- Lucas: And welcome back to Learn Cantonese with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. And oh my gosh, can you believe it? This is our 200th episode. Lucas: 200 episodes. That is wild. And we've come such a long way together. Luna: From saying hello to flying kites, we've done a lot. And today feels special. Lucas: It does. So for episode 200, let's do something cozy and delicious. Let's go to a bakery. Luna: Oh, I love bakeries. The smell of fresh bread. Okay, so what's the first phrase we need? Lucas: The first thing you want to say when you walk in is 'I want to buy bread.' In Cantonese, that's 我想買麵包. Luna: 我想買麵包. I want to buy bread. 我想買麵包. Lucas: Perfect. Let's break it down. 我想 means I want. 買 means buy. And 麵包 is bread. So 我想買麵包. Luna: 我想買麵包. Simple. And if I want to be super polite, I add a 唔該 at the end? Like 唔該, 我想買麵包. Lucas: Exactly. 唔該 is like 'please' or 'thank you' in service situations. So you can say 唔該, 我想買麵包. Luna: 唔該, 我想買麵包. I love it. So now I'm at the counter. I want to ask the price. Lucas: Great question. To ask 'How much is this?', you say 一個麵包幾多錢. That literally means 'one bread how much money'. Luna: 一個麵包幾多錢. So if I'm pointing at a specific bread, I just say that. 一個麵包幾多錢. Lucas: Yes. 一個 is the measure word for bread, and 幾多錢 means how much money. So 一個麵包幾多錢. Luna: 一個麵包幾多錢. Perfect. And then the shopkeeper might tell me a price, and I want to say 'I want one loaf.' Lucas: That's 我想要一個麵包. I want one loaf of bread. 我想要一個麵包. Luna: 我想要一個麵包. So 我想要 is 'I want', and 一個麵包 is 'one bread'. 我想要一個麵包. Lucas: You got it. Let's do a quick scenario. You're at the bakery. You say 唔該, 我想買麵包. Luna: 唔該, 我想買麵包. Lucas: The shopkeeper asks 一個麵包幾多錢? Well, no, they ask how many you want. But you'd say 我想要一個麵包. Luna: 我想要一個麵包. Then they tell me the price. And I say 多謝 which is thank you. Lucas: Right. 多謝 is for gifts and kindness, but in a shop exchange, you usually say 唔該. Like 唔該, 唔該. Luna: Ah, so after they give me the bread, I say 唔該. And when I leave, I also say 唔該. That's handy. Lucas: Exactly. So let's practice the whole flow. Walk in, 唔該, 我想買麵包. Luna: 唔該, 我想買麵包. Lucas: They show you the breads. You ask 一個麵包幾多錢. Luna: 一個麵包幾多錢. Lucas: They answer. You say 我想要一個麵包. Luna: 我想要一個麵包. Lucas: They hand it over. You say 唔該. Luna: 唔該. And that's it. I feel like I could actually do that in Hong Kong. Lucas: You totally could. And you know, it's moments like that where you learn a language for real. You use it. Luna: Yeah. And Fexingo has been helping us get to those moments for 200 episodes. That's pretty amazing. Luna: 一個麵包幾多錢. Lucas: 我想要一個麵包. Luna: 我想要一個麵包. Lucas: 唔該. And there you have it. Three simple phrases to use at any bakery in Hong Kong. And a big thank you for being with us for 200 episodes.
