Sox
- 2:07:57had. So
- 2:07:59Cuppetone will be the batter against the Knuckleball
- 2:08:01or Wilbur Wood.
- 2:08:03Now here is a game situation.
- 2:08:05Cuppetone
- 2:08:07singled in a run on the center.
- 2:08:09The batter is number eight Joe Pemezon.
- 2:08:11The infield is playing back.
- 2:08:13The outfield is deep.
- 2:08:15As Pempeton steps under the batter's box.
- 2:08:17Four to two in favor of the
- 2:08:19White Sox.
- 2:08:21But the Cubs have a great
- 2:08:23chance here to turn it around.
- 2:08:25The pitch. Swung and a little pop
- 2:08:27on the infield. Wilbur Wood
- 2:08:29calls for the ball and hey almost dropped
- 2:08:31and made the catch.
- 2:08:33Pempeton on the first pitch popped to Wilbur Wood.
- 2:08:35And it wasn't hit high enough for one
- 2:08:37of the other infielders to call for.
- 2:08:39Number eight on the left. Don Dessinger
- 2:08:41shortstop.
- 2:08:43Don with Don Umford.
- 2:08:45Harry I was just over the hospital with Joe Horlan
- 2:08:47and the x-rayed his left knee.
- 2:08:49The x-ray showed that nothing was broken.
- 2:08:51We'll have to wait and see how the swelling goes down
- 2:08:53and find out whether the cartilage is torn
- 2:08:55in his knee or not and we won't know that for a few days.
- 2:08:57He's going back on the plane with the court.
- 2:08:59Glenn Becker who grabbed it bare handed and
- 2:09:01flipped it right back.
- 2:09:03Pempeton on the
- 2:09:05first pitch has popped out.
- 2:09:07Can Wilbur Wood get out of this jam?
- 2:09:09Becker will be next. Kessinger
- 2:09:11hitting right handed now.
- 2:09:13Here's a stretch by Wilbur Wood. The pitch.
- 2:09:15Knock a ball into
- 2:09:17the dirt. A nice play in there by
- 2:09:19Ed Herman. Herman behind
- 2:09:21the play. Boy he made
- 2:09:23some play in the seventh inning.
- 2:09:25Got a
- 2:09:27throw from the outfield.
- 2:09:29One ball, one strike.
- 2:09:31Kessinger waiting. The delivery by
- 2:09:33Wilbur Wood. Swings and he fouls it
- 2:09:35back. Two strikes and a ball.
- 2:09:37Kessinger was trying to poke that
- 2:09:39knuckleball into right field.
- 2:09:41Wilbur Wood.
- 2:09:43He wants that strike out here.
- 2:09:45Boy what an inspirational
- 2:09:47job it would be if he could pitch his
- 2:09:49way out of this jam. It'd be a
- 2:09:51great way to end spring training.
- 2:09:53With your ace relief pitcher
- 2:09:55doing what he gets paid for.
- 2:09:57Putting out fires.
- 2:09:59But he's got two tough cookies to get.
- 2:10:01Kessinger is up there now.
- 2:10:03Glenn Beckard will be next.
- 2:10:05Two strikes and a ball.
- 2:10:07Here's the
- 2:10:09pitch on the way.
- 2:10:11There's a smash. Left field. The game's
- 2:10:13gonna be tied. One run is in.
- 2:10:15Here's another one to throw to the plate.
- 2:10:17It is too late. And on the
- 2:10:19throw the lead run goes to second.
- 2:10:25Kessinger.
- 2:10:27Line to singles.
- 2:10:29Beyond Melton and B.B.
- 2:10:31Richards.
- 2:10:33Walt Williams made an ill advised throw
- 2:10:35to the plate. But I think he was
- 2:10:37throwing hoping it would be cut off.
- 2:10:39It came all the way into the plate.
- 2:10:41It was closer than you would think.
- 2:10:43Now here's Beckard.
- 2:10:45And the Cubs are within a base head
- 2:10:47leading the City Series.
- 2:10:49It's all tied up.
- 2:10:51Four and four.
- 2:10:55One out. Billy Williams will be next.
- 2:10:59Kessinger delivering a timely hit.
- 2:11:01The throw in the two tying run.
- 2:11:03Here's the stretch now.
- 2:11:05The pitch.
- 2:11:07Swings and a knuckleball and he misses.
- 2:11:09One strike no ball.
- 2:11:11The pitch to Kessinger was a knuckleball
- 2:11:13to lay flat and high.
- 2:11:15And Kessinger drilled it
- 2:11:17between Richards and Melton.
- 2:11:21There's a pitch on the way.
- 2:11:23There's a little top fly.
- 2:11:25Sharp center.
- 2:11:27And facing up. The runner on third holding up.
- 2:11:29The throw comes to the plate.
- 2:11:31Kessinger fearing
- 2:11:33the ball might be caught held up.
- 2:11:35And it's runners at first
- 2:11:37and third and here's Billy Williams.
- 2:11:39Now coming to bat.
- 2:11:41Number 26.
- 2:11:43Billy Williams.
- 2:11:45Billy Williams could be the hero here.
- 2:11:47Let's see what they can do.
- 2:11:49They got Sano coming up next.
- 2:11:55Runners at first and third.
- 2:12:01Wilbur Wood got Pepitone
- 2:12:03to pop up.
- 2:12:05And got out in front of Kessinger. Two strikes and a ball.
- 2:12:07But then Kessinger
- 2:12:09tied it up with a base hit to left.
- 2:12:11Now Becker just blew one
- 2:12:13into Sharp's center. The infield has
- 2:12:15to come in for the play at the plate.
- 2:12:17They're bringing the outfield in too.
- 2:12:19Because the long fly ends the game
- 2:12:21anyhow.
- 2:12:23So they bring everybody in.
- 2:12:25Bring them all in.
- 2:12:27Have to be close enough to have a chance on a fly ball
- 2:12:29to throw a man out at the plate.
- 2:12:33The White Sox led this
- 2:12:35one all the way.
- 2:12:37And
- 2:12:39here's the strike.
- 2:12:41Infield in. The pitch on the way.
- 2:12:43Little bit low. Ball on.
- 2:12:45Santo will be next.
- 2:12:47One ball, no strike.
- 2:12:51The injury to Harlan seemed
- 2:12:53to be like pulling
- 2:12:55a carcass out of the bottle. Here's the pitch on the way.
- 2:12:57Knock them all
- 2:12:59inside. Ball two.
- 2:13:03This now is
- 2:13:05Wilbur Wood's ball game.
- 2:13:07He would be the pitcher of record.
- 2:13:09Out of stretch.
- 2:13:11The pitch on the way to Billy Williams.
- 2:13:13All three is low.
- 2:13:15And Ron Santo is next.
- 2:13:19Gray ball, no strikes.
- 2:13:21And Tanner
- 2:13:23motions to Wood
- 2:13:25to throw a knuckleball with three and oh.
- 2:13:29Here's the pitch on the way.
- 2:13:31Knuckleball slung foul back and out of play.
- 2:13:33So he knew Williams would be
- 2:13:35swinging at that three nothing pitch.
- 2:13:37And he wasn't going to give him any fat
- 2:13:39fastball.
- 2:13:41Gray ball to the strike.
- 2:13:43Wilbur Wood trying to get out of this jam.
- 2:13:45The game now is
- 2:13:47tied and the Cubs have a chance to win it.
- 2:13:49With a runner at third and one out.
- 2:13:51Another runner at first base.
- 2:13:53The infield in. The outfield in.
- 2:13:55Here's the stretch.
- 2:13:57Here's the pitch on the way.
- 2:13:59Ball four. The bases are loaded.
- 2:14:05The next batter.
- 2:14:07Number six.
- 2:14:09Ron Santo.
- 2:14:11Ron Santo the batter.
- 2:14:13And they have to keep everybody in again.
- 2:14:15B.B. Richard
- 2:14:17is playing more
- 2:14:19half way. Andrews is a little bit
- 2:14:21more half way rather than
- 2:14:23on the grass. If Sando hits
- 2:14:25the ball hard they can still go for the double play.
- 2:14:27Around short and second. The pitch.
- 2:14:29Swings and a knuckle ball
- 2:14:31and he misses. One strike.
- 2:14:33No ball.
- 2:14:35Wilbur Wood. The Cubs have the bases
- 2:14:37loaded only one out. They could win it with
- 2:14:39a fly ball.
- 2:14:41Four four tie. Here's the stretch.
- 2:14:43The pitch on the way.
- 2:14:45Into the dirt. Great stop by Ed Herman.
- 2:14:47A one handed take up.
- 2:14:49Boy that'd be
- 2:14:51a one handed that way with a wild
- 2:14:53pitch.
- 2:14:55The Cubs were trailing
- 2:14:57four to nothing. Then four to one.
- 2:14:59Then four to two. Now tied four four.
- 2:15:01One ball.
- 2:15:03One strike. Sando digging in.
- 2:15:05Here's the pitch
- 2:15:07on the way. Swarovski
- 2:15:09pops up on the infield. Here's the fly
- 2:15:11roll. Andrews under the ball.
- 2:15:13Makes the cap. Santo
- 2:15:15pops Andrews.
- 2:15:17And now let's see who's going to hit it.
- 2:15:19Paul Popovich.
- 2:15:21Number 22.
- 2:15:23Paul Popovich.
- 2:15:25Paul Popovich will be the hitter.
- 2:15:27Let's pause quickly. This is the White Sox

- 2:15:31Come on Paul.
- 2:15:33Get in.
- 2:15:35Come on.
- 2:15:37Come on.
- 2:15:39Get in.
- 2:15:41Harry Carrey
- 2:15:43and Ralph Poucher.
- 2:15:45In Scottsdale
- 2:15:47where the Cubs have tied it up
- 2:15:49have the bases loaded two out here on the bottom
- 2:15:51of the ninth. The pitch. Popovich swings
- 2:15:53to the knuckleball and misses.
- 2:15:55Utility infielder the Cubs. Right handed batter
- 2:15:57actually a switch hitter.
- 2:15:59From Morgantown, West Virginia. 31
- 2:16:01years old. Paul Popovich
- 2:16:03hitting right handed. The infield back in normal
- 2:16:05position. The pitch.
- 2:16:07Knuckleball low.
- 2:16:09And that evens it up for the ball on the strike.
- 2:16:11Wilberwood.
- 2:16:13Halaude.
- 2:16:15RBI single to Kessinger.
- 2:16:17But if he could get out of this with
- 2:16:19a score tied he still would have done a great job.
- 2:16:211-1 pitch. Here it is.
- 2:16:23High pop foul.
- 2:16:25Over to the stand.
- 2:16:27Melton coming over. Coming over.
- 2:16:29No play.
- 2:16:31I don't believe he saw the ball.
- 2:16:35Because it actually
- 2:16:37landed on the playing
- 2:16:39side of the fence.
- 2:16:41That's that high sky and it's
- 2:16:43tough to see the ball come off the bat.
- 2:16:45Two strikes on the ball.
- 2:16:47I don't know whether he
- 2:16:49had a chance. I doubt if he could have reached it
- 2:16:51anyhow.
- 2:16:53Now the right hand hitter
- 2:16:55waiting. Two strikes on the ball.
- 2:16:57Wilberwood trying to pitch out of trouble.
- 2:16:59Here it is.
- 2:17:01He
- 2:17:03struck him out.
- 2:17:05And that re-fires the side.
- 2:17:07And it comes where a fly ball
- 2:17:09would have won it. Couldn't get it.
- 2:17:11Santo popped up. Popovich
- 2:17:13struck out. However
- 2:17:15they did tie it. Two runs.
- 2:17:17Three hits. One error.
- 2:17:19Three left. At the end
- 2:17:21of nine it's all tied up.
- 2:17:23The White Sox for the Cubs for
- 2:17:25Two runs, three hits, one error, three
- 2:17:27minutes on base.
- 2:17:29The end of nine it
- 2:17:31exceeds the Chicago Cubs for
- 2:17:33the Chicago White Sox for
- 2:17:35That Keely
- 2:17:37Could get me out I don't think.
- 2:17:43First extra in the game we see.
- 2:17:55Damn he was ahead of that.
- 2:17:57Down 15 for the
- 2:17:59Cubs. Number 52
- 2:18:01Bill Bottoms.
- 2:18:31We're going to the
- 2:18:33tenth inning and Bill Bottoms from UCLA
- 2:18:35a big strong hard-throwing
- 2:18:37right-hander will be the Cubs fourth
- 2:18:39pitcher.
- 2:18:41Mill Pappas started and went four innings
- 2:18:43allowed four hits and three runs.
- 2:18:45Ken Holzman pitched the next four, allowed
- 2:18:47four hits and one run. Jim Colburn
- 2:18:49worked one inning, allowed one hit and no run.
- 2:18:51And now Bill Bottoms is not even
- 2:18:53on the roster. Comes out.
- 2:18:55He pitched it here around last
- 2:18:57year where he won three, lost three,
- 2:18:59six, four, 210 pounds.
- 2:19:01Right-hander
- 2:19:03Bonham will be the new
- 2:19:05pitcher. Frank Andrews leads it off
- 2:19:07against him. The score
- 2:19:09tied four and four.
- 2:19:11The
- 2:19:13White Sox had a four to nothing lead going
- 2:19:15into the seventh.
- 2:19:19But the
- 2:19:21Cubs took to Steve Keely like
- 2:19:23they had been waiting for him for a month.
- 2:19:25Here's the pitch
- 2:19:27Andrews swings at the curveball
- 2:19:29and he misses. One strike and
- 2:19:31no ball.
- 2:19:33Nobody on, nobody out.
- 2:19:35Ball game in the top
- 2:19:37of the tenth.
- 2:19:39Now the pitch by
- 2:19:41the young right-hander. Swung and popped up
- 2:19:43on the infield. That'll be easy.
- 2:19:45Santo under the ball, makes
- 2:19:47the catch. Andrews
- 2:19:49fouls to Santo.
- 2:19:51Here now is Melton.
- 2:19:53He's three out of four today.
- 2:19:55The next batter, number 14,
- 2:19:57Bill Melton, third base. He's accounted
- 2:19:59for three runs
- 2:20:01himself. Committed to
- 2:20:03cross the air in the ninth inning
- 2:20:05as the Cubs came on to tie it up.
- 2:20:07Here's the pitch.
- 2:20:09Strike in there, sidearm
- 2:20:11curve at the knee.
- 2:20:13One strike, no balls. One man
- 2:20:15out. Game tied
- 2:20:17four, four in the tenth.
- 2:20:19Here's Bonham
- 2:20:21delivering.
- 2:20:23Sidearm curve outside. Boy, this is
- 2:20:25a good-looking young pitcher at this bottom.
- 2:20:27Only one year of professional baseball
- 2:20:29experience. But he's
- 2:20:31around that plate. He's tall, rangy
- 2:20:33and can pump
- 2:20:35that ball. One ball, one strike
- 2:20:37to delivery now.
- 2:20:39Curveball outside. Two
- 2:20:41balls and a strike.
- 2:20:43One gone.
- 2:20:45A little added treat here on his final day of
- 2:20:47spring training, an extra inning
- 2:20:49game.
- 2:20:51Extra curricular activity.
- 2:20:53Two balls and a strike.
- 2:20:55The pitch now.
- 2:20:57Outside,
- 2:20:59ball three. Carlos
- 2:21:01May will be next.
- 2:21:03The white side.
- 2:21:05Trying to go out in front again.
- 2:21:07Three balls,
- 2:21:09one strike.
- 2:21:11Now the pitch on the way.
- 2:21:13Strike. He curved it with
- 2:21:15three and one and got it in there.
- 2:21:17And that's
- 2:21:19something we notice all spring long.
- 2:21:21These young pitchers
- 2:21:23no longer try to throw the fastball by you
- 2:21:25when they're behind. They go to a breaking
- 2:21:27ball and get it over. Three, two, pitch to
- 2:21:29Melton. Bouncing ball to the second
- 2:21:31baseman. He, oh, bad hop.
- 2:21:33His beckered on the side of the head. Goes
- 2:21:35in the right center. Here's Melton playing for
- 2:21:37a double to throw. He goes in standing
- 2:21:39up. Now let's see if
- 2:21:41Becker is hurt.
- 2:21:43Melton hit a ground ball to Becker
- 2:21:45that took a bad hop off the side of his head
- 2:21:47and rolled in the right center for a double.
- 2:21:51Becker has got his cap off feeling
- 2:21:53to see if he's got a bump on his head.
- 2:21:57Here's Carlos May, tripled in a run
- 2:21:59in the second inning.
- 2:22:01Melton has had two doubles or homers in a single.
- 2:22:03He had two doubles in a single yesterday.
- 2:22:12I would imagine Melton is a guy
- 2:22:14that, they're going to walk Carlos
- 2:22:16May intentionally
- 2:22:18to get to Rick Ryker.
- 2:22:20Ryker the right-handed batter
- 2:22:24hoping that they can get the double play
- 2:22:26out of him.
- 2:22:28I would imagine, I started to say that
- 2:22:30when the season starts
- 2:22:32in late innings and
- 2:22:34close ball games, if the White Sox are ahead
- 2:22:36they will substitute
- 2:22:38somebody like Morales
- 2:22:40for defensive purposes around third base.
- 2:22:44Because all that Melton does
- 2:22:46a fine job,
- 2:22:48he isn't quite as good a fielder as he is a hitter
- 2:22:50and he's a, you got to have him in your lineup
- 2:22:52because he can really rock that ball.
- 2:22:54Rick Ryker up there,
- 2:22:56runners at first and second, he doubled in a run
- 2:22:58in the second inning, he's one out of four.
- 2:23:04Game tied, 4-4.
- 2:23:06Here's Bill Bonham
- 2:23:08getting set.
- 2:23:10The pitch to Ryker, here it is.
- 2:23:12Sidearm curve in the
- 2:23:14rebellious strike call.
- 2:23:16One strike, no ball, Ryker takes a look
- 2:23:18at Joe Lynette,
- 2:23:20coaching a third.
- 2:23:22The infield, straight away
- 2:23:24hoping for the ground ball.
- 2:23:26Ryker digging in, waves that bat around.
- 2:23:28And now the pitch.
- 2:23:30Here it is.
- 2:23:32He didn't mean to swing it over,
- 2:23:34here's the pitcher who'll throw him out at first.
- 2:23:36Ryker trying to stop
- 2:23:38his swing and tap one right back to the mound.
- 2:23:40The runners advance
- 2:23:42and it's all up to Rich McKinney.
- 2:23:44Now we're going to have a pinch hitter, Lee May.
- 2:23:46With runners at second and third,
- 2:23:48let's see how the Cubs counter here.
- 2:23:50They could walk May intentionally, but then
- 2:23:52Ed Herman.
- 2:23:54Lee May.
- 2:23:56Lee May.
- 2:23:58Who is hitting 5-29
- 2:24:00with 9 out of 17.
- 2:24:02One double, one triple, one homer,
- 2:24:04four RBI.
- 2:24:06Comes up as a pinch hitter with a chance to put the
- 2:24:08White Sox out in front.
- 2:24:10Bill Bonham, young right-hander.
- 2:24:14Looks down, has his sign.
- 2:24:16The pitch to Lee May.
- 2:24:18Swings and he foul-tips it, strike one.
- 2:24:20One strike, no balls.
- 2:24:22Ed Herman next.
- 2:24:24So they're pitching to May,
- 2:24:26even though first base is open.
- 2:24:28They'd rather pitch to May
- 2:24:30than to Herman, apparently.
- 2:24:34The outfield straight away and deep.
- 2:24:36Lee May digs in.
- 2:24:38Here's the windup by Bonham,
- 2:24:40the pitch to the left-hand batter.
- 2:24:42Low curveball outside.
- 2:24:44One ball, one strike.
- 2:24:46Melting the runner at third.
- 2:24:48Carlos May at second.
- 2:24:50Two men are gone.
- 2:24:52Tied up 4-4. We're in the tenth.
- 2:24:56Now Bill Bonham ready.
- 2:24:58Here's the pitch.
- 2:25:00Ground ball to the first baseman should be out of the inning.
- 2:25:02Pepitone has it, steps on the bag.
- 2:25:04And the inning is over.
- 2:25:06May grounded to Pepitone.
- 2:25:08Adds one hit.
- 2:25:10Two left.
- 2:25:12We're going to the bottom of the tenth tied 4-4.
- 2:25:20Steep.
- 2:25:22Yeah, we could have been at the pool.
- 2:25:36Now playing right field,
- 2:25:38moving over from left is number three,
- 2:25:40Walt Williams.
- 2:25:42Going to left field is number 48,
- 2:25:44Rick Riker. He was playing at center.
- 2:25:46Now playing right field.
- 2:25:48He was playing at center.
- 2:25:50He was playing at center.
- 2:25:52This is Stroud.
- 2:25:58The new center fielder,
- 2:26:00number six, Ed Stroud.
- 2:26:02Speaking of pitchers, this guy was two of us.
- 2:26:04Speaking of pitchers, this guy was two of us.
- 2:26:22We're going to the bottom of the tenth.
- 2:26:24Ed Stroud comes in the ball game now
- 2:26:26for the White Sox to play center field.
- 2:26:28Rick Riker moves from center field to left.
- 2:26:30Walt Williams moves from left field to right field.
- 2:26:36And leading off here for the Cubs
- 2:26:38will be Johnny Callison
- 2:26:40against the knuckleballing left-hander, Wilbur Wood.
- 2:26:48Don Kessinger, cup baby,
- 2:26:50comes in the ball game.
- 2:26:52Two runs single in the bottom of the ninth
- 2:26:54to tie it up.
- 2:27:00So here's Callison. It'll be Callison,
- 2:27:02Ortiz, and Rudolph
- 2:27:04here in the tenth.
- 2:27:06Tied up 4-4, playing for the
- 2:27:08baseball championship for Chicago,
- 2:27:10you might say. Here's the pitch.
- 2:27:12Knuckleball in there, a strike is called.
- 2:27:14One strike, no ball.
- 2:27:16Johnny Callison.
- 2:27:18He's two out of four today.
- 2:27:20Wilbur Wood gets set.
- 2:27:22Now the left-hander
- 2:27:24delivers.
- 2:27:26The pitch on the way.
- 2:27:28Knuckleball low and outside.
- 2:27:30That evens out a ball and a strike.
- 2:27:34Hope you'll stay with us for the postgame show
- 2:27:36which will feature Rick Talley.
- 2:27:38He's the sports editor of the Chicago today.
- 2:27:40Here's the pitch. Little tap, right back to Wilbur.
- 2:27:42He's got it. Should be an easy out.
- 2:27:44Rips the first, one gone.
- 2:27:46Callison tapped back to Wilbur Wood.
- 2:27:48That will bring up Jose Ortiz
- 2:27:50who started that night playing with a little blue
- 2:27:52single that dropped in strike center.
- 2:27:54An error by Melton followed
- 2:27:56which really set it up.
- 2:27:58And then after Wilbur Wood had gotten
- 2:28:00pepper-toed,
- 2:28:02Kessinger, behind in the count,
- 2:28:04two strikes and a ball,
- 2:28:06single the left to tie it up.
- 2:28:08Wood then had to get out of a jam.
- 2:28:10He allowed a single to Beckett
- 2:28:12and a base on balls to Williams to fill it up.
- 2:28:14But he got the ball,
- 2:28:16fill it up, fill him up.
- 2:28:18But he got Santo
- 2:28:20and then Popovich to get out of the inning.
- 2:28:22The pitch to Ortiz.
- 2:28:24Bouncing ball, towards short.
- 2:28:26B.B. Richard charges. There's a throw.
- 2:28:28He is out.
- 2:28:30He threw it in the dirt but Carlos came up with it.
- 2:28:36The batter, number 15,
- 2:28:38Ken Rudolph, catcher.
- 2:28:42As down-emph as relayed to us,
- 2:28:44there's no fracture in Joe Harlan's knee.
- 2:28:46That's positive news.
- 2:28:48He has his knee wrapped up
- 2:28:50and he'll accompany the Cubs to Chicago
- 2:28:52this afternoon.
- 2:28:54Here's Rudolph, the pitch.
- 2:28:56Knuckleball outside.
- 2:28:58One ball, no strikes, two out, nobody on.
- 2:29:00Ed Herman will lead it off
- 2:29:02for the White Sox in the 11.
- 2:29:04If we can
- 2:29:06go that far, here's the pitch.
- 2:29:08Bouncing ball to Richard. Come on in.
- 2:29:10Lee, he's got it. There's the peg.
- 2:29:12He's high but he is out.
- 2:29:14Ed Richard's got one of the most powerful
- 2:29:16but he still has
- 2:29:18an erratic arm.
- 2:29:20Now that one he almost threw over Carlos May's head.
- 2:29:22Carlos is grinning.
- 2:29:24He had a leap into the air, come down
- 2:29:26and stab at the bag. The throw before he had a scoop
- 2:29:28out of the dirt. And the same men
- 2:29:30threw both of them. So it's 1-2-3.
- 2:29:32Wilbur Wood breezed through the tenth.
- 2:29:34And at the end of tenth, it's still tied.
- 2:29:36White Sox 4, Cubs 4.
- 2:29:42Two days left.
- 2:29:44Two days left.
- 2:29:46Two days left.
- 2:29:48Two days left.
- 2:29:50We certainly hope you enjoyed today's ball game.
- 2:29:52We want to remind you
- 2:29:54that the souvenir available
- 2:29:56in front of the grandstand
- 2:29:58is the
- 2:30:00Anniversary Souvenir Book
- 2:30:02for the
- 2:30:04silver anniversary
- 2:30:06of the Cactus League. The entire story of
- 2:30:08the Cactus League in this book was stories of all
- 2:30:10the teams that have played out here.
- 2:30:12We think you'll really enjoy it and that's
- 2:30:14for sale for only one dollar.
- 2:30:18Do we have anything on bottom?
- 2:30:20No, nothing.
- 2:30:22Ask a flight attendant.
- 2:30:24Let him see if he's got a little more silver.
- 2:30:26Yeah, he's a...I think he is.
- 2:30:30I think there's something
- 2:30:32on top of him.
- 2:30:34No, the little one.
- 2:30:36No, there's nothing in there.
- 2:30:42There's something in the back there.
- 2:30:44Not much.
- 2:30:46We're going to the eleventh inning now
- 2:30:48and Ed Herman is going to lead it all.
- 2:30:50He's got one out of three facing Bill Bonham.
- 2:30:52Ed Herman leading it all.
- 2:30:54Wilbur Wood due to be next.
- 2:30:58The ball game in the eleventh.
- 2:31:00Five, four and four.
- 2:31:02We'd have been around the Executive House
- 2:31:04pool by now if Kessinger hadn't gotten
- 2:31:06a base hit to tie it up.
- 2:31:08That's baseball for you.
- 2:31:12Ed Herman
- 2:31:14digging in.
- 2:31:20Young Bill Bonham, right-hander delivers.
- 2:31:22Herman takes a fastball high.
- 2:31:24One ball, no strikes. Herman hit
- 2:31:2619 homers last season for the White Sox.
- 2:31:28Hasn't hit one this spring as yet.
- 2:31:32Now the line, the pitch.
- 2:31:34Popped up.
- 2:31:36Santo's going to have a play
- 2:31:38over near the stands. He's got room now
- 2:31:40and he's there. Hey!
- 2:31:42Ball's off balance, holds on to the ball.
- 2:31:44Herman foul to Santo.
- 2:31:46One out.
- 2:31:48Wilbur Wood
- 2:31:50will hit for himself.
- 2:31:54He'll bounce right-handed, he pitches left-handed.
- 2:31:56Looking ahead to the Cubs oven.
- 2:32:00They'll have Pemperton, Kessinger and Beckard coming up.
- 2:32:04One out, nobody on. Chuck Tanner
- 2:32:06and Leo DeRosha are talking.
- 2:32:08Again,
- 2:32:10could be discussing how long
- 2:32:12whether there's any
- 2:32:14deadline on this game
- 2:32:16as a result of playing connections.
- 2:32:18One out,
- 2:32:20nobody on. The pitch to
- 2:32:22Wilbur Wood. Fastball
- 2:32:24inside.
- 2:32:26Wood batting right-handed.
- 2:32:28One away.
- 2:32:30We're in the 11th.
- 2:32:32Now the signal
- 2:32:34given.
- 2:32:38Wilbur Wood waiting.
- 2:32:40Bonham's pit. Strike call.
- 2:32:42This kid pumps that ball hard.
- 2:32:44Two balls and a strike.
- 2:32:46One man out.
- 2:32:48Bonham has been
- 2:32:50he wasn't, he isn't
- 2:32:52even on the Cubs roster.
- 2:32:54But they haven't cut him yet.
- 2:32:56Here's the pitch. Strike call.
- 2:32:58Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:33:00E.B. Richard will be next.
- 2:33:02Followed by Wall Williams.
- 2:33:04They can keep it going.
- 2:33:06Now to wind up the
- 2:33:082-2 pitch on the way.
- 2:33:10He struck him out on a curveball.
- 2:33:14Wood is caught out on strikes
- 2:33:16and here is Richard. He's had one hit today.
- 2:33:18One out of four.
- 2:33:20The next batter, number nine, Lee Richard.
- 2:33:22The Cubs made some cuts today.
- 2:33:24They haven't given us the information.
- 2:33:26And I know Fuzau and Danny Breeden
- 2:33:28were two of the four or five boys' Cubs.
- 2:33:30They were still
- 2:33:32about five men over. Here's the pitch on the way
- 2:33:34now. Richard takes a curveball
- 2:33:36outside.
- 2:33:38E.B. Richard, the leadoff
- 2:33:40man. Wall Williams next. Score
- 2:33:42tied 4-4.
- 2:33:44And every time
- 2:33:46the Cubs hold the White Sox in
- 2:33:48the next innings, the better
- 2:33:50their chances of winning the ball again.
- 2:33:52Here's Richard following the ball
- 2:33:54back to the screen. It bounces back
- 2:33:56to where Wall Williams
- 2:33:58is standing in the on-deck circle and
- 2:34:00he kind of plays high-lie with
- 2:34:02his bat. Juggles
- 2:34:04the ball on the end of the bat and then
- 2:34:06catches it. One-one pitch.
- 2:34:08Low fastball.
- 2:34:10Two balls
- 2:34:12in a strike. And should B.B. get on,
- 2:34:14you can expect him to steal. He stole a base
- 2:34:16on the fifth.
- 2:34:20Two balls in a strike. Now the
- 2:34:22pitch. Swung and looped off the
- 2:34:24end of the bat foul. That
- 2:34:26evens it. Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:34:28Two out.
- 2:34:30Game tied
- 2:34:324-4.
- 2:34:34Would it be something here if this wound up
- 2:34:36in a tie and they had to call it off because of
- 2:34:38their playing connections?
- 2:34:40From a public relations standpoint,
- 2:34:42it would be perfect. Here's the pitch
- 2:34:44outside ball three.
- 2:34:46I think if I were them, I would
- 2:34:48do just that.
- 2:34:50And then the
- 2:34:52fans of the White Sox
- 2:34:54could be satisfied and the fans of the Cubs would
- 2:34:56be happy. Neither team would yet
- 2:34:58be the city champion.
- 2:35:00Here's the pitch.
- 2:35:02Swung on on a looping liner in the center of base
- 2:35:04F. B.B. rounds first base.
- 2:35:06Let's watch him. Goes halfway to second.
- 2:35:08Comes back.
- 2:35:10So Richard gets his second hitter.
- 2:35:12And here's Walt
- 2:35:14Williams. He's been a hero in
- 2:35:16a lot of games during spring training.
- 2:35:18Can he do it again?
- 2:35:20Williams has shifted to right field.
- 2:35:22Williams drove in a run in the
- 2:35:24seventh.
- 2:35:28With a base hit to right.
- 2:35:32Steps into the batter's box.
- 2:35:34Bill Bonham, a sidearm right-handed
- 2:35:36with good stuff.
- 2:35:38B.B.
- 2:35:40Richard taking a lead off first base.
- 2:35:42Here's the stretch.
- 2:35:44Here's the pitch. There he goes.
- 2:35:46Wild pitch. He might wind up at third.
- 2:35:48He's sliding though, not knowing that the ball got away.
- 2:35:50He's sliding in a second base
- 2:35:52with a stolen base.
- 2:35:54Not knowing that the pitch had gotten away.
- 2:35:56And if he'd have kept this speed,
- 2:35:58I would have been a bit surprised to see him going away to third.
- 2:36:00You know, Harry, in these wild pitches,
- 2:36:02situations like that, these runners have a
- 2:36:04problem in judgment because
- 2:36:06the ball comes back over this backstop and
- 2:36:08right back to the catcher.
- 2:36:10So now, just a base hit
- 2:36:12with put the White Sox ahead.
- 2:36:14Walt Williams, waiting.
- 2:36:16One ball, no strikes.
- 2:36:18Here's the pitch.
- 2:36:20Low and outside, ball two.
- 2:36:22And Williams calls time to squeeze
- 2:36:24the rosin bag. Mike Andrews
- 2:36:26is next.
- 2:36:28Williams,
- 2:36:30no neck.
- 2:36:32195 pounder on a
- 2:36:341 foot 6 inch frame.
- 2:36:38Reminiscent.
- 2:36:40They're going to walk him intentionally to get to Andrews now.
- 2:36:42They're going to
- 2:36:44walk him intentionally. An intentional
- 2:36:46path. That brings up Mike Andrews
- 2:36:48with runners at first and second.
- 2:36:50Andrews has been hitless today. Nothing
- 2:36:52out of five.
- 2:36:56Walt Williams
- 2:36:58twists down the first pitch.
- 2:37:00So here's Andrews.
- 2:37:02Nothing out of five.
- 2:37:04With a chance here to put the White Sox
- 2:37:06in front.
- 2:37:10Walt Williams at first base.
- 2:37:12B.B. Richard at second base.
- 2:37:16Andrews, a big
- 2:37:18red number two on the back of his
- 2:37:20pastel blue uniform.
- 2:37:22Here's the pitch.
- 2:37:24Curveball inside, ball one.
- 2:37:26One ball, no strikes. They play Andrews
- 2:37:28straight away and deep.
- 2:37:30I'd like to see him plug the gap in either left center
- 2:37:32or right center.
- 2:37:34Right hand hitter waiting.
- 2:37:36Bonham
- 2:37:38in his second inning of relief.
- 2:37:40Now the stretch. Here's
- 2:37:42the pitch. Start of the swing
- 2:37:44held up curveball hit the outside corner of the knee
- 2:37:46and that evens it. A ball and a strike.
- 2:37:50Bonham
- 2:37:52has a good curveball.
- 2:37:54Taller rangey kid from UCLA.
- 2:37:56One ball, one strike.
- 2:37:58The pitch to Andrews.
- 2:38:00And here it is.
- 2:38:02Low outside.
- 2:38:04Two balls and a strike.
- 2:38:06Bill Melton would be next.
- 2:38:08Melton has had four hits today. Four out of five.
- 2:38:14Without his bat the White Sox wouldn't be leading
- 2:38:16and without his air the Cubs wouldn't be tied.
- 2:38:18So that's how it goes.
- 2:38:22Two balls and a strike.
- 2:38:24Here is the
- 2:38:26pitch. Swung the Mr. Curve.
- 2:38:30Without his bat the
- 2:38:32White Sox wouldn't have had the early lead they
- 2:38:34enjoyed a four to nothing.
- 2:38:38He doubled and scored around the second. He homered in the third.
- 2:38:40He's also singled and doubled since then.
- 2:38:44But Andrews has evened up two balls
- 2:38:46two strikes.
- 2:38:48And the pitch.
- 2:38:50Here it is. Swings and he
- 2:38:52foul tips. Bonham keeps
- 2:38:54throwing him sidearm curveball.
- 2:38:58Andrews keeps pulling him.
- 2:39:00Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:39:02Top of the 11th.
- 2:39:04Score tied 4-4.
- 2:39:06White Sunshine.
- 2:39:08It's four o'clock
- 2:39:10here in Arizona.
- 2:39:12Five o'clock in Chicago.
- 2:39:16The dancing
- 2:39:18at the nightclubs in Tokyo.
- 2:39:20Here's the pitch.
- 2:39:22Outside curveball
- 2:39:24three. Boy he almost hit that corner with that.
- 2:39:26And now the
- 2:39:28count is three and two and the runners will be going with the pitch.
- 2:39:30Three balls, two strikes.
- 2:39:34Bonham
- 2:39:36steps back off the rubber.
- 2:39:38He's going to pitch off the stretch of course.
- 2:39:40Richard will be breaking
- 2:39:42as will Walt Williams.
- 2:39:44Three balls, two strikes. Here's the stretch.
- 2:39:46Here's the pitch. There go the runners.
- 2:39:48Ball four high.
- 2:39:50The bases are loaded.
- 2:39:52And here's Melton. Can he do it again?
- 2:39:58The bases are loaded with two outs.
- 2:40:00Melton has had
- 2:40:02two doubles, a single and a homer.
- 2:40:06Here's the spot where he'll be looking just for
- 2:40:08the base hit.
- 2:40:18Bonham had a pitch out of trouble in the tenth.
- 2:40:20And now he's in a jam
- 2:40:22again here in the eleventh.
- 2:40:24Bases loaded, two outs.
- 2:40:26Melton waiting.
- 2:40:28Here's the windup, the pitch on the way.
- 2:40:30Curve right in there
- 2:40:32a strike ball. This kid has a
- 2:40:34playing curveball.
- 2:40:36Just a year out of college
- 2:40:38he has great pitching points.
- 2:40:40One strike and no ball.
- 2:40:42Bases jammed with
- 2:40:44two outs. The pitch to Bill Melton.
- 2:40:46Almost hit him inside.
- 2:40:48Boy he's thrown about seven
- 2:40:50curveballs in a row.
- 2:40:52The cub catcher
- 2:40:54Ken Rudolph must have an olive stuck
- 2:40:56between his fingers.
- 2:40:58All he signals
- 2:41:00is number two for the curveball.
- 2:41:02One ball, one strike.
- 2:41:04Right hand hitter waiting.
- 2:41:06The pitch by Bonham.
- 2:41:08Here it is.
- 2:41:10Popped out of the out of the center.
- 2:41:12Spectered under the ball.
- 2:41:14And he makes the catch.
- 2:41:16Melton pops the becker.
- 2:41:18So it's no run.
- 2:41:20One hit, no errors. Three left.
- 2:41:22The White Sox have strayed at five
- 2:41:24in the last two innings.
- 2:41:26And the momentum of this ball game
- 2:41:28seems to have moved slowly
- 2:41:30over towards the cub side.
- 2:41:32So we move into the bottom of the 11th
- 2:41:34still tied.
- 2:41:36Four and four.
- 2:41:38Four.
- 2:42:08Four.
- 2:42:38Today folks, pick up your souvenir copy
- 2:42:40of the silver adornment tree
- 2:42:42of the Cactus Plate.
- 2:42:44The first batter
- 2:42:46of the competition.
- 2:42:48This is the Chicago White Sox baseball network.
- 2:42:50Four.
- 2:42:52Four.
- 2:42:54Four.
- 2:42:56Three.
- 2:42:58Nice play, Carey.
- 2:43:00Harry Carey
- 2:43:02back at the ballpark bottom of the 11th
- 2:43:04with Joe Pepitone leading it off.
- 2:43:06He's had one out of two today.
- 2:43:08Here's the pitch by Wilbur Wood.
- 2:43:10Knocked the ball a little bit low.
- 2:43:12One ball, no strikes.
- 2:43:14Pepitone drove in their first run in the seventh inning.
- 2:43:16With two out, he single the center
- 2:43:18to score Rudolph.
- 2:43:20Here's the pitch on the way.
- 2:43:22Knocked the ball in there. A beauty, a strike called.
- 2:43:24And the count evens. A ball and a strike.
- 2:43:26It'll be Pepitone, Kessinger, and Becker.
- 2:43:28And if anybody gets on, Billy Williams
- 2:43:30for the Cubs in the 11th.
- 2:43:32The White Sox have to hold them
- 2:43:34to have a chance. Here's the pitch.
- 2:43:36Knocked the ball, swirled the dribbler toward
- 2:43:38Sharpe. Here's Lee Richard's throw.
- 2:43:40He is out on a good play.
- 2:43:42Richard
- 2:43:44throws out Pepitone.
- 2:43:46Pepitone hit that off the end of the foul.
- 2:43:48He just started to
- 2:43:50ooze toward Sharpe
- 2:43:52with a lateral reverse spin.
- 2:43:54Richard failed the ball and then
- 2:43:56gunned him out.
- 2:43:58Here's Kessinger
- 2:44:00who sent this game into extra innings.
- 2:44:04One out, nobody on.
- 2:44:06That was his only
- 2:44:08hit of the game, a single off Wilbur Wood to drive
- 2:44:10in two runs of the night. The pitch.
- 2:44:12Knocked the ball low. Kessinger
- 2:44:14switch hitter.
- 2:44:16Boy, this guy has made himself
- 2:44:18a $60,000
- 2:44:20a year shortstop.
- 2:44:22Here's the pitch.
- 2:44:24And knocked the ball inside.
- 2:44:26And he had to work hard.
- 2:44:28He learned to switch hit.
- 2:44:30Always had
- 2:44:32great range and fine arm.
- 2:44:3429 year old
- 2:44:36shortstop. The pitch by Wilbur Wood.
- 2:44:38Line driver to the third base.
- 2:44:40Kessinger lined hard
- 2:44:42to melt. Two up,
- 2:44:44two down. Here's Glenn Becker.
- 2:44:46The next batter, number 18
- 2:44:48Glenn Becker. Second base.
- 2:44:52Becker
- 2:44:54from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
- 2:44:56He's 31 years old.
- 2:44:58He came up
- 2:45:00with the Cubs in 1955.
- 2:45:02Right-handed hitter
- 2:45:04waiting. Two men out. He's
- 2:45:06two out of five today. The pitch.
- 2:45:08Knuckleball low. Billy Williams is
- 2:45:10next.
- 2:45:12The final exhibition
- 2:45:14game of the season is an extra inning
- 2:45:16thriller between the Cubs and the White Sox
- 2:45:18for the mythical city title. The pitch.
- 2:45:20Inside.
- 2:45:22Don't walk
- 2:45:24this guy with Billy Williams coming up next.
- 2:45:28Two balls, no strikes.
- 2:45:30Becker
- 2:45:32waiting. Here's Wilbur Wood's
- 2:45:34pitch. Right
- 2:45:36in there a beauty of strike call.
- 2:45:42Glenn Becker, not
- 2:45:44known for his power.
- 2:45:46More of a singles doubles hitter. There's a fastball
- 2:45:48inside.
- 2:45:50Becker
- 2:45:52last year.
- 2:45:54Hit three home runs the year before he had only one.
- 2:45:56In his major league career
- 2:45:58he's hit a total of 17.
- 2:46:00Here's the pitch.
- 2:46:02High fly ball should be caught.
- 2:46:04Rick Rightford is there waiting.
- 2:46:06Makes the catch to retire
- 2:46:08to side. So Wilbur Wood
- 2:46:10is second straight perfect inning.
- 2:46:12Nothing across. At the end of 11
- 2:46:14tied up 4-4.
- 2:46:18Once again a change of cassettes
- 2:46:20and a few minutes missed.
- 2:46:22From the belt the pitch.
- 2:46:24Wide curveball. Outside
- 2:46:26and the count.
- 2:46:28Ball two.
- 2:46:30And Rick Rightford steps out of the batter's box
- 2:46:32to look at Joe Lynette.
- 2:46:34To see whether it's hit or take.
- 2:46:36Ed Stroud will be next.
- 2:46:38Runner at first base, nobody out.
- 2:46:40We're in the 12th.
- 2:46:42In each of the last two innings the
- 2:46:44White Sox threat. Only to be
- 2:46:46stopped. They've stranded five in the
- 2:46:48last two innings.
- 2:46:50Here's the pitch to Rick Rightford.
- 2:46:52Right in there.
- 2:46:54And if he had the hit sign
- 2:46:56he'll never get a better pitch.
- 2:46:58Two balls and a strike.
- 2:47:00Runner at first base,
- 2:47:02nobody out.
- 2:47:04Top of the 12th.
- 2:47:08Here's the lead
- 2:47:10by Carlos May Pepitone holding him close.
- 2:47:12Now the pitch.
- 2:47:14Swings it a bad ball. A little roller to the
- 2:47:16right hand base and Bechert to Kessinger for one
- 2:47:18over the first save.
- 2:47:20Rightford rolled to
- 2:47:22Bechert who forced Carlos
- 2:47:24May with a toss to Kessinger.
- 2:47:26And here's Ed Stroud.
- 2:47:30Stroud has been a hot hitter.
- 2:47:32He's had seven out of ten since
- 2:47:34joining the White Sox.
- 2:47:36Two doubles and a triple included.
- 2:47:38Rightford at first went out.
- 2:47:40I think
- 2:47:42a sign might have been missed on that one.
- 2:47:44Rick Rightford went after the ball
- 2:47:46as if he thought the hit and run were on.
- 2:47:48And Carlos May
- 2:47:50didn't break off first as if
- 2:47:52there wasn't any hit and run on.
- 2:47:54Because Rightford went after the bad
- 2:47:56ball as if to protect the runner.
- 2:47:58Pitched to Stroud. Curve ball in there
- 2:48:00at the knee. One strike, no ball.
- 2:48:04Barnum has been tremendous.
- 2:48:06He's pitched out of trouble in each of three
- 2:48:08innings that he's with.
- 2:48:10One strike, no ball.
- 2:48:12Now the pitch. Pitch out.
- 2:48:14There goes the runner. They should throw him out a mile.
- 2:48:16He's out.
- 2:48:20From Rudolph to Kessinger.
- 2:48:22And the Cubs
- 2:48:24have diagnosed the play perfectly.
- 2:48:26Called for the pitch out and Rudolph
- 2:48:28gunned him out.
- 2:48:30Now Stroud is up there with nobody on base.
- 2:48:32The count on him a ball and a strike.
- 2:48:36Bill Barnum
- 2:48:38looks down.
- 2:48:40Stands 6-5.
- 2:48:42Here's the pitch on the way.
- 2:48:44Stroud takes a strike.
- 2:48:46Over the outside corner. Two strikes and a ball.
- 2:48:48Ed Herman would be next
- 2:48:50if Stroud could get on there.
- 2:48:52Looking ahead to the Cubs 12th it will be Billy Williams
- 2:48:54around Santo.
- 2:48:56And then the pitcher.
- 2:48:58One ball, two strikes, the pitch.
- 2:49:00All low, evens it up.
- 2:49:04All evened it. Two balls,
- 2:49:06two strikes.
- 2:49:08Ed Stroud
- 2:49:10with the white socks, the second go around.
- 2:49:14Was with Washington last year, the last couple of years.
- 2:49:16Here's the pitch.
- 2:49:18Swung and they fouled it.
- 2:49:20The count stays the same.
- 2:49:22Crowd quiet now.
- 2:49:24Terry Forster is warming up
- 2:49:26in the bullpen.
- 2:49:30Cincinnati enjoys its
- 2:49:32annual inaugural in the
- 2:49:34National League tomorrow afternoon.
- 2:49:36Here's the pitch.
- 2:49:38He struck him out.
- 2:49:40Stroud goes out swinging.
- 2:49:42And Barnum has been a most
- 2:49:44impressive pitcher. No runs, one hit, no errors,
- 2:49:46nobody left. We're moving to the bottom of the
- 2:49:4812th tied 4-4.
- 2:49:54I'm good right now.
- 2:49:56I may go right to the car and go home.
- 2:50:02Well, somebody will hit the roof here.
- 2:50:04Look.
- 2:50:06Crowd noise.
- 2:50:26Ed Herman,
- 2:50:28pitcher and a baby
- 2:50:30pitcher.
- 2:50:32Crowd noise.
- 2:50:34Crowd noise.
- 2:50:36Crowd noise.
- 2:50:38Crowd noise.
- 2:50:40Crowd noise.
- 2:50:42Crowd noise.
- 2:50:44Crowd noise.
- 2:50:46We go into the bottom of the 12th. Billy Williams
- 2:50:48elided off of the Cubs. He's walked three times
- 2:50:50today. He's nothing out of two.
- 2:50:52Crowd noise.
- 2:50:54Crowd noise.
- 2:50:56The first batter for the Cubs, the bottom of the 12th
- 2:50:58city, number 26,
- 2:51:00Billy Williams.
- 2:51:02And Wilbur Wood really has a job
- 2:51:04in this inning.
- 2:51:06Billy Williams leads it off, then Ron Santo.
- 2:51:08And then the pitcher
- 2:51:10coming up.
- 2:51:12Wood has pitched.
- 2:51:14He's retired the last eight minutes
- 2:51:16base. Here's the pitch on the way. Swung
- 2:51:18and a knuckleball and he missed. Strike one.
- 2:51:20One strike and no ball.
- 2:51:22The outfield plays
- 2:51:24you know where.
- 2:51:26Walt Williams is almost out of sight
- 2:51:28in right field.
- 2:51:30Now the wind up, the pitch on the way. Here it is.
- 2:51:32Knuckleball swings
- 2:51:34and he misses. Strike two.
- 2:51:36Who did he go around?
- 2:51:38Wilbur Wood ahead of him. Two strikes
- 2:51:40and nothing. Santo
- 2:51:42be up there next.
- 2:51:44Out of sight.
- 2:51:46Here's the pitch on the way.
- 2:51:48Knuckleball swung and there's a long drive.
- 2:51:50Way back. Might be a
- 2:51:52stride near the wall. Way back. Way
- 2:51:54back and he makes the catch.
- 2:51:56Holy cow.
- 2:51:58430 feet away.
- 2:52:00Williams of the count
- 2:52:02of two strikes and no balls.
- 2:52:04Wilbur Wood threw him another knuckleball
- 2:52:06and got it up around his eyes.
- 2:52:08It didn't quite knuckle as much as the other two.
- 2:52:10And Williams almost ended the game.
- 2:52:12Stroud went
- 2:52:14back to the 430 mark to haul it in.
- 2:52:18Here's Santo. Popped up with
- 2:52:20the bases loaded and went out of the ninth when the Cubs
- 2:52:22could have won it.
- 2:52:24He is nothing out of, one out of four.
- 2:52:26One out of four is right. One out of five
- 2:52:28is right. First pitch knuckleball
- 2:52:30inside. One out, nobody
- 2:52:32on. Bottom of the twelfth tied four
- 2:52:34four. White Sox
- 2:52:36haven't scored for a long time since
- 2:52:38the seventh inning. Here's Santo
- 2:52:40hitting a knuckleball foul off to the left.
- 2:52:42One ball, one
- 2:52:44strike, one out, nobody on.
- 2:52:48Gary
- 2:52:50Gestad is going to be the pinch hitter next.
- 2:52:52An infielder, Gary Gestad.
- 2:52:56JSTADT, here's the pitch.
- 2:52:58He swings and he misses.
- 2:53:00Two strikes
- 2:53:02and a ball. Santo was
- 2:53:04trying to end it.
- 2:53:06Billy Williams a moment ago almost did
- 2:53:08end it. His long drive
- 2:53:10fortunately was hit to the longest
- 2:53:12part of the park. And
- 2:53:14Stroud went about 430 feet
- 2:53:16away to grab it.
- 2:53:18Two strikes and a ball.
- 2:53:20The pitch to Santo, here it is.
- 2:53:22Knuckleball a little bit outside.
- 2:53:24That evens it.
- 2:53:26Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:53:28Gary Gestad
- 2:53:30will be next. Here's the
- 2:53:32pitch on the way.
- 2:53:34Ground ball to short, B.B. Richard on the big half.
- 2:53:36Here's the throw. End time.
- 2:53:38It pulled Carlos
- 2:53:40May off the bag but he tagged Santo
- 2:53:42on the chest going by.
- 2:53:44Two gone.
- 2:53:46And here's
- 2:53:48Gary Gestad.
- 2:53:50Number 16, Gary Gestad.
- 2:53:56Seven, eight, nine,
- 2:53:58ten, eleven. B.B.
- 2:54:00Richard has handled eleven chances without
- 2:54:02an error on shortstop today.
- 2:54:04Here's the pitch to Gestad.
- 2:54:06He bunts. Down the third base line.
- 2:54:08Ball, strike one.
- 2:54:10One strike and a ball.
- 2:54:12Oh, thank you.
- 2:54:14It's fine.
- 2:54:16Boy, we're dehydrated.
- 2:54:18This hot sun shining
- 2:54:20right through on the back, on our
- 2:54:22back in this booth.
- 2:54:24Too bad we don't have a beer
- 2:54:26sponsor. This would be a great time
- 2:54:28for an ad lib.
- 2:54:30Two men are out.
- 2:54:32One strike and no balls on
- 2:54:34Gary Gestad.
- 2:54:36Batting for Bill Bonham. Here's the pitch
- 2:54:38by Wilbur Wood.
- 2:54:40Knocks him back.
- 2:54:42This is Wilbur Wood's.
- 2:54:46He's actually pitched now.
- 2:54:48This will be his fourth full inning.
- 2:54:50He relieved with runners at second and third
- 2:54:52and nobody out. White Sox leading
- 2:54:54four to two in the ninth. Here's the pitch.
- 2:54:56Knocked a ball, gets away.
- 2:54:58From Ed Herman.
- 2:55:04Johnny Callison will be next to the cup.
- 2:55:06Gestad trying to get on.
- 2:55:08Two balls and a strike. Two off.
- 2:55:10Ed Herman will lead it off on the
- 2:55:1213th for the White Sox. The pitch.
- 2:55:14Low, ball three.
- 2:55:16Three balls and a strike.
- 2:55:18Gary Gestad.
- 2:55:20A Chicago, Illinois boy
- 2:55:22now lives out here in
- 2:55:24Scottsdale.
- 2:55:26Three balls, one strike.
- 2:55:28Here's the pitch.
- 2:55:30Strike two call.
- 2:55:32Gestad hit two homers for
- 2:55:34Tacoma last year and one for San Antonio.
- 2:55:36Twenty-four year old infielder.
- 2:55:38Three balls, two strikes.
- 2:55:40Here's the pitch.
- 2:55:42Ball four. He walked him and here's Johnny Callison.
- 2:55:48The batter, number six,
- 2:55:50Johnny Callison.
- 2:55:52Right field.
- 2:55:56Boy that Burnham pitched
- 2:55:58three pressure innings, allowed three hits.
- 2:56:00No runs.
- 2:56:02And he was really tough in the clean and
- 2:56:04he was really tough in the clinch.
- 2:56:06He walked three and struck out two.
- 2:56:12So the Cubs will have another pitcher on the 13th I suppose,
- 2:56:14although I don't see anybody warming up.
- 2:56:16Here's the throw for the first runner back.
- 2:56:20Johnny Callison has had two hits.
- 2:56:24Two out of five.
- 2:56:26Here's the throw to first runner back again.
- 2:56:28Gary Gestad.
- 2:56:30Here's the runner at first.
- 2:56:32He drew a base on balls.
- 2:56:34That's a second given up by Wilbur Wood.
- 2:56:38Now the stretch.
- 2:56:40Here's the pitch.
- 2:56:42Into the dirt. There he goes.
- 2:56:44The second base. A throw by Herman.
- 2:56:46Close. Safe at second base.
- 2:56:48So the Cubs have the winning run at second.
- 2:56:50A wild pitch.
- 2:56:52Herman quickly recovered it
- 2:56:54and flared to second and they almost
- 2:56:56got Gestad.
- 2:56:58Now Callison in the spot to
- 2:57:00win it.
- 2:57:04We're in the bottom of the 12th. Two out.
- 2:57:06With two out,
- 2:57:08Wilbur Wood walked
- 2:57:10the pinch hitter Gary Gestad.
- 2:57:14After retiring, Billy Williams
- 2:57:16and Ron Santo.
- 2:57:18Now a wild pitch has put him
- 2:57:20in scoring position
- 2:57:22and a pitch to Callison on the way.
- 2:57:24Knock a ball inside.
- 2:57:26Two balls, no strikes.
- 2:57:28Two out, a runner in scoring position.
- 2:57:30The outfield plays Callison
- 2:57:32to pull.
- 2:57:34Now to stretch the hesitation.
- 2:57:36Here it is.
- 2:57:38Ground ball at the middle. There's the ball
- 2:57:40there. Here's Gestad.
- 2:57:42Around third. He's going to score.
- 2:57:44And the Cubs have won the city championship
- 2:57:46beating the White Sox in four
- 2:57:48innings, five to pull.
- 2:57:50So Johnny Callison bounce back
- 2:57:52and he's going to score.
- 2:57:54So Johnny Callison bounce
- 2:57:56right up the middle. His third hit
- 2:57:58of the game. And Wilbur Wood
- 2:58:00an unfortunate
- 2:58:02base on balls with two out
- 2:58:04to a relatively
- 2:58:06weak pinch hitter.
- 2:58:08Relatively when you consider Billy Williams
- 2:58:10and Ron Santo, whom he had just retired.
- 2:58:12So that actually
- 2:58:14cost them the ball again. And it
- 2:58:16is one run, one hit
- 2:58:18for the Chicago Cubs in the bottom
- 2:58:20of the 12th. And they win the
- 2:58:22City Series coming from behind
- 2:58:24to nip the White Sox here in
- 2:58:2612 innings, five to four.
