- 0:06(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:08This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:13Our current series is Gentle Witnesses, sharing the
- 0:16good news at work in a way that
- 0:18actually makes sense.
- 0:24We've been talking about openness, and when I
- 0:27think about openness or closeness, somebody's willingness to
- 0:31be vulnerable versus their need to protect themselves,
- 0:35I sometimes think about cats.
- 0:39I don't know if you've ever interacted with
- 0:41a cat, where the cat is a little
- 0:42bit aloof, a little bit closed off, a
- 0:45little bit not desirous of the most vulnerable,
- 0:49intimate community access.
- 0:52I have two cats, and my cats, Landry
- 0:56and Dylan, are very social.
- 0:59They're very friendly.
- 1:00They're unusual on the spectrum of cats in
- 1:03this regard.
- 1:04But even my cats, sometimes when someone comes
- 1:06over or when there's a lot of people,
- 1:08they go and hang out in a different
- 1:10room, especially Dylan, the big fluffy one.
- 1:14He just he's not fond of crowds.
- 1:16He likes individual people.
- 1:18He'll even meet strangers, but he's not.
- 1:19He's not fun of crowds.
- 1:20That just kind of puts him off.
- 1:22He doesn't feel open.
- 1:24There's this wonderful painter in the Boston area
- 1:27named Nan Porter, and she's a cat person,
- 1:31and she has this wonderful insight.
- 1:32She says, if cats could talk, they wouldn't.
- 1:37And I feel like just like cats are
- 1:39like this, all of us probably have friends
- 1:41or acquaintances, co-workers, others like this, where
- 1:45they're just a little bit aloof.
- 1:47It's not that they're unfriendly.
- 1:49It's not that they're doing anything disrespectful or
- 1:52rude.
- 1:52It's just maybe hard to get to know
- 1:55them, maybe hard to get to that place
- 1:58of openness with them.
- 2:01So there's a few different approaches you could
- 2:04take here.
- 2:05One is to say, oh, well, that's them.
- 2:07They're they're not open.
- 2:08So I'll just worry about building friendships with
- 2:10people who are open.
- 2:11And that can be a good approach, right?
- 2:12If if you have other people around you
- 2:16who seem to be more engaged, more open,
- 2:18more building a friendship with you, of course,
- 2:20you want to respect everybody's boundaries.
- 2:22You don't want to force anything on somebody
- 2:24who's who's not looking for that.
- 2:26But the second approach that I have found
- 2:29fascinating and rewarding is to not assume that
- 2:34somebody else is not open just because they're
- 2:37not immediately open.
- 2:41So I in the past have had a
- 2:42co-worker who might be described as prickly
- 2:45around the edges, right, somebody with a reputation,
- 2:49you know, somebody who who really does maybe
- 2:51edge into that, not just not being open,
- 2:53but being a little bit of prickly sometimes.
- 2:56But I thought, you know what?
- 2:58You know what?
- 2:59I'm not going to let this co-workers
- 3:01prickliness determine how I treat them.
- 3:03And I found if we were one on
- 3:06one, we weren't in a crowd and I
- 3:08just asked a curious question about their lives.
- 3:11That person loved talking with me.
- 3:13That person was like, let me tell you,
- 3:15I've been at this company for so many
- 3:16years and here's what I've done.
- 3:17Here's how things have changed.
- 3:18And the reason I had a hunch that
- 3:21this person might be willing to do that
- 3:23is I had a friend of mine, also
- 3:24a follower of Jesus, a disciple of Jesus,
- 3:26who I saw getting lunch with this supposedly
- 3:29prickly person multiple times.
- 3:31And I was like, see, see, even though
- 3:33they're prickly, they really do open up.
- 3:37They just need the right kind of listening
- 3:39to open up.
- 3:41OK, so as we're going through these five
- 3:44thresholds of faith, we've talked about trusting a
- 3:46Christian friend, talked about becoming curious, which can
- 3:49be just intellectual curiosity.
- 3:51And now we're talking about becoming open, open
- 3:53to personal change.
- 3:55There's actually two kinds of openness that we're
- 3:57kind of talking about together.
- 3:58One is the level of openness somebody has
- 4:00relationally to you.
- 4:02The other is the level of openness that
- 4:04they have towards Jesus, toward seeing if these
- 4:09things that they're maybe talking about at the
- 4:11curious stage with their Christian friend could really
- 4:13change their life.
- 4:14It could make a change in who they
- 4:16are.
- 4:16And these two kinds of openness, I have
- 4:19posited, can go together that when somebody is
- 4:21willing to be open with you, that may
- 4:23create a safe space where they're willing to
- 4:25also explore the question, could they be open
- 4:27to Jesus?
- 4:28But they are two different things, right?
- 4:30It's it's not like somebody who's willing to
- 4:32be vulnerable with you is automatically pursuing greater
- 4:34openness towards Jesus and vice versa.
- 4:37Maybe somebody who's never been friends with you
- 4:39is actually getting quite close to Jesus.
- 4:40It's just you have nothing to do with
- 4:42it.
- 4:43So as we think about these two kinds
- 4:45of openness, we want to be asking how
- 4:49can we foster the openness with us in
- 4:52a healthy and appropriately persistent way, and then
- 4:56how can we challenge people to turn that
- 4:59openness toward Jesus?
- 5:02So just a few points of guidance around
- 5:05this.
- 5:06Some of this has to do with what
- 5:07theologians call the ordo salutis, the order of
- 5:10salvation.
- 5:10So this is technical language for what happens
- 5:13in somebody's heart over time as they're coming
- 5:16closer and closer to faith in Jesus and
- 5:19then actually putting their faith in Jesus.
- 5:21And in our last episode, I talked about
- 5:23how the openness stage is not yet like
- 5:26saving faith, it's not yet confessing Jesus as
- 5:28Lord, but it's like the beginning of it.
- 5:30It's like they're opening that door and they're
- 5:33about to step through.
- 5:34I think that this is a helpful metaphor,
- 5:36not least because it shows up in the
- 5:38Bible in Revelation chapter three, verse 20, the
- 5:43risen Lord Christ is speaking prophetically to the
- 5:47churches.
- 5:47And he's having John, who's listening, write things
- 5:50down to tell to the churches.
- 5:51And this comes from his words, the church
- 5:54in Laodicea.
- 5:55He says, here I am.
- 5:58I stand at the door and knock.
- 6:01If anyone hears my voice and opens the
- 6:04door, I will come in and eat with
- 6:06that person and they with me.
- 6:12I love that he mentions a meal.
- 6:14I will come in and eat with that
- 6:16person and they with me.
- 6:20Now, that's the language of the door being
- 6:23open, leading to true faith, leading to communion.
- 6:26But in order to get there, you got
- 6:28to open the door.
- 6:29And that's what this openness stage is all
- 6:31about.
- 6:31Can you begin to open that door?
- 6:34So how do we help people take a
- 6:36step from being open to us to being
- 6:39open to Jesus?
- 6:41Well, I want to say just a couple
- 6:42of things.
- 6:43One is that we can actually explicitly appeal
- 6:47to that idea.
- 6:49So if you've been building a friendship with
- 6:51somebody and you realize they're being open with
- 6:53you, maybe they're sharing painful experiences, like we
- 6:56talked about last time, they may even share
- 6:57some traumatic things they've been through and they
- 6:59trust you with that and you're being a
- 7:00good listener and honoring that trust.
- 7:03By the way, you keep their confidences and
- 7:05you respond with emotional intelligence and empathy to
- 7:08the things they share with you.
- 7:11As that's happening and as appropriately a conversation
- 7:15may take a turn toward questions of faith,
- 7:17you could say something along the lines of,
- 7:19hey, you know, in our friendship, you've been
- 7:21really open to me.
- 7:23And I really treasure that because obviously you
- 7:26think I'm trustworthy enough to be open with
- 7:28me like that.
- 7:30And I'm just wondering, do you think it
- 7:34could be possible to be open to Jesus
- 7:35like that?
- 7:38Now that's the kind of question to ask
- 7:39probably when you've already had several spiritual conversations
- 7:42when somebody's shown that they're beginning to question
- 7:44whether Jesus is real, right?
- 7:46But just making that direct appeal, like, hey,
- 7:48you're open with me, we have a friendship,
- 7:50what would it be like for you to
- 7:51be open with Jesus and have a friendship
- 7:53with him?
- 7:54And you could even bring up that verse,
- 7:56you don't have to quote it word for
- 7:57word, but paraphrase it.
- 7:57Like, you know, there's this verse that says
- 7:58Jesus is knocking at the door.
- 8:01And if you open it, he'll come in
- 8:03and have a meal with you.
- 8:06A lot of people don't know that.
- 8:08There's this wonderful story about Dallas Willard, you
- 8:11got to forgive me.
- 8:11I have so many Dallas Willard things I
- 8:13know, but they're just so good.
- 8:14They're just so good.
- 8:15I mean, why not use some of the
- 8:16best Dallas, praise the Lord for Dallas.
- 8:19Okay, so Dallas Willard was a philosophy professor
- 8:21at the University of Southern California.
- 8:24And he had a student once, and this
- 8:27student went to, I believe at the time
- 8:30he was a teacher's assistant for Dallas, who
- 8:32was a Christian.
- 8:33So the student knew that this teacher's assistant
- 8:35was a Christian, obviously Dallas was a Christian
- 8:37too.
- 8:37But he goes and he asked this Christian
- 8:38TA, he says, is it true that Jesus
- 8:40can come right up to you?
- 8:43And the TA kind of scratches his head
- 8:44and he's like, that's an interesting way of
- 8:45phrasing things.
- 8:46And so he's like, tell me more.
- 8:47And he's like, well, I was talking with
- 8:48Dallas and Dallas, like during his office hours
- 8:51in his office.
- 8:52And Dallas said that when you talk with
- 8:54Jesus, Jesus can come right up to you
- 8:57and listen to you.
- 8:59Isn't that a beautiful image that this undergrad
- 9:01student, no one has ever told them that
- 9:04no one has ever told them that Jesus
- 9:05wants to come right up to you, be
- 9:08present to you, interact with you.
- 9:09So you can do that with your friends,
- 9:11right?
- 9:12Just like Dallas obviously had created an environment
- 9:13of trust in his office and his classroom
- 9:16so that the student even at a secular
- 9:17campus felt comfortable having a conversation about faith
- 9:20with him.
- 9:21As we build these safe spaces, we can
- 9:23say Jesus can come right up to you.
- 9:25You're coming up to me.
- 9:26You're getting meals with me.
- 9:27You're building a friendship with me.
- 9:29Would you be open to considering doing that
- 9:32with Jesus?
- 9:33You know, we can just ask those questions
- 9:35and then see how people respond.
- 9:36Again, they might say no.
- 9:38They might be like, ah, well, I like
- 9:39you.
- 9:40I don't know if I like Jesus though.
- 9:41You know, whatever it is, they might indicate
- 9:43they're not ready for that.
- 9:44And again, so then you just honor where
- 9:45they're at.
- 9:46No need to push, right?
- 9:47But you can come back to that as
- 9:49appropriate and kind of, you know, you can
- 9:51be knocking on the door too and saying
- 9:53like, hey, have you thought about opening this
- 9:55door?
- 9:56But they may respond with genuine openness to
- 10:00Jesus.
- 10:00They may respond with a sense of like,
- 10:01yeah, I think I'm interested in that.
- 10:04So what's what's going on then?
- 10:06What's going on then?
- 10:08Well, I want to read a passage from
- 10:10the Valley of Vision, this collection of prayers
- 10:12kind of rooted in the Puritan tradition, but
- 10:15then written in the 20th century by an
- 10:17Anglican clergyman.
- 10:19It's really funny how he kind of got
- 10:20away with presenting himself as the editor, but
- 10:22I'm pretty sure he actually wrote most of
- 10:24these prayers himself.
- 10:26His name was Arthur Bennett.
- 10:29And he has this one called the convicting
- 10:30spirit.
- 10:32OK, so so again, kind of going back
- 10:33to that idea of like the ordo salutus,
- 10:35the theological order of salvation, what happens in
- 10:37somebody's soul on the way to faith, part
- 10:40of what happens is conviction of sin.
- 10:42Part of what happens is the action of
- 10:44the Holy Spirit in someone's heart for them
- 10:45to realize that they need help, that they
- 10:49have sinned, that they are responsible for how
- 10:52they have sinned, that they need forgiveness, that
- 10:54they need God's grace to come inside of
- 10:56them and work a change in them.
- 10:59So this prayer is presented as a prayer
- 11:02of somebody who's kind of at that stage
- 11:03of realizing that they are a sinner, that
- 11:06they need God's help.
- 11:07So it's called the convicting spirit.
- 11:09Let me just read a couple of phrases
- 11:11from it.
- 11:12Melt my heart by the majesty and mercy
- 11:16of God.
- 11:17Show me my ruined self and the help
- 11:21there is in him.
- 11:23Teach me to behold my creator, his ability
- 11:26to save, his arms outstretched, his heart big
- 11:30for me.
- 11:32May I confide in his power and love,
- 11:36commit my soul to him without reserve.
- 11:41Okay.
- 11:41Now, obviously, if somebody were actually praying this
- 11:44prayer, like consciously addressing the words of this
- 11:46kind of prayer to Jesus, they're probably a
- 11:48couple of steps further along.
- 11:49They're probably at the point of faith, but
- 11:52we can pray this kind of prayer for
- 11:54somebody else, right?
- 11:56We can pray, melt their heart by the
- 12:00majesty and mercy of God.
- 12:02Show them their ruined self and the help
- 12:05there is in him.
- 12:07Teach them to behold their creator.
- 12:09His ability to save, his arms outstretched, his
- 12:13heart big for them.
- 12:16May they confide in his power and love,
- 12:18commit their soul to him without reserve.
- 12:23This is what we're praying will happen in
- 12:26our friends' lives when they're at the openness
- 12:27stage, that they would see that they need
- 12:31help and see that help is available through
- 12:34Jesus Christ.
- 12:35And there's a phrase there that's really key,
- 12:37which is the phrase, show me my ruined
- 12:39self, show me my ruined self.
- 12:42That is not a politically correct, go us
- 12:46self empowered phrase, right?
- 12:49This is part of the Christian theology of
- 12:51sin, of personal responsibility for sin, that there's
- 12:54actually something deeply amiss in our souls.
- 12:58And the way to find healing for that
- 13:01cannot be found inside of our souls.
- 13:04We need outside help.
- 13:06We need God's grace to meet us.
- 13:10And so it's an unapologetic phrase, my ruined
- 13:14self.
- 13:15And that's a very hard thing to grapple
- 13:17with.
- 13:18It's very hard to grapple with the idea
- 13:20that your soul is in some way ruined
- 13:24and in need of restoration.
- 13:26That is part of why people back away
- 13:28from openness, is to truly press into openness
- 13:31to Jesus, requires being open to the news
- 13:35that you are a sinner and you need
- 13:36forgiveness, among other things.
- 13:39And that is really good news because it
- 13:40provides something that explains all these experiences you've
- 13:43had in your life when your soul has,
- 13:45in fact, gotten the better of you and
- 13:46you've done things that are destructive and that
- 13:48you don't want to do and it's caused
- 13:50problems and you're not sure how to make
- 13:51sense of things.
- 13:52Like the theology of sin is actually incredibly
- 13:55liberating because it does show people like, yeah,
- 13:58you've had this darkness in your life all
- 14:00along, but you can be freed from it.
- 14:03You can find forgiveness and grace for a
- 14:05new way of life as you put your
- 14:08faith in Jesus.
- 14:09But that is a bitter pill to swallow.
- 14:12And so one of the things that we
- 14:14can be attentive to is how are people
- 14:17beginning to recognize their ruined self?
- 14:22That's a key thing.
- 14:23That's a sign of openness.
- 14:25So if somebody is talking with you, if
- 14:26they're in friendships with you and they start
- 14:27saying things like, I just wish X could
- 14:30change, right?
- 14:31Like, I wish I could be more patient
- 14:32with my kids.
- 14:34They may not have the language of sin,
- 14:36right?
- 14:36But they're noticing their ruined self.
- 14:39They're noticing there's something about me that would
- 14:41be good to change.
- 14:42And the one virtue in our culture is
- 14:43like be yourself, right?
- 14:45And there is a reality that we need
- 14:47to be ourselves, but we don't want to
- 14:49be the version of ourselves that's wicked and
- 14:51cruel and selfish and impatient and lustful and
- 14:56all those other things, right?
- 14:57We can become our truest selves by learning
- 15:00to repent of our sin, by learning to
- 15:02name what is wrong and hand it over
- 15:05to the Lord.
- 15:06So keep your ears open when you're in
- 15:09these conversations for somebody talking about their ruined
- 15:11self, even if they don't have that language.
- 15:13So it could be saying that it's something
- 15:14they want to change.
- 15:16It could also be sharing about aspects of
- 15:18themselves where they feel like they need help
- 15:19or healing.
- 15:21It's like mental health conversations of someone's like,
- 15:22I just experienced so much anxiety or I'm
- 15:24really having a hard time with depression.
- 15:27Very important clarification.
- 15:28It is not a sin to be anxious.
- 15:30It is not a sin to be depressed,
- 15:32right?
- 15:33Mental health conditions and difficulties are complex in
- 15:37their roots and causes.
- 15:40But there's still things that we can face
- 15:43into as a darkness in our lives that
- 15:45God can minister to us.
- 15:47And to receive that ministry from God requires
- 15:49a vulnerability and an openness to him, even
- 15:52if it's not exactly repenting of a specific
- 15:54sin.
- 15:54It's bearing a wound for his healing to
- 15:57enter in.
- 16:00And so if somebody's sharing stories like that
- 16:02with you, again, one of the best ways
- 16:03to meet somebody there is to, as appropriate
- 16:05as they have shown themselves trustworthy, share your
- 16:08own experience with those things.
- 16:09And as much as you have experience with
- 16:11anxiety, depression, with other mental health needs to
- 16:14come to them as, you know, one human
- 16:16being broken and a need to another human
- 16:19being broken and a need, honestly, and you
- 16:21can share how you found grace and healing
- 16:23for those things in all the ways that
- 16:25you have as part of your friendship with
- 16:27Jesus.
- 16:30But if somebody's sharing those things with you,
- 16:32those are things that you can then note
- 16:34like internally, silently, while you're continuing to listen
- 16:36to them, like, ah, that's an openness thing.
- 16:38That's a ruined self thing.
- 16:40That's a need for outside help thing.
- 16:43And if you're getting more and more of
- 16:44those or more and more frequently or more
- 16:46and more vulnerability in your conversations with a
- 16:48friend, that's a sign they're in the openness
- 16:50stage.
- 16:51And the next stage after that is even
- 16:53more exciting.
- 16:54It's the seeking stage, which we'll talk about
- 16:56in our next couple of episodes.
- 17:01Lord Jesus, we want to be open to
- 17:03you.
- 17:04Show us how.
- 17:06Show us how to let you keep saving
- 17:07us.
- 17:09Show us how to listen well to our
- 17:11friends as they share their stories, their experiences,
- 17:15their sense of self.
- 17:17Help us to be good friends and good
- 17:18counselors and just be open and honest about
- 17:22pointing the way towards you, saying that you
- 17:25are there knocking at the door, waiting to
- 17:28come in and eat with them.
- 17:31Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 17:33do our work with you.
- 17:39Thanks for listening.
